[slim] A new LMS platform?

2011-12-29 Thread ob_kook

Has anyone heard of the Raspberry Pi project?

It is a ARM GNU/Linux computer the size of a deck of playing cards with
a cost of $25. HDMI out, USB, Ethernet, can be powered off USB. This
sure would be an easy way to stash a dedicated Squeezebox server just
about anywhere.

Here is a YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embeddedv=te8jt-jUkm8

and the project page: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Hope it comes out as planned - looks like fun stuff!

Re: [slim] Cannot change library path

Not sure about that. You should be able to set dependencies on the
service startup to make it work too. But since this is a virtual
machine anyway, I just let it run, so not a big deal for me to leave it
to manual.

I don't think it's os related. Been running on Win7 for months without
issue. No, something obviously changed in my system, somewhere, but
damned if I can figure out what it might be...

Might have to consider a full re-install.

Re: [slim] Cannot change library path

2011-02-19 Thread ob_kook

Here is the crux of the problem via screenshots:

1. The mapped drive can be seen in Explorer. I have set that SC must be
started manually to ensure the mapped drive can be seen first by the OS
just in case (note: this has been working for about a year now this
way)

2. The same mapped drive can also be seen in Server Control Panel.
However, when I select it and either apply or close the panel, it will
revert back to a C:Users\music folder.

3. In the Server Web UI settings browser, if I click browse for the
music folder, the drive does not show up. If I type the path in the box
instead of browsing, it will revert as above.

Frustrating stuff...

Re: [slim] Cannot change library path

2011-02-19 Thread ob_kook

You are correct Michael.

I looked through logfiles and now realize that I changed SC to start at
system start. That was a couple of months ago. Everything was fine since
the server never went down since then. 2 days ago, we tripped a breaker
on the same circuit that the server is on. I assume it was from that
point that the library disappeared.

I've changed the setting back to manual, rebooted the server, and have
now been able to re-map and rescan my library.

Thanks for the hint!

Peter

[slim] Cannot change library path

2011-02-18 Thread ob_kook

This one has me baffled. I'm a long time SB user and know my way around
computers reasonably well. Last night I spent a couple of hours running
an ethernet cable from my server room in the basement to a new jack I
installed in the living room with the plan of finally getting past the
dropouts issues I've been having with my Duet there.

No problems there at all.

I held the button on the front of the Duet and reset the networking
settings and was excited to see if I could run FLAC files now without
rebuffering. BUT...my music library was offline, and I kept getting
prmpted to switch libraries.

So I logged into my squeezecenter server to see what's up. The network
share from 2008 Server MusicBox is still properly mapped and I can
browse it from within explorer on the squeezecenter server. But in the
server settings, there is a little red x against it.

As an experiment, I set the music folder to the default music folder in
Windows, and was able to scan the 3 default albums in there (Mr.
Scruff).

Then I tried everything I could to set it back, but no matter what I
do, the music folder keeps resetting back to C:users\public\music. It
doesn't matter if I browse to the proper music folder, or type in the
path directly, it will not stay or scan on the proper folder.

This tells me that SS cannot see the folder or doesn't have permissions
for it, but I *can* browse to it on the same PC, and from within
settings, so I don't get it. The share is online and healthy.

Any ideas?

No other changes made recently except an upgrade to 7.5.3 but that was
a month ago...

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-04-03 Thread ob_kook

I tried several of the free apps for my SqueezeCenter, and many were
pretty good, but this one is by far the best. (On Android anyway -
never tried iPenq).

I had some issues that Christian was really fast in helping me out to
solve, and I'm really happy with the app. Definitely a strong
recommendation for anyone out there with an Android phone. (I'm running
it on the Motorola Backflip).

I would like to see a little better integration with Pandora that would
allow the thumbs up and thumbs down rating. I've not been able to find a
way to do that yet. (opened a ticket on the SqueezeCommander bug
tracker).

Anyway, I just wanted to provide some feedback on this app.

[slim] MusicIP R.I.P.?

2009-05-20 Thread ob_kook

Sadly, it looks as though may be the case.

After completely reorganizing my music library, I decided to rebuild my
SqueezeCenter PC from scratch, and since it would be a dedicated box,
also decided it would be easier to jsut do the MIP analysis from scratch
as well.

After a week of not being able to get a MusicDNS key, I searched the
forums and found that one of their top tech guys left and no one was
getting any responses.

Finally there was a post from him, confirming he'd left but could not
provide anything more definitive as he no longer worked for the company.

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-14 Thread ob_kook

I changed everything to 10003 (the MIP GUI port) and re-started the API
services on MIP GUI, but still SugarCube is not working.

To verify if it is a blocked port somewhere, I have temporarily
disabled both my AV and Firewall.

Since the Mip headless is working (songs verified and mixable match the
MIP GUI, and I can do a test mix), I am going to concentrate on that. I
switched everything back to port 10002 in order to match that.

I'm doing a full rescan and will see if the disabled AV and FW have an
effect.

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-12 Thread ob_kook

Thank so much for your reply!

cparker;359179 Wrote:
Must likely is the Port number setting. ie. you have SC set to talk via
10003 but the MIP headless is active on port 10002. (or vice versa)

When you press the create text mix button in the MIP headless, look at
the Port number in the URL string ie. http://localhost:1000x ???
Then make sure to use the 1000x everywhere in SC/Sugarcube etc.

The test mix URL string shows 10002, and I confirmed that is also used
in the settings tab of both MIP, and Sugarcube as well as the mmm.ini
file.

If its not that, then it is likely firewall settings or AV blocking the
 1000x port.

I've opened port 10002 just in case.

So far, no luck with the above.

Additional tests you can do, is start the API in the MIP GUI settings
and see if SugarCube starts working. Which would indicate whether that
 Port is blocked by something.

I started the API, and changed the Sugarcube settings to 10003 to match
the MIP GUI (I assume I should do that). Now I'll wait for about 9 hours
for a rescan.

(I'm going to create a small directory in order to speed up the
troubleshooting process by only having a hundred or so songs to scan.)

I rolled back from 7.3 as I found it unstable and the new MIP patch just
chewed my library up, you might want to drop back to 7.2.1 and just bite
the bullet on long import times.

 Good Luck

I may take your advice. I won't mind the rescans as much after getting
this all sorted, so in the meantime a test database that is small
should make the imports bearable.

Thanks a LOT for your help!

[slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-11 Thread ob_kook

This is not a re-post of my other thread, but rather a continuation. I
had done enough changes to my system that it just seemed to be more
confusing to stay on that same thread. (Thanks Raven22 for your
assistance on that thread)

Problem - cannot get MIP Headless integrated correctly with SC, and as
a result, cannot get Sugarcube working either.

Description -
System:
* Intel dualCore box (home built) with Vista Ultimate.
* RAID 5 comprised of 4x600GB SATA drives direct attached to the mobo
* SC is running on a virtual machine hosted by the Vista O/S on WinXP
* (For all intents and purposes, consider I am working with XP Pro SP2
as a VM is exactly like a physical machine)
* (Since the RAID5 is one the Vista O/S, it acts as a network share
volume)
* SC - Version: 7.3 - 23837 @ Fri Nov 7 03:08:40 PST 2008
* MIP - v.1.8.1b, installed, analyzed, and working properly (can send
mixes)
* - Port is set to 10003, and API services disabled
* MIP Headless - installed, set up according to Spicefly's guide,
Spicefly's skin, and can create a test mix.
* - MMM.ini file is configured with the proper libary path, and
port is set to 10002.
* Sugarcube - v1.7.1 configured according to Spicefly's guide

OK, before this, I was on 7.2, and due to the incredibly long MIP
import times, I decided to switch to 7.3 since the patch was integrated
in that version.

Before that time, I *did* get both MIP and Sugarcube working, but I had
double entries in my library. After configuring all of the above,
refreshing the MIP headless cache, and rescanning SC, I no longer have
M in my library entries, and SugarCube simply stops or repeats a
single song depending on what repeat setting I choose.

I've gone through the threads by Model Citizen, SlimChance, OhPinchy
and others, meticulously followed the SD Wiki, Spicefly's guide, and
the MIP forums, but I am just plain stuck.

I'm sure it is something I've overlooked or done incorrectly, because
everything obviously works, but like proofreading your own writing, I
can't spot the glaring mistake.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kook

I'm going to have to throw in with the powered speakers crowd. You
simply get more of your money going towards the quality of sound that
way. What you give up is the ability to play CD's and potentially a
couple of local radio stations that do not stream (YET).

On the other hand, you can listen to so many more stations from all

[slim] OT: need a power conditioner?

2007-12-24 Thread ob_kook

Hey all, I'm having some issues with alternating light pink and green
bands scrolling horizontally on my plasma screen, and after doing a bit
of online research, I believe I have tracked this problem down to the
cable feed with many suggesting that it is likely a ground loop and
might clear up with the use of a power conditioner.

I have not used power conditioners in the past, but I've seen them
around by Monster, Belkin, APC and others, from $30 to about $3000 and
even higher.

I was wondering if anyone here uses these products and has any
experiences they could share. I would prefer to stay within a budget of
$200-$300 if possible.

Thanks!

[slim] Another MusicIP + SC7 question

2007-12-21 Thread ob_kook

I've gone through several other posts as well as the forums at MIP and
the tips and tricks posted by Spicefly, but I cannot seem to resolve
the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First the particluars.
I am running SC7 on Vista Ultimate (x64), and the latest version of MIP
(1.81b). Intel Pentium D 925 processor, 4GB RAM, and library located on
an internal 4x500GB RAID set with about 59K songs in FLAC/MP3.

I installed MIP and ran it through validation.

I can send mixes from the MIP GUI to SC7.

Next I tried to set up MIP running as a headless service as per the
instructions here: http://spicefly.com/content/view/35/32/

The problem is when I tried to do the
musicmagicserver install.
I just got another prompt and nothing happened. Next I tried to change
the syntax a bit with
musicmagicserver /install.
The result is a line saying
starting server on port 10002,
but it hangs there.

At this point, it I open a browser window to http://localhost:1002 I
can successfully reach the headless gui.

However, I cannot see any services running in Windows, and if I close
the cmd, I can no longer reach it.

In no case was I able to see MMM icons in SC7.

So, it is pretty obvious that I am not successfully starting the
service, but I am stuck how to go about doing it.

Any ideas out there?

[slim] VPC great for Testing!

2007-12-08 Thread ob_kook

Microsoft Virtual PC is free and allows you to run multiple concurrent
virtual PC's within a single actual PC. I've found this to be really
helpful when messing around with new configurations, plugin's,
versions etc. Heck, you can even run other O/S and don't have to deal
with multiple boot drives or messy emulators.

This is probably not news to many of you, but it has made a difference
in how aggressivley I am willing to try out new and different things.

I simply keep a template copy of a stable starting build (the entire
virtual PC mind you) and if things get too hairy, I delete the PC I'm
working with and start over with a fresh one.

Is anyone else using this technology?

Yes, you can run Linux on it.

I am in the industry and very familiar with VMware. Actually their

XEN is pretty good and is the basis for several permutations out there

I think Virtual Iron is still free and although is missing a couple of
enterprise features, it is pretty good.

Yes, MS is late to the party, but the recent effort (VPC 2007) has
surprised me in how good it is.

Has MusicIP completely gone through the process of analysing your

You can also select parameters regarding how similar to the original

make a big difference in the resulting ecclectiness of the playlist as
well.

Re: [slim] Backing up music library

2007-10-22 Thread ob_kook

radish;237153 Wrote:
RAID is not a backup solution, nor is it a valid replacement for a
backup solution. RAID serves two main purposes - improved performance
(striping) and reduced downtime (fault tolerance/hotswap). Unless
you're running a radio station from slimserver (how cool would that
be?!) I don't think either of those criteria are particularly important
 for typical slim usage.

Backing up to DVD (or something similar) is a good idea, but don't
forget to (a) test the backups every so often - discs don't last
forever and (b) keep them somewhere else.

Radish is correct that you also need a backup solution. Allow me to
expand on the point about RAID. There are many kinds of RAID: 0,1,5,
10 are the most popular. RAID itself stands for Redundant Array if
Independent Disks.

RAID0, or striping, as he mentioned, is used to improve performance,
but offers no high availability - if you lose a single disk, you've
lost your entire LUN.

RAID1 is a mirror done at the disk level. This will halve your
available disk, but give you a continuous synchronous copy. There is a
bit of a performance hit on writes since you have to write everything
twice.

RAID5 creates a parity disk. Basically, you can string together 4
disks, lose about 20% capacity, and be able to withstand the loss of 1
disk without losing data. There is a nominal read performance gain, and
a definite write performance hit (the overhead of writing to multiple
places).

RAID10 first mirrors the disks, then stripes them for speed. downside
is losing 1/2 your capacity.

Just remember 2 things:
1. it is not a question of IF your disk fails, it is a matter of WHEN.
These are spinning physical media. They will absolutely fail over time.

2. HDD do not like heat. If you are packing a bunch of drives in a
tight enclosure, make sure to provide enough space between them and
adequate air flow across them. Hot disks = shorter life. It is not
difficult to cook your disk.

Re: [slim] Library Scanning engine

2007-09-28 Thread ob_kook

Sorry if I was being vague.

The beta software was a performance acceleration tool which dedicates a
portion of the system memory for I/O cache together with a predictive
algorithm for doing prefetching of data. The net effect is that in most
databases and other I/O intensive applications, a 3-4x performance
improvement is often observed. (It is a well known fact that in most
applications, the performance bottleneck lies at the disk.)

Since mileage varies depending on systems and applications (for
example, there would not be any improvement at all if the disk was
*not* the bottleneck), I was curious if the slow library scans would be
affected or not. And as a matter of fact, I did install the tool and saw
huge improvments in many applications, but I did not do any specific
testing against the library scans - just a subjective seat-of-the-pants
feel of yup, that's faster...

This was all done quite some time ago, and I forgot about the tool and
left it installed. Yesterday we announced release of the product, and
that jogged my memory, so I did a search on the forums, and did not see
as many posts about slow scans as I was expecting. I was curious if this
is an issue that has been fixed or not.

I plan on running tests again collecting empiricle data, but I'm
travelling for the next 3 weeks and therefore am left to muse.

[slim] Library Scanning engine

2007-09-27 Thread ob_kook

Has this changed much over the past couple of major Slimserver releases?

I recall there was a time when there was a multitude of threads on this
forum with questions and complaints about long scanning times for large
libraries, but I don't seem to see that many now.

The reason I ask is that I also noticed extremely long scan times in
the past and addressed the problem with a self learning predictive I/O
scheduler and cache engine which my company had in beta and which an
engineer was kind enough to provide to me.

It certainly helped the situation, but now I am not sure if there were
other external factors such as the version changes which came into play
as well or not.

Anyone know?

Re: [slim] Best NAS at a reasonable price?

2007-09-20 Thread ob_kook

My disclaimer is that I work for DataCore, but I'll try to keep any bias
out of it.

I used DataCore's SANmelody Lite software to put together an iSCSI SAN
using an old PC and a bunch of mismatched disk drives. The beauty of
this system is that it serves block level I/O as opposed to file
shares, so I can create and serve LUN's to any PC on my network,
regardless of O/S.

The other thing I like about it is the performance - since it utilizes
a portion of the memory as dedicated I/O cache it is much faster than a
NAS. Mine has 1.5GB cache across Gigabit ethernet, and it is a lot
faster than any internal disk ever was.

I also was worried about noise, but since it is a standard
pc as the platform, I easily replaced the PSU and case fan, and it is
now virtually silent.

Anyway, I'm not trying to advertise (our true market is enterprise
datacenters...), but I thought this might be an interesting solution
for many here.

[slim] Party mode or skin?

2007-09-20 Thread ob_kook

On occasion I've brought out a laptop during a party and connected it to
Slimserver so that people can browse and add songs to the playlist. It's
always popular and a good way to show the capabilities off a bit.

The issue is that it is easy for people to accidentally (or
intentionally) make changes to the settings, or wipe out an entire
playlist while qeueing up their own selection.

Is there any kind of locked down mode, settings or perhaps a simple
skin that would disallow that?

I seem to remember that Moose might be good for this kind of thing, but
have never used it.

2007-09-20 Thread ob_kook

Can you go into a little more detail on how this actually works.

Sure. DataCore makes storage controller software - like what you would
normally find as embedded software/firmware on large external storage
controllers - except it is portable and runs on open systems. You
install this on a pc and it puts a snap-in to the MMC. This is now a
dedicated storage server (or a SAN)

Any storage that the PC can see (internal, external, RAID, USB
etc)can be brought into the pool(s), and you in turn use the software
to create a disk or LUN, then present it over your network to any of
the other computers on it. To them, it looks like a raw disk that they
initialize, format, and begin using.

There is a descrption of it on the website at:
http://datacore.com/products/prod_SANmelodyLite.asp

and some flash movies of the inerface at:
http://www.datacore.com/vmreg/videos/videoindex.asp

I'd recommend checking out the exchange server one and consider that
this would be the Slimserver in your own system.

[slim] Re: Cannot connect to network

2007-01-01 Thread ob_kook

Hey MC, you are right on the money! We actually fixed it last night and
finally figured it out by trying to connect to SqueezeNetwork. When
trying to simply connect to the home network, we were not getting any
information other than cannot find DHCP server. I then tried to
manually enter all the network info, and instead of trying to connect
to the SS, tried to connect to SN.

*Then* the error about the MAC address was clearly shown on the SB3
screen. (Perhaps an idea for improvement or a bug that it did not
divulge this when trying to connect to SS?)

I then checked the MAC address settings and it was completely wrong -
all set to F (FF FF FF FF FF).

Not sure about the PS, as we did not change it out and have not
experienced the problem again.

[slim] Play problems on SB3

2007-01-01 Thread ob_kook

I posted a different issue about my friend's SB3 not being able to
connect to the network. that has since been solved through re-inputing
the correct MAC address.

After that was done, I realized that his network was a bit weak out
where his SB was located (down as low as 20% strength). Being the smart
guy (smart-ass???) that I am, I showed him how he could choose to stream
his FLAC files in MP3 if he wanted to make the streamed info less of a
load and help with buffer overrun etc.

So I unchecked all of the file types and then only chose the few that
he had in his collection (mainly FLAC, a few MP3, and one or two WMA).

Well, starting to play these now, the music was chirping and popping,
and short segments of the songs were repeating (like lines and riffs).
This was also happening on streamed internet radio. Since the only
change we made was the file types, I went back and changed them back as
best as I could remember.

Now the streamed radio works again, but the local files do not play at
all! What is more interesting, they show that they are playing (the
progress bar is moving) and after the appropriate time, they will move
to the next song, but no audio.

Meanwhile, SS is synced locally to SoftSqueeze which is playing the
files flawlessly.

Any ideas how to fix this?

[slim] Cannot connect to network

2006-12-31 Thread ob_kook

My friend has an SB3 and running wirelessly to SS 6.5.1 12/31 daily on
Win XP. All has been running flawlessly for the past 4 months.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G.

The problem he began having (quite suddenly) is that suddenly the SB3
lost connection with the server and could no longer connect to either
it or Squeeze Network. We tried to troubleshoot a number of different
ways including turning off wireless security, assigning an IP address,
and even running wired all to no avail.

In DHCP mode, it will eventually timout and come back with cannot find
DHCP server.

In assigned IP address mode, it simply cannot connect.

I've run out of ideas of what to try next - can anyone help? (please -
we need some good music to bring in our new year!!!) :)

To add to the above:

We tried a factory reset and soft reset as well.

I brought my laptop over and it was immediately issued an IP address
and connected to the Linksys, so the router appears to be fine.

It may also have a wireless repeater mode where you can use it to
connect back to your wireless router and present a Wired network in its

But it sounds like you are trying to use it to connect wirelessly to
your router, and then wirelessly to your SB??? That doesn't sound
 right.

 Apologies if I've misunderstood.

My set up is Wirelsss router at one end of the house, with a long cable
running through the roof to a WAP at the other end of the house. Set to
different channels! This gives me whole house coverage. In my case I
have different SSIDs as I want to be able to force which wireless point

Ceejay, I originally was using it in repeater mode - just trying to get
better coverage in the front of the house - with no cabling between the
two.

Now I have wired it to the router in much the same fashion as you
mention above. I want to keep the same SSID for both, but I think
currently they set to the same channel. Perhaps that is my problem.

[slim] Re: Troubleshooting Wireless issue

2006-12-06 Thread ob_kook

Yes, I did conduct a site suvey with NetStumbler and chose channels
which were not in use. There are quite a few wireless networks in my
neighborhood that are in range of my house, although not very strong.

I think that from where the SB sits, it has relatively strong reception
to either access point. (The downstairs access point is really there in
order to extend to the basement theater).

There is no issue when I turn off the wireless broadcasting upstairs,
but then I would not be able to browse email on Sunday morning from
bed!

Why should one use channels 1,6 or 11?

[slim] Troubleshooting Wireless issue

2006-12-05 Thread ob_kook

I originally replied to a thread in Audiophiles below, but decided to
move it to General and give it it's own thread since it was a bit off
topic from the OP.

Eric Seaberg;160019 Wrote:
I have to throw in an answer here since I just went through a whole lot
of grief trying to get my SB to quit dropping! I have a Transporter in
the livingroom, no more than 3 feet away from my wireless AP, and it's
rock solid. The SB upstairs in the master bedroom is another story,
and even though I've got an average 70% signal to it, it can NOT handle
uncompressed files. Especially when synchronized, I have to LIMIT the
SB to 320k. If I set it to NO LIMIT, it'll spit and sputter all
 night.

Now, my wireless network is running 811b compatible since I've got
several 'older' Mac powerbooks. I've considered running wire to the SB
just to help it, but I'm going to try an OMNI external antenna first to
see if that fills in the gaps between upstairs and downstairs.

I am not certain I understood you correctly, but I had a similar issue
that I have been troubleshooting.

My Wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) is upstairs, and I have a wireless
access point (Linksys WAP54G) downstairs in order to get full house
coverage. SlimServer is attached via ehternet to the WRT54G. The
Squeezebox is much closer to the downstairs AP and is running
wirelessly. Both router and AP broadcast the same SSID and have same
encryption.

I was getting stutters and dropouts when playing FLAC even though I had
great connectivity (90%+). If found that when I disabled the downstairs
AP, I actually had much fewer dropouts and stutters even though I only
had 50-60% signal.

This led me to believe that perhaps the issue was in the wireless
transfer between the WRT54G and the WAP54G, so I ran a cable to connect
them (previously they were also wirelessly connected).

To test it, I disabled the wireless broadcasting upstairs and only used
the AP for the SB. Perfect. No dropouts, full buffer, much better
performance.

The intersting thing is when I turned the wireless broadcast back on
upstairs, the problems again manifested themselves in the same form
(stutters, dropouts).

I am wondering if the SB is getting confused and trying to log into
both the WRT and the WAP. Any ideas?

When I first start slimserver it automatically launches my browser and

If I then right click the icon in the lower right taskbar and choose

[slim] How does file types work?

2006-11-28 Thread ob_kook

Specifically, if you have more than one style checked, what is the
behaviour of Slimserver?

for example,

MP3 -- MP3(built-in) (streams MP3)
MP3 -- lame/InguzDSP (streams FLAC)

If both are checked, will it stream in the built in when I am not using
InguzDSP and switch if I use the Inguz plug-in?

Or, if I ONLY check MP3 -- lame/InguzDSP (which streams in FLAC), does
that mean all MP3's will only stream in FLAC?

THanks Ceejay - that answers the MP3 question. Since InguzEQ streams in
FLAC and FLAC takes precendence over MP3, all MP3 files will stream in
FLAC when InguzEQ is active (if I read the post and understood
correctly).

What about if both FLAC (included) and FLAC (FLAC/InguzEQ) are checked?
Which would take precendence in this case? Or should one only choose one
or the other within file types?

[slim] Restructuring physical folders for Various Artists

2006-11-27 Thread ob_kook

I enlisted some help to undertake a pretty big ripping project (over
2000 CDs) and ripped everything to FLAC. The tags were set up well and
except for some minor clean-up using TagRename, I'm pretty happy with
this aspect.

THe problem is that I missed a setting in EAC and instead of all the
Various Artist/Compilation CDs ending up in their own directory, it
split out each artist into their own folder. Therefore I now have a
tone of artist folders with only 1 or 2 songs in them.

Is there an easy tool or method to identify these and re-unite them in
an Album folder as opposed to Artist folder?

I'm a fan of Logitech actually. I use their G15 keyboard, mouse, and

think that this move will eventually help with the integration of some
of these peripherals into how we all use SB's.

I too have never associated them with upscale audio, but if they intend
to keep Slim Devices acting as an independent business unit, I think the
synergies are compelling. It would be nice to see the Squeezebox and

2006-08-08 Thread ob_kook

I know that this thread has shown up before, but even after tracking
several of them down and reading them through to their entirety, I
cannot solve this problem.

The problem is that:
1. Asian characters in streaming stations will not display properly
(Shoutcast Republic of Korea for example)

2. Ripped songs with unicode will not show up in my music library at
all (folder is there, song is missing). Even some albums which have a
mixture of english titles, Japanese titles, or mixed, the Japanese and
mixed titles will not show up.

I have the following:
SB2 - latest firmware distributed with 6.3.1
WinXP home Dell server with 6.3.1. 8468
Songs ripped in MP3, tagged with a unicode tagger program

I have installed proper unicode fonts (code2000 and cyberbit) in the
proper directory, restarted, have east asian language support installed
on my PC, etc. etc.

Am I missing something? This is driving my crazy...

I recently upgraded from the premium verion of MusicMagicMixer to
MusicIP, and have copied the library and user files as per a related
post to get up on the most recent version without having to go through
a full analysis. I also installed 6.2.2 GA version of Slimserver.

What I am confused about and have not been able to find helpful
documentation is the process in getting the SS interface to interact
with MIP (getting the radio button to show up in the server settings,
and consequently getting the mix button on the songs in the library).
By trial and error, I HAVE gotten it to work, so I know that it is
possible, but it does not seem to be easily reproducable.

It seems that there is a set order of starting, ending, and restarting
both programs in order that they play nice together (perhaps while
standing on one foot???).

Can anyone provide a workaround that will allow me to boot up my
computer and have the MIP running as a service allowing me to use the
SS library to create and add mixes to the playlist within SS? I love
the great mixes I get with this software, but getting itto the point of
usability each time I start my computer is a serious hindrance.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Peter

[slim] Re: Obtaining mp3s/flac/whatever legally

2005-10-03 Thread ob_kook

One way to get around the copywright question is to go with music that
has the blessing of the owners. There is a good site for this called
Live Music Archive
(http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php), which has live
shows posted by those who taped them either from the audience or
sometimes patching into the soundboard.

Of course, you are limited to the bands that allow this which means you
don't get many mainstream bands, but on the other hand, it is a
fantastic way to explore new music and expand your own musical
horizon.

The majority of the shows are lossless (SHN) format and are pretty big,
but there are also a lot of VBR-MP3 shows too.

Now, to end with an off-topic remark, I highly recommend checking out
The Mermen.

I haven't used iSCSI yet myself but it seems like a sound concept...
RAID subsystems work great but are too expensive on a per-GB basis for
 home servers.

At the lowest entry point, it would be fair to say what you mentioned
above, with the addition that it is much easier to create and allocate
disks on the fly and with no disruption using SANmelody as opposed to a
standalone solution.

For SMB's and Enterprise, the fact that they can keep their storage
management practice in place while upgrading underlying hardware, and
also use different manufacturers storage arrays is a huge benefit.
(When you upgrade a storage array you also throw away the software
functionality which is bound within the hardware as opposed to ugrading
the server as with you would with most applcations.)

Regarding iSCSI, we have found that the performance approximates that
of FC at the 1GB level (without using TOE's).

[slim] Scanning huge disks question

2005-08-22 Thread ob_kook

I am a new user of SlimServer and am currently using it in conjunction
with WinAmp (although this will soon change as I am getting an SB2
soon).

My music collection is on a storage server that presents a virtual
disk over my network via iSCSI. My actual collection takes up about
120GB of space with about 22,000 songs, but the virtual disk is read by
the application as a 2TB volume. This is normal as I am using a feature
on the storage server which allocates physical storage as it is needed
- much the same way that virtual memory works.

The SlimServer is running on the storage server as well with the 2TB
MusicServer volume being served to it as a read only volume.

My question is whether SlimServer will try to scan the entire disk, or
only the data? I tried to complete a scan yesterday and it ultimately
failed after scanning for more than 12 hours.

I will try again this evening, but was curious if anyone could tell me
how SlimServer's scanning methodology behaves.

Thanks!

Thanks. My directory is set to the root since I have many genre folders,
and this root is only associated with music. So I guess the other
question is how long it would take to scan 2 TB! :)

I guess I can workaround by creating a folder at the root and placing
all my genre folders within this one, right?

Well it won't scan 2TB if you don't really have 2TB of files will it?

Takes about 10mins to scan somewhat more than that on my system.

Is the root it's scanning from dedicated to music or is it the root of
the entire 2TB filesystem (with all your other non-music stuff)?

The above was my original question. And considering that you can scan
more than I have in about 10 minutes, I have to assume that my original
scan encountered problems other than trying to scann the entire disk
(including the null data) which caused it to hang. I'll try scanning it
again and see what happens later tonight.

In answer to your last question, there is no other data on the
MusicServer volume. It is recognized by the O/S as a very large disk,
has been assigned its own drive letter, but the back end storage
application assigns physical chunks from an available pool only as they
are required. Hence I have 3 X 2TB logical volumes (movies, music, and
pictures respectively), but only 370GB physical.

[slim] Re: Scanning huge disks question

2005-08-22 Thread ob_kook

Thanks for the primer MrC! I think I do have a fundamental
understanding, but this was helpful. The reason I started heading down
that path was from the original fact that SlimServer kept reporting
that it was scanning even after 10 hours. I also know that backup
software doing a block level backup writes all blocks on a disk
regardless if they contain null data or not That got me wondering if
SlimServer is possibly doing the same thing. But obviously SlimServer
is an app at the filesystem level - silly rat-hole to have gone down,
really.

Even though my collection is not that big, I doubt that very many users
are presenting 2TB of disk, but then again if the O/S can handle it,
there should be no issue with the app...

My assumption now is that this was an anomoly and I will do a re-scan
and see what happens.

JJZolx - I am using SANmelody by DataCore

2005-08-22 Thread ob_kook

Yes, it is a software program which emulates a LUN and serves the disk
across a network (iSCSI or Fibre Channel).

I run it on a 1.4GHz AMD / 512MB RAM XP Pro homegrown whitebox with 4
internal SATA HDD. The software uses the system memory as advanced
storage cache and therefore is significantly faster than a NAS box. It
also works at the block level as opposed to the file level.

I serve my music disk to a main machine where I do all my ripping,
encoding, and tag maintenance, in R/W mode, and serve the same disk to
any computer or device (including the SlimServer) in read only mode.

Actually, I work for the manufacturer and don't want to get into an
advertising thing on the forum, but would be happy to answer any
questions you have privately.

[slim] Re: Scanning huge disks question

2005-08-22 Thread ob_kook

Well if the CEO sez OK...!

A big high-end storage array is just a server anyway when you think
about it: CPU's, channels, cache (for performance), and software (or
firmware) - oh, and also a bunch of disk drives (made by Seagate,
Maxtor, Samsung etc...). DataCore took that idea and decided to
leverage commodity kit for the underlying hardware, and focus on the
software.

What you get is a portable software storage controller. The O/S of the
storage server discovers the disk assets that are physically attached,
and SANmelody uses a GUI to create the virtual disks. The same GUI is
used to map these LUNs to any computer on your network. These
application computers see it simply as a disk that they can mount,
initialize, format and start banging away with I/O.

There are also features that are typically associated with very high
end storage arrays: snapshot copies, synchronous mirroring for high
availability, Asynchronous IP mirroring for disaster recovery, and auto
provisioning.

This last one is interesting and was part of my original question. We
create a pool of unallocated disk chunks. SANmelody can then create an
unlimited number of virtual disks up to 2TB in size. The net result is
that I can have, say, 10 2TB volumes allocated to applications (20TB)
even though my physical storage is only a few hundred gigs. As the pool
is allocated, a warning is issued at a user definable level (default is
80% allocated) and the administrator can add more storage to the pool.
The application is unaware of this and so there is no disruption or
down time when it comes time to add storage.

To get an idea, you can download a free 30 evaluation copy from the
DataCore website. (follow the link and hit try:
http://datacore.com/products/prod_SANmelody.asp)

Of course, this is an SMB product and still may be priced too high for
home use, but there is an entry level Lite version that allows for up
to 4 HDD to be virtualized and that product lists at $199, which is
doable for most I think.

RAID can be done at the disk level. i.e. if your adapter will do RAID
on the disks and create a LUN, SANmelody will then take that LUN and
virtualize it.

JJZolx Wrote:
Does the software also offer redundancy via RAID, or does it do JBOD
(spanning) or something like RAID0 (striping) in order to combine the
disks into single a large volume? What happens in the event of a
single disk failure - do you lose only some files, or do you lose the
 whole volume?

Redundancy can be achieved via several ways.

1. HA mirroring - in this case you have 2 storage servers that mirror
each write as it comes down from the app. You can configure a second
NIC on the app server with a failover driver and in this event can
always access your data in the event of a disk, path, or storage server
failure.

2. Host based mirror - create 2 disks and let the app server do the
mirroring.

3. Storage RAID - the storage HBA or controller does RAID5, 0, 1 etc.

If you are asking specifically in terms of the auto provisioning
feature, there are a couple of things you can do here too.

1. Create 2 seperate pools, and do a copy or snapshot from a disk from
pool A to a disk from pool B.

2. Create RAID1+0 before adding them to the pool. This should ensure
that if a disk is lost, the whole pool will not be.

Personally, I created 2 seperate pools (albeit one of the pools
contains a single disk) and do a snapshot from one disk to the other.
In this way, I also have the capability to roll back to the snapshot if
I want.

Did this answer your question?

Looks like we did it again! The answer to the question above is that
you can use a software RAID with SANmelody, but in that case cannot use
the auto provisioning feature as it requires the use of raw chunks.

MrC - don't worry about it! I know a bit about storage due to my job,
but am in no way an engineer and am always challenged by F/S issues and
networking. As I said, your post was helpful.

What I meant by block level is that although SANmelody runs on Windows,
it does not put any kind of signature on the disk. It is served as raw
blocks. Therefore, it can create and serve disks to any operating
system (well, any that has either a Fibre Channel or an iSCSI driver
written for it) including Windows, Linux, various flavors of Unix,
Novell, Mac, and even VMware. Each of those can use virtual disks as if
you actually plugged a physical drive into it.
