CCIE Written Passed!

2000-11-20 Thread Tim Ross

I passed my CCIE written exam today. It was a very frustrating exam. After I
failed it the first time, I purchased the Boson CCIE practice Test. Boson
had helped me before to prepare and pass CID and complete my CCDP track.

If not for these, I might be re-taking this exam until this time next year.
It was the best investment I ever made. The good thing about it is that, it
is more like a tutor than a practice test. It clarified lots of areas that I
had problems with.

My other advice: go to http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/CCIE
It is the blueprint of the things that you should know. Cisco is not
kidding. You must know whatever is mentioned here.

Sorry, I can't provide more info (NDA), but study hard because the test
content is broad, test questions ambiguous.

Async Dialing Issue

2000-11-20 Thread Waqar M

Dear All, i m facing an issue here:

I have a Cisco 2520 and cisco 1720 routers for async dial backup
connectivity. On Cisco 1720, i am using aux port for dialing out and on
cisco 2520, i m using the Sync/Async port for accepting incoming connectons
and consequently i have configured it accordingly. But async port is not
accepting calls. As soon as call comes in, it disconencts it by giving
timeout signal in "debugging ppp negotiation". I have tried each and every
step but the problem is recurring. Kindly help me regarding this issue.
Moreover, the line is working fine using AUX port as incoming connection, so
this means that modems are OK.

The configuration of Cisco 1720 is:
interface Async5
ip address 5.5.5.4 255.0.0.0
no ip directed-broadcast
encapsulation ppp
dialer in-band
dialer string 4313052
no cdp enable

line aux 0
modem InOut
transport input all
stopbits 1
speed 115200

The Configuration of Cisco 2520 is:

interface Serial3

no ip directed-broadcast
encapsulation ppp
async default routing
async mode dedicated
no peer default ip address

line 3
modem InOut
transport input all
speed 115200
stopbits 1
flowcontrol hardware

Any sort of help will be highly appreciated.

RE: Passed MCNS

2000-11-20 Thread A.Strobel

Two resources helped me the most to pass my MCNS:

1- The original courseware by Cisco. Almost all the questions come from this
manual. The book " Designing Network Security " by Merike Kaeo is a good
reference, but not much help with the exam.

2- Boson practice test. Great resource and big help.

RE: Async Dialing Issue

as far as I know, you need to have a chat script for each router. The modem
needs to be configured for the aux port- try "modem autodiscovery" A dialer
map statement is needed bound to the modem script for this to work.

Autonegotiation does cause problems sometime. Rather specify it manually. I
had a instance where an uplink autonegotiated to half duplex on one side an

I would manually set your port speeds so that the router and the switches
match. Autonegotiation does not always work.

RE: Async Dialing Issue

2000-11-20 Thread Waqar M

Dear Andrew,
there is no issue with the dialing and chat script, the default chat script
is performing well but the issue is that the Cisco 2520's modem(usr_courier)
is negotiating well but not connecting. It gives an output "Time out
CONFREJ". Moreover, the Sycn/Async port is not autoconf the modem but the
Cisco 1720 can.

Locked Console`

2000-11-20 Thread Austin

I have a Cisco 2511 and the console has locked all of a sudden.
I get output from the boot sequence, but after it gives me the memory stats,
nothing.
It does not respond to hitting the enter key ... nothing.
Any thoughts on this??

RE: 4 NET WORK CARDS IN ONE SERVER

2000-11-20 Thread Greene, Patrick

Just
plug and go...W2K is Plug and Play and works quite well..better than Win9x ever
was.  I too am curious as to why you would take this route.  If you
are trying to run FEC and aggregrate bandwidth then be sure to distribute the
cards across all of the buses on the motherboard otherwise you will only
accomplish some fault tolerance.  I have done some extensive performance
tests of aggregating 100Mbs cards using FEC (Fast Ether ChannelThis was the
Intel Server Card) and the increased CPU load managing the FEC negated the
minimal increase in throughput...not to mention the major Disk Array
bottleneck.

Re: Thoughts on the 640-25 CID exam

Your comment below, "...after you pass CID, you are ready for the ccie

At present moment, I am studying to "pass" the CID when I was browsing this

I am, I was just curious to how close to the CID the CCIE written is.

RE: ISDN PRI MODULE

2000-11-20 Thread Evan You

I am assuming that you are probably referring to an E1 PRI interface?
Probably G.703?

Also, I want to add that if you are dealing with an E1 PRI G.703, unbalance
wiring has two Coaxial physical cables while the balanced G.703 uses a
RJ-48C connector. Also, realize that many international countries DO NOT
provide a DSU NTU on E1 interface. So you will need a router that supports
in internal DSU or get an external CSU/DSU.

Thanks,

Evan You

Hi Willy!

Balanced and Unbalanced is a term carried over from transmission line
theory...ie., any form of energy transfer between two points.
(It overs data, microwave, telephone circuits, radio antenna, as well as
high-voltage power distribution!)

A balanced line uses two channels (ie., conductors) for energy transmission.
What happens is that the voltage of the two conductors are equal in
strength, but opposite in direction (ie., positive and negative voltages)
with respect to ground, in this way any induced voltages (ie., interference)
are minimised => you can run this type of cable over longer distances
without corrupting the original voltage
(ie., data).
Example: G.703 interface, twin-ax cable, Cat-5 cable, RS-442, POTS copper
line (ie., TIP and RING) etc.,
Advantage: Longer distance runs with less corruption on the channel
Disadvantage: More complicated end interfaces and tends to require closer
tolerances for the cable => more expensive!

An un-balanced line is one in which the voltages are not equal, with respect
to ground.
Example: X.21 interface, RS-232, TV/Radio coax cable etc.,
Advantage: Cheaper cable, line drivers (ie., interfaces) are cheaper as well
Disadvantage: Not suitable for long distance runs

I hope that helps...on the balanced and un'balanced front!

Regards,
Serge :)

therefore, even though ATM LANE has been removed, you'll still need to know

Router Flight Cases

2000-11-20 Thread Cthulu, CCIE Candidate

Hi, all,

Y'all recall that I posted a few weeks ago for a router cabinet. Well, I
got some good leads, and then my circumstances have changed...again. I
will be spending alot of time in KC in a corporate apartment for the next
2-8 months, so rack mounting my routers at home won't do me any good. I
want to take them with me on the plane to my new quarters.

Does anyone know where I can buy one of those flight cases with the 19 inch
rack inside that are about 3-4 feet high, and can can hold about 8 2500
sized routers? (The AGS will be staying at home.) I plan on taking my
routers with me so that I can while the hours away with study. The case I
am looking for is very similar to what the instructors use to transport
their routers from class to class. Most of us have seen them: the
instructor pops the top and inside are the cabled routers ready for use.

I have been all over the web, and can not find exactly what I need. I don't
even know if flight case is the right word.

TIA,

Charles

Are you logging in directly on the Sun server or remotely? Are you only
having problems with Netscape, or other X applications as well?

check what UID your X process is starting at:

"ps -ef|grep X"

should be running as root with an auth file:

root 26022 1673 0 Nov 17 ?0:03 /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0
-nobanner -auth /var/dt/A:0-Jtaird

What you could also do is use "xhost +root" (while being logged in as
the user who owns the X process). You will need a path to
/usr/openwin/bin/ to find xhost.

The "F" in FECN means forward, so I choose "a."

The packet arrives at the dest, notifying the dest that it experienced
congestion along the way, so that rules out "b." Which is actually the
correct answer if the question were "What is the purpose of BECN"

"c." is not a function of FECN nor BECN.

Sure wish "the router" was defined ;-) but this does keep it realistic ;-)

My first was a week late, the second one day early. Anyway, my 2 1/2 year
old knows how to spot a router and a hub (well, hubs and switches are a bit
hard to tell the difference between). He already has fun with patch cords
and such. I just have to make sure I keep my routers up high enough so that
he's not plugging one end in an ethernet switch and the other in a serial
wic or console port. Oh, and he also like to cause network loops with
crossover cables in my 100Base-T (only) hub that I have low enough for him
to get to (usually just powered off unless we're having a LAN party).

Hi Charles,

I would look in music stores, because many guitar effect units, etc. are the
same size as routers and switches, and when bands are on tour, they need to
be able to be able to carry all that equipment around.

Try:

TIA,

Charles

Too bad your not staying in KC because I have a rack I would sell you!
Anyway, I found that music stores that sell amps/mixers usually sell those
type of boxes with the racks built in. I did some checking and they are
pretty reasonable and would fit the need. Anyway while your in KC you have
to hit the BBQ joints, like KC Masterpiece, Gates, Boardroom BBQ, and just
about every other place listed in the phone book. Also, I'm not sure where
your coming from, but it's cold here...25-40 degrees without wind chill.
Hope you have a good time in KC!

A routing loop will generally bounce back and forth between two
interfaces when you do a traceroute. Host unreachable just means the box
is down and a route still remains for it.

It means the destination network is unreachable due to an access list on a
router somewhere along the way.

Re: excessive collisions

2000-11-20 Thread Erick B.

If this is a fast ethernet interface, what are the
speed/duplex settings on the router port and the
device its connecting to? You shouldn't see collisions
at 100full unless theres a equipment problem. If you
have mis-configured speed/duplex or auto-negoation
mismatchs then you could see collisions, late
collisions, alignment errors, etc.

As for this happening at 2-3pm, anything happening in
your network at that time (broadcast storm, network
backup, etc)? I'd do a sniffer trace and see what that
reveals.

As for DEC21140, thats the chipset used on the
Ethernet interface.

Re: !H not a complete answer

2000-11-20 Thread Phillip Heller

  From cisco:

"If the router receives a datagram which it is unable to deliver
to it's ultimate destination because it knows of no route to the
destination address, it replies to the originator of that
datagram with an ICMP Host Unreachable message."

An access-list denying icmp echo-requests will simply not permit
the forwarding of icmp echo-requests. From the use of ping, this
would be observed as timeouts rather than "Host Unreachable" or "!H".

You may want to take a look at Anvil Cases. I know a lot of instructors use
them when they're hauling equipment. They'll also make it to your
specifications depending upon how large or small you would like it to be.

Here's there site

RE: !H !H !H!H

2000-11-20 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

On the traceroute command:

!H is returned 3 times if an access list prevents a router from forwarding the
packet to the HOST. The 'trace' command is used to determine the route taken
to a remote host. All the hops are shown as the trace probe moves toward the
destination. Three probes are issued. The response time of each probe will

The trace command returns a N if the network is unreachable.
The P is the response if the protocol is unreachable.
An * is a timeout.
!H is the return for what I said above but it is regarding a traceroute

Technically MPOA is LANE version 2, so all they are doing is removing
the old LANE version 1 stuff, which makes sence - do away with the old
:)

The operation of LANE 1 and 2 are subtly different, particularly with
multicast IIRC, so I guess what they are saying is dont worry about the
old stuff.

Re: Router Flight Cases

2000-11-20 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

For your purposes, music cases probably are the best alternative.

The cases that training partners use meet International Air Transport
Association (IATA) criteria. If you are looking for a high-quality
case that is shipped routinely, that is your major air freight
standard. Typically, we had to refurbish the 3/4" plywood cases
every year, while the aluminum ones lasted a bit longer. Of course,
these were being shipped every week.

I did see an Army Special Operations Command case that was qualified
to airdrop a 4000 router, along with some crypto gear. Ummm...that's
airdrop WITH a parachute.

I thought the original question was in regard to traceroute results and not

On the traceroute command:

!H is returned 3 times if an access list prevents a router from forwarding
the
packet to the HOST. The 'trace' command is used to determine the route
taken
to a remote host. All the hops are shown as the trace probe moves toward
the
destination. Three probes are issued. The response time of each probe will

be displayed if successful.

The trace command returns a N if the network is unreachable.
The P is the response if the protocol is unreachable.
An * is a timeout.
!H is the return for what I said above but it is regarding a traceroute
command,
and not a ping.

RE: GSR and Ethernet0

Title: RE: GSR and Ethernet0

The E0 on the GSR RPS is strictly for management purposes and will not route.  Just get a 2924 with an SX GBIC and you have ethernet.  If you can afford a $30K Gig Line card then a $2000 switch should be no problem.

I have always seen the !H replies when there is not a route to the
destination and when there is an access-list blocking the router then the
reply is !A using traceroute.

prevents a router from forwarding a packet to the HOST.

RE: !H

2000-11-20 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Here are some of the error codes you may see when pinging or doing a
traceroute:

*---The probe timed out
?---Unknown packet type
A---Administratively blocked (i.e. access list)
Q---Source quench
P---Protocol unreachable
N---Network unreachable
U---Port unreachable
H---Host unreachable

H means host unreachable. Jumping to the conclusion that there's a routing
problem isn't logical (though I know that what's the Tech Note document
says.) The host could be turned off. A host unreachable happens when the
last-hop router tries to ARP for the device and doesn't get a response.

They really watered down the Internetworking Troubleshooting Guide in that
Tech Note. I recommend reading the real one here:

RE: !H !H !H!H

2000-11-20 Thread JL

!H simply means that the host is unreachable. Whether this is because of an
access list or that the host is disconnected or turned off is left to the
imagination of the person receiving the !H notification. Odds are that
unless you have physical access to the host in question you will not ever
learn why the host was unreachable.

Re: !H !H !H!H

2000-11-20 Thread Chris Larson

Even if this was correct you cannot simply by getting an !h say that this is
from an access-list. There are many reasons for a host unreachable message.

Also, from most workstations (Windows that is), you will simply get a
timeout and neither !A or !h from packets being denied by an access-list.

Are you sure? Page 1163 of Cisco IOS Configuration Fundamentals states that
the character A signifies that the destination is "Administratively
Unreachable. Usually, this output indicates that an access list is blocking
traffic."

Re: Locked Console`

2000-11-20 Thread Rodgers Moore

I've had a similar problem when I loaded an IOS that was able to fit in
flash, but I didn't have the recommended amount of RAM installed on the
router.Another possibility is the baud rate has been configured on the
console port, so it runs default 9600 up until the config file is loaded
then runs at the new speed set in the config file.

RE: !H not a complete answer found it, but confused........help chuck!!

2000-11-20 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

First of all, this is very confusing. I have in front of me right now two
very different resouces regarding !A and !H. The first is the one I sent and
what I learned in school and is the correct answer on exams that I have taken.
That was the ref I sent to 'intro to cisco router configuration' that i sent
earlier from pages 230, chapter 9, where it states !H means blocked acces to
host due to access list.

Now, the rest i this is a printing of what i got from cisco command ref
on-line and it says exactly what you told me, which was the !A meant a problem
with an access list that was adminstratively unreachable.

What is really strange about this, it that these two conflicting statements,
one saying !H is a reject due to access lists and the other !A means rejected
due to access lists are both ciso ref's. My book is cisco press. So what's
up with that

Did someone goof and maybe a type-o, or are they both correct?

As I sit and comptemplate this, the reading in the cisco book, says
!H is sent when the PROBE IS RECEIVED but blocked due to an access list.

and on line-
!A is sent when administratively unreachable due to an access list.
!H is sent when host is unreachable.

Are these two things the same and one, which I doubt, and if that is the case,
what is the differences between the two.

I would really like to know and need some imput. Chuck

The rest of this I did not write: I copied it from on-line under cisco command
ref troubleshooting commands under traceroute.
=

Table 118: IP Trace Text Characters Char Description

For each node, the round-trip time in milliseconds for the specified number

A

list is blocking traffic.

H

Re: R/S Lab Changes

2000-11-20 Thread Peter Van Oene

IS-IS is a routing (routeing really) protocol that can provide routing services for
both CLNP (the network protocol in CLNS's network service) as well as for IP. Hence,
although you may not be required to setup and route CLNP, it may be that you have to
setup IS-IS to route IP (which involves a little CLNP)

However, I would read it and learn it anyway. If you have a solid grasp on OSPF, you
won't find it a challenge to pick up. Furthermore, by contrasting the two you may
enhance your knowledge of both. Finally, I assume you want to work after you pass the
test and it is not all that unlikely that you will encounter IS-IS at some point.

CBAC - IPSEC tunnel to the PIX

2000-11-20 Thread Liwanag, Manolito

I have a remote branch that I want to change from a frame connection to
Corporate to an ADSL connection.

I currently have a 1604 router in that branch. The 1604 has a bri module on
it. Is it possible to buy a wic for that router that supports ADSL ? or do I
have get a 1700 ?

Second question:

With an ADSL connection to the internet, I want to create an access list
with CBAC to connect the private inside network out to the internet to our
PIX at corporate. I will block most traffic coming in from the internet. I
will also need to create an IPSEC tunnel to our pix. Can anybody give me
some feedback on this line of thinking. I think it will work :D

Re: Router Flight Cases

2000-11-20 Thread Craig Columbus

As someone who's owned and used the various makes of cases, I can recommend
two: Anvil and SKB.
Anvil isn't the cheapest, but they're the best in my opinion. SKB is also
very good, but is plastic instead of wood or aluminum. Don't let the
plastic scare you off though...they make ATA and mil-spec stuff. If you're
going to be moving the equipment yourself, a standard case will do. If
you're going to be shipping the equipment, spring for the shock-mount case.

Just my $0.02...

First of all, this is very confusing. I have in front of me right now two
very different resouces regarding !A and !H. The first is the one I sent
and
what I learned in school and is the correct answer on exams that I have
taken.
That was the ref I sent to 'intro to cisco router configuration' that i
sent
earlier from pages 230, chapter 9, where it states !H means blocked acces to
host due to access list.

Now, the rest i this is a printing of what i got from cisco command ref
on-line and it says exactly what you told me, which was the !A meant a
problem
with an access list that was adminstratively unreachable.

What is really strange about this, it that these two conflicting statements,
one saying !H is a reject due to access lists and the other !A means
rejected
due to access lists are both ciso ref's.

Are these two things the same and one, which I doubt, and if that is the
case,
what is the differences between the two.

I would really like to know and need some imput. Chuck

The rest of this I did not write: I copied it from on-line under cisco
command
ref troubleshooting commands under traceroute.

Table 118: IP Trace Text Characters Char Description

ICMP Destination Unreachable Codes

2000-11-20 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

Beware of learning the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) just from
Cisco sites. ICMP is specified by the IETF, not Cisco. It's used by all IP
devices, not just Cisco devices. Cisco describes it in variously strange
ways that cannot be trusted. Learn it from the actual specification, which
is RFC 792. Here's the possible values for the code field that accompanies
a Destination Unreachable ICMP message, according to RFC 792:

0 Network unreachable
1 Host unreachable
2 Protocol unreachable
3 Port unreachable
4 Fragmentation needed and don't-fragment (DF) bit set
5 Source route failed

It's important to be able to distinguish the difference between not having
a route to a network, which could happen anywhere along the path, and not
being able to forward the packet to the final destination, which only
happens at the last hop. Not having a route would result in a Network
Unreachable which Cisco displays as N. When the last-hop router can't
forward the packet to the end node, the code is Host Unreachable, which
Cisco displays as H.

Generally what has happened when you see an H is that the final router sent
an ARP to try to forward the packet, didn't get a response, and sent back
to the source an ICMP Destination Unreachable, code = Host Unreachable.
Other situations can result in H, but this is the usual case.

Updated ICMP codes are listed in RFC 1700, the Assigned Numbers RFC. RFC
1700 adds some new codes that allow a router to be more specific in
describing the routing or forwarding problem. Administratively Prohibited
codes (which Cisco displays as A) are in this NEW list. That's why there's
some argument about it. Older implementations of ICMP don't use the A
codes. Administrative (i.e. security or access list) blocks could happen
anywhere in the path or at the end node. So you could see A instead of N or H.

Here's the new list of codes, according to RFC 1700:

0 Network Unreachable
1 Host Unreachable
2 Protocol Unreachable
3 Port Unreachable
4 Fragmentation Needed and Don't Fragment was Set
5 Source Route Failed
6 Destination Network Unknown
7 Destination Host Unknown
8 Source Host Isolated
9 Communication with Destination Network is Administratively Prohibited
10 Communication with Destination Host is Administratively Prohibited

RE: !H !H !H!H

2000-11-20 Thread Jennifer Cribbs

I found a ref regarding !A a few minutes ago. It is nearly exactly the same
as what I had thought about the !H. Is one a misprint maybe, and if not, why
do they have two of them, and what is the purpose of two returns that could be
the same thing?

The only souce I can find on this is on the cisco command ref on-line under
troubleshooting commands. It states that !A is returned when a network is
administratively unreachable due to an access list. I found that a few
minutes ago and Donald I forwarded that to you.

However, it implies in my router book the exact same thing regarding !H. What
it actually says there, (cisco press) is that the probe is received but not
forwarded due to an access list, where !H is received.

What is the difference between the two?

If this is a fast ethernet interface, what are the
speed/duplex settings on the router port and the
device its connecting to? You shouldn't see collisions
at 100full unless theres a equipment problem. If you
have mis-configured speed/duplex or auto-negoation
mismatchs then you could see collisions, late
collisions, alignment errors, etc.

As for this happening at 2-3pm, anything happening in
your network at that time (broadcast storm, network
backup, etc)? I'd do a sniffer trace and see what that
reveals.

As for DEC21140, thats the chipset used on the
Ethernet interface.

humbled before everyone. And I do understand. I was just telling my husband
about this and he laughed. He is used to me thinking I am always correct.

The good thing about this, is that I have learned about !A and !H and I want
to thank everyone. The real world is different and you wait guys...I will be
there one day.

CIT 2 / Support test - passing grade?

2000-11-20 Thread Dale Bewley

I'm taking this test on 11/30, but I can't find what the passing
percentage is. Is this supposed to be a secret or something?
What is it?
