BGP/OSPF issue

2000-08-30 Thread Gabriel Nickel

Hi folks,
we got a problem involving BGP and OSPF
here. Lets say we are an ISP (AS 1) with two routers (Router1, Router2)in
different cities. They are both running OSPF (and IBGP) to exchange intra-AS
routing information. Router2 is connected via BGP to an upstream provider (AS
2). Router1 has static entries for a large customer network (downstream). All
operations are running well but if we traceroute from our Router 2 to the
customer network the packets dont take the path via Router 1 but via our
upstream provider (AS 2) which is suboptimal and not desirable. From my
understanding the packets chose this path because of the eBGP administrative
distance (20). Do we have to decrease the OSPF distance to >20? In addition
static routing is not desirable (there would be too many networks to
announce).
Any input would be much
appreciated,

Gabriel

RE: VLAN's

2000-08-30 Thread Jeroen Timmer

Only when you use a 4000 switch in your setup, then you cant use ISL
encapsulation, cause it doesn't understand it.
With a 4000 switch you'll need to go with dot1q encapsulation.

You can't just make a switch port a member of all the VLAN's and hang a
router off it to route traffic between VLAN's.

The router and switch must have a way to exchange VLAN information in order
for you to route between VLAN's. You need to connect the router on a trunk
link. This link must be a Fast Ethernet link, and configured for ISL
trunking.

Then you configure the router with subinterfaces for each VLAN and use ISL
encapsulation.

Configs should be readily available on CCO.

quick question - We're setting up a temp. ISDN connection and the powers
that be want a PERMANENT (not DDR) connection on a Cisco 2500 (ios 11.2)

I've got a BRI and Dialer setup (which also aren't working, but that's
another story) - is there a default - like Dialer idle-timeout 0 that will
keep an ISDN connection up in a permanent state for a few weeks?

I know it doesn't make sense, but they're paying for it, so no skin off my

cisco questions?

2000-08-30 Thread Yee, Jason

Anyone got any comments and views on the following question :

You have just completed an upgrade to Cisco IOS Version 12.0 , access
control lists work exactly how you had them setup prior to the upgrade. You
now add two additional access-lists using the new functionality of the 12.0
operating system, you then are forced to perform a downgrade of the IOS
version back to the previous version. What happens to the new Access list
entries ?

Frame-relay traffic-rate [bit-rate [burst-size][excess-burst-size]]
don't exist the command is
traffic-shape rate bit-rate [burst-size [excess-burst-size]]

and is Generic Trafic Shaping (GTS)not frame relay specific

in the example frame-relay traffic-rate 32000 64000 16000
32000 is the CIR
64000 is the Committed burst=CIR*Tc=32000*2=64000
Tc - committed rate measurement interval
16000 is the Excess burst (usually Eb=port speed - CIR)

frame-relay traffic-rate average [peak]
Define the traffic rate for the map class.
average=CIR
[peak]=the max rate (CIR+EIR) if omitted is the port speed

in your example 1544000 is the CIR (suppose CIR=port speed don't need
command)

frame-relay adaptive-shaping {becn|foresight}
depending on the BECN recieved 64000 is the rate to which traffic shaping
will adapt

traffic-rate 32000 64000 16000
=
frame-relay traffic-rate 32000 48000

This command replaces "frame-relay traffic-rate" and have the same meaning
frame-relay traffic-rate 32000 48000

UDP and Fragmentation

2000-08-30 Thread PORTER Tara

Hello everybody,
I am in the process of studying for my CCIE written and I came across a question that
I can not find an answer to. It is about UDP
and fragmentation. What happens when UDP packets are fragmented? Do the packets have
a sequence number in thier header and does
each segment have a header?

If anybody has an idea of where I can find the anser to that question, it would be
really appreciated. I've checked the Cisco CD
and numerous books that I have, but I can't seem to find it. I know the concept of
fragmentation, ie, once a packet is fragmented
it doesn't get reassembled untill the end station. If one fragment is lost, the whole
thing must be sent again. In TCP, a packet
is fragmented and a header is put on each packet with a seq # to help the end device.
But what about for UDP? Is there any
difference?

Regards,
Tara Porter

Yes we can Suresh.

Broadcast Domains are the ones between two routers - Routers segment
broadcast domains. Switches segment collission domains. Segmentation with
switches will reduce collissions but broadcasts will still be forwarded out
all ports.

RE: Urgent: ISDN timer

Below
is a description of what the command does.  It is basically an accounting
feature.  If you don't want any accounting on voice calls then turn it
off.

CISCO-CALL-HISTORY-MIB-V1SMI.my
The Cisco Call History MIB, which describes
and stores     the call information of the
Cisco device for accounting
purposes.

Hope
this helps

why the router require username now?? related to TACACS+ issue?

2000-08-30 Thread Sim, CT (Chee Tong)

Hi.. Dear all,

May I know why my router require the username and password now, previouly
when I telnet to the router, I just need to type the user mode password

For your information, I think we are using the Security server to control
access to all the router, my security server administrator just created a
TACACS+ account for me and ask me to input my password. After a few days, I
found the router require username from me after I telnet into it, then I
type in my TACACS+ username and password , it guide me to the usermode. and
I found if I change the TACACS+ password in the security server, my router
password will be changed accordingly.

My question
1)where is the router's usermode password now? since that I log in using
TACACS+ password?
2)Where I change the TACACS+ password in the security server then the
TACACS+ for the router will be changed accordingly, how the the two things
(Security Server and Router) link with each other
3)Can anyone tell me the whole picture of that

Tong

RE: UDP and Fragmentation

2000-08-30 Thread Atif Awan

Actually fragmentation is a layer 3 issue. IP packets encapsulate both UDP
and TCP and it is the IP datagram that can get fragmented. Thats why they
have the  fragmentation offset and identification fields in the IP header;
to take care of the fragmented packets.

TCP sequence numbers add a touch of reiliability to the TCP protocol by
ensuring that the TCP segments are arrived in order. However, UDP is not
reliable as it does not have any sequence numbers so if UDP segments do come
out of order it is the responsibility of a higher layer to point that out.

In short i think you are getting confused between segmentation and
fragmentation. Segmentation occurs at layer 4 while fragmentation occurs at
layer 3. IP handles all the fragmentation issues so be it TCP or UDP
encapsulated in IP fragmentation doesnt care for that matter.

Hope this clears things up.

Regards
Atif

Subject: UDP and Fragmentation

Hello everybody,
I am in the process of studying for my CCIE written and I came across a
question that I can not find an answer to. It is about UDP
and fragmentation. What happens when UDP packets are fragmented? Do the
packets have a sequence number in thier header and does
each segment have a header?

If anybody has an idea of where I can find the anser to that question, it
would be really appreciated. I've checked the Cisco CD
and numerous books that I have, but I can't seem to find it. I know the
concept of fragmentation, ie, once a packet is fragmented
it doesn't get reassembled untill the end station. If one fragment is lost,
the whole thing must be sent again. In TCP, a packet
is fragmented and a header is put on each packet with a seq # to help the
end device. But what about for UDP? Is there any
difference?

Regards,
Tara Porter

Area 1 range 145.12.32.0 255.255.224.0

An interface on this router with the addr 145.12.32.124 is in area 1
All networks within the range 145.12.64.0 to 145.12.95.0 will be summarized
from area 0 into area 1
All networks within the range 145.12.32.0 to 145.12.63.0 will be summarized

MRTG and OID's

2000-08-30 Thread Jeroen Timmer

Hello,

I got a situation for ya'll :)

On a 4500 router we have a PRI connected. We use this line for remote
control for custumors on different locations.

Now. A lot of times we get calls from our telecom provider that some lines
to custumors are open for mare than a couple of days. We haven't got a tool
that monitors those lines for us.

My idea is to use MRTG for that. Via MRTG and a specific oid number, I
thought I would be able to see the uptime of some of the channels of our
PRI. Well .. the problem is that I couldn't find any OID that'll work with
MRTG or the 4500 router.

My question: Is there an OID for this matter, or do I run a script wich
output I use for MRTG ?

Thnx,

JT

RE: MRTG and OID's

2000-08-30 Thread Greene, Patrick
Title: RE: MRTG and OID's

Jeroen,
You need to get the Cisco MIB's for the the 4500.  Addtionally you may need to get the ISDN MIB RFC 2127.  If you need physical interface information for PRI's you may need the DS1/E1 MIB.

Once you geet these MIB's you should be able to find the OID values you are looking for.

I don't think you're fixing the real problem.
You should configure the dialer-lists so that only interesting traffic is
allowed to bring up the isdn line and keep it up.

If you fix this then you won't need mrtg.

Re: Arrrg cant remember the 80/20 Rule !

2000-08-30 Thread analogkid01

Here it is, the answer you just *knew* was coming...ready?...

IT DEPENDS! ;-)

It depends on which book you're reading and which test you're studying for.

The original 80/20 rule stated that your network should be designed so that 80% of
your traffic remains on the local LAN, and 20% of your traffic will cross your WAN.

Well, when I sat down and began reading the CCDA study guide, the authors reversed
that rule, and said that only 20% of traffic will remain on the local LAN, and 80%
will traverse the WAN. At first I thought that they were horribly confused (a la the
whole poison reverse thing - don't get me started!), but then they explained that with
a network which is connected to and relies heavily on the Internet for business
reasons, this rule is reversed.

So it basically boils down to traffic patterns - LAN traffic vs. WAN traffic, and what
your network has to be capable of handling.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

I think you probably need to use altaddr command on the citrix server so
that the server will respond to the client with the translated address. It
may also be that the PIX is not letting the high TCP and UDP ports out.

Perhaps the reason you haven't had much feedback is because all the information you're
requesting is already on the Cisco website, and if you're asking for more detailed
information, then you're asking those who've taken the test to violate their
confidentiality agreement.

Re: why the router require username now?? related to TACACS+ issue?

2000-08-30 Thread ChrisAll

The username is most likely coming from the the command Login Tacacs or
Login Local under your console or Vty lines Below shows what the config
would look like...

line con 0
exec-timeout 0 0
login tacacs
transport input none
line vty 0 4
exec-timeout 120 0
password cisco
login local

The difference between the "local" and "tacacs" options are as follows...

The local option will look for username/passwords pairs from a local
database on the router which is entered using the username command
username chris password cisco
username simct password routerguy
etc

The tacacs option after the login command will point the authentication to
use the configured tacacs service. Basically in the router config you would
have a tacacs configuration pointing to a tacacs server, so when you login
it now requests a username and password and will check it against the tacacs
database.

RE: Difference in Broadcast Domain and Collision Domain......

2000-08-30 Thread Willy Schoots

Collision domains:
Station A sends out a frame, this frame can collide with an other frame from
station X on the "wire". Station A and all other stations that could be
station X form a collision domain, this includes ports from routers and
switches. A collision domain means all the stations that share the same
physical "wire" directly or indirectly through a repeater (hub). Bridges,
switches and routers break up collision domains

Broadcast domains:
Station A sends out a broadcast, this broadcast can be received by station
X. Station A and all other stations that could be station X form a broadcast
domain. Broadcasts are normally forwarded by bridges and switches. Routers
normally filter broadcasts (not always, think about IP HELPER function).
However switches do also VLANs, this means that not all broadcasts are
forwarded out all ports. A broadcast stays within its VLAN !!!.
--> switches can break up collision domains and by using VLANs also can
break up broadcast domains.

Hi all,

How we r going to differentiate between a broadcast domain and a collision

Can we co-relate this to a router and a switch or a bridge.

RE: Arrrg cant remember the 80/20 Rule !

2000-08-30 Thread McCallum, Robert

No the CCDA book states that nowadays the original rule is reversed due to
central server locations etc etc. It is merely stating that when designing
a network you have to take the considerations mainly of political business
issues under concern. It is less traffic intensive to have your servers
local to your main users but in most cases all the servers are located in a
central location and with a client server model most of your traffic will
therfore leave your subnet.

Here it is, the answer you just *knew* was coming...ready?...

IT DEPENDS! ;-)

It depends on which book you're reading and which test you're studying for.

The original 80/20 rule stated that your network should be designed so that
80% of your traffic remains on the local LAN, and 20% of your traffic will
cross your WAN.

Well, when I sat down and began reading the CCDA study guide, the authors
reversed that rule, and said that only 20% of traffic will remain on the
local LAN, and 80% will traverse the WAN. At first I thought that they were
horribly confused (a la the whole poison reverse thing - don't get me
started!), but then they explained that with a network which is connected to
and relies heavily on the Internet for business reasons, this rule is
reversed.

So it basically boils down to traffic patterns - LAN traffic vs. WAN
traffic, and what your network has to be capable of handling.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Re: Help on Frame-relay Traffic-shaping command

2000-08-30 Thread Michael Fountain

For frame-relay traffic-rate 32000 64000 16000

32000 is your average speed, it is what the router will transmit at if
there is no congestion.
The router assumes 1/2 average speed for CIR, so it will back off to 16000
if there is congestion.
64000 is what it can burst up to
I am not positive on the last value, but I think it may be the burst
amount that can be sent per inteval in order to get the traffic up to the
burst amount for that second.

If you have 150K of traffic to send, and your interval is 125ms it will look
like this -

Second 1 - 20K / 20K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K = 64K, Total = 64K
Second 2 - 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K = 32K, Total = 96K
Second 3 - 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K = 32K, Total = 128K
Second 4 - 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 4K / 2K / 0K / 0K = 22K, Total = 150K

If there was more traffic to send, the router could send a total of 42K in
the 5th second, because it would have built up 10K of credit towards
bursting in during the 4th second.

I am not familiar with traffic shaping using the second set of commands, so
I wont comment on them.

For the commands -
>frame-relay cir 64000
>frame-relay mincir 64000

This means that the route will always transmit at 64000 no matter what.
Because there is no Bc set, it will never go over CIR, and because the
mincir = cir, it will never slow down, even if there is congestion.

If you want to get 32K average and 16K minimum, you can use the following
command -
 frame-relay traffic-rate 32000 32000

That will set the average rate to 32000, the burst rate to 32000, and the
mincir (what the router backs off to during congestion) to 16000

By doing this, the router will run at 32K constantly unless it receives
congestion notification.

You also need to use the 'frame-relat adaptive-shaping becn' to get the
router to listen to becns and slow down.

Hope that helps.

Are you having an excessive number of collisions? Why are you trying to
reduce them? Collisions are there by design. Off the top of my head I

RE: UDP and Fragmentation

2000-08-30 Thread Guyler, Rik [EESUS]
Title: RE: UDP and Fragmentation

UI believe that UDP does include sequence numbers, otherwise the segments would arrive out of order and never be sequenced properly.  It is the acknowledgement capabilities within TCP (that UDP does not have) that makes it reliable, not necessarily the sequencing.

As always, correct me if I'm wrong!  ;-}

Subject: RE: UDP and Fragmentation

Actually fragmentation is a layer 3 issue. IP packets encapsulate both UDP
and TCP and it is the IP datagram that can get fragmented. Thats why they
have the  fragmentation offset and identification fields in the IP header;
to take care of the fragmented packets.

Is there any
difference?

Mr. Dale!

Your answer is a humiliating slang on all who wants to pursue there career
certification. This slap is not only on me but to all of you who are CCIE or
going towards it. Indeed I have been going through the archives and found
some ideas but there are so many peoples with different ideas that they
confused me on what to read and what to study. So I decided to read all the
books one by one. After I went through couple of books I figured out my self
where am I standing but could not. Since the blue print is too much to cover
and is very vague. The Cisco Blue prints covers almost everything and that
is too much to go for.
Thanks for your advise and the slang to every CCIE or newcomer

Thanks for the clarification and a great explanation Willy - missed that
one! VLANs on switches do filter broadcasts. You would, however, need a
router to have hosts on two VLANs talk to each other.

And in the real world, I don't find it any longer to be a simple
two-component rule. The components are:

Local traffic (printers, caches)...think of things in-building
Campus L2 (servers on same subnet, but reached by campus fiber)
Campus L3 (servers on different subnets on the same campus)
WAN connectivity

RE: ATM Dead?

2000-08-30 Thread aziz . islam

Hi Group,
I think labelling the ATM technology as dead would be an "overkill". ATM has
its advantages as well as disadvantages. Mere opinions don't change facts.
Following are some facts about ATM:

ATM has evolved as a stable connection oriented transport that currently
operates, ATM switch to ATM switch at up to OC-48 line rates. It also lends
itself ably to traffic engineering (prior to MPLS it was the only technology
that offered traffic engineering features). It delivers many advanced
features such as PVC creation from any ingress to any egress in a given ATM
backbone, sophisticated ( but complicated ) signaling to simplify path
creation and re-routing around failures, and QoS features for bandwidth
reservation, constant bit rate, variable bit rate, and unspecified bit rate
services, applied to the cell.

However, with these advantages, ATM also has certain drawbacks. The first
and foremost being that of "overhead". ATM consumes nearly 10% of available
bandwidth with a 5 byte cell header for each 48 byte payload cell, plus an
additional 5% is needed for the adaption layer for IP over ATM as per RFC
1483. For example, an ATM OC-48 link requires 494Mbit/sec for overhead.
Compounding the bandwidth issues is ATM's limited scalability at higher link
rates. ATM switches have only recently delivered OC-48 interface rates and
it is questionable whether OC-192 is feasible considering the overhead
associated with segmentation and reassembly, wasted bandwidth, and other
inefficiencies of pushing 53bytes across 10Gbit/sec links. Today the fastest
IP router ATM interface is OC-12, which creates a bottleneck with the advent
of OC-192 capable transport systems.

When ATM is used as the transport for delivering IP in the Internet core we
face a different set of issues. ATM requires its own administrative domain
distinct from IP at Layer 3. The ATM network elements must be interconnected
in such a way to provide redundancy. The entire ATM topology is transparent
to the IP Layer 3 topology. Therefore a second topology at Layer 3 must be
overlaid atop the ATM fabric. This is achieved by establishing PVC's between
layer 3 routers. This creates another set of problems:

1. Two separate modalities are required for element management adding
complexity and cost to network management.

2. IP route exchange with an IGP requires direct peering/adjacency with all
neighbors, therefore the number of PVC's required grow by a factor of
n-to-the-power-2; where n is the number of internal IGP routers. For
example, for 300 routers: 44,850 PVC's would be necessary to establish a
complete mesh. If 4 more routers are added the PVC count jumps to 46,056 (an
increase of 1206 PVC's). This represents a substantial network-provisioning
problem. In the event of a router failure in this scenario, the surviving
routers will issue IGP routing updates on the order of n-to-the-power-3 (300
routers would issue 27 Million updates). This effect can be reduced by
configuring route-reflectors/confederations, however, it still adds to the
complexity and becomes a provisioning nightmare.

3. ATM uses its own signaling protocol (PNNI) to establish PVC's. IP uses
OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP as its signaling protocols. The two signaling layers
operate independently and therefore complicate interworking between the
layers. To gain advantage of ATM traffic engineering features IP signaling
protocols must run within the ATM PVCs.

The question boils down to Howard's C. Berkowitz's often-quoted saying,
"What is the problem that you are trying to solve ? Knowing the advantages
and disadvantages that ATM offers, educated choices regarding its usage can
be made depending upon one's application.

Nadeem -

Please do not presume to speak for all CCIE candidates. Mr. Holmes's post was rough,
but your original post earned you the responses you've gotten. The CCIE certification
is a big moutain to climb, and if you feel it is "too much," then Mr. Holmes is right
in his advice to you.

As far as the differences in opinion are concerned, you're right in that they can be
confusing. However, this is a part of life, and each of us must make choices for
ourselves on which study method to choose, which car to buy, which girl to marry.
When looking for a new book to use in preparation for a certification exam, I read
reviews on Amazon.com or some other online bookstore, and if that isn't enough for me
to make a decision, then I go to my local bookstore (Softpro) and start flipping pages.

We will not spoon-feed you here. You must decide for yourself. Let this thread and
conversation end here.

If you had been continuously READING the messages on groupstudy mailing

needed.

At this point in your endeavor, I can only suggest that you consider NOT
taking the exam, and instead look into other career paths where the entry

taxi driver

elevator operator

There are many others that may appeal to you. If you find that you simply

RE: eigrp Messages

2000-08-30 Thread Stull, Cory

The 2 routers are physically on the same ethernet but not on the same IP
subnet.. EIGRP is just letting you know that it is seeing the EIGRP hello
messages being sent out from the other router but that it cannot establish
it as a neighbor router because its not on the same IP subnet... Same
thing happens in my lab when I have all of the routers ethernet ports
plugged into the same hub and have them configured for OSPF... If there is
nothing else on that physical ethernet that you would need the router(s) to
establish neighbor relationships with you could always setup a passive
interface...

List guru's, if I'm off track a little here would you please let us know?

RE: Arrrg cant remember the 80/20 Rule !

2000-08-30 Thread Guyler, Rik [EESUS]
Title: RE: Arrrg cant remember the 80/20 Rule !

The 80/20 rule states that 80% of your traffic will stay local and 20% will flow outside of the LAN to the Internet/WAN.

Recent thoughts on the matter, however, have concluded that the numbers should be reversed to more accurately reflect "modern" traffic trends.  In other words, modern traffic patterns would more resemble 20% local traffic and 80% remote traffic.

RE: CCIE WRITTEN ---- Please provide your feedback.

2000-08-30 Thread Brian Hescock

Nadeem,
Hi, while Dale may have been a little hard on you, CCIE certification
isn't a quick and easy endeavor like CNE or MCSE (I know, I have both of
them). You're expected to know all items in the blue print, maybe not
extensively but you should be familiar with them. So in that regard I
have to agree with Dale somewhat that if it's too much information for you
to cover then the CCIE certification might not be what you're looking
for. The CCIE isn't a watered-down exam like all the others in the
industry, it's very difficult by design and basically requires you to put
the rest of your life on hold while you pursue it. Passing the CCIE
written is far easier than passing the lab.

I have heard from more than one person that Caslow's book is great for the
written exam. Take a look at it if you don't already have it. I studied
from Giles but that is too much material. Get Caslow's book.

RE: access-list and telnet

2000-08-30 Thread Irwin Lazar

sure, set an access list that only permits your internal subnet.

such as:
access-list 1 permit 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255

then enter the following commands:

config t
line vty 0 4
access-class 1 in
end

make sure you have a password set on your vty ports.

MAKE SURE YOU TEST THIS ON A ROUTER THAT YOU CAN ACCESS VIA THE CONSOLE!!!

Restricting Telnet Access to Particular IP Addresses
If you want to allow only certain IP addresses to use Telnet to access the
router, you must use the access-class command. The command access-class nn

virtual terminal lines on the router. The following configuration commands

You will take the actual router ID which the OSPF process has taken up on
that router. If you have a loopback address defined on the remote router i
can bet that loopback address is taken up as the router ID by the ospf

Router(config)# access-list 10 permit 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255
Router(config)# line vty 0 4
Router(config-line)# access-class 10 in

Assuming your internal network is 10.10.10.0/24 the above configuration
commands will only allow the telnet sessions to be initiated by computers
internal to your network. You can also restrict the telnet sessions to a
particular machine by playing around with the access-list.

Re: Collisions on Ethernet Lan

2000-08-30 Thread John Neiberger

You're right! I was thinking of broadcasts, which shouldn't exceed 20%. I
think 0.1 % is a little low, though. The collision rate can be fairly high
before you'll notice much of a degradation in performance. I just took a
look at a fairly busy ethernet port on our main router and it was showing a
4.4% collision rate. I personally wouldn't get worried unless the rate was
pushing 10%.

Re: ATM Dead?

2000-08-30 Thread Bart Kurek

I can give some first hand knowledge being in the industry of ATM sales. We
haven't sold ATM in Portland metro for quite some time. Not because it is
dead or because it is not functional but simply because it's to difficult
for the average broadband consumer to understand. On paper it's simple. It's
the implementation, maintenance and tuning they find difficult to
understand. To overcome this ignorance and lack of willing we sell a product
called TLS (Transparent LAN Service.) This is essentially ATM handed off to
a device which converts to 10/100 Ethernet. Even this is getting harder to
sell as we move to an IP centric environment and customer's generally need
simple Internet access or a clear channel pipe. You'll still find ATM in
bigger shops who have had ATM for some time now and have found that it
suites their needs or have simply invested so much capital in hardware that
it wouldn't make sense for them to move away. With QoS being quickly
developed for Internet based applications most customer's find that these
new devices will suite their needs. This is just my opinion. ;)

RE: CCIE WRITTEN ---- Please provide your feedback.

2000-08-30 Thread Dale Holmes

Nadeem,

My original response was meant partly as humor, but also as a statement of
reality...

You state in your reply:
"The Cisco Blue prints covers almost everything, and that
is too much to go for."

I suspected that this was your attitude and that is why I wrote as I did.
This one sentence which you have written, which stems from a deeper attitude
within you, is the single reason which you will fail.

I cannot sugar-coat it for you. If you truly believe what you have said,
then you will not succeed. I cannot encourage you to go forth with that
attitude, because you will be in for a long road of heartache and
disappointment. This is a fact.

Yes, the exam blueprint is extensive. BUT, an understanding of EVERY single
topic on the list IS an attainable goal, AND - it is THE GOAL you must set
for yourself if you want to get the CCIE. There are no shortcuts.

No question you can ask anyone on any list will change the fact that you
must cover all of this material, and only you can do the work. If you
demonstrate to this list an appetite for learning, and an earnest effort to
obtain that learning, the I (and everyone else here) will help you in any
way we can. BUT, when you come to the list begging for, or worse yet -
demanding shortcuts and handouts, then the best advice I can offer you is to
seek another path.

This is sincere advice, not sarcasm or bitter discouragement. Consider
carefully your motivation for attaining the CCIE, and your commitment to the
task. Then, if you find that you still want it, start again with the Exam
Blueprint (and the resultant BIG pile of books). This is the road we all
follow... and you will see us all, some ahead of you and some behind you,
moving at different speeds, but all in the same direction.

Once again, Good Luck!

Dale

Shouldnt take long to produce.

Re: Citrix ICA and PIX

2000-08-30 Thread Dragon

Steve,

Lonnie's suggestion is correct. I've done this and it does work. You need
to use the 'altaddr' command on each Citrix server so it will return the
external IP rather than the internal IP to the client. You also need to
have the client ask for the alternate address, only for external clients
obviously. This is a config setting on the client. I am using the ICA
client version 4.21.779 and within the client I hit the 'Settings' button,
from there I hit the 'Firewalls...' button then I check the 'Use Alternate
address for Firewalls' check box. As you've indicated you also need to have
the TCP 1494 (unless changed) and UDP 1604 (you can't change this one) ports
open on the PIX.

Good luck,
Dave

Look in the archives. Princilla Oppenheimer asked cisco about whether the
surwey affects the score and posted the answer to this list a few months
ago. I can not explain it better than cisco did.

Although the idea that the survey affects the score is interesting, I too
cannot fathom how the survey matters.

You can answer the survey different for every exam. Where is the continuity
there? And explain to me the difference between a "beginning" CCIE
Candidate and a "seasoned" CCIE Candidate.

Changing your answers to the survey seems like an easy way to improve your
odds. How would Cisco know that your survey answers are correct?

In truth, I don't think I have answered all the surveys the same as I have
grown from the first Cisco exam over 2 years ago to completing CCDP/CCDP
just last month.

Nah, I don't think the survey means anything to us. I do think that Cisco
wants to know the demographics of who is taking what exams. Unfortunately
this would mean that Cisco is adding a little scare tactic to get you to
answer their survey but perhaps adding a little more anxiety when you need
it least.

my .02 cents

RE: access-list and telnet

2000-08-30 Thread Gawie Herholdt
Title: RE: access-list and telnet

You can do this by creating a standard IP access list and apply it to your VTY's. You can make it more stricter by playing with the wildcard mask bits. A sample config could look like this:

access-list 55 permit 172.16.1.0 0.0.0.255
.
.
.
line vty 0 4
 access-class 55 in

Give it a try

I only want admins from the inside of our network to be able to access the routers via telnet is there any way I could use access-lists to control this?

IGMP Snoop

2000-08-30 Thread Daniel Boutet

In order to enable CGMP on a switch IGMP snooping has to be disable.

This is what I found on CCO:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/22.html#IGMP%20Snooping

So is my understanding right. On c5000/c6000 series I have to issue: set
igmp disable in order for cgmp to be enabled?

Issuing the set cgmp enable command won't disable igmp automatically?

Thanks for your help!
