Re: IE Written [7:41320]

2002-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Timothy Ouellette)

Sorry if I seem negative but what does it matter what "we" think?

If this is something you want, why not go get it?

If you think that it'll put you in a more marketable position (i'm
sure it will, even in Dallas) than why not do it. Not to mention,
it's all about the knowledge man! (especially now that the industry
pay has gone to the birds)

Re: What is better? MLPP or load balancing with IO [7:41249]

2002-04-13 Thread Michael Williams

He could be referring to EIGRP load balancing (if using EIGRP).

I have used both methods to balance traffic over multiple T1s. If you *are*
using EIGRP, then let it handle the balancing as then there is no extra
overhead associated with MLPPP. If your routing protocol doesn't support
equal cost load balancing, then I would use the MLPPP method.

OT Question [7:41326]

2002-04-13 Thread Richard Tufaro

Hey guys/gals,

My company is going to be considering buying a Proxy server. Can I get
some feedback on the types of Proxy servers out there that this group is
using and how your experience's with them have been? Only real considerations:

1. Fast as hell (of course)
2. Integration with NT/2000 AD
3. Easy Web or Console setup and continued maintenance
4. Redundancy options
5. Awesome reporting

Perks would be if it intergrates well with PIX.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Set Channel_id? [7:41303]

Hi Jeffrey,

AFAIK, each (Fast)EtherChannel is automatically assigned a unique
EtherChannel ID. I don´t think there is a way to manually set it.
If you do a ´show spantree´, you can see the Channel_id assigned to the
respective channel.
Hope this helps.

RE: traffic analyzer [7:41327]

2002-04-13 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler

While we're off-topic (somewhat) -

What are people doing for non-Ethernet traffic analysis?
I'm specifically interested in T1 and V.35 interfaces

I've used Sniffers for this in the past with quite a bit of success however
given the current state of the economy, etc. my current client is interested
in seeing what their options are in this area.

Obvously in the Ethernet Market there's Ethereal, Etherpeek, Network
Instruments, etc. My preference would be to have the same interface
(assuming it would be GUI...) regardless of the network technology being
analyzed.

I've been spoiled by the "distributed sniffer" product for remote sniffing
and am looking for similar functionality.

Thanks for the input.

This is true also. If you attempt to telnet into the router, you will
receive a

I would (and do) use the access list if I have an enable password already

That works for networks divided on octet boundaries, but what about when you
want to capture a /22 or a /23? I actually needed the practice with dec->hex

Haaa.Can I re-write the job post...Pllaasss

Client is seeking a highly seasoned CCIE with 5+ years of ISP/Large
Enterprise experience who has done years of project management and can tie a
neck-tie. Candidate must be currently un-employed, have no plans of
becoming employed in the next year, and must be willing to work for %50 of
his market worth. Candidate should enjoy getting jerked around at a moments
notice and despise the thought of reward for work well done.

Heck yeah...Sign me up (And maybe afterwards, you can take turns

No offense Strobel, but I know of no Cisco employee that 1) thinks he or
she isn't more than one quarter of bad stock reporting away from losing
their job 2) thinks Cisco is the panacea of employers (the millionaire
stock guys/ gals have left and those left are eating sour grapes because
they couldn't vested in time) 3) most positions within Cisco (namely the
CCIE billets) don't generally pay the upper end of scale, unless you're
lucky enough to be on a sales account with say someone the size of Time
Warner/ AOL.

Just my experience- having worked with current and former Cisco
employees...

Please don't get me wrong, logically it would seem Cisco Corporate is
the way to go...

Of course, ccbootcamp, Boson, cerificationzone these are all just tools.
The

But, I am curious. Why do you want to become a CCIE?

I want to become a CCIE with the hope and anticipation of a better job,
a
better income, and a better life.
You already have a better life. Your signature says you work for Cisco,

you
are constantly on this list. This means you are getting paid for surfing

I don't believe any other employer would give you so much leway even if

Forget CCIE and hold on to your good Cisco Systems employer, and shoot

RE: 4006 Power Supplies [7:41257]

2002-04-13 Thread David C Prall

The one problem with running it on one power supply is that it can only
power the first four blades. When booted it will only bring up the
supervisor as well under the latest code releases. Older code will allow it
to bring up the first four blades and leave the last two in a disabled
state, if so equipped.

RE: IE Written [7:41321]

2002-04-13 Thread George Bethel

I live in the metroplex. There is work to be had in Dallas. The
criteria for getting it is more difficult. By all means go for
the CCIE. It takes 6-18 months for the sharp people and if it takes
longer don't let it get you down. One of the best engineers I know
took 7 attempts to pass the lab and the worst CCIE I know passed the
first time. However, don't think that being a CCIE is the end of your
troubles. CCIE will lend a little credibility and open some doors,
it is still the experience that counts.

I hope no one jumps on me about this but I am in Dallas and as most of you
know the market here is horrible. And that is an understatement. I am
wanting to go for my IE written in about 3 months but I only have a year of
experience. I know that is not enough by Cisco standards but it may be my
only option right now for another job. What do ya'll(had to throw that in)
think my chances are?

Summarizatino at least! [7:41358]

2002-04-13 Thread David j

5 months ago I was trying to implementent manual summarization on our
hub-and-spoke eigrp network, but we had lots of troubles (inestability and
convergence troubles). I suppose that my posts explaining the problem are
still in the archives so I'm not going to repeat them here.
I only want to say that we had inestability because we used an expect script
for changing the configuration on all hub routers (think about this, we
added the ip summary-addres eigrp 1 172.25.0.0 to 100 interfaces at the same
time, I think this was too much for eigrp)
Well, only two advices if someone is going to implement manual summarization
on a hub-and-spoke eigrp network:
1.- You should do it step-by-step (no scripts) first change the
configuration of one interface and then check that all is working fine.
2.- You should use the command eigrp stub connected in spoke routers, it's
very important if you don't want to see a lot of SIAs wandering around your
network.
Regards, David.

Re: Now What???????? [7:40988]

2002-04-13 Thread Gaz

I wouldn't see anything wrong with listing on your CV the fact that you have
passed the CCIE written exam and are working towards taking the lab.
I've chuckled before at people putting CCIE written in their signature
blocks, but I think this is very different. It at least shows the employer
that there has been an intent to progress towards CCIE rather than stopping
at existing quals.

I can see your point, and I think it should be listed clearly stating that
it is just the written.
My 2 penneth anyway.

RE: CCIE lab test schedule [7:41300]

2002-04-13 Thread Wes Stevens

There are lots of seats available for the rest of this month and a few in
early may in rtp. Usually as the one month deadline comes up people who are
not quite ready start to cancel. So if you are going to be ready before oct,
just plan to take the test and keep watching. About a month before you want
to take the lab dates should free up.

RE: traffic analyzer [7:41327]

2002-04-13 Thread Patrick Ramsey

If you want to keep the same interface, I think sniffer pro has the market...

I mean...for serial sniffing, you could always go with any one of the
handheld devices that are out...but sniffer pro is the only one that I know
of that can do ATM/T1/E/FE/GE/FDDI/TR/etc all in the same gui.

-Patrick

>>> "R. Benjamin Kessler"  04/12/02 12:08PM >>>

Good answer. Sorry Sean. I wasn't trying to seem short in my first
response, I was just trying to make clear Dialer profiles (Dialer
Interfaces) versus Rotary groups as opposed to dialer pools versus rotary
groups.

Good point. Had never thought of that. Most of our sites are either /16 or
/24, however, we have alot of smaller branch sites that are /26. I guess in
those cases tho, I would always setup the sniffer to sniff the traffic at
the routers ethernet interface, in which was using a /24 mask didn't cause a
problem because it captured all of the data from the /26 that I was
interested in anyway =)

Re: Frame-Relay Problem [7:41250]

2002-04-13 Thread Michael Williams

Sean brings up a good point to check the maximum clock rate of your module.
I've seen more than 1 person try to use the A/S module for 1.544Mbps
However, the A/S module that he refers to supports a max of 115.2Kbps in
async mode and when put into sync mode supports a max of 128Kbps. This
module you speak of (NM-4T) should support up to 8Mbps on a single interface
or up to 2Mbps on all 4 interfaces at the same time. (just to be sure I
checked Cisco's site on that module and here's what I found:

"The 4-port synchronous (sync) serial network module (NM-4T) has four DB-60
ports and provides a data rate of 8 Mbps on port 0, 4 Mbps each on port 0
and port 2, or 2 Mbps on all four ports simultaneously. The NM-4T network
module supports only sync mode. "

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/107/hw_4t.html

So you clockrate shouldn't be a problem at 64Kbps. It seems that most
of any suggestions I could make have been covered here (framing, frame-relay
switching, etc). I guess I would just start at layer 1 and work up from
there. i.e. make sure all cables, connectors and even serial interfaces on
the routers are good, then proceed up to layer 2 with debugs, etc

HTH,
Mike W.

Re: CCIE Written Reading.. [7:41017]

2002-04-13 Thread Kevin Cullimore

A few concerns:

I'm not sure that "leeway" to "surf" & "chat" constitutes a better life/job.
That could just as easily be a sign that a position or a company is in in
trouble due to lack of business.

More realistically, not being allowed to "surf" newsgroups on company time
means that you are denied access to solutions that are not documented
anywhere else.

This has several consequences:

1. You must use their time to duplicate extant solutions.

2. You possibly improve your skills by independently deriving the solution.

This does not scale well for your employer: they have to wait for you to
come up with answers that others can extract via an online search, and you
become more expensive to retain over time (rendering your case for someone
in the opposite or nearly opposite situation to be in possession of "a
better life" all the weaker).

The "chat" case is a little more ambiguous.

While posting to newsgroups allows you to gain valuable practice (again, a
case where you potentially further your own marketability), it does
represent instances where you are sharing knowledge outside your employer's
talent pool and are not working on revenue generating matters (note: I'm
explicitly ignoring any social networking opportunities that might emerge as
a result of such interaction).

Other employers vary widely concerning these issues.

I'm not sure encouraging a technically-oriented Cisco employee to forego
pursuit of a CCIE certification holds up as valid (impartial) advice.

As far as income/job/life goes, I'm not sure that any software/hardware
provider is safe from having their business eroded by their own increasing
efficiency or the efforts by competitors to leapfrog their current set of
capabilities. The entire world is banding together to reduce IT salaries,
and the success of those efforts would reduce both the overall quality and
achievable salaries of the remaining jobs (caveat: some jobs would certainly
remain interesting or possibly grow more appealing, but the number of
positions available for those roles would probably shrink).

Finally, I'm not sure that a company that routinely trims 5% during
unimaginably good times is the right one to passively cling on to as
suggested in your "Forget CCIE and hold on to your good Cisco Systems
employer" suggestion.

In the proxy/cache space, the products from Network Appliance are considered
by many, including myself, to be the best of breed. It meets all of your
listed requirements and is consistently rated high in 3rd party reviews. You
can check out their product line at http://www.netapp.com

As far as integrating with the PIX, no proxy will integrate directly with
the PIX. This PIX has no built in ability to work with a proxy, so it will
have no knowledge of the proxies existence.

Hey guys/gals,

My company is going to be considering buying a Proxy server. Can I get
some feedback on the types of Proxy servers out there that this group is
using and how your experience's with them have been? Only real
considerations:

1. Fast as hell (of course)
2. Integration with NT/2000 AD
3. Easy Web or Console setup and continued maintenance
4. Redundancy options
5. Awesome reporting

Perks would be if it intergrates well with PIX.

RE: traffic analyzer [7:41267]

2002-04-13 Thread Kent Hundley

If all that's needed is general traffic trend patterns, things like how much
traffic, what stations are talking to what other stations, protocols in use,
etc, then you can do no better than NTOP: http://www.ntop.org

It has a small footprint, fairly low overhead, gives you RMON type stats
through a nice web gui and much more. Plus it's open source. The main
disadvantage is a lack of comprehensive documentation, but there are mailing
lists for help, plus you get the source code. I'm using it right now for
network trending info and the amount of detail it provides is outstanding.
It's much better than a sniffer for macro level network information.

HTH,
Kent

Agreed. Ethereal beats Sniffer Pro, Etherpeek, or any other sniffer I've
used hands down. Best of all, it's free.

Hi Dear Friends,

I have 1 branch office connected to main office by frame relay. I
noticed a lot of traffic across this link and would like to find out
what they are. The problem is I don't have access to the branch office,
therefore, everything has to be done in main office. I tried sniffer
pro, etherpeek and anasil but they only allow me to specify a particular
source IP, not the whole branch office subnet. Is there any other
software I can use?

Thanks.

Re: Cisco vs. Juniper of LSP setup [7:41268]

2002-04-13 Thread nrf

Uh, what are you talking about? Your question seems to be garbled. First
of all, there are several ways to establish LSP's in IOS. If you want to
set up LSP's using normal IGP, then just use LDP/TDP. JunOS also allows you
to use LDP, or you can create LSP's manually (something that IOS cannot do).

If you want to use MPLS-TE on IOS and you don't want to use opaque LSA's,
then how about using ISIS extensions?

I passed all 4 too. In my opinion the CSIDS was really the hardest exam.
Many detail questions about single Signatures.
I did see 2 different CSIDS exams, maybe one is easier.

I seem to remember having a bit of a mare with similar. If you have no luck,
is using one of the async ports an option?

This is a working config from a 2509 using first async port:

line 1
 autoselect ppp
 modem Dialin
 modem autoconfigure discovery
 transport input all
 stopbits 1
 speed 115200
 flowcontrol hardware

Re: Cisco vs. Juniper of LSP setup [7:41268]

2002-04-13 Thread LU

hmm, okay here is what I was talking about, you can not set up a LSP in IOS
without enabling opaque or ISIS extensions. I did not make myself clear
that I was talking about TE, so LDP should not be in the picture, as you can
not reserve bandwidth with it, not till we have CR-LDP. Junos allows you
using no-cspf to ignore the TE-database and set up LSP just based on normal
IGP topology.
I just want to make sure that I did not miss some IOS commands here.

Thanks
LU

Another question about IOS LSP, what command do I use to advertise the LSP

How do you get the PIX to automatically log out the console if someone

Well then the answer to your question is still yes, you can do it. I see
that somebody on the Juniper list answered it, but I will answer it here
too. You can set up explicit paths in your TE tunnels (tunnel mpls
traffic-engineering path-option 1 explicit ...), and then set up a
explicit-path. By doing so, you are creating the TE tunnels manually, so
you do not need a TED, therefore you do not need OSPF or ISIS (or any
routing protocol, for that matter)

Re: Cisco vs. Juniper of LSP setup [7:41268]

2002-04-13 Thread LU

This does not work for me, that's why I posted to make sure. If I do not
enable TE extension of IGPs, the tunnel refuses to come up, if I disabled
TE-extension at the egress, the tunnel will go down. The response from
others so far pretty much confirmed this. I do not have my configs now, but
if you need I can send them when I get back to office, just to make I did
not miss config anything.

I assume you tested this yourself and made it work, if so, could you please
share your configuration so we all, at least myself, can benefit.

Thanks
LU

Re: Cisco vs. Juniper of LSP setup [7:41268]

2002-04-13 Thread nrf

Ah, now I finally understand what you're saying.

Yes, it is indeed true that, for some very odd reason, you must have some
kind of TED enabled in order for TE to work in IOS. However, what you can
do is create explicit paths that ignore the TED. But it is indeed the case
that if you have no TED, the TE tunnels will drop, even if those tunnels do
not use the TED.

ATM OC3 link utilization Monitor [7:41392]

2002-04-13 Thread Firesox

Folks,
I have a Nortel Centillion 100 ATM switch using OC3 as a connection to ISP.
Could someone please let me know what the best tool is to monitor the
utilization on that link?
I am just trying to baseline the OC3 traffic pattern.
A free tool would be nice.
Thanks

RE: PIX Exec-timeout [7:41382]

I apologize for previous incorrect information. (timeout conn)

Try this instead...

Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Documentation:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/pix/index.htm

PIX Firewall Version 6.1 > Cisco PIX Firewall Command Reference

show telnet timeout

telnet timeout minutes (telnet timeout 5)

(The number of minutes that a Telnet session can be idle before being closed
by PIX Firewall. The default is 5 minutes. The range is 1 to 60 minutes.)

"who" or "show who" with "kill" works manually...

2500 boot ROM's [7:41394]

2002-04-13 Thread The Edward Groove

Hello,

Does anyone have any *extra* of the latest boot ROM's for the 2500
series routers? I can't load 16 MB memory until I upgrade it. I know
they're free from Cisco, but they said the lead time is about 3 weeks
(probably more). Does anyone have any they could send me ASAP?

Just thought I'd give it a try...=)

Thanks,

This works fine for telnets, but doesn't affect console connections. I

I just finished passing all 4 exams. Saying that, I would suggest that the
Cisco Press MCNS book is enough to pass 3 of the 4 exams (not the CSIDS). I
also purchased Boson tests for all the exams minus the CSIDS (it was not
available). I used the Cisco Website info for this exam,,, and with a lot
of luck, I Passed!

Well... if you feel confident that you can pass the foundations exam, go for

knowledge. However, if you know the material already, from experience, I
would take the foundations exam to expedite the cert.

I have worked with the catalyst 4006. The 4006 will still operate
wiht only one power supply. I have tested it under such conditions with
only one power supply, one SUP and four 48 port modules( this is
considered a partial populated chasis ), I assume that on a fully
populated chasis at least two power supplies would be required to run

Good answer Kevin..

Fortunately I do not spend the whole day( and most nites) surfing the web,

Any body thats been to cisco's campus at corp. knows that..

And working in the lan/wan group at cisco almost empowers you to become a
ccie because
thats what we do

And your dead on with the job/money issue...

and I take the advice of the more knowledgeable people on this list that
have been there/done that..
and Mr. Stroebel doesn't appear to be one of those...

Re: CCIE Written Reading.. [7:41017]

2002-04-13 Thread Larry Letterman

Phil is pretty much correct, altho we wont do layoffs..we are not
replacing any body that leaves or does not make it on the performance
issues...

Personally I still think the company is the one of the better places to be
if you love
networking and tech, but to each his own

Phil is also right about the pay, the companies that you really like to be
in don't pay the highest
salary. The supply and demand issue always works for them, since there is no
shortage of people
that want to work for those type of companies...

RE: PIX Exec-timeout [7:41382]

2002-04-13 Thread scott jensen

command syntax:
timeout [conn [hh:mm:ss]] [h323 [hh:mm:ss]] [rpc [hh:mm:ss]] [uauth
[hh:mm:ss]] [udp [hh:mm:ss]] [xlate [hh:mm:ss]]

conn hh:mm:ss Idle time until a connection slot is freed (default value is
12 hours). Use 0:0:0 for the time value to never time out a connection.

Manually:

kill telnet_id Telnet session ID. Use "show who" to display Telnet
session IDs.

RE: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

2002-04-13 Thread Sean Knox

I'm sure someone can provide a more detailed and accurate answer, but
hopefully I can help.

WINS is a TCP and UDP protocol. I imagine an IP HELPER-ADDRESS command might
be of use here. Try a search for WINS on CCO at www.cisco.com.

Sean

Subject: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

I'm having problem with WINS replication to 2 differ servers
Server 1 in Network 1 in Phx (PDC...WINS Server)
Server 2 in Network 2 in LA (BDC...WINS Server)

server1.cisco2600---PPP---cisco2600.server2

The server2 can browse all machines in network 1 and 2 but server 1 cant see
network 2.

I have enabled the TCP ports 42 and 135 on both the routers but still no
success.

The network is NT 4 domain.

Thanks in advance for help

RE: WINS replication problem across PPP network [7:41410]

2002-04-13 Thread Don Nguyen

Ip-helper addresses entries probably won't help in your scenario, they are
used with boradcast services such as DHCP. Try adding a static entry in the
LMHOST file on server pointing to server 2 with the #PRE and #DOM attributes
and use nbtstat -R to reload the netbios cache on server 1 after you add
this to its LMHOST file. This should work

HTH,

Don Nguyen

2500 won't boot...any ideas? [7:41414]

2002-04-13 Thread Edward Sohn

my 2511 was working fine a few days ago with--i believe--11.0xx
software. i created a configuration and saved it. yesterday, i
upgraded the RAM so that i could load 12.2xx.

the router won't fully boot up, and it never goes into the config or
into rommon. i don't get it. again, it was working a few days ago.
unfortunately, i can't put the old chips back in b/c i overwrote them
already--ugh. i loaded up 12.2.7 onto the flash via another router and
tried to boot it up again in the 2522...

here's the output from when i start up the router, to where it hangs...

Incorrectly I said WINS is a TCP and UDP protocol - I was thinking of
netbios. WINS is just TCP.
