Seems like some testing centres have different views on life.

I'm getting ready to sign up for a CIPT (Cisco IP Telephony) course from
Telcordia Training and Education Ctr in Chicago. Before I fly all the way
from Los Angeles to take it I was hoping to get some feedback from you fine
folks. I'm one test short of my CCNP and have a technical background and I
hope to see the system in action and experience the implementation, not just
get an advertising dog-and-pony.

Here are my questions:
*   Is the class worthwhile?
* Has anybody had experience with this trainer?
* Is there anything I simply must see in Chicago while I'm there? :-)

Hey Mike- there's not a lot you can ever do with just one router. Cable

modems are great... I get 2 Megs most of the time discourage my
neighbors from joining as often as I get a chance to :-) Cable modem
systems are a little strange. My Comcast system is fiber (digital) to a

sidewalk box (in my neighborhood), analog into house, then it hits the
cable modem converts back to digital. So for me a lot of other people,
a router is only something you can add after the cable modem ( not in
place of). The best bang for the buck, is a Cisco 3000 (3101) dual
Ethernet router. They run about $250 on Ebay for another "approx." $200

(is what it has cost me to upgrade my 3000's) you can add new boot ROM's,

16 Megs of RAM, 8 Megs of FLASH, compress (almost any IOS Cisco has out)

onto that 8 Megs of FLASH. This would allow you to encrypt or tunnel to

another router with VPN IOS, setup a firewall or an access list to take

logs, maybe good with NAT PAT...

Good Luck !!!

slightly OT - upgrading a cisco pro 2500 to regular 2500 IOS

2000-08-26 Thread Neil Schneider

I bought a cisco pro 2501 to study for my CCNA/CCNP. According to the IOS
release notes this can be upgraded to run the regular 2500 IOS. After
following the instructions in the release notes I have not been able to do
this. Has anyone had experience with this process? The upgrade file
included on the feature pack CD does not exactly match the name given in the
instructions, and it seems to be trying to go the other way, from regular
2500 TO ciscopro 2500
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Router for play @ home

2000-08-26 Thread Kevin Wigle

It depends (:-)) on just what you're asking.

If you're asking if you can use your 25xx routers and connect them to the
cable/dsl modem - if dsl is better than cable

then, most DSL providers are DHCP, so the 25xx could not connect directly to
the cable/dsl as the address may change. Well you could do this but you
would have to find out what the address was and then change the router
interface. Really a bother.

In Canada, Rogers#Home Cable trys to keep you static - but with no
guarantees. I've had the same address for about 18 months now. For a long
time I had a 2509 directly connected to the cable modem.

if you're asking if the 25xx will connect directly to the provider replacing
the cable/dsl router - then no, that won't happen.

But, if you put a Internet Appliance between them, say a Linksys Firewall,
(did I say I love mine!!!) then the FW negotiates with the cable/dsl on the
WAN side and you use 192.168.x.x on the inside and then the 25xx address
stays the same, no muss - no fuss.

So it depends on just where your question is going.

dividing up the same subnet on 2 diff segments

address the first router E0 Interface with 10.1.1.1 to 10.1.1.126 and the
second router E0 with the second half 10.1.1.127 to 10.1.1.254 ok. Now I want
to be able to ping each others gateway.
Can I or should I be able to ping each others gateway and have one flat
segment between 2 router Ethernet segments. Do I need to bridge this? I know
this can be done, I was in class a while ago and my teacher explain to me how
this would work, but it was a long time ago.

 Hi

I have a question? I have two routers okay and I have routing turned on
both of them (EIGRP). lets say I want to use 10.1.1.0 and I want to be able
to to split this subnet into two networks, I know you can use IP subnet-zero
to do this,

CL: well, not exactly. IP subnet-zero allows the router to work with the all
zero subnet. It is not necessarily related to splitting a 24 bit prefix into
two 25 bit prefixes. There is something of a subtle distinction to be made
here.

but I want to address the first router E0 Interface with 10.1.1.1
to 10.1.1.126 and the second router E0 with the second half 10.1.1.127 to
10.1.1.254 ok.

CL: yes. Can be done do you know the mask to use?

Now I want to be able to ping each others gateway.

CL: nothing stopping you :-

Can I or should I be able to ping each others gateway and have one flat
segment between 2 router Ethernet segment. Do I need to bridge this? these
two segments together.

CL: now we are getting into a bit of subtlety here. When you configure the
router ethernet port with an IP address you give it a single host number,
which must be unique. So, the command IP address 10.1.1.1 25.255.255.128
defines that interface. It does NOT specify a range of addresses controlled
by that interface, which is what I think you may be thinking. Rather, it
becomes the information which the configured routing protocol uses to
determine the location of a particular network ( or subnet, or range of
addresses, if you will )

So if you have configured your two routers correctly, and the ethernet ports
on each indicates a proper and unique subnet, the routing protocols will
advertise that information, and the routing tables of each router will
contain that information, subject to rules about VLSM and classful/classless
routing which may or may not apply.

Bridging is used to extend LAN segments, and as a primitive means of network
segmentation. Bridging does NOT imply different prefixes, or different
network masks. Rather, it implies more than one segment, all of which
contain hosts that are part of the same subnet.

Routing and bridging are two entirely different things, and are used for
different reasons in a network.

Does this help?

Chuck

RE: RSM's on cat 5k

2000-08-26 Thread Chuck Larrieu

OK, I did a quick look on CCO

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios113ed/rn113m/rn1
13mnt.htm

there are some known issues with IOS 11.3 on the RSM module.

I did not find any in my quick look at 12.x.

Again, this is the kind of thing that can be researched. I find that the
recent CCO reorganization has in general yielded some nice improvements in
search results.

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/ibld/view.pl?i=supportm=GUEST

or maybe http://www.cisco.com/tac/ which redirects you anyway.

As with anything Cisco, your best bet is to read the release notes for your
hardware and IOS code.

what he probably meant, that it is very easy to blow up a router with
debug. Its important to use access lists when using alot of the debug
commands, especially if there is alot of traffic going thru the
box. "debug ip packet" for example, is a very bad idea without access
lists.

So for me a lot of other
 people,
a router is only something you can add after the cable modem ( not in

  Good Luck !!!

just to learn the ios and play around with. I am working on my CCNA, and

2000-08-26 Thread Brian

what you have below is fine, except be advised routerB's address is on a
network boundry, so change it too 10.1.1.129, then you'll be ok. As long
as these are both on the same physical network, then yes you will be able
to ping.

It's been a while since I had anything to do with 56K. My recollection is
that even with frame relay, a single channel 56K line requires a 56K CSU. It

 Hi All...

Doing the normal thing here, posting after testing.

I completed the Routing 2.0 test is AM, making me a mixed 1.0/2.0 CCNP (as
if it matters what version a test is). I was surprised by two things, no
command line questions, and the number of questions on the "lesser"
routing
protocols. Otherwise it was exactly as advertised. Much better written
than
the 1.0 tests I have done, the test writer passed high school English!

To give all an idea (since someone will ask) of what I have done to
prep...

 1) About 10 years in IT, the last 5 (give or take a few months) dealing
with
systems on the Internet and the networks that connect them to it. The last
year or so, strictly networking on Cisco gear LAN/WAN.

 2) Got the Cisco CCNP library, good set of books supplemented with Doyle,
 Halbbli (SP), and Caslow.

 3) Home lab, 3 - 25xx, 1924-en, 4500M, 3102, 2621, 2611. I consider my
home
lab and my work environment the most beneficial of all in my passing the
CCNP tests. Now I guess it's time to get serious about the home lab with
CCIE just around the corner. Time for the big Cat and a LS something and
 some VoX VICs.

 4) HANDS ON! This kind of goes with #3, but thought it deserved a separate
line. There are certainly people out there that can and do pass all four
of
these tests without ever touching a router or switch, but there are not
many
that will remember how to configure a multi area OSPF network a year
later,
or how to setup a VLAN and ISL on a Cat. There is no substitute for hands
on
 daily use of the equipment.

 5) One of the best places, Group Study! I may not post a lot here, but I
do
take the time to read the list/posts at least once a day. I have found no
end of knowledge, encouragement, and humor here, which makes this long
trek
 a fun and enjoyable one.

 6) I have never looked at the CCNP tests/study as anything more than a
means
to prepare for the CCIE R/S written and lab. I turned a corner in my study
a
couple of weeks ago, the CCIE lab no longer looks like a big bad monster
that one narrowly escapes. I look forward to the lab now, I know I know
the
subject matter, now it is just a matter of getting my hands on time up so
that I can configure just about anything in my sleep and as fast as
 possible.

I look forward to the next several months as I prep for the big one,
sharing
my knowledge and insight and more importantly gaining from the vast amount
of knowledge that flows here day in and day out, and having a good laugh
with the list from time to time. Thanks to one and all rather you knew you
 were helping or not.

There is a well known and well documented danger in issuing a debug all

RE: Exam 350-001, I'm so pissed!

2000-08-26 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

Many have said that CertificationZone's CCIE Prep exam is more difficult than the
actual exam. Why don't you give CZ's exam a try, and see how you do? It'll give you
a good perspective as to the fairness in weighting on Cisco's exam which will perhaps
help you put things into perspective. If you do extremely well on CertificationZone's
exam, then you've likely got reason to be miffed. If however you score poorly... then
some sharpening of your skills is definitely required.

The most valuable aspect of CertificationZone's exam however, is that it will likely
point out some trouble spots and weak points in your skill set. It'll give you a
nudge in the right direction, and will let you know exactly which areas you need to
focus on for when you challenge the exam again.

shannon,

you bring up a good point. All the cisco tests make you take the
questionairre in the beginning (as you of course know), and a disclaimer
says that your final score will depend on how you answer that
questionaire. I am curious to as to what effect the questionaire has on
the actual score and how it is calculated.

Re: Exam 350-001, I'm so pissed!

2000-08-26 Thread Adrian Chew

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I actually know. Those
people who've approached certification in the past using exam cram and
Transcender and other exam preparation tools to pass aren't going to learn
nearly as much as those who slog through the topics and understand the
concepts. Seen far too many 'paper' MCSEs and sadly, all the paper-based
Cisco certifications are getting that way these days.

If you asked me, I say let CCNAs configure a simple 3 router lab 2 switch
(19xxs) with IPX/RIP/IGRP, make CCNPs do all the basics for the various
exams (STP, VLANs, IP routing, IPX routing, AppleTalk routing, bridging,
redistribution, access-lists, etc) and CCIEs do anything and everything (as
it is today). It will keep the population of certified Cisco engineers much
lower, but you can be then truly assured of them being able to fully perform
at the level they're certified at.

CCNP will not be impossible to attain - a certain lab may cover some subset
of topics (eg. BCMSN will be a switch lab, Support will be a troubleshooting
lab). The CCIE will be as it is when you must combine all technologies,
troubleshoot, and make it all work.

Similarly, Networking Academy graduates (CCNAs) probably are able to do more
than paper CCNAs who buy 1-2 books and maybe a router simulator... simply
because they get structured training and hands-on lab time.

My encouragement - learn, not cram. Understand, not memorize. Think, not
dump. Work, not cheat. And lastly, when you think you know it all - that's
when learning ceases (BIG mistake!).

Regards,
Adrian

Re: Router for play @ home

2000-08-26 Thread Kevin Wigle

Nope, don't have anything backwards.

Don't have personal experience but a Cisco Study Group in Toronto have a
vlab.

In the "beginning" they were hooked up via Sympatico ADSL.

IP changed every three days or so.

They changed to Rogers Wave.

IP Address is the same. As I said I'm a Wave user and have had the same IP
for over 18 months.

Now here in Ottawa, I have co-workers who talk about PPPoE, but they are
"recent" new users of Sympatico. Things may have changed.

Your mileage may vary.

And a question about "ip address dhcp". Probably fine to get that first IP
but will the interface track changing IP addresses?

My understanding of DHCP is usually at the halfway point of the lease, the
client requests a renewall. In normal operations this would be
automatically given.

What happens in the cable modem world? Is the lease expired forcing the
client to request a new address?

directly to
the cable/dsl as the address may change. Well you could do this but you
would have to find out what the address was and then change the router

newer IOS supported "ip address dhcp" parameter, which allows the router
to get the address via dhcp. Also, I think you have it
backwards.most cable companies are DHCP which is a broadband type

In Canada, Rogers#Home Cable trys to keep you static - but with no

if you're asking if the 25xx will connect directly to the provider

But, if you put a Internet Appliance between them, say a Linksys
Firewall,
(did I say I love mine!!!) then the FW negotiates with the cable/dsl on
the
WAN side and you use 192.168.x.x on the inside and then the 25xx address

Hey Mike- there's not a lot you can ever do with just one router.
Cable

modems are great... I get 2 Megs most of the time discourage my
neighbors from joining as often as I get a chance to :-) Cable modem
systems are a little strange. My Comcast system is fiber (digital) to
a

sidewalk box (in my neighborhood), analog into house, then it hits the
cable modem converts back to digital. So for me a lot of other
  people,
a router is only something you can add after the cable modem ( not in
place of). The best bang for the buck, is a Cisco 3000 (3101) dual
Ethernet router. They run about $250 on Ebay for another "approx."
$200

(is what it has cost me to upgrade my 3000's) you can add new boot
ROM's,

16 Megs of RAM, 8 Megs of FLASH, compress (almost any IOS Cisco has
out)

onto that 8 Megs of FLASH. This would allow you to encrypt or tunnel
to

another router with VPN IOS, setup a firewall or an access list to
take

logs, maybe good with NAT PAT...

   Good Luck !!!

Re: ip classless ?

2000-08-26 Thread Matt Gravlin

The ip classless command is used when setting up default routes. Cisco
routers (classful by default) expect a subnet mask when entering your static
ip route commands, so when you are setting up a default route, you must
specify ip classless, since no remote subnets will be in its routing table
for default routes.

Anyone knows why when we use RIP or IGRP routing protocols and we have a
default network command entered , we need to include ip classless?

Any form of input will be greatly appreciated

CCNP is easy to achieved now!

2000-08-26 Thread wind

To all CCNP;

Currently, CCNP is just easy to achieved. The passing score is too
low.
I thought that the passing score should set as least 750. Otherwise the
exam is too easy.
After a year or 2, CCNP will flood the market. May be Cisco want
CCNP be popular.

CCIE is definitely harder to achieve than ever. I talked to my
friend, CCIE , some CCIE
candidate. May be cisco want to control the no. of CCIE.

Thanks

Re: 3000? router?

2000-08-26 Thread Albert

Dale,

You can use only two Ethernet interface to do labs. There is no different
if the interface is a serial or Ethernet. You can still route through it.
Just connect it to another Ethernet port on a different router.

You can even make it into a three or more interface with loopback. Then use
extended ping to ping from that address. It is great way to practice
different routing protocols.

Hop down to your local computer store and pick up a standard
RS-232 serial cable with the proper connectors (DB9 for the 766,
and either DB9 or DB25 for the serial port on your computer).

RE: Legacy???

2000-08-26 Thread Adam Quiggle

Ole,

The reason for inserting the Exam Note "Rotary groups are considered legacy
DDR" is that frequently during vendor certification exams you will find
that **Insert Your Favorite Vendor Here** will test you on the ability to
learn the subject as they define it. Your understanding of Rotary Groups
does not rely on this fact, that is why it was delineated by a
"Note". However, if Cisco asks about "legacy DDR" you have a reference
point for the "Cisco Answer". :-)

Being from Denmark sometimes makes it harder to understand what in the world
they are talking about in the books, and here's an example where I am not
sure what they mean because I do not understand the full meaning of the word
"legacy" even though I have looked it up in a dictionary.

There's a note that reads "Rotary groups are considered legacy DDR".

What exactly does that mean?

2000-08-26 Thread Albert

Michael,

I would like to put in my 0.02.
I am currently using DSL. I got it about 18 months ago. I could not get a
static IP. The DSLM I am on is not setup for it.
You should think about who can give you a static IP that will never change.
One day you will want to connect your lab with other people's. (Chuck is
always looking for people to play with ;-) Without a static, it will be
hard. I had trying to setup a VPN to my work lab and looks like I will have
to check the IP every 2 days (that's how long the DHCP is for).

directly
 to
the cable/dsl as the address may change. Well you could do this but you
would have to find out what the address was and then change the router
  interface. Really a bother.

newer IOS supported "ip address dhcp" parameter, which allows the router
to get the address via dhcp. Also, I think you have it
backwards.most cable companies are DHCP which is a broadband type
application..DSL on the other hand is a combination of PtP
 (routed) and broadcast (bridged) customers.

In Canada, Rogers#Home Cable trys to keep you static - but with no
guarantees. I've had the same address for about 18 months now. For a
 long
time I had a 2509 directly connected to the cable modem.

if you're asking if the 25xx will connect directly to the provider
replacing
the cable/dsl router - then no, that won't happen.

But, if you put a Internet Appliance between them, say a Linksys
Firewall,
(did I say I love mine!!!) then the FW negotiates with the cable/dsl on
 the
WAN side and you use 192.168.x.x on the inside and then the 25xx address
stays the same, no muss - no fuss.

So it depends on just where your question is going.

Hey Mike- there's not a lot you can ever do with just one router.
Cable

modems are great... I get 2 Megs most of the time discourage my
neighbors from joining as often as I get a chance to :-) Cable modem
systems are a little strange. My Comcast system is fiber (digital)
 to a

sidewalk box (in my neighborhood), analog into house, then it hits the
cable modem converts back to digital. So for me a lot of other
  people,
a router is only something you can add after the cable modem ( not
 in

   Phil

Let's see I answered the quiz at the beginning of the CID exam, and
failed. I went home, studied those parts where my scores were very low, came
back a week later, answered the survey the same way, and passed with miles
to spare. Yeah, I guess Cisco was gunning for me the first time, and somehow
they failed to notice second time.

shannon,

you bring up a good point. All the cisco tests make you take the
questionairre in the beginning (as you of course know), and a disclaimer
says that your final score will depend on how you answer that
questionaire. I am curious to as to what effect the questionaire has on
the actual score and how it is calculated.

Let me say that the CCIE exam 350-001 is highly overraded. So I scored a
