You can probably overdue the greasing if you installed zerk fittings and
use a gun that wont happen with grease cups i find them ( my boat has 2)
quite hard to turn. Cups can be refilled and i believe a zerk fitting would

I installed grease zerks with the rudder in the boat and the boat in the water.
I drilled two holes in the rudder tube, one above and one below the autopilot
arm and used a tap for the right threads to install the zincs. Don't over
tighten them. I the used Green Grease as discussed
Mine didn't have grease cups. I installed zirc fittings. Much easier to
do when the rudder is out. I wish I had installed grease hoses and
remotely mounted the zircs in a more accessible location.

I've had my rudder off 3 times now (don't ask!). The first time I was

damage. I put some wood blocks under the rudder so when I took the top collar

I replaced my rudder (including the shaft) about 15 years ago and, later, found
out that the shaft wasn’t bent as I had though—the upper bearing had just
shifted. Make sure your shaft is really bent before proceeding. To do this, I
would try to realign the bearing just below the deck first.

In case this has not been mentioned already Southshore Yachts (
http://southshoreyachts.com/) out of Virgil, Ontario may have a brand new
original rudder for your boat or have the original design.. It's pricey
but it's the real thing and the job just becomes a part swap..
Good luck with it.

Rick,
Thanks for the info. That makes perfect sense. The surveyor said the lower
gudgeon was leaking. When I get it down I'll open it up and put a heat lamp
on it. Things like

Thanks for the reply. I did a little research and it looks like the rudder is
hollow with the exception of a wood block at the top of the rudder. I called
West System Epoxy this morning. I'll need to use a Dremel tool and grind out
a channel where the crack is and fill with epoxy.
Thanks a

Hello everyone,
I have a crack on the aft portion of the rudder where the two halves are
joined. From what I can see, It is above the waterline. Recently I had a

crack. Also, there are three
I think you'll be fine with moving the boat.
The trouble with rudders is that you need to thoroughly dry them out and
that is the biggest challenge. With the season approaching quick I would
wait till the end of the season. Depending on how you choose to dry it, it
may take quite a bit of time.

The image link below is of my rudder bearing. It looks to me like it has
dropped down. Being new to me I dont know what it is supposed to look like.
Is the lower ring supposed to be exposed? Or should it be up in the tube?

Lower ring is just an acetyl bushing/spacer. After cleaning and roughing
up the chipped out area I would use your favorite faring putty/thickened
epoxy to fill.
Welcome to the list.
We all kinda like to know where you're from so we have sign offs similar to
