Dolores,
For a male lineage you can use Reports > Chart Reports > Lineage.
For other lines and lines between any other two people who are related
use Tools > Relationship Calculator and see the Print options there.

When you click on Help on the main menu bar a new menu bar appears, on
which the 6th button is "Request feature."

I use the Notes tabs a lot but I have never found it troublesome to use
my keyboard to capitalise in the usual way. In fact, I use the keyboard
for Bold a lot because it's quicker to do that rather than take my hand
off the keyboard to use the mouse.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes & photos re ancestry

2020-09-30 Thread Cathy Pinner
Your photos stay where they are, on your computer. The gedcom only
includes the path to them so if the gedcom is used to upload your tree
to a website or to send to someone else, the media is left behind.

Event Notes seem to go to unnamed source when you upload to Ancestry.
General Notes etc go into the Notes field in Ancestry which can only be
seen by the tree owner and those invited.

Don,

Tag all the persons with 1 tag then do a search for the tag,
FROM the search results you can scroll thru the persons on the left and see
only their notes by selecting Notes on the right.

Hope that helps

RE: [33A-1B07A2C3-040E] Re: [LegacyUG] Notes - Added warning message if notes are edited and then Cancel or X is clicked.

2014-05-16 Thread Michele/Support
Jay,

1) When you send a message to Support the conversation needs to stay in
Support. When you pull a conversation out of the ticketing system and then try
to continue the conversation here it gets very confusing because the tech that
you were working with might not see your message here. Not all of the techs
monitor this list and those that do, do it as they can. Someone else (not even
necessarily a tech) will start to intervene and then wires will get crossed.

2) When you sent in the original ticket, you were quoting something that
someone else said on this list. It is a better idea for the person with the
actual problem to write in themselves. You added that you had previously
reported a “similar problem.” I know that you were just trying to help them
but again, it gets confusing.

3) When I tested this originally it was working as expected and I sent you
a screenshot to show you this. I just tried it again and it isn’t working for
me so I need to do some testing before I move it up the chain to Brian.

4) I will respond back to you on the original ticket.

Michele,

I just discovered the new update to Legacy, did that, and then tested the
problem again. On my data base and the sample data base.

Note that I almost always work from the pedigree view, then click on the person
to open, and then on Notes to add or edit them.

Typing in "Test" and clicking the "x" or "Cancel" does not give a warning
message and does not save the new data.

I did get a strange, not the usual warning, with one unintentional test in the
previous version. Apparently the problem is not fixed. I think that I got
numerous messages from Brian saying it was fixed about 10 days ago, but I am
quite sure I have deleted his messages. Please pass this on to Brian.

Slight difference from the behaviour in 7.5. In 7.5, an Abandon Changes box
appeared when the Cancel button was clicked, or the Escape key was pressed.
There was no message when clicking the X (close) icon. This is, I think, the
correct behaviour according to MS standards.

Hi Paula,
The option to include Event Notes in a Report should stick like other settings.
If it really isn't, that's a bug. I haven't time to check at the moment but it
has been sticking.

The rationale? I've never seen a satisfactory one though I can see that being
able to strip notes in some circumstances is useful. However, I can't imagine
wanting to do it for all events. So for me, the ability to control them via the
Event Sentence Definitions was perfect.

the same result happened as with v7 under which Legacy did lose data. OK, looks

Since Legacy 8 does not lose any user data I do not know why you think there
are more changes needed. The only way data would be "lost" in Legacy 8 would be
if the user edits the vital event notes to remove the Event Description: text
of the description line(s) from those notes and then it would be their removal
of that text not Legacy which deletes the data.

Thanks for those comments, Brian. It's nice to know that the issue was at least
partially addressed in v8. And like I mentioned, it is an obscure bug but the
bombshell remains in that once the user makes those steps in swapping an event
with a Vital Record Event, data in the Notes are destroyed by Legacy. There is
no Oops button; there is no Go Back button. The data is lost forever unless one
can open up a backup to retrieve it. The problem is that a user would not be
aware that Legacy destroyed data in the Notes field unless they specifically

The swap difficulty with notes is no longer as problem in Legacy 8.
There is still a difficulty transferring between a regular and a vital event
however. The Vital Events have no Description field. To work around this in
Legacy 8 any Description from the regular event is transferred to the Vital
Event Notes as the first line (existing event notes are appended after this
line). If there is any possibility you may want to switch back do not remove
that first line of the vital event notes. If you later switch the vital event
with a regular event the description will be replaced in the regular event with
the contents of that first line.

In Legacy 7 my testing showed that the notes transfer correctly to the vital
event. It is notes from the vital event that got cut off when they were
transferred to a regular event. This is the opposite of what you imply in your
message. Legacy 7 will not be fixed.

RE: [LegacyUG] Notes

2014-01-28 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I agree with your suggestion about the use of the Notes fields and I tend to
use them quite a bit. However, there is an obscure bug in their use that could
present a minefield of disaster unless the user knows about this. This obscure
bug involves the use of “Alt.” events such as “Alt.Birth” or
“Alt.Death”. For example, whenever I come across such a bit of data that
presents an alternate date of birth, I create such an Alt.Birth event and then
I use the Notes tab of that alternate event to add my notes or a description of
why this date may differ from the main Birth event and other explanations. In a
few cases, I’ve had a long text note that came via email and it was copied and
pasted into the Notes tab of the alternate event.

Now, here is where the bug occurs. Imagine that as one’s research continues,
you confirm that the alternate event has the correct data but you’d still like
to keep the other event just for continued research reasons. Legacy makes it
easy for you to just select the Alternate Event, then click on Options, and
then select “Swap with Information”. Beware! If you have more than 255
characters in your Alternate Event Notes tab, and you swap the events, you will
lose all your notes beyond the first 255 characters. In other words, the
transfer of text is limited to only 255 characters. If you can remember this
bombshell, I’d suggest you first copy the lengthy notes to the General Notes
area, complete the Swap, and then copy the lengthy notes back to where they got
cut off.

I don’t know if this bug still exists in v8 but it was still there in the last
v7. Will it ever get fixed? Maybe, but I’m not holding my breath because there
seems to be an infestation of other bugs in v8 that are more pressing than this
minor issue.

There were a couple of posts about how many characters/words the notes fields
hold. The question was answered pretty quickly and I was tied up at the time
but there is something that I wanted to add.

There are MANY notes fields in Legacy that I think are underutilized. There
are birth notes, baptism notes, death notes, burial notes, medical notes,
location notes, event notes, image notes, marriage notes and marriage event
notes.

What is nice about these note fields is that they are specific. If you put
everything in the General Notes or Research Notes it can get crowded and hard
to wade through.

In the report options screen, you can tell Legacy to print all of these other
notes fields in addition to the regular General, Research, Medical notes for
any report that allows notes. Location Notes can be printed on a Location
Report (available at View > Master Lists > Locations > Options > Print >
Location Report).

Just another tool you can use :)

What is nice about these note fields is that they are specific. If you put
everything in the General Notes or Research Notes it can get crowded and
hard to wade through.

In the report options screen, you can tell Legacy to print all of these
other notes fields in addition to the regular General, Research, Medical
notes for any report that allows notes. Location Notes can be printed on a
Location Report (available at View > Master Lists > Locations > Options >
Print > Location Report).

Just another tool you can use :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes in event sentences

2014-01-15 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Tony,

I assume you are using Legacy 8.

In the Report and the Webpage options you need to find the Event
options and make sure Event Notes are ticked for inclusion.

This checkbox overrides the [Notes] in the Event Sentence.

If this doesn't solve your problem, check that the Include Notes
checkbox on the event itself is checked AND the checkbox for notes on
the Event Definition.
In Legacy 8, instead of having just the [Notes] in the Event
Definition, we have a heap of checkboxes in a variety of places.

There is or was a bug if you used the setting at Options>Customise
7.10 to put source citation after notes.

I presume you are using Legacy

checked the box for Add Event Notes?  It
is under Other Options on the Event Options screen, accessed

If you have tried the suggestions made by Kathy and Cathy and you still have

[LegacyUG] Notes Problem in V8

2013-11-28 Thread Belinda
Hello everyone,

Was just wondering if anyone else had any trouble with events notes not
showing in descendant narrative reports? If so I'll report it as a bug, but
if it is just me I may have altered a setting somewhere without realising
it. Although what that setting may be, I don't know.

I use this feature extensively but now in V8 the events are listed in the
reports but the notes have been stripped out. On example I found had a few
blank lines and then the source citation number. Most of the others
stripped the lot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Belinda

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes Screen Unreadable

2013-11-20 Thread Sherry/Support
On our website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com, go to Help Center >
Troubleshooting Help > Solutions by Error Description > Screen
Problems > Black Screens (paraphrasing the last two since I'm not
sure of the exact section - just search the webpage for "black"

You'll find a solution there, along with a file to download. If you
have Win7 or 8, save the file to the c:\Windows\SysWOW folder (again,
not 100% on the folder name, but there's only one sysWOW folder)

Sorry I'm not in a position to look up what I can't remember!

Sincerely,
Sherry

[LegacyUG] Notes Screen Unreadable

2013-11-20 Thread Prescott Smith
How do you change the background color in the Individual Note section
without changing the main view's color? By Notes screen is black
background, black font=unreadable. It has been this way since installation.
I can see how to change it for the main views, but not for the Notes
screen. Using Win 7, 64-bit.

Notes that you don't want included in reports, web pages, exports, etc

Legacy won't include that data unless you select to include Private Notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes in Legacy

2013-10-07 Thread Brian/Support
Legacy does not use the ! to mark sections of notes for printing. I may
be wrong since I was never a big PAF user but I think the ! in Notes in
PAF was a way to mark sources or maybe it was events. In any event it
was something which PAF did not support in early versions so the !
marking was a work around.

Legacy does have the opposite method of using [[]] to surround text in
Notes which are private and will not be included in reports and Web
Pages unless you tell Legacy to include private information.

It would be a big editing job to surround all the portions of your Notes
with [[ and ]] to suppress the notes you do not want included in your
web pages but that is the only thing I can suggest to selectively
include portions of the Notes..

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes associated with certain events

2013-03-19 Thread Dick Nixon
Ron,
You've hit on one of my major complaints with Legacy reporting. I
bring it up every year or so...there might be some more stuff in the
archives.

If you look at the Individual, Family Group, and Chronology reports
you will find numerous inconsistencies and issues. As you point out,
Chronology treats the big 4 (BBDM) pretty well, but the others
disconnect the notes and stuff them at the end. You could try to
create your own BBD events in the IR and FGS but they would double up
in the Chronology report. OK if you use only one or the other but not
a good solution.

If you dig in, you will find a lot of inconsistencies in these 3
reports. Eg., the FGS automatically adds a blank line at the end of
each event note but the IR does not. If you add line feeds to make one
report look good, one or both of the others get worse. Etc.

I had a list of 12 or 15 such related issues but support would only
agree to look a them if I put each one on a separate submission. I
finally sent them to Geoff, his request, but he hasn't acknowledged
receipt.

So yes, I agree with you. These reports could be so much more useful
with a little work. There may be historic reasons for the particular
FGS format, and compatibility concerns, but it would be easy to
generate additional versions of these reports that would be self
consistent.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes; Events

2012-10-03 Thread Brian/Support
It would help if you said which reports you are using where you want the
extra space.

In the narrative reports add [cr] to the end of the event introduction
to add an extra carriage return between the intro and the first event.
If it is other style reports tell us which ones or look for an event
intro sentence in the report settings where you can add the same [cr]
code to add a carriage return.

[LegacyUG] Notes; Events

2012-10-03 Thread Pat Hickin
On reports I would like to have a space between the words/heading "General
Notes" and the actual contents. With notes, it's easy enough, as I can
just insert a HardReturn and leave a blank line at the beginning of the
notes.

But between the words introducing the Events and the first Event, I don't
know how to accomplish this. I tried to insert a blank event but Legacy
would not accept that. So I tried just putting a period in the first Event
Name and leaving all the other fields blank, but that period really doesn't
look so good on reports.
I don't see a way to insert a carriage return, but maybe I'm overlooking
something.

Thanks for your ideas,
Pat

It would print out as you entered it. But the way to Source each
individual "note" would be to enter some sort of abbreviation or
indication at the end of each paragraph.

Say, for example, the various Sources for the Notes includes "the
Anderson Family Tree", "the Barnes photo album" and "Charles's Diary."
At the end of the paragraph dealing with info from the Family Tree you
type "[Anderson]", at the end of the para dealing with the photos you
type "[Barnes]" and so on.

[LegacyUG] Notes

2012-08-10 Thread Bonnie Samuel
Notes, notes everywhere! But how to make a sensible journal out of the jumble
the numerous note areas create in reports. Is it possible to put notes under
"general" with footnotes? That is, sequential notes each with a source attached
- would that print out as a narrative? The only way I see now is to transfer a
report to a word processing program and rewrite! I love Legacy, but this is a
weak area in my view.

[LegacyUG] Notes formatting

2012-03-21 Thread Neil Bell
Many times when you GEDCOM in data from another genealogy program the
notes field will not end with the appropriate period (.). Some programs
automatically add a period at the end of a note when generating output
reports. Legacy does not do this.

One can go into the sentence definitions edit and add the period after
the notes field. However for notes that do contain the period this
would result in two periods at the end of the sentence.

I don't _think_ it would be very difficult to have the option of adding
a period when one is not present in the original note. Obviously I
could be wrong here about the difficulty of doing this but I do strongly
feel this is highly desirable. Perhaps an optional feature to add a
period could be considered much like the existing option concerning
spaces following commas in all location fields.

The enforced period would make narrative reports so much easier to read!

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes in Events field?

2012-02-25 Thread Marg Strong
I'm glad to have discovered there is a notes place for events. There are times
I want to comment on the event and add my interpretation and how it is
important.

There are a lot of features in legacy deluxe to discover. I was using mine in a
way that basic would have sufficed, and want to start using all the features.
But it will take awhile to learn them. Especially since I'm also trying to
research a lot and other stuff happens, like having to deal with a computer
browser freezing problem for several hours this morning.

It was major frustrating. Thank you for responding, Michele.

RE: [LegacyUG] Notes in Events field?

2012-02-25 Thread Michele Lewis
Why can’t you just add notes to the event itself? If you want to add something
that you think will make the information clearer you can always put it in
brackets [ ] to show that what is in the brackets is information that you have
added and not part of the event itself.

Here are a couple of simple examples,

This is an entry I have for the 1820 census in Perry Co, MS for Silas Simmons

Silas Simmons
1 free white male under age 10 [William]
1 free white male age 16 to under 26 [Silas]
1 free white female under age 10 [Elizabeth]
1 free age 16 to under 26 [Janet]

I added WHO each person was because I knew but it wasn't on the census record
itself.

Here is one for a Cemetery entry

Marker reads:
Simmons
[2 infant slabs, no other information, buried in same plot as Arthur A. Simmons
and Mattie S. Dickson]

I am implying that the two infants belong to Arthur and Mattie and it explains
why I think that even though there is nothing on the marker to say so.

As the information grows more sparse it isn't a problem, but with more

"notes" field" they aren't connected with the event.

I know this is probably a no brainer for those who are more familiar with the

[LegacyUG] Notes -size of text

2011-05-12 Thread Yvonne Morehouse
I keep a lot of information under Notes. When it opens, I get a small
window with reasonably large type. As I expand Notes to full screen
size, the text is very small. So, next, I use zoom to enlarge the text
to 20 point size and the text is very readable.

Even so, I always want the text to automatically open in 20 point...I
don't want to have to click to enlarge every time I use Notes. I didn't
see any help for this so I'm appealing to the Group for help.

Thanks, Yvonne Morehouse

As you're aware, there are several ways of doing this. When you say you
don't want to use the individual's Notes field, does that rule out also
the Birth Notes field (the one behind the +)?

Personally, I add such comments/conclusions to the individual's Research
Notes field.

[LegacyUG] Notes for choosing a birth date

2010-11-17 Thread Jean Suplick
I have an individual for whom 5 sources all provide slightly different
birth dates. I would like to add a narrative to the birth event
containing my analysis of those records and drawing a conclusion for
the birth date. I prefer not to use the Notes field for the
individual. I don't quite see how to do that on an event (not source
details) basis for births & deaths. I do see how I can add custom
events and how there's a notes field there.

Am I missing the obvious?

Thanks,

First, make sure Legacy is set to display "General Notes", if that is where
all your notes are located. I have 'Lost" mine when I switched to "Research"
notes and forgot to switch back to "General".

If that is not the problem, backup your data then do the "File, Repair", and
then if that does not work, try the procedure Dennis suggested.

If you normally use only the General Notes tab, look at the top of the Notes
screen and make sure you haven't accidentally clicked on (and reset your
default to) Research Notes or Medical Notes.

I remember what you describe as happening to me in the past, and that was my
problem...I didn't even realize there were separate Research or Medical Notes
screens until that moment.

I take it you are referring to the down arrow, the + and the Geo
Location database buttons?

These are built into the program and you cannot not show them, as with
some icons. It suggests you have a faulty installation. I would back
up your family file and then reinstall the program.

Bring up the Individual's Information window (that's the title of the
window you're talking about). Then play around with the height and width
of the window. Too small in one direction seems to cause the loss of an
icon or two.

Not that it helps you, but I have the latest Legacy build and the icons you
speak of are to the right of the surname on my screen. Since they seem to be
built into the program, I don't see a way to turn the icons on or off.

All of them have gone blank.
I also had it "add" a field to my note: Cause of Death - and that
started appearing with the notes field box below it - that appeared in
every case as I opened the notes.

Now - that has gone away and only the blank field remains.

Meanwhile the notes icon is still active - instead of the blank grey
page - indicating that Legacy senses there are notes somewhere. But,
where is the question :)

Welcome, Rick.

I think the key is to be thinking about the potential reports that you will
generate from the family file, not just about what you, the user of Legacy,
will see when browsing the family file. Info in event notes will be printed
on various types of reports (unless that option is de-selected on the report
settings). Source detail text is there as a backup for you and any
researchers that have access to your digital data. True, you can choose to
display source detail text with the source citation on reports (footnotes,
etc.), but that is not the default.

Specifically for censuses, there have been discussions about this on the
LUG. Some people even put census details in both places, plus images of the
document. My preference is to ensure that the source details capture
everything that is relevant and in a reasonably verbatum manner, with any
interpretations only in the Comments field. Then in the event notes I put a
more condensed, readable summary of the event, ever sensitive to the
impatient reader of a wordy report. (This applies to events like a census
event. I wouldn't normally add any census-related notes to a birth event,
for example, when citing the census as a source for the birth.)

I am new to Legacy and its notes and sources.  So I have been watching the
training videos.
In entering Sources, Geoff created a Master Source for a birth date and then
added text to the
Source Details (transcribed from the book).  Then attached the source to to
birth date.

Then in adding an event, a census, Goeff went to the Master Source Clipboard
and created a
Master Source, but did not transcribe any text in to the source detail.
Then added the event, the
Census.  Then he transcribed the census info into the notes of the Event,
and attached the Source.
So this source has the notes in the event section and not in the Source
Details.  Although it can
can be added there as well.

So the question is, is there a reason to put the transcribed the text of
your findings into the Source Details
and not the notes in one case.  And then in another event put the text in
the notes and not in the
Sources Details.  Or should it be in both? Or does it even mater?

I put the transcribed census in the Event notes. These are choices not rules. I
have been doing this for decades and won't change my system.  The important
part is that future recievers of your info can understand it, and prove it.

display source detail text with the source citation on reports (footnotes,
etc.), but that is not the default.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Notes and Source Details
