Hello,

I'm trying to set up a IPSec between a PIX (branch
office) and router (central office). All PCs at branch
office share 1 ip address. IPSec seems to be working
fine because clients can ping/telnet/email/map drives
from/to central office. The problem is they can't
logon NT domain. They can ping domain controller
though.

Any idea why they can't log on NT domain? (The
machines were already added to domain)

Thanks in advance.

I thought the cd in the Wendal Odom CCNA guide was excellent, though I also
used Todd Lammle's Study Guide and cd which I thought was closer to the real
test. Review well and take the test; it didn't seem that tricky to me at
all, just covered a lot of new territory.

Hi,

Does the network configured to work with the 10.x.x.x addresses as a C
class ?
If you do it sometimes cause a lot of problems with NBT so just for argument
sake try configuring two computers with a true C class or a True B class and
than try.

 I hope it helps

To minimise traffic on WAN links, point the ntp to the next hop router
back towards the

Make sure you have either WINS or lmhost files. Make sure the router IOS is
12.1(3) or later. Turn of CEF if it's on.
You say the clients can map network drives, can they browse Network
Neighborhood?
Are the clients NT or 95/98? You say email works, is it Outlook/Exchange or
POP?

RE: Wireless Networking

Thats a silly comment. They compete directly and have very similar product
lines. As a side note, I happen to prefer Foundry due to my past
experiences and it does deliver better bang for the buck and features at
wire speed (ie, that don't melt the router if you turn them on). Juniper
does also. Cisco may figure it out one day, or just continue to hemorage
market share.

Make sure that your Pix is allowing the NBT. If not open a port for it.
Also, if you are not using WINS, configure an ip helper address.

Re: IBD

2000-12-07 Thread Atef Rostom

If you meanIDB, the following is from "Designing Cisco Networks" Module2,
Section 3

Interface Description Blocks (IDBs) provide a central location in memory for
storing information about network interface cards for use by driver code. An
IDB must be able to represent all kinds of interfaces, including
subinterfaces. Therefore, IDB data structures use a lot of memory. To avoid
problems with memory usage, the Cisco IOS software limits the number of
IDBs.
The current IDB limit is 300. Each physical interface on the router, whether
it is configured or not, and whether it is active or shut down, uses up one
IDB.

Each configured channel on a channelized interface (such as the MIP) uses
one IDB. For example, if a MIP T1 port has 24 configured channels, the
interface uses a total of 24 IDBs.

Each configured subinterface also uses one IDB. For example, if an FSIP port
configured for Frame Relay has 10 configured subinterfaces, the interface
uses up a total of 11 IDBs (one for the physical interface and one each for
the subinterfaces).

Only the subinterfaces use IDBs, not Frame Relay permanent virtual circuits
(PVCs). For example, if a Frame Relay interface has ten PVCs, but does not
use any subinterfaces, it uses only a single IDB. If a Frame Relay interface
has two subinterfaces each terminating five PVCs (for a total of ten PVCs at
the interface), it uses three IDBs.

RE: What cisco router platforms are usually deployed for BGP full routes(ie, 75000) ?

2000-12-07 Thread Evan Francen

Cisco recommends that in order to accept full BGP tables, you should have a
minimum of 128MB of RAM. The smallest router in the Cisco line that
supports this much RAM is a 3640 (7200 and 12000 would also work fine,
obviously). For partial routes, it depends on how "partial." Some ISPs
won't give you the option. I would not go with anything less than a 3600
series. For default route, it depends on the traffic/options you want to
employ. A 2500, 2600, 3600, etc. would work fine.

My 2 cents.

Evan

Subject: What cisco router platforms are usually deployed for BGP full

Hi,

while I'm reading Halabi's book, I'm getting curious.

Please let me know what cisco router platforms are usually deployed
for BGP full routes? In addition to that, what are platforms for
partial routes and for default routes only?

Thanks in advance.

***RHM We have a huge network, with Cisco switch 5500, 6509, 8500, every
type of router from the very small to the 7500.
I have deployed 11mbs wireless through out this origination and it works
fine. It is true it is limited by distance (500ft) but you solve this by
placing your wireless access points to cover all areas and over lap each
other. The new format we are testing at 22mbs and in about 8 month the 54
mbs version will arrive. This is a great solution and will make you shine
with your CFO. The new Access points we are testing will do layer 4 QOS, IP
routing, IGMP snooping VoIP , 100 node multi point telnet EAP security, just
to mane a few.
It goes thru all walls, I have my access points place in the wire closets
and I know our users are not there. I have also found transmission going two
floors down into the buildings lobby. Thank god for 128 bit encryption.

And just for the record I totally disagree with your reference to the vlan
routing and the 6509. Do you know they will do layer 4 switching? The 6509
is a awesome switch with lots of compatibilities. Have you even worked with
one? It comes with the NFFC card and already will route at layer 3. Please
clarify.

Sure, your place is idle for that

Depends on the cabling requirement on your site.
If free run cable is acceptable. The cost is low.
If conduit and pipe work is a must. Then Wireless may be a cheaper solution.

> If we have to stay wired, what switch would you recommend?

If you don't need VLAN and VLAN routing. I suggest Catalyst 6509.
If you need VLAN and VLAN routing, I suggest you not to use Cisco.
Let's try Extreme or Foundry

> Does wireless really only go up to 11MB?

For a 802.11 Wireless LAN, yes. but in a limit distant only. And it must be
an open
area. Not block by wall.
If the env is not idel. It will step down to 5MB, 2MB then 1MB.

2000-12-07 Thread A. Geoffrey Cauchi

Core routers are usually used for full BGP routing tables, typically 12000
and 7000 series routers. All other routers can be used for partial and
default routes.

These days most companies will use a router that can do 128MB minimum.
Although 64MB can still cut it with a limited number of peers. CPU is
also important.

3640's are very popular, and they work well. Alot of people use the
migration to 3660 which has a very fast processor and can take their
exisiting 3640 modules. 3620 could also be used, but it has the 64MB
limitation. CPU works however.

Larger ISP's prefer the 7206vxr, which has an excellent price point, fast
processors, and is very service provider centric.

7000's and 7500's are also used where high density is a concern. Usually
however, high density is not a function of the borders of most
providers...they will deploy 7200's for the border and the larger
chassis like 7000/7500 can be populated with more dense blades.

The 7000 is still a very good value. We slam them with serial ports and
use them to serve t1 customers (32 t1's per box). An 8 port serial blade
is only $500 or so for a 7000. Compare that to a 4 port blade on a 3600
that would run $2000 easy. 7000's can have the RP/(S)SP swapped out with
a RSP7000 which essentially turns the 7000 into a 7500 with RSP1. So long
as the 7000 can do 64MB (RSP7000 and RP64 can do 64MB) then it can do BGP
today and keep up.

2600's fell behind for a while. The cpu couldn't cut it, but it was fine
on memory. Now that cisco has the 265x and above out, they are contenders
in the BGP game once again.

So basically if you have 64MB and a decent cpu, it is a common router for
BGP. You can do BGP on a 2501.don't get me wrongI am
talking about a full table however.

2650
3620/40
7206

those are probably the most popular for customers doing bgp. 7000/7500
and some other more legacy hardware may be found however.

RE: tough VPN question

2000-12-07 Thread Jim Brown

Jim,

Are the remote clients using WINS or static mappings in the HOST or LMHOST
file to identify the PDC/BDC?

If not, the remote clients have no way of locating the PDC or BDC from a
remote network unless you forward the broadcasts.

This sounds like the issue if you have the ability to manually map drives
without the use of the browser service.

Hello,

I'm trying to set up a IPSec between a PIX (branch
office) and router (central office). All PCs at branch
office share 1 ip address. IPSec seems to be working
fine because clients can ping/telnet/email/map drives
from/to central office. The problem is they can't
logon NT domain. They can ping domain controller
though.

Any idea why they can't log on NT domain? (The
machines were already added to domain)

Thanks in advance.

That indeed is the lowest price on the Switching book, ISBN 1578700949, CCIE

it for $49, with a further 10% discount if you're a member of their

Re: Access list & chat

2000-12-07 Thread Bharat Suneja

You can build your access lists without specifying hosts by using "any" as
source & destination addresses and specify the ports for FTP & IRC.
Web-based chats may be difficult to control, and people use buddy-list
programs to chat as well. If you want to stop those, you'll have to find out
the ports they use and block those. Don't forget the implicit "Deny All"
that's taken for granted with each access list, so after blocking those
ports you'll have to insert an allow all statement as well.

Hope this helps. Refer to IOS documentation for the exact syntax.

RE: tough VPN question

2000-12-07 Thread Scott Morris

Your problem is likely the propgation of broadcasts... Or lack thereof.
One thing you can do (I'm assuming you have a router before (LAN-side) the
PIX) is set up an ip-helper address to forward UDP-level broadcasts (like
138/139 Netbios) to the NT server.

The other thing you can do is bypass that broadcast thought process by using
LMHosts files on the workstations at the branch office. That will pre-load
(if you use the #PRE designation) the NetBIOS cache and give you IP
addresses to go to. So if you have IP reachability, things will work just
fine then.

In LMHOSTS. :

(ip address) (Netbios name) #PRE #DOM:(domain name if domain controller)

Also, to refresh without rebooting the PCs, "nbtstat -R"

Hope this helps!

office share 1 ip address. IPSec seems to be working
fine because clients can ping/telnet/email/map drives
from/to central office. The problem is they can't
logon NT domain. They can ping domain controller
though.

Any idea why they can't log on NT domain? (The
machines were already added to domain)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Wireless Networking

2000-12-07 Thread Perry Lucas

Not really. The ServerIron and BigIron product lines are targeted for
DotCom and Enterprise datacenters as well as the FastIron switches. That is
how foundry made its debut into the market and is gaining market share. I
imagine that is one of the reasons Cisco made the acquisition of Arrowpoint
to begin competing on more equal ground with Foundry products.
I agree with you on the fact that you get more bang for you buck with
the Foundry switches and I have coordinated three deployments myself of
their products, all of which were in the DotCom market space. I will
concede their products are working their way down the vertical into the
wiring closest and small to medium business markets BUT there are other
considersations to hardware choices and deployment beyond just how well they
perform. One that I find most important is the amount of available support
for Cisco products than Foundry products.
In any case, to get back on topic with the orginal message that started
this thread. The company in question is also looking at implementing VoIP
technology in the near future. (VoIP was discussed in an offline
correspondance) Based on that and the first look glimpse that we were given,
I personally believe Cisco would be a more appropriate vendor choice at this
time.

RE: tough VPN question

2000-12-07 Thread Tracy Blackmore

You need to make sure ports 137, 138, and I think 139 are clear both ways.
NetBIOS over IP uses these ports to authenticate to a Microsoft Domain. As
Robert said, you will need to manually update the lmhosts file on the
clients if browser traffic is not passing the tunnel.

Does the network configured to work with the 10.x.x.x addresses as a C

If you do it sometimes cause a lot of problems with NBT so just for argument
sake try configuring two computers with a true C class or a True B class and
than try.

 I hope it helps

Re: What cisco router platforms are usually deployed for BGP full routes(ie, 75000) ?

2000-12-07 Thread suaveguru

actually many routers can do full routes , partial
routes and default routes , for example 25xx, 26xx,
36xx etc

whether they can accept full routes or not depend on
your DRAM , usually 64mb will be sufficient but I will
personally prefer 128mb DRAM for optimal performance

hope that helps

RE: Great Deal on CCIE LAN Switching book!!

2000-12-07 Thread Joseph Ezerski

I noticed that Wal-Mart.com has a significant number of Cisco Press books in
the $40+ range. I received my order confirmation and I am awaiting
delivery. I had it sent via regualr ground mail, so it may take a week or
so. If everything checks out, I may order more. Currently, I am preparing
to take the CIT exam to complete my CCNP. However, the CCIE is my next
lofty goal, so my library has found itself expanding at a very fast pace.

That indeed is the lowest price on the Switching book, ISBN 1578700949, CCIE
Professional Development: Cisco LAN Switching. Booksamillion.com also sells
it for $49, with a further 10% discount if you're a member of their
"Millionaire Book Club" - for $44.10 after the Club discount. Club
membership is $5/year, and it pays off with the first book you buy. I've
often found them offering the lowest prices on any Cisco Press book - I
recently bought the Cisco Press BSCN book for $42, including shipping.
Checked back a couple of days ago, and they'd raised the rates back to the
list price of $60. :-)

ISDN Switch Type basic-net3 - Question- Chuck or Priscilla any input?

Dear folks,

I would like to do some research on the strange behavior of the switch =

Usually when a show ISDN status command is done and an ISDN BRI is =
correctly configured

it will show the physical layer as "ACTIVE" unless backup interface =

When backup commands are in use the output of the show isdn status show =
the physical

physical layer as "DEACTIVATED" and no backup commands are being used. =
This causes some

confusion where I work at. Anyway, I would like to research this further =
but seems like the CCO

is only interested in how to enter this switch type in a router =
configuration and other sources which

I have looked are very sketchy on information on the switch capabilites. =
Any information

would be appreciated.

Cisco vs. HP Switches

2000-12-07 Thread Denis A. Baldwin

We are looking at four new 24 port switches for our network. We have Cisco
and HP as our final contenders. Both the HP Procurve and the Cisco
Catalyst carry similar specs, but the HP is about 20% of the cost of the
Cisco. Can someone give me a REAL reason why the Cisco Catalyst would be a
better choice. Our network is all 10/100 for now and we won't need Gigabit
for at least a couple of years. We need these switches to be in 24 port
configurations as the company is going to split in two in a couple of months
and move half of the operations to another building, so we need to be able
to split the network as needed. I know this is a Cisco group, which is why
I am asking it here, because I want a BIASED opinion of why Cisco would be
better in this situation. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Upgraded Flash in my 2501 - Weird???

2000-12-07 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I just got my 8MB Flash SIMM which I within seconds placed in my first 2501
and did a COPY TFTP FLASH.

After it erased the Flash (which was already empty) it got half way
whereafter it timed out and the checksum was bad (of course).

I tried three times in a row just to make sure it was not just a glitch, and
I restarted my TFTP server (the free one from Cisco running on an NT 4.0),
but the same thing happened everytime.

I knew that the IOS image (igs-in-l.110-22.bin) which I had received from
TAC was good, because I had replaced my older image (in10350n) with it a
couple of weeks ago on my 4MB Flash SIMM.

However, to start troubleshooting, I changed back to my 4MB Flash SIMM
again, and did a COPY TFTP FLASH to see if the IOS image now was defect, but
that went through very well.

Okay, I then changed back again to my 8MB Flash SIMM, did a COPY TFTP FLASH
and asked it to get the older IOS image, and this time it went through the
entire process without any problems. I then tried the newer IOS image, and
this time it worked.

Are there some newer IOS images you cannot load to flash if you are booted
up on Boot ROM's (mine are IGS-RXBOOT version 10.2(5))???

It works fine now, I just thought it was a little weird.

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Ole

RE: Publishing Date?

The last time I spoke to him he said he was doing the final edits on the
book.

Amazon lists it as March 2001 and they are generally correct, as the
Editor's of the book are sure to keep Amazon and such updated with release

RE: how does traffic from CAT55 switch moule to Route switch modu le (RSM)?

2000-12-07 Thread Yurchenko, Michael

RSM uses virtual connections to the switch fabric. If you put a vlan port on
the rsm and then assign this same vlan to one of the switchports, then you
should be able to connect to the rsm via that port. vlan interfaces are
virtual interfaces between the switch and the rsm.

Sorry , I send again, as I want to add one more question

Dear all,

1)I have a cat 55 switch which got 2 X 10/100BaseTX Ethernet module and 1 X
Route Switch Module (RSM), so, I have 48 ports on the switches module and
divided into 3 VLANs some of ports were set to VLAN 1, 2 3, and the RSM
module is connect thru our WAN router to world, and RSM, the layer 3 device
is used to route the traffic between VLANs but I don't know how does the
traffic from the switches module do to RSM module as there is no cable
connection or it do internally?

2)I found my RSM module is configured 3 VLANs inteface, 100.100.100.99,
100.100.200.99, 100.100.300.99, but I can't see there are phyiscal
interface. Why?

Below shown the conf, sometarou is the switch module and SOMETAROU is the
RSM module

3)From the sh cdp nei configuration in the switch module below, I wonder why
only VLAN1 connect to RSM module, I thought we configured VLANs 1 2 3 in
switches module

I run a network that has a mix of Catalyst and ProCurve switches in it. I
use the ProCurve stuff quite a bit for desktop/local wiring closet
connections.

Frankly, it's really nice hardware, and I love it. Config is accomplished
through a menu-based interface, which is kind of a pain in the butt when
you're trying to do a lot of config in a short time, but you can also tftp
config files into the switches. I greatly prefer the command line.

The ProCurve hardware supports virtual stacking/clustering, CoS, etc.
The ProCurve hardware also carries a lifetime warranty. You let the magic
smoke out of a switch, and they'll send you a new one.

The Catalyst stuff has a lot more flexibility with respect to config,
which shouldn't surprise you much. Some of the Catalyst stuff also has an
upgrade path to allow you to do inline power to the ports for IP phones,
if that's something you want to look at later on.

Hub-to-Switch connectivity issue

2000-12-07 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Okay...I've been digesting the responses I've received about this issue, and
what I've come up with can be reduced to two comments:

1) The fact that flipping the MDI/MDI-X switch didn't initially work leads
me to believe that I wasn't using it right. The fact remains that
connecting a hub to a switch must be accomplished using a crossover cable.

2) Why is that? It's true that connecting devices at different layers of
the OSI model requires a straight-through cable, and that connecting devices
at the same layer requires a crossover cable. So isn't it true that
switches are layer 2, and hubs are layer 1? No. Hubs are actually layer 2
devices, and here's why: while a hub may not understand or care about source
and destination MAC addresses, checksums, or what's in the "type" field, it
*does* know the rules of CSMACD communication, and has to play by the same
rules as other layer 2 devices. Therefore, hubs can be considered Layer 2
devices, and thus must be connected to switches with a crossover cable.

Anyone see anything wrong with my synopsis above? Let me know. Just be
careful with your caps lock key. ;-)

Thanks,

BJ

Save file in WINNT\SYSTEM32\Drivers\ETC directory.
You have to copy this file on every PC. the same folder.

Dear folks,

I would like to do some research on the strange behavior of the switch =

Usually when a show ISDN status command is done and an ISDN BRI is =
correctly configured

it will show the physical layer as "ACTIVE" unless backup interface =

When backup commands are in use the output of the show isdn status show =
the physical

layer as "DEACTIVATED". This switch type is used in Europe has the =
behavior of showing the=20

physical layer as "DEACTIVATED" and no backup commands are being used. =
This causes some

confusion where I work at. Anyway, I would like to research this further =
but seems like the CCO

is only interested in how to enter this switch type in a router =
configuration and other sources which

I have looked are very sketchy on information on the switch capabilites. =
Any information

would be appreciated.

Obligatory "I passed BSCN!" post

2000-12-07 Thread Robert Yee

Hi All!

I took the Routing 2.0 exam this morning and suprisingly walked away with
908/1000. After completing the exam, I was fairly certain that I would be
back for another shot at it in a week or two, but I guess the network gods
were with me today.

The following is what I used to study from:

1. Courseware from BSCN: Very good. You have top read and understand ALL the
routing concepts. I skimmed through the Cisco Press BSCN book and I believe
that it is comparable o the courseware.

2. Boson test #1: Good. The Boson test is actually much easier that the real
thing. I had about 6 questions on the real test that I saw on Boson. Boson
will test your knowledge of the subject and I thnk it is a worthwhile
investment.

3. Routing TCP/IP from Jeff Doyle: Very Good. I didn't read through the
whole book. I used this book to clarify points that I did not understand on
the interior protocols.

4. www.cisco.com: Excellent. But you have to did a little for the info.

5. Study notes from www.routedpacket.com. Great! These are great to read the
night before the exam or right before you take it.

Overall, I though the exam was about the hardest one that I've ever taken. I
used educated guesses on a lot of the questions. The answers are all there
in front of you, I just applied the concepts that I knew and used the
process of elimination. It was ALL multiple choice.

WATCH OUT FOR ERRORS! I had a question that had a blatant error on it. Not
that there is anything you can do about it, I chose the 'best' answer that I
could.

Follow the test outline that Cisco has on their website, the test follows it
pretty closely.

KNOW the concepts behind the routng protocols!!! I can't emphasize this
enough. I had more questions that were analytical than memorization kind.

Hope this helps.

Robert

Hey everyone,

Don't forget the satellite uplinks to test that pesky delay!

On a serious note, do many of you have non-Cisco layer 2 or above devices
in your labs, other than servers/hosts? I realize this wouldn't help too
much with specific Cisco certification, but I imagine would be potentially
invaluable for real-world multi-vendor situations.

I got my hands on a cheap 3Com LanModem to play with RIP interoperability
(doesn't do much else, SFAIK) and I can use it for testing dial-backup.
Other than that, I play with Checkpoint FW-1 (primarily NT with a little
Solaris added in) but have yet to test with my 2600 CSIS. In due time

DTE to DTE uses cross-over cables.
Is this correct?

Hello,

in addition, consider that IPSEC does NOT deal whith Bcast/Mcast. If your
choice is to propagate them, you must specifie in the (extended) ACL controling
encrypted trafic something like "deny any 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0" and so on for
Mcast...
this fools me some month ago.

Intermittent ping problems with only one of 80 devices

2000-12-07 Thread David Toalson

I am using WhatsUp Gold to monitor about 80 devices on my network. It
is set to send a ping every 1 minute and monitor the response then
notify by - email, page, popup, log file when there is a missed ping. I
have most of my devices set to log all missed pings, but only notify
after 4 missed pings. We have one problem device that misses about 70
pings per day (there were 3 loss pings while writing this) and has been
doing this for about 4 weeks. I am monitoring 2 other devices on the
same subnet and 4 devices between WhatsUp and this device (I am also
pinging another 8 devices on the same side of the fiber link) with no
problems. Unfortunately the devices on the other side of the fiber are
controlled by my parent company and I have no direct access. My side is
all NT40 with Cisco (except one 3Com hub) running EIGRP with a fiber
link to the parent. The parent uses Bay with Novel (see below). I am
pinging devices 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. 12 is the only one
that is showing the lost pings (we are seeing down time for any of the
users). The network admin for the parent says it is caused by
collisions on the ping itself. WhatsUp is set to wait 5 seconds for a
response to any pings. I have been out to cisco.com and can not find
much on ping other than how to, so I have two questions. 1. Does a
router rebroadcast a ping if there is a collision? 2. Anything else
you can think of that would cause this to happen on only the one device
out of the 80?

Devices/layout:
1) NT Workstation --->
2) Cisco 1900 10mg switch --->
3) Cisco 2900 100mg switch >
4) Cisco 2524 router --- T1 frame relay --->
5) Cisco 7505 in --->
6) 3Com Hub with Fiber transceiver - traffic in one port and out another
only --->
6A) 1/4 mile fiber 10mg --->
7) Bay switch --->
8) Bay Router in --->
9) Bay switch --- frame relay --->
10) Bay switch ---> internal fiber --->
11) Bay switch --- >
12) Novel Server
13) 30 NT workstations with no down time reported (mostly telnet
sessions)

Thank you for reading this long message, all help will be appreciated.

Farooq,

You can just put your own together. Read the BGP guides on CCO, or a
chapter on BGP like in the BCSN book, or read the halabi book. Start
simple, with basic neighbor statments, maybe use examples in the books,
and then go from there...

Re: Intermittent ping problems with only one of 80 devices

2000-12-07 Thread Jonathan V Hays

1. First, the ping to this device is NOT a broadcast but a unicast packet. Second, the
Ethernet CSMA/CD algorithm will take care of retransmission due to collisions. IP/ICMP
layer is does not retransmit, but (as you know) a standard "ping" does wait for an
answer and tells you if it doesn't get a reply. So yes, the router's ethernet
interface
will retransmit a frame if it sees a collision, just like any other ethernet device.

2. If the problem is ethernet, it could be a flaky ethernet card or cable, but there
are
a lot of possibilities, including software doing too many broadcasts, bad port on a
hub/switch, etc. If possible, swap the cable from the evil machine (where it plugs into
the NIC) with a known-good machine on the same subnet that is being monitored by
Whatsup
and see if the problem moves.

Here's a Cisco URL for troubleshooting ethernet.

Hello,

Well, the ospf network type and the real network type are not realy dependent :
you may specifie an "ospf network-type point-to-multypoint" on a point-to-point
frame-relay sub-interface... Thus, you have to ensure all your interfaces are
specifieing the same network type, and it should work fine.

RE: Hub-to-Switch connectivity issue

2000-12-07 Thread Christopher Larson

1) I suppose that depends on the manufacturer. On most equipment placing
a striaght through cable on an MDI-X port makes it a crossover at the
port. That is the port is wired to cross 1,2,3 and 6 (hence the port
name MDI-X) so that you don't have to do it by changing the cable. So it
is not true that you MUST use a crossover cable per se, as the MDI-X
port does the crossing for you.

2) Hubs do not care about and have nothing to do with layer 2 at all.
Only layer 1. That being the physical connection. They simply repeat the
signals they recieve on one port out all other ports. Hubs do not know
the rule of CSMA/CD, they are manufactured to comply with the
requirements for physical connectivity. When a hub detects a collision
it does not respond to it except to sense that there was a voltage on
these pairs so I will make this little light turn red everytime I sense
voltage on these pairs. If a hub knew and participated in CSMA/CD, it
would backoff from transmitting everytime it sensed a collision and
before it ever repeated any data it would have to "listen" to the wire
before transmitting which it does not.

Subject: Hub-to-Switch connectivity issue

Okay...I've been digesting the responses I've received about this issue,
and
what I've come up with can be reduced to two comments:

1) The fact that flipping the MDI/MDI-X switch didn't initially work
leads
me to believe that I wasn't using it right. The fact remains that
connecting a hub to a switch must be accomplished using a crossover
cable.

2) Why is that? It's true that connecting devices at different layers
of
the OSI model requires a straight-through cable, and that connecting
devices
at the same layer requires a crossover cable. So isn't it true that
switches are layer 2, and hubs are layer 1? No. Hubs are actually
layer 2
devices, and here's why: while a hub may not understand or care about
source
and destination MAC addresses, checksums, or what's in the "type" field,
it
*does* know the rules of CSMACD communication, and has to play by the
same
rules as other layer 2 devices. Therefore, hubs can be considered Layer
2
devices, and thus must be connected to switches with a crossover cable.

Anyone see anything wrong with my synopsis above? Let me know. Just be
careful with your caps lock key. ;-)

Thanks,

BJ

Thanks to Helena...I passed BSCN 2.0 today!

2000-12-07 Thread Ariel

I met Helena on this forum. I hope all of you find someone as wonderful as
her.

My 1/2 cent on the Boson exam. Scored 850 +

Know your commands well. The show and router command format will be asked
of you. Know what mode the router must be in to enter the exam.
BGP for me was most of the test. Know the "basics", and commands. Know BGP
well or you will not do as well.
Then route optimization theories. Know route maps and stuff.
EIGRP was second in line. Understand how it interacts with redistribution
and NBMA.
RIP and IGRP show up only as Classful vs Classless. What are the attributes
of each?
OSPF, I can't recall one question.
Redistribution, about four questions.
Do you know how routing protocols pick best path? You should before going
in.

How did I study?
I listened to others on this forum. You will get lots of helpful tips from
others. So, that said, thank you everyone including yourself. Hope when
you pass a test you announce it here with some tips so we can congratulate
you.

I purchased the Exam Cram ISBN 1576106330 for BSCN Routing Exam 640-503. I
studied and lived this book for two weeks. This book provides a good
overview of what can be expected from the exam. However, not enough
material is provided. You will need to supplement this with a better book
or don't buy this. At the time I purchased this, no BSCN books were
available. Oh, there are some concepts like BGP and EIGRP similarities that
it does not explain well.

I then was approved, narrowly, to take the Cisco BSCN class. This was
helpful since there were issues with the book I was not clear on. I suggest
you always study before a class. Classroom is for review not as a fresh
introduction to material.didn't they teach you this in college? Cisco
BSCN is tough since it was my first Cisco class. So get lots of rest and
plan to stay till the end. BGP is introduced last, funny since it is the
bulk of the test. Stay late and do the labs

The NetCerts BSCN book was pretty good. The BGP part was great for
explaining the concept really well. Other than that, there are several
chapters I did not read. The chapters I skipped did not show up on the
test. Concentrate on IGRP, RIP, EIGRP, BGP, Route filters and
optimization...thats it!

Oh, the Cisco paper on the website 68 pages or so was not too helpful. If
you really want to know BGP, this is the way to go. But be sure to apply to
an ISP to get the most of it.
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ics/icsbgp4.htm

I'm a slow learner so it took me three months to study. Here is some tips:
Don't watch movies or television. BIG waste of time.
Make flash cards
Get Boson's first exam for BSCN. If you don't, send ME your $100.
Listen to yourself in traffic. Ha! Tape record the lessons and listen to
them instead of music or car horns.
Most of all, be good to your spouse and family. This will take a lot out of
them too.

I could tell you word for word what will be on the exam, but what good will
this do you. You will pass the exams just to get fired on the job for
incompetence.
Enjoy.

PIX floppy help

2000-12-07 Thread James Riggs

I am new to this list, and new to the PIX firewall. I just bought one and
was trying to back up the default config to a floppy disk before I start
playing with it. At first I was getting a message indicating that there was
no floppy installed. I opened the case and made sure the cables were
securely connected and the behavior changed. I no longer get an error, the
light on the drive indicates activity, but there are no files on the disk
when the “wr floppy” command finishes executing. If I try to change the
hostname and “wr floppy” the config, I would expect something to be on the
disk, or an error indicating that nothing could be written. Is there
anything that I am missing here, or does it just sound like a bad drive?

Thanks in advance

James Riggs

URT

2000-12-07 Thread Jeff Duchin

Okay guys and gals with a URT background

Since the new URT for CW2k LMS is not out yet, we had to purchase CWSI and
the old URT until the new one comes out (have to have dynamic vlans)

...anyways I just installed it in my test-bed today and wanted to know if
anyone has used this on MACs or Win2k machines. I read something on CCO
about MAC, Linux and Unix support (as well as WIN95/98/NT of course) but
wanted to get a heads up anything that might save me some grief.

Also, I've got everything running with CWSI and so far as I can tell
everything is configured as per the directions... but I can't seem to get my
test users (WIN95/NT) logged in. The URT.Bat is on the PDC and I pushed out
the Client to the Workstation... also made the URT logon Vlan and assigned
it to it's own vlan (2 as I wanted to keep it seperate from the management
vlan) with a 10.10.2.2/23 on the server and 10.10.2.1/23 on the router int.
I do have a helper-address for the DHCP server... do I need to add one for
the URT server?

Any replies much appreciated.

Re: VLSM

2000-12-07 Thread Ariel

Prefix = Subnet mask , I was very confused of this until recently. Most
books will go back and forth on the terms.

Classful: RIP1 and IGRP: Will not pass subnet mask in routing updates. So
you cannot use this with Summarization or VLSM. It restricts to classful
addresses. This means Class A, B, or C.

Classless: OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS, Supports VLSM. CIDR aka Supernetting.
You can adjust the subnet mask so not to restrict you to classul addresses.

VLSM: Variable Lenth Subnet Mask, I think of this as subnetting in a
subnet.

Get the Exam Cram book. It will give you an overview of the BSCN material.
This book helped me pretty good.

Re: tough VPN question

2000-12-07 Thread Travis Gamble

One thing I've noticed is that Windows tries to cache passwords. When they
first turn on their computer, they aren't generally connected to the VPN, so
they can't login normally at that point. Make sure they are still setup to
logon to the domain, even if they can't. Have them enter the correct
username and password at the login prompt, and just say "OK" when it
complains that it can't find a domain controller. Keep hitting OK until it
boots, without the domain controller. This will cache the correct
username/password combination, so that when it does try and connect to an NT
server, it will send the correct information. Also, as others have said,
make sure you have WINS or an LMHOSTS file working to allow them to find the
domain controller(s).

Hope this helps,

Travis Gamble

RFC Reading List

2000-12-07 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Idle curiosity, friends. Which RFC's are you reading?

I've read 1771 ( BGP4 ) and I am presently going through 1812 ( requirements
for IP routers )

1812 references a number of other RFC's, of which perhaps 1112 ( ICMP ) and
1256 ( ICMP Router Discovery Messages, 1120 ( requirements for internet
hosts )

I plan on looking through 2328 ( OSPF ) and 1519 ( CIDR ) I have a few more
printed out, things like TCP and ICMP and RIP

Other posting I have read over time and from various sources suggest 1997
 BGP Communities ), 2796 (BGP Route Reflection), 1965 ( BGP Communities )
and 1795 ( DLSw )

I have some others I printed out a while back. TCP, RIP, IP, if memory
serves

The Cisco site itself recommends reading RFC's, but makes gives no
specifics.

What are folks on this list reading? Recommending?
