the one who should get an award for most delayed post ever :) Name: Stefan Age: 27 Live: South of Berlin Born: South of Berlin Detroit time: since I was 18 yrs old Into Techno: 1. tracked music (.mod, .xm, .s3m) on computer demonstrations 2. X-MIX-1, Steve Mason Experience (BFBS) and Rave Satellite (Fritz, Berlin) Into Detroit: Wax Trax Vol. 1, some radio broadcasts of Ellen Allien in 1995/1996 ft. some deep detroit techno and house, Dave Clarke Electro boogie 2 and a 'detroit house'-special show on the german techno radio channel Evosonic (R.I.P.) in 1998. I liked this music style a lot before I even know what it was called. On the list since: January 20, 2005 (but interesting posts were forwarded by friends for years) what particular record(s)/event(s)/artist(s): Favourites (not 100% 313 though): Ellen Allien, Juan Atkins, Gary Martin, Kevin Saunderson, Kenny Larkin, Miss Kittin, Blake Baxter, DJ Koze Last artist found out to be mixing just music I looove: Aril Brikha !mportant things to know: I do not own a single record on vinyl. Never had a vinylplayer though. I did not went to any club or party ever. I do not write much on mailing lists / newsgroups / forums, I am a silent reader. :) What I would like to say: I really enjoyed to tape radio broadcasts (or do it by a PC in later years), but most radio shows have vanished. So I really appreciate what you do here to give me some hints on listen something or some mixes to download. Thank you ! What I am doing very often at the moment: setting trackmarkers into mixtapes, burn them on CD-R and put them into my car cd player What I am looking for at the moment: I am searching for a shop to buy Teknotika GG016 (Gigi Galaxy - Interview with an Alien) - had this track on an Ellen Allien radio show (Braincandy) from 1996. I would like to have it unmixed but I did not manage to buy it anywhere (CD or digital audio file preferred). I was looking for weeks on Ebay worldwide but I did not find a single entry. I crawled around shops on the world but all I found was a shop from the Netherlands with the CD The Seductive Sounds of Teknotika which does not contain the version I am looking for. http://www.discogs.com/release/72958 Is anyone able to help me out ? Thanks in advance, Stefan

First heard it on a AM Hartford urban radio station and knew this sound was something special. First Techno/ House Club: Riot, Hartford (1988/ 89). The club owner would give the DJ unlimited funds for buying records for his weekly trips to NYC. The DJ, Joe Giucastro, knew how to work the crowd and the music was very underground and cutting edge. When I went out to the club, It was like attending school and started me on my vinylmania habit. Radio Show: Hillbilly House, WWUH, Hartford, CT (late '80s and early '90s). RE: (313) Hello 313, I am....
Name: Brian. Age: 30 Place I live: Den Bosch, a city in the south of the Netherlands, a 1 hour drive from both Amsterdam and Antwerp. Born and raised: Uden, also in Holland. Job: tv producer and editor. When I'm not doing that I try to make music. Into Electronic Music: As long as I can remember. In the late 70s and early 80s my parents used to listen to Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, Schulze and the likes when I was playing my lego's. I was really obsessed with the music, perhaps also because I associated it with space (like most kids of the early 80's I was obssesed with space travel, the future and anything associated with that...). After I got a radio with a tape recorder I just recorded anything that had synthesizers in it. There was no good recordstores in our town so for a long time radio was my only decent source for electronic music. Shopping vinyl was actually strange to me also because my parents already had a CD-player in 1983... they where so devoted to hifi electronics, my family didn't give a damn about vinyl which in retrospect is a true shame... But luckily we lived close to an american army base with it's own radio station so I was able to record early hip hop and later I discovered some decent public and pirate radio stations that could feed me even more. And finally, much, much later I was able to make my own electronic music, which would make the 8 year old me very proud of the 30 year old me :) (all I need now is a villa in the south of France and a lightsaber). Into detroit music since: I am not sure. I got aware of it's importance for the music I love around 1997 or so, and I discovered that a lot of the music I liked was actually from Detroit. I joined the 313 list for the first time I think in 1998, been subscribing and unsubscribing since. But I don't think you noticed anyway. Favorite Detroit artists and music: too much to name and too much to still be discovered. Favorite live act: nobody particular. I saw as many great live acts as I saw acts that should never play again. Electronic live acts I'll remember as the most impressive I've seen include Unit Moebius, Plasma Co., YourPyramid, Egyptian Lover, Dopplereffekt and UR. Favorite place to listen to music: my car. Not that I have one of them boom-cars or anything, it's just a great place to listen to music without getting really distracted. Re: (313) Hello 313, I am....
Name: Mario De Block Born: 18/07/1971, Sint-Niklaas Live: Antwerp Job: government, biologist Discovered house/techno: through MTV's PartyZone and Rave Radio, originally a late friday night radio show on dutch radio 3. it included 'Clubland' from The Ghetto Brothers and i was hooked. About the same age Moby's 'Go' sent shivers on my spine. My first real identification with 'underground' music was with Time Zone's semi-rebellious 'World Destruction'. In terms of electronic music in general, I think Pink Floyd's 'Welcome To Machine' was the first track to really alienate me First techno party so far: Sun Electric/Biosphere/Robert Leiner at Pacific, Antwerp, feb 94. Although i remember my first (of two) Love Parade experience in 1999, when you would drive out of Antwerp at 03.00 am and already at that time, be recognized by likeminded people passing by ;) Best club: Fuse (which is obvious for Belgians i think). You could enter the spot in the most mundane kind of mood and be supplied with enough energy for 2 weeks. I remember the era where Aphex Twin and u-Ziq would play there and house and techno music was still a 'family' thing you didn't share with just anyone ;) I also remember I deliberately touched Richard D James and felt the magic for a second ;) Worst techno/house party so far: a party having Stacey Pullen/100% Isis/Marcello and Koenie on the list in Sint-Niklaas. A totally out-of-context sports location with mirror walls and utterly wrong-spirited posh people safeguarding the event. But a boat party in Brussels with Johnny Fiasco at the deck counts in too here: three people boarded, and the organizer committed suicide the next week. Some people just never get what they deserve Best techno party so far: Exil 98, at the seaside of Cherbourg, France. To me, the french really have this unique, raw-edged kind of idea about parties (you'll know about their 'free party culture' I guess). I'm not hinting at the Astropolis party of 2000 when a visitor was killed though. Movement 2003 was peaking creatively as well i think, but the fact that it was my first visit to Detroit might have helped ;) Best live act so far: probably the Chain Reaction crew feat Tikiman and Monolake at the 6am dawning of a day in july at Astropolis. But Object at a Foton 'Capture' event in Brussels, 2001, with six Volkswagen car frames being used as speakers, and totally absorbing micro-electronics going with it, tops my ranks as well Best dj set so far: Steve Rachmad at Tresor Park, july 1999? Always was and always will be a fan of: Talk Talk. Captivating techno experience advice: listen 'Red Angel' by Hallucinator, stargazing or watching clouds pass by. It just makes me feel 'connected' Mario

Into Techno since: 1990 Growing up near Pasadena, Depeche Mode and the like were an ever-present influence. In my early teens discovered lots more synth pop and alternative stuff. Mid-teens discovered industrial and Belgian new beat. Took a while to find lots of other techno in Iowa. Started DJing when I was 17 at the University of Iowa's radio station and quickly filled the vacant dance music slot, which I held for five years. Over that time (92-97) went through rave stuff to trance/ambience to Detroit, Chicago and Berlin. I should be posting archives of some of my favourite old radio shows in the not-too-distant future, so keep your eyes peeled. You'll get to hear me sounding like a nervous, hyper, uber-dork and can cringe with me. OK, I've been lurking on here for ages and rarely get time to post, so here goes; Introducing: Name: Simon Pascoe Age: 37 Place I live: Hitchin, a small town in the middle of nowhere, 30 miles from London. Into Electronic Music: In the '70s when I was a kid, my Dad was a HiFi salesman. One of his colleagues leant him a tape called Autobahn by some weird German group - I was hooked from the start. Dabbled with Jazz funk and dub in my early teens, and then went through early electro and house. Got into the 313 sound when I heard Model 500 Off To Battle on a compilation, and subsequently rushed out and bought the new (at the time) Techno: The New Dance Sound Of Detroit compilation on Kool Kat. Somehow lost touch with most of the 313 output for most of the early 90's, but got back into it again properly around '96. These days trying to write my own music, but drowning under a heavy dayjob at the moment. Webpage: Not yet ... on a very long to-do list. Name : Pete Leidy Age : 28 Place I live : Ypsilanti, MI USA. Grew Up: Ann Arbor, MI (almost same as above) On list: Since '00 or so Into techno: since around 93 I liked Vangelis and Kraftwerk growing up, but knew almost zero about electronic stuff until I started buying more music in high shool.. Started w/ some ambient rave comps around 92-93; being close to Detroit I caught on to Plastikman and Juan's Magic Tracks CD by '94. First party was in '94 at Hastings w/ Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, and a few more. Started buying vinyl '95 (DBX - Probe 07 was first Detroit vinyl I think). A few years later started co-hosting the Crush Collision radio show (wcbn.org - Ann Arbor) with BMG and Carlos Souffront. Moved to Chi-Town for a few years, now back in MI and back to doing the radio show (Todd Osborn is co-hosting now too). We're not as cool as Matt McQueen by providing you w/ all our archives ;) but you can listen online thursday nights (sorry- somehow I managed to turn this into spam). I was afraid of the damage this thread would do to my inbox, but its been interesting, and hello to all new and old faces since I rarely post here :)

Cloud 9 it was (I think it was me that reminded you ;)) I was there, not overly impressed by the night at the time, though I suspect I would have a slightly different take on it nowadays. I remember being exceedingly impressed by the greeters who came over with UR (maybe Cliff?), they were really nice. I remember seeing a pair of older guys there (or so they seemed at the time) who were standing towards the back. They really stood out from the crowd since they were wearing suits and dancing incredibly beatifully. With hindsight one of them might have been Mills, whoever they were they looked pretty serious! Does anybody remember those dudes? I now it's a bit of a long shot but it's one of those embedded rave memories that has really stayed with me. Can anyone shed any light? Thats the place Jamie - not quite what it was (as in Rub-A-Dub [Martin] dont do every Saturday night - they even gave me one of them monthly for a while) but its still the place most likely to get me out and about if there is something decent on. I missed DJ Bone that night since I had to work, but it was the weekend after James Stinsons passing and he ripped things up in his memory from what I was told. I am sure Kerso used to be on here - had arranged to meet him at a Tejada night a few years ago but didnt make it so have never met him in person. Re: (313) Hello 313, I am....
Since Matt has so kindly pointed out the livejournal aspect of the 313 this AM, I'll reveal the moment of shame that begins my association with 313 music. Name: Marc Christensen Age: 35 Born: Baltimore. Lived: Detroit '72-'01. Victoria, BC, Canada '01-present. First 313 experience: participating in a 1985 high school dancefloor sit-down to protest the Jit content of some whack DJ who was supposed to be the sh*t. There was supposed to be alt-mod-new wave-italo content, but no, it seemed like the DJ just wanted to play hip hop, and scratch things together way too fast. That DJ was Jeff Mills, and he bitterly recalls this experience in a mid-90's interview. Sorry, Jeff. IIRC, it would have been at Redford High, or something like that. Made up for waking up on the wrong side of the 313 by: visiting Alan Oldham's ancient WAYN-FM radio studio for further New Wave guidance during '85 and '86. There's irony for you. Track that still does it all: It Is What It Is. Track that goes even further: Red Planet 1: A2. Lost Transmission from Earth. A kicker at 45rpm, but at 33 it goes beautifully downtempo with DEE-EEE-P bass, and Cleaver's voice is perfectly distorted. Favorite 313 memory: DEMF 1, Sunday Morning (okay, early afternoon), Saunderson kickin' out a glorious gospel-tinged set in the sunshine at the main stage. I dance almost the whole set with my two-year-old son on my shoulders. Of all the 313 events I've missed, I would have wanted to be here: Sunday Brunch at that One X place on Michigan Ave just downtown from the Michigan Gallery (now Zeitgeist). Mostly because I heard it was kid-friendly, outside in the sunshine, and walking distance from home. A lost opportunity. Favorite club: I'll be able to answer this question a bit better in six weeks' time, after visiting the D again. Clubs in or near Corktown will be favored, since I'll be able to stumble home from them without endangering anyone on the road. In-town suggestions for the week of July 2-8, and July 28-August 4 warmly welcomed.
