Hello Lorenzo,
In the latest version DX4WIN 8.05 in preferences/radios there are 6
different configurations for IC7800 models. I do not know this radio so you
should chose the model you have. If you do not find these models in your
preferences, then you should run DX4WIN updater by Jim AD1C
http://dx4win.ad1c.us/

You should chose timing of about 500mS, it should be OK.
I do not know why it jumps to the sub-VFO. If it doesn't work afdter trying
different IC7800 models, you should send a question to DX4WIN reflector,
somebody will surely have a response.

Re: [Dx4win] DXCC QSL Download - New?

2013-11-16 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
My apologies for not having responded to this thread, or to Jim's mention of
my LoTW-to-DX4Win Awards utility. Somehow I missed reading this entire
thread, but Bill W8NN asked me this morning if I would post a comment.

Jim AD1C said:

Larry K8UT wrote a utility which *can* set the DXCC flags in DX4WIN...

While true, the utility was written long before LoTW released the QSL
Download Report. The utility is difficult to use; requires installing DXLabs
software; and takes forever to run. BUT - it does contain all of the
programming logic and the ADIF interface syntax to update DX4Win's Award
charts.

The front-end (reading ARRL's data through DXLabs) needs to change. The
back-end (making decisions and updating DX4Win, which was the hardest part
to code) is still valid.

If there is strong interest in the DX4Win community I can rewrite the app as
a single-step process based on the new ARRL report. Or, if someone out there
wants to work forward from my project source code (Visual Studio VB2010), I
would be happy to share it with them.

It would be fantastic if DX4WIN could import this file to use it to

Re: [Dx4win] Moving from XP to Win7 Pro

2013-11-14 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)

Mike,

Windows 7 ignores the traditional LPT port address assignments, which is
likely the source of your problem. You need to use Device Manager to learn
the address that Win7 assigned to your card, and then create a PORTMAP.INI
file in your /SAVE directory to tell DX4Win where to find it.

My file lists 2 LPT cards:

[LPTMAP]
LPT1=$E800
LPT2:
LPT3=$EC00

If you are trying to configure a splitter function, you could try
connecting HDSDR/OmniRig to Router's 2nd CAT port. Otherwise, your
logger developer will probably need to provide an OmniRig option
where OmniRig serves both HDSRD and the logger.

Note, if you use Router's 2nd CAT port, it will be necessary to set any
polling from HDSDR/OmniRig to the very minimum (slowest possible) to
prevent overloading the control channel between Router and the MK II.

Mike,

You mention Windows 95, but not which version of Dx4Win?

95? My first suggestion would be that you donate that PC to a museum
somewhere...

Although I have a Winkeyer USB now, I successfully operated LPT CW with
DX4Win years ago and it worked very well. I do not recall the specific
combination of Windows and Dx4Win versions, but I do remember that at some
rev level Paul added code for LPT port management via a PORTMAP.INI file in
the /SAVE directory.

I also do not remember how to inspect Windows 95 to check for assigned
addresses of your LPT ports (was there a Control Panel and Device Manager in
95?) . BUT when you figure that out you create a PORTMAP.INI file using
Notepad in /SAVE that might looks like this:

[LPTMAP]
LPT1=$E800
LPT2=
LPT3=$EC00

Hope this helps,

[Dx4win] Utility program: LoTW Credits to DX4Win Awards

2013-01-01 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
DX4Win can automatically create a list of DXCC QSOs for awards submissions
to the ARRL. However, changing those Submitted entries to Checked in
your awards table after they are approved by the DXCC desk is a tedious
manual process. When purchasing hundreds of LoTW credits recently I vowed
that I would write a utility program to enter the credited data back into
DX4Win... which is what LoTWCreditToDX4WinAward.exe does.

This utility program is difficult to setup and run. It relies upon a feature
of the DXLabs DXKeeper program to: reach out to the LoTW website, extract
all of your CREDIT history (for both QSL cards and LoTW transactions),
compare all of your credit history with your log, and make adjustments where
appropriate. It also requires that you export your DX4Win v8 log to a DXQ
file, massage it with the utility program, and import the massaged file back
into a fresh log in DX4Win. Complicated? Yes. Was there any other way to
accomplish the task? ? Not that I could see.

Please don't confuse a QSO CONFIRMATION from LoTW (which is what happens
when you download an LoTW report and import it into DX4Win) with LoTW CREDIT
(which is what happens when you pay money to the ARRL for award credit). The
first is easy; the second requires some heavy lifting.

If you are feeling adventurous and don't mind installing the DXLabs DXKeeper
application suite as part of the process, you will find instructions and the
utility program on my website at:

http://www.k8ut.com/tiki-index.php?page=LoTW+Credits+-to-+DX4Win+Awards+Utility

As I said - this is not easy and I would not encourage computer novices to
attempt it. BUT - if you want to compare and update your DX4Win Award Credit
records with those from the ARRL, I think this is the only automated game in
town.

Re: [Dx4win] Mode setting wrong from DX spots, and address label printing

2012-11-26 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)

Barry,

Yes, you can set band limits for CW. The default frequency for the 30 meter
band is wrong. You can fix that in File Preferences QSO window, under CW
frequency cutoff.

There are no frequency settings to differentiate CW spots from RTTY spots.
If the spot contians the epxression RTTY, it will be posted as RTTY in
DX4Win; otherwise it will set the mode to CW.

If you want to print address labels, define the label as the QSL Mgr's
address (even if the QSL manager is the same station) and print the label as
a manager's label.

The day finally came when the old XP machine that has powered DX4WIN for
so many years died -- and it was replaced with a Win7 box. While I have
most things restored, I am stuck with an LPT port problem.

I thought I could simply install a PCI (Express) LPT port card and get
going once again, but such is not the case due to the manner in which
Win7 or the card -- I'm not sure exactly which handles the port
addressing. The card in question is a StarTech model called PEX1P and
according to their tech support person it's not mappable -- so they
could not tell me the real port address.

When I look at the card in Device Manager the Resource tab tells me the
I/O Range is D010 - D017 and D000 - D003. Again according to StarTech,
the only card they can give a real address for is a mappable model such
as their PCIPM card -- but it's not available in PCI (Express) -- only
straight PCI.

One more thing. I am running DX4WIN v8.05, but when I run the
'lptdriver.exe' file from within the Drivers folder the executable
always suggests installing the program in a folder labeled c:\dx4w803 --
not 805. I have restarted the computer according to the instructions
given when installing on a 64-bit system but DX4WIN always starts with
an error message saying it can't find the LPT port.

So -- yes I need some help to sort out the problem. If you've had
experience with this issue I'd sure appreciate your insight and or
suggestions.

Jim, I think that was me...

You can create function key files and send the content - for either mode
macros (CW, RTTY, PSK) or the packet window.

Syntax is: label | filename, with .txt being the assumed file suffix

For example, a button labeled MyFilter, calling the file THEFILTER.TXT, in
subdirectory names MACROS would be:
 Filter|%f..\macros\thefilter

commands. I wonder if these can be expanded?

Another user figured how to include a text file as part of your macro,
meaning you can make it as long as you want. Maybe he'll respond. I
can't remember exactly who it was.

Re: [Dx4win] IC 7800 WITH DX4WIN

2012-04-14 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Oms,

I also use DX4Win with a 7800, and when operating split my transmit
frequency (SUB VFO) is recorded in the DX4Win FREQ field and my receive
frequency (MAIN VFO) is recorded in the Notes for the QSO field. With the
File Preferences Radio definition set for the radio with version 2.30 of
the Icom microcode, the MAIN and SUB VFOs flicker every two seconds (the
default polling rate of DX4Win), because the software selects SUB, reads the
SUB frequency and mode, then re-selects MAIN.

difficult to have the sub VFO capturing...
What type of problem are you having?
Is the log showing incorrect frequencies or modes?

As a test:
1. Open Radio Set Frequency
2. Press the F9 key so that DX4Win begins constant (2 second) polling of
the radio
3. Watch the frequencies in the Set Frequency window
If the VFO frequencies jump around, then your CI-V packets between
radio-and-PC are getting corrupted. Something is wrong with your CIV bus.

Hope this helps,

[Dx4win] Feedback needed - microHAM device owners with new Icom radios

2012-03-16 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
It's been three weeks since a DX4Win reflector thread discussed the CI-V
collision issues faced by PW1 owners. I'm preparing an update to the
Riding the CI-V Bus articles on this topic, adding information about
solutions available from Dave AA6YQ (DXLabs), Joe W4TV (microHAM), and now
Jim K9JM (CI-V Router).

To be thorough in my report, I need information from owners of microHAM
devices, who use the newer generation of Icom radios (7410, 7600, 7700,
7800, 9100), running the latest (November 2010) Icom microcode, with the
current version of DX4Win (v8.x). No, this is NOT a Consumer reports How do
you like the product question, but a need to understand how microHAM
products react in a very specific configuration.

If you meet that criteria and wouldn't mind answering a few detailed
questions - and maybe performing a few non-lethal tests - please contact me
off list at k...@charter.net

Thanks in advance,

 Jim (et al),

Yes, Jim and I have exchanged email about the CI-V protocol and his
 efforts
to tame the PW1. As I understand it, K9JM's (www.k9jm.com) device is a
 piece
of hardware, running custom software developed by Jim, that breaks the
 CI-V
bus into segments and isolates traffic to the PC, the radio, and the PW1
amplifier as necessary. A neighboring ham has recently ordered one of
 Jim's
CI-V Routers and has promised to let me run my CI-V tests against. If I
encounter any issues (which I don't anticipate) I'll work with Jim to
 their

Otherwise, I plan to refresh my Riding the CI-V Bus articles with the
results... and of course will post a message to the reflector.

 -larry (K8UT)

Several other solutions exist for the Icom/PW-1 CI-V bus clash and have
been available for several years.

microHAM microKEYER II, DigiKeyer II, and MK2R/MK2R+ all provide an
optional isolated CI-V bus emulating an Icom transceiver that will
handle a PW-1 (or any other accessory that uses CI-V for frequency
control).

microHAM Station Master is a CI-V interfaced band decoder that has been
available for more than three years that includes a PA Port that will
control a PW-1 (including, again, an isolated CI-V bus emulating an
Icom transceiver) as well as several CI-V or Band Data (BCD) amps -
including PW-1, SPE Expert 1K or 2K, Tokyo High Power 1.5Kfx or 2.5Kfx
and Yaesu Quadra or FL-7000. Coupled with a BCD to 1 of 10 decoder,
this support can also be extended to control 1 of n selected amplifiers
like the MFJ ALS600/1300 and TenTec Hercules.

For at least five years prior to Station Master, the original microHAM
Band Decoder had an optional CI-V output (as well as BCD amplifier
control) accessories to provide the same isolated CI-V bus capability.

In all cases the microHAM solutions are not limited to Icom rigs as
the auxiliary/isolated CI-V output is available with supported rig.

2012-01-17 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Bill,

I operated the ARRL RTTY Roundup two weekends ago, using N1MM Logger as my
contest log and importing the QSOs into my DX4Win v8 log. The state info
transferred successfully. Here is the process I used:

1. Export log from N1MM Logger to an ADIF file.
2. Use AD1C's ADIF2DXQ log converter to convert the file to a DX4Win v8 file
3. Import the v8 .DXQ file into your DX4Win log
4. In DX4Win, export to LoTW, sign with TQSL, upload with browser.

Worked fine here.

I am one of the stations Rick contacted about missing State Info.

Here is what I have found that may be causing the problem.

Importing an ADIF file from N1MM into DX4WIN after a contest, and then
uploading the resulting DX4WIN ADIF file to LoTW will produce the error.
Only my call (K4CIA) and United States of America will show in the QSO
detail. My TQSL file has all the correct information, but it does not
transfer to a QSO from the imported N1MM files. QSOs from my normal DX4WIN
QSOs show the proper Detail...state/zone, etc.

No idea why but maybe some of you smarter guys can figure it out and post a
fix. Further, my N1MM configuration has everything correct as well.

Any ideas?

2011-12-03 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Brian,

Not all Cabrillos are created equal. With the recent emergence of Cabrillo
v3.0, about 1/3 of contest sponsors now require v3.0, whereas the remainder
still use submissions based on the v2.x format. Implementing a Cabrillo
export would not be one-time-and-done effort.

My vote is for Paul to devote his time to making DX4Win the best DX logging

They are asking for a way to export a file in Cabrillo format. True this is

I'm for exporting a Cabrillo file directly from DX4WIN...

Re: [Dx4win] IC-7800... jumping

2011-11-30 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
The only way software can read the 'B' VFO on an ICOM radio is to
temporarily make that VFO active, read the frequency, then make the
'A' VFO active again. My IC-7600 does the same thing...

Although this is a true statement, the more important question is: Why does
DX4Win need to constantly poll VFO B?

The software does not need to know VFO B information until the Add QSO or
Enter key is pressed. Otherwise, who cares if the radio is in split mode
or what the frequency is for VFO B? Furthermore, since the newest version of
microcode for these radios allows the software to determine whether the
radio is in split mode, there is no reason to poll VFO B unless the radio
tells the software that the radio is, in fact, operating split... and then
only at the moment you press the Save button.

Seems to me there could be a whole lot less jumping going on.

This is DX4WIN polling the radio. Your polling interval is set to 5
seconds.

The only way software can read the 'B' VFO on an ICOM radio is to
temporarily make that VFO active, read the frequency, then make the
'A' VFO active again. My IC-7600 does the same thing, using the
latest radio firmware that tells software the radio is in SPLIT mode,
and a test driver for DX4WIN that can read this bit. I think this
functionality was added to the IC-7600, IC-7700 and IC-7800 radios,
but from what I understand, the way the -7700 works is a little
different compared to the other two.

There should be an IC-7800 driver that does NOT support the SPLIT mode
bit, perhaps in an older version of DX4WIN. It won't cause the
problems you see, but DX4WIN also won't record both frequencies of a
SPLIT-mode QSO in your log.

You can avoid this by exiting Add QSO (real time), by typing ESC after
you have logged a QSO. But then the Bandmap window won't track the
radio anymore. This is how I operate most of the time. I don't type
F9 until after I have worked the station and want to log the QSO.
Then I type ESC to get out of real-time logging.

Using F130... does not happen but the frequency is complete wrong...
 it
shows DOT instead of COMMA and only 4 digits (14.20)

Maybe the polling is different with this driver. Paul will have to
comment. I also think Guy ON4AOI may have this radio, and may be able
to help you.

I hope there will be some improvements in ICOM polling in a future
version. This is my particular issue (with my IC-7600):

When I am operating split, I set the 'B' (Tx) VFO to be active, so I
can adjust my transmit frequency based on where the DX station is
listening. When DX4WIN is polling, it resets this, leaving the 'A'
(Rx) VFO active instead. Thus when I think I'm tuning my Tx VFO, I am
now tuning the Rx VFO, and I end up tuning away from the DX station
I'm trying to hear, instead of adjusting my transmit frequency.

[Dx4win] Riding the CI-V Bus - study of CI-V, PW1, and collisions

As background material regarding W8NN's post - and for those who might not

Riding the CI-V Bus - CI-V, PW1, and Collisions

For over a month I have been studying this PW1 and CI-V issue, but have not
had time to complete all the work and get the results down on paper. The
completion of this study has been delayed by the failure and repair of my
own PW1 and the learning curve I’ve had to climb while trying to understand
what’s going on between PW1, radio, and logging software.

Understand that the CI-V protocol is a bus architecture, and thus is prone
to collisions. However, before condemning the CI-V protocol as inherently
evil, keep in mind that another popular protocol, Ethernet, is also a bus
architecture and also prone to collisions. CI-V - again like Ethernet -
defines collision declaration and recovery mechanisms within its protocol.
Fortunately, the CI-V and Ethernet protocols work properly; unfortunately,
the PW1 does not. The issue then becomes whether today’s logging software
developers can overcome the PW1’s flaws and build systems that function
safely and reliably. I hope that the information discovered in this study
assists them toward that end. In the mean time, I also hope that the

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW Logbook Sort

2009-08-14 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Bert,

Yes. But your goals: sort my logbook and show cluster spots in color
require separate operations.

logbook to only include QSOs confirmed by LoTW?
Set a filter F8 for LoTW Cnfm = Yes. Then open your logbook ( Window
Logbook ) and the list of QSOs will only include those confirmed by LoTW.
You can change the fields in the Logbook window, or sort by different
fields, by right-clicking within the Logbook and choosing report editor.

a logbook that shows cluster spots in color... LoTW
This solution differs between v7 and v8.
- In v7, select file Preferences QSO, and set the Confirmed QSOs field
for Upload conf.
- In v8, select Reports Awards, and set the Confirmation field to be only
LoTW (uncheck QSL card and eQSL).
After setting these preferences, your packet window will display
country/band/mode colors based solely on confirmations via LoTW.

To do this I need to remove the QSOs... paper QSLs
No removal necessary. Per the above settings, DX4Win can simply ignore paper
QSL confirmations.

remove the QSOs with confirmations posted for paper QSLs I have received.

Re: [Dx4win] BandMap wildly wrong freq?

2009-08-13 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Rick,

I also encountered problems tracking frequency with certain USB CI-v
interfaces and DX4Win. Troubleshooting was made more difficult by the fact
that some worked properly with my contest software (N1MM) but not with
DX4Win. This bug was evident in v7, and probably still lingers in v8. You
will see erroneous readings in the new v8 bandmap and the Freq (KHz)
field.

Here's an easy test you can perform in either v7 or v8: from the main DX4Win
dialogue window, select Radio Set frequency. Observe the Main Frequency
reading as you spin the VFO. You'll probably see the correct frequency some
of the time, but wrong frequencies most of the time. Whether that incorrect
frequency is reflected in the bandmap or in your QSO Freq (KHz) field
merely depends on when DX4Win does its polling. You can try to correct the
problem by adjusting your CI-v interface settings in DX4Win, but there are
some cables that DX4Win simply will not read correctly (although N1MM does
not have a problem).

[NOTE: when looking at that Radio Frequency Control dialogue window, keep
in mind that DX4Win will not read the Icom split VFO frequency correctly .
This is not DX4Win's problem nor a bug - it's a shortcoming of Icom's
command language.]

It sounds like you have the CI-V transceive function turned on causing
data collisions. This is not recommended with DX4Win. Turn it off as per
instructions and it should work fine. I would prefer Paul support
transceive mode... but that isn't likely to happen soon...

I'm just starting out with DX4WIN 8; the rig is a IC-756 Pro III.
When I use the bandmap with Follow radio checked, it's pretty broken
 due to completely wrong frequencies.

For example, the rig is showing 50.125 Mhz right now. The band map
says 717,415.56 6m. It's sort of stable at that reading (sometimes
showing the right freq, usually not) until I spin the dial, then it'll
catch up for a few seconds until going to another bogus frequency.

There's a pattern - usually 717, for 6m. Or, switching the rig to
 20m (14,004.00) shows 475,416.56 20m. Or 1,400,526.00 20m.
 (Currently it's swithcing between 14,005.08, 1,400,508.00, and
 475,416.56 in the bandmap.)

The rig is set with default address, 9600 baud, CI-V transceive off.
DX4WIN set to poll at 5000 ms.

How do I make this work right? Seems like a useful feature if it was
 actually usable. :-)

Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR

2009-08-10 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Dave (et al),

NO! The M is not a bug, it is a new feature by which DX4Win reports QSLs
that are sent by either paper, LoTW, or eQSL. This is not something Paul
should fix.

Explanation
Start with the DXCC SUMMARY report. Note that the v7 column QSL Mailed
(the origin of the letter M) has been replaced in v8 by a column called
QSL sent, representing any combination of paper, LoTW, eQSL. If you then
look at a DXCC LISTING report, entries from that QSL sent column are shown
with the {old} letter M. {Yes... M is the first letter of the word Mailed,
but the letter S is already devoted to representing the word Submitted in
reports. What letter should Paul use? ;-}

A Workaround
You can view your DXCC SUMMARY and LISTING information the old way,
without including LoTW or eQSL activities. Press the Awards button in the
DXCC dialogue window and ONLY choose the Confirmation term QSL card. With
that selection, all of the Ms will actually mean Mailed.

IMHO
Ham Radio has passed the point where the majority of QSLing is being
confirmed with bits rather than paper. NO FLAMES, PLEASE, from those of us
still clinging to our IRCs, labels and envelopes... it has already happened
and you could prevent it. Logging software must accommodate these electronic
transactions and DX4Win v8 goes a long way toward that goal. Unfortunately,
Paul has some vestigial reminders (like the letter M) hanging around.

The way that the report generator works is causing me a problem.

Using QSL and LOTW as confirmation for DXCC when the log is up-loaded to
LOTW all contacts are reported as M. I now have no easy way of knowing
which stations that I should send a QSL to after waiting an appropriate
 time
to see if they show up on LOTW.

QSO's that get up-loaded to LOTW should not be reported as M, they
 should
be reported with some other letter or not at all until confirmed.

 Anyway that is my opinion.

Love the new version (except for the above)

Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR

2009-08-10 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
It does not surprise me that there are differing opinions on this matter - I
pity Paul trying to address the diversity via his software. ;-)

However, sending a batch of paper cards to the Bureau (which results in an
M in the Sent column), is no less of a gamble than uploading your log to
LoTW (also resulting in an M). Neither has a special meaning; both
represent a fishing expedition with hopes of getting a confirmation in
return.

I disagree Larry.

Mailed has a special meaning. We don't send paper QSLs for all our
QSOs, but we do upload them all. Uploading is a step on the way to
confirmed, but it's NOT as significant a step as mailing a QSL card and
expecting one in return. I think the version 7 way was more meaningful.

[Dx4win] Ver 8.01 issues - QSO Disable Fields feature

2009-08-09 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
For the most part, my conversion from v7 to v8 went smoothly. My biggest
problem was migrating the v7 Callsign Notes field to the v8 Name and QTH.
Solved this by using a keyboard macro program (AutoHotKey) to automagically
insert the word in between v7 Callsign Notes (Name and City) before
reading the v7 log into v8.

There are some left-over issues in v8, and thought I would mention the QSO
Disable Fields feature. The new fields (Name, QTH, Frequency, LoTW...) are
not listed for disabling.

From a priority standpoint, this is not a big deal - but I use Disable
Fields regularly and I would like the feature to work properly, eventually.

Re: [Dx4win] Some differences in DXCC summary after upgrade

2009-08-06 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Alain,

I have just completed the upgrade from v7.07 to v8.01, and also noticed
minor differences between my DXCC summary charts. The good news is that all
of the v8.01 numbers are accurate, but I had to examine the v7 and v8 tables
to determine what activities were being counted differently.

It seems that Paul made changes as he modified DX4Win's architecture to
accommodate the different types of QSL activities (paper, LoTW, eQSL). For
example: in v7, a QSO that was uploaded to LoTW but not mailed was placed in
the DXCC Summary Report in the Worked. After mailing a QSL, that QSO would
move to the v7 QSL Mailed column. However, in v8, that same QSO would
initially be in the Worked column, and would move to a re-named DXCC QSL
Sent column when you upload to LoTW _or_ mail a QSL. In my log, several
QSOs that had been uploaded to LoTW in v7 and were still listed as only
Worked are now listed as QSL Sent in v8. I spent more-than-a-little time
chasing the differences between my DXCC v7 and v8 charts to make sure
everything was still accurate (which it is).

You also may have noticed that the ValidDX field in v7 is gone, replaced
by an expanded table at the bottom of the QSO window with the drop-down
letter I for invalid. This is where I record QSOs with Pirates or QSOs in
which the DX station informs me that I am Not-In-Log (rather than deleting
the QSOs). I had 42 QSOs in v7 marked as Invalid, and all of those QSOs
are now marked with I in the DXCC column chart at the bottom.

I hope this explanation helps and assist you in finding differences in your
DXCC tables.

Thanks Jim and Kostas for your help but I find the QSO and all is OK now.
The problem is that in 7.07.02 I had some QSO checked as Invalid for DXCC
(OX/NA1SA and some 9U stations for example) but these QSO are not checked
as Invalid in 8.01. I edit two Needed listings (one in 7.07.02 and one in
8.01) and I checked for each DXCC entities to find where are the
differences. So, be careful : if a QSO was checked as Invalid for DXCC in
7.07.02 it isn't checked as Invalid for DXCC in 8.01 !

[Dx4win] DX4Win801 installation - Oxc0150002 error and solution

2009-08-04 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
All,

I downloaded and installed DX4W801 and encountered an error message upon
launching the program:
The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0150002). Click OK to
terminate the application.

Most users will not have this problem. DX4Win801 installed properly on 2 PCs
here but failed on my Ham Shack PC. After some troubleshooting I determined
that DX4Win needed the Microsoft Visual C redistribution library, which can
be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647

DX4Win801 is now working properly on my Ham computer. Initial tests with my
peripherals: dual sound cards, dual monitors, EA4TX rotor control, USB
Winkeyer, TopTen Devices band decoder, and MMTTY RTTY have all been
successful.

Next step is data conversion...

Congratulations to Paul and his cadre of helpers for moving DX4Win ahead

Hamad,

Yes, there is a way to print only one country at a time. But you have to
trick DX4Win slightly.

Situation -You have 2000 QSLs set for Label = Y and Method = Buro.

1. Set a filter for the country you want to print.
Filter (F8) example: Prefix =F, Label =Y, Method =Buro

2. Use the QSO Multiple QSO operations Set QSL Method to select a Method
for which you have no records (like ... which I use or this purpose)

3. Print the labels only, by selecting QSL Method = in the Print
Label dialog window.

4. After printing these labels, set a filter to re-set the QSL Method from
 back to Buro.
4a. Filter (F8) example: Prefix =F, Label =N, Method =, QSL date
=today's date
4b. QSO Multiple QSO operations Set QSL method = Buro

Done!

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win/LoTW help and advice please - Again!

2009-07-09 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Andy,

Can I go back and delete the last upload and repeat it?
Aha... you have just uncovered an intentional design feature of LoTW:
uploaded records cannot be deleted. Even if you upload the EXACT SAME QSO
records a second time, LoTW adds new records and your QSO count discrepancy
between DX4Win and LoTW will increase.

I could reset the upload flags and upload the whole log but would that
help?
No. Your LoTW QSO record count will double and your problem will remain.

There is obviously a discrepancy somewhere...
My uneducated guess is that when you also added some very old QSOs to
LoTW they were already there - part of an earlier upload that you forgot
about? You now have 10 duplicate records. Or {as I have done} when I
discover an error with an already-uploaded QSO in DX4Win, I correct the
error and re-upload the QSO. In that case, the old wrong QSO is still there
along with the new corrected QSO. [Aha... another intentional design feature
of LoTW: uploaded records cannot be edited.]

You have a QSO-count discrepancy that will not go away, and your best
approach is to be diligent in tracking future uploads so that you don't
increase the gap. Some users upload their entire log EVERY TIME they upload
{imagine their discrepancy!} which is why you may get more than one
notification of a QSO match. You get notified (a downloaded QSO ADIF
record)every time that person re-uploads a QSO that matches with yours.

There are lots of good architectural reasons why LoTW prohibits record
deletions, so rather than argue with ARRL's design team it's best to just
understand how LoTW works and get over it. ;-) The reality is that LoTW is
not really a logbook, but more closely resembles eHarmony.com for QSOs.
Some QSOs find more than one match {kinda reminds me of some politicians in
the News lately!} while others are a 1:1 relationship.

I have just uploaded 24 recent 6m QSOs to LoTW but have a glitch. The
actual upload was for 27 QSOs as I also added some very old QSOs into my
 log
for some QSL cards that I found for some contacts back in the 1980s. When
the QSOs were uploaded every thing seemed OK but I noticed that my total
 log
QSOs in DX4Win is 15455 but LoTW shows 15466. Until this upload my log and
LoTW concurred. It was not rejected nor was a discrepancy high lighted
 until
I tried to download the report. When I did this I got a window in DX4Win
saying Upload aborted duplicate QSO A7/M0GFA. I have looked at the
activity report and it says no discrepancy found and also says that
amongst others it found a QSL for A7/M0FGA.

There is obviously a discrepancy somewhere but I cannot find it. Can I go
back and delete the last up load and repeat it? Would that solve the
problem? I could reset the upload flags and upload the whole log but would
that help? There are some really good QSLs in addition to the A7 that I
would like to get correctly into DX4Win.

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

Re: [Dx4win] FW: DX4Win/LoTW help and advice please - Again!

2009-07-09 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Andy,

uh oh - stop what you're doing.

Your latest error description is not what {i heard} you describe earlier.
You are now talking about receiving a duplicate record error upon IMPORTING
the downloaded records into DX4Win -- which should never happen. I suspect
that you are importing a LoTW file but not selecting the correct Options
for duplicate QSOs. You must ensure that, after choosing the correct
downloaded file to import, you then select Imported QSO sets Upload
Confirmed flag from the Options list before pressing the OK button.

Essentially, an ADIF import from LoTW should never produce a duplicate
record error. If you're getting that error, you're doing the import
improperly.

 Well guys,

I don't know what to make of it. None of these 27 QSOs could have been
uploaded before. Nothing show about duplicate records on LoTW Your
Account/Your Activity tab. There it just shows an upload of 27 QSOs with
 6
QSLs. Below is a copy of the Activity report. It is only when I try to
upload the QSLs that DX4Win informs me that the download has been aborted
because A7/M0FGA is a dupe. I deleted that QSO from my log (keeping the
details to add it back in later) and it then told me that SV1JSQ is a
 dupe.

So where is the dupe - in LoTW or DX4Win? 22 of these QSOs are only from
 the
past few weeks, the other 5 were not in my DX4Win log before so added them
when I found that I had paper QSLs for them.

Does this glitch mean that from now on I'm going to have discrepancies
whenever I upload my log and then download QSLs?

Is there any way to get back to a clean position so that future uploads
 etc
 are clean?

Karl,

N1MM has a menu-driven macro file selection feature, while DX4Win does not.
There is no slick way to accomplish what you are asking in DX4Win, but
there is an inelegant method:

Edit DX4WIN.INI - the MMTTY macro definitions are embedded in a section
called [MMTTYKEYS] in your /save/dx4win.ini file. Using Notepad, you could
create unlimited MMTTY macro definition files (like K1KO_DXing.xxx), saving
each with a separate meaningful name. Then copy/paste from those files into
the DX4WIN.INI file [MMTTYKEYS] section to switch your macros

Anybody know of any way to prepare various sets of commands for
the F-keys in the MMTTY add-on to DX4WIN?? Sort of like the way
it's done in N1MM --- set the macros up the way you want them,
save to a file with title (like K1KO_DXing.xxx) and then be able

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW, DX4WIN and contest logs

2009-03-14 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Tom,

I agree wholeheartedly with Mel. I use DX4Win as my core logging program,
and N1MM as my contesting software. After every contest I export/import into
DX4Win using the nice ADIF2DXQ.exe utility from AD1C.

Disk space is cheap. DX4Win can handle your QSO counts. Bring the contest
records into DX4Win and let it be your core logging program and your ONLY
point of origin for QSL'ing -- including uploads into LoTW.

EDITORIAL: LoTW, despite its name, is NOT a logging program and could best
be described as eHarmony.com for QSOs, with ARRL Award credits. LoTW
permits duplicate uploaded QSO records and there is no mechanism (nor plan)
to offer a delete QSO function. I think each DXer needs a single composite
view of their QSO counts, totals, awards, and QSL status. If you maintain
two sources of QSO knowledge, and/or start QSLing from two applications
(N1MM and DX4Win) you run the risk of eventually duplicating records on
LoTW... which means your total LoTW QSO upload count will never reconcile
with your local QSO count(s). As an ex-IT database guy, that scenario makes
my head hurt.

 Hi Tom.

I just can't think of any good reason not to import all your contacts

of one large log instead of dozens of small ones. I use Writelog. After
the contest I import everything and delete all contest logs after a few
 months have elapsed.

 Tom Brown wrote:
Soliciting opinions on this. I keep my everyday log in DX4WIN but also

with most award counts so it's rare that I work a new one during a
contest, although a band credit here or there is possible. I do not
import my contest logs into DX4WIN because I don't feel the need to bring
in so many unneeded records. Lately, I've been thinking about uploading
my contest logs to LOTW and then picking up only LOTW confirmations from
the contest and importing them into my log when I do my normal DX4WIN
LOTW up and down. Any opinions on this? Pros and cons?

Re: [Dx4win] RTTY PTT Keying

2009-02-23 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Flam,

Yes, DX4Win will key PTT (and the CW port) from your PC's parallel port.
You'll need to build a simple one transistor switch, and which will fit
inside the hood of a 25 pin LPT plug. See either the DX4Win or the MMTTY
Help files for excellent details. If you have a printer connected to the
parallel port, you can still use that same port for your PTT keying.

I operate lots of RTTY with DX4Win, and clicking on packet spots sets my rig
(an Icom) mode = RTTY only when the expression RTTY is in the spot.
Otherwise DX4Win will usually set the mode = CW (depends on other band
settings in the DX4Win preferences).

Sorry, but I am not familiar with the FT-1000 serial interface.

Also: QSO-Special keys CW/RTTY does not seem to work in the QSO

when working RTTY. It unchecks itself every time i hit a function key to
 active a text macro.

 The setup is:
 COM1: WinKeyer
 COM2: FT-1000MP
 PC: older compaq (450MHz). WinXP.

The COM2 port interface is not fully implemented (or broken) regarding
RTS/CTS/DSR. I found this out when connecting the Winkeyer to COM2. It
 only
worked, when connected to COM1. Winkeyer needs theese lines for
 powersupply.

The radio is connected to the PC via the backpanels packet input. When
working RTTY you put the radio in packet mode.
Unfortunately, Dx4Win records this (correctly enough) as a PAC QSO when
logging. Is there any way of changing this, so RTTY is recorded ?

I have experimented with the .RIG file and and change the mode string for
PAC to the same string as RTTY. When i click on a RTYY spot on the
dxcluster window - it sets the mode on the radio to PAC. However, this
 is
changed the next time the PC polls the radio for information, and the QSO
mode flips back to PAC :=)

Eric,

This problem has been around since Microsoft added security measures for
file types that pose a virus or trojan risk (including Help files). You need
to tell Windows that it's ok to open this file, which you cannot do
programmatically from within DX4Win when you press the F1 key. I had the
same problem. Here's how I fixed it:

-- Close DX4Win.
-- Use My Computer to navigate to the /DX4WIN directory.
-- Locate the help file DX4WIN.CHM, and double-click on it.
-- The Help file should open properly, _OR_
...you might get a Windows security prompt asking OK to open this
file?. Say yes.
-- Close the Help file and My Computer.

-- Relaunch DX4Win, click the Help tab. It should now (and evermore) work
properly.

The import/export menu is a little counter-intuitive.

- First, open the Import/export dialog window with File Import/Export

- Second, select the type of transfer (ADIF in this case)

- Third, within the Import/Export dialog window, click back on File and choose
whether you want to Import or Export the file.

- Fourth, a file dialog window will appear in which you give the exported file
a directory location and name.

Hope this helps...

No, there is no way. Based on your settings for CW frequency cutoff under
File Preferences QSO, any spot that does not include the text RTTY in its

I am trying out RTTY so I have configured Dx4win to interface to MMTTY and it
all seems to work well with one small but annoying exception. It appears that
Dx4win relies on the remarks column in cluster spots to signal RTTY and if
there it sets the mode to RTTY and passes it on to the rig. If it is not there
the correct mode does not appear to be set. Is there any way to force the mode
to RTTY and have Dx4win just ignore the remarks in the spot?

Re: [Dx4win] SUMMARY - Measuring the LoTW import process

2009-02-01 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
All,

Just to close this topic Randy's analysis was correct. The 30 missing
QSOs were records that had already been confirmed within DX4Win, and which
the other station had resubmitted to LoTW.

Paul was kind enough to dissect my log and confirm that this diagnosis. He
said that he will modify the import routine to report these types of
situations to the user.

Case closed.

Re: [Dx4win] Measuring the LoTW import process

2009-01-31 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Randy,

Thank you for this explanation, which makes perfect sense. duh - why didn't
I think of that? If the other stations are re-submitting the same QSOs,
then it's possible that those 20 unaccounted for QSOs had been confirmed
via an earlier download and won't be reconfirmed.

Maybe I'll perform another download in a few days, when I haven't just run a
contest. The LoTW download file should be small enough that I can easily
compare every downloaded QSO and see what's happening. Examining this
download with 294 QSOs in it only made my head hurt! ;-)

[Dx4win] Measuring the LoTW import process

2009-01-30 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Today I downloaded an LoTW report from the ARRL web site and imported the
files into my DX4Win log. When the process was completed, I somehow had 20
unaccounted for LoTW QSOs. Here's the details:

Before the download and import, I set a filter to get a count of the
existing LoTW confirmed QSOs. I had 8105 confirmed LoTW QSLs. I downloaded
an LoTW file from the ARRL with 294 QSOs in it. The DX4Win import program
reported that it had confirmed 264 uploaded QSOs. After importing, another
filter count reported that I now had 8369 confirmed LoTW QSLs. That makes
sense: 8105 existing confirms, plus 264 new confirms, equals a new total of
8369 LoTW confirms. No problem.

BUT... the downloaded LoTW file had 294 QSL records. DX4Win only accepted
confirmations for 264 of the 294. What was wrong with the other 20 records
in the LoTW file? Because LoTW's server ONLY matches on QSOs that I have
already uploaded, it would be impossible to receive back from LoTW any
records that are not already in my logbook. Right? How do I identify the 20
unaccepted records out of the 294?

Has anybody else noticed this problem?

Mark,

You're not doing anything wrong. The DXCC SUMMARY report ignores an active
filter, so the summary you see is for your entire log.

Jim (AD1C) has written a nice utility for calculating your Marathon score
and creating the Marathon submission. You can find the program and
instructions here:

http://software.ad1c.us/marathon/index.htm

Alternately, you could:
 1. Set the DX4Win filter for the year 2008
 2. File Save as... the filtered DX4Win log to a new log file
(WD4ELG2008)

 3. File Open the new 2008 log (WD4ELG2008)
 4. Select Reports DXCC SUMMARY

[Dx4win] Icom 7800 VFO readings not working with DX4Win 7.0702

2008-12-21 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
A new user of DX4Win, W8TE, is trying to get his new CI-V cable [the popular
one from eBay] working properly with the latest rev of DX4Win. His 7800 is
firmware rev v210, and he's running the CI-V setting at 4800 baud with the
transceive setting = off. He has the Contest Mode set for $$ so his
Notes field should contain the 7800 frequency - when it works properly.
About 30% of his QSOs record the right freq, but the other 70% show the
frequency as 471,417. If he opens DX4Win's Radio Set Frequency
window, he can see it jumping between accurately reading the VFO and this
weird 471,417 number. (He upgraded from DX4Win 7.05 to 7.06 to 7.07... all
of which showed similar results). Other features of the CI-V interface, like
jumping to a double-clicked packet spot with the correct frequency and mode,
are working correctly.

His contesting software, N1MM, always reads the VFO correctly.

Is there anyone out there with a v210 7800 who can shed some light on this
for us?

If you hadn't noticed, the webmaster at QRZ.COM has remodeled the site and
added some nice new features. To fully use the new site, you will need a
free account on QRZ.COM. This measure improves site security and allows
email addresses to be directly clickable.

In the remodeling process, however, my link from DX4Win to QRZ.COM broke.
The fix is really quite simple:

1. Go to the File, Preferences, Ext Data tab
2. In the website callsign lookup box, click enabled
3. Type HTTP://WWW.QRZ.COM/DB/ in both address fields
4. File, Preferences, Save Changes and Exit

This very handy DX4Win feature works after entering a callsign in the QSO
window and pressing the F-3 key. This opens a new window with any local
callsign data (perhaps you've installed the RAC callsign CD ROM). Pressing
the Enter key within that local data window will launch your browser and
take you directly to the QRZ.COM callsign record.

Another item that I use at QRZ.COM is the mailing label feature for
copy/pasting postal addresses on envelopes and into DX4Win's QSL Mgr
address field. Although it is not obvious, you can now access that screen
by simply clicking on the large callsign at the top of the QRZ.COM window.

Hope you find this information helpful,

I have 25,000+ QSOs in my log, and although I can duplicate your problem... I
can also solve it.

Open your Window Logbook and intentionally position your cursor at the last
QSO in the Logbook (by double-clicking on it). Then press F9 and begin entering
new QSOs. This method will position the cursor in the Logbook window at the
last QSO in the log, even as you enter new ones.

Works fine here, hope it works for you. (DX4Win 7.05)

I like to keep the Logbook Window open, showing about the last ten QSO's.
However whenever I enter a new QSO, the logbook jumps back into the log and
hi-lights a previous QSO at the top of the window. In the present (2008) log I
am currently at QSO Number 1190. When I enter a new QSO the logbook display
shows it for a half-second then jumps back to put QSO #705 hi-lighted at the
top. Sometimes it has gone to a different QSO number but most of the time it
goes to this particular QSO.

At first I thought it might be going to the last QSO with the same country I
just entered but that is not the case. For instance tonight I have worked
9G5ZZ, YM3A, 4X4FC, 9G5ZZ (different band) and KH6LC for QSO's numbers 1186 -
1190 this year. In every case the logbook jumped back to QSO number 705 which
happens to be VP2MDD (on six meters no less back in June).

Any thoughts on what is causing this?

[Dx4win] DX4WIN v7.05.04 with Icom 7800 interface problem

2008-11-22 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)

All,

I am helping a new DX4WIN user install, configure, and connect the CI-V
interface between his radio and his computer. He purchased the www.cqpal.com
CI-V interface on e-Bay and we've selected the Icom 7800 v210 500 radio
with an address of 6A and baud rate of 6400. Some DX4Win interface functions
are working, but one doesn't work. (?)

Here's what works:
- Clicking on a Packet Spot changes the 7800 VFO frequency and mode to match
the spot's frequency and mode.
- The QSO - Contest Mode - Text to QSO Note -- $$ logs the correct VFO
frequency to a new QSO record.

BUT... DX4Win does not read the correct band (frequency) when logging.
Pressing F9 puts 20m (the default QSO band) into the Band field for a
new QSO, and after logging a QSO (despite the fact that the QSO Notes $$
read the frequency properly) the band field reads 20m.

What am I doing wrong here? (his 7800 is a firmware 210 release)

response I have received in the past is to purchase an interface box (I
forget the name right now but it was roughly $400 US) at another
significant investment. So my Yaesu rotor is not controlled by DX4WIN

If I have to make an significant investment for DX4WIN to communicate to

2. Open DX4Win Window, Logbook
3. For each QSO listed in Logbook
a. Set the QSL Mgr = station callsign
b. Press F3, then Enter to get to QRZ.COM callsign lookup
c. Press Mailing Label in QRZ.COM for well-formatted mailing label
d. Copy/Paste from QRZ.COM mailing label to DX4Win QSL Mgr address
4. Print the labels from DX4Win Labels - Print QSL Labels.

[Dx4win] Setting the LoTW Upload flag for imported data

2008-05-03 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
I upload all of my QSOs to Logbook of the World (LoTW). When a new QSO is
entered into DX4Win the Upload flag is automatically set to Yes. However,
when an ADIF file from my external contesting software is imported, the
Upload flag in those QSOs is set to No. Without having the Upload flag

The import problem is a bug in 7.03. Check the list archives.

You can use the Labels menu (Set Upload Flags) to set the upload flag for
a group of QSOs.

the Upload flag set I cannot use the convenient Labels - Export for
LoTW feature of DX4Win (which clears the Upload flag and sets the Upload

[Dx4win] Vanity Callsign Change... How To?

2007-05-26 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Roy,

As you work toward DXCC, WAS, WAX... awards, changing your callsign does not
invalidate previous QSOs. For this reason I chose to continue using my
existing database when I changed calls. I did a File, Save as... and
called it my new callsign... but it has all the old callsigns QSOs in it) as
I migrated from my old to new vanity callsign.

I added a QSO with my new callsign - on the date I started using that call.
I then marked the QSO as Invalid in the Valid DX field and added a Note
for the QSO to remind myself of what happened on that date. I also use that
trick [a QSO with myself] for times I make significant changes to my
equipment (new rig, new amp, new antenna) so that I can track changes in my
gear as they relate to my DX results.

...works for me, although there may be better approaches.

Yes, you will need a new DX4Win license key.

[Dx4win] MMTTY

2007-03-11 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Josep,

The answer to you question is both Yes and No.

No = the only way to get full cascaded functionality (where double-clicking
on a callsign in the MMTTY receive add a new QSO in real-time mode and enter
the callsign into the record) is by using the MMTTY back-end engine without
full program controls.

Yes = you can get partial functionality (such as having the DX4WIN keyboard
macros) by connecting the full MMTTY program to DX4WIN using a null modem
cable or null modem software (DX4WIN is then talking to MMTTY as a TNC).
This requires a more powerful computer than the back-end engine.

Depending on your requirements, you may prefer using the partial
functionality instead of the full functionality. I wrote an application
note in 2004 connecting MMTTY to DX4WIN using a null modem technique,
another note on using DX4WIN macros into MMTTY. You can find them on WA9ALS
web site at:

[Dx4win] Settings filters printing labels for new mode/countries

After the contest, I exported/imported the QSOs into DX4WIN. I would now

Is there a way to set a filter for this type of query? or do I just have to

One of the things I have done is insert a bogus QSO, with my own call, in
the log every time there is a significant change. After entering the QSO
I use the Notes for this QSO field to record the event. (oh, and I also
mark it as an invalid QSO)

 So, if I set the filter/search for callsign = K8UT, DX4WIN displays
QSOs with notes like received new vanity callsign, new tower erected
this date, bought new PW-1 amplifier, installed new Gem quad, added
multiband vertical, replaced rig with Icom 756 Pro II...

Without a paper log this is my solution for recording station changes.

It's easier than you imaging. There is nothing special about the log

[Dx4win] log splitting

2006-04-27 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
You need one more step in the process, and it's a little tricky so make sure
you have your primary log file backed up before proceeding.

1. Open your primary log (eg. K8UT)
2. Do a File, Save as... to a new name (eg. K8UT 2002)
3. Set a filter for all QSOs _before_ 2002, and then QSO - Multiple QSO
Operations - Delete QSOs
4. Set a filter for all QSOs _after_ 2002, and then QSO - Multiple QSO
Operations - Delete QSOs
5. You now have a file, K8UT 2002 with only 2002 QSOs in it.
6. Do another File, Save as... to the diskette drive, or just copy the
file over.

repeat as necessary for each calendar year...

A suggestion: if your entire log is too big to fit on one diskette (as a
backup -- my log has 20,000 QSOs and is 2 MB in size - too large for a
diskette) you can ZIP it (mine gets down to 600kb) or use a USB pen drive
(256 MB USB drives are about $10). I use the free SYNCBACK program to
auto-magically copy my ham files to a pen drive every night.

[Dx4win] Incomming spots changing QSO window

2006-01-20 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
John,

This is a known bug (feature) about which Paul is aware and has committed

For me, the biggest problem is not that my log might have the wrong
band/mode. My panic occurs when transmitting and watching my remote antenna

an 80 meter vertical with infinite SWR! ;-( my amplifier does not like

I have asked this before but no answers other than one other who agreed
he didn't like the way this works either.

Is there a way to stop incoming packet spots from changing the band and
 mode in the QSO window.

This is a real pain, I don't have rig control so I don't know it may
work better with that but reading Dennis's post maybe not.

DX4WIN didn't used to do this ver 5.07 but when I upgraded to 7.01 it
now does. I don't know exactly when the change happened.

The problem is that you can be working away say 40m CW and end up
logging the qso as 20m PSK31 or something unless you remain for ever
vigilant. I want the log to follow what I am doing not someone on the
 other side of the world.

The only work around I have found so far other than turning the spots
off and clearing all spots from the spot window is to type something
quickly into the callsign box then hitting home so that when you start
typing a real call you can delete the bogus character ahead of the
curser. Sometimes the spot beats you, sometimes I forget to do this.
Its not a very good solution and although I don't think I have been
caught out it is very likely to cause errors in the log.

I have been using DX4WIN for over 5 years now and think it is a fine
program and continue to support it. I like the implementation of
support for LoTW and MTTY in the new version but in my opinion the above
problem is a serious blunder in the operation of DX4WIN.

I have entered it as a bug in the bug reports but never got an
acknowledgement so I don't know if it has been taken on board or not.

Hi,

As John says this is a known bug and should be fixed. I too am concerned
about antenna change when transmitting, however as long as QSO window is
filled out with, say current callsign info, then there is no problem. If
I call CQ with a blank QSO window then it will change in accordance with
spot info. So whilst a pain, as long as QSO window is filed out with
callsign I have no problems.

Hopefully bug will be sorted on next release.

I ran the ARRL RTTY RoundUp last weekend, and scored a personal best --
which I would like to submit. The ARRL contest site requires Cabrillo log
file format.

The last time I tried this (about a year ago), I get stuck when trying to
convert from DX4WIN to ADIF to Cabrillo file formats. Is anything new in the
log conversion business that would help me with this task?

Larry,

Download N1MM's Logger. It can take in your ADIF file and produce a
Cabrillo file for you.

www.n1mm.com

It's free, and you really should consider trying to use it during next
contest. It is designed for contest operating - especially for RTTY and
integrates with MMTTY very well.

When I'm done with a contest, I create a Cabrillo file to send in, and I
also export the log to ADIF to bring into DX4Win. Works perfectly and all
of that takes only a couple of minutes after the contest.

Bob W5OV

[Dx4win] Mode and filter selection on Icom 756 Pro rigs

2006-01-01 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
After reading Ron and Alan's posting this morning regarding the default
filters for Orion rigs, I decided to figure out why DX4WIN always selects
filter 2 in my Icom 756 Pro II and III when clicking on spots. For those who
have posed that same question here on the reflector, here's the answer:

Using Notepad, open \RADIOS\ICOM 756 Pro.rig and make the following change
under the heading [RC-Set Mode]:

DEFAULT - invokes filter 2:
CSTR=060002FD

For filter 1:
CSTR=060001FD

For filter 3:
CSTR=060003FD

 Ron,

Open the file orion.rig located in the radios folder of the dx4win folder
 with a text editor.

You may need to edit the MODES section to get it to go to the cw mode you
want. On my Orion if I set CW=3,2;3,2;Y then when I click on a cw spot it
goes to UCW. I prefer LCW so I have my line set to CW=2,3;2,3;Y. Don't ask
me what it all means. I just experimented until it worked like I wanted!

 [MODES]
 AM=4;4;N
 CW=2,3;2,3;Y
 FM=5;5;N
 PACK=6;6;N
 SSB=1,0;1,0;N

 From the Orion software docs:

ASCII ?0? (0x30) for USB mode
ASCII ?1? (0x31) for LSB mode
ASCII ?2? (0x32) for UCW mode
ASCII ?3? (0x33) for LCW mode
ASCII ?4? (0x34) for AM mode
ASCII ?5? (0x33) for FM mode
ASCII ?6? (0x34) for FSK mode

I'm not sure how to set it up for RTTY though.

 73,

 Alan N5NA

 ron.n9au wrote:

When clicking on a RTTY spot, the mode goes to USB

In both cases, the QSO window mode is correct.

Is there a way to have the program go back through the log and check for

[Dx4win] SyncBack_DX4WIN_BACKUPS

2005-12-26 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
George,

Gary has found a feature that I overlooked in SyncBack. When you create a
schedule for a profile, there is an Advanced Schedule Options screen on
which you can declare the start date and repeat interval for backups. So,
you could define a backup to run every day at 00:00, and then tell it to
repeat every 5 minutes (or whatever number of minutes you want) for 24
hours. Essentially, this creates a backup that runs every 5 minutes forever!

Thanks for the tip, Gary!

 Hi, Larry:

I got SyncBack to do ten-minute backups for DX4WIN and for N1MM

I wanted to use the Synchronize feature, but I couldn't get it going. It
seemed like they wanted me to download and pay for SyncBackSE to get
 synchronization to work.

So, it will do a job -- sort of.

I'm afraid I might have mis-marketed SyncBack when I talked about its
benefits here on the reflector. SyncBack is a great backup program for
doing daily (or less frequent) backups, but it is NOT the right tool for
mirroring two drives in real-time or at short intervals. There are some
software programs out there that will do this -- as well as some
hardware-only solutions -- but I don't use them and have no
 recommendations.

I simply back-up my DX4WIN \SAVE directory daily, and my entire
collection of \HAM RADIO programs weekly. I figure that's good enough for
me... stuff doesn't change that often here!

accessed via FileDatabasesLabels. After selecting the Callsign font
area I can set the font from Regular to Bold and then exit via the OK's.
If I then re-open the Label database the Bold setting has been reverted
back to Regular and was not permanently saved. During a label printing
session I can modify the Callsign font to Bold and all works well.
However, the Bold setting is not saved across printing sessions either.

Is there a method to permanently store the Callsign font Bold setting in
the label database? I have tried editing the database (I assume it to
be dx4win.lab in the Save folder) with MS Word, WordPad, and Notepad but
it does not seem to be editable by these methods.

Any ideas?

I have SyncBack (free version) set up to back up the DX4WIN Save file

I notice that the Syncback web page says that only the paid version will
back up open files. I presume this means the Freeware version won't. At
best this makes for an issue of timing, to make sure that you get the
absolutely last version of the DX4WIN log.

Actually, barring a hard drive failure, DX4WIN's built-in backup process
is about as good as I have seen - in over 80,000 QSOs logged, I have never
lost one, and believe me, I've tried (;^))

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone.

[Dx4win] Backups

2005-12-20 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Paul,

Like others here, I also use Syncback. This free program will backup to a
pen drive, a CD rom, a network drive, or an FTP site. As part of the backup,
you can configure Syncback to compress data into a ZIP file, making the
external file transfer smaller/faster; and can also encrypt the file, making
your data protected while on that internet site.

[Dx4win] Internet / Cluster - Telnet selection setup

2005-11-21 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Mark,

Although DX4WIN will not auto-connect to a telnet connection, you can modify
the DX4WIN.TCP file to life nicer. Using Notepad (or any other text
editor), open the file and put your favorite cluster site(s) at the top.
Then, when the Select Internet address dialog box opens, the cursor will
be positioned on your favorite site and you only have to press the Enter
key to proceed.

The first three lines of my TCP file look like this -- I added underscores
in line 3 to make my two favorites even more obvious in the TCP list.

Bill,

small specification to this:

Search with filter F8 all PSK31 QSOs.
Export (File / Import Export) this only PSK31 QSO as adif file
(ok1fm_psk31.adi)
Open new empty log (File / New) ok1fm_psk31.dxl
Import ok1fm_psk31.adi

You will have PSK31 QSO log only

Use same way for SSTV QSOs or others.

[Dx4win] Rigblaster

2005-10-05 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
John,

I use the RIGblaster Plus with an Icom 756 ProIII, DX4Win 7.01, MMTY in FSK,
and a WaveNode wattmeter (LPT port interface). I operate phone, CW, RTTY,
and PSK modes, and it works well _AFTER_ spending a lot of time messing
around with the internal jumpers. I can switch between modes instantly
without any reconfiguration or switch flipping -- accomplished only by using
2 serial and two parallel ports.

- first serial port for rig control
- second serial port for MMTTY transmit control
- first parallel LPT port for rotor control
- second parallel port for CW keying and Wavenode wattmeter interface

If you decide to go with a RIGblaster Plus, let me know -- I'd be happy to
share the document I wrote that describes the correct settings in the RB
Plus. (( I do not know if those would translate into equal success with a
straight RIGblaster))

I spoke with them on the phone and they said it will be supported in the
7.02 version whenever it comes out. He said that M2 changed the firmware
 program without letting anyone know.
The change is minor. Apparently the older rotors respond to A= ###, the
newer versions of the rotor responds to A###. As a stoopgap until the
change is made I have been using HyperTerm for control.

[Dx4win] rtty

2005-05-30 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Don,

The following is part of an email exchange I had with WK6F about 18 months
ago. He was able to get his KAM plus working with DX4WIN (using the null
serial cable route) by using these control sequences.

Hope this helps you also,

Subject: Re: [MMTTY] KAM emulation

Ken,

I use MMTTY in TNC241 emulation mode... primarily because that's what I
could get to work with my DX4WIN logging program. (I run MMTTY and DX4WIN
within one computer, with null modem software, so that they talk to each
other with a virtual null modem cable). Disclaimer: I know nothing about
KAM's cmd control codes -- but this is what happened when I hacked around
with it --

As an experiment, I switched to KAM emulation. MMTTY sent the following
screen and prompt to DX4WIN...
=
MMTTY Ver1.64 (C) JE3HHT 2000-2003.
TNC emulation.
Command 'RTTY'
To RX:Ctrl+C,R
To TX:Ctrl+C,T

cmd:
=
From that cmd: prompt, if I type RTTYenter I get a -RTTY 45-
response from MMTTY. Then, if I type ctrl+CR, receive character begin
arriving in the emulation receive window. If I type ctrl+CT the software
kicks MMTTY into transmit mode and send whatever characters are in the
outbound buffer. I can then toggle back-and-forth between rcv and xmt by
using those control codes. If I type ctrl+CX, MMTTY halts emulation and
returns to the cmd: prompt.

Not sure if this helps you or not -- but if you have some specific tests
you would like me to try send me an email off-line and we can hack at it.

Don, With the KAM or KAMPlus in the terminal mode,
at the command prompt, you type RTTY + Enter to get the KAM into the RTTY
mode.
Then %CT%M is the command for putting the TNC into the Transmit mode,
and %CE is the command to return to the Receive mode. You can program a
couple of function keys to do this for you, so you can just use one of the F
keys to TX and another to RX. I think this is what you are looking for?

[Dx4win] Re: Correction to Solved with v6.04! Multiple PCI parallel ports...

2005-01-22 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
My apologies to all, but my over-zealous spell-check program renamed the
manufacturers of two parallel cards that I have successfully tested with the
new software arghhh. Here are the correct titles and a little more detail
about each:

  1. Dell motherboard LPT port as LPT1 at 0378 - Actually, any computer's
LPT1 port should work in native mode - so you already have one LPT port
under Windows 2K/ XP without any special configuration.

  2. A LAVA parallel card - These cards are slightly more expensive than
others, but are true PlugPlay and do not require the installation of
 custom drivers.

  3. A NetMos parallel card - This brand is sold by several retailers on
the Internet for about $11, and come with custom drivers on a CD that you
will insert into your computer upon installation.

  4. A ByteRunner serial/parallel card - These cards have been very
popular with DX4WIN clients who use them for additional serial ports, and
come with custom drivers on a diskette. Unfortunately, the driver
software does not display the virtual memory address under My Computer -
Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. You will need a small
utility program called VSSHOW.COM (downloadable from several sites on the
web or from ByteRunner/VSCOM support). This utility, which must be run
from a DOS boot disk (NOT from a Windows, Run, CMD DOS prompt), searches
for their card and gives you the LPT address in hex.

Sorry for the error,

[Dx4win] Solved with v6.04! Multiple PCI parallel ports under Win2K and WinXP

2005-01-20 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Thanks to the Paul's efforts (as well as programmers for other products),
you can now interface to multiple parallel (LPT) ports under Windows XP and
Windows 2000. This means that products like: DX4Win's CW driver, the
WaveNode WN-1 wattmeter, band decoders (remote antenna switches) from ON4AOI
and TopTen, and the ARSWin rotor interface from EA4TX can all simultaneously
interface to PCI parallel ports.

The 4 parallel ports that worked properly for me under this new
configuration were:
  1. Dell motherboard LPT port as LPT1 at 0378
  2. A LAVA parallel card
  3. A Memos parallel card
  4. A Byte serial/parallel card (VSCOM drivers - see note below)

I am running DX4WIN with 4 of 5 of the devices listed above, and they all
happily coexist using 3 LPT ports in my computer. If anyone has problems
with this, I'd be happy to respond to any questions.

-larry
K8UT

The following is a short tutorial for DX4WIN users. If you are using a
product from one of the vendors listed above you may also need to configure
their programs -- all of them have recently modified their configuration
software to accommodate PCI LPT ports.
===
DESCRIPTION
The new PlugPlay features of Windows 2000 and Windows XP has simplified the
installation of additional parallel ports by eliminating the need for manual
configuration. Unfortunately, this simplification has created complications
for computers with parallel ports connected to custom (non-printer) devices
like transceivers, CW keying, band decoders, rotors, and wattmeters. As a
result, devices connected to the traditional parallel port of LPT1 at memory
address 0378(hex) will work properly, but any devices connected to parallel
ports LPT2 and LPT3 will not work properly.

Version 6.04 of DX4WIN supports these new virtual-memory parallel ports (LPT
ports). The DX4WIN604\SAVE directory includes PORTMAP.INI that defines the
memory location of virtual-memory parallel cards. For each LPT port (LPT1,
LPT2, LPT3) in DX4WIN, the user can define the decimal memory location of
the card driver. Here is how to perform that task.

CONFIGURATION
1. INSTALL THE PARALLEL CARD - Use the installation instructions from the
manufacturer.

2. FIND THE MEMORY LOCATION OF THE CARD - Right-click on My
Computer, -Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. Double-click on
the LPT port, and on the Resources tab, note the starting memory location
(EXAMPLES: LPT1 should be 0378, a motherboard LPT2 should be 0278,
virtual-memory LPT addresses will be located much higher in memory with
address like DC50). [NOTE: **See special instructions below for finding
memory locations for ByteRunner or VSCOM cards.]

3. CONVERT THE HEX MEMORY ADDRESS TO A DECIMAL NUMBER - The number from
Device Manager is in hexadecimal, and you must convert that number to
decimal format for entry into the PORTMAP.INI file. There are many
hex-to-decimal converters on the web (
http://www.ronshardwebapps.com/Numbers.asp ) [EXAMPLES: 0378 hex converts to
888 decimal address, DC50 hex converts to 56400 decimal address)

4. EDIT THE PORTMAP.INI FILE - Using Notepad, navigate to the DX4WIN604\SAVE
directory (or wherever you installed DX4WIN) and open the file PORTMAP.INI.
Add the decimal address for the appropriate card. (EXAMPLES: LPT1=888,
LPT2=56400). Save the file.

5. LAUNCH DX4WIN. Under File Preferences, assign the LPT ports (LPT1,
LPT2, LPT3) as required. If you get an error that DX4WIN cannot open the LPT
port, you have plugged the wrong address into PORTMAP.INI.

**Special instructions below for finding memory locations for ByteRunner or
VSCOM cards
These cards have been very popular with DX4WIN clients who use them for
additional serial and parallel ports. Unfortunately, the driver software
included with these cards does not display the virtual memory address under
Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. You will need a small
utility program called VSSHOW.COM (downloadable from several sites on the
web or from ByteRunner/VSCOM support). This utility, which must be run from
a DOS boot disk (NOT from within Windows CMD prompt), searches for their
card and gives you the address in hex.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN to Cabrillo format - log conversion routine

I have never paid much attention to the Map in DX4WIN, but this morning,
insomniac and hearing little, I have been playing with it. The first two
 things I notice are:

 1. The following does not appear to work here.

Holding down the Control Key and the left mouse button will draw a great
circle line from the home location to the current point. The distance and
bearing will be displayed in the top of the window.

 2. The Update function is supposedly as follows

 Update Day and Night

When enabled, the day and night display will be updated every minute. If
the radio is polled or if there is still text in the CW keyboard, the
 update
 will be delayed.

 Inasmuch as a date/time bar appears, I expected that--if I entered a
different time--the day/night would update. It does not.

Are these functions not functioning? Or am I missing something?

[Dx4win] Multiple parallel ports with DX4WIN and WindowsXP

2004-12-16 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
I have three auxilliary devices (TopTen Devices antenna switch, ARSWin
antenna rotor control, WaveNode remote wattmeter) that connect to my
computer via a parallel port. Two of them (TopTen and ARSWin) are controlled
via settings in DX4WIN.

The computer is a recent model Dell running Windows XP sp2. Unfortunately,
DX4WIN ( or the control software that came with these 3 devices ) only
functions when the controlled device is connected to LPT1 - the built-in
motherboard LPT in the Dell. So -- ALL three devices/software work when I
define them as being on LPT1; but NONE of them work when configured for
either LPT ports #2 or #3.

I have purchased two PCI parallel port cards - the Byte Runner (dual serial,
single parallel) and the NetMOS single parallel. I have spent countless
hours trying to get these additional parallel ports to resemble legacy
parallel ports, with selectable memory addresses. Unfortunately, Windows XP
wants to help by intervening with its virtual port addressing... which is
what seems to be defeating the software in DX4WIN, ARSWin and WaveNode. My
diagnosis is that although the Windows Device Manager reports that these
extra ports are on LPT2 or LPT3, they are not at the expected direct memory
addresses that the vendors' software expects.

If anyone has successfully installed multiple parallel cards under Windows
XP, and managed to get DX4WIN (or other software) to connect to those ports,
I would love to hear from you.

[Dx4win] MMTTY

2004-11-20 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Tom,

If you read my documents about hardware and software configurations, you
will see references to a dual comm port null modem cable arrangement. If
you are running Windows NT or XP, you can replace that mess with a simple
piece of free software that functions as a virtual null modem cable.

Since writing those instructions, I have settled on a routine in which I use
MMTTY in stand-alone mode for day-to-day RTTY operations, and enable the
RTTY feature in DX4WIN for contests.

Keep in mind, of course, that this setup is a bit of a kludge -- the elegant
solution will arrive when Paul inserts true MMTTY integration into DX4WIN --
which he has listed as a future enhancement (no delivery date).

Subject: [Dx4win] CW function-key with USB RS232 emullation

 Hi Paul,
I have purchased very fine and versatile Micro-Keyer (MK) from OM7ZZ
(www.microham.com ), which allows full computer control, Iambic keying,
CW/PTT and PSK/Packet/RTTY/SSTV interfacing with my FT1000MP (and other
modern rigs) over the USB port of the laptop (many new laptops today do
 not
have RS232 comports). The MK uses a program that emulates RS232 COMports
over the USB port, without need to manually define the IRQ's.

I have configured DX4WIN preferences on my Win2000Pro Pentium III 1GHz
laptop (the same one that was used to control radio via RS232 ) to use now
the COM4 for radio control and COM5 DTR/RTS for CW and PTT keying.
Everything works fine as before (when I was using COM1 RS232 for radio
control, CW and PTT keying), except one thing:

The messages stored in buffers of the CW function-key keyer of DX4WIN are
now being sent with a lot of errors: omission of dots, replacement of
 dashes
 by dots, change of spacing/weights...

 The examples (changing randomly):
 F6GNZ becomes -- R6GNZ, R6GIZ, F6RNZ..
 F6EPY -- F6PY, R6EPY..
 UP -- AG, AP
 QRZ -- QNZ

I first thought the problem could be either in the USB/RS232 driver
software or within the micro-Keyer software. But, I found that with
 another
(contest) logging software (WinTest by F5MZN), installed on the same
 laptop,
there is no problem nor distortion of CW strings sent from its function
buffers over the USB interface. I tried to inhibit all other programs
running in the background, but still no improvement of DX4WIN CW keying.
 So
,I suppose DX4WIN uses some different software routine for CW keying than
 WinTest.

As the issue may have a similar impact on the future non-RS232 port
 provided
PCs, which would use USB/RS232 emulators to interface DX4WIN with rigs,
would you please give me your thoughts on the above, and let me know if
 the
issue is dependent on the USB driver program used, and if yes, do you
suggest using a particular one. I could use the internal MK CW buffers to
store message strings, but it won't be able to read and insert the
correspondent's callsign nor automatically log the QSO, like it can be
 done
by the use of the DX4WIN buffers in CW pileups.

Thanks in advance for your help.

and also with WinTest contest software on the USB port that emulates
 RS232.
The problem is only with DX4WIN and USB port, which indicates that the
DX4WIN software routines were written differently than the one for WinTest

[Dx4win] LoTW - what is the upload date? and when does it get filled-in?

OK - so I have figured out: the LoTW ADIF extract from DX4win, the ARRL

upload confirmed QSOs.

I uploaded 15,761 QSOs to LoTW. I got 1,962 upload confirmed QSOs in
response. All seems good, except the upload date is still blank. Is the
upload date supposed to be filled in when I created the DX4WIN extract ADIF
file, or does it get filled in when I import the upload confirmed QSOs?

In other words - it DX4WIN's upload date tracking when I _sent_ the QSOs
to ARRL's big database, or when I _receive_ a confirmation that one of mine
got a match? And... what action on my part actually enters the date? {please
don't suggest that I have to hand-enter 1,961 dates... ;-}

[Dx4win] Input of logdata from paper log into dx4win

2003-10-31 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Jeff,

I took a two step approach (and have only implemented the first step!).

The first step was to examine my QSL collection, go back into my paper logs,
and enter every QSO for which I had received a QSL card. (which was not very
many - I was not an avid QSL'er then). So, at least I had an accurate count
for any awards (DXCC, WAZ, WAS, etc ).

The second step (have not done this yet, one of those get around to it
projects) is to create an Excel spreadsheet and enter the essential columns
from the paper log for each QSO: date, band, mode, time, callsign, RSTs,
RSTr, and Note (the ops name if I have it). I figure it will be a lot easier
to pull data from the paper logs into a spreadsheet if the spreadsheet
resembles the log... line by line for 30 years worth of logs. Then, export
from Excel to a CSV text file and import that into DX4WIN.

offline qso add feature...that would take me forever. Any
ideas..simple...would
be appreciated. Even if it just captures date/time/call/mode.
 Thanks,
 Jeff NX9T

[Dx4win] PSK31 support for LPT keying

2003-10-26 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Due to a shortage of serial ports, I use LPT1 to key CW in DX4WIN. This
works fine for CW, but when operating in PSK31 mode, the LPT keyed line does
not seem to operate. I have gone into the PSK Tx preference window and
checked the use CW control - but the LPT CW line does not work from PSK.
(the frustrating fact is that PSK keying _does_ work under exactly the same
settings from the COM port - but my com ports are dedicated to other
functions).

Am I doing something wrong here ?

[Dx4win] DX4win and Network

2003-09-05 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)
Rune,

Although I only run DX4WIN on one computer in my house, but I can connect
to that Ham Shack computer from anywhere - from other computers in the house
or from across the Internet.

On the Ham Shack computer, I enabled the Remote Desktop feature of Windows
XP. I then connect to that computer from other computers - like from my
office - so I can be at my desk (an office in my home) and see DX spots,
work CW, RTTY and FSK, log inbound QSL cards, etc.
