[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Campbellville (Milton)

2019-07-21 Thread Hartshorn, James via ONTBIRDS
Ontbirders

Just had a pair of Sandhill Cranes fly over my house, calling loudly and
heading south from Brookville towards Campbellville and Milton. Keep your eyes
and ears open if you’re in the area.

Brookville is 5 km north of Highway 401, on Guelph Line to the west of Highway
25 (Milton) and to the east of Highway 6 (Guelph).

Good birding.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Pine Grosbeaks, etc., etc.

2018-11-16 Thread Norm Murr via ONTBIRDS
Yesterday Nov. 15th Ian Cannell and I drove up through Bolton and along Hwy 9
to County Road 10, up 10 through Angus and on up to Hwy 26 at Sunnidale
Corners, east along Hwy 26 to Strongville Road, along some roads around
Strongville then on over to the Muley Point Road area on the east side of Lake
Simcoe across from Orillia then east along Ramara Township Rd 46 from Hwy 12 to
Avery Point on Lake Dalrymple and then on down Kirkfield Rd 6 to Kirkfield and
over to Prospect Rd, down Prospect Rd to Glenarm Rd and over to Hwy 12/48 and
on down home.

Though we did not rack up a large number of species we did find some nice birds
and following are some of them.

Great Blue Heron, 500 Canada Geese, Common Goldeneye, 21 Hooded Mergansers,
350+ Common Mergansers on Lake Dalrymple, Red-tailed and Rough-Legged Hawks, A.
Kestrel, 2 Ruffed Grouse, 1000+ Sandhill Cranes, 35 Herring and 1 Great
Black-backed Gull, Snowy Owl, Red-bellied and Pileated Woodpeckers, 7 Common
Ravens, Robin, 2 Northern Shrikes, A. Tree Sparrows, Song Sparrows, 150+ Snow
Buntings, 3 Pine Grosbeaks, 1 male and 2 females together on the road (Rd 46 at
Hwy 12).

Note:- The Cranes were on and over the fields along Strongville Rd (south of
Hwy 26 and west of Edenvale) and the Herring Gulls were laying down resting
together in a field, probably a resting migrating flock and a juvenile Great
Black-backed Gull laying down there as well.

If you go to see the Cranes please do not trespass on the fields to try and get
closer with your camera or binoculars as this will probably flush these resting
birds that many others may want to see. They are easy to see and hear from the
road or from within your car, be sure to park so as not to block the road.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes

2018-11-15 Thread Peter Wukasch via ONTBIRDS
I was pleased to be out on my deck filling the bird feeders when 5 separate
flocks totaling 120 Sandhill Cranes flew right over the yard in the heart of
Bradford. We usually have a pair or two nesting north of town, but I have never
encountered this many in the 30 years we have lived here. They were headed west
perhaps to roost in one of the local corn fields and were calling the entire
time. The flocks were seen just south of Holland St. west of Highway 11 north
of the 6th Line of Bradford West Gwillimbury at about 11:45 AM.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes - Navan Ontario

2017-11-01 Thread ad753stephen--- via ONTBIRDS

I watched approximately 50-60 Sandhill Cranes foraging in the harvested corn
fields south of Smith Road between Milton and 10th Line Roads for about 90
minutes around noon today, November 1, 2017. A larger number of Canada Geese
were also there.

Several small (family?) groups of 4-5 birds each flew in to join the flock over
the course of the time I observed them. The birds stayed about 400-500 meters
from the road but were easily visible using binoculars.

Here's a link to one of the images that I created although it was a big crop.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swan(s) and a Rough-legged Hawk along McKinnon and Strongville roads and Concession 2, Minesing Swamp at Angus

2017-03-29 Thread Weseloh, Chip (EC) via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontbirders,
Yesterday afternoon, we travelled the above roads in this wonderful wetland
area looking for early migrants. Along McKinnon Rd. headed north, just where
the blacktop ends, we heard 3-4 Sandhill Cranes calling off to the NW as well
as about 40 swans in a field 300-400m to the west. To the north, at the
junction with Concession 2 (Sunnidale) was a yellow wing-tagged (M42) Trumpeter
Swam and a half dozen Northern Pintails. Concession 2 was flooded and
impassable so we back-tracked towards Angus, took Hwy 10 north to Concession 2
and turned right (east) and followed it to the water impass; we flushed several
Killdeer along this road as well as a Rough-legged Hawk. Several large flocks
of grackles, red-wings and starlings were in the wet fields but no Rusty
Blackbirds. We returned to Hwy 10 taking it north to Concession 7 and turned
right (east). This road turns left (north) after a km or two and becomes
Strongville Rd. Shortly up this road, we noted a large flock of Canada Geese
(200 b
irds) off to the right in a distant flooded field, just in front of a large
wooded area. Off to the left of the geese were about 30 Sandhill Cranes
foraging in the field.
In the next couple of weeks, this area will be a Mecca for waterbirds of all
sorts...and, of course, there is a roosting site for Great Egrets on the north
side of Concession 2, just west of McKinnon Road.
Good Birding,
Chip and Linda Weseloh

Directions
>From Barrie, go west on Hwy 90 (which crosses Hwy 400) towards Angus. Just
>before you reach Angus, go right (north) on McKinnon Rd, which intersects with
>Concession 2 and dead-ends shortly thereafter. Return to Hwy 90 and turn right
>(west). As Hwy 90 angles to the left to enter Angus, go off to the right to
>follow Hwy 10. Follow Hwy 10 to Concession 2, turn right (east), follow it to
>a small bridge, past a small parking lot on your left; venture farther east as
>water-over-the-road permits. Return to Hwy 10, turn right (north), follow it
>to Concession 7, turn right (east). Concession 7 will eventually turn left
>(north) and become Strongville Road...which eventually comes to a T with Hwy
>26; go right (east) to return to just north of Barrie.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes on Ravenshoe Rd. West

2016-12-01 Thread Steve Kinsley

Around 2:00 p.m. today, a pair of Sandhill Cranes were seen foraging in a harvested carrot field on the north side of Ravenshoe Rd. in Georgina, about 1.5 to 2 km west of Leslie St. Not sure how long they will stay, but would be nice if more joined them, as there is plenty of good foraging ground. Other birds of interest seen were an immature Northern Shrike and a female American Kestrel. Although the resident Bald Eagle pair were still present a couple of days ago in the Bruce St. wetland, no sign was seen of them today. Unsure if they were hunting further afield, or have left for the season. No sign of Snowy Owls, Snow Buntings or Horned Larks yet, but expect them anytime soon!
Ravenshoe Rd. can be reached by driving up Hwy. 404 to its end, then turn north for a short jaunt and turn left on Ravenshoe Rd. Leslie St. is 2 km west, and continue another km or so to reach the beginning of the marsh lands and agricultural fields. For winter birding, it's worth a drive to this area!

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes - Ayr, ON

2016-10-09 Thread Ken Hough
A flock of sandhill cranes numbering 50-60 birds was observed flying this
afternoon just west of Bannister Lake, east of Ayr. They were later observed
foraging in a pasture field nearby.

Although it is common to see a half dozen or so cranes throughout the summer
in this area, I expect the larger numbers are due to cranes congregating
prior to their migration south for the winter.

Banister Lake is located where Dumfries Road and Spragues Road (Hwy 24A)
meet the Ayr Road, about 5 km east of Ayr.

Toronto. A good viewing location is the harbour at the foot of Simcoe St.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes and others , Haldimand

2015-02-18 Thread RW Bullock
Hello Everyone:

Dave Moffat and I scouted parts of Haldimand County today on behalf of Dave
Milsom who will be leading the Haldimand OFO trip this Sunday, Feb 22.
We found a total of exactly 25 Sandhill Cranes along the (West) River Road
in two separate fields south of Cayuga. They were feeding thru the snow in
non-corn fields. Other highlights included a Tufted Titmouse at the Ruthven
feeders, 10 species of Ducks in the Caledonia Rapids, and numerous
excellent displays by Rough Winged and Red Tailed Hawks along River Road
and near the Nanticoke Power Station. The most common bird of the day was
the American Tree Sparrow, seen almost everywhere. 34 speicies.

Directions for the Cranes: From Cayuga, head downstream (SE) along the
(west) River Road. When you see the first Wind Turbine, look to the fields
to the west. The cranes were about 500 metres NW of the turbine.

These postings are late, and more of local interest perhaps:

1) Saturday; near Gananoque; off hwy 32 near hwy 15; Long Point Rd at Olajos

water, 11:30 am to 4:30 pm, one entering breeding plumage;

2) Saturday; near Odessa; a pair of Sandhill Cranes flew SW over the 401 at
Wilton Rd;

3) Sunday; near Belleville; Frink Centre sugar shack trail; in sultry, still,
humid bottomland, singing were Hermit Thrushes, one Swainson's Thrush, two
Brown Creepers, one Ruby-crowned Kinglet, numerous Golden-crowned Kinglets and
DE Juncos, two Yellow-rumped Warblers, one Winter Wren, and Eastern Phoebes
which will likely nest on the Maple Sugar Shack. Flickers, YB Sapsuckers, and
Pileated Woodpeckers are also excavating cavities there.

On the Riverside Trail, 3 Pied-billed Grebes in the shallows of a high Moira
River.

Warning, Frink Centre Trails: For those familiar with the Frink Centre, ice
still covers the large wetland off the parking lot, and the bridge crossing the
bottomland near the sugar shack is completely under water, with only railing
occasionally showing.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Little Gulls, etc., etc. - Hagersville Long Point areas

2013-11-17 Thread Norm Murr
Yesterday, Sat. Nov. 16th Ian Cannell and I birded the subject areas and
although the daylight hours are short now we did cover a lot of ground and we
did find 58 species of birds but some waterfowl were too far out on the lake to
ID.

Following are some of the birds and some of the totals (some totals
guest-estimated of course with some like the R-B Mergansers and other waterfowl
likely very under estimated).

Common Loons, Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, D-C Cormorants, 1000+ Tundra
Swans, N. Pintail, 250 to 300 A. Wigeons, 350+ Canvasbacks, 1000+ Greater
Scaup, Lesser Scaup, 50+ Bufflehead, 2500+ Red-breasted Mergansers (many flying
past over the lake), Hooded and Common Mergansers, Northern Harriers,
Rough-legged Hawks, 22 Red-tailed Hawks, 12 American Kestrels, 2 Merlins, 350
to 400 American Coots, 175 to 200 Sandhill Cranes (one large flock in a field
was too dense to count), 22 Dunlin, 5 Little Gulls, Bonaparte’s Gulls, 1 Lesser
Black-backed Gull, N. Flicker, Carolina Wrens, 8 E. Bluebirds, N. Mockingbirds,
50+ A. Pipits in one flock, 50+ A. Tree Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, many
Dark-eyed Juncos, 500 to 600 red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackle and
Brown-headed Cowbird.

Inner Bay off Port Rowan Harbour contained an estimated 1 to 12000
waterfowl but most too far out to ID even with a scope and there was a good
number of Bonaparte’s Gulls on and over the bay.

During the week and on Saturday you will be birding in the Long Point area with
a background of gun fire coming from duck shooters.

Directions

HAGERSVILLE AREA

Hagersville is south of Hamilton on Hwy 6.

Exit from Hwy 403 at Hwy 6 in Ancaster and continue southeast then south to
Hagersville.

You just simple bird any road in the Hagersville / Jarvis / Fisherville /
Nanticoke square ( a rough square ).

LONG POINT AREA - CENTERED ON PORT ROWAN

Port Rowan is southwest of Hamilton, to reach it you can drive south on Hwy 6
from Hamilton, passing through Hagersville and turning right, west in Jarvis
onto Hwy 3, drive to Simcoe and turn left, south on Hwy 24 and follow this to
Hwy 59, ( it curves to the west south of Simcoe) and your in the Long Point
Area.

Turn left (south) on Hwy 59 at Hwy 24 and Port Rowan is straight down Hwy 59
(about 6 kms) on County Rd 42 (Lakeshore Rd), Big Creek Marsh, etc. are just a
little further south of County Rd 42.

Or you can exit Hwy 403 just west of Brantford. Exit at Hwy 24 South at Exit 91
and drive south through Simcoe and follow it to Hwy 59, ( it curves to the west
south of Simcoe) and your in the Long Point Area.

The wood lots, fields, marshes etc. are north, south, east and west of Port
Rowan.

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes Swimming: Pointe au Baril

2013-07-16 Thread Max Perren
Dear Birders,
Sandhill Cranes are becoming more common in the Pointe au Baril area.
However, the Sandhills that are near our cottage are quite interesting. On
Saturday and Sunday evening they (Male and female with a chick) swam across
our bay. Our bay is about 130m wide and probably 5m deep. I was certainly
surprised and thought some would be interested in hearing about our
Sandhills. I do have pictures.

Pointe au Baril is 42 kms north of Parry Sound; however, our cottage is
quite a distance from the mainland. The bay in question is found at
45.51044N 80.47279W.

Best,

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes, Minnesing Wetland area, Angus, Ontario

2012-10-21 Thread Susan Menzies
Hi fellow birders,

Today Lynne  Bill Richardson I birded the west side of Minnesing Wetlands
north of Angus.  Our target bird, the Sandhill Crane didn't disappoint us.
There was a massing of several hundred Sandhills at around 5PM on the north
side of the 9th concession, Sunnidale in Clearwater Township, in a decobbed
corn field north of the home at firelane 4440.  The birds were distant enough
that the red hoods were difficult to see so a scope is helpfull.  It is always
a stirring sight to see so many of these beautiful birds.  There are few bailed
or cobbed corn fields in the area this year so the normal Strongville locals
are not as promising.  There were 15 birds near the big silos in the field west
of the 18th/19th Sideroad, Sunnidale.   These birds are probably best seen in
the morning or late in the afternoon when they leave the wetlands to feed.
There seemed to be quite a few juveniles this year.

Of note we also had many clusters of mixed blackbirds a murder of about 100
crows in flight there were several Northern Harriers including a female that
hovered hunted for a good five minutes for us.  We also had an interesting
Red Tailed Hawk with a very rufous head back white front with some pale
streaks that was banded. Other birds were what one would expect at this time of
year  they are plentiful.

To reach 4440 9th Concession Sunnidale go North from Angus on Brentwood Rd
(County road 10) to 9th Concession turn right or East.  From HWY 400 exit at
Dunlop Street West travel west to Brentwood Rd (County road 10), turn right
follow to 9th Concession turn right or East.

Good birding,

Hello birders.

At dusk could be seen a flock of about 30 Sandhill Cranes, a couple of
wing-tagged Trumpeter Swans and various flocks of ducks (it was too dark to
identify the latter). Some Trumpeters seem to be permanent residents of the
area.
Bannister Lake is a small kettle lake located east of Ayr at the junction of
Hwy. 24A (otherwise known as Pinehurst Road or Spragues Road or Cty. Rd. 75)
and Wrigley Road or Cty Rd. 49. Park in the small lot 200 metres west of the

running East/west that is corn that has been harvested but not plowed under.
There were about 300-500 Sandhill cranes there. When we circled this field via
Strongville, 9th back south on the 15/16th there were many more cranes in
similar fields. We estimated up to 1000 birds. As the sun was low from the
15/16 there were streams streams of geese coming into these same fields to
feed. A tremendous sight experience. We also had an early delightful flock of
Snow buntings.

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes west of Cache Bay

2011-09-19 Thread darlinga
West of Sturgeon Falls on highway 17 I took the turn to Cache Bay, where there
was a Belted Kingfisher and Raven. I
left Cache Bay on Levac road and turned south on Guenetta Road. South of the
railway tracks there were over 100 Cranes
flying, mainly on the west, so I went to Laplage Road, the next road south from
Levac.

Between Guenetta and Laplage there was a flock of 40 Cranes south of Levac
Road. On Laplage there were 240 in groups
ranging from 30 to 120, plus others flying.

Also in that area were 4 American Kestrels (+ 1 later further west), 1 Merlin
and 1 juvenile Northern Harrier.

East of Warren there was a Ruffed Grouse on the shoulder of the road, and west
of Warren there was a bear on the railway
tracks watching the traffic on the road.

[Ontbirds] sandhill cranes in Navan

2011-09-19 Thread Bob Scranton
At 5:15 this afternoon , Tom Devecseri, showed my wife Dawn and I 26 sandhill
cranes intermingling with a large flock of Canada geese south of Smith Rd. in
Navan. They are in great color and quite active as we saw several sparring with
each other. This seems to be a roosting spot as they are not always there
earlier in the day. Tom thinks some of these cranes nest in the Mir Bleu area
and they are joined by migrating birds as the season progresses. He observed
over 80 late in the season last year.
To get there take Navan Rd. east and exit at Milton Rd. Turn right at Smith
Rd. and proceed half a kilometer. The birds are in a harvested field just past
a cornfield on the south side.
Earlier we observed the Sabine's gull at the Duchesne Rapids from the Que.
side.
Follow Bruce Dilabio's directions for the Gull. Bob Scranton

[Ontbirds] sandhill cranes, snowy owl Bruce mines

2011-04-07 Thread Pat and Dan Kerr
The sandhill cranes have arrived and were feeding on the south side of
McPhail Rd. the last two mornings before 8 am and in the evenings. They are
calling loudly during the morning hours.

The snowy owl was last seen 2 days ago. It has been making low passes over
the fields about 3 afternoons each week.

A bald eagle was seen two days ago over the town. Many other summer birds
arriving daily although the harbour is still frozen

Bruce Mines is about 3 hours west of Sudbury on highway 17. To reach McPhail
go north from Bruce Mines on 636 over the railroad tracks and turn east.

Good birding

[Ontbirds] Sandhill Cranes and other migrants in Huron County

2010-11-24 Thread Dave Martin
Ross Snider, James Holdsworth and I had a great day of late fall migrant
watching along the Lake Huron shoreline in southern Huron County between
Grand Bend and Bayfield. The weather forecast was for moderate E winds
at Goderich and NE winds at Kincardine, farther north along the lake
which are the best wind directions that cause southbound migrants to
drift towards the Lake Huron shoreline where they concentrate [just as
northerly winds cause migrants to pile up along the Lake Erie or Lake
Ontario shorelines. We weren't disappointed.

As Alf Rider has already reported, migrants were moving along the
shoreline in good numbers today. Cynthia Cook saw 4 flocks of Sandhill
Cranes numbering 325 birds today in north Lambton just south of Kettle
Point . Between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. we saw 10 flocks of cranes
totaling 691 birds ranging in flock size from 6 birds to a massive flock
of 250 birds. From prior experience we assumed that the flocks of
Sandhill Cranes would disperse through Lambton just south of Grand Bend
where the shoreline bends to the west towards Kettle Point. However, it
appears that at least some of today's migrants continued to follow the
Lake Huron shoreline. Birders should consider a trip to the Lake Huron
shoreline north of Grand Bend in mid to late November just to see the
large numbers of Sandhill Cranes. In previous years our group has seen
large numbers of cranes on most visits during this time frame. On
November 10, 2007, Ross and James saw 80 cranes and on November 18, they
counted 837 birds, surely a record high count for southwestern Ontario.
On November 11, 2009, four of us saw 27 cranes.

But, it's not just Sandhill Cranes that follow the Lake Huron shoreline.
Ross and James showed in 2007, that astounding numbers of Rough-legged
Hawks follow this route in mid to late November. On November 10, 2007,
they had 143 individuals and on November 18, 77 individuals. Either of
these one day [half day, actually] counts surpasses the YEAR count for
most Lake Erie hawk migration counting sites [Hawk Cliff, Holiday Beach
and Erie Metropark]. Today was another high count for Rough-legged Hawks
with 37 individuals in just 5 hours. [There were still birds migrating
when we called it a day at 2:30 p.m.]

Golden Eagles also, migrate along the lake in impressive numbers.
Today's count was 7 individuals. Counts in other years were 13 on Nov 10
and 26 on Nov 18, 2007 and 7 birds on Nov 11, 2009.

The rest of today's raptor count included 14 Northern Harriers 35
Red-tailed, 1 Sharp-shinned, 3 Cooper's and 2 Red-shouldered Hawks and
at least 5 Bald Eagles.

Other interesting sightings were 75 Snow Geese, 1 Northern Shrike, a
Red-throated Loon in the lake off Hendrick's Drive and fields full of
Snow Buntings [2500+], Lapland Longspurs [60+] and Horned Larks.

Directions
Hwy 21 runs north from Grand Bend to Bayfield about 0.5 to 1 km inland
from the lake shore. There are about 12 sideroads in this stretch of
highway. You can pull off Hwy 21 onto most of the sideroads and find a
place to park along the side of the road within a few 100 metres of Hwy
21. We prefer Hendricks Road in the south and Crystal Springs Road in
the north. Hendrick's and a couple of other sideroads also provide a
lookout over the lake. Once parked, watch inland to the east and west
towards the shoreline to determine whether the flight lines are close to
the shore or further inland. An almost continuous line of woodland
running north and south about 3 km inland provides a flight path on some
days. Once you've determined the flight line you can move closer to the
shoreline or farther inland. The flight path may change during the day
as well so move accordingly. Today, the flight path was inland in the
morning, near the lake shore in early afternoon and then shifted back
inland around 2:30 p.m. Based on 12 visits in 2007, 2009 and 2010, we
believe that the best winds for a good flight are E to N winds. To
determine the best conditions, check the wind directions for Goderich
and Kincardine to the north which is where the hawks are coming from.
