Flash Upgrade on 1750

2001-03-05 Thread Radford Dion

Hi everyone.

I have just purchased a (cisco approved) Kingston 8MB mini-flash memory card
for my Cisco 1750, but it is not recognised as 8MB, only 4MB. It is only
seeing 2 banks of 2048K - has anyone else had similar problems. Of course
the @£$& shop I bought it off won't exchange memory that has been opened.

I have raised it with Kingston but in the meantime I would appreciate any
comments or experiences.

Thanks,

Dion

a strange problem in bgp and ospf environment

2001-03-05 Thread Zhang Hui

Hi,there:

I'm studying the section of in Halabi's book,
But unfortunately, I never get pass.

Please watch the topology attached in this mail, The 3640-1,2610,
2501-2 router run bgp protocol, but ospf run between 3640-1 and
3640-2.

The question is if I use clear ip bgp * command, the ospf route
192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 192.68.6.2 will appear in 3640-1's routing
table, but after BGP peer established, this route was replaced with
BGP route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.20.2.

I know the reason is the distance, but the fact is I have set the
 command in 3640-1!
the BGP route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 172.16.20.2's distance should
change from 20 to 200 and that ospf's route should stay in 3640-1's
routing table,it cann't be replaced by BGP's route again! SO,I cann't
understand completely.

Another question:
When I use command, then , I can
find the route 192.68.5.0 255.255.255.0 192.68.6.2 appeared,but the BGP
esatblished, the route then disappeared from the output of the .
What's happen ?

Thank in advance...

Re: CCO practice questions

As far as I know there is no practice questions on CCO. Actually you will
not be able to find practice questions for cisco test as in microsoft test.

Yes it makes the prep. period harder. The best way the prepare is to read as
much cisco press book as possible. There are few independent publisher with
good books. I can't remember thier name now. But still you can check with
www.certificationzone.com . they have perp tests based on their whitepapers
(you need subscription for full access). Use it to polish your knowledge.

check with OSPF configuration examples. for DV routing protocols RIP and
IGRP split horizan is enabled by default.

in point-to-point you will need static mapping for layer3. with p2m you
won't need if you have full-mesh.

ISDN S/T interfaces are used with ISDN BRI connections. T1/E1 links are used

Again, don't worry too much about the more obscure commands at first,
concentrate on understanding what happens, and then study one
additional command at a time. Before adding additional commands,
have a clear idea:

  what is your routing policy?
how do you want the added command to change the routing policy?

Halabi (1st ed -- I have 2nd ed on order) doesn't present things in
this manner, I agree. But in many respects, his Parts 3 and 4 should
be studied before Part 2. Learn policy before configuration.

So what are you trying to do with the backdoor command? I say this,
in part, because I've never found a real-world case where I needed
it. There are some examples in documentation, I will admit.
Looking at the Halabi examples, I think it's cleaner to use a
route-map to redistribute the IGP route into BGP, setting a
local-preference to make it preferred. Local preference is BGP
standard, while backdoor is not.

Without further information, I would think that the potential route
announced by BGP is being preferred, so the native OSPF route is
being suppressed.

Another "Router-on-a-stick" Post

2001-03-05 Thread Scott M. Trieste

Colleagues,

I've been browsing cisco.com for some info on inter-vlan routing with the
2610. Cisco says there is a way to build ethernet sub-interfaces for
trunking to a switch. But when I do a "int e0/0.100" and try to add an IP
address, it gives me an error message:
"Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10 or ISL vLAN."

There doesn't seem to be an "encapsulation [dot1q | isl] command on this
router, and mls obviously isn't supported.

I know that I could just give this interface multiple IP address and use a
"switchport access multi" command on the switch-- but that would be too
easy.

By the way, I am trying to do this with a 2924XL. Should this or shouldn't
this work?

Many thanks in advance,

Best Regards,

Scott M. Trieste

Re: Point-to-point vs. multi-point

2001-03-05 Thread Peter Park

One main difference is that separate subnet addressing must be used with
point to point. With point to multipoint you can use the same addressing
subnet...making it easier to migrate from NBMA or broadcast network type if
you are using OSPF.

Also,... with either one I don't think you need static map statements if you
are using OSPF as layer 3 routing protocol as the routing protocol will find
necessary info even in huband spoke topology.

Hi Scott,

Make sure that you have at least ip plus feature set, this is the general
configuration

ISL do1q is only supported on Fastethernet.

int fastethernet 0/1
no ip add

int fastethernet 0/1.1
encapsulation isl vlan 1
ip add 10.1.1.1 255.255.0.0

int fastethernet 0/1.2
encapsulation isl vlan 2
ip add 10.2.1.1 255.255.0.0

etc

on thr switch

int fax/x
switchport mode trunk

and thats pretty much it.

Kind regards

and be ready to see questions that test yr ability to read english and trick

anyway i passed.

now what extra do i know as a ccdp as compared to a ccnp?
ATM switch models and some terms from SNA.
nothing more.
and yes that after implementing a design i need to monitor the setup for

to all who want that ccdp tag ..read the "internetwork design guide" on the

Just passed the BCSN exam this morning... A thank you to this list for the
exam thoughts that were shared and the encouraging conversations that have
taken place.

BGP and OSPF were prominent on my exam. I read the CCNP exam certification
and preparation books from cisco press. I also had the luxury of banging
away on a few 2500's and a 3600. Know your config modes and the details of
ospf, eigrp and bgp.

The BCMSN is next

0 CIR is very common, if not the most common. If your connecting at a
single FR switch, then CIR is less of an issue since your really only
limited by the backplane of the switch (assuming non-blocking, or close to
it)

Telnet to a Router

2001-03-05 Thread Mark Rose

I am trying to telnet to a 2514 router from work. I have a Linksys BEFSR41
ethernet/dsl router on my incoming cable line. I have enabled port
forwarding for telnet (port 23) on this router. I have also set up vty on
the 2514. When I try to telnet to the wan interface of the Linksys forwarded
to the ethernet interface on the 2514 I get the message "Could not open a
connection to host: Connection failed". But if I remote access an NT server
inside my home net (on internal address space), from there I can telnet (on
the private address space) to the same ethernet interface and connect.

Since I can remote access my NT box, port forwarding on the Linksys router
is working. Also the 2514 should be set properly since I can telnet in from
within my lan. I must be overlooking something but I cannot figure it out.

I would appreciate any ideas or assistance.

TIA
Mark

RE: Frame Relay Charges

2001-03-05 Thread Nguyen_Trang

0 CIR, must be SPRINT.

How FR providers base their charges?
It depends on the provider and also if you are
talking about Internet access or private frame.

Some charges nothing for bursting over the CIR,
others charges based on how much and how long
you bursted over CIR. You need to ask the
provider for the detail of their charges.

0 CIR for 8-5, it depends on the type of data
you want to transmit. Example: You can't
afford frame dropping if you transmit video or
voice.

RE: Telnet to a Router

2001-03-05 Thread Albert Lu

Hi Mark,

Could it be that the router doesn't know where to send packets it is trying
to reply to? Try adding a static route to your gateway, so packets coming in
will know where to go (your gateway) once it arrives.

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 e0

That is one way of doing it. Please make suggestions if there is better way.
Of course you could use a routing protocol, but thats abit complicated when
all you want to do is telnet in.

Albert

AFAIK, ASN != PI address space. You can have your own ASN using
provider-assigned address space. At least that's what i understood

snmp monitoring PBX equipment that doesn't have a network connection

2001-03-05 Thread Hennen, David

Hi, I'm looking into monitoring of some "mission critical"
communications/network equipment.

Some of the equipment doesn't have a network interface, like a PBX or some
brands of UPS for instance. Focusing on PBX's, does anyone have experience
in methods to remotely monitor this type of equipment, using snmp or some
other method.

I recall hearing about using the dry contact inteface cards from APC to do
something similar. A question that comes to mind is whether, using APC's
triple expansion chassis, can I have an Environment Monitoring Card and an
SNMP card both running and configured so a break on the contacts on the Env.
card will trigger an snmp trap from the snmp card?

War stories about similar projects would be appreciated. If you want to
reply direct, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks if you can help

Re: snmp traffic

Basic answer- use NetFlow or with smaller routers (assuming you have
limited means, i.e. no RMON probes) IP Accounting & have your tool sguy
write a script to purge Sho IP Accounting. From this you should be able to
set up an Excel sheet (assuming you know your SNMP IP's). I had to do this
for a couple of days when one of our NetScouts went down :o(

Re: icmp weirdness

2001-03-05 Thread David Cooper

Hey, thanks for the help. In the frame relay network we have, hops are
transparent kind of. Only the CPE is visable. I had established that the
problem was occuring at the last router's ethernet interface. When I trace
the routes out it just gets to that router and times out. What
Erick B. pointed out was due to the fact that the primary address on e0 was
not the same network that the host in question was on. This turns out to be
the case. If I do an extended ping and source the packets from the secondary
address, the machine responds without haste. I've requested that the
administrator of the hosts over there build a static route to the foriegn
network address to help out although I don't suspect it will help alot from
an analytical point of view. :)

Thanks for all the help! - Sorry for the delay in replies.

RE: Frame Relay Charges

2001-03-05 Thread Tony van Ree

Hi,

To cut costs some people use Zero CIR. BUT, this might connect to a remote end that
bases it's utilisation on CIR. For example, a supplier might run a service from the
core to a frame switch at 2Meg with a CIR of 2Meg this will then cope with the entire
commited range to the serial port. Say you have 10 people with Zero CIR connected and
4 with 512K. The switch sees the ZERO with DE bits (all packets) what happens. On
the floor they go. Ring the supplier he might be symathetic to your problem. My
guess is he will not only recommend you up your CIR but also charge you for the
inconvenience.

Remember there are two ends to all of this plus a middle you have no control over.
The CIR gives you the little control you might like. The secret with CIR is to cover
yourself without buying more than you need.

Just some thoughts.

Let me rephrase. Questions are likely to be asked on why this can't
be done within a provider's AS (i.e., how does your routing policy
differ from theirs?) and/or using private AS numbers for
single-provider multihoming.

PI address space is not a requirement.

The only way to do this...ahem...is to do a detailed debug on the

Speaking as someone with substantial experience both in WAN switching
and SNA, the amount of information in the CID course is, at best,
enough to make you dangerous. Speaking as someone without much
experience in Windows networking, I didn't think it gave any useful
insights there.

>nothing more.
>and yes that after implementing a design i need to monitor the setup for
>performance..yes thats a question (pun intended !!)

I can only try to put CID in context. The most meaningful context
existed before the CCDP certification was introduced. At that time,
good instructors for CID assumed the slides were simply a jumping-off
point for lecture.

I've had conversation with other instructors who themselves were
experienced network designers, and our consensus was that only 50% or
so of class time was spent on the formal content of the course. The
remainder was devoted to case studies (NOT part of the exam but an
important part of the course experience), discussion of student
design issues, and relevant materials brought in by the instructor.

For example, I found the core/distribution/access model didn't really
make sense until specific products were mapped against it. A student
really wouldn't understand when to use which product until they
understood relative processing and forwarding power, which gets
intimately involved with switching paths. I'd often spend half a day
discussing this.

The more that Cisco has made certification an incentive, the less the
instructor can spend on "irrelevant" material without getting student
complaints that
"this class wasn't optimized to help me pass the exam." A sad
commentary for something that has as much art to it as good design
does.

Problem with Secondary IPs

I have two routers. I have secondary IPs setup on both routers. I can ping
both IPs on router A from router B, but I can only ping one on router B from
router A. I have done both regular and extended pings from both. These
routers are connected via a back to back serial cable.

Sample config follows:

Router A

ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 secondary

Router B

ip address 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 secondary

STS-10x reset to factory defaults

Anyone ever worked with one of these old cisco term servers?

I picked one up cheap. Unit powers on but nothing in hyperterm. I searched

i have verified works.

Any ideas on how to reset to factory defaults or if there are any wierd

Any ideas if this will work? Anyone tried it?

I just purchased a Cat 1201 and am trying desperately to connect via

shows no problems. I went to Cisco's website and they say to use a standard
console cable with a DB9. I have that and have swapped it out with another
as well. I have played with the hyperterm's settings and even went as far
as reset the box via the jumpers. All to no avail. What am I missing? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Switching types!!

2001-03-05 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

You should know about the different switching types a router can handle for
the CIT test and for the real world and possibly other exams too. Below is
a copy and paste from Chapter 12 of Top-Down Network Design. The chapter
covers optimizing your network design.

One of the major jobs of a router is to switch packets from incoming
interfaces to outgoing interfaces. Switching involves receiving a packet,
determining how to forward the packet based on the routing topology and QoS
and policy requirements, and switching the packet to the right outgoing
interface or interfaces. The speed at which a router can perform this task
is a major factor in determining network performance in a routed network.
Cisco supports many switching methods, with varying speeds and behaviors.

In general, you should use the fastest switching method available for an
interface type and protocol, (though there are some exceptions to this
guideline.) Using a speedy switching mode is especially important on
backbone and core enterprise routers. Depending on the version of IOS
software you are running, the fastest mode might need to be configured. (It
is not always the default.)

Below are some of the details on the switching types.

Process switching is the slowest of the switching methods. With process
switching, when a packet arrives at an interface, the system processor is
interrupted for the time it takes to copy the packet from the interface
buffer to system memory. The processor looks up the Layer-3 destination
address for the packet in the routing table to determine the exit
interface. The packet is rewritten with the correct header for that
interface and copied to the interface. At this time, an entry is also
placed in the fast-switching cache so that subsequent packets for the
destination address can use the same header. The first packet to a
destination is always process switched.

Fast switching allows higher throughput by switching a packet using an
entry in the fast-switching cache that was created when a previous packet
to the same destination was processed. With fast switching, a packet is
handled immediately, without scheduling an interrupt of the system processor.

Autonomous switching is available on Cisco 7000-series routers and uses an
autonomous-switching cache located on interface processors. Autonomous
switching provides faster packet switching by allowing the ciscoBus
controller to switch packets independently, without having to interrupt the
system processor.

Silicon switching is similar to autonomous switching, but speeds up
autonomous switching through the use of a silicon-switching cache located
on the Silicon Switch Processor (SSP) on some Cisco 7000-series routers.

Optimum switching is similar to fast switching, but is faster, due to an
enhanced caching algorithm, and the optimized structure of the
optimum-switching cache. Optimum switching is only available on routers
equipped with a Route/Switch Processor (RSP).

Distributed switching is supported on routers that include Versatile
Interface Processor (VIP) cards or other interface cards that can receive
route information from the master RSP to make their own autonomous,
multilayer switching decisions. Distributed switching supports very fast
throughput because the switching process occurs on the interface card.

NetFlow switching is a relatively new switching mode that is optimized for
environments where services must be applied to packets to implement
security, QoS features, and traffic accounting. An example of such an
environment is the boundary between an enterprise network and the Internet.
NetFlow switching identifies traffic flows between hosts, and then quickly
switches packets in these flows at the same time that it applies services.
NetFlow switching also lets a network manager collect data on network usage
to enable capacity planning and bill users based on network and application
resource utilization. The data can be collected without slowing down the
switching process.
To maximize network scalability, a good design practice is to use NetFlow
switching on the periphery of a network to enable features such as traffic
accounting, QoS functionality, and security, and to use an even faster
switching mode in the core of the network. At the core of the network, the
switching mode should forward packets based on easily-accessible
information in the packet, and generally should not spend time applying
services.

Hope this helps.

Re: Backup for CAT 3500 switches

2001-03-05 Thread Bob Timmons

Hmm.. try this:

http://bobtimmons.home.mindspring.com/bin/wrnet.zip

I don't remember where I found it, but it's freeware. Here's part of the
TXT file that comes with it:

"WrNet is a Windows command line utility that will instruct a
Cisco router to save its running-config to a TFTP server
using SNMP.

WrNet can be combined with the Windows NT Scheduler service to
automate the backups of Cisco router configurations."

Let us know if this works for you.

VOIP over FR..how can get the tone from opposite PABX..?

2001-03-05 Thread Grad Alfons Kanon

I have scenario to install:

Headquarter (HQ) connect to Branch A (A) and B (B) using Frame Relay
HQ using E&M conect to PABX HQ and Branch A using E&M but Branch B using
FXO.

We make dial plane like this:

x-111-yyy --> to HQ from the rest
x-222-yyy --> to A from the rest
x-333-yyy --> to B from the rest

x = number that user must dial to get the tone from Voip configured in PABX

yyy = local extension number.

The problem is, when we dial from HQ to Branch A/B, we can only reach the
user at the opposite site if we dial x-222-yyy / x-333-yyy all at once. We
can not press x-222 to get the tone from PABX A and then extension number.

How can we configure the router to enable user get the tone from opposite
PABX after dial 111 or 222 or 333.?

CONFIG in HQ

dial-peer voice 1 pots
destination-pattern 111
port 1/0/0
!
dial-peer voice 222 voip
destination-pattern 222...
session target ipv4:192.168.100.1
!
dial-peer voice 333 voip
destination-pattern 333...
ip precedence 5
session target ipv4:192.168.100.5

voice-port 1/0/0
timing percentbreak 50
operation 4-wire
type 5
signal immediate

I have just done the same thing few weeks ago.
Make sure that you have the cables from PBX to E&M interfaces made by the
Cisco specification. You can get the wiring details from the 1700 Series
Hardware installation guide or the web.

Cheers.

RE: FW: CCO practice questions

2001-03-05 Thread Faxon, James

Just for future reference the Cisco study questions can be found at

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/front.x/wwtraining/colt/ColtLogin.pl

You do need a CCO login and there are alot of different practice tests.
