Re: Cisco Training [7:71811]

I can see that point of view too, although it's an expensive 12 days, it may
be the only way if you're that busy.
When my employer needed CCNP a few years ago, I negotiated study leave
rather than going on the courses, so I could sit at home with the books and
a bunch of routers. They save a couple of grand per week.
I think it depends on what level you're at. If you've done a fair bit of
hands on anyway, then the courses can waste a lot of time going over old
ground.

I prefer the book and a bit of peace and quiet with the mobile phone turned
off. Luckily my insomnia gives me a few hours after my family go to bed. If
your family are still at home during the day, study leave may not be a good
thing.
You could always leave the book in the bathroom and do it bit by bit.
Careful if you read for too long though you can lose the use of your legs
completely :-)

Horses for courses I suppose.

Good Luck anyway

I do agree with you on this however the I was referring to the "boot
camp" courses. Had I taken all the courses individually that I took at
boot camp I would have gained a lot more from them. During boot camp
you only learn the very minimum needed to get you throught the exams.
If you have the option to take the courses individually vs. taking the
boot camp, I would strongly suggest the individual courses.

I have to disagree with the previous answers. I took the BSCI class
November 2002. It was great. Perhaps my experience level was lower but
I really learned a lot and the instructor was quite knowledgable and a
good teacher to boot. I should have taken the test within a few weeks
of coming back from the class but I got side tracked on a project. When
I hunkered down last month to prepare the class came back to me. Also
this place used the Cisco books but supplemented them with their own
labs. I was very pleased. I will agree that the classes are quite
expensive, but training is one of the reasons I work where I do. I'm
taking another class this
month. If it's provided by your employer jump on the chance.

Re: Cisco Training [7:71811]

2003-07-03 Thread Bikespace
In my opinion the courses are a quick cram if you haven't got the time. I
have used both. I did the switching course a few years ago, but had read the
book already. I got to Thursday before I learnt a single thing.
If you read the book and ask for clarification of things you don't
understand (using Groupstudy) then I think you come out the other side
knowing more.
If you want a week off work at a leisurely pace with more breaks than you've
had in the last two years and an early knock off time, then dig deep and get
on a course.
I may be being a little unfair there, but it doesn't take long to get
through most of the CCNP books if you allocate an hour or two a day, and if
you get one of the poorer instructors that's all he'll do anyway - read the
notes out to you. I always read through and don't go on to the next page
until I've understood the current one. Skim reading gets you nowhere. As I'm
going along I write down the bits that actually need to be learnt parrot
fashion (things like administrative distances/types of switching etc), and
by the end of it, I've understood all the topics and I've just got a cram
sheet to study.
Won't work for everyone, but it's one method.
Some lads in our office will read the book 5 times understanding a little
more each time. Doesn't work for me - I can read through 5 pages without
actually taking in anything because I'm still getting my head around the
previous topic.

My two penneth anyway.
Use your money on more lab kit.

I have to agree. I took the CCNP boot camp and although I was happy that I
passed the CCNP afterwards, I was very dissapointed with the course and the
knowledge I gained from it. The course gives you just enough to get by the
exam. If I had to do it again I certainly would not have gone through the
boot camp. I had a hard time relating the material I learn in class to real
world issue. The course material was good for some referencing but not to
get you through real-world issue. That is were the months or year(s) of
hands-on comes into play. Whatever you decide to do try to get your company
to pay for it because it is not cheap. If they dont...well atleast you will
have a tax right-off. Good luck.

The 5 day classes is call a bootcamp. They cram everything. Not a good idea
if you want to be a good cisco engineer.
I pass the CCNP by reading the books and taking a regular class, and messing
with some lab routers at my job.
My company paid for it. Try to get your company to pay it if possible.

By reading the Cisco press books (comes in a bundle of 4), and exam crams,
you'll be fine.

Take the time to read the materials. You'll be better off.

Hi,

You will succeed through self-study; I am now a CCDP through self-study and
it has taken me some time :)

I would say that those 5-day courses are far too expensive, especially now
that you have the equipment.

Unless you are in hurry to get the CCNP; if you are not, just study one
chapter per day. This is possible (one chapter per day), though for routing
(BSCI), it may take longer if you are completely new to those routing
protocols.

Honestly, there is no need to spend all the money on those 5-day courses,
according to me. I do not have any experience with networking and I have
steadily studied until I am now a CCDP, sucessfully doing 6 exams, though I
had to do Cisco Internetwork Design (CID 640-025) twice.

Also, when you buy your own materials, they remain with you after the tests.
Okay, self-study may be the hard way to acquire the knowledge, but by the
time you are ready for a test, you really feel you have got the
knowledgethis is the important thing to me.

Good Luck.

Mwalie

All,
I am looking to take the CSPFA training by Authorized Cisco Training
Companies. Reviewing the cisco web page I've found the following companies
and wanted to know:

  - If anyone here has taken any courses with the companies
  - The overall experience of the training provided

Recently a co-worker and I attended the CSVPN training, but by two different
companies (and yes both of these companies are listed on Cisco's website).
His training experience was negative mine was all positive. Since I am
paying with my own money for this training I obviously do not want to have a
negative experience so honest, helpful input would be greatly appreciated
from the group!

  The companies in question are:

 Skyline Computer Corporation
 Sunset Learning
 Tech Data Education

Thank you all in advance for any feedback!

Thanks to you both for taking the time to relay your experiences. I think I
will be going with the WaveTech Bootcamp seems like a reasonable deal as it
includes the Cisco books and the CCIE written exam included in the price. My
company is paying for it so the Netgun sounds the best but it's a bit too
pricey in this climate not sure I could justify it.

I agree I see the WaveTech bootcamp as a revision excercise to help
re-inforce your knowledge not say learn it from scratch. I think it could
work for me.

Hi Gary

I attended the NetGun Academy courses last year in preparation for the
lab, and I found the courses to be extremely helpful. There are 6
courses, held over a period of 6 months, and they take you through the
basics os each topic in turn, building up towards the end of each week
into more complex configs. The labs you do not only include the subject
you are currently learning, but also the topics you have previously
learnt, so building up your ability to deal with more complex configs.
The last week culminates in what they call the "Super Lab", which
combines everything you have learnt during the previous 5 courses. I
thoroughly recommend the NetGun course, although the only drawback is
that it is expensive. When I did it, the price tag was #11,000, but I
was lucky enough to have my company pay that for me. If you can get
your employer to pay for it, then I say go for it

I've been on the Wave Tech bootcamps.
Both for Cisco and Microsoft, only one instructor showed any 'real-world'
knowledge and could answer confidently questions which were 'off-track'.

This wasn't particularly a problem for me, as I viewed the course as
revision of what I already knew, and was the only way I could force myself
to do an exam (if it's left to me I just keep putting it off!).

I would certainly recommend them again, if this is the approach that you
want(revision), but if you need to learn the info don't do a bootcamp.

Ben,

I am not aware of any formalized training programs in the Denver area for
the written exam. However, I am organizing a study group with another
gentleman here in the Denver area specifically to tackle the CCIE written.
You are more than welcome to contact me offline if you are interested in

I would like to say that Heinz Ulm has by far the best word

Germany. Take a look at URL - www.heinzulm.com

The only factor in taking this course is the price. His
website is also featured on www.iponeverything.net as he is
also a CCIE. Hope this helps.

Off Topic - DQoS Training humor [7:54931]

2002-10-05 Thread Chuck's Long Road

Recently I completed the DQoS class offered by Knowledge Net (
www.knowledgenet,com )

Let me first say this is the second class I have taken from them. Web for
video, 800 call for audio. Works great. I've enjoyed both classes immensely.
Good teachers, even if they do all sound like a.m. radio disk jockeys. I've
even had the pleasure of meeting a couple of Groupstudy regulars in the
classes I've taken.

Any case, as part of the price, a student gets to access labs ( simulated
routers, so there are some limitations )

Since this is QoS, a few of the labs showed effects of voice, video, and
data with and without various classification, marking, and queuing features
configured.

Once in a while, after you observe the results of your configs, a question
will pop up, asking what happened and why.

Of course the audio video, having to come through not only the lab ware, but
also across the net and through my corporate VPN, often is totally without
merit, so that it is completely accidental if anything actually observed
resembles anything you are supposed to have observed.

For example, the video is an endless loop of John Chambers introducing
himself. It suffers all the characteristics of jitter and delay no matter
what QoS features are or are not configured. Just like the proverbial
samurai movie. Sometimes the telephone voice works, sometimes it doesn't,
not matter what the configuration. Voice calls would go through ( with very
poor quality ) even if the correct answer to the question was that they did
not.

Well, I thought it was funny. I guess you have to be there. :->

I would suggest just going through the Cisco Press Books and trying to build
a small lab. Get yourself a PIX 501, a couple of routers and a switch, and
an NT server to run the eval copy of CS ACS. There is no reason to shell
out thousands of $$$ to be trained on a entry to mid-level cert.

Hi Frank,
The password reset function is a bit confusing, but it does work.
Other folks have had similar problems in the past, but they just clicked on
"Feedback" and sent me an email asking me to manually reset it.
If you want to send me an email (off the list) with your username, I'll be
happy to do the same for you :-)

As an aside, your web site does nothing for me so to speak. I registered,
and never received an email giving me a password. If I select 'Forgot
Password' and ask it to send it to me, it says it did, but I never receive
anything.
I tried to register again as a new account, but it complains because 'that

Not much of a help to me since it doesn't send me anything and won't let me
re-register.

Good Luck!

Hi John,

I run a website that has exactly what you are looking for.
Out of the hundred plus training docs/study guides, there's only 1 that's
for sale (The Ultimate CCIE Study Guide, $15.95), the rest are free and
include Study guides for preparing for Cisco's CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP and

P.S. The website does require a login, but it's free (I just like to know

Re: Cisco IOS Training [7:44411]

2002-05-17 Thread dre

I'm not a real Cisco programmer, nor I am really much of a programmer at
all.
I would like to hear real answers, but here is where I would start, if I
were you...

Here is ground zero:
The C Programming Language, 2nd Edition; ISBN 0131103628
The Standard C Library; ISBN 0131315099
Applying RCS and SCCS; ISBN 1565921178

But you'll also need some of this stuff:
Interconnection Networks: An Engineering Approach
Inside Cisco IOS Software Architecture
TCP/IP Illustrated Volume II
OSPF Complete Implementation
The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System
TCP/IP and Linux Protocol Implementation
4.4 BSD Programmer's Supplementary Documents
Applied Cryptography
Introduction to Algorithms, Second Edition
The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-3 Boxed Set
Algorithms in C, Parts 1-5
(list could become exhaustive).

Except this to take about 5-10 years to learn and only if you already
have a Masters/Ph.D in Computer Science. If you already have the
C programming knowledge, just start going to IETF, IEEE Comsoc/
Networking, and ACM meetings and reading all their publications
that have to do with various Internetworking concepts that interest
you.

RE: CCNP Training kit [7:40915]

2002-04-09 Thread Matthew Meiers

The kit is just way too small for the amount of information you are to
know for CCNP. The entire section on BGP4 in the routing book is only
100 pages. I am telling you that there is no way that you will know BGP
well enough to pass the exam after reading that section. I used CCIE
study guides to pass my CCNP. The CCIE books from Cisco Press are much
more complete, as well they should be, but you will KNOW the topic, not
just "know" the topic.

Does this clarify?

They should allow people who bought it to trade it in for books or give
credit for this on Ciscopress.com. I will admit I got scammed by it. It
looked really good when they advertised it. The way they made it out,
you would have though it was like the Sybex CCNP virtual Trainer. This
was a major scam, and I am sure they sold thousands of these. It is
probably funny to most, except for the people who paid over $100 for it.

Just wanted to say that anyone who bought the CCNP Training kit
Software, ISBN 1587200422, you can return it, and they will give you a
completely new CD VS 2.0. I bought this Training kit, it has so many
wrong answers, and so many bugs I though I was on candid camera. They
did offer a SP1 update right after the product was released, but that
didn't help much. This is a first time that I have heard of a total
recall of a software product. I really could write like 20 pages about
what was wrong with the kit, it was that bad. Well, just thought I
would share this, if anyone bought it, because I didn't know. I am on
the Cisco press mailing list, and I registered my product, but they
never bothered to contact me concerning this. This is the very last time
I buy software without asking anyone else if they used it. Well, I guess
I am going to send away for the version 2, to see if it is any better.
It's a little late now, especially since I am half way though my CCNP.
Ciscopress really dropped the ball on this one, especially since most of
the people who bought it didn't know any better about the answers being
mostly wrong, myself included. Ironically I failed routing using the
kit. I passed routing and switching since then, using other material.

To add to this comment, for giggles I went over one of these *cheet sheets*
that folks seem to so in love with.. 100 questions.. 4 not usable due to
missing exibits and the caption *use your best judgement*... another 3 were
just plain wrong(verified by looking up in books instead of memory) and
several more were suspect...

Cheating doesnt pay..

So where does that leave us where the dark side is incorrect AND the good
guys put out such a shoddy product?

I used Transcender with ok results, Beachhead had errors on their CCNA..
might be corrected now, Boson was spotty in quality but my experience is
limited with their product and may not respresentive of their current
product. Exam Prep is now toast unless picked up by someone else.

I do like the material by CCxx Productions.

I used the Cisco Academy semester 5-6 books and materials. That seems to be
pretty good but I did find many *small* errors in the labs.. things like
printing 172. when they meant 192.. I did find a few missing
commands but in most cases they worked as they should.

As you know with MP3, you won't really make much money because it's so
easily copy-able. You'd be on Napster, Morpheus, WinMX in no time. If you

Audio Training, was Re: Re: Sample Rate [7:36566]

2002-03-01 Thread John Neiberger

I know that I like this sort of product and I wish I'd had more of this
sort of thing available when I first started out in this field. For
certain types of learners, hearing someone discuss the topic allows it
to sink in better than reading alone. I'm definitely that type of
learner.

One problem I've seen with some audio-based training is the pricing.
IMO, they are often priced too high. While audio training is quite nice
to have, it's not necessarily as portable as books, for instance,
although that is changing quickly. Pretty soon everyone will have a
portable MP3 player and/or CD burners and they'd easily be able to go
mobile instead of sitting glued in front of their PCs.

Speaking of sample rates, I am playing with the idea of offering audio

training using MP3 files. I have prepared such a training on WAN
Troubleshooting. I'd love to get some feedback. This audio training
will
help people studying for the Support test especially. It's 40 minutes.
This
means the file is huge, so don't try this at home on a modem line. The
file
is available for download here:

Please send me some feedback. Would you find such a product line
helpful?
Would you pay for MP3 audio training files?

I used CCNP Virtual lab by Sybex and ended up shipping them 128 CLI bugs in
just Remote
Access and
Support part. At CCNA level, you don't need much so you are satisfied. Be
careful while
buying
a sim for CCNP or higher.

Jason,

You should take a look at the sim program from www.routersim.com.
I am persuing my CCNA with this sim and looking at getting their CCNP

CCNP training kit with hardware? [7:35416]

2002-02-14 Thread Jason Price

I was recently laid off, and am planning on pursuing my CCNP in the
meantime. I am looking to find a commercially available CCNP training kit
that includes the appropriate hardware (routers, switches, etc). Due to
circumstances I cannot divulge further, I cannot just buy the hardware and
training materials separately and assemble it that way - it must be a
commercially available "kit". Does anyone know of anything like this?

Thanks.

Jason

Re: where is wireless training online? [7:34003]

2002-01-31 Thread Kevin Wigle

I suppose you're talking about the on-line training Cisco provides for their
partners.

You can try here:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/pec/peclogin.html

but you will need a CCO login that associates you with a partner.

On that site there is plenty of training, a lot free - some you pay for.

You have to get there through PEC on Cisco's web site for their free
training , so don't log onto logilent.com

Go to http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/pec/peclogin.html

and click on the logilent box on the left with logilents info in it.
They're real routers to play with.

Bruce, I really wish you lived in the S.F. Bay Area!! And I hope that other
CCSIs follow your lead.

(BTW, my husband's gearing up to do something similar to this but in PC

Hello,

I am a Cisco Instructor and have been toying with the idea of running very
low-cost classes that would be affordable for those not sponsored by a
corporation or rich enough to pay $2000 or more per class.
I was considering about maybe $200 to cover costs and equipment. (If someone
could not afford even that we could work something out...)

While I got my CCSI at Mentor (formerly Chesapeake) and recently have been
doing contract training at places like Sprint and Verizon, I can
still remember trying to get started, to get training, and to get that
proverbial "foot in the door". I'd like to use some of my "off" weeks when
I'm not doing corporate training to help other people get their Cisco
certifications and a good start in this career.

Classes would be held at my house, which is located just south of
Washington, DC. in beautiful Fort Washington, Maryland.

Please let me know if you think that such classes would be useful and of
interest.

I'm glad you posted this. I'm considering doing the exact same thing at
my home. It seems that given the high cost of formal training, some
sort of low-cost classes or mentoring would be quite useful.

reply.

Bruce Caslow is working at NetMasterClass LLC. He and Val
Pavlichenko are teaching new CCIE Lab Preparation courses - RS-NMC-1 and
RS-NMC-2. There is a class being held this week in Reston, Virginia.
Details, schedules, and outlines of the courses and an e-mail address
can be found at http://www.netmasterclass.net.

Note - I am affiliated with NMC.

Cheers, Fred.

Re: Can somebody recommend good CCIE lab test training class? [7:26445]

2001-11-15 Thread Fred Ingham

Have you passed your written test? Assuming so, there are many
references in the archives of ccielab.
There are several options available and you can choose based on cost,
schedule, and location.

I recommend the netmasterclass RS-NMC-1 course, taught by the CCIE's who
wrote the book, and who developed the BRS and ECP1/2 courses, Caslow and
Pavlichenko.
(note - I am affiliated with NMC.) http://www.netmasterclass.net for
details.

Do not enroll with anyone claiming to be teaching the ECP1 or ECP2
class; Mentor Technologies is in Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, and the principal
instructors for the old ECP courses are now teaching the one day lab
RS-NMC-1 and RS-NMC-2 courses.

HTH, Fred.

I am preparing for the lab test and considering to take a training class,
even though I have a pretty good home lab and access to all types of
equipment at work.

I wonder if anyone can recommand a good train class.

Thanks

IP Multicast Training materials [7:24814]

2001-10-31 Thread Karen Young

Just ran across this and figured that I would pass it on.

Cisco IP Multicast Groups External Homepage
ftp://ftpeng.cisco.com/ipmulticast.html

This is not the actual Cisco Technology page on IP Multicast, it seems to
be a page meant for the development teams as an external gateway for IETF
working groups, etc...

The training material in the subject line is located about 1/3 of the way
down. The link is titled "Cisco Internal IP Multicast Training Material"

ftp://ftpeng.cisco.com/ipmulticast/training/index.html

Looks to be a LOT of good stuff at this site.

Karen
