Very sad indeed. Understanding the urgency of the situation, I will say that TCM, or Traditional Chinese Medicine in general, and acupuncture in particular, have been shown to help facilitate a quick stroke recovery. Mr. Doyle, if you're reading this, please pass this information on to Moritz and/or his family for consideration, especially since alternative health therapies are much more embraced in Europe than they are here in the States. What will they think of next? Coloured Vinyl? Oh, hang on- it's marbled grey vinyl. That means you have to buy 3 copies- one to play, one to put away for a rainy day and another to sell on discogs sometime. :) Is this, Trak 6 Jason? If so, that's what I used to wash my ears out with this morning. ;) As Kent articulated a few months ago, I'm prepetually amazed how well they manage wicked kicks alongside big basslines. Anyway... I quite dig this one. As Interstellar said in their description, it's perhaps the most minimal of their latest output. That was their wording, although I'd say subtle might be a slightly less loaded description. My only criticism of it, as with many of their tracks, is that they can be a bit too long to listen to on their own, straight through, but that's a nice problem to have as a DJ. On this note, I've been unable to take the Detroit Remixes of Pacou (the Deepchord one) and both the Deepchord and Echospace remixes of The Shocking Pinks on DFA off of heavy rotation. Ridiculously swimmy stuff. I *really* want to hear them loud. This is probably part of why I was so disappointed on Saturday! But if anyone needs convincing about the distinction of their newer sounds from what it sounded like before, check the Shocking Pinks remixes. One of them reminds me more of Bob Marley's Jamming than anything else I can think of. Oh, and Ken: I passed on the Miranda remixes. I really don't think that's anywhere near the best of their recent output. (313) Techno Funnies :o)
Nicked from No-Future, funny and sad :-) 1. If you have some money to spend, feel free to bring lots of cocaine and ketamine. Don't splurge it all on the actual party , as the after party is where you drugs count - expect to be feeding your favourite minimal DJ's with tons of nose candy until late the next day. Be sure you can hang. 2. If you have a nice big flat and don't mind it being temporarily used as a crack house, be sure to offer it to your favourite minimal DJ before he or she leaves their respected party - be aware that you will most likely have no say on who actually attends the after party, but rest assure you are on your way to becoming a minimal hypster. 3. The haircut is very important, although it is very important - you must not let this be the DEFINING aspect. For tips on hypster haircuts, check on the internet for the latest pictures of Magda - be sure the photo is hot and up to date, as this commandment rotates about every 2 weeks - by that time there is thousands with the same haircut. 4. Underrated but very serious in your quest to minimal hyperstardom is the minimal scarf. Normally used by French artists say to the world hey I am an artist, shuchameblah this is now a sure-fire way to let everyone else know - hey I am down with the minimal sound. Current minimal hypsters who sport the minimal scarf include Luciano, Ricardo, Richie, Magda, Troy and Marc Houle. 5. If you ever have the chance to meet Rich Hawtin, when talking with him - make sure you agree with everything he says and most importantly REPEAT. If you do not have the pleasure of meeting him personally, but have a friend who has - just repeat to everyone what your friend has told you he said. If they are a true minimal hypster they will surely repeat their whole conversation anyway. With people such as Troy Pierce, Magda, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, this same rule applies to a lesser degree, but still enough to get you on your way. 6. This one is very important, forget about your health and live for the moment. You must be willing to take as many drugs as your favourite minimal superstar DJ. As long as your are willing to party until the last moment on a broad combination of drugs all at the same time, such as Ketamine, Mdma, lots and lots of cocaine, speed, LSD and the occasional mushrooms you will surely be accepted and furthermore run the possibility of being admired. You can never imagine the power of totally ruining your body and mind in the conquest to being a minimal hype star. 7. This one is simple! Keep it superficial. Under no circumstances should you have a conversation with some depth or meaning. Recommended topics of discussion are haircuts, the newest minus record, how cool magda is, how much drugs Ricardo took the night before, how cool the current party is, and how amazing of a musician Luciano is. Just tell yourself over and over, this is not actually being superficial - it's just being minimal. 8. Sex, Sex, Sex - in the minimal hypster world you should never expect to get laid before 48 hours of straight partying. Even if you have a special liking for that certain someone, keep in mind that if they too are an aspiring minimal hypster like yourself they will most definitely be at that after-hours, and where better place to get down to sexual business. (This is the time when taste, memory and morals are all flushed down the toilet) if you are a female, this is the time where you chances are highest of scoring with your favourite minimal superstar DJ, therefore immediately catapulting yourself into minimal stardom.(most of the time you will just settle for someone who knows Rich Hawtin). 9. Be sure to constantly read the writing of PHILIP SHERBURNE - he is the man who will always keep you informed on the newest and best hype on the internet. DO NOT EVER QUESTION HIS INTENTIONS OR MENTION THE FACT THAT ALL HE WRITES ABOUT IS HOW COOL RICARDO, RICH HAWTIN, MAGDA, LUCIANO, ROBAG WRUHME AND MUTEK CREW IS. He is literally the man to go to if you want to be fed with the minimal hype. Although it seems as if he is desperately trying to fit in and be accepted, everyone should realize HE HAS ALREADY BEEN ACCPETED. He just loves his role as minimal hypster so much that he wants to spread the love. As with Rich Hawtin the same rule applies to Mr. Sherburne, everything he writes or says AKNOWLEDGE, AGREE AND REPEAT. 10. THE MINIMAL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD BERLIN! If you wish to be a minimal hypestar, one of the easiest ways is to come to Berlin with no plan and frequent places such as the famous drug spots like bar25, club de visionarie and panoramabar. It is these locations in which your minimal fantasies become realities - expect to see people like Rich Hawtin, Matt John, Konrad Black, Troy Pierce and Magda totally out of their minds and much more easy to approach. It is here that you can forge those life long, superficial - I mean minimal relationships. These rules are meant in no specific order - ONE MORE
(313) Old vs. n.e.w.?
From a techno blog some may already be familiar with: http://testindustries.typepad.com/test/2007/07/past-mastered.html Past mastered This topic has been discussed in some of the forums recently, and it was something that I wanted to post about before I went away. The fact that I'm only getting around to it now says more about my poor time-management skills than anything else. Anyway, enough excuses, here goes; has anyone noticed the way that the same limited set of releases are getting played and charted all the time? I'm not trying to diss the legal digital download sites - hey, I even work for one - but it seems like the opposite is now happening to what the gatekeepers of the digital revolution had originally predicted. Remember a few years back, all the talk about the unlimited choice that the availability of electronic music in digital formats promised, the way we'd be able to buy the most obscure release or that the staggering range that these groundbreaking services offered would make it easier for even an aspiring DJ to differentiate him/herself from the pack. Unfortunately, it hasn't quite turned out that way, yet the sites can't be blamed: even a cursory look at Beatport reveals an exhaustive catalogue of music, but the problem is that nearly all of the users seem unwilling to delve deeper than the current top 10 or recommendations from their favourite DJs. Ironically, although it has never been easier to access electronic music, the range of what is being consumed, bought and played is getting narrower and narrower. Why is the reverse happening of what was predicted? Some of it can be explained by laziness: broadband connections, combined with the proliferation of Beatport, Juno, Kompakt et al means that it has never been easier to quickly acquire the same collection/Top 10 as the Hawtins, Mayers and Clarkes (or insert your own idol here) of this world. Once you have achieved that goal and own all the same tracks in your hero's top 10, why bother with anything else? With the use of Ableton, you can even replicate your chosen hero's recent super-smooth set, track by track. Another factor is that we live in a time-poor world, and having dealt with work, commuting and all the other menial chores that life demands, most people have a limited amount of time to source new (or old) music. The final factor though is the most important, and I'm sure many people who read the site will disagree with me, but it seems like in the constant search for the newest, most upfront music, a sense of history has gone out the window. It never fails to amaze me that charts or sets only consist of brand new music, that there is no attempt to link or connect to the past, from where this music came. By its nature, electronic music evolves at a fast pace, but it's still necessary to have an understanding of what happened in the past to fully appreciate what's going on now. One of this year's most original albums, 'Restaurant of Assassins', by Neil Landstrum is heavily inspired by old school rave and 90s bleep bass techno as well as dubstep and it sounds brilliant, a breath of fresh air in what I feel is an increasingly conservative, risk-averse techno landscape. No one wants to deal with snotty record store assistants, but one thing that shopping in real-life stores instills is a sense of a curiosity, to look beyond any given week's new arrivals and to explore the creaking shelves and dusty crates. Ten years ago, it was much harder to find great new music: it meant that people looked harder, went to their local record store a few times a week, often pre-ordered release, religiously read magazines for any shred of information about their favourite producer's future activity and generally behaved like proper trainspotters rather than sheep with broadband connections. I'm not suggesting that we return to those bad old days, but the way things were made people hungry to find new music. Nowadays, that sense of hunger seems to be largely absent, both in DJ sets and shopping habits - but I still hope that in 20 year's time, people will be listening to Ron Trent's 'Altered States' rather than this week's Juno top 10.

Re: FW: (313) Icon
It sounds like the version on the Innovator double cd is the heavily edited and shortened version of Icon (montage mix), whereas the trnasmat Icon vinyl and System 7/Derrick May cd version sounds more like a long jam (and much better, IMO). Apparently the System7/Derrick collab cd contains the long (Montage) version for the first time on cd, but that would have to be apart from the Buzz comp cd, right? Re: (313) Icon
Hmmm... What does the original Transmat mix of it sound like then?? On 2/28/07, Jacob Arnold [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, I think they're wrong about that since Virtual Sex was available on CD. I don't trust anything from the Transmat Innovator comp. since it's all strange edits. I think what probably happened is May put the Montage Mix instead of the Original Mix on the Icon vinyl repress, but I don't have one of the original 12-inches to know for sure. The length listed on discogs.com for the Montage Mix is exactly the same as the length of the version on my vinyl repress. If that's the case, the repress should probably be given a separate entry on discogs. Re: (313) Jeff Mills - One Man Spaceship
The samples from the Axis website sound great; one track in particular has a very hypnotic feel to it, the kind that could do major floor damage. Further (and I'm sure very enthusiastic) review to follow. Wojtek On 2/5/07, Toby Frith [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm a bit surprised to see no comment on Mr Mill's latest CD, although I suppose that the fact that it's on an extremely limited Japanese Import doesn't help! It's a return to form I think after 2 or 3 years of middling work from him. Very lush, abstract minimal techno in the same vein as Metropolis, which IMHO is still his best album. It is a bit frustrating however that a lot of people won't hear this record. And given that Mr Mills isn't an artist I think that needs return on these CD sales given his large DJ fees, it's a peculiar dichotomy because in today's climate a shop selling this CD online will have their stock bought up by collectors who then sell it on. Re: (313) Mills' Last Weekend Tracklist Update
He actually closed the LA show with The man with the Red Face, and right towards the very end of the track he faded in a little ambient pad-like track with looped and delayed vinyl crackles over it, which I thought was a nice finish. His incorporation of pioneer CDJs really makes me think of the reel-to-reels of old, when djs would play their own versions of tracks along with the vinyl... Just like the ping-pong-like sounding track--which I'm guessing is one of his own--he played over a few tracks throughout the night. On 11/29/06, Thomas D. As Marina said before me, he played Work it To the Bone, Chip E.'s stuff, and then, he started playing Detroit classics! After he transitioned into playing the older tracks, he dropped Reese and Santonio's How to Play Our Music and the place went wild! He then went on to jam on the 909 for a bit, and continued with obscure acid and early Detroit techno. One of the highlights of the Detroit part of his set was the way he programmed a slightly syncopated 909 beat and blended X-Ray's Let's Go into it and kept the two going for the duration of the track! In that night's show alone I heard more Detroit classics than all of the other Detroit dj's I've heard combined! (yes, he dropped Strings of Life and Jaguar, too, the timing of which worked very well, though). It truly was an enjoyable show for anyone who's into the harder side of techno, and definitely a treat for anyone who enjoys classic Detroit techno, made even more enjoyable by the fact that he played late 80's Chicago acid alongside some New York house classics like the above mentioned Work It to the Bone and an instrumental version of Searchin' on Nu Groove, for added musical context. If all those Detroit and Chicago classics weren't enough, he also played a a version of Basic Channel's Phylyps Trak (the track called Axis, on the Phylyps Trak ep) alongside the more straight ahead techno, and that had just sealed the deal for me as probably the best techno show I've ever seen; along with Mills' next day appearance a few hundred miles up the road in San Francisco. His saturday gig was also on point. He played the 909 live (again), along with a little sample he played off a cd that sounded like a repeating ping-pong noise (which he also incorporated into the set he played the night before). He layered that over the somewhat minimal, introspective, or just plain old Mills-y-sounding tracks at a few points throughout the evening, to a good effect. Now, just to keep us old school Detroit fans happy, he even dropped Derrick May's Wiggin' (in its original version, alongside the New York and Chicago classics he played the previous night) before moving on to the harder Tresor stuff; however, the classics focus that night was definitely on the Tresor side of the Berlin-Detroit connection. He played quite a few tracks from the x-102 and x-103 albums, a few Rob Hood tracks, and towards the end he even dropped Maurizio's hard-as-nails Ploy, which to me was the summit of the evening, making the the energy at the venue feel like what I would imagine the old Tresor club in its heyday to have felt like. A few tracks from Minimal Nation were there too--just like during his LA show, and the musical selection was kept current by some newer techno tracks by Sleeparchive and a Joris Voorn track (from the newer tracks that I recognized). Apparently he also did something amazing with a Basic Channel track at the SF show, but I got there too late to witness it. I don't know if these two shows are representative of how Mills plays now, but if he usually plays with this much intensity, creativity and variety nowadays (as opposed to some of his recorded minimal/loopy techno sets I've heard in the past), then he has my vote as the world's best techno DJ/live act (oh, the live 909 action...) Re: (313) (was) beatdown, (now) Beatdown, K Alexi, the Festival weekend review (long)
lin-up wasn't all that exciting), and on the last night Derrick May, Mike Huckaby and Louie Vega were the highlights. Derrick kept the pace of Beyer for about a half hour, and then played his signature tribal and melodic stuff. Some newer, unfamiliar to me tracks, a really cool funk/disco song after his signature acapella track, and some newer, almost electro/industrial tracks towards the end. The last track he played was rather interesting, a pacey beat, with a reverbed, dubbed out guitar riff, a rather melancholic sounding piece. Mike Huckaby played some nice house at the end of monday on the riverfront stage stage, a bit of modymann, and a new track at the end that D. May played before the end of his set also. Looks a like a new white label (anyone have info on what it was?). Louie Vega played a nice garage-y set earlier on the same stage, which kept the crowd happy and dancing, in spite of the early afternoon heat. It was also nice to meet of few of you guys in person (Fred and Dan Bean at the Beatdown show) and Tom Cox driving down Woodward on his way to white castle :o) Wojtek On Jun 24, 2006, at 11:50 PM, Philip wrote: funsters there is a short but OK article about ken collier beatdown in the current (well current here) issue of wax poetics, the one with bill withers on the cover warning this article contains descriptions and characteristics of the beatdown sound, no 'definitions' tho :^) philster

If the these promoters can't see a legitimate concern of a music fan as a dissenting opinion but instead get all huffy and puffy about the fact that someone DARED speak up about their concern that these producers are not really a fair representation of a larger scene, then maybe they need to grow some thicker skin. Or is SF a genre monopoly now? we say who is or isn't minimal, and we do so with our booking selection, [EMAIL PROTECTED]|t! And anyone who thinks differently needs to SHUT UP! And if producers cannot read a post that contains a balanced criticism of their performance thoroughly enough, instead of choosing to personally attack me for not bowing my head to them no matter what I thought of their music at a show, then maybe that producer should see whether they're doing music out of the love for it, or out a need to be unanimoously praised about their every and any creative direction they choose to take. Wojtek but the comment below is one of the most self-indulgent and indeed laughable ones seen here in a long, long time. It certainly doesn't portray John Tejada in any fashion relating to, you know, reality. All I'm saying is, if you book these guys, who, being relatively popular at the moment, are affordable by the promoters, then I'm sure that other producers such as Theo Parrish (maybe) or some more minimal guys would bring at least a reasonable crowd. I think that guys like Theo can get the chicks dancing just as good as the next guy, if not better. Mike Clark was in town the same night, but the promotion for it wasn't nearly as flashy as for the Kontrol party, and he had both the venue on Connecticut dancing, as well as Pink the night after, so maybe it's not as impossible as I think you're hinting at. and i don't think it's not that you're not entitled to have critical opinions, it's just that you could probably put them in a more positive manner. As far as this point goes, I started the thread by pointing out that Detroit guys who were in town (neither one of whom is extremely popular, but have a a decent enough body of work, especially Mike Clark) were not even mentioned in the email from the person that prasised John Tejada's show. After all, we are on a 313 list, right? And to boot, I do (or did, since I don't respect anyone who hurls invective my way without even reading my posts thoroughly, and can't handle critical remarks) enjoy earlier Tejada productions, which anyone could have figured out had they bothered to read my post from beginning to end. In fact, here's the quote: their music lacked in depth and emotion (aside from John Tajada's few emotive but far too short moments) . You're right, that doesn't go all out to praise him, but it sure as he|| doesn't diss him, nor is it even close to attacking him. even if you didn't mean it as a personal attack, it kinda sounded like it. Again, look at my quote from above, I did not slander anyone, only questioned the Kontrol guys booking preferences. But I guess in SF that means that I'll have a promoter cry to a producer, cite my emails out of context, and have him personally attack me. maybe think through the situation greg and the rest of the kontrol krew are in-- they've been throwing this night at a personal financial risk. i know they're trying to book acts that represent the music they love, but they also want folks to show up, so they might book artists that are also a bit trendy. oh well-- it's still been high quality music, with lots of pretty boys and girls dancing. does the trick for me. Fair enough. Any endeavor that goes beyond Tiesto or others in this town should be admirable, sure. BUT, if you advertise your gig as minimal techno, then at least try to book non-micro-house-glitch type artists ALL of the time. SF is trendy enough as it is, and if someone was to book producers or DJ's who might not necessarily be featured in the latest issue of urb or xlr8r, doesn't mean that it'll be a dead night. In my opinion the promoters in question do a good job of promoting the ppl they've booked, so is it really impossible to add some variety to the mix? If it they've tried and no other producers were able to come for whatever reasons, fine. But, like I said (in fairness, mind you) outside of Dan Bell most of these guys were strictly glitch type producers (at least at the moment). if you think that it's possible to throw a techno night in SF with even more out-there talent, step up. I don't know if it is. Are you saying that it's impossible? I did see Derrick May here a few years ago, and the crowd sure was dancing, even though it wasn't Sasha or Digweed, and Hawtin wasn't nearly as popular at the time in this city, when techno of any sort wasn't really on the clubbing radar. Also, Stewart Walker played at the same club last year (though on a night put on by diff. promoters), and the place was both packed and dancing. Nor were they all chinstrokers. i'll come check it out. (but don't come cryin' if the crowd is 75 chin-strokin dudes, all of whom dj or produce.) everyone take it easy and eat some friggin turkey already. -d --- Wojtek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ... Re: (313) Tejada/Maxwell in SF
Derrick call that someone who didn't care for the majority of his show names, and that forward that message to the list. That's real net etiquette for you. And once again, you deliberately choose these two quotes OUT OF CONTEXT. There's a key statement in between those two quotes that explicitly states that I HOPED TO HEAR MORE EMOTIVE, melody driven MUSIC AT THE SHOW. Criticism aside, there's nothing in that post that slags Tejada, if anything, it portrays my impression of the music I heard that night and what I perceived to be the other guy's (your friend Justin Maxwell's) influences. The term I used in the quote above, quirky does not have a negative connotation, does it? or is gimmicky offensive or diss-like in your eyes? If, in the context of earlier techno, I heard the hoover sound being used all over again, would you not consider that sound to be gimmicky if someone used it at a live show back in 94 or 95? Similarly, since it is safe to say that quite a few producers nowadays use the chirpy, or glitchy sounds, what's so offensive about stating that in a review if I see those sounds to be overused in modern productions? But it looks like it's not ok to do anymore on the list, if you're criticizing producers who have friends on the list (Now please respect my Reply-To: header and follow up to the list.) Sure thing. Please DO NOT quote my posts out of context in the future, and refrain from venting personal attacks on the list, unless of course that is the only argument you have against a critical remark. (313) Are we living in a parallel universe?
This just in: Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman has been kidnapped and replaced by Witchie Hawtin (much like Mario from the Nintendo game, who was kidnapped replaced with Wario), who has a diff. hairdo and extremely monotonous playing style (as opposed to the much livelier sets of the past). The replacement, Witchie, now credits himself with being an equivalent of a globe explorer in centuries past, and along with Ricardo Villabo-bos, and Sven Vath, on the cutting edge of techno and very, very underground. Wario was last reported to have been hanging out with trance dj's, exchanging notes on strategies how to get thousands of suburban white (in appearance AND spirit) kids into stadiums and listen to funkless music and think they like it. The real Richie is rumored to have secretly requested help from the Underground Resistance covert retrieval unit. :o) Wojtek
(313) Mike Agent X Clark and Delano Smith in SF
Having been to the Mike Clark and Delano Smith show myself, I must concur with Fred 's earlier post about the last 45 mins. of the show, though I thoroughly enjoyed all of Mike's set, and the very tail end (about three tracks or so) of Delano's as well. Though the sound quality of the venue may have been less than stellar, I think Delano played well, if a bit too mid-90's techno-rave-y (which is fine in the right quantity and the right variety of tracks, which he certainly did have). Mike's set was very good. I haven't really enjoyed the brand of (loosely termed) deep house before, the kind of which he played, but given the context and sequence of tracks it ended up being quite enjoyable and varied. Ron Trent's Altered States and some Relief-style tracks also made a very welcome appearance, along with Prince's Controversy. After their show Saturday Mike played at Pink (formerly known as Liquid) Sunday night. Given this town's perceived affinity for ecstasy and drug culture, he fittingly began his set with the Green Velvet track about pills (La La Land). It was fitting for him to play the Abe Duque track What Happened? with Blake Baxter saying what's up to Detroit techno, as the local music scene of late rarely plays host to any Detroit talent, largely favoring and booking the dj's who play the current so called minimal sound instead. But then again, SF has been a trend following city lately. But I digress. More power to the guys who put on Saturday night's show, in a proper venue, where the sound is loud and just a tad bit unclean (in that Theo Parrish kind of way), the roof is made of ruffled tin (giving it that stripped-down warehouse feel) and the location is far away from where the liquored-up yuppies in search of the current cool sound-of-the-moment roam.
