yes, this is possible. I would like to wait till the 3.1.1 is release
and then we can start updating Pootle more frequently. Would once a
month be ok?

I think so, but may be others can give their opinion too

yes, sure! Go ahead if you have other preferences.

Ok. I'll let you know.

- Have you made other attempts to extract files from the wiki and

The wiki content can be extracted and uploaded to Pootle. We worked
to get another machine to set up another Pootle dedicated to the wiki
doc localization. Now, with Aijin's great support we have a Pootle
server set up. http://pootle3.sunvirtuallab.com/ There is some
content in the Basic Guide project but I am not happy the way the
content is displayed.

Thanks to Aijin too so, it looks very interesting :) and yes, I just
have a quick look, it seems that Pootle does not like wiki templates
or links used in the page.
BTW: Friedel is providing a patch to Aijin for this next week. So it
seems we are doing good progress :-) .

[l10n-dev] OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 - delivery deadline for l10n bug fixes - June 12th, 2009

2009-06-04 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Dear All,

this is a reminder that the OOo 3.1.1 is approaching and in case you
have some important l10n fixes that you would like to see fixed in the
3.1.1 micro release, you have the possibility to submit them by June
12th http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease311.

Pootle users need to carry out the fixes in Pootle. Aijin will submit
diff files containing the fixes to release engineering on June 12th.

For all others, please follow the instructions below:

* provide sdf diff files that contain only the fixed strings (please
remove non translated strings or strings which have not been modified
since 3.1 release from the sdf file)

 * the sdf file should be intact containing both the corrected
translated strings and the corresponding en-US source strings. Remove
untranslated or unchanged strings from the sdf file. Please note that
the en-US strings have to be the same milestone like your translation.

   * please make sure that the GSI / SDF file format is not violated
(format errors like wrong amount of tabs, shifted columns, ... ) by
using "gsicheck". Please use the latest version at:
http://ooo.services.openoffice.org/gsicheck/ usage: gsicheck -c
myfile.sdf. In case of errors please use the log file to fix them.

   * file an issuezilla bug to "v...@openoffice.org", assign the issue to
"v...@openoffice.org", Target milestone to "OOo 3.1.1" , Component "l10n"
, Subcomponent "code" , Issue type "ENHANCEMENT". Please don't attach
your file directly to the issue, but provide an URL / link pointing to
your file. Please do attach only if you don't have any other web space
available (http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/project_issues.html)

2009-05-05 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi Sophie,

I've asked during the RE meeting today if we are allowed to provide
important fixes on UI (mostly Calc functions) through a .sdf file on IZ
for 3.1.1 and it has been accepted :)

great news.

Rafaella, how do you want we organize the .sdf collection?

All changes done in Pootle will be delivered via issue. All Pootle users
will need to make sure the critical issues are fixed by the deadline
(which I suppose will need to be set in the next days).
All other localizers will need to deliver the major fixes as .sdf file
to Vladimir or Ivo as usual via issue.

Once we have the l10n deadline for GUI fixes on the roadmap we can work
on an l10n plan.

Currently, we are looking into the possibility to set up a documentation

Taka, Tora,

at that time the Developer's Guide was not open sourced and was authored
in another file format. Now, it is in MediaWiki and when changing the
format it#s very difficult to get any good results with TM leverage from
previous versions. This is at least what I saw when we translated the
Admin and the Basic Guide. If you want I could process the Developer's
Guide with our internal Tools by using previous TMs as well as the TMs

Re: [l10n-dev] Needs and restrictions for provideing full install sets

2009-04-15 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi Andre,

really thank you for initiating this thread to gather the requirements.
Please see my commetns below:

Hi,

(please send replys to d...@l10n only)

within the last days, we had a discussion the request for providing more
ful installation packages.

The need was raised by the serbian team [1] but is valid for almost all
languages. Rafaella did forward the request to the OOo Community Council
[2].

For the Council (and I think for all of us) it's important to understand
the real needs ("we need all the builds on all platforms in all
languages" is no good answer to this ;) ) and the problems we have. So
I'd ask you to answer these questions (at least those of you who can
provide good input).

- What are the requirements of the native lang teams?
E.g. do we really need full installation sets on each platform (even
several installation sets for some platforms). Do we need all the
packages at the same time? Do we need the files on the mirror network
... (these are just some items that come tomy mind).
I think that the requirements should be defined based on the purpose. I
can identify 3 major milestones:
- l10n testing: this usually happens after the translated files are
delivered to verify the quality of the product form the l10n perspective
before the translations get integrated into the master. For this
purpose, CWS builds are used
- Verification of translation progress and l10n testing: some teams
would like to see their translation efforts before the translation is
100% completed. For this purpose, I would recommend to use developer builds
- Releasing localized builds: in order to release the builds, the
language teams need to approve a RC build. For this purpose full
installation sets are needed.

- What are the restrictions we have to face?
Restricted resources for distribution were mentioned - I'd lik to see
concrete numbers here. Esp. the question if these limited resources are
under our control or not is important.
Problems with limited build resources were also mentioned - I hope,
someone can provide details.

I asked some people to (temporarly) join this list, so we hopefully have
all people here to discuss the topic. And I hope, we can get to a
compromise how to improve the situation afterwards.

Best,

André

Proposal of translating Openoffice to Oromo Language

This proposal is about creating NLC project for Oromo Language. It addresses
3 isues.About the target language, the project goal, and Our team.

 The target language

Oromo Language(called Afaan Oromoo by the native speakers) is the first most
spoken language in Ehiopia(more than 50%) and the horn of africa.Within Africa,
it is
the language with the fourth most speakers(more than 40 million), after
Arabic, Swahili, Hausa. In addition to Ethiopia, it is spoken in Kenya,
Somalia, Djibuti, Tanzania and many countries in the rest of the world. It is
written with modified latin alphabet called Qubee.

Although spoken widely, this language is used by people who live in the

poor part of the world(daily income of less than $2 per person). So the
translation of Openoffice to this language is very significant for this
people.

   The Project Goal
   Our team

needs the openoffice Writer to be translated to Afaan Oromoo, Inside
the Native Language Confederation. We wish to register a level two
project. We have also already established a team of contributors for
this project.

   The team

The Project initiators are from Ethiopia. All team members use Oromo Language
as
their first language. Our team comprizes:Dawit ..(the cordinator of
this project) - Bsc. degree in Linguistics and Litrature. Has done lots
of thesis on Afaan Oromoo. He is committed to act as a responsible
entrepreneur and inspired many Afaan Oromo speaking people to
participate in this project. Belayneh Melka, Bsc. degree in Electrical
Engineering. Has developed some Applications and Database Systems in Afaan
Oromoo. In addtion, some students and teachers of Addis Ababa University
Department of Oromo Language will participate on this project.

0% committed, about 16% in local SVN repository.
UI is at 100% so installation is fully localized.

Not providing localized installation sets will require from users to
install software on English before applying language packs or to use our
custom build version without all features.

Now there is enough space on bouncer mirrors I don't see why we can't
make install sets for every language with UI > 80%.

We can provide space for hosting a mirror if necessary.

I perfectly agree that the current situation is not satisfactory at all.
As for the space issue, I've sent out a message to the Council to

[l10n-dev] Developers, Basic and Administration Guides

2009-04-03 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Dear All,

based on a request from the Japanese team :-) , I am writing you some
information about the Developer's, Basic and Administration Guides.

They are available at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Administration_Guide
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/BASIC_Guide
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/DevGuide/OpenOffice.org_Developers_Guide

Whereas the Developer's Guide is available in Simplified Chinese (great
work from the Chinese Team!), The Admin and Basic Guide are available in
Simplified Chinese, Japanese and French.
The Japanese Team has asked if they could start reviewing the Basic
Guide and what would be the best procedure.

I am opening the relative information to you all, so that in
case of interest you can follow up and contribute to the discussion.

For the above guides if you wish you can contribute to linguistic
review, content review and to update the content to reflect the latest
updates.
There is no translation work going on and - as I have been told - there
have been a few changes in the Admin Guide. In case of interest, what you need to do is to
talk to your native-language team to make sure to coordinate the work
with the other team members.

In case some team would like to start translating one of the guide the
basics are:

1. Let the doc community know that a translation is starting -
especially if it's a new language being translated to.
2. Follow the wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/XX/Documentation/
structure when creating new translated pages of the English original
content. If translating TO English from another source language, we
will have to manage that separately.
3. Add the IntraWiki links for translated pages - this process can be
handled/explained when a new translation is announced.
4. The associated templates will need to be translated along with the
main document text (particularly any TOC templates - the Master TOC
template is translated once per language and the book specific template
is translated per book).

Other than that, you should be able to do the translations in whatever
process you prefer... as long as the pages posted back to the Wiki
match the structure of the English one for consistency.

If any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

I believe that the link translation is supported, in that sense that if

Hi Rafaella,

I asked this several times already but nobody gave me an answer.
How should I prepare SDF diff files? What should be included?

The sdf file should include the English source and target string which
has been modified. The format of the sdf files should not be changed.

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Translation_for_3.1#How_to_deliver_translated_files

What is the meaning of number in column 6 of SDF file and should I
ignore it while preparing diff?

Please do not modify the number of the columns. To make sure the foramt
is not corrupt, please run gsicke and fix possible errors before delivering.

Is there some tool that can generate clean diff out of two full SDF
files?

Ivo, Aijin: any recommendation?

Hi Sophie,

On 02/28/09 13:29, sophie wrote:

Hi Rafaella, Ivo, all

I would like to know how the integration of our changes on Pootle will
be done. Just to understand and try to figure if we could have a better
process.

The integration of translated files is the same no matter if
translations are carried out in Pootle or in SDF files directly. As you
know we deliver the translations to release engineerings accoring to the
release map and translation schedule (taking into account possible
changes to the schedule which are discussed in the release meetings).

Last time for the 3.0 changes I've done in time in the cws for the UI
were not integrated, see this issues for example:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=91864
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=91863
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=91847

As far as I can see in the above issues, the changes have been carries
out in Pootle, but has Ivo or Vladimir got the strings with the changes?
As far as I can see they did not get notified.
That means that after the translation delivery deadline has passed and
you want to provide some additional fixes, the changes have to be be
integrated in the CWS. How:
submit an issue (as you did) and assign it to Aijin, and cc: fma, vg and
ihi asking to have the fixes integrated.

And I've to wait since August 08 to see the correction in March or April
09...

So what would be the best for the l10n teams to make sure the

corrections are integrated and for the integration team to have less
hurdle and missing risks, considering the short time and the emergency
of our fixes:

- work only on a clean .sdf file (the complete one we have on the issue
is not clean as some corrections have been integrated after gsicheck)
and provide the corrections via a .sdf containing the corrections only

- work only on Pootle (but as seen above some corrections are left
apart) so there is may be an integration issue to solve here

- work on .po files provided through an issue (we did that at the very
begining if I remember well

- ?

Currently the process I use is to correct first the .po files, then
upload them in Pootle, then correct the .sdf file, then create a new
.sdf file, not to mention that I've not yet filled issues to track the
changes and see if they are fixed in the master. It's a lot of
duplicated work and I'm sure that we can enhance that way of work for
all teams implied in the process.

Yes, sure. The current process is far from perfect and I'm thankful for
any idea that can help us simplifying it :-)

Just 3 ideas that come into my mind are:

1) the sdf file that needs to be corrected is the sdf file which results
out of the gsi check. In order not to have to fix those errors both in
pootle and in the sdf, I would encourage all teams to use the
verification checks in Pootle. And I am sure that we can ask to
customize these checks...
Advantage: by using sdf verification checks in Pootle, translators would
avoid to fix gsi check errors in sdf files.
2) from now on we will be delivering to release engineering diffs files
only via web interface. That means that the verification of translation
integration both in case of major handoffs or later l10n fixes could be
done by using these diffs without the need of submitting lots of l10n
issues.
Advantage: sdf diff files can be used to check if latest translations or
corrections have been delivered and integrated on CWS correctly.
3) l10n fixes will be delivered by the l10n fixes deadline without prior
request to release engineering
Advantage: no additional request/issue need to be submitted to deliver
l10n fixes. However, please not that anything after the last l10n fixes
delivery will not be included and that for anything that needs our
attention an issue still needs to be submitted.

Would the 3 above points help reducing duplication?

Thanks,
Rafaella

#99313: localization35: "sh" Installation Preparation is not localized
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99313

Serbian Latin (sh) Installation Preparation is not localized in cws
localization35 but translation is present in integrated SDF. Native

OpenOffice.org MSI installer is localized.

#99316: localization35: Serbian (sr and sh) unistallation wrong codepage
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=99316

Serbian Cyrillic (sr) and Serbian Latin (sh) unistallations uses wrong
codepage and text is not readable. As unistall can finish without user
input, and most users won't see it anyway ;) I don't see this one as
blocker but it will be nice if we can solve it in the future.

thank you for reporting the above issues.

Question: Where should I mark these localization35 cws builds as
APPROVED after doing Sanity check? I can not find them in QATrack.

In QA Track you should approve Release Candidate builds after sanity
check. As for l10n builds it's important to provide feedback and to tell
us simply GO that we can go ahead.

Rafaella

This would be wasting of community resources, i.e. if all language
teams checked the whole UI.

I fully agree that this is not the right approach.
I think there should be an extra checking step after integration:
extract SDF file from the sources and compare to the one that has been
delivered. I'll probably do this for Hungarian, but it would be
better, if it could be done by engineers, because they could fix right
away, if there were differences.
Actually, if there are differences between the sdf files you delivered
and the one you extract out of the l10n CWS35, it means - to me - that
the merge or integration process has not worked correctly and that the
merge/integration issues should be fixed by release engineering.

Re: [l10n-dev] Entire Vietnamese translation cross review

Hi Nguyen Vu Hung,

Hello all,

12 of our Vietnamese team members will do a cross review against
the entire Vietnamese translation which is available on pootle.

The target is 3.1 so we have one month until the deadline.

Not really. The last date for l10n fixes is actually February 26th. What
you can fix by then will be integrated into the 3.1 release - which is
the content that is available on Pootle. All other improvements will be
for 3.2.
The review process is a very long task ... so the earlier you start the
better :-) .

There are many ways of approaching review. So depending on the time and
resources you have at your disposal you may want to review in one way or
the other. Of course it also depends on the current language quality of
the translation.

Going through one strings after the other in Pootle may be very good
from the translation perspective, but it is very time consuming
If I may suggest something I would first of all review the GUI and
define the GUI terminology. Once the GUI terminology is well defined, I
would go and fix it first in the GUI and then in the Help.

How can this be done?
With the testtool there is the possibility of automatically creating
screen shots of all GUI dialogs. Once the screen shots are generated,
you/your team can start reviewing them. What needs to be changed should
then be reported in table in a wiki. Once you/the team agrees on the
changes and on the terminology, you can then go ahead and carry out the
changes in Pootle.
IMHO, the advantage of starting with this approach is that you fix the
errors in the context and to fix the major issues that a user would see
at first. Also you get screeshots of dialogs which you would not usually
sere if you are not familiar which a particular OOo function.

Just let me know if this approach would work for you.

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

changes in the Readme are very difficult to plan. They come in very

In the Release Map for 3.1, I made sure to clearly have a deadline for
last l10n bug fixes delivery: February 26th, 2009.
This is the door I wanted to have opened for l10n fixes which may come

Re: [l10n-dev] SCA - Sun Contributor Agreement

2009-01-29 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi Sophie,

thank you for the clarifications, please see my comments below:

From what I remember of the SCA discussions, it is now mandatory for all
the l10n contributors. But I thought only for translators, not for
reviewers.

It really depends on what the reviewer exactly does.. If the revier only
provided feedabck on does not change anything in the files
himself/herself, he/she is only recommended to submit the SCA. If a
reviewer does carry out terminology changes, makes corrections to the
files, I see his/her work not very different from a translator who
contributes back to the code.

See point 3 of the FAQ
-
   3. Do I have to fill out a SCA?

Yes, if you intend to contribute source code or other materials
which are intended to be compiled or otherwise integrated with the
OpenOffice.org product, regardless of the size of the contribution
(e.g., including contributions of 10 lines or less). However we
encourage all contributors to the OpenOffice.org website domain,
including the wiki, to fill out the SCA, as it streamlines the process
for all.
--

So now, only documentation and extensions (may be also templates) are
not covered by the SCA.

In OOo terminology this is "UI and Feature freeze". If new strings need to be

I can only once agian ask the l10n project leads to request clarification about

done in the relea...@openoffice.org list.

One more doubt I had was, can the translators or language maintainers
submit their translations till "last l10n bug fixes delivery: February 26th,
2009"? OR is the date "translation delivery deadline: February 2nd, 2009"
fixed till when translators can submit translations?

Feb. 2nd is the date for regular translation submission. Feb 26th should only
be used for very urgend l10n/translation bugfixes that would be considered as
showstopper.

exactly. Translations should be delivered on February 2nd. February 26th
is really to be targeted for critical issues only.

Hi,

First, Good year and good health for everyone !

My question :
We have translated 80% of OpenOffice.org (OO.o PO UI).

This is really great news! This is really a very important step.

We should like to know if it is possible to test this translation with
an OpenOffice.org beta for lengadocian. If yes, where can we have
some informations to begin this process.
You can find detailed information on the current translation schedule
at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Translation_for_3.1#Translation_Schedule_for_Pootle_Users
You can continue to work on files till February 2nd. After that l10n CWS
builds will be created with all content translated so far as reported
at: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease31

TCM testing is planned on February 10-26th
Last l10n fixes should be delivered by February 26th
And in order to make sure the Occitan-Lengadocian OpenOffice.org version
is distributed over the OOo you'll need to perform a couple of more steps:

1) run sanity check on RC l10n builds
2) update the test status on QATrack
3) set the status as APPROVED in qatrack
4) get an approved build distributed to the mirror network

2008-12-22 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Hi All,

first of all, really thank you for your prompt feedback and for your ideas!

I would like to give you a short update on this issue.

- move the label strings to an extension project does not seem to be a
solution since the extension will need to be bundled to the office anyway.
- we are looking into a way to include non-[en-US} strings in in
xcu-files http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=96791
- since it will still take some time to provide a fix to this issue, as
an interim solution, with the m38 we are setting the labels back as not
to translate - to avoid that teams waste time in translating these
strings while the final solution is still not in place.

For all Pootle users: we will be removing the
http://www.sunvirtuallab.com:32300/it/openoffice_org/officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office.po
file from Pootle. We will back up this file with all the translations
done so far for this file, so that once the solution is in place and for
your language you want to provide localization for this file
translations done previously can be restored.

[l10n-dev] Re: [qa-dev] IRC Meeting on Quality assurance of l10n builds

2008-12-17 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Dear All,

first of all, really thank you for attending yesterday's meeting,
especially to those who attended at really challenging times!

For the fast readers, here some highlights:

- 3 test cases which were added (recently?) to the Sanity Check Scenario
in TCM will be removed.
- there are many open questions on how to set up and work with the
TestTool environment. A specific wiki should capture those Q&A.
- the process how to release and distribute OpenOffice.org localized
versions is still not clear to all the N-L teams
- quaste (http://quaste.services.openoffice.org/) is still unknown to
most of the teams.

next Meeting is scheduled on January 13th, 2009

You can read the complete log at:

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

[l10n-dev] Re: [l10n-tools] How to translate Accelerator-keys in Office.po on Pootle

Hi Dirk,

On 12/15/08 12:43, Dick Groskamp wrote:
Would like to know how the Accelerator-keys in Office.po are to be

Source (for instance) is: .uno:SelectAll

Translation could be:

A .unoAllesselecteren
B Alles selecteren
C .unoAlles selecteren

I'm in the dark about the visible use of these keys and, if done
wrong, would it break functionality ?

If the source is to be used as the visible use of the key I would
translate this example as: Alles selecteren.
Since I'm not sure if that breaks functionality since it is a
Command.value I would like someone to shine some light on this.

So, please enlighten me
Generally, if the string you are translating is not a menu entry or a
button, you can leave it out since a script will automatically assign
the accelerator to the letters available in the dialogs avoiding double
mnemonics as much as possible.

You can find more detailed information on this topic at:

these labels will remain in German in the source because these are
proper names. It seems that most teams would like to move the Labels.xcu
into an extension which I think is a very good idea because it gives the
flexibility to localize the labels or not -
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=96791

Which milestone will be ready for translation ?
Well, you can start updating your translation using m37 especially if
you wan to translate the Help because all changes for 3.1 have already
been integrated. If you don't want to localize the labels (in the UI),
just ignore the Labels.xcu. Since feature freeze is scheduled for
December 18th, it's only between January 5th and 8th that we will have a
better idea on which will be the milestone to use to complete
translation for 3.1.
Our team still uses the en-US.sdf file as a translation base and we
don't plan to switch to pootle in the near term,
That's fine. Whatever for you and your team works best. And if you want
to test the tool just let us know.

Thanks,
Rafaella

with issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=96791 a
number of strings which mainly include German *product names* in the
source have been introduced as to be translated. Honestly, I don't think
that it make much sense to consider this file as to be translated, but
this is my opinion and would like your help to look into this issue and
find a solution.

Option 1)
close this issue and set the file as not to translate

Option 2)
translate and maintain the translation of the product names in all
languages going forward.

Please start voting on one of the above options or ... provide
additional feedback that may help coming to a solution.

It seems that the texts are names of products delivered by Avery.
Brand "Avery" seems to list products available in the U.S.
Brand "Avery Zweckform" seems to list ones available in Germany.

Do we really need to translate them?

If you want to have them in your language in the UI you need to
translate them and labels are often used by companies.
But what is incorrect is to have German strings as source for our
translation. I don't know who has approved this but it's a mistake for me.
