[talk-ph] Post Open data Day Thank You Note
Dear everyone, Just a note of thanks to everyone who participated in our Open data Day 2013 event last Saturday. I am personally impressed by the many initiatives of several government agencies in making their data accessible to the public. Notes and other materials are available in the Google Drive directory [0]. We will add more in the coming days. If you want to share feedback or anything, just edit the Project Ideas document. Photos and other comments are available in the FB event page [1] and G+ event page [2]. The execution is far from perfect, so we really appreciate feedback. Special thanks to the following Institutions: - Environmental Science for Social Change - for the venue - Georepublic (http://georepublic.de/en/) - for our food - GIZ, PPDO Leyte and the Municipal LGU representatives - for the hangout stream in Leyte and Northern Samar - DSWD - DOH - Project NOAH - UPD - Geodetic Engineering Department - students and faculty - ASoG's Inclusive Mobility - OpenStreetMap Philippines and all the local mappers Lots of new ideas and possibilities emerged related to Open Data. The participant's list is also available in the GDrive directory so if you want to follow-up specific people(I'm sure I will, so expect my email :-) ), I'm sure they are more than willing to discuss. The Open Data Day 2013 celebration maybe over but we hope the ideas, relations and possible collaborations flourish. Thanks again! [OSM-talk-be] OSM promo

I don't think separating rock music venues and concert halls is a good idea. They are basically the same thing, a big room where music is played. Well, when you think of it there is a difference, concert halls usually have chairs. Is that a good separator of the two? Maybe we could invent a tag like music=rock;classical;popular that differentiates those halls, and tag them all with amenity=music_venue. Excessive distinctions causes a lot of pointless hair splitting arguments (should I tag this as a concert hall or a music venue?) OTOH, if amenity=concert_hall, amenity=music_venue and leisure=music_venue are all in pretty similar usage, we're pretty much free to pick one to support. I'd take amenity=music_venue, as the term is the broadest (and happily encompasses concert halls - the reverse isn't true). leisure=* seems wrong - those tags are generally about sports and recreation outdoors. Well, when you think of it there is a difference, concert halls usually have chairs. Is that a good separator of the two? Not at all - lots of other venues do too. You could argue that concert halls are designed for the performance of classical music, but even that will break down. It's not a distinction that needs to be made. Can you imagine a map that has different icons for concert halls vs music venues? Maybe we could invent a tag like music=rock;classical;popular that differentiates those halls, and tag them all with amenity=music_venue. Sounds ok...I think in practice there will be an awful lot of fuzzy sets. Rock music at classical venues and vice versa. I don't agree at all with this. They are very different features with the only thing in common that there is someone playing music and there is a space for an audience to listen to. We already have other features in OSM which also describe features that are included in this definition (e.g. bandstand). Of course there are different possibilities to structure the world into classes, but for me a concert hall merits a different base tag than a music venue for rock concerts. And of course there might also be places where they perform both kinds of concerts (but I guess that's the exception and not the standard). cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

In Switzerland we tried for a substantial amount of time to avoid using the name tag on the Swiss country node (since any single value would be wrong). Unluckily we could not stop our colleagues from a larger country in the north wanting to fiddle around with it and last year we decided to give in and set it to a multi-lingual value. Besides that we do have have true bilingual municipalities for example Bienne were we have resorted to the same solution (name = Biel/Bienne). Of course one could make the argument that we should only have amenity=sustenance and amenity=music_venue, but then then we would lose information just for the sake of abstraction. Both are bad examples imho, as both don't exclude each other. A lot of locations are both: restaurant and cafe, selling warm meals for lunch and dinner and coffee and cakes in the afternoon; and some music locations are used for classical concerts as well as for rock, pop, theater, musical, comedy and whatever more regularly. Some stadiums nowadays are built with multiple usages in mind, e.g. the arena Auf Schalke of the German soccer club Schalke 04. Mainly a soccer stadium there have been events like Sensation White (Electro and House music), concerts (Herbert Grönemeyer, Metallica, Slayer, Pur, Bruce Springsteen, U2, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams), operas (Aida, Carmen, Turandot) (source partly [1]). Another example sport stadium with multiple usages is the Lanxess Arena (formerly known as Kölnarena) in Cologne. On the other hand the Seidensticker-Halle in Bielefeld is usually a sports facility for schools in Bielefeld, but used for all kind of events, too. I'm working on a Jerusalem-themed app for mobile devices, and my developer is using the route-me API as our maps solution. The tricky part is that OpenStreetMaps defaults to Hebrew when viewing Jerusalem. I see here that OpenStreetMaps does have English-language data (street labels, etc) available for Jerusalem: http://toolserver.org/~osm/locale/en.html?zoom=15lat=31.77079lon=35.21805layers=BT I am looking for help exporting this data to an MBTile file for use with the route-me API. I have been asking around for advice, and while the OSM community has been highly generous with explaining how to go about doing the work, because I'm not familiar with these file types, I'm not so comfortable doing it myself. I am hoping that someone on the talk list might be willing to take care of the job on my behalf for a modest fee, or even on a volunteer basis. (Unfortunately, we've already spent our budget on developing the app, so this expense will need to come out of my own shallow pocket.) Please email me directly at bjacob...@gmail.com if you have any advice or might be willing to help. Thanks in advance! [OSM-talk] Geocode trademark
If anyone gets around to challenging GEOCODE, Inc's trademark claim, a couple of quick searches will find that the term has been in use in GIS literature for ~45 years. For example, I organized a working session on Geocoding in 1971. I put together a collection of papers called GEOCODING-71 which Google books shows available in nine libraries in the USA and Canada. At the bottom of page 54, there's even a reference to a commercial product called GEOCODE. Re: [OSM-talk] Cool uses of OSM
Hello Everyone, Hi Maarten, Guilty as charged - we are responsible for the Passenger Information Application for the Erzgebirgsbahn - onboard, for mobile phones and on the VMS webpage. The data shown is based on GPS-position fixes of all the Erzgebirgsbahn-vehicles and calculations of estimated arrival times on the stations along the trip. The source information is provided by a already existent onboard system whose primary purpose until now was to assist the drivers for an economic manner of driving - based on the current position on the trip and the remaining scheduled stations. Our servers preprocess this information collected from all the vehicles and provide it with some extrapolations to be displayed by the onboard display units, the internet-application and the mobile phone apps. The whole system is in an evaluation phase right now and only one of the vehicles of the Erzgebirgsbahn is equipped with display-units, yet, but all vehicles already relay their positions and estimations for the remaining trip in certain intervals. We provide precompiled OSM tiles spanning the area of operations of the Erzgebirgsbahn and quite some more in the vicinity. If the system is left alone it will cycle to different zoom levels depending on the speed of the train and keeping the vehicle in the center. Beneath the scheduled trip to the side the unit will display the departure tables of the upcoming station informing the passenger about connections - until now mostly other trains but perhaps the VMS can be convinced to deliver data on bus services in the future, too. If a passenger touches the unit as you surely noticed the map may be panned and zoomed at will giving quite some details about the territory and giving him assistance in exploring the vicinity. Once it is left alone for a certain time it will reset back to the automatic mode. Since the displays onboard the trains have to adhere to a huge number of regulations concerning the usage of equipment in railway vehicles and security against vandalism the somehow outdated usage of a resistive touch screen could not be avoided and the usage is sometimes not quite as intuitively as we would like. While taking some test-trips in the summer I witnessed several passengers trying to use tentative touches and finger gestures which they probably know from their smart-phones and tablets and few dared to exert the necessary pressure for the screen to react to their fingertips. And in fact you could have seen the departure tables onboard the train, too. I admit it is a little difficult to click the stations in the map - especially in low zoom levels - due to the restricted resolution of the touch-screen technology and the display itself. Fortunately there is another way which you probably missed - the departure tables can be reached by clicking the entries in the remaining timetable of the train shown at the side, too. In which case they will show a departure table starting with the estimated time of arrival of the train you are on. I am glad you like the application and had fun on your trip with the Erzgebirgsbahn. I've been thinking about this problem a lot, and I think those tags shouldn't be taken to seriously. They are all pretty vague and have lot's of gray areas. So I'm sure a place exists that could be tagged as a caffe, fast_food, restaurant, pub and a night_club. I think we shouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Just use the one that surrounding people use most. But if we want to be precise, we can invent a big collection of attributes which should be strictly used. Tags like service:bicycle:rent=yes, dance_podium=yes, service:food:pizza=yes, service:drink:coffee=yes etc. That's information you should be able to rely on. If you have a amenity=caffe + service:food:pizza=yes, it can still be called a caffe. Janko ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] How to obtain a small coastline polygon for TileMill?
Hi all, I'm learning TileMill with a project to render my home town of Melbourne, which is on the southeastern coast of Australia. The only problem I'm having is the coastline. I've tried a few things, and nothing has really worked: 1) The default 'countries' shape that comes with TileMill - not enough detail, misaligned with OSM data (maybe the wrong projection) 2) Cloudmade's Victoria coastline (http://downloads.cloudmade.com/oceania/australia_and_new_zealand/australia/victoria) - I think it's just a way, not a closed polygon. As a result, applying a fill to it doesn't really work - bits of water don't get filled, and bits of land do. 3) Cloudmade's victoria.poly (http://downloads.cloudmade.com/oceania/australia_and_new_zealand/australia/victoria/victoria.poly) - not in a format that TileMill recognises. 4) Cloudmade's whole Australia coastline: http://downloads.cloudmade.com/oceania/australia_and_new_zealand/australia/australia.coastline.osm.bz2 - aligns perfectly, but seems to be broken: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/767553/broken-coastline.png 5) openstreetmapdata.com's land/sea polygons (http://openstreetmapdata.com/data/land-polygons) - very slow to render (because it's the whole world?) - it's off by ~25km south of the other OSM data. I used the Mercator projection I'm using TileMill installed on an Ubuntu VM with PostGIS. The OSM data I'm using came from here: http://osm-metro-extracts.s3.amazonaws.com/melbourne.osm.pbf Can someone advise the best way to get a simple coastline polygon into TileMill? For this project, I really only need a single polygon of Port Phillip Bay (or alternatively, a single land polygon covering greater Melbourne). Sorry for the newbie questions. Because you are only interested in a small area, you should probably cut out that area before use anyway (with ogr2ogr for instance). And create a shape index file! This will make rendering much faster. - it's off by ~25km south of the other OSM data. I used the Mercator projection I am quite sure that it is not off, maybe you other data is off? TileMill's projection auto detection is a bit off for these files - make sure to set the SRS explicitly to '900913'. As for speed, make sure the file has been indexed with the 'shapeindex' command line utility that comes with Mapnik. Re: [Talk-it] Master City: Giochiamo con OpenStreetMap
Esco dal coro e ti faccio alcune critiche. Giocando a mondo faccio praticamente sempre zero. Re: [Talk-dk] FOT data i OSM ?
Re: [Talk-dk] FOT data i OSM ?
[Talk-gb-westmidlands] OpenStreetMap in Coventry City Council
Hi All, Good news! Here in Coventry we are making in-roads to get Coventry City Council to think more about OpenStreetMap. PeterP has done some fantastic work adding details about public rights of way to OpenStreetMap and, on Friday, was able to present a map he created using the Maperitive tool to Coventry's Public Rights of Way officer. At the same time I have been following up with people I was able to meet during last years CityCamp Coventry event. So far this reaches to getting CCC to use our map tiles (see below), small steps but at least it gets OpenStreetMap into the vocabulary of council employees. Regards, Rob == Forwarded email === Thanks, Rob for the information and the links. I had an initial attempt at replacing two of our maps from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap (using tiles from OpenStreetMap but still using the Google Maps v3 API). This appears to work successfully - take a look at http://www.coventry.gov.uk/info/29/performance/1732/infographics_and_visualisations/2and http://ias.facts-about-coventry.com/IAS/dataviews/health/life-expectancy-malefor example. ___ Talk-gb-westmidlands mailing list Talk-gb-westmidlands@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb-westmidlands

Haremos algunas pruebas a ver qué sale. There's no legal reason why you can't remove the attribution=* tags (or any tag, for that matter). My practice is to remove them when the source=* tag indicates that the source is geobase and I'm editing the way anyways. There may be other import cruft that you want to strip out at the same time. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
Re: [Talk-ca] Community boundaries
Stephen, The Nominatim tool will classify properly the roads in a city when there is an administrative boundary relation defining the limits of the city. It seems that no one have been imported one for your city yet. Be Carefull! Do not try to do it by yourself. It is not an easy task and may cause serious problems if not done properly. When there is no limits, Nominatim uses the node describing the closest town near your road, more or less. Depending on your province, there may be data available. So specify your location and ask on the list what can be done. Re: [Talk-ca] GeoBase tags
Maybe it would make sense to come up with a consensus of which tags can be stripped. I know that for the US TIGER data JOSM automatically removes the cruft when you edit a way, and we should have this for Geobase/Canvec, too. Harald.
