Fresh 12 of Detroit inspired hip-hop beats
I have a new 12 out, under a new alias Pavemental, full of synth heavy instrumental hiphop, with a lot of Detroit techno influence. The opening track is a collaboration with a multitalented singer Monika Horvat. Should be available in all better record stores, or directly from my Bandcamp: https://octex.bandcamp.com/album/streeteepy Jernej www.pavemental.com / www.octex.si
my new music video
Wanted to share my new music video, for track Octex - Gait. Spent some time working on this, syncing all the lights to music sequences... Take a night ride through the city, where street lights reflect the ever shifting music sequences. https://vimeo.com/100096544 Jernej www.octex.si
(313) Chilli Space 10 compilation 2x12
A bit of shameless promotion. Though it's not directly Detroit related, there's a strong Detroit influence present in a lot of the music. I'm present on this compilation under my own as Octex and as part of Ago Tela. Chilli Space 10 is a compilation of the freshest sub-alpine electronic music from Slovenia. After 12 years and 9 CD-only releases, the tenth installment has finally found its way onto vinyl! The double LP album contains stylistically diverse music from Slovenia's electronic music underground. The compilation features exclusive tracks by artists such as Ago Tela, Octex, iTurk, Electrosaurus and others. A must for lovers of deep dubbed-out electronic music! Released today, 28th of February, distributed by Triple Vision http://distribution.triplevision.nl/release/10LP1/ Jernej www.octex.si

(313) my new album
A bit of self promotion for my new album, not really detroit techno, but it's a big influence on me :) Long awaited new album from Jernej Marusic aka Octex sees him exploring his collection of field recordings and immersing them in his soundscapes. While the recordings themselves sometimes get processed and effected to the edge of recognition, their storytelling and emotional content are used as a basis for all overlaying compositions. The result is an even deeper development of his previous dub experiments, avoiding precise classification, laying somewhere in between dub-techno, dub-step, ambient, IDM, dub... http://www.rx-tx.org/?n=3id=16 http://www.discogs.com/Octex-E...tory/release/2260167 1 Stadtmitte Jam (U2-U6) 2 Zionskirche Dub (Oh Jah) feat. King B-fine 3 Off-Piste (Mont Gelé) 4 Flying Home (...On My Mind) 5 Midnight Traffic 6 By The Port 7 Frozen Downstream 8 Melting Ice (Vallee Blanche) 9 Tunnel Draft You can listen and buy it directly from me on Bandcamp http://octex.bandcamp.com/ Jernej www.octex.si
(313) some improvised techno
Last year me and two friends of mine started a band Ago Tela for improvised electronic music. The concept is to have no pre prepared sequences or anything, just total free improvisation that can take us anywhere from abstract ambient soundscapes to dancy 4/4 techno. Also not limited to electronic instuments... We were lucky that our first official gig was opening for Moritz von Oswald trio, when they played here in Ljubljana last autumn. Here's a recording of a recent studio session, that came out more on the techno side, appropriate for this list :) http://soundcloud.com/agotela/session07022010 Jernej www.octex.si

This is first sucesful recording of my live set in a long long time, finally breaking the curse of failed recordings... It's more on the abstract side, but gets into some 4/4 dubish techno in the middle. http://www.octex.si/audio/octex-live-flussi-280809.mp3 There's also a short clip on YouTube where you can see the visuals,a s this was an audio/video set. Re: (313) New Moritz LP - brief report
I've been listening to this quit a lot in last week and find it to be one of the best records to come out recently. Though it's different from the stuff that Moritz did with Ernestus (and the sound isn't as nice and warm as Rhythm Sound tracks), it almost sounds closer to Vladislav Delay's work which I love as well. I find it especially interesting since for last half a year we're having weekly jam sessions with some friends of mine, and I get a bit similar feel listening to this in the way things spontaneously evolve and build up... Jernej www.octex.si Jacob Arnold wrote: I disagree, I really like it, but it doesn't work well for iPod listening. There are some weird things going on with the bass that are only revealed with a large system. I'm a long-time IDM fan, though, so maybe I'm more receptive to abstract noodling. In any case, here's my complete review: http://www.gridface.com/reviews/vertical_ascent.html Cheers, Jacob On Jul 4, 2009, at 1:23 PM, Tristan Watkins wrote: I blogged up this review the other day: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk/?p=634 ... For those who haven’t kept up, the Moritz von Ozwald Trio is a collaboration between Moritz von Ozwald, Max Loderbauer of Sun Electric and Sasu Ripatti AKA Luomo/Vladislav Delay. They’ve played live a few times, garnering much wider interest than you’d expect from one-off local gigs, unfortunately brought further in to the spotlight by Moritz Von Oswald’s recent rumoured stroke, just before the trio were due to play at last year’s DEAF. The Trio’s long-awaited first release, Vertical Ascent, is now available for download for £4 from the Honest Jon’s website. There are physical media available for purchase in most vinyl/CD purveyors as well. I’ve only had the time to listen to it twice today, and my thoughts are mixed. On one hand, this could never be as good as it looks on paper. On the other hand, the end result is not entriely what I would have expected. It’s more percussive than I anticipated. It’s also very composed, with longer tracks that vary considerably and last quite some time. This isn’t that surprising given recent work like von Ozwald’s remixes of Auricle/Bio/On and Watamu Beach. Unfortunately, like those remixes, I feel that they promise more than they deliver. There are elements that distinguish it from these recent remixes, and they are welcome, but the end result initially feels the same. The tracks never really seem to arrive. It’s all ascent, stopping shot of the suggested apex. There’s plenty here to be excited about, but based on first impressions, this isn’t likely to be getting much play in 2010 or beyond. The third and fourth tracks on Vertical Ascent may prove to be exceptions to that critique with repeated listens, but I’m not holding my breath based on my lack of continued enthusiasm for his recent (re)work. ... I've since listened a couple of times more and feel the same. This isn't to say that it doesn't build nicely, it's just that it feels like it should be going somewhere but the tracks just sort of stop. Re: (313) Porter Ricks Biokinetics CD
I've modified my metal boxes (after my M CD cracked in half) by sticking the plastic from a normal jewlcase inside. After my M CD cracked, I wrote an email to Hardwax, that they should do something about the desing, and they sent me a new copy for free :) Jernej www.octex.si theREALmxyzptlk wrote: That could well be the case, but I burned cdrs from my copies right after I got them and played those, especially when traveling. When I heard people had cracked discs, I checked my own and three of them were cracked. None of them were even opened more than a few times. Chain Reaction figured it out and moved to the uglier 'soft covers' eventually. And I can't find a few of the CDs I have sitting in stacks of slimlines. The notion of a CD banging around on bare metal as packaging always seemed just this side of the legendary Durutti Column LP that used sandpaper for the jacket. Interesting aesthetically, but a tad shy on the function meter (unless you hate Vini Reilly) jeff Not that it's either here nor there, but I don't think that at normal temps, the difference between the expansion rate of stamp metal and whatever plastic they make CDs from differs that much. I think it's as much the fact that a plastic CD case's spindle-holder is made of plastic that bows in when you push on the CD, then pops back out so that a little lip on each tine of the spindle-thingie keeps the CD in place. There is little or no outward force on the hole in the CD.

(313) New DJ set
I've managed to record my DJ set last friday, at the opening party of Festival pomladi (Spring Festival) at Club K4 in Ljubljana: www.octex.si/audio/[EMAIL PROTECTED] It's a diverse set, from dub to moodymann and aphex twin... But it ranges from crystal clear, highly structured arrangements which (for me) seem to put the intelligence back into 'IDM', to seriously browned-out, blatantly toking delay-fests. I've been looking at this one as well. Can you describe a bit more, how do the faders feel, an if they have only 127 steps of resolution or can they do 1024 (like the Mackie Control)? I already have ReMote25 and Doepfer PocketDial for general controll and playing live, but I'm searching for a controller with good 100mm high resolution faders for studio work. Jernej www.soundoflj.com/octex I just put my hands on this: http://www.behringer.com/BCF2000/index.cfm?lang=ENG and must admit it puts Ableton Live into new perspective. The motorfaders are so-so but i.e. the knobs have got pushbutton functionality, are configurable 4x via groups, it's easy to setup the controller to send different values, it's got different led modes for simple values, panning etcetc. And for ~230 $ it's a real bargain. so to what extent is soulseek having an influence (for better or worse) on the move from distribution of underground music on vinyl to distribution of the music via other means (ie. mp3)? A lot of labels have seen a decreas of sales due to p2p networks. And since a lot of small labels were already runing on sales that barely coverd the pressing costs, and maybe made them some money, now this decreas has pushed them over the treshold, and they are now only loosing money.

RE: (313) was groovetech now itunes
If artists/labels start selling music online by themselves, on their one web page, how are you going to find it? It would work for establish artists/labels, because people would be searching for their music, but lets say someone totally new appears. He set's up a web page, puts his music online, and nothing happens. It's the same as if he would record CDRs, go in front of his house and sell them there (ok, a bit easier to get to him over internet :), but you get the picture. Like it or not, there will always be some middle man. I would guess that the day isnt too far off when you see artists/labels selling their output direct to consumers online using a similar business plan, especially given the advent of technologies like final scratch. yes, there is somethng to be said for a slab of vinyl but the overheads and prfofit margins for establishing and operating a direct-dowload label would have to be better than for a traditional label I would think, even if only slightly, which still puts more money in the pocket of the artist/label owner. personally, I know I much prefer being able to listen to the tracks on line from a 12 or LP and purchase only the ones I want at a buck a pop (see the poker flat web site) vice dropping $10 - $20 bucks for the actual release in a retail outlet for the other tracks I didn¹t want
RE: (313)ableton/finalscratch?
1. Ableton and Final Scratch can be used at the same time on the same computer? I was able to run Ableton an Traktor at once, and since FS now runs in special version of traktor it should be possible. 2. Does Ableton allow you to record midi information on the fly? i.e. live keyboards that can be played and looped at the same time. No. There's version 3 coming out soon, and maybe it will add midi support. Jernej www.soundoflj.com/octex

You're kidding right? A coincidence? Everything in that string bit is in Jaguar -even how the notes waver before the descending notes come in. This more than sounds a lot like it - the strings in Jaguar clearly is a sample of that track with maybe a tempo change (and maybe extra accompaniment over and under to fatten up the sound). Or, it was reperformed by Rolando using the same keyboard practically note for note - would be too many coincidences to be a coincidence if you know what I mean. Well from listening to this strings for a couple of times, I can tell that at the beginning they start the same as jaguar but than it gets different really quickly. Than at another point there's another part that sounds the same as jaguar strings for a bit longer but than gets different again. So Rolando probably did get inspiration from this track, but even if he did he changed the strings quite allot beyond those couple starting notes, so he deffinitely didn't sampel them. Also that note waver is quite generic and I've heard it, or really simialar, used in many different melodies (I think I've also heard it in a couple of old movie soundtracks). I've heard him 2 months ago. Really boring hard techno (schranz), and his mixing was also boring. Technically able, but there was no real funk to it. I like a bit of hard techno but he completely turned me off. RE: (313) Mills and hawtin at movement (private replies)
I agree, if a record is good why stop playing it. I get more annoyed with DJs who only play the latest records (and there's a lot of them), even if there hasn't been any really good records coming out at that time. Good record is a good record no meter how old is it or how often you hear it. As I said yesterday, you are almost guaranteed to hear Step To Enchantment, The Bells, Strings Of Life, Alarms etc etc in every Mills set - the crux of this is whether you think this is a good thing or not. IMO they are all good records so fair play to him for playing them, though he has failed to inspire on occasion in previous years because it was getting a tad predictable - he has seemed to have redeemed himself recently by surprising us with snippets of disco, house and non-Detroit techno amongst his u sual fare. No-one ever criticised Frank Sinatra for singing the same old standards over and over again cos that's what people wanted to hear, and it is the same with Mills to a certain degree - people still whoop and cheer whenever The Bells is played, so why should he stop playing those old chestnuts?

RE: (313) Show up or I'll kill you.
I've heard Fehlmann couple of months ago when I was playing in Berlin. His live set was just as you described. Great music all tracks from his Visions Of Blah album, but don't know how much of it was really live. He did use Ableton, and Peavey fader box, so at least it look's like he was setting the levels for separate tracks. But nonetheless I would still go to see him again if he was playing some place near. I've also heard Jelinek one evening later, and he was amazing. All music blended beautifully together, unlike fehlmann where you could hear where one track ended and another one started. I think he was playing mostly new unreleased material, some really beautiful music. And he had someone with him who was providing some great visuals. Love the music, but an inspired live set it was not. If you go in expecting as much I imagine it could be quite enjoyable. RE: (313) Re: techno
I definitely hear a 'tek' edge to that music even though it's very unpopular on the 313-list. You can also hear this production quality in the more refined Detroit techno that came out in the mid 90's like Minimal Nation, Waveform Transmissions Vol.1, or Infinity - Game One. To me it's more important what the music is like, than if the production is crystal clear. I also wouldn't consider drumcode releases as marvel of production anyway, they are just over compressed. Listen to something like Carl Craig's More Songs about Food And Revolutionary Art, there's a record that has great production and great music, or is that also not suppose to be techno anymore? One way for doing live PAs would be to get a bunch of musicians playing live keyboards... and you would be behind the mixer working the effects, and kind of conducting them when to play something... If you are alone it's not physically possible to really play everything live. When I saw mad Professor live, it was something similar. He had a band playing on the stage, and he was playing the mixer and effects. Jernej www.soundoflj.com/octex -Original Message- From: Jayson B. Carl Craig played some live keys when I saw his live PA, I think it was as Paperclip People. and i found everytime he touched the keys i got bored. the thing is, playing full 'live' or not, when you're playing the keyboard you're also assuring the crowd that you're *not* tweaking the bass, dropping the cymbal line, bringing in a synth solo, or sliding up a string line an octave. whether or not you're doing that i don't think is the point: making the crowd think you are *is*, and when you're playing a keyboard you are assuring them that you're not. _ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. RE: (313) Los hermanos/trancey/Detroit techno...
Don't forget the unfunky tr*nce bass lines. I don't know if I ever heard a tr*nce track that didn't have either one bass not between each kick drum (pk pow pk pow...), or an arpaggiated 3 note bass line that goes tadadam tadadam I've challenged some people I know who play tr*nce to name me one track with different bass line, and they we're unable to :) I'm talking of modern tr*nce, as there seamed to be more diversity in what was classified as tr*nce pre 95 or something. That's definitely true - I can't remember if it was Eddie Fowlkes or Kevin Saunderson who said the hardness in techno comes from funk, but I've always seen funk as the main differentiator between Detroit techno and the trance sound. What makes trance unfunky? I think that a large amount of it comes down to the drum programming. Trance producers, I can imagine, must glue over the shuffle button on their drum machines so that it can never be turned on. Also, you can imagine that if a trance producer does anything with the hi-hats other than open hi-hat between each kick drum, closed hi-hat on the beat, he/she would get arrested by the Trance Police for heresy! But even when Detroit records use those most basic of drum patterns, there is still a funk there that you don't find in trance. Why? Brendan
RE: (313) Studio Monitors
NS-10 are not recommended as only monitors. All the pro studios only use them so that people can hear the mix on the same monitors in every studio, or to simulate lo quality hi-fi speakers... you never see them used as only monitors. They also seam to be useful as a magnifying glass for middle frequencies. But in general they sound pretty awful, and you wouldn't want to listen to them for a long time. Even in the past this is true. I know plenty of current hip hop fans who are also massively into techno. Its certainly not true to say that hating techno is an ingrained part of the culture, as was suggested in the original post. Also, we need to be clear here on whether were talking about B-boys or Puff Daddy fans... I don't know. I've always seen the world of underground hip hop as being pretty receptive to incorporating or listening to other styles, but what percentage of the hip hop world is listenening to or participating in underground hip hop? I don't mean De La Soul, but the band that presses 1000 copies of their own record. If this was the culture Eminem came from, it's not the culture he helps define today. So yeah, I'm seeing mainstrem hip hop (which doesn't need to be defined by Puff Daddy) this way, but it's just a generalization. I know many exceptions, but I think the rule holds true. I know it doesn't support it at the moment but it'd be a good idea to put in support for Mp3 player connection, ie. load up all your tracks onto Mp3 player and take that with you. This would probably mean extending the unit (for UI) and extra cost. Re: [313] Question: Final Scratch
Surely this is only at twice the audible frequency ? We cannot physically hear 44KHz sound but we sample at that rate because its the nyquist value of 22KHz which is the upper bound of our frequency range ? Actaually we have to sample at 44kHz in order to get the frequencyes up to 22kHz. If you sample at 96kHz you get frequency response up to 48kHz.
