It's been reported (rather frequently) that the use of Mobil synthetics
will reduce the need for valve adjustment (but I don't know why that
might be). I KNOW it reduces timing chain wear (I've measured that) by
about half and I understand why, but I can't figure out why it would
reduce the need to adjust valves.

As intake valves wear they get tighter - can't be cam follower wear any
way I can imagine!

Lots of cheap early-'80s G-wagens on ebay.de. If >=25 years old, they
no longer need to pass EPA and NHTSA to be imported. Flights to
Europe are cheap---go over there, find a good one, ship it back---it'd
still be cheaper, all told, than a used one that's already here, let
alone a new one.

Three things, really, I would guess -- reduced wear on cam follower and
adjuster nut (also reduced wear on the cam lobe, but that won't affect
clearance), reduced wear on guides (and hence better seating and
reduced wear on seat), and less ash in the combustion chamber since
there is less consumption and less zinc stearate in the oil (I think,
not sure on the last one).

I've not run Mobil 1 in a 61x engine long enough to need to do a valve
adjust yet (will be checking my brother's 300D this weekend or next),
but on the Volvo, only a couple valves were out of spec after 50,000
miles.

A well maintained engine lubricated with good oil that's changed as
required, will not need adjustment very often, but they still need to be
checked before each cold season to insure flawless cold starting. The
process is far from linear and often changes quite suddenly! Once you
have become "one with your car," you may be able to tell that the valves
need adjustment from the sound, but I was never able to count on that
even after 20+ years of trying. Increasing valve clearance will make
them noisier, increase wear (at least a little) and the engine won't run
as well. Tight valves quiets the engine, but results in slow/no cold
starting, poor running when cold and excessive valve wear/damage.

Valves can tighten (usually intakes) with wear (and that prevents cold
starting) and they can also loosen (usually exhausts) and that makes the
engine noisier, but neither of those results are exclusive - so they
really must be checked every 15kmi or so and adjusted if they are out of
specification.

Mercedes To Continue Producing G-Class
Posted on November 11, 2005 at 8:52 AM CST

Despite earlier rumors that Mercedes may be replacing the legendary G-Wagon
with the upcoming GL-Class, DaimlerChrysler has officially announced today
that they will continue producing the G-Class in coming years.

The legendary G-Wagon has remained virtually unchanged in it's design since
1979, except for various safety and technology upgrades.  According to
Dieter Zetsche, head of the Mercedes Car Group, "Mercedes-Benz wrote
automotive history by always ensuring that the G-Class remained state
of-the-art over the past 26 years, and it will continue to offer its
customers the very latest technology in the future.²

Production for the G-Class will remain at the Magna Steyr Plant in Graz,
Austria, where over 185,000 have been produced throughout the years.

Although the G will remain with Magna Steyr, DaimlerChrysler has also
announced today they will be moving E-Class production (which has been with
Magna Steyr since 1996) to the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen from
early 2007.

For more info on the G-Class and E-Class production, you can check out the
full press release below.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Legendary Off-Roader Will Remain Part Of The Mercedes
Product Lineup

Stuttgart/Graz, Nov 11, 2005

DaimlerChrysler will continue to produce its ³classic off-roader² in the
coming years. On behalf of Mercedes-Benz, the company Magna Steyr has
manufactured over 185,000 units of the legendary G-Class in Graz, Austria,
since 1979. The car continues to be very popular among customers, and it has
been part of the Mercedes product lineup for the past 26 years.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4MATIC, which Magna Steyr in Graz has also been
building since 1996, will be manufactured instead at the DaimlerChrysler
plant in Sindelfingen from early 2007. ³By continuing to produce the G-Class
in Graz and manufacturing all E-Class variants at our main plant in
Sindelfingen from 2007, we have found a viable solution for both partner,²
explains Dr. Dieter Zetsche, DaimlerChrysler Board of Management member and
head of the Mercedes Car Group. ³We are delighted that we can continue our
successful and long-standing cooperation with Magna Steyr.²

With its rugged technology and outstanding off-road capabilities, the
G-Class has set standards from the very start. And it is equipped with the
industry¹s most effective drive and driving safety systems, combining
permanent all-wheel drive with the 4ETS electronic traction system and three
differential locks that are activated when needed.

The vehicle¹s striking shape, which has remained nearly unchanged over a
period of almost three decades, has made the ³G² a design classic with cult
status. Together with its legendary ruggedness, the off-roader¹s design has
contributed most to its popularity. ³Mercedes-Benz wrote automotive history
by always ensuring that the G-Class remained state of-the-art over the past
26 years, and it will continue to offer its customers the very latest
technology in the future,² says Zetsche.

Re: [MBZ] OT: For the Jeep freaks, interesting Grand Wagoneer

2005-11-12 Thread Alan Duff
I have a '85 Grand Wagoneer that I've owned for a couple of years. The
problem areas are:

The oil pumps are a known wear out item and are housed in the aluminum
timing cover. Wear results in low oil pressure and the fix usually
requires both to be replaced. Mine went from 15 psi to 60 psi at highway
speeds after replacement. Cost of parts is around $450. Probably a one day
job if no bolts break off.

The carbs are Motorcraft and work ok at highway and offroad. The need to
be rebuilt every couple of years and usually require adjustment in the
spring and fall to run correctly. Good fix is a Holly Avenger carb at
about $400 plus a new intake at $200. A better fix is fuel injection at
$2,000.

The engines tend to overheat due to a marginal cooling system. Best fix is
a Flowkooler water pump at around $200 and a four core aluminum radiator
at $400. Expect the bolts to be frozen in the block and require much time
and assorted breakage to get them out.

The clunk is likely a u-joint. These things have several of them in the
drivetrain and require frequent greasing. Some in the front are almost
impossible to get to and tend to get skipped.

The sending unit in the fuel tank tends to go out and leave the gauge
reading at full so you don't know how much gas you have. This is not a
real problem as you need to stop at every third gas station anyway. I get
about 8 mpg with mine which has the 360 V-8, the six bangers get a little
better mileage.

The rear springs tend to sag on the drivers side where the gas tank is.
Stock complete replacement springs are around $400 and ones with a four
inch lift around $600, plus shipping and those things are heavy. You will
need a torch, Sawsall, BIG hammer and lots of time to get the bolts
holding the springs out. They will have rusted in the metal lining of the
bushing. The one holding the front of the rear spring on the drivers side
goes through a hole in the frame to a nut clipped on the backside. This
will break and require removal of the skid plate and gas tank to replace.
This probably needs to be done anyway as the skid plate tends to trap mud
and rust out so it will need replaced. If there is any rust on the frame
you don't want it.

The good points are the things will go anywhere offroad while hauling
serveral adults and lots of gear.

There were 3 190Ds brought officially to the US.

There was the 201.122 190D 2.2 brought to the US in '84-'85. 72 HP, 0-62
mph ~19 sec (that's 5+ sec faster than a 240D) highway mpg ~36-37 (more
economical than a 240D too). VERY nice car - even nicer with a 5 speed
that makes EVERYTHING about it nicer.

There was the 201.126 190D 2.5 brought to the US from '86-'89. 90 hp,
0-62 mph ~ 15 sec (faster than an '81-'85 300SD). Highway economy ~33-34
mpg. A 5 speed was available that also made everything else better, but
VERY few of them were imported (my guess is no more than a few hundred).

Finally there was the 201.128 190D 2.5 turbo 123 hp (119 in Calif). Only
imported to the US in '87 and fewer than 1400 were brought over. 0-62
~11 sec. Only available as an automatic. Really a nice car - matched
PERFECTLY with the automatic transmission. I love 5 speeds (owned 3 of
'em), but the 190D 2.5t really is PERFECT with an automatic.

There was a European 201.122 190D 2.0 (never officially brought to the
US) that was manufactured from '83 thru the early '90s. ~70 SAE hp and a
little less torque than the 2.2 version sold in the US. Nice VERY
economical car. I've done well over 40 mph on the highway with the 5
speed I own (got 48 mpg once, but 42-43 much more usual and can drop
below 40 with the AC cranking full blast or in the winter with winter
fuel). Acceleration is a little slow - 18-19 sec to 62 mph - still MUCH
faster and more economical than a 240D and much less work to maintain
(no valves to adjust).

Timing chain life of OM60x engines is routinely almost double what it is
on OM61x engines using regular oil and about double that again using
Mobil 1. With just a little care, the timing chain should last the life
of the engine TWICE!

After reading the ad I would not bid without an in person inspection. Why
do they say the oil pressure sending unit needs replaced? Is this a typical
AMC 360 with a bad oil pump? Does it have oil pressure? The skip they
mention is probably carb related. No fun to rebuild or work on at all with
all the BS in the way. The clunk is probably the T-case chain and will
probably be good for a long time but, being a Benz owner, I can see you
wanting to fix every little thing to make it right and spending a fortune on
a vehicle that may never be right.

that they are not as easy to shoplift? On this I must scream to the

Re: [MBZ] 1992 Olds 98

2005-11-12 Thread Brian Chase
Yes, those 440s tend to pull like a freight train too, right from idle.
Wasn't going to mention it, but with all the posts regarding old American
steel, I'm going to throw out there that I have pretty much decided to sell
my '68 Coronet 500 two door coupe.

She was my first car - had 'er since I was 16 (c. 20 years). Arizona car.
The 500 was a luxury option, but I turned it into a street machine. Have the
original trim.

Replace the original 383 with a 440 which I had completely rebuilt (forged
pistons, roller rockers, stellite valve seats, etc. etc. Rebuilt tranny and
suspension, etc. Front disc.

Won't go into too much detail, I know it's way Off Topic. Would be seeking
around $10k - otherwise may just keep 'er in the family.

Although I liked the big Buicks I was more partial to the late 60's early
70's Chryslers. My ideal pimpmobile was a 69 Chrysler Imperial my
grandfather had. Nothing but yards of chrome, leather and a big block 440
that sounded like a freight train when you floored it

Dieselers,

While I'm not a movie guy, I've seen a couple traliers for the new Jennifer
Anniston movie "Deralied" and they both had shots of what appeared to be a
late '80s 300SD. Actually, it's probably not a diesel - not sure the klatta
is so much cut out for stunt work, but at any rate, thought it was
interesting.

This is the 123 HP 5 cylinder TURBO diesel (same engine found in the

Disregarding the gearing possibilities-- the 190D should be faster --

123 chassis 240D - 3250 Lb and 67 HP
201 chasis 190D - 2700 LB and 72 HP

240D - 48.5 Lb/HP

The 190D was imported from '84 thru '86 best that I can tell.

contact your local police
i am thinking this car might be a replate ( a car who's vehicle
identification number was taken off of a different auto ) usually all
departments
have an auto squad, that is a unit that has contact with the manufacturer not
just the dealers they have special knowledge in the hidden vin locations and
will usually do a search for members of the public if the car is in stolen

Re: [MBZ] For G-Wagon Lovers

wow, those things look cool when set up like that (narrow tires, roof rack),
it's a shame to see them sitting on 25" chrome rims in compton.

Re: [MBZ] OK Don's phat new ride

2005-11-12 Thread OK Don
I replaced the engine mounts today (thanks Rusty) - it's a MUCH nicer
ride with the engine off the frame! The left side was completely
collapsed.
The tranny mount is scheduled for tomorrow since it's the same age.
While I'm there, I'd like to adjust the shifts a bit. They're soft,
almost to the point of flaring, but not quite.
I assume this is done at the vacuum modulator?

You turn something one way or the other to adjust this?

What do you turn, and which way for harder?

TIA,

Yup - those same democrats here in Okie land made the meth stock -cold
medicines - "behind the counter" drugs. The police seem to think it
has at least made a dent in the number of meth labs here.

I drove a 2CV to school as a kid. Great mileage but
not good in snow because of low clearance and the pan
below the engine would ride up over the snow and leave
the wheels high and dry. But a couple kids could lift
the car up and move it. The door windows were hinged
and opened by flipping them up. If you closed the
door shut by pulling on the window opening, the window
would slam shut on your fingers and darn near break
them!

I flipped through a copy of the Canadian Forces magazine at the
bookstore a couple months back and there was a letter to the editor
from a soldier in the camp at Kabul. He expressed discontent at some
of the mechanical issues with their new G-Wagons. I didn't see exactly
what he was complaining about though.

Of course, according to the Washington State Republicans, just living
in
an apartment building with a name that sounds vaguely like it might be

if you live in a Democratic-leaning area, of course. Also, if you're a
live-in manager at a storage facility in a Democratic district,
Republicans don't think you should get to vote.
