Three years ago it was Bosch for about $110 delivered. I was an
idiot not to buy one. Now it's $200 for "Similar to original Bosch"
from the same seller. (well, sort of the same seller, it was dieselmot
on the other side of the pond selling the Bosch testers originally,
this is dieselmotusa)

Prior to repainting my 350SDL, I was also considering replacing the

choices...the dealer for OEM glass or aftermarket. Is there a big
difference? Triumph auto glass (a national chain) quoted $250 for their
"standard" glass...US made by Pilkington (sp?). Have not priced the
dealer yet.. Anyone have any experiences with quality with aftermarket

Re: [MBZ] Aux Fan Pooped Out

2005-09-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the fuse first, then relay. Both in the fuse box on a W123, I
think. Also check the big rectangular ceramic resistor (up front
somewhere, not exactly sure on that model) for corroded wiring. This
will allow it to run at full speed at high engine temps, but fail at AC
speed. Check by grounding the wire that goes to the switch on the
thermostat housing -- must cause the fan to run at high speed.

The fan itself very rarely fails, although they can.

Up to 75 wad D-jet, 76 and up was CIS. The older ones has way more
power and as the years went by the power just kept going down for

I care about it because those jackasses keep me from getting to my job. When
they finally figure out that I'm going to keep my siren and air horn blowing
in back of them, then they try feebly to get out of the way by cutting in front
of some poor person who is waiting like they should. When I was new on the
job I had a Captain who swore that on his last day he was going to drive, and
run over the dimwits that did that. Now that I have that position, I'm thinking
he was absolutely right. They should get rammed by the rig and left to rot.

If you were hanging upside down trapped in your car because some jackass
clipped you as he cut in front of you and you're busy bleeding to death waiting
for me to get there, I'll bet you'd think different.

Not that I have strong opinions on this subject or anything

The S500 is a nice car, but I like the lines of the 420 and 560 much
better than the new body. I think the 560 represents what a fantastic
Mercedes used to be.

What is chassis number for the S500 (the older one 92-?)? Is it the

Let's see on ebay there is an s500 for sale for 20K, but no history
info, one at 12k, some at 24k.
one for 5K with a salvage history, flooded, but claim it's run the
last 12 years.

There is one at 3.5k, but the word abused does come to mind. I wonder
if the missing steering wheel airbag is a indication of some

other incident... Let alone the horrors of the seats...

David, I am assuming you are talking about the upper Midwest. I live in
Wichita, Kansas and lived most of the rest of my life in Springfield,
Missouri. I have never had any rust problems on any car I have owned. I
agree in Chicago, you cannot keep most cars from rusting. I had an uncle
who had a little car dealership. He used to buy 5-6 cars at the auction
in Springfield and drive them to Chicago where he could sell them for
three times what he paid for them. Dealers in Chicago were always
amazed to see a 10 year old Chevy Caprice with no rust on it. (My Uncle
liked the Caprice and bought all of them that he could find in the
80's).

Well that assumes that you can find an owner idiot that will sell you
a fixed perfect w140 for the same price as a broken w140. Since most
of that money is going to fix faulty engineering it's hard for a
smart owner to prevent it from becoming toast even if you do all the
preventative maintenance. Blower regulators that melt, vacuum/
pressure pumps (two) which kick the bucket, an A/C system which
requires you to replace the evaporator, and window regulators that
break because the windows are heavy, let alone engine wiring
harnesses that decompose because of the heat and the desire for easy
recycling, helpfully frying your MAF.

radiators and so forth -

Are the hoods, grills, fenders, etc the same? You've got a four banger
and a turbo to look at side by side, right? My problem is neither of
the proposed project cars are available to me for comparison.

The fenders, hood, grill are all the same, but the rear of the radiator
in the 2.5 diesels are maybe 2" closer to the front of the car (allowing
a longer engine to be inserted) and that changes the body work that
connects the left and the right fenders and supports the radiator. Not
something that can easily be changed!

Just measured my '85 190D and the '87 2.5t and the engine compartment of
the 2.5t is 2" longer. This was done by moving the radiator forward
(it's thinner too) and redesigning all the metal work between the
fenders so the engine compartment extends 2" further forward. This would
NOT be easy to replicate.

I have NOT examined the 201.034 to see if a diesel could fit.

You could try calling Rick Ellinger at http://rc-imports.com/

He knows the 201.034 chassis VERY intimately!!

your car - not stainless, but excellent quality - and they WILL replaced
parts that fail (or at least have for me). They cost considerably less
than Timevalve.

On a diesel the average exhaust life (excluding collision damage) is
going to be may 10+ years even in Pittsburgh (where cars often rust away
in 5-8 years).

Assuming you had to spend that much to fix everything that is broken would be a
good bet you didn't buy it in the first place. If there is a lot that needs
fixing its pretty much a sign that the previous owner was a idiot and didn't
take care of it.

[MBZ] Aux Fan Pooped Out

2005-09-28 Thread Bob Rentfro
It appears my aux fan has pooped out. The manual says, "check the supplementary
fan for function, for this purpose pull the two flat plugs from the temperature
switches ( 14 or 15) and connect to each other (connecting short)".

I reckon I should see if it will spin at all by doing this but I have no idea
what switch they are speaking of. What historically fails on these? This is the
first time ever I have had one fail.

Is there a relay for this and, if there is, where is it?

In the Midwest, rust isn't a sign of neglect, it's an inevitability of

it's a very nice ride. A S600 will add another 10K (easy) to that

Of course there is always a lurking W140 diesel (maybe if very lucky

MPG on mine 500SEL range from 16-18 (usa gallon), 21 was highest with

I'll tell you after I trade for it, on Saturday.

The car has 155,000 miles on it and the seats are in excellent condition.
The body's straight and I can't find a sign of rust anywhere. The paint's
faded enough that I believe it to be original.

Re: [MBZ] 1977 450SEL

2005-09-28 Thread Harry
Most of those older Benz's do not require any type of high octane fuel. Higher
octane gas which is mostly required in LEV's or Low Emission Vehicles. Higher
octane say 91 or higher does not burn faster than say 87 or 89 it burns slower
which results in a cleaner burn. Almost all of the pre 90's Benz's run fine on
low octane and don't require anything more than 89 or less

2005-09-28 Thread Dave M.
Say what? I'm with Kleb, as they age, the IP's are almost always low
on fuel delivery, especially off idle - necessitating the ALDA
adjustment (richer). Almost all older, unmolested MB turbo diesels are
dogs (low fuel delivery) that wake up dramatically with a little
tweaking. I never hear of old diesels being too darn fast and blowing
black smoke while frying the tyres, Finnish-style...

I had a 1979 450SEL from 1991 through 1998.

It was a great car and used regular unleaded fuel. Fuel mileage was the
main reason I sold the car. My mpg were usually south of 16mpg. The best
I'd ever seen was on the highway driving was 17 or 18 mpg.

A huge car and very stout of performance. My 116 was my first Mercedes, and
I've owned nothing but Mercedes since then.

Does anything have to be fabricated or purchased, or is the

You probably won't be able to fit a 602 engine into the 201.034 chassis
(it MIGHT fit into a 190E 2.6 - MAYBE) without MAJOR alterations to the
chassis. The 190D 2.5 chassis were stretched up front - different
radiators and so forth - from the earlier cars to fit in the longer
engine. I'm NOT saying it can't be done, but look VERY carefully and see
how things fit into one versus the other. Pay particular attention to
the radiator, AC condenser, fans, fan shroud and AC stuff.

Tom,

Nitske's page on the 450SEL cover 72-80 model years so his fuel consumption
figure of 16 MPG is pretty general. Given that the 72-78 had a 3.07 rear
gear, the 79 had 3.06(?), and the 80 had 2.65:1. Your 77 would have a
performance gear and I would suspect 16 would be hard to average pulling around
 4100
pounds.

The fuel is specified as US: no lead fuel with no mention of octane, which
implies low octane is OK. The 6.9 page, for example, calls for "super" in the
fuel category. US horsepower for the 77 is quoted at an anemic 180 (@4750
rpm) with a compression ration of 8.0:1, which should be very happy on the
cheapest blends. Fuel tank capacity was 25.4 gallons.

Some other specs: 0-60 in 10.8 seconds with a top speed of 127 MPH. the 77
sold new for $24,506 (east cost POE). Of the 59,575 sold in the USA, 10,042
were labeled 77s.

If you buy the car, I would be glad to scan the two pages for your files.

I would NOT suggest buying a car that has had the injection pump

If ALL of the routine maintenance such as valve adjustment, timing
change stretch check, thermostat (suboptimal operating temps from a
partially stuck open thermostat will seriously reduce fuel economy -
especially in stop and go or city driving), etc. has been performed,
then check the injection pump timing and finally test the injectors.
Their spray pattern and injection pressures must be within tolerance and
they must not dribble. If everything seems perfect, then maybe changing
the delivery valve seals will help.

20 mpg in city driving with an OM617.95 is not out of line - perhaps
even QUITE usual - especially if you are buying average #2 diesel fuel
that most dealers sell (the very best fuel that's available will usually
raise economy by 10% or a bit more - but will have little effect if the
engine is not fully warming up).

A 240TD was available in Europe. You would need a head with a pump for the
auto leveling system, a driveshaft and speedo. I believe the differential
ratio is also different.

Hi! What body type and transmission would a '79 300TD
wagon have and would either of these require
substantial modification to use an '82 240D engine?
Thanks!

Yea thats probably doable for me.

tom savage wrote:

Hi everyone,
I've been thinking a bit more about the idea of a St Louis get together,
and I've come up with the following ideas:

Date: I am thinking that perhaps October 22 might be good. It is still
far enough in advance to make arrangements (hopefully), but the weather
should still be decent, with fall colors still in bloom. Our
illustrious leader can likely make the trip all the way from Oklahoma
this weekend, as well. Would this date cause any problems for any
interested parties?

Actvities: The Kemp Auto Museum (http://kempautomuseum.com/) will of
course be the centerpiece of the event. It isn't huge, but we could
easily spend hours there. Afterwards we could stage an impromtu
concours d'oilleak on the museum forecourt. What else we do depends on
the desires of attendees, ie carcentric, familycentric, raucous
hellraisingcentric, etc.

There are many great winding country roads through the wine country of
nearby St Charles county that would make for a nice senic
tour/rallye/inaugural run of the Chesterfield Valley Grand Prix (to be
contested under Formula Diesel rules; SL owners must first sign release
form).

There's also the St Louis Science Center (http://www.slsc.org/) and City
Museum (http://citymuseum.org/) if you're looking for something more
family-oriented (and fun for kids of all ages). And of course there's
this big arch-shaped thing downtown.

St Louis also is home to a great Italian district with many excellent
restaurants (http://www.diningstl.com/TheHill.htm).

The "what do we do" is pretty malleable, depending on how many people
come from out of town, how long you wish to stay, and so on. The date
is fairly flexible, too, if a lot of people have conflicts that weekend.

So please let me know if you're interested, or if you have any thoughts
about what to do, or when to do it. This sounds like fun.

My 1983 300TD with 276 K miles has suffered diminishing fuel economy over
time (more accurately, I have been doing the suffering). Now, I get about 20
mpg in typical stop and go city driving, with the occasional 10 mile
interstate cruise thrown in for good measure. 10 years ago it was more like
24 mpg although this probably involved somewhat more highway driving.

L vs. R has NOTHING to do with where the driver sits!!
To avoid confusion, I always think of L and R as being derived from the
vantage point of ANYONE sitting in the car facing forward, since half the
world drives on the wrong, er right, side of the car... So even a PASSENGER
can determine which is L or R.

On the plus side, I don't need that heater blower any more. On the
minus side, it was my daughter's fault, so we are going to be out a
doo-doo load of money.

Anyone need a parts car around Columbus, OH?

Any suggestions? I've never had to do this before.

The hit started at the FR tire and slid back through the front door. I
suspect the cabin is deformed. Actually, it must be, because the
front glass is broken due to the deformation. The car was not in
cosmetically good enough shape to even think about fixing it, but it
ran solid.

Re: [MBZ] clones?

2005-09-28 Thread Harry
I have to admit I would certainly love to get my hands on a Honda S2000 as a
replacemnt for my Mustang Cobra that I sadly had to sell. The sound of a
screaming engine at 8,000 rpms just boils my blood. Its too bad that a lot of
the Honda, Toyotas and even the others like Kia are starting to look a lot like
each other. Yep, I would say bland is the word here except for Nissan who has
taken a real sporting image over the last few years. I still like the 280Z's of
the 70's and the last few that were made in the 90's.

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-28 Thread Kevin J. Slater
I had almost the same symtoms. I have records from the previous owner but
it doesn't show when the trap was replaced. I had a bad temp sensor in car
(plus other issues) and managed to overheat the engine on the way home one
time. That was enough to start the process of coolant loss. I was only
using the 300TD to go back and forth to the bus stop so I lived with it
for a while, but the clouds of white smoke in the cool mornings were
really getting outrageous and so I went out and found a #17 head. I think
I paid $850 + shipping from TN to PA. And that was my cheapest find and it
took a while to locate. I'd pay attention to what Dave's saying. He may be
overly cautious on this one, but you don't want to have to find a head,
take it from me.
