I've used this setup for a lot of years, and it's been very reliable.
Did lose a NIC about two years ago, on two machines at the same time so
I presume it was due to a lightning strike / surge.

ar, I have only used things like
smbclient and smbmount, I have not set up a Samba server. I watched
someone do it graphically on a RedHat 7.2 install and it seemed simple
enough -- never tried it myself and didn't catch all the details of what
he did.
