Check out Nantechthey have a BGP route generator for windows and it
includes a traffic generator for testing with different service types. We
use it in our lab and it works pretty good for $75.

If your company has the money, check out SmartBits. Even Cisco use it to
test their products.

I have no association with either SmartBits or Cisco but have used the
product to test the Cos/QoS features of Cisco routers.

Re: Loopback Testing [7:63515]

2003-02-21 Thread Henry D.
Actually, Frame Relay switches don't forward the loop messages received on
local
port to the remote port. You can only loop between each end router and it's
local
Frame Relay switch. So, unless this is a cross-over simulation, you won't be
able to achieve end-to-end loop. So, you can do loopback tests between each
end router and it's Frame Switch. As long as those tests show fine - and
your
configuration is correct :-) - and you still have issues it might simply be
the telco
problem. But most often than not, you gotta prove it to them by running
these tests.

CL: Side_1frame_relay--QoS_Router---token_ringSide_2

I ping from routers in both sides. All QoS policy is configured on the QoS
router. BTW, plain old access-lists applied to interfaces exhibeted the same
problem. It would appear that the access-list process was not identifying
the ping packets as having the particular ToS bits marked,

I think I stated in a different post that all packets were apparently being
identified as IP packets with no ToS bit set.

CL: all three.

WRED on the interfaces. I have done WRED as part of the MQC process, using
the class-map match access-group command.

CL: on my currenly running test check this:

deny icmp any any precedence flash
deny icmp any any precedence flash-override
deny ip any any precedence flash-override
deny ip any any precedence flash
deny ip any any precedence immediate
permit ip any any (9797 matches)

See how everything matches the last line - permit ip any any ?

CL: I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't a 2500 IOS thing. I'm using
12.1.5T10, which should work. I'm following along in the DQoS class book.

My question concerns pointers to resources where we can find (semi-)standard
testing practices and or procedures. We currently have some in place but
would like to ensure we are doing all we can, the best, safest, cost
efficient way to work within the system.

I have found some resources in Pricillia's Top Down Network Designs,
thank you Pricillia. Are there any others?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you have experience on Perl, you can write your script easily using
modules NET::Telnet::Cisco and Mail::Sender.

Group,

I would like help with writting a script that dials out to all my
out-of-band 56k modems connected to my terminal servers and verify
connectivity. If connectivity is not working it would send out an email to
the Engineer telling the name of the device not working. Any help would be
appriciated.

Thanks,

You can assign an IP address to the interfaces and ping each other. You
don't have to have hosts connected to the interface for the interface
connectivity.

Re: Help on testing connectivity between two interfaces [7:31688]

2002-01-11 Thread John Neiberger

Let me make sure I know what you're asking.

e0-RouterA---(serial)--RouterB---e0

You want to verify that a host on the ethernet network on A can reach a
host on the Router B ethernet network? If so, perhaps extended ping is
what you're looking for:

routerA#ping
Protocol [ip]:
Target IP address:
Repeat count [5]:
Datagram size [100]:
Timeout in seconds [2]:
Extended commands [n]: y
Source address or interface: ethernet0
Type of service [0]:
Set DF bit in IP header? [no]:
Validate reply data? [no]:
Data pattern [0xABCD]:
Loose, Strict, Record, Timestamp, Verbose[none]:
Sweep range of sizes [n]:
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to , timeout is 2
seconds:
!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 24/26/28
ms
routerA#

Is that what you're looking for or are you trying to do something
else?

Regards,
John

If you have nothing connected to the Ethernet interfaces they will appear as
down. Configure no keepalive on the interfaces and they will be up up. As
already answered extended ping is the way to simulate traffic from those
interfaces.

ISDN testing software [7:28350]

2001-12-06 Thread Danny Rising II

does any have a script already written that I could use to run ISDN testing,
I have about 900 sites that I need to test one a week and verify that their
backup line is working, We currently have a script that a guy wrote a while
back that is doing the testing, the problem with his script is that if a
site has more than one BRI interface that it will not test correctly. The
one he has will login to the router, enable ping the dialer map, see if it
has two active layer three calls and make sure it stays up for at least 30
seconds, long enough to make sure there is no authentication problems, and
negotiation problems, or Telco problems. If you know of a perl script that
will tell you that please let me know. Also if it will tell you how much the
circuit is costing you. He has a old script that will log into the headend
routers, or access servers and look at the log and pull all data that shows
a connection from the site, and how long it was connected, then it will
calculate the cost on what our carrier is charging us for long distance. The
would be useful if anyone has something that can do these and report to us.

If you're trying to make it work in Linux I'd suggest a book called

I thought Halifax was a great place to test. The town is beautiful and
relaxing. Great seafood and our Canadian friends know how to make a good
Beer. When there go to the waterfront area have a nice C$12.00 Lobster
dinner and visit the Titanic museum. Oh ya, no complaints about the testing
facility.

Can't stress enough the importance of the laid back atmosphere in Halifax.
You don't want to be stressed out before you arrive at the Testing center.

problem about testing cisco GBIC ZX [7:19171]

2001-09-09 Thread Ah Wang (^_*) [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear all :

I 've are problem about testing cisco GBIC ZX in GSR. I just 've 50 M
single mode fiber.
Would you mind give me some information for test the GBIC.

Story :
Our client 've order 3 GBIC for Three-port Gigabit Ethernet Card .
But, some problem in 2 GBIC can't pass connection test.

Test 1 )
I use the SC fiber cross at both GI port at e.g ( Gi2/0 to Gi 3/0).
The both 3GE-GBIC-SC status can not active the all LED is off.
I 've try to sweep the TX RX position and sweep to next Gigabit
Ethernet module..etc.
Still no response .

Test 2 )
Next test, it test is use the one fiber cable only (single side). Make
the GBIC TX RX in loop at single fiber. Just one GBIC can enable
up. Other GBIC still is no response !
Remark : In this section the fiber have tested at both tx rx is up.

Our GBIC is 1000BASE-ZX.

Following massage back from TAC:
ZX can reach about 70km, it is the most powerful one GBIC. Be sure to
use attenuator,
otherwise GBIC may be damaged by overpower level laser!!!

In order to explain different performance from your 3 GBIC, I think we
can look at the tx
level of max 6db to min 0db. If the one tx 0db, certainly rx will below
0db. If the other tx
6db, 50m fiber is not enough to cause 6db loss, so interface is still
down and GBIC may be
damaged.

9/125um SM 1000Base-ZX SC
6 tx max
0 tx min
0 rx max
-23 rx min
 70 km 42 mile
1000Base-ZX can reach up to 100km (60mi) by using dispersion shifted SM
or low
attenuation SM

Re: Network Performance testing equipments [7:10962]

2001-07-04 Thread NY50TT

I hate network performance testing because it's so ellusive in it's typical
moving target nature and different interpretations that can be derived
from the data you do collect.

Nevertheless, network performance analysis depends on baselining and
analysis of historical data, which means you need two components, data
collection equipment and data analysis equipment.

You will also need a sedative and a confortable chair as you decipher the
data you do collect to keep from going insane.

For data collection I recomend net scout products. You can get these at
www.netscout.com.

I would also recommend distributed sniffers for those moments when you need
an immediate snap shot of activity to put out fires.

For analysis, I recommend the net scout software, but also a good sniffer
software package, and a back-end database like SQL or Oracle. Having
extensive knowledge of protocols, frames, and all layers of network
operations is a must.

Most of all I reccomend: THINK, just because a book will tell you that a
certain condition means you have a problem means that thier explanation is
actually the problem. It might be that the application you are using is
actually using short bursty traffic as opposed to long persistent traffic,
and your clog is really being caused by an unstable network being burdend by
spanning tree or routing convergence. In practice, never ever, isolate on
the traffic that isn't performing correctly and expect to get an answer, you
have to analyize the entire make up of the traffic, including routing
protocol updates, BPDU's, etc.

I personally hate network performance problems because they can be so
elusive, and sometimes there is no single problem that is causing the issue,
and sometimes, fixing one thing, only adds bandwidth to make another
unidentified problem worse, so management think's you are green and don't
know what you are doing.

It's alot like the highway system, traffic, good or bad, will always expand
to fit into the pipe it's given, your management needs to understand that
from the outset, or you are in for a long process of explanations as to why
you are not doing your job.

Good luck.

Hi, all:

Does anyone knows what happens to Cisco Online Testing Web Site? I Try to
access it at

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/front.x/wwtraining/colt/ColtLogin.pl

But it returns the following:

You cannot access an assessment directly. In order to access an
assessment you have to proceed via a link to the assessment. These links
appear onsites like PEC, FELC, Cisco Rewards.
  Can not Take Test.

Anyone knows where can I find it now?

Testing an ISDN NT1 Device [7:10358]

2001-06-28 Thread Swart Douwe

I am trying to confirm the number of a NT1 device so that I can configure an
ISDN dial up to this device.

Should you be able to call this device with a standard phone and hear a ring
tone?

Is there any other way you can test the device without getting the phone
company involved?

Thanks

not to sure if this will help,

but i use a tool call solarwindsin it it has a tool call bandwidth
monitor...

aslong as the device has SNMP turned on it will tell you the overall
bandwidth bieng used...Realtime

as to finding out if your let`s say 256k cir is actually a 256k cir ...the
only way i know of finding this out is by pushing the link to its fullist...

you could interogate the CSU/DSU and do a show controllers

apart from that you could possible buy Net-sys toll analysis

Will the snmp gathering only give you the packet status and the
configuration that you put into the interface configuration?

What I am trying to gather is whether the bandwidth that we think we have
is
actually what we have available to us?

Will the snmp gathering allow us to do this

Splitting a BRI for lab testing [7:1604]

2001-04-23 Thread Medley, Tim

I've read on the list about using 1 BRI and splitting the B Channels to use
a router with each B channel in a lab situation.

How is this done? I imagine I need to split the B channels at a physical
level.

Can anyone explain how to do this.

thanks,

Re: Splitting a BRI for lab testing [7:1604]

2001-04-23 Thread Jason J. Roysdon

No cheap way around it, it will require an ISDN Simulator (hardware device
that simulates 2+ ISDN lines, depending on model). ~US$1-2K depending on
what features you want. Cisco ISDN CIM's (software programs simulating
routers and ISDN configurations) run a lot less (US$150)and may be more
appropriate. If you can get a few people to go in on an ISDN Simulator, I'd
say it's the way to go, but otherwise it's a very costly investment to a
personal lab. Another idea is to get two ISDN lines installed, but
unfortunately for my area that's US$150/install (or was two years ago when I
used to have it) and US$35/month/line + usage... at least with an ISDN
Simulator you can resell it when you're done and get most of your investment
back.

We've a few dozen lines at my office, and when I was prepping for my Routing
test at night I would just go in and hijack a pair to test with *evil grin*.
The worst part is it meant physically going to the office, but it was cheap.

A couple of years ago, I had a consulting client that INSISTED on
reliable Internet connectivity. So, we implemented dual BGP routers,
one to ATT and one to a local provider, and made sure the ATT links
 were provisioned over dual SONET.

I had done most of this design offsite. When I finally visited the
computer room, I discovered one server. When, rather shocked, I
asked what happened if the server failed, I was told they had a tape
backup. When I continued probing, and asked to what server they
would restore the tape backup, shocked looks broke out.

Incidentally, tape backup, for large transaction processing systems,
is increasingly being regarded as a secondary or legacy method.
Given the decreasing cost of mirrored disks, and the increasing
amount of time it takes to restore from a (serial) tape backup, the
restoral time with tape backup alone is unacceptable. What is
increasingly comon is to implement the database either with a doubly
or (preferably) triply redundant RAID server, or across backup
 datacenters.

In the event of failure, the database fails over to a backup disk
system. With triple redundancy, that still gives you a backup while
maintenance is performed on the failed server. Tape is reasonable
for restoring the failed system once it has been repaired. After
repair, the previously failed system usually becomes a backup, rather
than taking over from the current primary server.

I have to share the variant experience at one of the founding
institutions in networking. They carefully analyzed power-consuming
resources, and assigned the least critical to utility power only, the
next most critical to backup with the campus diesel, and the most
critical on UPS. The UPS was equipped with extensive power
management consoles so even finer distinctions could be made when
power was short. As a critical resource, the UPS controller was
locked in a secure room, with an electronic lock.

When the first major power failure hit, they discovered that the
electrical power for said electronic lock had no backup whatsoever.
And guess how the lock reacted to failures? Being unlocked, of

Luckily, said institution had a tradition of lockpicking skill.

testing dial backup...

2001-02-25 Thread jenny . mcleod

I use floating statics to test backup non-disruptively, but then I use
floating statics to initiate the backup as well, so I'm not sure whether
this technique will work if you're using the dial backup command to
initiate your backup. But for what it's worth...

Choose a network address that is not known in your network (and that your
users don't need access to for the period of the test, because this test
will disrupt access to this). This will obviously depend on your
particular network. You could make it a host address if you want.
Create a floating static route to that network, pointing to your backup
interface (dialer interface or whatever you're using).
E.g. ip route x.y.z.0 255.255.255.0 dialer1 250
Make sure that ping traffic to that network is classified as interesting
traffic for your backup interface.
Ping an address on that network.
The ping will fail, because (presumably) the router at the other end
doesn't know where to send the ping, but it should raise your backup link.
Remove the static route after testing.

This is not a complete test. It does test physical connectivity (in my
experience, the main problem with backup links is a telco problem that
isn't picked up because the link is never used), but it doesn't test
correct routing.

Be aware that depending on your exact setup, this may be disruptive. For
example, if for some reason traffic prefers the backup link once it's up,
you could have unexpected traffic flows. If you redistribute static routes
into a routing protocol on that router, (false) knowledge of your 'test'
network may suddenly appear all over the place.

Use with caution and knowledge of *your* network, and don't blame me if you
break something :-)

Re: testing dial backup...

2001-02-22 Thread Erick B.

Some suggestions.

Make sure the ISDN link works first by not placing
backup interface commands in the config. Just ping the
remote dialer interface IP and see if it is succesful.
If its not theres a config issue. Once you know the
dialer connection works then place the backup
interface command on one side only. If you place it on
both sides then the receiving side will be in standby
mode and not accept a call.

ISDN testing question

2001-02-08 Thread Hans Stout

Hello colleagues,

I have a question regarding how to test an ISDN connection for a dialer
interface that is mapped to a loopback interface. I am used to dialer map
statements where I can ping the IP address that the dialer is mapped to, and
that brings up the ISDN link. The interface I want to test now does not have
dialer map statements, but looks like this:

interface Dialer102
description IDSN Callback ID - Cologne, Germany
ip unnumbered Loopback1
encapsulation ppp
no ip route-cache
ip ospf cost 1500
no ip mroute-cache
dialer pool 1
dialer remote-name Router-Cologne
dialer idle-timeout 300
dialer string 0031302341498
dialer string 0031302882561
dialer string 0031302893245
dialer string 0031302883823
dialer caller 31302883823 callback
dialer caller 31302893245 callback
dialer caller 31302882561 callback
dialer caller 31302341498 callback
dialer load-threshold 64 either
dialer-group 1
no fair-queue
pulse-time 0
no cdp enable
ppp authentication chap callin
ppp chap hostname HUB-ROUTER
ppp multilink

Is there a way to test if the ISDN works without bringing down the serial
line ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,

Hans

Make one interface dte and the other one dce and then put clocking on the
dce side .
Also check ur encapsulations is the same on both sides .
And check the physical interfaces are up .

Conf t
Int serial 0/0
Encap hdlc
Interface-type [dte|dce] not too sure about this one
Clock rate 64000

I cant vouch this 100% right but it will put you on the right track .

Re: Back-to-Back testing

2000-12-11 Thread Craig Columbus

You'll need to make a back-to-back cable first. Pins 12 cross to pins
45. Config as you would for a true WAN, except have one router clock
internal and one router clock line.

I found out when I went to reschedule my exam. I guess no one was going to

Title: RE: repost: Cisco Testing online

They do record your scores, but they don't get reported to anywhere except your email address. You can take the tests multiple times. There may be a limit but I haven't seen that info posted anywhere.

As for free, yes, it is free if you have an account. If you don't have an account, You can get a CCO account by signing up for the Consultant's program, which is free, by following the link here:

Good luck!

RE: Cisco online testing

2000-10-12 Thread Carl Mirsky

No. You do get feedback as to which questions you got wrong, and what topic
it is covered in, but if you feel that the answer that they show as being
correct is not, you will need to verify it yourself. I would like to make
another note. After reviewing the Cisco whitepapers that I downloaded to
help me study for these exams, I noticed that there were even more questions
on the actual exams that the answers to them came directly from the Cisco
Documents (imagine that). I would recommend that while studying for the
exams, anyone who REALLY wants to know the material should get as much
information as possible directly from the Cisco Documentation, in addition
to any other study materials that you may have. Remember the end goal is
NOT just to pass the exams, but to know the material. In every technical
interview that I have had, no one has ever asked me what score I received on
an exam. They dug down deep into my knowledge to see what I actually know,
which is miniscule to what most of you have :-) .

Carl.
