RE: Ipx routing [7:24091]
well, when in doubt, check. I was going to say that ethernet and token ring ports all have fixed macs these days, but before making a fool of myself I thought I'd check. under the interface configuration mode, one can use the "mac-address" command to enter whatever mac you want. e.g. mac-address EE55EE ( enter ) show ipx interface will reveal the new manually assigned macs. my grandfather used to tell me stories about stuff like this. ;-> I'm gonna have to remember this the next time I visit the Lab. It always bothered me that I was prepared for the general ipx network x.x.x command, but that would still leave me if problems if I wanted to IPX ping an ethernet interface. one more trick to stuff into the bag. The documentation makes it sound like the new 2.2.2 address will be used for all packets sourced by the router, but this isn't so. What the documentation should say (and maybe it does, but maybe not too clearly) is that serial ports don't have a MAC address. By default they will source IPX packets using a Node ID that is from the first LAN interface. If you don't like that, then you can tell the router to use something else (by adding the parameter to ipx routing). I don't have a WAN sniffer, but I can verify that what you are seeing on Ethernet happens on my routers also. Yes !! Keep your spirits up, everyone. You may not have the employers lining up outside your door anymore. You may have to do more company research, interview preparation, etc. You may have to relocate. You may not get those 1999 salaries. But the jobs are there. Go out to Monster or Dice or whatever job search engine and do a search on Cisco, CCNP, or CCIE (31 hits for Silicon Valley today for CCIEon www.dice.com). Yes there are still jobs out there. Use human networking, word of mouth. Getting a job in a downturn market is very possible but it does take work. And a big thanks to Chuck for his every-present optimism and sense of humor. I remember seeing another bug where if you configure eigrp and then undo eigrp, it will reload the router... cool huh?? or how about this one -- "A 3660 series router running IOS version 12.2(3) may reload unexpectedly with a software forced reload when running EIGRP.There is no known work around." The funny stuff about TAC to me is the pre-written answers given to you, such as the pleasure to work with you, etc.. etc... etc... I remember opening a ticket some time ago where I was trying to reference some issue to an older TAC ticket, saying that this is still happening and the last time, you guys gave me no real solution. Gave the guy the old TAC number. Well, I get a reply back from TAC and the answer was the exact same answer as the first original TAC ticket, with the same spelling and grammatical errors as the first one. The only thing different about this answer was the name of the TAC engineer at the bottom. Generally for me the TAC guys are cool to deal with, I guess when it comes to bugs, they are just the messengers and not the developers. Re: is it really bad market for ccie ? [7:24297]
Here's my thoughts * Yes, I know several CCIE's who are having trouble finding work. And yes, I know one guy who has 2 CCIE's (R/S and ISPDial) who is having trouble finding work. For those of you who think it might be due to lack of experience, the guys I am talking about have at least 5 years of experience, and the dual-guy has more than 10, including more than 5 at Cisco as an SE. * My understanding is that the one-day lab is significantly harder than the older 2-day lab. But of course, this might be compensated for by the fact that the wait list will be shorter (eventually). * I don't know that Cisco has too many CCIE tracks. Right now there are 3 active tracks. This is like the old days of the program, when they also used to have 3 (R/S, ISP-Dial, WAN) [Note, Ok, in the really old days, I know there used to be only the R/S]. But I remember at one point last year or so, there were actually 5 active tracks (R/S, ISP-Dial, WAN, Design, SNA/IP). Now that really was too many tracks. * You're right, why bother (esp. with the R/S)? Sorry guys, I know this sounds harsh, and I know that I'm going to get flamed for this, but if I had to do it all over again, I don't know that I would try to get the R/S. Now by that, let me be clear. There is nothing wrong with learning the R/S material. That is always good. Everybody should learn the material that the R/S guy knows. But as far as doing actual test prep - getting my typing and configuration speed up so that I can set up BGP and OSPF in 10 minutes, actually paying for the test and travelling to the test site, I don't know that I would put myself through that again unless it was worth it. Let's face it. This isn't 1998-1999 anymore. Who knows when, or even if, things will get better? Particularly when there is probably a much more valuable cert program out there. Which is why I am moving on to ... * Juniper. I don't think the same market forces hold for Juniper, at least not to the same degree. The Juniper market is much less saturated than the Cisco market. Consider this - there are about 6650 CCIE's out there, of which probably about 6400 are R/S'ers. Right now there are 20 JNCIE's. So despite the fact that the demand for Juniper skills is smaller, I have a very difficult time believing it is 320 times smaller. You can check out my old post (7:3485, posted 10/1/01, on Re:Is the CCIE really worth it), where I discuss this subject at length. Well, good luck on getting your service straightened out. Frame and ATM internetworking is relatively new so lots of tweaks have to be done. including on the provider end. We are trying to tweak some parameters now for some of our customers running the same type of service. But as far as your service, it looks like yours is working ok and you are just trying to get the best paremeters configured on the routers. RE: Jeff Doyle Vol I or II? [7:24269]
or neither. seriously. Doyle has his place in the study cycle. on the other hand, I found Terry Slattery's book to be outstanding, with some far more interesting examples. some of the exercises are definitely worth the extra study. I've written before about the Parkhurst BGP book, which I think on the whole offers far better CCIE Lab preparation material than does Halabi ( although maybe not as good in the theory department ) what it comes down to is where you are in your studies and your background. Somebody just starting in networking is probably going to gain far more from reading Lammle than Berkowitz. On the other hand, someone at the point of their studies or career where they understand Berkowitz might find Lammle far less worthwhile. > Can you give me the url for this WUG product. > - WhatsUp Gold. www.ipswitch.com A very decent product for the price. Simple, yet effective, ICMP polling plus some SNMP Get additions. Mapping is good. Graphing available. The notification options; from pop-ups to email to pager to noise, are very useful. One "nifty" is the ability to poll various NT services. There are various customization tools. COM interfaces are there, as well. If you think about your basic needs for enterprise management, this is certainly worth a look. Small fraction of the cost of some vendor's stuff. Doesn't do it all, but there's always telnet, eh? Best, G. V.P. Hello, When configuring cef for per packet for dual T-1 links to one isp, what do the commands, no ip route-cache cef actually do? Also, when I configure this command, it overwrites the no ip route-cache command on that particular interface so I have to first type the no ip route-cache cef command and then only the no ip route-cache command? I'm pretty sure that Talbot is correct about that one. When I received my score report, it was in percentage units (1-100) and not a weighted score. The exam that I took was before the recent change, but I assume that it's still the same. Re: Those who have passed IE-written, please advise [7:24289]
Without hesitation I'd suggest doing the CCDA/DP tests unless you're really in a hurry to get the CCIE written out of the way. They really help fill in some knowledge gaps. The CCNA/NP track gives you a grasp of the technologies but it doesn't really provide the best design skills. The design track helps you to understand how everything fits together and helps you to spot the implications of your configuration choices. My $.02, John >>> "Clark Jason" 10/26/01 2:40:05 PM >>> First of All, Congrats and well-wishes to all those who have passed the CCIE-written. I have a question for youI will be taking the CIT on Tuesday, and with God's grace, and my continued study, I have faith I will pass. CCNP tests will be a thing of the past at that point, but then WHAT? Lots of people that I have run into say that the CCDA/DP route is the next best thing to taking the IE-written. I have a corporations training budget behind me, so it wouldn't be a problem for me to get some hands-on exp with routers training-wise(I do have some already), as well as getting all of the study materials that I need to get the IE-written out of the way, as well as the lab. follow UP: /entering the BGP command "neighbor a.b.c.d [7:24265]
I reported my observations to Cisco. They contacted me, had me do a song and dance and provide them with some detailed information. Perhaps we might infer from this just about where the LAB IOS image might be? ( Given that Cisco claims that anything in their Lab scenarios will work on a given IOS image. The other inference is that you won't see a requirement for a BGP default-originate ;-> ) the interesting thing is that the bug appears all the way through 12.1.9 I'm guessing that other than in CCIE study preparation, BGP on the 25xx platform does not happen all that much ;-> Cisco's response to my bug report: -Original Message- From: CISCO Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2001 8:54 PM To: ME Subject: Case C010503 - Report a Bug BGP/entering the BGP command "neighbor a.b.c.d default-originate" causes router to reload. every time Hi Chuck, Thank you for all the information provided, indeed we come across with a software bug which fits our situation. Bug id: CSCdp26660 Description: Retitled 991028 by aretana If you configure a bgp neighbor so that you send him a default router using the "default-originate" option it will reload the router. The bug was fixed in 12.1.10(1) and above. I did publish 12.1.11 with the same feature set as the existing image. I will now close this ticket as the bug matches exactly our problem and I did publish the new image which is going to work with your existing Ram and Flash Memory. However if you still need assistance please ring Cisco and ask them to have this case reopen and it will be re-assigned to an available engineer. VoX Book Recommendation [7:24263]
I recently purchased and have been reading through Integrating Voice and Data Networks by Scott Keagy, available from CiscoPress. I must say that this is a truly excellent book and I wish I'd had this months ago. It would have saved me from learning a lot of lessons the hard way. It does a great job of explaining various voice technologies and WAN design considerations. It has some wonderful sections of codecs and how to choose the right one for your application. Especially helpful to me is the section on frame relay which has a great explanation of FRTS. I'm only about a third of the way through the book and I've learned stuff already that we immediately applied to our network to improve our VoIP quality. If you're in the market for a good book on Voice-over-whatever, you must buy this book. Geeze- Open View is probably the most widely used. Depending on your company size, I think you should find it more reasonable than CiscoWorks. We used NetView @ my old employer (IBM's version of Open View). All these applications come with demo periods. I think Open View allows up to 50 object for more than 30 days, @ no charge. Heidi, I have not tried a life as a consultant yet, mostly because I'd have to pay for my own health insurance, etc. I know that the money in many situations would be better, but what is your experience since you've been in both camps? Anyway, I have never been bored as an admin, manager nor as a programmer - but I guess it depends on the place you're working - how many users/departments/locations and of course how big the budget is. For you sniffer buffs out thereif you look at a sniffer trace and compare isl to 802.1q you will see that with isl, the vlan tag info will come first before the source and destination...in 802.1q you will see the source and dest. address first then the vlan tagging info. Re: quick response (help) please [7:24238]
Hello, John. If you break the address and the subnet mask down into binary, it may make a little more sense. The 0-255's make it easier for us humans to understand. The equipment only sees a long string of 0's and 1's. That 255 only makes a difference when using a classful mask. Here is how it breaks down: 00011000..0101. (Address) ..1000. (Mask) I included the decimal points to aid readability. If you follow the bits, you'll see the broadcast address for this segment is 24.15.127.255. That is equal to all the host bits being set to 1's (all 11 of them). The subnet address for this segment is 24.15.120.0. The 0 address you are concerned about is 24.15.120.0. The 255 address is 24.15.127.255. This subnet has 2048 total addresses, 2046 valid addresses. When you work with CIDR (Classless Inter Domain Routing), this makes much more sense. It seems everyone starts learning TCP/IP addressing with classful addresses, which adds to the confusion. Classful works for most networks but sometimes can hurt the learning process later on. The key to remember here: BINARY. Don't forget: BINARY Did I mention BINARY?? I harp on that because I have tried teaching many engineers how to subnet only for them to keep asking the same question you did. Hope this helps. Ken >>> "John Green" 10/26/01 08:22AM >>> the IP address alloted by the dhcp server to my home computer (via cable ie cable modem connection) is IP address 24.15.125.255 subnet mask 255.255.248.0 def gw 24.15.125.1 ok look ar the last quad it is 255 !!! i can't believe this. do you how this is possible ? 0 and 255 are rserved for network and broadcast addresses. please email me asap... __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: quick response (help) please [7:24238]
I could be wrong here, but I would imagine the reason this works is that you have a supernet there, with the mask of 255.255.248.0, so the hosts address is not all-ones, so is not treated as a broadcast address. The host address includes 3 binary digits from the third octet (125), so it works out to be 101 . I guess that zero saves it from being a broadacst address. Is this right, or did the Cable ISP just screw up? Re: quick response (help) please [7:24238]
Look at the subnet though. 255.255.248.0. That would fit for a network of 24.15.112.0 with an IP range of 24.15.120.1 through 24.15.127.254 (usable). The broadcast would be 24.15.127.255. 24.15.125.255 is just somewhere in the middle of the usable IPs. If the subnet had been 255.255.255.0 then yes you would be correct. He is right. You can pass DNS and WINS information, but subnet mask and stuff won't be in there. I don't believe there is even a field in the IPCP packet for that. John, The message you're seeing might require you to remove the LDN from the 'isdn spid' statement on each router. I know this is how you had it configured on one router already, but try it on both. Eg. isdn spid1 6025551313 However, ensure that you configure only 'isdn spid1' on each router. Don't configure 'isdn spid2' on either. The deubg outputs show :- (a) For Point-to-Multipoint network type (using the interface subcommand ip ospf network point-to-multipoint) - Hello packets were exchanged using multicast during the Init-state - OSP packets were sent using unicast during the ExStart, Exchange and Loading states - after Full state, hello packets were sent using multicast (b) For point-to-multipoint non-broadcast network type (using the interface subcommand ip ospf network point-to-multipoint non-broadcast) - Hello packets as well as other OSPF packets used unicast duirng Init, ExStart, Echange and Loading states. (c) Point-to-point network - Hello packets as well as other OSPF packets used multicast during Init, ExStart, Exchange and Loading states. The debug outputs too long to post here but I can e-mail separately to anyone who wants to look at them. Re: what is feature license? [7:24220]
Hi No it would not be present in the software. If you want to those features you will need to buy the image that supports. DLSw+ and MAC addresses (Where do they terminate?) [7:24229]
Hi all, I've been studying DLSw and here's what I've gathered so far... 1. DLSw terminates all RIFs at the local router 2. DLSw terminates the LLC2 connection at the local router My question concerns the MAC address: Will a receiving station see the local router's address or the MAC address of the sender? I've always assumed that it would see the local router's MAC address, but I want to be sure. It's not specifically addressed in the literature. Thanks!
