I have to give it up to Gina G from Dallas, I heard her play a blistering 
electro set a few months ago at the 216 & Convexion party.

Great tracks from start to finish, my only complaint is she didn’t get to play 
longer!

culturally misappropriated from Cork people and adapted it for my own use

Here's another one to watch, Antenes. She lives in Brooklyn but I knew her
in Chicago when she would play proper electro sets (the real kind not
whatever got called electro later). She's not only a talented visual
artists who used to do crazy stuff with holograms and lasers, now she
builds her own custom modular synths! Only has one release out (on
L.I.E.S.) but I know she plays live shows with hardware.

Two things:

First, not Detroit but in regards to female producers I dig Miss Jools and
her Sol Asylum label. It's house with a techy edge that would mix well with
stuff by someone like Norm Talley or Delano Smith. Also, Loren from Detroit
is a super talented younger DJ, I think she is like 22 and she's already
played the festival, and for good reason.

Second, as far as all female events, some of my female DJ friends seem to
have mostly negative opinions of all-female line ups, because they often
seem to be offered up in place of actually booking females regularly.

At the same time, the music industry is brutal even for males, and I know
it can be hard as hell hard putting up with all the extra shit as a female
producer or DJ, so I certainly don't think anyone should have a problem
with taking a moment to mention a few talented females who are working hard
at what they do, unless they happen to be complete assholes. The amount of
fucked up shit that females have to put up trying to make a music career is
ridiculous. That--not talent--is the reason there are so few females doing
it.

The simple fact that it is hard for anyone here to name more than a handful of

producers is, in itself, a reason to mention them. Clearly, the music should be 
judged
for itself, but in an ecosystem that is 95% (guessing here) male, there is

merit in just identifying female producers in order to hold them up, track down

music, and judge for oneself whether it is worthy of praise independent of the

of the maker.

However, the fact is that most music  cannot be judged independent of the

the maker. Techno is unique in that respect since it is largely visually 
anonymous and
devoid of vocals. I proffer that from a male perspective it seems easy to say 
“just
get over it and judge the music based on the music” but that does not take 
into
account the possible reasons for wanting to listen to and seeking out female 
produced
music, and the possible systemic challenges women and girls face both in 
learning to
produce music and getting it published and distributed.

(I’m couching this with “possible” here because I’m LONG out of the
scene and the internet has changed a lot. But I don’t think it’s changed 
many
ingrained attitudes and knee-jerk reactions….)

Here's the thing.  I appreciate difference. Everyone person who makes music
has a unique perspective, and it shows up in their music.

The perspective of men has no trouble gaining an audience. It may be
getting easier for women to get an audience, but it still isn't easy.  If
you seek out the women making music, you're helping equalize things a bit.

And it doesn't mean you compromise on musical quality by seeking out women
artists.  In the past 2 years I've bought more music by women than men, and
it is meaningful, well made, adventurous music. And while there's no one
thing that women bring to their music that's different than what men do,
there's always something.

So bring on the lists of women.  I'll always hear about the men who
produce.  Bring on the mostly or completely female lineups. The people who
actually have the guts to do that are putting on cutting edge, exciting
events. But boy they sure seem to offend some people by not having penises
on stage.

reading and researching without putting the burden on people of color, men
need to do the same. the burden is not on women to inform you of the
existence of sexism.

and 313 is always an appropriate place to bring up race and racism. we love
and talk and write about Black music. and a lot of us are white. we need to
be talking about it.

it's great to talk about female producers. i'm not one. i'm not a producer.
i'm not a dj. i'm a fan. and i'm a writer.

i mean, what if we were in a record store, we'd be saying i like this, what
do you like, back and forth. so our roll call here is just bigger because
there's more people talking.

This is true. But at every step of the process of becoming a producer and 
getting recognized it is more difficult for a female. From learning about 
equipment and what to buy, to having a cohort to learn to produce music with, 
to having a network to submit songs to, to having promoters give you 
opportunities to play, to labels taking you seriously and listening to your 
tracks, to discussions like this.

At each of those steps there are fewer opportunities for females. Just because 
it is more difficult for females does not take away from the fact that it is 
difficult for everyone. It is not a zero sum game.

And “patriarchy makes them harder to come by” is basically illustrated in my 
examples above.

The simple fact that it is hard for anyone here to name more than a handful of 
female producers is, in itself, a reason to mention them. Clearly, the music 
should be judged for itself, but in an ecosystem that is 95% (guessing here) 
male, there is indeed some merit in just identifying female producers in order 
to hold them up, track down their music, and judge for oneself whether it is 
worthy of praise independent of the context of the maker.

However, the fact is that most music  cannot be judged independent of the 
identity of the maker. Techno is unique in that respect since it is largely 
visually anonymous and devoid of vocals. I proffer that from a male perspective 
it seems easy to say “just get over it and judge the music based on the music” 
but that does not take into account the possible reasons for wanting to listen 
to and seeking out female produced music, and the possible systemic challenges 
women and girls face both in learning to produce music and getting it published 
and distributed.

(I’m couching this with “possible” here because I’m LONG out of the scene and 
the internet has changed a lot. But I don’t think it’s changed many ingrained 
attitudes and knee-jerk reactions….)
