Apologies to everyone on the list for this. I lost my phone and all accounts
had to be reset so I guess that is the reason.

I guess the Sunday before last was his first night
there. Perhaps thats why the system was so messed up,
maybe he hadnt had a chance to tweak it, lets hope
thats why. Ill definitely check it out again. So
weird though it really did not look like him, or sound
like him. But yeah I did hear his last release was
harder and very good. Hopefully theyll get all the
probs ironed out and Ill have a chance to hear it

I recently went to the necto in Ann Arbor, Juan was
headlining. Wierd thing was that it didnt look like
him and it did'nt sound like him. It was a pretty
hard techno set. One would hardly know however
considering the sound system was so bad I had to
strain to recognize any particular song. Does anyone
know if this really was him. If so he's lost like
35lbs and looks 15 years younger?. Both of which are

I can't wait to hear this stuff. Detroit meets Berlin, explicitly as in
this care or not, is for me *the essence* of what 313ness is all about!

On a slightly less relevant note, since it's been mentioned ... Juan
lost a lot of weight a couple of years ago. Wife and kids will do that
for you if you let 'em! I see it as a good sign of healthy living:
Renditions of 'Cosmic Car' from a 60-year old Juan will be just as
welcome as 'Tour De France' from a Kraftwerk in their mature years has
been!

I think Juan is resident dj there, for now anyway. I saw his pic in Metro
Times over the weekend and he looked like he lost a lot of weight.

Yes, that's Juan allright.

Actually, I just got his new project on Tresor: the Berlin Sessions, and
it's also quite a bit more straight-forward than the classic material. This
doesn't mean that it's not good; on the contrary. I guess it all more or
less depends on your expectations. I think he's defenitely going to reach a
larger audience with this.

just to clarify before i get characterised as a p2p hater :)

i agree the below is legitimate use (i detailed it i my original post)

i agree with ani below.

thing is though if you want these tracks for playing out, or whatever,
mp3s (unless the very minimum of 192k, and even then) just won't cut
it. it has to be be a full wav/aiff. and do you trust th person who
ripped it to do a good job of recording it in? (uness ripped off cd of
course)

i view the p2p dl's as just a way of hearing a full preview of the
material really (like you can do on any record store but with short
low
quality clips). once heard an you like, buy it.

the dl'ing of stuff off p2ps of underground labels is basically
stealing. i know i know i've heard all the arguments about how this
shti should be free etc etc. but we aren't talking huge record
conglomerates here (dl'ing the latest missy elliot cd is a far cry
from
dl'ing a downlow release). in terms of underground labels we are
talking people like us just scraping together cash to get a run of 500
records out. sometimes selling parts of prized record collections on
ebay to do so.

to steal off people like that is wrong and will be to the detriment of
our scene.

ok, i've gone off on one there where it praps wasn't necessary but i
wanted to get that off my chest. i am not saying that p2ps are wrong
or
anything like that (though replace missy elliot with cubase and
downlow
with ableton and you have my views on cracked software) but i think
people if they dl the latest underground release off a small label and
they like it and play it then they are obliged to buy really.

sharing of mixes etc on p2p (unless it's a proper release off a cd) is
ok tho and is what i use p2ps for when i do.

robin...

can't wait to hear this.

regarding p2p file sharing of unreleased material, i don't condone
people stealing other peoples' material. but at the same time, i
believe i have the freedom to download material because i only play
vinyl and will ultimately have to buy the record anyway. i know the
titles i will buy when they come out, and may want a listen before
shopping. also, a bit of laziness when it comes to encoding vinyl
contributes to my support of sharing music on p2ps.

at public life by any chance ?

the mixes can be found at http://www.microlovr.com/313party/.

the files are quite large because i encoded them at a decent quality and
unfortunately my server and adsl connection can't handle too much traffic so
please be patient if you do try to download anything. when i get a chance
i'll re-encode the files at a lower quality so that i can attempt to make
them available for streaming and also lessen the burden on my server.

There will be a heavy 313 presence at Slices next weekend - it's
Saturday 21st December, and is happening at Public Life which is just
near Liverpool Street. I think there are three or four 313ers playing,
and there will be many more than that on the dancefloor!

If it's your only chance to go, I'd recommend going even earlier, around
5ish, just to experience the buildup from the latin/soul/(afro)funk they
play early on, seamlessly going into the house tracks later on.

Body & Soul @ Vinyl

6 Hubert Street

Many taxi drivers don't seem to know exactly where Hubert Street is (it's
relatively small), so I would tell them between Greenwich & Hudson, a few
blocks south of Canal. They shouldn't have any trouble from there.

And just in case: I noticed you referred to it as Body & Soul night, but

I'd say the Ewoks were very important in Return of The Jedi.

Seeing them and their development on Endor(land) gave us a realisation of
how great in staure Chewbacca was, who incidentally had more or less been
around from day one but just sitting on his arse (fanny or whatever). But
both were certainly required.

everybody who is checking the music history a lil bit knows that too -

and it´s not that you talk about a story, that is gonna get lost at the
moment

and this is what I think is funny -

all the Models in Paris cut their hair new wave kind a to be trendy

all the mainstream-music video´s - from "Pink, Babyface + Kylie Minogue"

come up with the 80ies reference - it´s just the pop-buzz of 2001 / 2002

and I´ve got tons of GB-jokes here in case you want them :D

Star Wars, an institution that would not exist without UK studios (Pinewood)
and a whole host of British actors - running throughout the series,
including heavyweights like Sir Alec Guinness, who you may have heard of.

as much as the original poster thought he was joking, the transatlantic
thing has played a huge role in house and techno so far and will continue
to do so...(i'm not just talking uk now, but europe)

this music has the power to bridge huge distances and is not language
specific. if that is not a unifying force for humanity i dunno what is.

obviously i'm a brit (actually i'm a european) so i'm bound to say that
:)

thassall i'm gonna say.

There will be rather large problems if they -don't- port to
windows/mac.

1. People want to use their own laptops.
2. Be has been bought out by Palmspring who have indicated they don't
plan to do anything with BeOS or any such stuff. Be were not making
enough money to survive and sold out. It will be interesting to see
where this goes, as whatever operating system FinalScratch runs under
must have some support.

2001-10-23 Thread Geoffrey Richards
I think that Final Scratch opens doors for people. Take for example a
dj/producer who doesn't want to have to spend $50 for each dubplate, doesn't
have the cash for that
nifty looking new vestax vinyl cutter, and doesn't have the connections to
get their work published.

What if their production work -- if played live--would mostly consist of
hitting play on the hard-disk recording device? I think that this
technology presents opportunities

for more original music to be played out.

Granted, I think that artists should be reimbursed for their work (ie should
get paid for their mp3s or cds or records). But for the price of the final
scratch (since I have a
computer, and have some recorded music) I can play my music in the context I
intended it to be played--on turntables for a crowd.

i have one house 12" from time before "cotton eyed joe" with banjo -
it's on loaded label but i can't recall the name of the track or ep. i
can check it out when i get home if someone's interested.
(which i doubt :)

there's one quite cheesy rave track made from carmina burana from around
1991 or so if my memory serves right - it was quite horrible.

anyway, its just music, let people sample what they want. and look at
the house scene, there's live drummers, guitarists, bassists and so on.

how is this relevant to hawtin anymore?

on the hawtin subject, i thought the new album is pretty cool. i don't
mind it being done the way it's done, megamixes still aren't a new form
of art, as i've said earlier on this same subject.

let's keep the funk alive,

bad banjo use??? maybe some people should try other instruments...how about
a hard acid track with an accordian making the bass line. that would be
tight. maybe a washboard for percussionary enhancement (is that a real
phrase???) oh, and a picalo to use during the break down...
damn, i am going to be rich AND famous with these ideas

the funny thing about this statement is that most of the innovators from
this time period in Detroit and Chicago that still have any musical standing
today were playing traditional instruments before they started making dance
music. It is funny that no matter how much technology we get, you still
cannot get around the fact that you have to write good music.

other people can enjoy it. computers and musical instruments, electronic or

Sorry, that's the same critic techno ( or New Beat here in Belgium )
received in the beginning from classical (rock) musicians : "with those
machines it's easy to make music". 303 vs. drumset, remember ?

You are talking about an instrument. Some will play with it, but few
will squeeze original content out of it. It's a good thing that maybe
more people will be attracted to Djing by this device. More people :
more possible talent.
It's not the machine that will be creative for you. I don't care if a
mix is made with PCDJ or SL1200's, as long as it's a good, surprising,
original set that gets my body shaking.

your words are very interesting. so what if vinyl is heavy, wears out and
is hard to distribute? all of those things are unique to the DJ trade and
the art form. thomas brinkmann is able to utilize a unique technological
tool, one final scratch can't even approach and that relies on vinyl and
not
mp3.

that not just anyone can have any track is central to my argument. dont
think i'm preaching vinyl elitism - but if everyone had access to any and
every track, would they create something unique, special, or anything but
homogenized? here's an analogy - if everyone had the exact same make,
model
and color Porsche, would it still be special??

more people with more access is giddy hat-tip to liberalist
egalitarianism.

part of the fun of DJing, to me, is digging through crates in used shops,
looking on the internet for out of print tracks, trading them with my
friends, cleaning them up once in a while and chatting with people all
over

the world when buying or selling vinyl.

"what you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level
and

inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to"

contradiction! first you say that everyone will have access to more
music,

then you assert that 'inventiveness' will occur? my retail experience
shows
me first that as soon as a new mix CD comes out kids are lining up to buy
the tracks on that mix. and often they don't just want the tracks - they
want to play them in the SAME order. second, since anyone can own and
play

anything, what will stop the 'top' DJs from playing all the songs a crowd
wants to hear? easy access is exactly why mp3 DJs devalue our beloved
music!

also, your statement seems focused solely on 'smooth mix' djs like hawti

I'm with the musical "luddites" Vince and Yair.
Technology is not necessarily all for the good.
Making very tenuous analogies with the advent of house and techno is
incorrect. It's like saying:
You've become accustomed to a high standard of healthcare now and you like
it, so who's afraid of a little genetic engineering?

Only time will decide who's right in this argument.

your words are very interesting. so what if vinyl is heavy, wears out and
is hard to distribute? all of those things are unique to the DJ trade and
the art form. thomas brinkmann is able to utilize a unique technological
tool, one final scratch can't even approach and that relies on vinyl and not
mp3.

that not just anyone can have any track is central to my argument. dont
think i'm preaching vinyl elitism - but if everyone had access to any and
every track, would they create something unique, special, or anything but
homogenized? here's an analogy - if everyone had the exact same make, model
and color Porsche, would it still be special??

more people with more access is giddy hat-tip to liberalist egalitarianism.
part of the fun of DJing, to me, is digging through crates in used shops,
looking on the internet for out of print tracks, trading them with my
friends, cleaning them up once in a while and chatting with people all over
the world when buying or selling vinyl.

"what you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level and
inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to"

contradiction! first you say that everyone will have access to more music,
then you assert that 'inventiveness' will occur? my retail experience shows
me first that as soon as a new mix CD comes out kids are lining up to buy
the tracks on that mix. and often they don't just want the tracks - they
want to play them in the SAME order. second, since anyone can own and play
anything, what will stop the 'top' DJs from playing all the songs a crowd
wants to hear? easy access is exactly why mp3 DJs devalue our beloved
music!

also, your statement seems focused solely on 'smooth mix' djs like hawtin,
and i daresay, many of the big room trance djs. what about those who dont
blend for hours? are you asserting that that m!lls is not inventive? rob
swift? cut chemist & dj shadow? et al?

i agree that people with too much money own a lot of good tracks.

but making tracks FREE to people will make that problem much, much worse.

while i support unknown artists sharing their work, universally accepting
this style of DJing will most certainly mire music production and DJing in a
rut of banality.

it's clear that you're behind this technology as some sort of 'bar-raising'
effort that would urge DJs to be more creative. in fact, like so much
globalization and imagineering, it's only going to homogenize an already
dilute musical form.

i'm briefed on final scratch. i've seen acquav!va use it. in addition, i'm
aware of the production techniques involved in the creation of both de9 and
closer to the edit. i'm also aware of the physics behind the technology.
i've watched these develpments rather closely.

you're missing one of my points: that many other DJs dont need it, dont
prefer it, and whose performance would be limited by said technology.

Just for the sake of playing the devil's advocate:

what you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level
and inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to.
instead of letting record companies, distributors, and record stores
determine what tracks you have access to you can play tracks by
anybody that cares to post them.

You're point against record companies, distributors, etc. overlooks
somethings. For example: if you don't have access to a computer that you can
easily download mp3 files from, have a portable computer, and/or can't
afford the FinalScratch hardware. Vinyl, 2 and a mixer (there are cheap
ones) are still more affordable and accessable to people than digitally
based mixing systems.

Other than that I agree with you 100%.

i don't think you understand what final stratch is, and how de9(?) was
made.

as far as i know, de9 wasn't made using final stratch. it was made in the
studio, with samplers and sequences--it's essentially a 60 minute track
remixed

by richie hawtin. it's not a dj mix cd.

final stratch is a tool that allows use to use two regular turntables and a
regular mixer to control any a digital file on a computer just like you
would a
slab of vinyl. you slow the turntable down and the digital file slows down
etc.

you do it live. it's not digital editing tool like pro tools or peak etc.
anything you do with you do live.

as for the detrimental trade on vinyl. well, it's heavy, wears out, and is
hard
to distribute. digital files can be endlessly copied and emailed all over
the
place, placed on sites. it allows more people to have access to more music.
what

you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level and
inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to.
instead of letting record companies, distributors, and record stores
determine
what tracks you have access to you can play tracks by anybody that cares to
