do you have a separate spotify account, or did you login through
Facebook? If you have a separate account, you will need to go to the
www.spotify.com (yes, the www must be added!)web page to ask for a reset.

Ask the web page designer to not make the edit field read only. This is

Re: [Blind-Computing] Tables on Webpages

2012-11-27 Thread Don Marang
You need to set the settings for Table Titles. In Internet Explorer or
Firefox, press Insert + v for the Quick Settings dialog. Type in the
word "table" into the search box. Now arrow down to "Table Titles", and
hit the Enter key. Press Space to change this value. The default is to
read only properly labeled titles coded into the HTML of the webpage.
If you select rows and columns, it will announce the first row and
column as the titles.
Hit the Enter key again to save the new setting.

Re: [Blind-Computing] I'm looking for the most accessible DVD playing software

2012-11-25 Thread Don Marang
I like VLC Player because you can navigate around the DVD, such as go to
different "chapters" of the DVD. Unfortunately, the titles do not get
dynamically loaded into the menus, instead they are just generic. There
are many hotkeys and they can, with some patience, be reassigned.

All DVD Player software is enhanced since the Convenience OCR was
introduced in JAWS 13.Using this feature, it should be possible to read
and interact with the DVD on-screen menus! You will need to perform the
OCR after each sinulated mouse click.

To be able to hear the free disk space when in the "Computer" folder,
the view needs to be set to Details. This is my default.

When on the desired disk, you can also arrow right to the Free Space

If you are talking about a notification that pops up at the bottom right

I do not know if this applies in this case. There are menu items for
the Desktop to Hide the Icons or gadgets on the Desktop. Press Windows

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading a JPG E-mail message

2012-10-18 Thread Don Marang
If needing this capability is a rare occurrence, you might want to
download and install JAWS 13 or 14 and run it as a 40 minute demo. This
should be adequate to read an odd jpeg email using Convenience OCR.

Re: [Blind-Computing] JAWS and invisible cursor?

2012-10-03 Thread Don Marang
You can not click on objects withh the Invisible cursor! Use the JAWS
cursor instead. The Invisible cursor works just like the JAWS cursor,
except the Invisible cursor does not drag the mouse with it, like the
JAWS cursor. In case you have not figured it out, the JAWS cursor = the
mouse pointer! The Invisible cursor has the advantage of being able to
look around the objects in the window, which may change shape or color
when the mouse just hovers over them.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Changing how item is read and located on the tab

2012-09-30 Thread Don Marang
OK, let's find another way to get to the Customize Notification Icons
dialog, so you can reset their behavior as previously stated. Yet
another shortcut to the dialog previously discussed is to hit the
Windows key to bring up the Start Menu, then the Escape key to land you
on the Start button. Now press Alt + Enter to bring up it's Properties
dialog. If not already on the Taskbar tab, press Control + Tab until
you are. Now Tab several times to get to the Customize... button.

If this fails you, it is a Control Panel and can be found by hitting the
Windows key and start typing "customize icons", without the quotes. I
get as far as "customize i" . before "Customize icons on the Taskbar"
appears.

There is one state in which the "Customize..." button is not available
in this dialog. I think to make it available again, check a checkbox
that says something like "Always show all notification icons in the
Taskbar".

What happens when you press Windows + b? This normally places you on
the Notifications chevron in the Notifications Area. If you can still
press the Applications key in the Notifications Area, and find the
Customize icons option, the following should reverse your changes. Once
the Customize dialog appears, press Shift + Tab a few times until you
reach a "Restore default icon behavior" link.

I do not use an iPhone, but my daughter and wife do. Apple wants you to
use iCloud for these transfers. My daughter, who is an artist, hates
this service! The photos are automatically deleted after 30 days and
Apple starts charging you if you go over your size limit! She now uses
Drop Box to sync her photos on her phone with her Mac. Then she drags
pictures out of Drop Box on a regular basis. She set my wife up this
way as well. I have heard several Tech Journalists use this approach
for Documents and photos from the iPhone and iPad as well. Not sure how
different this is than iCloud? Maybe it is just a lack of trust in
iCloud?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Something I have noticed since running Auslogics boost speed and spybot S and D

2012-07-16 Thread Don Marang
Once you have found viruses on your hard drive, there is no way to be
100% certain that it has been permanently removed! It may recover the
drive to a level that you are comfortable, but it can not be considered
clean. If you are willing to expend so much energy on these tools, you
might find your time better spent formatting the hard drive,
reinstalling XP and all of your applications. I don't like the sound of
that task either, so I make a backup of the disk image once it it has
the system the way I want.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Control Panel for Win/7

2012-06-16 Thread Don Marang
Oh! You are correct. To activate a change in this pop up menu, you
must hit the Enter key after your selection. The Tab key is not enough!

Yes, I think all users of any screen reader should take advantage of all
it's features. Using the JAWS cursor, which moves the mouse pointer
around, is vital for times where critical information is not available
to the default PC cursor, it also helps you visualize how the
application is laid out on the screen.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Control Panel for Win/7

2012-06-16 Thread Don Marang
Another way to select the view in the Control Panel is to press Control
+ e to get to the search box. Now hit Tab once. It should announce
which view is currently active and comment that this is a button. Press
Space to activate the button. A pop up menu will appear with the
choices; Category (default), Large icons, and Small icons. It sounds
like you would prefer small icons. Arrow to your choice and hit Tab to
go to the grid of icons.

This may be easier for those not familiar with using the JAWS cursor.

Re: [Blind-Computing] IE 9 came on computer but I want IE 8

2012-05-30 Thread Don Marang
IE9 works different than IE8. I am not sure how the new methods work
with older versions of JAWS. Instead of a dialog that pops up for
things like security, or approving an add-on, or a file download, it
displays the message of the dialog and the buttons for it's options in
the Information bar. This bar is above the top of the page in the frame
of IE. I hear it is displayed in yellow. Pressing Alt + n will move
focus to the Information bar. This is a Windows shortcut, so it will
still work using other screen readers or older versions of JAWS.
Usually, the buttons can be reached after going to the Information bar
by pressing Tab. If the button says "split", hitting Enter on it will
take that option, other options can be seen by using the Down Arrow. I
do not know how older versions of JAWS treats or handles these buttons.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Problem Loading a Web Site IE 8

2012-05-29 Thread Don Marang
When this site loads, it uses newer styles of HTML coding. JAWS
recognizes this and announces "Application mode". In this mode, it
should act more like a stand-alone application rather than a webpage. I
am not certain this is a benefit in this case. The designers probably
just wanted to make the webpage more interactive.

Press Insert + z to toggle between modes. Using this once will allow
you to access and navigate this page. Note, since it may be very
interactive, if it does not seem to change anything when you activate a
link or button, pressing Insert + Escape after will update the JAWS
buffer.

Re: [Blind-Computing] select excel non adjacent rows and columns

2012-05-25 Thread Don Marang
You might try selecting multiple ranges through the Go to dialog. Press
Control + g or F5 to bring up the Go to dialog. To select rows 147 and
150, type:
147:147, 150:150

To select column A and D, type:
a:a, d:d

Hope this is what you want to accomplish.

Re: [Blind-Computing] configuring a wireless card.

2012-05-12 Thread Don Marang
802.11N is the fastest, followed by G, and B is the slowest.
Surprisingly, there is also an A version of the standard, which is
faster than B, but it's range is very limited (it can not go very far).
The G and N equipment are backward compliant so it will establish the
fastest connection possible. To use N technology, you need both a
router that supports N and your laptop would need a N adapter. Check to
see if both support N wireless. N has not been out many years, your
adapter may only support G.

Re: [Blind-Computing] a strange replacement

2012-04-07 Thread Don Marang
When you select a cell or cells and press Control + 1, a multipage
dialog appears for how to format that selection. Numbers formatting is
the first page. It will open to the last page used previously from this
dialog. You can Shift + Tab to the page control (in your case, "Font")
and use the left or right arrow keys to get back to the Numbers page.
Alternately, using the Control + Tab and Control + Shift + Tab will also
move from one page to another.

Re: [Blind-Computing] How to get rid of these please!Emailing: desktop.ini, PCLECHAL.INI

2012-02-20 Thread Don Marang
These files are hidden system files. Microsoft does not expect you to
delete, move or even see these files. At some point, you must have
changed your settings to show hidden and system files (not recommended).

To hide these files again, do the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer to the folder where these files are located.

2. Press Alt + t, to go to the Tools menu. Use the up arrow once to
the "Folder Options..." item and hit Enter.

3. Press Control + Tab to go to the "View" page. Tab until you get to
the tree view of options.

4. Arrow down to the "Hide protected Operating System files
(recommended)" option.

5. If you want these new settings to be applied to all similar folders,
then press Shift + Tab twice to back up to the "Apply to folders"
button, and hit Space to activate.

6 Continue to hit Tab until you reach the OK vutton and press Space to
close the dialog.

Re: [Blind-Computing] jaws 13 with windows 7 causing laryngitis

2012-02-05 Thread Don Marang
Call it a day, but leave the computer on for a while. Since it is a new
computer and a new Windows installation, there are probably several
background processes that will settle down after a while running idle.
For instance, it might be building the index file of everything on your
hard drive to make search quicker. However, most of these processes
pause while the user is attempting to do something.

If leaving it running a while undisturbed and then rebooting does not
help, you may need new audio drivers from the manufacturer. This is
especially true if using a 64 bit edition of Windows 7.

2012-01-18 Thread Don Marang
No. sorry if I wrote the directions to imply that. Make a selection for
each notification icon. When you hit Tab and it has finished with all
the items it has a few buttons and checkboxes and cycles back to the OK
button. When you reach this activate it with Space or Enter to close
the dialog. You will then need to hit Tab a few times more to reach the
OK button for the Task bar Properties dialog. Use Space or Enter to
close that dialog.

Re: [Blind-Computing] System Tray Items

2012-01-18 Thread Don Marang
You need to select which icons you want to show in the Notification Area.

1. Press the Windows Key, followed by the Escape key. This places
focus on the Start button.

2. Press Alt + Enter to bring up the Taskbar Properties dialog.

3. Hit Tab until you hear Notification Area. If there is a checkbox
for "Always show all Notifications and icons on the Task bar" uncheck it.

4. Hit Tab again to get to the Customize button. Press Space to
activate.

5. Hit Tab to get to the list of Notification items. Each has a combo
box on the right side. Simply use the up and down arrows for the
different hide and show options. If you want it to always show up when
pressing JAWS + F11, select "Show icon and notification".

6. Press Tab to get to the next item. When done, continue to press Tab
to the OK button. Again, press Tab to the OK button.

Now the notifications should work as expected! Additionally, you should
not be bothered by notifications you do not want. Note, this does not
disable or stop them from working.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Software for converting audio files into text/doc

2011-12-01 Thread Don Marang
You do realize how hard this task can be. It requires a program that
can transcribe the speaker. There are programs like Dragon Naturally
Speaking that do this fairly well. However, it requires the speaker to
talk at a slow rate and speak all punctuation, which is normal for
dictation. It also requires the speaker to train the Dragon! (Which is
a cute Movie and NLS book)

Google Voice may be a free method of providing dictation, but as far as
I know you would need to leave the audio of the phone while leaving
yourself a voice mail. It will send you the text as an email. This is
far from perfect as well.

If you possibly can, get the file in a readable format.

I think you will want to use VLC Media Player instead. In the Audio

Unfortunately, the tracks are probably not labeled. As I remember,
there is also a hotkey, Control + l, to cycle between all of the

On Friday, I spilled a large amount of water on my phone. For some
strange reason, it didn't like that. It's time to bury this phone and

My question is what types of phones are out there that have the
following qualities.

1. My contract is with A T& T, so need a phone that will work with
that service provider.

2. I need a phone that is very blind friendly to use such as buttons
that are pretty easy to distinguish apart from each other and a phone
that has a "voice" that is easy to understand.

3. I am thinking about getting a phone that will allow me to text and
serf the web. I've never had a phone that does that ... I've just had
this phone that I use to make and receive calls on.

In the past, A T& T has made some of their phones available at a

I hope this email isn't too vague about what I want.

Does it really need to be removed? Couldn't it just be disabled? This
can be accomplished by going to the View menu, arrow down to the
Toolbars entry, arrow right and then arrow down to the WinAmp menu
item. Most likely there is a check mark in front. Hitting Enter should
disable this Toolbar. If you look at the Toolbar submenu again, the
WinAmp menu item will be unchecked.

how to read the information.

read the info off of the slides by:
1. Using TAB to move from object to object on a single slide.
2. If you press enter, you will be able to edit the contents of that
object. You do not have a need to do this when just reading the
information. If you accidently press enter, just press Escape to get
out of the editing mode of that object.
3. Use Page up to move forward to the next slide and Page Down to
move back a slide.

Reading the information in the outline:
1. There is a way to set the pane on the left side of the screen to
display the contents of the slide show in the outline view. Off of
the top of my head, I do not remember how to do this in PowerPoint
2007.
2. Use F6 to move from pane to pane until you get to the Outline pane.
3. Use your JAWS reading and navigation commands to move through and
read the information.

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Is Jaws 13 OCR working?, from Mark

Yes. It is excellent! I use it all of the time with VMware. If a
guest OS loses speech or I am setting up a new Virtual Machine with an
OS that does not have an accesible installer it is indispensible!

I have also used it for Video overlay type applications, which were
previously totally inaccessible, like DIRECTV2PC.

However, Ihave not had much luck with most Flash objects.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Boot Order Problem

The boot order is in the BIOS setup. This is started by pressing a
certain key while starting the computer. It is different keys depending
on the manufacturer. You will need sighted help for this. It defines
the order in which it will look for bootable devices. Tell your
technician to move the internal hard disk before USB devices. If you
want to ve able to boot from the CD/DVD drive, it would need to be
before the internal hard drive.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Accessible online backup solutions with JAWS

I use Carbonite on one of my computers. I have found it very
accessible. Most actions are done to files or folders via the
applications menu. General status is through a web page. The
installation is a breeze! Sighted users can quickly look at their files
and folders in Windows Explorer and see their backup status according to
the color. We would need to use the applications key on each to
determine it's backup status.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Lost wireless connection

2011-09-03 Thread Don Marang
I think you will need to perform a factory reset. This will restore the
original login, which for Linksys, is no username and admin as the
password. As I recall, Linksys routers will have a small hole for the
factory reset button. It will require someone to unbend a paperclip and
insert into the hole to press the button. I assume it is located on the
back of the router. After it restarts, you will need to login and
change the password and make all of the settings changes you did
originally. When configuration is complete, I save the settings from
the Administration link. This way, if I screw up the settings at a
later date or need to perform a factory reset, it can be restored quickly.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how do you perform a drive backup usingKaren'sreplicator

2011-09-03 Thread Don Marang
Karen's Replicator jobs are primarily based upon folders. You can
identify a folder on your internal hard disk, like "My Documents", as
the source. Then you would specify a folder on your external drive
where to keep this replication. It is possible to limit or specific
file types to backup, but the default is to replicate all files and
folders in the source folder. If you keep data in other locations on
your computer, just add another job. This may be settings for certain
applications. I backup my JAWS settings, which includes all user
scripts, every night.

First of all Karan's replicator is mainly for backing up your data files
which can be anything other than programs, but it mostly refers to
emails,

word processor files and other such documents.

Second of all my tutorial for Image For Windows on the audio page

backing up and restoring an entire hard drive and not just the data

Karen's Replicator is suitable for backing up files and settings, not an
entire hard drive. To back up an entire hard drive, including the OS
and

all programs so that you can restore it in the event of a catastrophic
failure, you need a disk imaging program like Image for Windows or
Paragon
Backup and Recovery. The problem with all imaging programs is that
there is

no way to reliably perform the recovery procedure without sighted help
because there is no speech accompanying the boot CD, which all these
programs require. There is an audio tutorial on the JAWS Users audio
page
in which David describes how to create an image backup of a data
partition

on a pair of DVD's using Image for Windows and then restore it without
speech, but I have not heard of anyone using this technique to
successfully
backup and restore an entire hard drive, which would potentially
require a

lot more DVD's.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Managing notes and course material

2011-08-31 Thread Don Marang
Actually, PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It was designed to
provide an electronic format that would look identical to the original
paper layout in every respect. Back when it was first created, it was
the only way to get the exact look of the page on any platform. The
text of the page was added later as a search feature. It has expanded
to open this text up for accessibility and now also faithfully represent
the structure of the document, such as tables and headings as well. One
of the reasons users (usually corporations) needed such a format to
distribute documentation. Therefore, protecting documents from change
and signatures for integrity were there early on.

Hello All,

I am going to be taking a training later this week in which I have been
given the very large document of course materials in an accessible PDF.
The
course instructor quickly moves through the material sequentially but
only
talks about specific items in the material that are either new, or best
support the topic being discussed. I would love to be able to follow
along
in the PDF and then be able to make notes that correspond to the item
the

required
to attend each year, so in the past I've tried following along in the
PDF
and then ALT+TAB to write notes in the open Word doc, and I've also
tried
not even bothering with the PDF and just taking notes in the Word doc.
The
problem is that I can't match up my notes with the information in the
course
material. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can read through the info
in
the PDF and be able to take notes without leaving the program displaying
the
PDF. I've got access to a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with JAWS 11 and 12,
a
Verizon iPhone and an iPad first generation. I do not have a Bluetooth
keyboard for my i-devices, but if that is all I am missing to make some
app
work, a trip to the apple store could be worked out.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The Real Speak Solo Direct voices are not capable of indicating a

I get the MAC (*Media Access Control or *physical address) addresses
directly from the router's web interface. If you can find a button for
DHCP Table, it will show a table of all currently connected devices. On
my latest router, I found this information by pressing the DHCP
Reservation button. The advantages of this are that you can cut and
paste addresses (the table shows up in a new window), and it provides
all currently connected devices. Devices can be Android phones, Roku
boxes, PlayStation3, PCs, Mac, and any other connected devices. Some of
these, I would not know any way how to find their MAC address. If you
turn MAC filtering on, I would not want my DirecTV DVR not to be able to

Re: [Blind-Computing] what to do when USB devices won't recognize

2011-08-05 Thread Don Marang
I have read and it is my experience that external hard drives,
especially powered external hard drives, should be connected to their
own port. I think this is due to both power and data transfer rates.
Putting a hard drive on a hub with any other device will slow down the
transfer rate at best. Ideally, a powered USB device should be
connected directly. If powered devices, like printers and scanners,
must be connected d to a hub, it is better if it is a powered hub. Hubs
work best for devices like keyboards and mice.

Thank you guys for your help.
Now, I have a related question. The hub does have a power cord, but it
didn't start giving me trouble even when it wasn't plugged into the
wall until today when I tried to plug my headphones into it. I asked
this same question on another list and someone responded back by
saying that plugging an external drive and a pair of headphones into
the same hub is a bad idea. Why would that be? I thought the point of
a hub was so that you could plug multiple devices into it at once and
not have to worry.

Hi Desiree,

Is this USB Hub only plug into the computer to get its power or, is it a
powered USB Hub and plug into a wall outlet socket to have AC / 120 volt

providing enough power to the Hub to sufficiently run the external drive.
Have you tried plugging the 2nd external drive into a USB port by itself to
see if it will work that way? Hope you get this issue figured out! I know
just how frustrating it can be when things quit working for no explainable
reason. Take care.

There are several ways to move from tab to tab in the same browser
window. Control + Tab and Control + Shift + Tab rotate through the
open tabs. Control + 1, Control +2... should open that specific tab.
These are very useful if JAWS loses focus. For instance, Control + 1
returns focus to the first opened web page. My favorite is the Quick
Tabs key, Control + Shift + q. I prefer this because it brings up a
context menu of the open tabs, with the currently being viewed tab
checked and the title for each.

Re: [Blind-Computing] System Backups

2011-07-29 Thread Don Marang
It is a small utility, which is completely accessible. It efficiently
makes a copy of a folder (including all suvfolders, if desired) to
another folder. It provides many different filtering options and a
scheduled time, which is referred to as a job. You can create as many
jobs as you want. It only copies files that change and I have never
noticed any slowdown of my computer when it kicks in.

I use it's tagging feature to create daily archives of a few critical
folders. This particular tag method allows me to go back to a older
version based on the day of the month.

Job name: Finance
Source location: C:\Users\Don\Documents\Finance\
Destination location:
C:\Users\Don\Documents\BackupVersioning\Finance\Day\

This particular job would create 31 different copies of this folder with
the replaced by the day of the month. These folders do not contain
a large number of files and disk space is cheap. The destination folder
can be anywhere on your home network. Later in the night I have it copy
all of my data to a different computer in my house. It works flawlessly!

Actually, cloud backup services like Carbonite only back up your
data. They do not backup your system or applications. I suppose it
is possible to force it to back up everything on the disk, but it is
not really designed for that. You even need to tell it to backup
large files, like Videos, by including those folders and telling it
to backup that file type.

Yes, as far as I can tell, Carbonite is 100% accessible using JAWS.

DropBox as previously stated, is a great way to backup critical data
for free for up to 2 GB. I also use Karen's Backup to automatically
make copies of critical folders to other computers in the house.

To occasionally. backup all of my system files, applications,
settings, and data I use a disk image tool. There are probably a few
that work, but I use Image for Windows. If you need or want a fast
way to recover from a hard disk crash or other major problem, a disk
image is the way to go. Unfortunately, this is not automatic and
should be done before major changes to your system and after
installing and configuring new software, in order to have an disk
image of a stable system. One reason I like Image for Windows is
that it can run in the background while you continue to work.

Re: [Blind-Computing] System Backups

2011-07-29 Thread Don Marang
Dave has some good audio tutorials on the jaws-users site which backup
to DVDs. It is possible to backup a System partition to a bigger
partition. I choose to backup all internal partitions to an external
drive. This is a great option for me because I often experiment often
and reconfigure my internal drive. I now have a dual boot of Windows 7
64 bit and Vinux 3.2.1. I have several backups of stable systems, such
as just after I installed my normal applications just after I bought the
computer, just before I set up a dual boot and a recent backup of a
stable dual boot system. If needed I can quickly go back to any of
these configurations. Not all users need this many backups, unless they
want to backup each month and keep several backups around.

The difficult part of this program is that to restore a disk image
backup you need to boot from something other than the internal
partition. Dave's tutorial has Image for Windows make the first backup
disk bootable. There is no speech, but the amount of keys to use
without verbal feedback is very limited. I think some have used their
tools to create a minimal Windows bootable disk with speech using
difficult procedures. I had no luck with this. I prefer to use Vinux
installed on a USB Flash drive and install Image for Linux on it. That
way, I have a small device that provides speech at startup and can use
their crude version of the application to start the backup from the
external drive. Linux also provides several good repair and recovery
tools as a bonus. To boot from the USB Flash drive on my system,
without changing the BIOS, requires pressing F12 during startup. This
brings up a simple boot menu of devices to boot to. On my system, I
need to then press the Down Arrow twice and hit Enter.

Press Tab until you get to the Search edit box or press Control + e to
get there. Enter ".m4a", without the quotes. I hit Enter at this

until you get back to the list view. Now the list should be much
smaller and only contain files with that extension. If you want, you
can select all of these .m4a files with Control + a, and delete them by

were about 150 files total in that folder, and I wanted to delete all
files with the extension .m4a and leave the other files in place with
their extension called, .mp3.

Other than using the ctrl plus space bar.
Can this be done?
Thank you for your help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] strange behavior with Internet Explorer and frames

2011-07-14 Thread Don Marang
They might just have JAWS not announcing the frames. Try going to the
"Adjust JAWS Options" dialog by pressing Insert + v. Arrow down or keep
hitting the f key until you get to "Frames Start and End". If it does
not report that it is on, hit Space until it does. Arrow down to the
next option, "Inline Frames". Again, hit the Space key until it reports
that it is on.

If this works, it can be set permanently by pressing insert + 6 to bring
up the old JAWS Settings Manager. These options should be on the Header
and Frames tab of the HTML Settings. (Not currently running JAWS 11)

Neither Security Essentials or Windows Update should ever eat up 20 GB
of disk space! You have something going on. Calculate the used and
free space compared to the entire drive, My guess is that the drive may
be failing and automatically blocking out bad sectors. This effectively
continuously makes the drive smaller as it gets worse. If this is the
case, get the data off of it and replace the drive.

I don't understand how anybody with sight can realistically use JAWS.
Most users primarily use the mouse, and causes all sorts of difficulties

I don't blame you for being careful when it comes to letting just
anybody use your computer. Sometimes you even have to be careful
with some family members. One time I had a sighted nephew work on

Re: [Blind-Computing] connecting musical keyboards to a computer and what software is accessible?

2011-05-29 Thread Don Marang
I have not heard of musical USB keyboards. I guess they could exist to
simply act as an analog to digital converter, just like turntables with
an USB connection.

Most likely, you are thinking of a different type of interface, called
MIDI, which stands for Musical Instrument Device Interconnect. Each
note on the keyboard sends a electronic message from the keyboard to
other devices. More expensive keyboards capture the intensity (how hard
the key was pressed) as well as the note. It can also be used, with a
separate MIDI connector, as an output of the computer back to the
musical keyboard. This could be used to playback music previously
captured from the keyboard, perhaps slightly modified. Many bands
heavily use this interface between keyboards, sequencers, drum machines,
and so on. A real musician can step in here and elaborate. Computers
can be attached to these devices to perform many tasks. There is
software to capture what you play on the keyboard, to playback, mix with
other sources and manipulate. The options are endless. Software can
replace most functions of an entire studio or control instruments during
a live performance. I even heard of software that could generate sheet
music of what was being played on the keyboard. You would need hardware
that provides these MIDI connectors. I used to have a SoundBlaster card
that had these connectors. They probably have many different external
boxes that connect to your computer by USB and converts to MIDI
signals. I guess the musical keyboard manufacturers could build such an
interface into the keyboard and provide a cheaper, more convenient
connector. I have not heard of such a keyboard. I even had such a
converter box for my Commodore 64! That was confusing because the MIDI
connectors are identical to the serial cable used by the hard drive as I
recall. Again, those more musically talented can recommend software
once they get a better idea what you would like to do.

I'm afraid that you may have to get a powered hub, or powered device to plug
into that cable, otherwise the cable on it's own will not have enough power
to power what ever device you plug into it.

I'm not exactly sure what you can do to fix this problem except to say that
you will have to increase the power coming out of your USB port, or nothing
will happen.

I thought it might be like a WI-Fi connection, where you can connect

again, I'm not sure what you will need to fix this problem.

Sorry about that.

It should be possible to manage your DirecTV DVR from your iPhone. I
think the app is free in the Apple App Store.

The mobile site to schedule the DVR from a PC in a IE or Firefox used to
be my favorite method. However, it no longer allows access from a PC.
The guide on the main site uses a lot of Flash and is not accessible.
This was not true until this year. I have been a customer since 1995
and they have heard plenty from me recently.

To browse through the TV listings, I use the TitanTV.com site. It is
very customizable allowing you to select provider or providers, favorite
channels, font size, what info is displayed, and much more. The guide
can view up to 6 hours in a grid contained in a true html table. This
means that the table navigation keys for JAWS or orca easily let you
move through the channels (up and down), and through the time slots
(left and right). Times and channel names are naturally announced as
the table headings.

I used to have a JAWS Script that helped schedule a recording on the DVR
from the TitanTV grid, but until DirecTV provides a website where I can
get to the correct date, time and channel, I can not get this to work
again.

Hi everyone,

I know that perhaps this isn't a subject that directly deals with
this list,
but this is also a list made up of blind people who always help one
another

out with new things.

So, here's the deal.

I just got a great deal on phone, Internet, and TV. The TV is with
DirectTV
and part of that comes with a DVR. With the latest technological
advances,
is it possible for a totally blind person like myself to use a DVR
with any

sort of ease?

I know that some can be managed via a computer, and if that's the
case, how

well does something like that work with JAWS? Does anyone know anything
about this? What about an IPhone? Does anyone know about that?

If this is the case, then I'll keep the DVR. If not, then it probably
doesn't make sense to have it, does it?

Please share your thoughts either on or off list.

I apologize for the subject matter.

think the app is free in the Apple App Store.

I used to have a JAWS Script that helped schedule a recording on the DVR
from the TitanTV grid, but until DirecTV provides a website where I can
get to the correct date, time and channel, I can not get this to work
again.

Asunto: Question on using DVR

Hi everyone,

I know that perhaps this isn't a subject that directly deals with this list,
but this is also a list made up of blind people who always help one another
out with new things.

So, here's the deal.

I just got a great deal on phone, Internet, and TV. The TV is with DirectTV
and part of that comes with a DVR. With the latest technological advances,
is it possible for a totally blind person like myself to use a DVR with any
sort of ease?

I know that some can be managed via a computer, and if that's the case, how
well does something like that work with JAWS? Does anyone know anything
about this? What about an IPhone? Does anyone know about that?

If this is the case, then I'll keep the DVR. If not, then it probably
doesn't make sense to have it, does it?

Please share your thoughts either on or off list.

I apologize for the subject matter.

One good way to return the snappiness to Windows is to format the hard

work, but probably not as time consuming as attempting to tweak a slow

Hello everyone.

Recently I've noticed that my Acer machine, an old workhorse from 2007
running Windows XP and Jaws 11.0, , takes a really long time to boot
up. I can expect to wait about three minutes for this process to
happen, and that seems quite unnecessary. I'd like to keep this thing
going for as long as possible, and I've managed to eliminate a number
of unnecessary processes, services, etc, and recently with the help of
CCleaner removed a bunch of junk from my system which seems to have
resulted in an appreciable increase in speed. The bootup process still
seems to take an age, though, and it's a little frustrating to me that
I can't see what's going on at bootup to determine what might be
making it so sluggish. My work machine is also running XP, isn't much
newer than this system, has a bunch of network drive/connections to
establish and yet still boots in thirty seconds or less. I know
there's a "step by step" bootup option you can enable so that you can
see each step in the boot process as it happens and select whether you
want to run this or that process, but that doesn't do me a lot of good
as Jaws is always one of the last things to run. So, is there any way
of making a bootlog that has the same information which I can read in
a textfile? How about any tweaks or suggestions users here might have?
I've found a number of useful sites, including process libraries that
explain the function of various system and non-essential processes
that might load at startup, but I'm wondering if anybody here might
have any useful info to pass along. In addition to increasing bootup
speed, I'm also keen on ways I might be able to decrease the general
load on my CPU to make the system run a little more smoothly. I am
certainly aware of the need to do defragmentations on the hard drive,
but maybe the one that comes with Windows isn't the best solution out
there? I've heard this from other folks, but I have no idea what
programme i ought to use for this as I've always used the native
Windows defrag. How about msconfig? I know many people don't use it,
preferring a third party alternative...what of folks on the list here?

Thanks!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Please! Help big problem with Adobe reader9.

2011-04-29 Thread Don Marang
When you say sometimes JAWS can read the document and sometimes it
can't, does this refer to the same exact file on your hard drive? What
you describe is what happens when the PDF file contains pages that have
been scanned into a computer. Sighted users have no problem reading the
page, but JAWS says it is an empty document. This means these pages are
just images. To read this with a screen reader, it will first need to
have Optical Character Recognition (OCR) performed on the document.

Re: [Blind-Computing] moving jaws from one computer to another;

2011-04-16 Thread Don Marang
Is your computer directly connected to the DSL modem or is there a home
router between them? The home router can have wireless capabilities or
just provide multiple wired Ethernet connections or both. Most, even
the low cost routers include wireless.

If you do not have a router, the AT&T software would be required. The
connection to the DSL modem uses the same type of Ethernet cable, but
talks with a different protocol. It uses PPOE, which stands for Point
to Point Over Ethernet. When installing a router, you must tell it you
are wanting it to use PPOE to the modem and provide your account name /
password to your ISP account. If you do not have a router, you must use
their software to talk to the modem and log in.

I recommend a router for many reasons, including security!

On the other hand, you better be 100% sure you want to literally

click on a folder and tell it to do something like start a command

use the change directory - cd - commands to get there.

Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching

2011-03-21 Thread Don Marang
Many of the problems around this technology is the complexity of the
vocabulary desired. The less commands you want to recognize, the better
the accuracy. From a practical standpoint I always had problems with
Dragon while taking dictation or recognizing commands and controlling
the computer because of family interruptions or background noise. It
can give you strange results and take longer due to undoing and
editing! It was kind of cool, but very frustrating!

Recently, several mainstream devices have come closer to your ideals.
There is the Ford in car electronics which uses voice control of the
audio, temperature read email from your bluetooth phone, or send a text
message through your phone, and so on for a hands free experience. It
sounds pretty imprressive! It almost makes me want to drive. It is
even in their low end Focus cars. Smart phones are surprisingly getting
pretty good at this as well I hear. Google has many projects that allow
voice input and recognition for search and translating voice mails to
text emails on Android phones. Most of the heavy processing in these
cases is performed on their servers.

Re: [Blind-Computing] accessing a windows 7 system over a network

2011-03-03 Thread Don Marang
Is it asking if you to enter a password for the Home network? Microsoft
thinks they have a trademark or copyright on the term Home Network. It is a
feature that allows you to easily share files in a library to be shared
across your network. Any folder in any location, internal, external, or
remote can be added to a library "folder", such as Music. It only works
between Windows 7 computers connected through your home router. If you only
have one Windows 7 computer, just find the Home Network Control Panel and
disable this feature. Otherwise, in the Control Panel, set a new password
on the first computer, then join the Home Network, again through this
Control Panel, using the same password. There is no username.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.

2011-02-24 Thread Don Marang
Microsoft used to provide a free PowerTool for XP called TweakUI. It had
many registry hacks. One of the hacks allowed these strings that worked
exactly the same way. I had about 10 such strings defined for Google News,
Yellow Pages, and so on. I still have the registry change file around. It
does require that the search term becomes part of the URL, which is being
used less often now for form submittal. I wish they were directly available
in IE. I am glad to see Firefox has adopted this feature!

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.

Maybe folks here already know about this, but I found it quite
interesting. I haven't figured out if you could do this in Internet
Explorer yet, but I've been experimenting with keyword browsing in
FireFox.

You can create a keyword for a web site, then instead of either typing the
URL into the address bar, or searching through your book marks, you just
type the keyword into the address bar.

More importantly, you can adjust the URL in the book mark and add a
variable into it. Let me give an example.

I use www.ninjawords.com because I can't spell to save my life, and
sometimes the spell checker doesn't even know what I am talking about.
NinjaWords seems pretty good at figuring out what I meant to spell, and it
is simply a really fast front-end to wiktionary.

Anyway, I can set up a keyword, n, with a URL of www.ninjawords.com/%s
Then I I can open FireFox, type:

n sprocket

And it immediately brings me to the definition page for sprocket. Saves
me the time of going to the web page, then typing sprocket into the search
field and hitting enter.

You can set up keywords for all kinds of sites that take inputs, like
google maps, or google calendar. So, if you use google calendar, you
could have a keyword, say, cal, setup and then you could just open FireFox
and type:

cal dinner with Dave and Patty on Friday at 6:00 at their house.

Poof, I've just entered that event in my google calendar.

www.lifehacker.com had a great article about this, and although I've had
to stumble my way through setting up a couple of these key words, it seems
pretty useful so far.

Does anyone know if this is possible in IE? Not really sure if I care as
FireFox is very slowly drawing me in. And IE has been pissing me off
recently. But a lot of people prefer IE, so just thought it would be
helpful to them if someone knew about keyword browsing there.

Of course, maybe I am way far behind the times, and everyone has been
doing this for the last couple of years.

2011-02-20 Thread Don Marang
I do not think the JAWS directories are that large, relatively speaking.
However, instead of attempting to type in the exception, let the program do
it for you. In the settings page, Tab past the exclusion list to the
"Browse..." button and press Space. It should let you browse through the
file system tree. There are checkboxes in front of each item. I am not
sure what this is because each is checked by default. I thought unchecking
the box would add it as an exception. It would not let me uncheck any
boxes. Perhaps that is because it was currently performing a full scan?
Just pressing Enter on a directory (folder) or file will place that entry in
the exceptions edit box. Now Tab to the Add button and activate it.

You can type in the entries manually, but you must be exact and follow the
same capitalization and spaces.

In MSSE, if you go to the Home tab and tab over to Settings, you will find
a list. In this list there are a couple of items dealing with exclusions.
I've heard that JAWS directory which is quite large could be excluded,
thus speeding up the scan time. What I'm not sure of is exactly what to
type in this field to have JAWS directory not scanned. If anyone has done
this, I would appreciate learning exactly what they typed here.

Thanks.

I have never seen this behavior either. Perhaps it is scanning. Normally
this is not noticeable. I think it could slow down considerably if it is
detecting dangerous files. Within MSE, Tab to the Home Tab Control and use
the Right Arrow to the History page. Tab once to the radio buttons and
arrow up to all detected. Tab one more time to the list of detected harmful
items it has found. It might quietly been quarantining half of your hard
drive!

Re: [Blind-Computing] Free Internet Fax Service

2011-02-18 Thread Don Marang
I do not use any of these services anymore. I now use the fax feature of my
betwork printer. I used one of these services several years ago. I had not
seen any that are free recently.

Typically, these free on-line fax services have a limit of outgoing faxes
before they charge any fees. There big sell is to provide an incoming fax
service where people send you a fax by calling their fax number associated
with your account. They automatically email you with an image of the fax
attached or a link to their website to view the fax image. This is an
attractive way to handle incoming faxes if necessary. The trick here is to
find a service to perform OCR on the image to provide readable text or
perform OCR on your computer.

I just submitted a new free OCR package for Vinux this morning, which now
handles all image types, including PDF and Postscript.

Hi gang. Has anyone used one of the free Internet fax services like
Myfax.com/free to send faxes over the Internet? I recently received a
form that had to be filled out and signed and was thinking of scanning it
with Open Book, saving it as a .tif file, and sending it to the recipient
using the free Myfax.com service. will this work, or is this one of
those too good to be true deals? This seems like a good option for
occasional faxing. It seems to have a very simple interface and would

send faxes only once in a great while. Thanks for any feedback.
