Configuring a DHCP Server using 3620

2000-09-09 Thread Adele Galus

Hi All;

I was looking for configurations on a 3620 to figure out how I can allow

for traffic when the DHCP is assign IP addresses. I have seen that
Cisco
has their version of DHCP but this is not for an NT box. Would I be
using an
access-list?

Also, when would you suggest using 192.168.0.0 vs 10.10.0.0 for setting
private on IP address on a DHCP? My thoughts make it simple for the
user.
Using the 10.10.0.0 should be used by the professionals.

I am on a mission. Appreciate the advice. Thanks a million.

Maybe we could pick one particular subject, read the material, then get
together and have a study session and lab work. After that we move on to the
next subject.

Re: Problem with Cisco Catalyst C2924C-XL-EN Switch Thanks in advance for your help!

2000-09-09 Thread Bryan Osoro

At this point you have to do a Xmodem file transfer. SA1 is the bootloader
on ALL 2900XL switches that is switch:

TFTP option is NOT available at switch: to do a xmodem transfer do the
following

type flash_init
load_helper
copy xmodem:filename.bin flash:filename.bin
then type
set BOOT flash:filename.bin
reset

you might want to do a format flash: command before you do the upload
this upload will take about 32 minutes :-)

Once you can boot to the IOS prompt. you may want to do the TFTP upgrade
with the .tar file (which contains the html files for the CVSM). If not,
you are done

RE: BGP on 2600?

2000-09-09 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Hey, Aaron, when's that lab scheduled?

I wanted to add that one reason for keeping the Cisco configuration tool
link handy is that Cisco appears to be committed to it, in terms of keeping
it current. There is information there, for example, that cannot be found
within the regular product information pages on CCO.

So, for example, there is nary a word about the 2650 and 2651 in the product
documentation or catalogue, but the configuration tool has the product, DRAM
and flash maximums and minimums, as well as all the modules available.

The reseller's version of the page also includes information on expected
lead time between ordering and shipping.

I haven't fooled around with it too much, but among the tools offered to
members of the consultant's program is a handy little matrix that allows one
to specify technologies, ports, etc and then come up with a list of products
matching those requirements.

Cisco continues to make every effort to offer first rate tools and support
to interested parties. Having recently visited a couple of Cisco competitor
web sites to find things, I can say that the competition is in general a bit
behind in this area.

Yes there are some shortcomings. The information provided about the CVPN
line, for example, borders on pathetic. But situations like this appear to
be the rare exception, not the general rule.

Here's the link one more time. Check it out. It can be a valuable part of
your study and professional arsenal.

If you get one of the 2600 models with the 80MHz processor you can run 128
MB RAM. The 40 and 50 MHz processors only support 64 MB of RAM.

The 80 MHz processor only comes in the 265x models.

Cable to allow reverse telnet w/o null modem adapter?

2000-09-09 Thread Clayton Price

We have a Cisco 2611 that is has a NM-32A module in it. We are using the
octal cables with the DB25 ends on them.

I'm using the router to provide console access to several Sun and F5
BigIp/3DNS boxes.

My question is does anyone know if it is possible to wire (pinout) a CAT 5
cable to allow us to place a RJ-45 to DB25 adapter on each end of the cable
without having to use a null modem adapter.

Currently using a null modem cable, or a rollover cable with a null modem
adapter are the only ways I have been able to get it to work.

Thanks,

Clayton Price

Re: Modem question

2000-09-09 Thread Ejay Hire

You would be correct. If you read the fine pritn on the modem box, it even
says this. ... US Robotics "While Download speeds of 56k are possible, FCC
limitations enforce a download limit of 53.3K" In Real Life, 90% of the
universe is too far from the local CO to get a real speed better than 33.6.
Add into that the limitations of Software controlled modems, and most people
would be impressed by a 56k Leased line connection, because it would "feel"
twice as fast as a dial-up. This accounts for much of ISDN's continued
popularity.

Hi Group

When you use a 56K modem to connect to internet,
you never achieve 56K. For example, sometimes it
shows that the bytes sent at 48000 bps, sometimes
45000 bps, everytime it's different. So, where has
those "bandwidth" gone to?? (<--please correct if
I'm wrong on this) So, can I conclude that a 56K
modem is only theoretically 56K???

Thanks and regards.

Re: Static route question !!

2000-09-09 Thread Ejay Hire

Yes, a route has to be added to each router. Additionally, any hosts that
will be configured to send data accross the WAN will need there default
gateway set to their closest router.

Alternatively, you can use a routing protocol like RIP to have the routers
"Discover" each other and create there own routes.

Good Luck,

HI all.
In configuring static route between a central site
router and a branch office router, do we need to
configure static route on both routers? or either of
them? or only central site router? or only branch
office router? and why?

Thanks in adv.

ATM Virtual Lab Time

2000-09-09 Thread Bruce

Does anyone know where I can do virtual labs with ATM scenarios. I did not
see any on Mentorlabs or some of the others. I would appreciate any advice.
I have access to a 7206 with coaxial DS3 modules and a couple of 3620's and
2500's with serial interfaces and a Catalyst 5000. Is there any way to set
up ATM with that equipment? I am trying to learn ATM but I am having trouble
getting hands on. If you have Any advice at all, please let me know.

Hmmm, I think it is more likely to depend on the switching method of the

RE: Linux Proxy server and 1700 using NAT

2000-09-09 Thread Trevor Corness

Yes, definately. Don't run NAT on the Router, only use it on the Linux box.
I assume you have a LAN of a few (or more) PCs on the other side of the
Linux box. You will need a cross-over UTP cable (best solution) and then
set it up similiar to this :

Internal PCs (2, 10, 50, 2000)
||
Ethernet/FE Switch
|
Linux Internal NIC1 (Inside address)
 Linux PC
Linux External NIC2 (Outside address)
X (cross-over cable)
X
  Eth 0
   1720 Router
  WIC 0 WIC 1
I I
I I
   PSTNPSTN

Basically, use a switch/hub with your internal PCs hooked up in a LAN
configuration. Plug the Inside IP NIC of the Linux box into that
hub/switch. This completes your internal network.

Use a crossover cable to connect your Outside (Live) IP NIC to the E0 of the
1720 router. This is a separate cable segment, with 2 nodes.. E0, and the
NIC (xl1 or whatever).

As usual, have your 2 WICs connecting the PSTN as they do now.

This is best, as the Linux box now also segments all the broadcast traffic
and "crap" from the LAN side, and blocks that traffic from "sneaking" out
into the "real" world. I have done this several times in the past, and it
works fine.

RE: BGP on 2600?

If you get one of the 2600 models with the 80MHz processor you can run 128
MB RAM. The 40 and 50 MHz processors only support 64 MB of RAM.

The 80 MHz processor only comes in the 265x models.

Let me suggest again - bookmark this link. The Cisco configuration Tool can
be of great assistance in answering these kinds of questions.

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/front.x/config_root.pl

the 265x can accommodate 128 meg DRAM

the 261x and 262x appear to be capable of only 64 meg DRAM

How does cisco router load-balancing?

2000-09-09 Thread luobin Yang

Hi, group,

I have question quite confused about. I learnt that per-packet
load-balancing is used when process-switching is enabled and
per-destination load-balancing is used when fast-switching is enabled.

My question is, If there are two equal-cost routes between RouterA and
RouterB, let's say the interfaces are E0 and E1. If I enable
process-switching on E0 and fast-switching on E1, which load-balancing
is used in this situation?

Hope can get some answer.

netbios, whats it good for?

Was not I, for I have yet to run a network with AppleTalk on it.. though, I
did some sniffing on a contract, with 8 G4's on site, as well as about 45
WinNT4 machines.. and let me tell you, for a dotcom, there was a LOT of
useless NetBIOS traffic going on.. and very negligible amount of native
AppleTalk traffic. Actually considering buying a G4 Cube for a toy :)

Seeking Cisco and networking addicts in Chicago

2000-09-09 Thread Control Program

Hey folks!  Hats off to the list maintainers and to all the participants;
this is a terrific group. Lots of good information!

This is a quick broadcast (ARP request?) to find out if there's anyone in
the Chicago area who'd be interested in getting together to talk networking
and Cisco stuff. This could be anything from serious study to shooting the
breeze about the latest developments in networking technology.

I've been haunting the Internet for ten or eleven years now and spent a lot
of time at the outset learning all there was to learn about Unix systems and
TCP/IP. Over the last three or four years I've gotten more involved with
Internet infrastructure as it exists beyond the end systems, which is how I
first found myself facing an enable-mode prompt on a Cisco 7500 series
router at the core of an ISP environment with no documentation in sight. To
cut a long story very short, I learned how to configure the thing on the fly
and got addicted to IOS and high-speed networks in general. My Internet and
Unix background combined with this new direction has gotten me involved with
the IETF more recently as well.

I haven't taken 640-507 yet, but expect to do so within the next couple of
weeks. I'd like to do it soon so I can get on to the even more interesting
stuff! So I'm open to talking about CCNA-level things, but by no means
limited to doing so. Other areas I'm learning about now include:

- ATM switching, LANE and LAN/WAN integration
- VLANs and "Layer 3" switching
- Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
- BGP and OSPF routing issues
- Voice and multimedia over IP and ATM

If you're in Chicago (I'm in the Loop, myself) and think it could be useful,
or at least amusing, to get together and talk about (work with?) these or
any other similarly nifty network-related topics, please drop me an email
and we'll see what we can do.

Off to study...

Different telco standards. No real reason, they just chose to use
different pairs. T-1 is an RJ-48 standard, and 56K is an RJ-45. Note
that many people mistakenly refer to any 8-pin modular connector as an
"RJ-45". This is not technically accurate. The manner in which the
connector is used determines its RJ-number. "RJ-nn" is an FCC standard
for "Registered Jack", describing interfaces to the telephone network in
Part 68 of FCC Rules. An 8-pin modular connector by itself isn't an
RJ-anything until it is wired to a network.

> (b) What is the purpose of using a 56K or T1 crossover cable ?

Anywhere you have a physical protocol that uses one physical wire or pair
for transmitting and another for receiving there may be the need to connect
two devices directly without an intermediate medium. A 56K or T1 crossover
would be used to connect two CSUs for a lab or short-haul connection. It's
the same principle as an ethernet crossover or a null-modem for RS-232.

The signal originating outbound on one side is connected to the input
expecting a signal on the other side, and vice-versa.

More Cisco pinouts than you'll ever want to know about. The docs for each
router series have a section on cables used with that particular box. The
URL above is for a 3600 which should cover most of them.

Cisco is assuming that you only configured a enable password and not a
enable secret. Which is odd because they recommend using enable secret where
possible. As you know the Enable secret is used over the enable, thus
making the enable password useless. Have fun

Well color me enabled, that was it right there, and I missed the command
line error. You are right, should have been enable secret, not enable
password.

Cisco's site said to use enable password so thats what I used.
Of course I should have used enable secret .

Here is the last two steps that Cisco has for recovery for the 2900XL:

13.Change the password.

switch#config terminal
switch(config)#enable password Cisco

14.Write the running configuration to the configuration file.

switch(config)#write mem

It comes from this link:

Now that Ive gone through this, the last few steps are wrong. Specially
the write mem part.

Try putting Portfast on the switch ports. Then reset the priorities on the
two routers, and re-enable HSRP. See if that helps

Re: Sorry to bring this up again but, please recommend me lab equipments

2000-09-09 Thread John Hardman

Hi

Well here is the link on the CCO for the equipment list CCIE R/S lab.
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html

The page will give you a very good idea of what equipment you will likely
see. When it comes to building your own lab at home/work, it is all a matter
of money and time. If you have $10K-$20 to spend on your lab then you have
all of the time to work on it. If you don't have the bucks, get what you can
and live with having to schedule your time around a Internet rack.

Checkout ccbootcamp.com for good examples of lab racks and what time on one
costs.

Re: MAC Address support for c1900 series

2000-09-09 Thread tcpipppp

When you set a Network Port on the switch, it will not flood a packet with
an unknown destination MAC address out all of the ports. Packets with
unknown destination MAC addresses are "drained" out the network port. The
only practical application where I can see using a "network port" is if the
MAC addresses of all the devices attached to the switch have been statically
set in the switch. In this case, the switch would know about all the
devices that it has to talk to, and we can send the packet with the unknown
destination MAC address out the network port, hopefully to find its way to
the proper destination.

The problem that you will find by using a network port is that if the MAC
addresses of the other devices that are connected to the switch have not
been statically set, they may appear to "dropp off the network" Network
printers are a big problem because they usually generate very little
traffic, so the switch doesn't learn the MAC address. If you printer is
sitting on port 7, and you have defined a network port, there is a good
chance that any packets that are supposed to go to the printer will actually
go out the network port and never find their way to the printer. In most
applications, I have found it reasonable NOT to use the network port. If
you do use it, you will want to make sure that you understand why you are
using it, and the limitations of using it.

In the Cat 1900, I believe the setting to set a network port is in the
System Menu.

You may actually be dealing with normal behavior of the device. I know that
on the 800 series routers, you cannot ping the BRI interface from the router
itself, but it will respond to pings from other devices when the link is up.

So basically it's a "trunk link" that you set as a "network port"? Or is it
just any port that are basically not use a
whole lot and you do not mind having the broadcast whenever a MAC needs to
be learned so that way your CAM
table stays within the 1024 address range for the 1900's? Doesn't the CAM
work on a FIFO base?

I am still not too clear on this.
Also, what is the command on the switch to tell it that it's a network port?

I guess that's good news for all of us who are trying damn hard to be a
CCIE. After all, the less # worldwide, the more value this cert will have.
it's all just simple "supply vs demand".

Good luck to all!

see that 4 bytes are added. Interestingly, they note that the IEEE has
formed a workgroup 802.3ac to extend ethernet maximum frame size to 1522
octets to take care of the baby giant issue.
Thanks again for increasing my understanding.

RE: The difference between crossover and rollover cable

2000-09-09 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Crossover is where you cross 1 with 3 and 2 with 6.

1 --- 3
2 --- 6
3 --- 1
4 --- 4
5 --- 5
6 --- 2
7 --- 7
8 --- 8

Rollover is where you mirror all 8 wires, so 1 goes to 8, 2 goes to 7,
etc...

1 --- 8
2 --- 7
3 --- 6
4 --- 5
5 --- 4
6 --- 3
7 --- 2
8 --- 1

RE: firewall interface

2000-09-09 Thread Alfredo Rodriguez

Are you running chechpoint on the Nokia box ? If so you need to setup
proxy arps for your Nat'ed addresses. Unlike a PIX box the proxy arp
setups are not automatically created when you setup NAT. You can find more
info on this subject by going to www.phone.com ,they have a section on NAT
and ARP problems.

Hello Dennis,

Most Firewalls don't allow the ICMP Requests and Echos to go through
them. I myself have never used a Nokia Firewall, so I can't give you any
direction in that manner. What I can say is that you should verify that
ICMP is allowed or permited from the Outside to the inside. Ensure there
is
an open conduit or something along that line.

Hope that helps.

Re: Sorry to bring this up again but, please recommend me lab equipments

2000-09-09 Thread Brad Ellis

Sean,

Hi! I provide (sell) full CCIE kits and recommendations for gear. The
biggest factor is determining a home lab is your budget. I usually
recommend the following:

Minimum CCIE lab: (apprx 10k-15k)
5-7 routers
1 switch

Mid sized (apprx 12k-25k)
6-10 routers (including voice, ISL, and ISDN)
1 switch (cat5k or equiv)
voice cards
ISDN simulator

big kahuna (approx $50,000)
11 routers, 1 switch, voice gear, ISDN, and atm

your best bet would be to purchase a mid sized or minimum lab, and then buy
rack time on a virtual rack to cover ATM. For an experienced network
engineer, 5-10 days of ATM usage usually does the trick.

Re: Is this book necessary for 640-507?

2000-09-09 Thread Reggie Grubbs

I used the Lammle 407 book along with the ICND book and the Sybex e-trainer.
The main reason I got the ICND book was because I only had the 407 version
of the Lammle book, but even if I had the 507 book I think I would have
benefited from the ICND book. It always helps to have more than one
perspective.

ospf summarization metric answer

2000-09-09 Thread Felice Russell

document fixes routing loops which can occur in RFC 1583 when
the same external destination is advertised by AS boundary routers in
separate areas. There are two manifestations of this problem. The
first, discovered by Dennis Ferguson, occurs when an aggregated
forwarding address is in use. In this case, the desirability of the
forwarding address can change for the worse as a packet crosses an
area aggregation boundary on the way to the forwarding address, which
in turn can cause the preference of AS-external-LSAs to change,
   resulting in a routing loop.

The second manifestation was discovered by Richard Woundy. It is
caused by an incomplete application of OSPF's preference of intra-
area routes over inter-area routes: paths to any given
ASBR/forwarding address are selected first based on intra-area
preference, while the comparison between separate ASBRs/forwarding
addresses is driven only by cost, ignoring intra-area preference. His
example is replicated in Figure 19. Both router A3 and router B3 are
originating an AS-external-LSA for 10.0.0.0/8, with the same type 2
metric. Router A1 selects B1 as its next hop towards 10.0.0.0/8,
based on shorter cost to ASBR B3 (via B1->B2->B3). However, the
shorter route to B3 is not available to B1, due to B1's preference
for the (higher cost) intra-area route to B3 through Area A. This
leads B1 to select A1 as its next hop to 10.0.0.0/8, resulting in a
   routing loop.

Moy Standards Track [Page 207]

RFC 2178 OSPF Version 2July 1997

The following two changes have been made to prevent these routing
   loops:

   o When originating a type 3 summary-LSA for a configured area
address range, the cost of the summary-LSA is now set to the
maximum cost of the range's component networks (instead of the
previous algorithm which set the cost to the minimum component
cost). This change affects Sections 3.5 and 12.4.3, Figures 7
   and 8, and Tables 6 and 13.

o The preference rules for choosing among multiple AS-
external-LSAs have been changed. Where previously cost was the
only determining factor, now the preference is driven first by
type of path (intra-area or inter-area, through non-backbone area
or through backbone) to the ASBR/forwarding address, using cost
only to break ties. This change affects Sections 16.4 and 16.4.1.

Is HSRP configured on the 2600?

2/3 on the 4000 is configured for vlan 1, but it looks like HSRP is configured
(for some reason) on the 2600 on a vlan (other than the management vlan) which
sits on the same segment as vlan 1.

You don't need HSRP on a router stick design anyway.

Hope this helps... just going by from the debug output..
