It seems the router has to receive a DHCP request from the 3400 in
order to recognise its presence. Oddly, I can get windows machines to
do manual IP no problem.
router is a Dlink DI106. But what else do I expect if I buy all my
equipment for next to nothing on ebay? :-)

There is one issue to be aware of - the PB will save an enormous
amount of electricity.
For example, a PB on 24 hrs uses about as much power as a desktop in
45 minutes.
Both in cost and pollution terms its a huge difference.
I really don't think there are any hardware issues **as long as you
on it. It should be an option in the monitors
control panel, or mine can be set from the control strip.

the ram was transferrable,
especially as the mb speed is v similar?
It's only a viable plan if I can keep the ram - the new MB has almost
nothing, while my 3400 has the max 144Mb.
