Fresh 12" of Detroit inspired hip-hop beats

2015-03-17 Thread Jernej Marusic
I have a new 12" out, under a new alias Pavemental, full of synth heavy
instrumental hiphop, with a lot of Detroit techno influence. The opening
track is a collaboration with a multitalented singer Monika Horvat.

Should be available in all better record stores, or directly from my
Bandcamp:

(313) Chilli Space 10 compilation 2x12"

2014-02-28 Thread Jernej Marusic
A bit of shameless promotion. Though it's not directly Detroit related, there's
a strong Detroit influence present in a lot of the music.
I'm present on this compilation under my own as Octex and as part of Ago Tela.

Chilli Space 10 is a compilation of the freshest sub-alpine electronic music
from Slovenia. After 12 years and 9 CD-only releases, the tenth installment has
finally found its way onto vinyl! The double LP album contains stylistically
diverse music from Slovenia's electronic music underground. The compilation
features exclusive tracks by artists such as Ago Tela, Octex, iTurk,
Electrosaurus and others. A must for lovers of deep dubbed-out electronic
music!
Released today, 28th of February, distributed by Triple Vision

(313) my new album

2010-05-06 Thread Jernej Marusic
A bit of self promotion for my new album, not really detroit techno, but
it's a big influence on me :)

Long awaited new album from Jernej Marusic aka Octex sees him exploring
his collection of field recordings and immersing them in his
soundscapes. While the recordings themselves sometimes get processed and
effected to the edge of recognition, their storytelling and emotional
content are used as a basis for all overlaying compositions. The result
is an even deeper development of his previous dub experiments, avoiding
precise classification, laying somewhere in between dub-techno,
dub-step, ambient, IDM, dub...

(313) some improvised techno

2010-03-19 Thread Jernej Marusic
Last year me and two friends of mine started a "band" Ago Tela for
improvised electronic music. The concept is to have no pre prepared
sequences or anything, just total free improvisation that can take us
anywhere from abstract ambient soundscapes to dancy 4/4 techno. Also not
limited to electronic instuments...
We were lucky that our first official gig was opening for Moritz von
Oswald trio, when they played here in Ljubljana last autumn.

Here's a recording of a recent studio session, that came out more on the
techno side, appropriate for this list :)

Re: (313) New Moritz LP - brief report

2009-07-06 Thread Jernej Marusic
I've been listening to this quit a lot in last week and find it to be
one of the best records to come out recently. Though it's different from
the stuff that Moritz did with Ernestus (and the sound isn't as nice and
warm as Rhythm & Sound tracks), it almost sounds closer to Vladislav
Delay's work which I love as well.

I find it especially interesting since for last half a year we're having
weekly jam sessions with some friends of mine, and I get a bit similar
feel listening to this in the way things spontaneously evolve and build
up...

For those who haven’t kept up, the Moritz von Ozwald Trio is a
collaboration between Moritz von Ozwald, Max Loderbauer of Sun
Electric and Sasu Ripatti AKA Luomo/Vladislav Delay. They’ve played
live a few times, garnering much wider interest than you’d expect from
one-off local gigs, unfortunately brought further in to the spotlight
by Moritz Von Oswald’s recent rumoured stroke, just before the trio
were due to play at last year’s DEAF.

The Trio’s long-awaited first release, Vertical Ascent, is now
available for download for £4 from the Honest Jon’s website. There are
physical media available for purchase in most vinyl/CD purveyors as well.

I’ve only had the time to listen to it twice today, and my thoughts
are mixed. On one hand, this could never be as good as it looks on
paper. On the other hand, the end result is not entriely what I would
have expected. It’s more percussive than I anticipated. It’s also very
composed, with longer tracks that vary considerably and last quite
some time. This isn’t that surprising given recent work like von
Ozwald’s remixes of Auricle/Bio/On and Watamu Beach. Unfortunately,
like those remixes, I feel that they promise more than they deliver.
There are elements that distinguish it from these recent remixes, and
they are welcome, but the end result initially feels the same. The
tracks never really seem to arrive. It’s all ascent, stopping shot of
the suggested apex.

There’s plenty here to be excited about, but based on first
impressions, this isn’t likely to be getting much play in 2010 or
beyond. The third and fourth tracks on Vertical Ascent may prove to be
exceptions to that critique with repeated listens, but I’m not holding
my breath based on my lack of continued enthusiasm for his recent
(re)work.

...

I've since listened a couple of times more and feel the same. This
isn't to say that it doesn't build nicely, it's just that it feels
like it should be going somewhere but the tracks just sort of stop.

Cheers,

Tristan

heard people had cracked discs, I checked my own and three of them were
cracked. None of them were even opened more than a few times.
Chain Reaction figured it out and moved to the uglier 'soft covers'
eventually. And I can't find a few of the CDs I have sitting in stacks
of slimlines.
The notion of a CD banging around on bare metal as packaging always
seemed just this side of the legendary Durutti Column LP that used
sandpaper for the jacket. Interesting aesthetically, but a tad shy on
the function meter (unless you hate Vini Reilly)

jeff

Not that it's either here nor there, but I don't think that at normal
temps, the difference between the expansion rate of stamp metal and
whatever plastic they make CDs from differs that much.

I think it's as much the fact that a plastic CD case's spindle-holder
is made of plastic that bows in when you push on the CD, then pops
back out so that a little lip on each tine of the spindle-thingie
keeps the CD in place. There is little or no outward force on the hole
in the CD.

It's very, very buggy and do not install if you plan to use 5.2.2 or
play live without a re-install - in short version 6 screws over 5 big time.

You should print the thread and read it on paper, that will add some
warmth to it :) or even transcribe it down to paper and than read it :))

IMHO it's best to use best of both worlds. For pure sound analog sounds
better than software, but software can do some things that no analog

And since I seam to be in hyperactive upload mode :) I already have
another mix online, recorded this tuesday at chilli space event in

First half is mostly dub-techno (basic channel, monolake, 2000 and one,

(burial, kode 9, ina kamoze, linton k. johnson...) and finishes with
some abstract ambient dub stuff.

(313) New DJ set

2006-05-17 Thread Jernej Marusic
I've managed to record my DJ set last friday, at the opening party of
Festival pomladi (Spring Festival) at Club K4 in Ljubljana:

www.octex.si/audio/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's a diverse set, from dub to moodymann and aphex twin...

There were some minor technical difficulties at the beginning, and some
confusing moments (I was at high school reunion before the gig, so my
alcohol level was rather high :)

But I decided it's suitable to go in public anyway.

I don't have time to write a tracklist, but if
anyone needs any track ID let me know.

2006-02-19 Thread Jernej Marusic
In december it was often snowing in Ljubljana, that's why I decided to
record myslef a little soundtrack for walking and driving around the
city covered with snow.
The result is almost 100minutes mix of mostly minimal-dub - layered,
filtered and delayed almost beyond recognition.
Unfortunately I somehow managed to record everything in mono, but the
soundtrack has served me well nonetheless and is now available for
everyone else to enjoy...

Actually it is, but it's full of interuptions. It looks like they were
having a lot of problems with the stream and they were playing some other
music in between, plus they are talking over parts of it. So there's
basically only half the UR gig, with other music in between, but it's better
than nothing :)

UR start at the end of first file (only couple of min) and play all the way
through the second, and the last 15 min are in the last file.

Damn, that Sandstorms track really is catchy, I had this real audio clip on
repeat for last half an hour :)
it has the same late night mood as Juan Attkins M 69 Starlight.

Those ambient cuts also sound good.

Weird, I never had any problems with Ableton? Never crashed on me, except
once when I was playing around with some buggy VST fx. But I haven't used it
as ReWire master yet, just as slave into Nuendo.
I'm using it on PC btw.

Lol, universal controller for your entire home :)

Actually if you look at the pictures on his web page, he seams to have added
some labeling later on
http://www.monolake.de/monodeck.html

IMHO the biggest problem with this kind of home made controllers, is to make
a good box for them. Especially one that is small and sturdy enough to carry
around for live gigs and survive an airplane ride.

I've been looking at this one as well. Can you describe a bit more, how do
the faders feel, an if they have only 127 steps of resolution or can they do
1024 (like the Mackie Control)?
I already have ReMote25 and Doepfer PocketDial for general controll and
playing live, but I'm searching for a controller with good 100mm high
resolution faders for studio work.

There's a streaming video recording from Sunday of Main stage (including the
amazing Fracois K set), available on the Movement page. Direct link is:

Looks like Francois mostly played of laptop (Traktor or Ableton?).

High Tech Soul hasn't been streaming at all today :(

Still it's great to have some streaming at all. Been listening to it all the
time while studying and working (and wishing I could be there).

Had the stream playing on my laptop yesterday as I went to sleep, and woke
up middle of the night, just as they announced Francois K, but then fell
back to sleep as he started :)

Dman, I forgot to finish my mail before pressing send :)

By moving to mp3 (or something similar) small labels would save the money,
that would otherwise go into pressing vinyl, and maybe make some profit
again.

But I definitely don't like this kind of future very much, as I love to have
physical record to hold in hands and look at the artwork...

A lot of labels have seen a decreas of sales due to p2p networks. And since
a lot of small labels were already runing on sales that barely coverd the
pressing costs, and maybe made them some money, now this decreas has pushed
them over the treshold, and they are now only loosing money.

RE: (313) was groovetech now itunes

2003-09-23 Thread Jernej Marusic
If artists/labels start selling music online by themselves, on their one web
page, how are you going to find it?
It would work for establish artists/labels, because people would be
searching for their music, but lets say someone totally new appears. He
set's up a web page, puts his music online, and nothing happens. It's the
same as if he would record CDRs, go in front of his house and sell them
there (ok, a bit easier to get to him over internet :), but you get the
picture.

Like it or not, there will always be some middle man.

RE: (313)ableton/finalscratch?

2003-08-26 Thread Jernej Marusic
Ups, I just noticed that on PC final scratch still only runs on Linux
(they've ported it from BeOS to Linux some time ago). I thought that since
they've merged it with Traktor it would also run in windows, like normal
traktor.
On mac it runs normally in OSX so I guess on Mac it could be theoretically
possible to run traktor and ableton together? but than from what I've heard
ableton runs really slowly on OSX.

Well from listening to this strings for a couple of times, I can tell that
at the beginning they start the same as jaguar but than it gets different
really quickly. Than at another point there's another part that sounds the
same as jaguar strings for a bit longer but than gets different again.
So Rolando probably did get inspiration from this track, but even if he did
he changed the strings quite allot beyond those couple starting notes, so he
deffinitely didn't sampel them. Also that "note waver" is quite generic and
I've heard it, or really simialar, used in many different melodies (I think
I've also heard it in a couple of old movie soundtracks).

I've heard him 2 months ago. Really boring hard techno (schranz), and his
mixing was also boring. He seams to like playing with gadgets, so he had
Alesis AirFX, Korg KaosPad2, some music to midi sync thing and laptop with
final scratch. Most of the mixes was like one track playing with fx, second
track playing with fx... but all the rave kiddies seam to like him around

2003-07-16 Thread Jernej Marusic
I also don't DJ (well sometimes with laptop), just do live acts.
Once I was playing on chill out floor in a club and I started my set with
mostly glitchy/ambient stuff, and after ~30min someone comes to me and
starts complaining that it's about time for some beats to come in.
The weirdest gig I had was playing at new years party of Slovenian ministry
of culture. I got all weird kind of requests. The funniest one was a girl
that came to me and asked me if I could play something more danceable, like
foxtrot :)

I agree, if a record is good why stop playing it. I get more annoyed with
DJs who only play the latest records (and there's a lot of them), even if

Good record is a good record no meter how old is it or how often you hear
it.

live set was just as you described. Great music all tracks from his Visions
Of Blah album, but don't know how much of it was really live. He did use
Ableton, and Peavey fader box, so at least it look's like he was setting the
levels for separate tracks. But nonetheless I would still go to see him
again if he was playing some place near.
I've also heard Jelinek one evening later, and he was amazing. All music
blended beautifully together, unlike fehlmann where you could hear where one
track ended and another one started. I think he was playing mostly new
unreleased material, some really beautiful music. And he had someone with
him who was providing some great visuals.

Oh yea. There's nothing like Terence Parker's Summer Madness mix from
Frequency Detroit, for summer BBQs.

Here in Ljubljana we usually have a lot of fog during winter, and nothing
goes better with fog than basic channel like music :)

I've hear T. Raumschmiere in Berlin two months ago. I like some of his

with sample guitars... and seamed to have focused most of his energy on

(313) Track ID

2003-03-31 Thread Jernej Marusic
I've been listening to Jeff Mills live @ Virgin Megastore, Paris, and he
plays this track, or maybe its just acapela over another track. Anyway I
would like to know what's the track that contains this vocals:

Question of the day,
Who stole the soul.

Who turned this special delivery
into a box of ? chocolates

Sometimes I wish I was still green.

Oh I sound like my mama

Boy put that teddy...?...
and take of that noise you're listening to.

And me and Chuck still want to know
who took the sunshine
and turned it into microwaveable popcorn for profit.

We need more Erica Badus and DeAngelos
and less children with no destiniy

And I am by no means anti pop music
simply because pop is not a musical form
..

Heard him live twice. Both time he was using laptop with ableton live, and
he had someone with him that was generating some really nice visuals with a
laptop.
Last time was at club transmediale in berlin in beginning of february, he
played some beautiful music. I think I recognized a couple of tracks on his
new album on ~scape (bought the CD later), but I've heard he mostly played
some totally new unreleased material.

I even have a couple of pictures of him playing :)

To me it's more important what the music is like, than if the production is
crystal clear. I also wouldn't consider drumcode releases as marvel of
production anyway, they are just over compressed.
Listen to something like Carl Craig's More Songs about Food And
Revolutionary Art, there's a record that has great production and great
music, or is that also not suppose to be techno anymore?

RE: (313) ableton live 2 beta 2 out (public)

2002-12-20 Thread Jernej Marusic
One way for doing live PAs would be to get a bunch of musicians playing
live keyboards... and you would be behind the mixer working the effects,
and kind of conducting them when to play something... If you are alone
it's not physically possible to really play everything live.

When I saw mad Professor live, it was something similar. He had a band
playing on the stage, and he was playing the mixer and effects.

and i found everytime he touched the keys i got bored. the thing is,
playing full 'live' or not, when you're playing the keyboard you're also

assuring the crowd that you're *not* tweaking the bass, dropping the
cymbal
line, bringing in a synth solo, or sliding up a string line an octave.
whether or not you're doing that i don't think is the point: making the

crowd think you are *is*, and when you're playing a keyboard you are
assuring them that you're not.

Don't forget the unfunky tr*nce bass lines. I don't know if I ever heard
a tr*nce track that didn't have either one bass not between each kick
drum (pk pow pk pow...), or an arpaggiated 3 note bass line that goes
"tadadam tadadam ...". I've challenged some people I know who play
tr*nce to name me one track with different bass line, and they we're
unable to :)
I'm talking of modern tr*nce, as there seamed to be more diversity in
what was classified as tr*nce pre 95 or something.

| I know what is trance music...It was huge here.
| Could we try to find a list of differences...
| On the paper, finaly there is common points...
| Melodies, chords, ...
| But in the reality...
| I give you the first difference ;-)
| 1)Detroit music is funky.

That's definitely true - I can't remember if it was Eddie Fowlkes or
Kevin Saunderson who said "the hardness in techno comes from funk", but
I've always seen funk as the main differentiator between Detroit techno
and the trance sound.

What makes trance unfunky? I think that a large amount of it comes down
to the drum programming. Trance producers, I can imagine, must glue over
the "shuffle" button on their drum machines so that it can never be
turned on. Also, you can imagine that if a trance producer does anything
with the hi-hats other than "open hi-hat between each kick drum, closed
hi-hat on the beat", he/she would get arrested by the Trance Police for
heresy!

But even when Detroit records use those most basic of drum patterns,
there is still a funk there that you don't find in trance. Why?

Brendan

RE: (313) Studio Monitors

NS-10 are not recommended as only monitors. All the pro studios only use
them so that people can hear the mix on the same monitors in every
studio, or to simulate lo quality hi-fi speakers... you never see them
used as only monitors. They also seam to be useful as a "magnifying
glass" for middle frequencies. But in general they sound pretty awful,
and you wouldn't want to listen to them for a long time.

(313) Octex live

2002-10-21 Thread Jernej Marusic
I've put a recording of my live-act on the web:
www.soundoflj.com/octex/audio.html

It was actually recorded in my studio as a preparation for my live-act
in Modern Gallery in Ljubljana, last week.
Due to lack of server space it's encoded in 64kbps, and there's some
noise as it was recorded of tape.

All comments greatly appreciated.

I _think_ "intelligent" was opposed to what is called "dance" or
"eurodance" in Europe, acts like Aqua for example... I preferred the
terms "armchair techno" and "bleep music", but they had less success...

RE: [313] KMS (again)

2002-08-23 Thread Jernej Marusic
Haven't heard his mix cd on monoid, but I've heard him live once, and it
was trainwreck after trainwreck. Maybe he was trying to hard to do some
quick mixing and managed to properly beat match only about 10% of the
records. But that was some 2 years ago, so maybe he's better now.

RE: [313] Final Scratch...

You need the laptop because it does all the processing, as far as I know
the external part is just an I/O box, everything else is done in
software.

True, but being able to play Mp3's you already have would be handy. I
don't think it'll replace your vinyl collection just extend it. The
other problem is you need a laptop. I know it doesn't support it at the
moment but it'd be a good idea to put in support for Mp3 player
connection, ie. load up all your tracks onto Mp3 player and take that
with you. This would probably mean extending the unit (for UI) and extra

cost. I can't understand why they didn't put a small HD in the unit? or
something like a zip slot.

RE: [313] sound proofing

2002-05-30 Thread Jernej Marusic
The foam itself won't help. It will absorb high and mid frequencies, but
won't stop the bass. To stop the bass you need mass.
There's a great page about acoustics @ www.acoustics101.com.
