Static routes in CCIE LAB (definietion) [7:8515]

2001-06-14 Thread Jacques Allison

When doing the CCIE LAB, one of the first statements is not to use any
static routes if they don't specifically ask for it. Now is a static route
only commands starting with "ip route .." or does this include commands
like:
"ip default-network"
"ip default-gateway"
"default-information originate"

Thanks

Anyone got any advice on equipment that should go into CCIE lab. What has
worked for you. I know that the Cisco web site has the lab equipment list
but what I want to know is LITERALLY what equipment do you have in your lab
or do you know of that has worked for others. Thanks. . this site is awesome?

check out i.p. experts ccie workbook. i just got a copy of it
and it lays out each section for you covering every topic that can possibly
be on the lab. there is also an advanced section with 5 simulated labs -
(one of them is very close to a lab my friend had!) he actually said that
the advanced labs in the workbook are probably harder than the real ccie
lab. (my opinion is that it's better material than ccbootcamp with cheaper
racktime!)

CCIE lab prep. Is there a syllabus? [7:8385]

2001-06-13 Thread Chris Rock

I just passed the CCIE R&S written, and prepared for this exam using the
road map posted on the Cisco web site.

Is there a similar document for the lab?

I asked one of the CCIE's here at work, and he told me to study
"Everything". Needless to say, this was not helpful.

Is there something that will place some specific boundaries on what you need
to study?

I have seen info that EXCLUDES certain topics (X.25, Decnet, Vines...), but
nothing that INCLUDES anything.

thanks

Chris

There are that many people taking the lab. I'm sure Cisco is doing whatever
they can to ease this backload.

FYI: CCIE Lab Scheduling [7:8342]

2001-06-13 Thread Andrew Shappell

Greetings,
I just scheduled my CCIE R&S Lab and found it rather interesting that the
first available dates in RTP are either in two weeks, 6/26/01, or the middle
of February 2002. San Jose was not much better. Either today, 6/13/01, or
the middle of the January 2002. I chose the February date because I needed
the time to make travel arrangements and to do a little more studying. I was
hoping to take the Lab some time this fall, but I guess that is not going to
happen. I can't believe there is a six to eight month wait to take the Lab.
I passed the written Exam in late March 2001. If I would have waited much
longer to schedule the Lab I may have had to take the Written Exam again. I
think it is time that Cisco looks at adding some additional testing
facilities or additional seats the existing sites. Any ideas why there is a
6 to 8 month wait for Lab Exams??? Are there that many people taking the
Lab Exam???

Your documentation approach will probably earn you many points in the lab.
But IMHO put it on paper. The lab elves will mess with whatever they can.

One thing I'm curious about, and this is because I've found this to be an
invaluable tool to use while studying various lab scenarios - are the PCs in
the lab full Windows 9x/2k installations, including Notepad? I've found
that making a consolidated list of interfaces and associated IP addresses,
as well as a list of all networks w/ subnets being used, I can avoid
potential problems and look up what an address is supposed to be very
quickly by having it all in one (electronic) spot.

If someone can comment about this within the NDA specifications, I'd be

Faisal,
This is my understanding of CCIE lab scheduling:
You get scheduled for the 1st slot available.
If you have to take it again, must wait 30 days between attempts.
If you break the code of conduct, must wait a year before next attempt.

After a couple of minutes of searching on CCO I found the following:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/ccie_program/policies.html

Written Exam Expiry
Candidates must attempt the CCIE Lab exam within one year of passing the
CCIE Qualification exam. As long as a candidate attempts the CCIE Lab at
least once every 12 months, the candidate may take up to three years to pass
the Lab Exam. However, if a candidate has not passed the CCIE Lab exam
within three years of passing the written exam, he or she must retake the
CCIE Qualification exam before the candidate will be allowed to schedule the
Lab exam again.

Re: CCIE LAB - Help me please [7:7875]

2001-06-10 Thread Wayne & Therese Lawson

Iyuri,

What I would suggest is that you design a rack consisting of a frame relay
cloud
(one router w/ multiple serial ints) with 3 routers attached. You will need
this to
accomplish the various Frame Relay / OSPF combos. You're also going to want
(at least) one router hanging from your frame attached router via Enet or
TR. I would
also (if your budget allows) purchase a 3920 TR switch, a Cat 5000 and an
ISDN
simulator. (Obviously you're going to want two of your routers to have ISDN
BRI
interfaces.) If you wanted a very complete lab you can then also purchase
an ATM
switch and (if you've got modular routers) ATM & voice modules. This gets
very costly,
but if you shop around you may be able to find some deals. There are always
great deals
on EBAY - you may also want to check with some of the used HW vendors
(http://www.networkhardware.com just to mention a one.) If your budget
doesn't
allow you to purchase such a large amount of HW you may just consider
reserving
time on some of the on-line racks that are available. Good Luck!

Iyuri,

On top of what you already have, you will also need:

A router with one FE (10/100) Ethernet port for ISL/dot1q vlan trunking
2 x Routers with voice capabilities for the VOIP bits
a Cat 5002 would be nice for pracising VLAN's etc.
A router with 4 serial WAN ports to try out Frame Relay etc.
2 routers with ISDN capability with either an ISDN simulator or a real line.
I don't know about the ATM side of things
A LAN Analyzer Software on a PC would be useful to decipher packets etc.
I think you should be set.

btw I never did get FTP working on your server.

Many people use the CCbootcamp lab scenarios to prepare for the CCIE lab. At
http://www.ccbootcamp.com/ there are diagrams of the hardware they rent out
that will be able to accomodate all their lab exercises. If you look at
their hardware layout it will give you a good feel for what is in a well
equipped lab. You may not be able to afford all the items they have (Like
ATM and an ISDN simulator) but most people that i see that are serious about
preparing for the CCIE spring for 7-8 routers and a CAT5000 switch. Some get
by with less some have more. It depends on your situation. There is some
real good info on the CCbootcamp site on what equipment you will need what
books and preperation strategies. I am not at that level yet but it gave me
a good idea of what i should purchase now for my professional certs that
will scale well into a CCIE lab. HTH.

I want to build my own CCIE lab at my home.
I dont know exactly that how many routers I may need for the lab purpose.
I have 1 Cisco 4000 series router (4 serial + 2 Ethernet), 1 Cisco 2503 and 1
Cisco 2509 router. I dont know exactly that how many routers I may need to
complete all scenarios.

Please guide me ...

CCIE Lab dates for RTP [7:6281]

2001-05-29 Thread Aaron

I was wondering if anyone is wanting to change a lab date in the near future
for the RTP Routing and Switching Lab. I have a lab date for the 1/24/02
and don't want to wait that long. I was also wondering if anyone has
figured out how to put your name on the waiting list via the web. I have
called Cisco, but I not heard anything back yet.

Thanks for any responses

Re: CCIE Lab setup [7:4872]

2001-05-27 Thread EA Louie

You'll need to be able to setup the 2511 for term server/console connections
to the LAB routers.

Look at the Cisco CCIE Routing Webpage and click the equipment list link to
see what they use in the CCIE Lab - that will probably answer some of your
questions about whether to replace or not.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/certifications/routing.html

It's true the modular routers will hold their value better, but so do the
multiport 2500's as so kindly pointed out when I asked for help on the
mailing list with my lab setup.

bad idea in my opinion. A NM-4T is going to cost you $1000-$2000.

In contrast, an FSIP4 for a 7000 is only about $200. FSIP8 about $500.
NP-4T (4000 series) $400. See my point?

Thank you.

RE: CCIE LAB EXAM Arrangement [7:5158]

2001-05-19 Thread Jim Brown

If you score less than 20 points on your first day you must wait 6 months.
If you fail and score more than 20 points the candidate can reschedule the
lab in as little as 1 month.

You must attempt the lab at least once within the first year of passing the
written or the candidate must sit the written again.

The candidate has a total of three years to successfully pass the lab after
passing the written.

2001-05-17 Thread Adam Burgess

Rashid,

> I am thinking of replacing my collection of 25xx routers with modular

You should be able to practice the majority of lab simulations on your
2500's, unless you were thinking of purchasing some ATM gear.

> Please can you advise whether it would be advisable to get rid of my 2511
> and buy a 2-Port Asynch NM to give my my 16 Asych RJ45 feeds.

The async modules seem very expensive and just take up a good port on your
2600/3600, that could be used for something else. If you are only using it
for reverse telnet, there is no need to spend the money to upgrade to a
2600/3600.

Don't forget that the 2511 also has two serial ports that can be used in
your lab, a lot of people seem to think that the 2511 is only good as an
access server and nothing else.

> I am also thinking of buying a 4-Port Serial T1 Card for my 3600, to give
me
> 6 Serial interfaces to practise most FR scenarios, instead of buying a

I have a 2621 and 2611 each with 2 x WIC-2T modules, for a total of eight
serial ports. You can configure the routers as a frame relay switch and
tunnel PVC's between individual boxes to provide an eight-way frame relay
switch. This leaves the NM slots available for voice or ATM or whatever
else you wanted to install.

As your router is a 3600, you could also add an NM-2E2W and 2 x WIC-2T
modules so rather than just four serials to a slot, you get 4 serial and 2
ethernet interfaces. Or as an added bonus a NM-1E1R2W and 2 x WIC-2T, to
give you 1 ethernet, 1 token ring and 4 x serial.

I think you would be better served by keeping the 2511 and perhaps getting
rid of a 2500 (or two) to get some modules for the 3600.

Hope this helps.

CCIE Lab setup [7:4872]

2001-05-17 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi,

my currently lab setup at home.I need a little advice.

I am thinking of replacing my collection of 25xx routers with modular
routers to practise lab scenarios for CCIE.

Please can you advise whether it would be advisable to get rid of my 2511
and buy a 2-Port Asynch NM to give my my 16 Asych RJ45 feeds.

I am also thinking of buying a 4-Port Serial T1 Card for my 3600, to give me
6 Serial interfaces to practise most FR scenarios, instead of buying a
2521/2522.

coupled with my regular 2600 with FE, 1003, and 2 x 1750's 4v's (2xFXS Cards
& Bri) . I think I should have enough routers to practise even complex
scenarios.

I believe the modular routers will hold their value better than the 2500's.

Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated

Re: CCIE Lab Scenarios - CCBootcamp Or Solution Lab [7:4586]

2001-05-15 Thread Kin Mak

No! $25k and I am still not ready. These are just training classes to
learning the necessary Cisco requirements for the lab exam. You still have
to put in practical lab hours and these labs put you a step closer in
passing the exam. There are a lot of people in this group that have spent
more money and have on the job experience. Unfortunately for me I only have
limited on the job experience. Everybody's road to CCIE is different. For me
its a long and hard road. The only way I see myself achieving CCIE is to
burn the midnight oil putting in a lot rack time working on these labs.

Thanks for your advice anyway.

Kin,

$25k and you still aren't ready for the exam? that's a frighteningly high
investment, but I guess the cost of the Lab exam will be a relative
drop-in-the-bucket after that.

I haven't taken either of the labs you mention, but if you haven't worked on
ATM and Voice configurations, make sure that those are included in one or
both of those labs.

who is at about the same stage of the game. I have a decent sized Lab with

Re: VOIP on CCIE Lab [7:3899]

2001-05-09 Thread Brian

I say if your on a budget and building a CCIE lab, go with a 262x minimum.

Why? Because you pick up FastEthernet (ISL, dot1q, etc) at the same time.

3620 used price is like $1200-$1500
a NM-1FE for a 3600 is like $800

yet a 2620 is only about $1200 used

The 1750's FE cannot do ISL or dot1q.

In fact, i would say sell the 3620 and get a 2620 or 2621, you lose
nothing, and gain FastEthernet.

VOIP on CCIE Lab [7:3899]

2001-05-09 Thread Rashid Lohiya

Hi Guys,

Can anyone suggest the minimum hardware requirements to practise the VOIP
bits on the CCIE labs.

I am thinking of buying the cards, but there is so much out there and I am
truly confused.

My friend has suggested I buy myself 2 x 1750's with DSP and FXS cards and I
should be able to configure and test end-to-end voice connectivity. He said
this was the cheapest option for me. I am just looking for a 2nd opinion.

I have a 1000, 4 x 2500's and a 3620 router.

Any other ideas, I am on a pretty tight budget.

Re: Question .. CCIE lab and scheduling! [7:2461]

2001-04-29 Thread Jason

Guess it's nice to be called "stupid" by someone who asked for advises.
Teach all of us not to response in future to stupid questions in the first
place.
Why did you bother to take the written in the first place, why not be
prepared for the lab and then take the written ? Sure as hell save all your
headaches !!
Between waiting 6 months and doing the lab at the nearest possible time, I'm
sure there are enough people "smart enough" to tell you that it might just
be worth it.

Re: Question .. CCIE lab and scheduling! [7:2461]

2001-04-29 Thread Tony

I was pretty sure that was the case ... With the long lead times to get into
the lab I just figured by now Cisco would have
wised up and realized that the standard process would be to pass the written
THEN work on lab prep for at least 6 months
before FORKING up $1250 to schedule a lab rather then pass the written then
sign up for the lab knowing good and well that you will not pass it with
paper preparation only!! I'd rather feel good about the lab FIRST then
schedule it and owe Cisco the money
whether I am ready or not in 6 months.

For all that responded with the "go to an international test site" ... come
on guys .. get real .. Pay thousands for travel or take another $200 (or now
300) test. Anyone smart enough to be pursuing their CCIE knows the answer
to that question!

Thanks,

Tony

Hi

You have one year from the day you passed the written to make your first
attpemt at the lab. You then have a total of three years from the time you
passed the written to pass the lab. You might want to schedule the lab on
the east coast as their wait times seem to be less. Also write
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask them for advice/help.

BTW, the written has a $300 price now...

Question .. CCIE lab and scheduling! [7:2461]

2001-04-29 Thread Tony

I've got a question that someone here will know the answer to.

I took my CCIE written last August and due to a busy work schedule and lots
of other certification requirements (AVVID, WLAN and other vendors) I have
not been able to schedule my lab. Now I'm getting ready to change jobs and
will immediately be looking to
schedule my lab at the new company. If the written test is only good for a
year ... when does this expiration kick in ? Is it based on
the day you TAKE the lab or when you sign up to take the lab? With the long
wait to get into the lab will I be required to spend another $200 if my lab
can't happen before August? I'm sure someone who has taken the lab has been
through this same scenario
already.

Thanks for your input ..

I have only been to the Halifax site. It has cheap hotels (if you are
spending in US $$), five-minute walk to the CCIE lab, very fair and friendly
Proctors, plus a historical city to see (for which one may not have the
time).

And if you manage to pass, you can celebrate with a feast of fine lobsters.

Buy a 6400 ;-p

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/as/6400/

Cheaper to order ADSL if you can get it. However, it's pretty much
pointless for real ATM practice (just read a sample config for an 827), as
you can't change the ISP side of things.

Re: CCIE lab equipment - VOIP help needed. [7:1774]

2001-04-25 Thread Jon

To do DSL entirely within the lab would require having the provider gear
(DSLAM etc.) in the lab. Same as ISDN, ATM, X.25, or Frame-Relay --
except the last two can be emulated by a Cisco Router. To do ATM
switching, you need an ATM switch, and an ISDN switch to do ISDN
switching. The DSL "modem" is just the circuit endpoint/CPE.

Fortunately, if you have to know how to provision DSL provider equipment,
your employer will likely send you to some telco schools. The bits you
should know how to do (user-end ISDN or DSL configs) can be done with a
live DSL or ISDN line, easy enough to get, if you're within range of the
telco.

I was not suggesting that you have to have DSL to do VoIP with this
router, you can connect it to the network over the ethernet interface, and
run VoIP over that circuit.

The 1750-4v is a good suggestion for a VoIP router, but it's around $2k --
the 827-4v has less memory and a slower processor, but is around $1k. For
a production network, it's a kludge, because it only has the DSL WAN port
-- you'd need another router to connect the 827-4v to your WAN. However,
for a practice lab, I'd rather get two routers than one, for the same
money. Then you can play with QoS and LAN/WAN traffic engineering, and
watch the circuit suffer without that QoS.

Might look at the 827-4v router, as well. It's an Alcatel-DSL modem, with
an ethernet interface and four FXS interfaces. Should be able to buy two
of them for what a single 1700 and voice modules cost, and connect them

What would enterprise give you that you need. Wouldn't that be a low cost
solution for voice. You could learn the enterprise feature set on another
router.

Don't forget the 3600's do Voice, ATM, & Fast Ethernet. You may find the
4500 Fast Ethernet modules cost more than anything for 3600 router. We
replaced a lot of Government 45's & 4700's with 3600 routers, when pricing
modules. If you have the 4500's already, I would think the 1700's would be
the best Voice router for the money. I would assume- with a reasonable
discount, you could outfit 2 complete Voice 1700's for around 3,000.

Michael,

Hi! I'd recommend getting a couple of 2513s in addition to the gear you
have listed. I'd also recommend a couple of 2503s or 04s and an ISDN
simulator (unless you were planning to put the BRI modules in the 4xxx
routers). The hardware you are going to purchase should really be focused
around the labs you are going to practice with (or teach). Let me know if
you need anymore info.

I am putting together a document for my company to purchase 5 CCIE labs and
I need help with the VOIP equip part.
I plan on using
3 2501's
1 25011
3 4000M
2 4500's
1 Catalyst 5000
1 Catalyst 3920 tr switch
1 Lightstream 100 ATM switch

The 2 of the 4500's will have ATM interfaces and 1 of those 2 will have an 4
port serial and the other a FastEthernet interface to support trunking for
the 5000 switch which will have a Sup II module and the 12 port 10/100
module. This leaves one open slot per 4500, could I implement voice on these
routers and what card would I need? Any other outside equipment required?
What memory requirements?
Thanks for helping my laziness as I'm tired of pouring over the CCO cd.

Switching on the CCIE Lab Exam [7:1296]

2001-04-19 Thread Lupi, Guy

I asked this question before, and someone sent some helpful info, but I am
looking for something more specific. I know the 5000 series is the switch
used in the lab, but is the focus more on layer 2 or layer 3? I am going to
get a 5000 series switch but I wanted to know if I should save myself the
cost of the RSM, or if I absolutely need it. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to get various opinions of several CCIE Lab Prep courses. I
already know about MentorTech's ECP1. I am already registered for that class
in August. I want to know if anyone has opinions on these courses.

Subject: CCIE Lab Report - unsuccesful

Hey, everyone, how you all been?

The short story is I did not make it to day 2. The rest of this is a bit
long winded, and easily skipped.

First of all, I was quite pleased to find upon reading through my Day 1
scenario that there was nothing I couldn't do, given time. There are
plenty
of practice labs from several different sources which cover all the core
topics, so there were no surprises for me.

Secondly, I was quite pleased when during my review of Day 1 results
with
the proctor, he told me they were going to change the written
instruction
on a particular section because of the solution I used. I'm actually
quite
surprised it hasn't been done before. I was grudgingly given points,
although I was told my solution was definitely not what they had in
mind.

However, in the end, it was a few simple omissions that cost me the
points
I would have needed to squeak into Day 2.

Only one of the six of us who began together was invited to the second
day.

Things I learned:

1) having the core topics down cold is CRUCIAL. No kidding!

2) Time is crucial, but not, I believe, in the way I have seen it
discussed
in many places. I highly doubt that typing 80 words a minute versus my
20
WPM was the difference. Not when I spent as much time as I did
contemplating. You can't think it. You have to know it.

By 2:00 p.m. I knew I didn't have a prayer of hitting all the
requirements.
At that point I started counting points, putting myself in a defensive
mode.
By quitting time, if I got full credit for everything I thought I
deserved,
I would have had 31 points. As I found out in my review, I missed a few
simple things, and blew myself out of the water. This leads back to the
internalization of the core topics. You can't be thinking about how to
configure anything. You have to just bang them out, the same way you
bang
out shaving or washing your hands or eating your lunch.

3) Methodology is crucial. You have to have a good methodology that is
internalized and is habitual. You can't be thinking "what's next?" I
don't
believe it matters what your methodology is, so long as you are
consistent
and quick. My own methodology failed me because I was constantly
adjusting,
rather than banging it out.

4) I spent a good two hours last night in my hotel room debriefing
myself. I
have six pages of notes regarding my day one experience. This will form
the
basis of my study plan for my second attempt. I know that it is highly
unlikely I will have a scenario like the one I just worked on next time
through. But I will focus on methodology and speed.

5) Good rapport with the proctor is helpful. I was able to get the
information I needed by carefully wording my questions and making sure
that
my desired result was understood. The proctor is under a bit of stress
himself, with so many folks vying for his attention. He may think you
are
asking something you are not. I made sure that if I was not getting an
answer that made sense that I clarified my request, so that the answer
was
one that helped me understand. I will say also that the test I saw was
reasonably clear. The questions I had tended to be the result of outputs
from various show and debug commands, to clarify what the expectation
was.

A few other comments:

I was far too aggressive in scheduling my lab date. Should have pushed
it
out 60 days. Don't be in a hurry. Those without a lot of hands on need
to
spend several months of several hours a day practicing. No two ways
about
it.

There has been a lot of discussion about the patch panels used in the
lab.
All I can say is that the panels are clearly labeled. IMHO you have
nothing
to worry about. That said, I did have to revisit the rack twice, in
order to
make a cabling change. This was purely the result of a chicken or egg
situation, and not due to any difficulty with the rack itself. People
with
home labs know well the issue with hooking up routers back to back.

I sat next to a guy this morning ( a day 1 candidate ) who was getting
up
every few minutes and going to the back of the rack to move cables
around.
Completely unnecessary and driving the proctor nuts. There is no need
for
any candidate to touch the back of the rack.

You can't let little stuff stop you. Those with extensive hands on
experience know that sometimes routers do funny things like boot into
rommon> or behave as if there is an extensive paste going on in the
configuration dialogue. I have a router here at home that boots into
rommon
once in a while. A reload has always done the trick ( knock on wood )
sometimes leaning on control-

For a little visualization, point your browser to
http://www.tara.ca/ourlabs/ccie.html and peak at Halifax.
They're redesigned their site -- they used to have a Quicktime 360 degree
"movie" of the lab. Back when I was still teaching CCIE prep classes
I used to show it to people. It helped take the edge off of the unknown.

Re: CCIE Lab Report - unsuccesful

2001-04-08 Thread Tim Ross

Chuck,

I am surprised that you didn't pass on the first attempt (you're scaring
me). But I also think that it is an important part of the process. My first
attempt will be in August. Failing the Lab makes us see the value and
difficulty of the lab; appreciate the level of expertise required to pass;
and the only way this certification can hold its value in the future. You
said that you could do everything in the lab, but overlooked some simple
things that kept you out of Day 2. It might be something completely
different for me, but the Lab is where we find these things out, so we will
be detail oriented, and at a consistent level of expertise when passing the
lab.

Study hard and good luck,

Tim
