Which club is this? I moved to Minneapolis about a year ago and haven't

Interesting. I kinda put Slum Village on their own.

I have some stuff I still have to play that I got in Detroit but that dark
style seems to be associated with Eminem, D12, Proof and Dogmatic and
Sicknotes and some others, and they seem partial to rock too. I didn't care
for it at first but Em's work is getting more boom to it. I hate that tinny
synth sound in some gangsta rap, I dig the booming bass, powerful beats,
myself.

Incidentally Xzibit grew up in Detroit and left at 10.

Snoop Dogg's dad is from Detroit.

Betcha didn't know that.

Re: (313) Listmember's sites

2002-11-13 Thread Eric Scuccimarra
Most cable modems have dynamic IPs but for all intents and purposes the IPs
are static. When I had cable a few years back the IP address didn't change
for the entire 2 years.

If you want to check your IP address I have a page that does that at
www.skooch.com/IPFinder.cfm

DSL on the other hand is truly dynamic. Even if you leave the machine on 24
hours a day it sometimes will disconnect from the server and reconnect with
a new IP.

Just my experiences...

It's a philosophy of life that started in Japan... Here are the basic
tennets:

Consume organically and locally-grown foods in season as they become
available, or foods that will store without artificial preservation or
refrigeration. Alternatively, eat foods grown in the same latitude.

Consume primarily cooked whole grains, and recipes made from whole
grains, plus cooked vegetables, secondarily in quantity, adjusting
proportions and preparation methods according to activity, climate and
seasonal fluctuations of temperature and humidity.

Use solar-evaporated sea water salts in preparation of foods, as well as
traditionally-aged miso and shoyu, umeboshi and seaweeds. Drink undyed,
3-year old roasted twig tea (kukicha) as preferred beverage.

Use unrefined, cold-pressed seed oils sparingly, made from
organically-grown seeds, like sesame, corn, safflower, sunflower,
flaxseed, etc.

Use roasted seeds and nuts, fruit, salads and fish occasionally as
desired, in smaller quantities, as provided in season.

Use beans and bean products frequently, as primary sources of protein,
along with whole grain and vegetable dishes.

Avoid all foods and beverages containing refined sweeteners, chemical
dyes, synthetic flavorings or seasonings, refined oils, chemical
preservatives, or made from foods grown with chemical insecticides,
herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, or produced by
bio-engineering or grown under hot-house conditions.

Avoid foods grown in, and shipped from, warmer latitudes.

Avoid "soft" (carbonated, sweetened) beverages, canned goods, alcoholic
beverages, artificial sweeteners or products containing these
ingredients.

Chew each mouthful thoroughly before swallowing.

So there is this new club in Mpls I went to check out because Tuesdays are
supposed to be techno (remember we have very few that more than just
meatmarket sports bars) and at first I thought it could be decent but soon
realized all the things that were wrong with it.

The good things:

It's big and very open
The bass hits you when you walk in the door (though they could use more)
the layout is interesting (this is both good and bad)
there is a second floor that overlooks the dancefloor
decent dancefloor light system
nice big windows up front
central downtown location - on busline and right next to new light rail
system being built - more parking available than any other club in the city
$5 to get in

The bad:

First of all - it's a converted McDonald's restaurant (I swear I went home
with the smell of cigarettes and french fries in my clothes).
They've left the original stone tile floor for the entire place - including
the dance floor.
No defined dance space - meaning you walk right into this big open space as
soon as you walk into the building.
Very cold atmosphere - all the stone tile on walls and floor.
Brass rails.
green plants.
way too bright - you can see people all the way across the room - no dark
corners
only one place to lounge - in a corner upstairs and only enough for 2,
maybe 3 people
2 pool tables with those billiard room lamps (green shades and more brass)

the ugly:
the Dj booth was under the stairs around the corner from the dancefloor -
impossible to monitor what is going on
trance and progressive house and no techno - one decent house tune the
entire night

I'm curious about places that make it to your personal list of good or bad
clubs - not the music so much but the actual physical space
what is it about the club?

2002-11-13 Thread - BT -

I agree with the Venue in Edinburgh - I have only been through a couple of
times for Pure when it used to be there. I liked the way they opened the
door at the top of the stairs to let some air in but didnt let you hang
about there for obvious reasons.

Also, when Pure used to do their extravaganzas in the Barrowland in Glasgow
(particularly the new years nights). I remember one night, I think it was
the last one they did and there were about 100 people in a place with about
3000 capacity and Carl Craig was playing a live set???

But my favourite has to be Club 69 in Paisley - the Rub-A-Dub crew always
put on a good night, good people, good atmosphere and no hassle. Although it
sometimes gets a wee bit hit (like the last UR night there)

And the Sub Club in Glasgow - which should be reopening in the next month or
so after burning down 3 years ago. I cant wait to see what its like. Hope
they havnt ruined it.

Cheers
BT

would that be defined as a McClub then ?
When you requested a tune did the DJ ask if you wanted fries
with it ?

hehe sorry the concept of a McD's turned club is just too funny :]

back on topic err fave clubs:

Im yet to find somewhere however that satisfies all my
comfort requirements in terms of space, chill out areas,
hassle free policy etc

i think with a couple of exceptions (that don't readily come to mind) my
taste in club design is a lot like my fashion taste. two types entice me:

1. very spare. no glaring ads. open space. cubes to dance on top of,
or sit on. hardwood floors. small juice bar. high ceilings. clean.

the club that really nailed this down for me was the music institute. the
johanson gallery is really barebones too.

Agreed! They have a really sound music policy and respect what their dj
guests want to play rather than being dictatorial, which always means fun
for everyone and a better vibe. Recent nights with Carl Craig, Francois K
and the Three Chairs night, to name just some.
Also, no lights on the dance floor. So it's dark.. but not
too dingey.

Re: (313) nightclubs - the good, the bad, the ugly

2002-11-13 Thread Tristan Watkins
For (I think) pretty obvious reasons, most of the best venues tend to be
overun with a clientelle that makes them less desirable to go to. But, if
we're just talking about the space itself, these are 4 of my favorites (3
big, one small):

The Limelight in NYC: I love the maze-like effect as you wander through the
back, and the main dancefloor is magnificent. It's just a beautiful space.
Sound there can be iffy at times, but generally I enjoy it.

Nation (former home of Buzz) in DC: The venue is so sick. The clientelle and
the music was often lacking. The front room, where they normally play drum
'n bass, has bars on either end with a circular DJ booth in the middle,
which works so well for drum 'n bass. I often took refuge here when the main
room was a dissapointment. The outdoor deck would usually feature house, or
something less mainstream (in DC anyway) than progtrance/dnb. I loved to
spend time out there in the Summer, especially when I first arrived in DC,
with the view of the capitol building, a good dancefloor vibe and amazing
weather. You have to love listening to house outdoors at night. The main
room is really impressive. I always thought the sound with a bit too
ecstacy-tweaked-crisp for me, and there were very few DJs I wanted to see in
there, and those I did want to see often dissapointed. Also, when the floor
is packed with drooling kids every weekend, you tend to find a different
space. But, it's impressive for the good design, and with a slightly
different EQing it would sound great in there.

The End in London: This sound system is so sick. I know some people who
don't like it but I think it depends who you see spinning on it, b/c they
have separate PA settings for all the regular performers. I like the setup
of the entire club. Clearly there are sometimes issues with the crowds
there, but the space itself rocks, purely because of the focus on the DJ and
the sound quality.

The Blue Room in DC: Pure class. It's small, lots of wood every where. Free
entry. Great selection of beer and some good food. Nice outdoor deck. Both
floors are smooshed full of people whenever they're open and eveyone is
always having a great time. The sound downstairs sucks. The sound upstairs
is too loud for the space. None of it matters because the people, the beauty
of the space, the beverages and the music always make it a great experience.
I would go there on my own a lot this Summer and wound up meeting tons of
people every time I went because I knew whoever I met at the Blue Room would
be cool. It's the right spot in the right part of DC, with the right music
to attract the best people.

You wouldn't think it to look at the first three, but I much prefer small
clubs.

2002-11-13 Thread Lester Kenyatta Spence
i think with a couple of exceptions (that don't readily come to mind) my
taste in club design is a lot like my fashion taste. two types entice me:

1. very spare. no glaring ads. open space. cubes to dance on top of,
or sit on. hardwood floors. small juice bar. high ceilings. clean.

the club that really nailed this down for me was the music institute. the
johanson gallery is really barebones too.

2. lush. plush lounging area with couches, and loveseats. paintings
adorning the walls. colored lights to denote a warm tone. lots of clingy
fabric.

there was a coffee bar in ann arbor that was used for parties--Not Just
Another Cafe i think. gorgeous. there's an old gothic church now club
here in st. louis called THE KASTLE that tries to mix both 1 and 2 to
success.

The Venue in Edinburgh - its dark, its sweaty, the bogs are
useless, the sound systenm is some random stacks of speakers
but what more could you ask of a techno club :) somehow the
fact that its the only place in edinburgh to see the likes of
jeff mills, dave clarke, dj funk, derrick may, mark farina
etc means that its pretty rocking and somehow the mankiness
kind of suits the tunes!

Agreed, I did like the venue. Another place I liked in Edinburgh was la
belle angel. Small with a hefty sound - sweat ridden stone walls. Sounds
bad but you couldn't beat the atmosphere on some nights.
Something about clubs there, I think it's the fact they're all in old
buildings.

2002-11-13 Thread Neil Wallace

Yeah I really like venues like the venue & studio 24 in edinburgh - dark
and dingy - it means that most of the people are there to listen to the
music rather than be seen so you can avoid the trendy poseur set. And
while the PA in both these venues is nothing special its normally loud
enough to do the business.
I wouldn't go to a club with a dress code as a point of principle (even
if I fitted in with the code)

(313) nightclubs - the good, the bad, the ugly

2002-11-13 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

James is right. I remember, that was at the end of my set, when Kenny was
showing me how to use the effects box at Centro Fly... ;)

I love that track, though. Its my favorite Rob Hood song. I should dig it
out again.

Its too bad the realaudio transfer was all wacky, it gets a bit distracting.
Plus, my mixing got all sloppy at the end of that set... ;p

I don't know if I'd expect cross over there though. The Black east coast,
for reasons I don't completely understand, has always looked to hiphop as
its dance music of choice. Not house (exception perhaps being the
hip-house craze), not techno. Much more diversity in spots like detroit
and chicago, largely because they'd created musics of their own that were
played alongside of hiphop.

More precisely, that sample is from Tracks on the Rocks vol. 2, which was
credited to Bangalter alone, not with his Daft Punk partner, Guy Manuel De
Homem-Christo. I also heard a rumor that as a result of sampling the tune,
Bangalter requested Jay Dee's assistance on a future work, rather than
imposing a lawsuit for royalties.

jay dee also used a daft punk sample on 'raise it up' from 'fantastic volume
2'. the story behind this was, that he picked up a white label copy of that
album, and figured it was some obscure techno band, so people probably would
never find out where the sample came from.
daft punk heard 'raise it up', and immediately spotted the sample. jay dee
was then asked for a remix of one of their songs.

RE: (313) ...enough eminem, how about some more vegan food?

2002-11-13 Thread Eric Scuccimarra

Someone else just asked me ths question and here is my reply:

Macrobiotic is between vegan and raw foods. It's more of an approach to
what you eat than an actual diet. Most macrobiotic restaurants have raw
food and vegan food. Macrobiotic means not eating anything processed or
with additives, everything is organic, etc.

I'm actually not completely sure what it means, myself. Everyone seems to
have a different definition. It seems to involve both eating organic food,
holistic medicine and a certain lifestyle.

I just know that I like the restaurants that call themselves macrobiotic.

Definitely not pie or mash or fish or chips.

From: Ian Dinsmor:

I was working the other night, and in walks Jay Dee, only to ask for

Behold, the paths of hip hop and "techno" cross in ways.

as mentioned allready, there was a sample of that album used on the album
'trinity'. the sample was even mentioned on the sleeve.

jay dee also used a daft punk sample on 'raise it up' from 'fantastic volume

album, and figured it was some obscure techno band, so people probably would
never find out where the sample came from.
daft punk heard 'raise it up', and immediately spotted the sample. jay dee
was then asked for a remix of one of their songs.

ánd on 'trinity' there's another song that sounds A LOT like it's based on a
sample from 'sharivari'.

anyone know how those shake hip-hop tracks are received within the hip-hop
community? or that album on sublime, or those hipnotech releases?

Agreed. The place next door is called Red Bamboo, I think, and is vegan
soul food.

VP2 is in the west village, by the 3rd st. train stop.

I don't think so as the pc version doesn't run in windows AFAIK but in
some sort of linux (which will be an i386 build and so wont work on a

Not so. FS 1.0 installs itself into a ~300MB c:\finalscratch\fsrun.img
which it then mounts as the root using the loopback driver from initrd.
It's just an image file, not it's own partition.

As for getting it to work on the mac, it's extremely unlikely it'd ever
work unless they released a mac version, which would be fairly easy for
them to do (assumming that the final scratch and recordboxing apps
themselves are fairly portable across architechtures).

i wouldn't hold my breath, though.

RE: (313) Hip Hop and Techno (was 8-Mile)

2002-11-13 Thread Robert Taylor
Bit late in the day to throw in my 2 cents, but the way I understand it is
this: Rave is a term rarely in use these days in the UK, and then it is
usually just used as a verb, ie to go raving. Its use as a noun to describe
the large-scale semi-legal/illegal outdoor events that occurred in the late
80s/early 90s has largely dropped out of use in England because these events
don't really happen anymore (thanks to the Criminal Justice Bill), except as
large corporate sponsored events. It was also used to describe the music
played at some of these events, a sound that diversified into jungle and
happy hardcore. I think many people also used it to describe the more
commercial music that was coming out - tunes like Smart Es' Sesam-E Street
and Prodigy's Charly (incidentally Mills dropped this in his recent set at
The End in London). I think rave is now seen primarily as an embarrassing
word that parents and authority figures use to decribe something that the
kids get up to.
Now that large scale raves are happening in the US, it seems that the word
has had something of a renaissance, but only in the US.

I will have to agree with robin here and I'm from the US. I read this
article in an old DJ Magazine that talked about "The Summer of Love"
and there was a part where someone would say (I'm paraphrasing here)
"you gonna rave? or have you raved yet?" which meant taking a hit of e
and going to a party and "rave" like mad. Indeed the Acid House and
Rave are one of the same. \ I suggest doing some research at the mag's
website.

I'd say that a Detroit style of hip hop has been around for a minute, not
necessarily mainstream though. Tainted by SV has probably made the biggest
splash on the airwaves, out of the stuff I'd say is D flavored. De La Soul's
Stakes Is High (produced by Jay Dee) enjoyed a tiny bit of radio play. D
flavor you ask?... Jazzy. Funky. Analog. Pretty Minimal. Not a lot of reverb
& what not. Plump, abbreviated kick drums. Exaggerated snares & claps sharp
enough to take your head off. Washy, filtered samples. Rhodes, lots of
Rhodes. Large & lively staccato basslines. Swinging, free flowing scat-like
vocals. Basically picking up where A Tribe Called Quest left off. I think of
Dabrye, Dwele, Wajeed, Lacksadaisycal, Jay, Subterraneous, SV, my buddies
greenSKY & Jazz, :brownstudy (yours truly!), and a some others I can't think
of for some annoying reason (sleep deprivation perhaps?). There's a couple
of other Detroit hip hop flavours running around, but they aren't as
pervasive within the community - and in my opinion they suck. The
aforementioned brand of head is open to some of the more adventurous
"techno" stuff (akin to their own aesthetic) - i.e., Herbert, Domu, Bjork,
Sutekh, blah, blah, blah... I must admit that you're less like likely to
find a head into more traditional techno fare like, ummm, something from the
Belleville three or UR maybe. Okay, I really should got to sleep now. Boom

Yeah. They bit Daft Punk's 'Veridis Quo' (from the 2nd album) and I'm pretty
sure they swiped something else pretty house/techno too. Can't recall at the

Re: (313) Hip Hop and Techno (was 8-Mile)

2002-11-13 Thread James Bucknell
there isn't much crossover in the birthplace of hip hop in the south
bronx/upper manhattan. when i'd go to the police athletics league gym on
118st and manhattan ave. any house, electro or techno cds i put on promptly
got thrown off and replaced by hot 97 (bringing you blazin hip hop). i
declined to dj at our block party because it was patently obvious that
nobody was interested in hearing anything but hip hop (and the electric
slide, of course). but block parties are a genre of their own.
