ATM PVC VBR

2001-02-07 Thread mak

Dear all,

I would like to know is it any difference between two method of
configuring PVC
1. atm pvc 32 1 32 aal5snap 32000 32000
2. pvc 1/32
.
.

I am using method one, I have a problem is that I built a PVC between
two routers (12008 and 7507) running BGP, in-between is carrier network.
And the setting of carrier is VBR, I have set PVC on both routers as
VBR. Once I have booted up 7507, the speed is fast and normal, but after
several minutes, the speed is very slow. However, if I configure CBR -
within the range of VBR's SCR, the speed is normal and fast.

Is it any parameters I need to concern when I configure VBR?

Thanks

Regards,
Raymond

RE: routers for home lab

2001-02-07 Thread mjans001

Do not forget that practicing with reverse telnet is HANDY for the lab (do
not kill me if I am not right) so a 2509/11 would do great, only it has 2s
and 1e.

I am getting pretty used to telnetting into my 4 other routers/1 switch
trough my 2511.. octal cable.

Believe ccieprep.com has a labdocument where they state the use of the
reverse telnetting, also every CCIE book comes back on the subject.

RE: 2600 router - critical situation

2001-02-07 Thread Albert Lu

Did you get the initial bootup message? It could be the control break signal
is not going through because of your terminal program. Try using Teraterm.

If you are not getting the bootup message, is the power supply running ok?
Have you tried replacing the power supply? If you don't see any of the LEDs
come up, then it could be a power supply problem.

Could it be that the memory modules are loose?

What happened to the router since the last time you saw it work?

RE: why saw different load?

2001-02-07 Thread Mustafa Kemal Furat

The command bandwidth does not set the bandwidth of the serial port to the
value you assign ... it is used by the router to calculate routing metrics
for some routing protocols,
If you want to change the bandwidth of the port u shold better use "clock
rate" command...

RE: 2600 router - critical situation

2001-02-07 Thread Claussen, Ken

This happened to me last week. It turned out to be a problem with the router
resources. When you downloaded the IOS image it should have informed you
what the minimum Hardware required to run the image is (Flash and RAM, 2600
default 8/32). After upgrading the flash, there is not an IOS image, so
tftpdnld, as recommended by others, is your friend. I was loading the high
crypto image (Which is Huge 11MB) and had neglected to upload the RAM to
48MB from its standard 32MB. At this point you should download a smaller
image file from CCO and perform the tftpdnld with the smaller image. The
symptom I had was that the router would self corrupt the image while trying
to "self-decompress" and like you, my upgrade session was completed
successfully.

ATM ASRServer

2001-02-07 Thread Tiomthy Gray

I am working with a customer that has a 7509 running 11.3 code acting as
the ARP server for their ATM network of LS1010 switches. We have a
problem where one of the adapters falls out of the ATM ARP table. The
ARP server is supposed to check with this adapter before it flushes it
out of the table, but it doesn't. In fact, six minutes before it was
flushed, the adapter sent a ARP table update.

Is anyone aware of issues with the ATM ARPServer process not working
properly in IOS?

Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers

2001-02-07 Thread Cisco Engineer

Hi Folks,

I have a few Cisco 2501 routers all eith the same
startup problem. On startup, the routers behave
normal, but after the "Press RETURN to get started"
message, the routers come up with errors about the
ethernet and serial interfaces, restarts and then hang
up completely.

Thinking that the problem may be with the DRAM, Flash
or software, I have replaced these with ones from
other Cisco 2501 routers in good working condition,
but the problem remained the same. The typical output
from these routers is as shown at the end of this
posting.

Any good ideas will be appreciated.

Thank you.

RE: Cisco 1600 Router Down/Flapping ?

2001-02-07 Thread Liwanag, Manolito

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your tips and suggestions. How can I tell if it is the
cable or the interface that is the problem.

If I do a sh frame-relay lmi and don't see see the Num Status msgs Rcvd and
the Num Status Enq Sent incrementing plus I do a sh frame-relay pvc and the
status is inactive. Does this mean cable or interface problem. I am thinking
cable but not totally sure.

I think the cable is a cab-v35mt and cost about a $100usd. I don't want to
purchase that unless I know for certain that it is the problem. Actually
does anyone know of a place in Seattle that I can get that cable from. Last
time I had to order it from Cisco.

Thank you once again.

Hi,

do 'sh frame pvc' check what the status is. Does it indicate it is active,
Deleted, inactive. Is the pvc up and solid? (probably not)

Check the counters on the PVC as well.

Look at the serial interface and check for interface resets and/or
transitions. Is the physical link up and solid? (Maybe)

If the remote LMI and Physical are not tansitioning and the PVC is not
deleted then do the same for the end that is being called.

Have fun

Just some thoughts.

RE: 2600 router - critical situation

2001-02-07 Thread West, Karl

If you can't get the router to boot at all and you have a second(simillar)
2600 router,

remove the FLASH(SIMM/DIMM ??) from the router and put it in the bad router
and see if it will boot from the new flash.

I remember doing this once when the flash would not hold the config on my
router after I reboot. (yes I did a wri mem :0 )

Re: 2600 router - critical situation

2001-02-07 Thread John Neiberger

The break signal is dependent on the software you are using. For instance, if you are
using Procomm, it is Alt + B, so that might be another one to try. I haven't had any
experience with other terminal software recently, so I can't think of anything else
there.

Also, try hitting those key combinations several times. I've noticed that under the
right conditions, it takes a while for the break to take effect.

Keep us informed and we'll try to help you out however we can.

NMAP is a pretty powerful tool. For windows port scans I actually prefer a
program called superscan. If your interested in giving it a shot, try the
link below:
   http://www.foundstone.com/rdlabs/proddesc/superscan.html

It is not as good as nmap, but if your stuck on a windows box its a pretty
good choice.

 Hi All,

I found the answer to my question by doing a search on "port scanner"

Looks like the software is running on Unix, which means I am going to have
to learn another operating system. :)

Which version of Unix would you recommand? Seems to be hundreds of vendors
 out there!!!

 NMap Port scanner

  Details
A new version of NMap has been released. Nmap is used for security
auditing,
and the new version improves performance, stability and adds more
features.
Some of the new features are:

 1) Fast parallel pinging of all the hosts on a network to determine which
ones are up. You can use the traditional ICMP echo request (ping), TCP ACK
packet, or TCP SYN packet to probe for responses. By default it uses both
ACKs ICMP pings to maximize the chance of sneaking through packet
filters.
There is also a connect() version for under-privileged users. The syntax
for
specifying what hosts should be scanned is quite flexible.

 2) Improved port scans can be used to determine what services are running.
Techniques you can use include the SYN (half-open) scan, FIN, Xmas, or
Null
stealth scans, connect scan (does not require root), FTP bounce attack,
and
UDP scan. Options exist for common filter-bypassing techniques such as
packet fragmentation and the ability to set the source port number (to 20
or
53, for example). It can also query a remote identd for the usernames the
server is running under. You can select any (or all) port number(s) to
scan,
since you may want to just sweep the networks you run for 1 or 2 services
 recently found to be vulnerable.

 3) Remote OS detection via TCP/IP fingerprinting allows you to determine
what operating system release each host is running. This functionality is
similar to the awesome queso program, although nmap implements many new
techniques. In many cases, nmap can narrow down the OS to the kernel
number
or release version. A database of ~100 fingerprints for common operating
system versions is included, thanks to a couple dozen beta testers who
worked on the last 19 private beta releases.

 4) TCP ISN sequence predictability lets you know what sequence prediction
class (64K, time dependent, "true random", constant, etc.) the host falls
into. A difficulty index is provided to tell you roughly how vulnerable
the
 machine is to sequence prediction.

 5) Decoy scans can be used. The idea is that for every packet sent by nmap
from your address, a similar packet is sent from each of the decoy hosts
you
specify. This is useful due to the rising popularity of stealth port
scanning detection software. If such software is used, it will generally
report a dozen (or however many you choose) port scans from different
addresses at the same time. It is very difficult to determine which
address
is doing the scanning, and which are simply innocent decoys.

Re: Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers

2001-02-07 Thread John Neiberger

The only startup errors evident in this output is this:

Unknown or ambiguous service arg - udp-small-servers
Unknown or ambiguous service arg - tcp-small-servers
 Illegal IP keyword - classless

You're probably seeing this because you are running IOS 11.1(7), but your config is
pasted in from a router running at least 11.2. 11.1(7) apparently doesn't understand
these lines:

service udp-small-servers
service tcp-small-servers
ip classless

You can upgrade your IOS or remove those lines from your config. The status messages
about the interfaces are not strange in any way. They look quite normal, assuming the
ethernet port was connected to something but the serial ports were not.

HTH,
John

Re: yet another designated router question..

2001-02-07 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

One DR per multiacess subnet, and an optional BDR. Definitely not
one per area.

I was a reviewer of the first edition, but not the second. This
question has no ideal answer, because "ethernet segment" isn't as
precise as I'd like. Do bridged segments count (remember OSPF
multicasts, not broadcasts)? How about multiple VLANs on the same
physical segment (each will need a DR)? What if there are secondary
subnets on the physical segment (results can be flaky. Avoid.)?

Hi,

Isn't the Designated Router the one on a broadcast type domain that
all the routers decide should control the OSPF conversations to
avoid everybody doing it thus reducing traffic. If so then 'C'
would to me seem correct. As I understood it on a point to point
connection (which there may be many in an area or AS) you do not
elect a designated router.

RE: Another 802.3 and Ethernet Question

2001-02-07 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

I am also confused about the question itself.

The basic default behavior of Cisco routers is to try to identify the
protocol type of a frame, and send it either to the bridging code or
the router code for that protocol on that interface. If the
protocol type is not supported, drop the frame.

I don't know this, but I can reasonably assume that IP protocol
identification is hard-coded for the Ethernet II IP Ethertype and for
802.2 IP. IP might be treated as a special case, of which the router
is agnostic about encapsulation Still, the encapsulation should be
meaningful if and only if appropriate routing or bridging is enabled
for the interface.

ARP has a protocol type field so that wouldn't seem like the reason.

Okay, I have a guess...a total W.A.G., and I wasn't able to back it
up with some quick research, but here it is:

The answer to this has something to do with ARP packets. My guess
is that they assume the presence of Ethernet_II frames when
constructing ARP packets and these would be inoperable if some other
ethernet frame were being used.

That would explain why the default *had* to be Ethernet_II. If ARP
breaks, IP over ethernet breaks.

Am I right?? I'm going to keep digging to see if I can find some
more details about this. I may be chasing down the wrong street.
Let me know if I'm even close! :-)

John

OK, Leigh Anne, you're just going to have to come out and tell us what you
are getting at. The suspense is killing me. ;-)

The only time I've ever configured an Ethernet encapsulation, it has been
part of the ipx network command. As we know, Novell mucked things up and
supports four frame types, so being able to configure the frame type is
necessary for IPX. A unique feature of IPX is that you can configure
multiple networks on a single segment. Each of them must have a different
encapsulation. In fact that is how you support networks with devices
  configured for different encapsulations.

I don't even know that you can configure the encapsulation for IP on
Ethernet on a router. Can you? Or is that what you're getting at. IP
  doesn't care.

With IP, 99% of the world uses Ethernet V2 (dest, src, EtherType). I just
tried to change it on my PC and I couldn't, although I think I have seen
that capability on other PCs. But my guess is that if I did change it, the
  router could still handle it.

The AS models are newer. The biggest difference is whether they are 2509-RJ

within the range of VBR's SCR, the speed is normal and fast.

Is it any parameters I need to concern when I configure VBR?

about how the ARP packet is constructed. I see a little bit about it in my CIT study

RE: Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers

2001-02-07 Thread Maness, Drew

Do you have a TFTP server on the segment maybe with a file net-conf? It
could be pulling a bad configuration file from a tftp server. Also it might
be trying to pull a IOS image from a TFTP server that is not there. It
might have a boot system tftp command in the config. I assume you just got
these and you are experiencing the problem.

Try going into ROM mode and change the Configuration register to ignore the
start up config file (confreg 0x142). reload the router and see what the
config look like. I have a feeling it is looking for something off a TFTP
server. If you want you can make a copy of the config and then do a write
erase. Change back the Config Register to 0x2102 (Router#config-reg
0x2102). Reload the router and see if you get the same error.

Hope this helps

2511 Problems

2001-02-07 Thread Albert Lu

Hi All,

I've got a 2511 that I have had problems with, and I have managed to fix it.
The unit was having booting problems, and after hours on the phone with TAC
they concluded that there was hardware problems with the unit.

The 2511 has two SCSI ports, one for ASYNC ports 1-8 another for ASYNC ports
9-16. The ASYNC ports 9-16 is a daughterboard that sits on top of the
motherboard.

I decided to pull this daughterboard out, and it worked... woohoo!! =) Now
it is detected as a 2509, which it should be because it now has only 8 ASYNC
ports.

So now I'm scratching my head, wondering where I could get another
daughterboard for this 2511. It is not under warranty or service contract.

The boot rom on this unit is dead, so I also have to get new boot rom for
it. I've been told that Cisco gives them for free providing I pay for
shipping, but nobody seems to know over there at Cisco.

I wonder if anyone could give me some suggestions

Thanks

Albert

Re: The best place to put the access lists

2001-02-07 Thread Kelly D Griffin

The best place for ACL's is at the access layer. You want to deny or permit
packets the outer-most level you have control of. If you wait for their
packets to get into the core of your network, then you have already
compromised your network's security. If you do it at the router that your
customer connects to, you can deny things like routing protocols and subnets
that need not penetrate your network.

The best solution for security is a firewall. If security is a mission
critical application, a PIX should be used instead of ACL's.

I'm definitely with Howard on this one. I plan on taking the CID within a month and I
would expect scenarios to be on the test. How else would you really test design
skills?

I'm more worried that the test is just a bad test overall. I don't think I've read a
single good thing about any version of it. Perhaps I'll wait until the newest release
is out and I've heard some comment on that before I take it.

I was told by TAC that the boot roms are free if you have a service contract

you the upgrade kit for $300. Talk to me offline if you would like a set.

Subject: Strange problem with Cisco 2501 routers

 Thank you.

BRI Problem

I have 2 Cisco routers connected by 1 ISDN link between the two. Router A is
setup to receive calls and Router B is setup to place the calls. What is
happening is Router B makes the call but only 1 B channel is coming up. Both
B channels on router B are good and I get the following

Layer 1 Status:

I have set the dialer load threshold to 1 on Router B and it is using PPP

I have two dialer map statements on router B that calls the SPIDS on Router

When I do a Show dialer I get the following

Passed CCIE Written

2001-02-07 Thread Hal White

I passed the CCIE Written yesterday morning. I had taken the CCIE written
about a month ago but the test crashed and I had to fight with Cisco and
Prometric for a month before I could take it again for free. I read
Caslow's book, Routing TCP/IP Vol. 1 by Jeff Doyle, the token ring white
papers and the exam cram book. The token ring white papers were very
helpful in understanding bridging because I do not work with it at all. I
already had my CCNP and CCDP so this also helped and I would not recommend
taking the CCIE written without having finished at least your CCNP
certification. I also took the certification zone test before I took the
exam last month, and it was not that helpful.

I am planning to take schedule the lab for this summer. I am going to
purchase the Solutions Labs and the ccbootcamp labs today and use them to
study. I work for a Cisco reseller so I have plenty of equipment sitting
around to use for study labs. My company has said they will pay for
training so I am looking at Global Knowledge and IT Academy prep courses.
If anyone has any recommendations on training please let me know.

Access-List Statement Clearification Request

2001-02-07 Thread Reel, JohnX

--- Start ---
Statement: "You can only assign one access list per interface, per
protocol, or per direction"

Question 1: Would this be correct as to an overall general understanding of
this statement?

interface ethernet 0
 ip address 192.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 ip access-group 1 in
 ip access-group 2 out
 ipx access-group 3 in
 ipx access-group 4 out

Question 2: Can this possibly imply the following:
(intuition says not possible because there are duplicate access lists on
the single interface)

interface ethernet 0
 ip address 192.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
 ip access-group 1 in
 ip access-group 2 out
 ipx access-group 1 in
 ipx access-group 2 out

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

What is the purpose of the access lists?

Is there one router and one switch, or are there multiple points
where the lists need to be maintained?

How much CPU power is available on the router and switch, respectively?

Would access lists significantly affect the forwarding paths on either device?

Re: The best place to put the access lists

2001-02-07 Thread Craig Columbus

I agree that access lists should be placed at the access layer. However,
I'd argue that a firewall is a minimum component of security, not a best
solution for security. Those companies that depend solely on a firewall
for security could be in for a rude awakening. Additionally, if security
is mission critical, a PIX wouldn't be my recommendation. It's decent at
what it does, but lacks the ability to truly interrogate the network traffic.

RE: The best place to put the access lists

2001-02-07 Thread Piatnitchi Cristian

Hi all

1.What is the problem you are trying to solve?

Between my access router and the main servers will be installed a VPN
software. My acces router uses TACACS+ for authentication.

2 What is the purpose of the access lists?
I defined there some access lists for access our servers.

3. Is there one router and one switch, or are there multiple points
where the lists need to be maintained?

To simplify the problem I could say that there is one interesting switch
and one network access serve. My problems is if should I keep the ACL's on
the access server or to move them on the switch.

4 How much CPU power is available on the router and switch, respectively?
Would access lists significantly affect the forwarding paths on either
device?

the nas is C3640 and the switch could be a C2928XL

Thanks for your previous answers

2001-02-07 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

If you have the IP address 198.144.163.1 / 25, the scope you have assigned
is from 198.144.163.0 through 198.144.163.127. This is 1 network with 128
(126 usable) hosts.

You can now change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.192, which changes your
situation to two subnetworks with 64 (62 usable) hosts on each:

198.144.163.0 Network #1

198.144.163.1
thruHosts on network #1
198.144.163.62

RE: Cisco 1600 Router Down/Flapping ?

If the command "show frame-relay pvc" is identifying the PVC status as
"inactive", the PVC connection between your router and switch is working
properly. There is a problem between the switch and the destination router.

Ensure all configuration parameters on the remote router have been
configured correctly...

cable or the interface that is the problem.

Last

Hi,

do 'sh frame pvc' check what the status is.

Have fun

RE: Access-List Statement Clearification Request

2001-02-07 Thread Leigh Anne Chisholm

Question 1: As John pointed out in Question 2, access lists in the range of
1-99 are reserved for IP standard access control lists and are to be used in
conjunction with the "ip access-group" statement. Access lists in the range
of 1-99 cannot be used in conjunction with the "ipx access-group"
statement--even though your router might permit you to enter the command
without returning an error message during the configuration. When you issue
a "show running-config" statement, the command will not appear in the
configuration. Other than that, your interpretation of the statement is
correct.

Question 2: You can re-use access lists numbers on the same, or on various
interfaces. For example, you could see this in a running-config:

interface ethernet 0
  ip address 192.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
  ip access-group 1 in
  ip access-group 1 out

interface serial 0
  ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.0.0
  ip access-group 1 in
  ip access-group 1 out

The only other thing I'd point out, is that if you're going to specify IPX
access lists on an interface, don't forget to configure the IPX network
(command: "IPX network net_address") that is connected to the
interface--and of course, IPX routing (command: "IPX routing) must be
enabled before you can do this.

Lab Suggestions needed!

2001-02-07 Thread Chris Hagen

I've scraped by and acquired a few routers to start on a lab. Right now I'm
using it just for CCNP, but I hope to eventually expand this out into a CCIE
lab.

I've got 2 2503's with 16/8, a 3102 that I'm currently trying to find
upgrade boot proms so I can run the newer IOS, and I just acquired a 4000M
with only a NP-2T. I'm thinking one or two more routers for now, I'm not
sure if getting switches at this point would be as cost effective for my
pocketbook (I'm thinking about the new Cisco switch simulator training
package for BCMSN)
but I do want a couple of switches later.

What would you do if you could only put together a system a little at a
time?

I just wish my current position up in Madison, WI allowed me to do more with
networks beyond pinging and saying "yup, that's down, let me give you a
ticket number while I transfer this ticket up to..." until then, I'll just
have to aquire some more toys and keep playing with them at home only.

RE: Token Ring

2001-02-07 Thread Albert Ip

Pierre,

The media filter is not the MAU. The interface on a Cisco 25xx router is a
DB15. It is use to connect to a type 1 MAU. If you are using a RJ45 MAU
(most people are, it is a lot smaller), you will need a media filer. If
your router is a 2612, you will not need a media filter and just use a cat5
RJ45.

Token Ring and Ethernet does not operate on the same principles as Ethernet.
Ethernet uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access/ Collision Detection (CSMA/CD).
Token Ring uses token passing. Ethernet will send the packet out and detect
if there is a collision. Token Ring will not send out the information
unless it can insert the information in a empty frame (token). In an
Ethernet network, if the information is not for that host, the host will
discard the information. In a Token Ring network, if the information is not
for that host, the host will past the frame onto the next host. There is
never a collision in a Token Ring network. That is why you must have a MAU
in a Token Ring Network.

In the physical level, the roll/crossover cable will not work because the
interface does not operation at the same ohms. I presume you used a
DB15/RJ45 converter to connect to the router then use a roll cable to
connect to the NIC. You must use a media filter to connect to the router to
use the RJ45 connector on the NIC.

There is alot more difference between Ethernet and Token Ring. And believe
it or not, there is still alot of Token Ring out there. Also, you will have
to know all this to pass the CCIE exams.

Use a mask of 198.144.163.1/26 (255.255.255.192). Assuming ip subnet-zero
is enabled, your networks would be 198.144.163.0, with hosts from .1-.62,
and 198.144.163.64, with hosts .65-.126.

Pix Firewall Issue

2001-02-07 Thread exchange

Hi Gang,

I have a Pix Firewall 520 and wondered if this was a feature or a
configuration issue on my firwall. We have an entire class C address say
208.184.23.x to use for our network. We use the 192.168.1.x network for our
internal network. I am having problems pinging a machine's Internet ip
address say 208.184.23.11 which I noticed is statically mapped to it's
internal address say 192.168.1.10 on the pix.

For example, If I ping another box 208.184.23.12 and not statically mapped
to a internal ip address on the pix, I get a response.

Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Cisco

2001-02-07 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

One reason why someone might post such a question to a newsgroup is to help
troubleshoot DNS problems. If other users (like the majority of us, it
seems) can get to the website and he (the original poster) could not, that
might point to a problem with his ISP's DNS server being out of sync.

Or it could be a problem with reachability at the IP layer, but again, he
would have no way of knowing if it was just him who was having the problem,
or everybody. If the Cisco web server is down, then everyone would be
having the same problem and there's little he can do. If it's just him,
then he would know that it's time to get on the phone with his ISP.

Either way, such posts are valid, imo.

First, let's look at what you have, 198.144.163.1/25.
That gives you 126 usable addresses, 198.144.163.1-126.

Now, you want to further divide that into two subnets of 62 usable addresses each.
To do this, simply add another bit to the subnet mask. This will give you the
following:

 198.144.163.0/26 and 198.144.163.64/26

Your usable address range is 1-62 and 65-126. This is because you can't use the .0,
.63, .64, and .127 addresses.

There are a LOT of threads in the archives about subnetting. You should read
through those to get some really good insight into this process.

RE: 7000 router power issue ?

2001-02-07 Thread Daniel Cotts

You're OK.
I believe that the 7000 AC power supply is rated at 700 watts. volts times
amps equals power. So power divided by voltage equals amps. Assuming normal
electrical service in an US home 700/120 = 5.83 amps. The true current draw
would be determined by the number and type of cards in the router. I have
never taken a current reading of a working system. There is a large noisy
blower in the chassis. The whole is a useful space heater for cold winter
nights.

The standard US cord has a plug end that fits a regular 15 Amp receptacle. I
have run a 7000 at home.

Most electrical receptacles are rated at 15 amps. A normal electrical branch
circuit is rated at 20 amps - usable at 16 amps for continuous duty (over
three hours). So all should be well. The problem is that normal electrical
branch circuits have several (up to ten) receptacles on the circuit. The
total load cannot exceed 16 amps.

RE: Another 802.3 and Ethernet Question

2001-02-07 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

At 10:35 AM 2/7/01, Howard C. Berkowitz wrote:

That would be my assumption also. And, it is probably hard-coded to
recognize the EtherType for ARP also.

There were some cases of TCP/IP stacks using 802.3/802.2 and SNAP for IP
and ARP. They weren't very popular. But if you had some devices using them,
then you would have to configure the router to send ARPs that way. There is
also something called an HP Probe that accomplishes the same thing as ARP
in a non-standard way.

So there is an interface "arp {arpa | probe | snap}" command. I doubt that
it's used much. Encapsulation is much more of an issue for Novell.

This discussion has lost its steam. We might want to end it ;-)

Priscilla

 John

OK, Leigh Anne, you're just going to have to come out and tell us
 what you
are getting at.

But my guess is that if I did change
 it, the
   router could still handle it.

handle Ethernet_II but not necessarily 802.3.

the default frame type selected for IP, but didn't examine why IP

because different Ethernet encapsulations are not able to co-exist
within an
IPX network -- however different Ethernet encapsulations
 (Ethernet_II and
Ethernet 802.3) ARE able to co-exist within an IP network. As such,
what is
the importance of a default Ethernet encapsulation for IP?

That's what I've been challenging John to think about. Once
 he understands
where the default Ethernet encapsulation comes into play, he
 could answer
his question as to whether there "would there be a good reason
 to change to
 a

Actually, if you suspected your ISP's DNS to be invalid, you could use
someone else's. For example go to Network Solutions website and do a who-is
lookup on a known site, and then copy their two name servers to your own
setup and see if that would fix the problem.

You could even do a who-is lookup on cisco.com and see that they are using
ns1.cisco.com and ns2.cisco.com. Then do a nslookup, followed by a server
ns1.cisco.com, followed by a cisco.com that would give you

Name: cisco.com
Address : 198.133.219.25

Then exit nslookup and try to ping 198.133.219.25.

If that goes through okay, and your ping www.cisco.com doesn't - you know
you have a DNS problem somewhere.

Assuming that you are following a study plan, you should have an idea of the

There seem to be many changes going on in the various CCIE Tracks.
1. Routing and Switching - stable, some recent adjustments to the Lab test.
2. ISP Dial - going, going, gone by the end of the summer.
3. WAN - same as ISP Dial
(Elements of ISP Dial WAN may be in SP (Service Provider)

4. SNA-IP - also gone by the end of the summer
5. Design - looks like it's in limbo right now, will it ever come back?
6. prospective Security track - Qualification exam beta ended 3 months ago
and no word yet if it will go production or when/if there will be a Security

By my count, that's one going strong, three going away, one in limbo, and
perhaps two in the future.

Does anybody have any insight or info on the future of the program? Thanks.

RE: Cisco

2001-02-07 Thread Mask Of Zorro

If Cisco's web site were down, such that nobody could access it, you would
probably be better off going to CNN.COM to find out why rather than
GROUPSTUDY.COM.

Cisco's site being totally inaccessible would be a significant news event,
given the nature of the site and the efforts that Cisco has made to make the
service fault tolerant.

If you can't get to a web site of a major vendor, the problem is probably
yours (unless the vendor is Microsoft - but there again, CNN.COM...). Start
with ping, traceroute, nslookup, maybe a sniffer, examine your access-lists
or firewall rules for recent changes, etc.

One "is it down" and 2 dozen "works for me" messages still won't get you to
the site... When troubleshooting any problem, it is a good idea to try the
easy things first. It is not a good idea, however, to do the lazy things
first (or ever).

Why do you think it is down? What do your pings and traceroutes show?

How would the information that I can or cannot reach it be helpful to

You may also want to modify that command or eliminate it, if you want to

helpful in understanding bridging because I do not work with it at all. I
already had my CCNP and CCDP so this also helped and I would not recommend

Cisco's site being totally inaccessible would be a significant news event,
given the nature of the site and the efforts that Cisco has made to make
the
 service fault tolerant.

If you can't get to a web site of a major vendor, the problem is probably
yours (unless the vendor is Microsoft - but there again, CNN.COM...).
Start
with ping, traceroute, nslookup, maybe a sniffer, examine your
access-lists
or firewall rules for recent changes, etc.

One "is it down" and 2 dozen "works for me" messages still won't get you
to
the site... When troubleshooting any problem, it is a good idea to try the
easy things first. It is not a good idea, however, to do the lazy things
 first (or ever).

RE: Another 802.3 and Ethernet Question

2001-02-07 Thread Howard C. Berkowitz

At 10:35 AM 2/7/01, Howard C. Berkowitz wrote:

Priscilla

I have long been of the opinion that certain networking problems are
insoluble without doctoral-level intervention. In at least some of
them, the specific doctor required would be named Kevorkian.

  John

OK, Leigh Anne, you're just going to have to come out and tell us
  what you
are getting at. The suspense is killing me. ;-)

The only time I've ever configured an Ethernet encapsulation,
it has been
part of the ipx network command. As we know, Novell mucked things up and
supports four frame types, so being able to configure the frame type is
necessary for IPX. A unique feature of IPX is that you can configure
multiple networks on a single segment. Each of them must have
a different
encapsulation. In fact that is how you support networks with devices
configured for different encapsulations.

I don't even know that you can configure the encapsulation for IP on
Ethernet on a router. Can you? Or is that what you're getting at. IP
doesn't care.

With IP, 99% of the world uses Ethernet V2 (dest, src,
EtherType). I just
tried to change it on my PC and I couldn't, although I think I have seen
that capability on other PCs. But my guess is that if I did change
  it, the
router could still handle it.

Hi,

do 'sh frame pvc' check what the status is. Does it indicate it is
active,
Deleted, inactive.

Have fun

Congrats on the written! I bombed two weeks ago by one point, stupid
mistakes, and will be heading back for a retake next week.

Cisco used to have a program for the SEs of resellers named "Advanced SE
Training." They brought you under their wing, mentored, and provided access
to the actual lab where the testing will take place - for three days of
practice and critique. I don't know if the program is still available (by
the way, it is free), but you should be able to find the particulars by
doing a search of "AET" on CCO.

Good luck on your practical.

Subject: Passed CCIE Written
