I understand people thinking it is too late to make a change but I also
think Jörg has made an excellent point. I see the purpose of the side
bar as allowing one to work faster by gathering many common functions. I
haven't been able to think of a name I like that communicates the speed
aspect. Perhaps Favorites Bar, with its allusion to a browser feature,
might incline people to try the new tool.

Hi! It might be easier to get support from the user forum (
http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/). Please describe further what
happens when you try to open a file and what operating system you are
using.
I have seen such problems caused by a hung OpenOffice process. The easiest
fix, not knowing your level of expertise, is to shutdown the computer and
restart it.

Hello!! One possible solution - you can hold the shift key while rotating
to limit the movement to 15 degree increments. Also, you can probably get
better support for user questions on the user mailing list or the user

Hello Marco,
I downloaded your document and I see two lines in blue and 13 lines in
red, the remainder are black. Is that right? I am using version 4.0.

For the signature problem on the forum, you might try saying you use
version 3.4.1. I have reported the problem but I'm not sure how long it
will take to fix if it is indeed a general problem.

Finally, there is a tutorial on the forum about fixing spell check
problems. You do not have to be registered to view it. The link is

I suggest they try resetting the user profile as explained in the

Re: AOO questions on Google

2012-12-23 Thread F C. Costero
Since there is some interest in this particular topic, here are the 9
questions I categorized as MS Interoperability with the number of positive
votes appended to each in parentheses.
1. I tryed to save my word processor file as a MS Word file only
extensions listed in the drop down were for text or Open Office, no Word
option. Help function said I should have had that option in the drop down
under save as. version 3.4.1.
Could you add a converter for format MS .docx as the actual converter for
.doc does not work proper. It mix up text and drawings and make the whole
page a mess. (1)

2. hello,
How can i open openoffice file with microsoft office?
Gr Sam Esman (5)

3. What kind of OOXML support is intended in AOO?
Transitional (MS Word) version or ISO (does someone really implement it?).
(3)

4. If save filter is implemented, don't you fear a weakening of the ODF
then? (6)

5. allow open office to use ms office defaults (5)

6. can i install openoffice when i have microsoft office on my computer (4)

7. OpenOffice, should be able to open properly all 'Word office' files. (9)

8. Is open office compatible with Office 2010? (8)

9. Open Office doesn't handle tables in Word well - for example re-sizing
of columns, keeping table rows together, inserting page breaks within
tables. Could OO development include a goal of fully matching MS Office
functionality for tables? (13)

Highly interesting *and* entertaining!

Thanks! In the draft you ask for the screenshots showing enhancements: I
think it's the same page by Shenfeng Liu we've already shared here,
http://wiki.openoffice.org/**wiki/Documentation/Fidelity_**
Improvement_Since_AOO341
(they are not all from Symphony, but the majority are, including all
"OOXML Support" enhancements).

Can the long bullet list be prioritized in some ways? Not all the list,
but at least making sure that the first few items are the most relevant. I
would put issues containing "crash" first, but maybe someone who has better
knowledge of the impact can suggest other issues worth to be listed at the
top.

Yes, it would be good to give category headings for this list. I
understand the jsutification for length -- what, really, is being
incorporated from Symphony, but if length is an issue, maybe drop some.

OK. Look now. I re-ordered the bugs a little to put some of the more
interesting ones first. I also added a header. Since an article is
coming out in a couple of days on Lwn.net claiming that we have done
absolutely nothing with the Symphony code, there is value in giving
the full list. We should leave no doubt that work in this area has
been ongoing. While some were working on the more publicly visible
AOO 3.4.1 work on a branch, a lot was happening in the trunk. We
haven't really spoken about that work before. Now is a good time.

The title "Allegro non troppo" is a clever pun! The expression is clearly
recognizable as international musical jargon and a pun on Symphony, but the
usual meaning of "allegro" in Italian is "happy" which adds an interesting
twist...

Minor typo just before the bullet list: "the fix fro Symphony".

Regards,
   Andrea.

Finally, although I realize that most blog readers will be non-technical, I
think it might be valuable to at least broach the subject of SGA vs
licensing here in some way. Even if a few sentences could be added under:

"IBM Lotus Symphony is a commercial derivative of OpenOffice which IBM
enhanced for their
customer and corporate use.Last May IBM contributed the source code for
Symphony to Apache, via a Software Grant Agreement (SGA). "

to address this it would be great. What does it mean to contribute code and
"use" it piecemeal vs re-licensing it , for example.

I added some additional text to explain what an SGA is. I also
corrected the typo that Andrea pointed out and add the link to the
"before& after" screen shots that he posted.

So I'm happy to make further changes or content additions. But I'm
generally happy with.

This is a great blog! I'm sure our users and general audience will
appreciate it!

Rob,
Thanks for working on this, it is very well done. I noticed a couple
of typos in the third movement:

"A a modeless property picker" needs only one "A".
"So we're considering at several" drop the "at"
"and we're bring those into OpenOffice. " should be "and we're bringing
those into OpenOffice".
I'm also not sure "modeless" will be meaningful to regular users. Would
"continuously available" be better?

The line

Should be
"Those with access (and this may have geo-based access restrictions) can

Hello Jerry,
If I understand you correctly, the equivalent actions in Calc are:
1. Highlight the cells you want to print. Select the menu Format -> Print
Ranges -> Define. Selecting File -> Page Preview will then show only the
selected cells.
2. Highlight the cells you want to move. Left click and hold the mouse
button down inside the selected range (not at the edge of the range as in
Excel) and drag to the new location.

I hope that helps.

Re: Reporting a problem with the OpenOffice website

I understand the problem to be that OpenOffice will not start on your
computer. If you are getting no error, this can happen because
an OpenOffice process is stuck. Not knowing what operating system you are
using, the simplest solution is probably to reboot your computer.

Re: Find and Replace Macro with regex captured groups in replace text

2014-01-01 Thread F C. Costero
The problem is the line
oFind.setString(FandR.ReplaceString)

The setString() method takes a string input and doesn't know anything about
the search done with oDoc.FindNext() or regular expressions. You can
perform a global replace that implements your regular expression with
oDoc.replaceAll(FandR)
I tried this for the string budh and got

budh 1P = b[guṇa udh]->b[a+udh]->bodh + a->bodha
which is not exactly what you expected.
I don't at the moment see how to do a local replace but I'm no expert in
such things.

Re: Which SQL commands support OpenOffice Base?

2014-04-23 Thread F C. Costero
Hello!
If you create a Base file using the menu File -> New -> Database -> Create
a New Database, you will get a Base file that runs HSQLDB version 1.8 as an
embedded database. The SQL documentation for that is here:
http://www.hsqldb.org/doc/1.8/guide/ch09.html. I would not recommend using
the embedded mode for critical work because of the possibility of data
loss. The data loss is not due to instability of HSQLDB but to the nature
of the embedded mode.
If you create a Base file using the menu File -> New -> Database -> Connect
to an Existing Database, you can connect to an external database through
JDBC, ODBC or any of the other listed methods. This means you can connect
to any database engine of your choosing and use its version of SQL.
More detailed answers are best provided on the user mailing list or on the
forums at https://forum.openoffice.org/

Francis

We have some confusion here. The forum that is dead is not the official AOO
forum but the older unofficial forum at www.oooforum.org. As Hagar says, it
is not completely dead, in the sense that it can be reached sometimes with
sufficient patience, but all of the new posts are spam. I checked in mid
April and there was not a single non-spam post over the previous two weeks.
That situation seems to have continued.

Hello Roberta,
Yes. 4.1.0 is the latest version of Apache OpenOffice.
The 4.1.0 version should install in parallel to your 3.0 version. I
suggest keeping both versions active for a little while until you are sure
that 4.1.0 works well for you. There have been many improvements since 3.0
but it only takes one bug sometimes to cause a big problem.
The latest version can still save in the .doc format and its native
format is .odt.

Hi Steve,
The registration process is no longer active, so you can just ignore
that. A JRE is a Java Runtime Environment, which is available from
Java.com. It is needed to run a few of the features of OpenOffice. However,
if you haven't run into any other problems, you don't seem to need it. Your
older version of OpenOffice requires and old version of the JRE and I don't
recommend going through the trouble without a reason.
You should consider getting a more recent version of OpenOffice from
www.openoffice.org. That download process will redirect you to SourceForge
and the download will start automatically. There is no need to click on
anything at SourceForge.

Francis

Hi Darren,
Really, what is the probability that a spreadsheet program that has
roots going back 30 years can't add correctly? Could the program survive
with that kind of flaw? I understand that it isn't doing what you expect
and over at the user forum we would be happy to help straighten out the
problem. The fact that a formula works one way in Excel and another in Calc
is not evidence that either is wrong. For example, the two programs differ
in their willingness to silently convert text to numbers. This commonly
leads to Excel users being surprised by a calculation in Calc and, I
suppose, Calc users being surprised by Excel. Neither approach is "right";
each expresses a choice about balancing user convenience and the risk of
miscalculations. Your problem may be along those lines or may be totally
different. If you post an example on the forum, we can probably quickly
find the problem.

Hello Semen,
I find that the code below, a slight modification of yours, works for me.

oDoc = ThisComponent
oCursor = oDoc.Text.createTextCursor()
oTextObject = oDoc.CreateInstance("com.sun.star.text.TextEmbeddedObject")
oTextObject.SetPropertyValue("CLSID",
"12dcae26-281f-416f-a234-c3086127382e")
oTextObject.Name = "ChartID"

'Insert chart in document
oCursor.GetText().InsertTextContent(oCursor, oTextObject, False)

oDocChart = oTextObject.EmbeddedObject.Component
'The first approach inserting data like this:

oDocChart.Diagram = oDocChart.createInstance("com.sun.star.chart.XYDiagram")
oDocChart.Diagram.DataRowSource = com.sun.star.chart.ChartDataRowSource.ROWS

Dim aData(1, 2)
aData(0, 0) = 10
aData(0, 1) = 20
aData(0, 2) = 30
aData(1, 0) = 10
aData(1, 1) = 40
aData(1, 2) = 90

oDocChart.Data.Data = aData

oDocChart.DataSourceLabelsInFirstRow = False

I hope that helps.

Hello,
If you can post a small example document on the user forum (
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/index.php), we can take a look at why
you are not getting the expected result. Find & Replace in OpenOffice and
MS Office are not identical and you probably just have to change a setting.

At the bottom of the Writer window near the right corner there are three
small icons for controlling the page layout on the screen. The first is a
single page, the second is two pages side by side and the third is two
pages bound together. Click the first one and you should get the view that

That is to account for the actual year being slightly less than 365.25 days
and is the difference between the Gregorian calendar and the earlier Julian

I verified the Check for Updates in the Extension Manager on Windows 7 64
bit and it correctly flagged my downlevel extensions.
Clicking the Install button doesn't seem to do anything useful. A progress
window makes it look like a download is underway but afterwards I can't
find any extension files and restarting AOO shows that the old extensions
are still in place. Am I being stupid?

I haven't had any problem with the spell check in the latest version. I
suggest you reset your user profile. There is a tutorial on the English

I also did a quick check of the product symbol in Math and I didn't see any
problem. What font are you using for the formula. You can see that under
the menu Format -> Fonts when the formula editor is active.

Hi Patricia,
My fonts are set just as yours are but your odt file looks normal when I
open it, not at all like your bmp. When I click on the Pi in the formula
editor it is centered both vertically and horizontally in the dotted box.
That was all on Windows 7. I also looked at a similar formula in Linux and
had no problem. The fonts there are Liberation Serif, Liberation Sans and
DejaVu Sans Mono. If no one has a suggestion here in the next several
hours, I'll open a thread on the user forum to see if anyone there has an

Sorry I was unclear. I meant that you should rename (or delete) the user
folder that contains the profile. This will trigger the creation of a new
folder. OpenOffice has to be shut down to rename the folder.

 The formula

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. It should not be necessary to
reinstall OpenOffice. The Quickstarter is a feature of OpenOffice that
starts automatically when you start your computer so that launching
OpenOffice will appear to happen more quickly. Since it is running,
OpenOffice is still on your computer. What leads you to think that
OpenOffice has disappeared?

You do not say what operating system you are using, so I will guess it is
Windows. If you have a Windows Start button (typically at the lower left of
your screen), click that and select All Programs. Scroll down the list that
appears until you see a folder called OpenOffice 4.1.2. Click on that and
then click on the component of OpenOffice you want to start.

I hope that helps. A better place to get user support than this mailing
list is the user forum. The English forum is at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/index.php

Recovering from broken password (bug 125431)

2016-01-22 Thread F C. Costero
We get questions on the forum about how to access a document that no longer
accepts the encryption password. I assume some of these are due to the
broken NSS issue #125431. I skimmed through the comments on bugzilla and
did not see a definitive way to fix the problem. I"m sorry if I missed it.
What should we tell users to do if we conclude they have this problem?
Thank you!

Hello. Please take a look at this thread in the support forum. It should

Re: creating a spreadsheet (was: new cool feature)

2018-08-16 Thread F C. Costero
I changed the LOOKUP() function in columns D and E to be a VLOOKUP() with
the fourth parameter set to 0 so the function looks for an exact match. The
LOOKUP() function requires that the lookup vector be ordered. Since column
A of the Database sheet is not ordered, incorrect results were returned.
I fixed the formulas in column I to have the form
=H4-G4 + (G4 >H4)
This accounts for cases where the end time (H4) has a smaller clock value
(e.g. 07:00) than the start time (e.g. 19:00) but is in the next day. Times
are stored in units of days. The time 07:00 has the value 7/24 and the time
19:00 has the value 19/24. You were subtracting
7/24 - 19/24 = -12/24 = -0.5
If a cell is formatted as time, -0.5 is displayed as12:00, but the value is
still -0.5.
I appended
+ (G4 > H4)
which returns FALSE (equal to zero) when H4 is larger than or equal to G4.
When G4 is larger than H4, it returns TRUE (equal to one) that gives
H4-G4 + (G4 >H4) = 7/24 - 19/24 + (19/24 > 7/24) = -0.5 + (TRUE) = -0.5 + 1
= 0.5
The 0.5, when formatted as time, is 12:00 and it is the desired answer.
This is not a bug. All spreadsheets treat times as fractions of a day.

As Peter says, it is better to get help on the forum or the user list.

Re: License of specific fonts?

2018-09-05 Thread F C. Costero
Hello Simon,
No one here or on any Apache web site can provide legal advice. See
https://opensource.com/article/17/11/open-source-and-fonts for a layman's
discussion of font licensing. What that article seems to say is that
whether you can include the font when you distribute a document depends on
the license. For example, this Microsoft site (
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/font-redistribution-licensing)
says you may not copy or redistribute their fonts, though they can be
embedded for certain uses. It seems you will have to think about just how
your writing will be distributed and then read the font licenses and check
with a lawyer if necessary.

Re: Small website refresh

2018-11-23 Thread F C. Costero
I like the update. I am puzzled by the three different Download
buttons/links. The one at the top right says Download, there is a central
one for Download For Windows, and a small link under that that says Other
Platforms. All three lead to the standard download page where the OS is
detected automatically. On this Linux Mint system I am using, the Download
For Windows button results in me being offered the Linux 64 bit RPM (RPM is
the wrong choice, but that is a different problem). Why is the button
labeled as a Windows download?
Please keep this effort going!

Re: branch 4.1.7?

2019-01-21 Thread F C. Costero
One "regression" that merits immediate attention is crashing on Windows
when trying to edit a macro embedded in a Writer or Calc document ( I
haven't checked Impress or Base yet). If I open a new document and try to
make an embedded macro (menus Tools -> Macros -> Organize Macros ->
OpenOffice Basic) OpenOffice crashes immediately after I accept the default
module name of Module1. Going through the recovery process, I am asked to
Enable or Disable macros, so the module is created but I cannot get at it.
I can edit the Standard library in My Macros but it is unstable. For
example, if I select two lines of code and press backspace, the program
crashes. This problem started after a Windows update last summer. I thought
a subsequent update fixed it, but I was wrong. I have checked 4.1.5,
4.1.6 and 4.2.0 and it affects all of them. It is not really a regression,
since 4.1.5 worked fine until the Windows update, but Windows users cannot
use macros. I looked for a bug report and did not find one but my Bugzilla
skills are poor. Are the devs aware of this problem?

best regards,
Francis

Re: Error:: While installing openoffice debian menus

2019-01-26 Thread F C. Costero
Hi Nikhil,
Try purging LibreOffice with
sudo apt-get purge LibreOffice*
I did this before installing OpenOffice on my Linux Mint system and it
installed with no error. I was then able to download LibreOffice from the
LibreOffice site and install that in parallel with OpenOffice. I believe
the error you are encountering is seen with any OpenOffice installation on
Ubuntu and is not a result of your build process. See
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=50119#p228095

Re: Time for our first 4.2.0 beta?

2019-01-28 Thread F C. Costero
I am a moderator on the en forum but I am speaking only for myself here. I
think gathering feedback on the forum would be a good solution. The en
forum has a User Experience area that gets very little traffic and could
perhaps be used to gather beta build input. Feedback in languages other
than English could be gathered on the appropriate forums, though they may
need to make a dedicated area. It would be nice to widen the range of
participants beyond people comfortable in English.

I am not sure what the concern is behind the comment "What I mean is, is
there enough coverage of moderators and power users?". On the en forum we
have close to 24 hour coverage of moderators and volunteers and I don't
think an increase in traffic from a beta build would be a problem. The es
forum is the only other one I have experience with and I think there are
plenty of moderators and volunteers there to handle an increase in traffic,
though I obviously have not asked them about this.

I would be happy to make note on this list of interesting or repeated input
about a beta build appearing on the en or es forums.

Stating the correct way to give feedback on the Splash screen should be
considered.

best regards,
Francis

Re: Transferring Openoffice to new computer

2020-01-06 Thread F C. Costero
This is not he best place to ask user questions. Please use the users
mailing list or the forum (https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/) in the
future.

You can simply download the installation files for Apache OpenOffice from
the web site www.openoffice.org to the new computer and then run the
installation process. You can transfer your existing files using a USB
drive or by uploading them to a network accessible location like dropbox or
google drive and then downloading them to the new computer. Be sure to
place them on the new computer in a folder intended for user files, such as
the Documents folder or one of its sub folders. If you use a USB drive, be
sure to follow the correct procedure to eject or unload the drive before
physically removing it.

Re: Can't download updates

2020-01-24 Thread F C. Costero
You can go to the web page http://www.openoffice.org/download/, choose the
appropriate operating system and language and then click on Download Full
Installation. You will be redirected to a page on SourceForge where the
download will start automatically. You do not need to click anything on the
SourceForge page.
If you still have problems, it would be best to ask on the users mailing
list or on the forum at https://forum.openoffice.org/en/. This is a list
for developers.

As a native English speaker, I also have no problem with those

I can't help here other than provide a translation by a Russian speaking
friend of the original message. She also provided a little extra
explanation.

"I am considering your product as a replacement for Microsoft Office. I
found the following errors:
In the MS Office template document, there is a "Today's Date" field. When
I open it up, it shows the wrong Russian spelling (the ending of the name
for month in Russian is different if it is used in a date format). Also,
the month in Russian is not capitalized (July is july), but it is in this
case. Please correct."

Sorry you are having trouble. I don't have a suggestion to fix the overall

Re: open office file and Excel

2018-03-11 Thread F C. Costero
Hello Ami
The problem is almost certainly that the default program your computer
wants to use is Excel and that the icon displayed for the file is therefore
an Excel icon. The file content is unaffected in this case. There are two
things you can try to open the file. I assume you are using Windows. I am
not on a Windows machine at the moment, so I have to rely on my memory.
Please excuse an errors in my instructions.
Method 1. Start OpenOffice by clicking on the Windows button and searching
through the available programs. Once OpenOffice is running, use the menu
File -> Open to navigate to the file.
Method 2. Right click on the file icon and select Open With. OpenOffice
should be on the list of available programs. Before selecting OpenOffice,
look to see if there is an option something like "Always use this program
for files of this type". Select that option if it is present and then
choose OpenOffice.

If the above does not solve your problem, please ask on the user forum:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ You will have to register but that
is the more appropriate place to ask questions like this. If you prefer
mailing lists, there is a users mailing list intended for this type of
support. This mailing list is for developers.
