Re: [Dx4win] DXCC QSL Download - New?
My apologies for not having responded to this thread, or to Jim's mention of my LoTW-to-DX4Win Awards utility. Somehow I missed reading this entire thread, but Bill W8NN asked me this morning if I would post a comment. Jim AD1C said: Larry K8UT wrote a utility which *can* set the DXCC flags in DX4WIN... While true, the utility was written long before LoTW released the QSL Download Report. The utility is difficult to use; requires installing DXLabs software; and takes forever to run. BUT - it does contain all of the programming logic and the ADIF interface syntax to update DX4Win's Award charts. The front-end (reading ARRL's data through DXLabs) needs to change. The back-end (making decisions and updating DX4Win, which was the hardest part to code) is still valid. If there is strong interest in the DX4Win community I can rewrite the app as a single-step process based on the new ARRL report. Or, if someone out there wants to work forward from my project source code (Visual Studio VB2010), I would be happy to share it with them. -larry (K8UT) -Original Message- From: Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Wednesday, November 13, 2013 5:35 PM To: DX4WIN Reflector Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DXCC QSL Download - New? Mike, Windows 7 ignores the traditional LPT port address assignments, which is likely the source of your problem. Although I have a Winkeyer USB now, I successfully operated LPT CW with DX4Win years ago and it worked very well. I do not recall the specific combination of Windows and Dx4Win versions, but I do remember that at some rev level Paul added code for LPT port management via a PORTMAP.INI file in the /SAVE directory. I also do not remember how to inspect Windows 95 to check for assigned addresses of your LPT ports (was there a Control Panel and Device Manager in 95?) . [Dx4win] Utility program: LoTW Credits to DX4Win Awards
DX4Win can automatically create a list of DXCC QSOs for awards submissions to the ARRL. However, changing those Submitted entries to Checked in your awards table after they are approved by the DXCC desk is a tedious manual process. When purchasing hundreds of LoTW credits recently I vowed that I would write a utility program to enter the credited data back into DX4Win... which is what LoTWCreditToDX4WinAward.exe does. This utility program is difficult to setup and run. It relies upon a feature of the DXLabs DXKeeper program to: reach out to the LoTW website, extract all of your CREDIT history (for both QSL cards and LoTW transactions), compare all of your credit history with your log, and make adjustments where appropriate. It also requires that you export your DX4Win v8 log to a DXQ file, massage it with the utility program, and import the massaged file back into a fresh log in DX4Win. Complicated? Yes. Was there any other way to accomplish the task? ? Not that I could see. Please don't confuse a QSO CONFIRMATION from LoTW (which is what happens when you download an LoTW report and import it into DX4Win) with LoTW CREDIT (which is what happens when you pay money to the ARRL for award credit). The first is easy; the second requires some heavy lifting. If you are feeling adventurous and don't mind installing the DXLabs DXKeeper application suite as part of the process, you will find instructions and the utility program on my website at: http://www.k8ut.com/tiki-index.php?page=LoTW+Credits+-to-+DX4Win+Awards+Utility As I said - this is not easy and I would not encourage computer novices to attempt it. BUT - if you want to compare and update your DX4Win Award Credit records with those from the ARRL, I think this is the only automated game in town. -larry (K8UT) __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] Mode setting wrong from DX spots, and address label printing
Barry, Yes, you can set band limits for CW. The default frequency for the 30 meter band is wrong. You can fix that in File Preferences QSO window, under CW frequency cutoff. There are no frequency settings to differentiate CW spots from RTTY spots. If the spot contians the epxression RTTY, it will be posted as RTTY in DX4Win; otherwise it will set the mode to CW. If you want to print address labels, define the label as the QSL Mgr's address (even if the QSL manager is the same station) and print the label as a manager's label. -larry (K8UT) -Original Message- From: Barry J Cohen Sent: Monday, November 26, 2012 8:26 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Mode setting wrong from DX spots, and address label printing When I click on a spot say 10.104 the radio switches to USB and it needs to be CW? Re: [Dx4win] Just Joined - Update
Bill, I operated the ARRL RTTY Roundup two weekends ago, using N1MM Logger as my contest log and importing the QSOs into my DX4Win v8 log. The state info transferred successfully. Here is the process I used: 1. Export log from N1MM Logger to an ADIF file. 2. Use AD1C's ADIF2DXQ log converter to convert the file to a DX4Win v8 file 3. Import the v8 .DXQ file into your DX4Win log 4. In DX4Win, export to LoTW, sign with TQSL, upload with browser. Re: [Dx4win] IC-7800... jumping
The only way software can read the 'B' VFO on an ICOM radio is to temporarily make that VFO active, read the frequency, then make the 'A' VFO active again. My IC-7600 does the same thing... Although this is a true statement, the more important question is: Why does DX4Win need to constantly poll VFO B? The software does not need to know VFO B information until the Add QSO or Enter key is pressed. Otherwise, who cares if the radio is in split mode or what the frequency is for VFO B? Furthermore, since the newest version of microcode for these radios allows the software to determine whether the radio is in split mode, there is no reason to poll VFO B unless the radio tells the software that the radio is, in fact, operating split... and then only at the moment you press the Save button. Seems to me there could be a whole lot less jumping going on. -larry K8UT -Original Message- From: Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2011 12:54 PM To: ik1MDF Cc: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] IC-7800... jumping On Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 3:41 AM, ik1MDF wrote: I am using a ic-7800 rel. 2.30. This is DX4WIN polling the radio. Your polling interval is set to 5 seconds. The only way software can read the 'B' VFO on an ICOM radio is to temporarily make that VFO active, read the frequency, then make the 'A' VFO active again. My IC-7600 does the same thing, using the latest radio firmware that tells software the radio is in SPLIT mode, and a test driver for DX4WIN that can read this bit. I think this functionality was added to the IC-7600, IC-7700 and IC-7800 radios, but from what I understand, the way the -7700 works is a little different compared to the other two. There should be an IC-7800 driver that does NOT support the SPLIT mode bit, perhaps in an older version of DX4WIN. It won't cause the problems you see, but DX4WIN also won't record both frequencies of a SPLIT-mode QSO in your log. You can avoid this by exiting Add QSO (real time), by typing ESC after you have logged a QSO. But then the Bandmap window won't track the radio anymore. This is how I operate most of the time. I don't type F9 until after I have worked the station and want to log the QSO. Then I type ESC to get out of real-time logging. Using F130... does not happen but the frequency is complete wrong... it shows DOT instead of COMMA and only 4 digits (14.20) Maybe the polling is different with this driver. Paul will have to comment. I also think Guy ON4AOI may have this radio, and may be able to help you. I hope there will be some improvements in ICOM polling in a future version. This is my particular issue (with my IC-7600): When I am operating split, I set the 'B' (Tx) VFO to be active, so I can adjust my transmit frequency based on where the DX station is listening. When DX4WIN is polling, it resets this, leaving the 'A' (Rx) VFO active instead. Thus when I think I'm tuning my Tx VFO, I am now tuning the Rx VFO, and I end up tuning away from the DX station I'm trying to hear, instead of adjusting my transmit frequency. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, jjreis...@alum.mit.edu, http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Dx4win] Riding the CI-V Bus - study of CI-V, PW1, and collisions
As background material regarding W8NN's post - and for those who might not have seen my original message on the PW1 reflector: = Riding the CI-V Bus - CI-V, PW1, and Collisions For over a month I have been studying this PW1 and CI-V issue, but have not had time to complete all the work and get the results down on paper. The completion of this study has been delayed by the failure and repair of my own PW1 and the learning curve I’ve had to climb while trying to understand what’s going on between PW1, radio, and logging software. Understand that the CI-V protocol is a bus architecture, and thus is prone to collisions. However, before condemning the CI-V protocol as inherently evil, keep in mind that another popular protocol, Ethernet, is also a bus architecture and also prone to collisions. CI-V - again like Ethernet - defines collision declaration and recovery mechanisms within its protocol. Fortunately, the CI-V and Ethernet protocols work properly; unfortunately, the PW1 does not. The issue then becomes whether today’s logging software developers can overcome the PW1’s flaws and build systems that function safely and reliably. I hope that the information discovered in this study assists them toward that end. In the mean time, I also hope that the information discovered in this study assists Icom transceiver and PW1 owners in configuring their equipment so as to minimize risks and maximize their on-air operating experience. Re: [Dx4win] BandMap wildly wrong freq?
Rick, I also encountered problems tracking frequency with certain USB CI-v interfaces and DX4Win. Troubleshooting was made more difficult by the fact that some worked properly with my contest software (N1MM) but not with DX4Win. This bug was evident in v7, and probably still lingers in v8. You will see erroneous readings in the new v8 bandmap and the Freq (KHz) field. Here's an easy test you can perform in either v7 or v8: from the main DX4Win dialogue window, select Radio Set frequency. Observe the Main Frequency reading as you spin the VFO. You'll probably see the correct frequency some of the time, but wrong frequencies most of the time. Whether that incorrect frequency is reflected in the bandmap or in your QSO Freq (KHz) field merely depends on when DX4Win does its polling. You can try to correct the problem by adjusting your CI-v interface settings in DX4Win, but there are some cables that DX4Win simply will not read correctly (although N1MM does not have a problem). [NOTE: when looking at that Radio Frequency Control dialogue window, keep in mind that DX4Win will not read the Icom split VFO frequency correctly . This is not DX4Win's problem nor a bug - it's a shortcoming of Icom's command language.] -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Mel ve...@videotron.ca To: Rick Murphy k...@arrl.net Cc: DX4WIN dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 21:07 Subject: Re: [Dx4win] BandMap wildly wrong freq? Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR
Dave (et al), NO! The M is not a bug, it is a new feature by which DX4Win reports QSLs that are sent by either paper, LoTW, or eQSL. This is not something Paul should fix. Explanation Start with the DXCC SUMMARY report. Note that the v7 column QSL Mailed (the origin of the letter M) has been replaced in v8 by a column called QSL sent, representing any combination of paper, LoTW, eQSL. If you then look at a DXCC LISTING report, entries from that QSL sent column are shown with the {old} letter M. {Yes... M is the first letter of the word Mailed, but the letter S is already devoted to representing the word Submitted in reports. What letter should Paul use? ;-} A Workaround You can view your DXCC SUMMARY and LISTING information the old way, without including LoTW or eQSL activities. Press the Awards button in the DXCC dialogue window and ONLY choose the Confirmation term QSL card. With that selection, all of the Ms will actually mean Mailed. IMHO Ham Radio has passed the point where the majority of QSLing is being confirmed with bits rather than paper. NO FLAMES, PLEASE, from those of us still clinging to our IRCs, labels and envelopes... it has already happened and you could prevent it. Logging software must accommodate these electronic transactions and DX4Win v8 goes a long way toward that goal. Unfortunately, Paul has some vestigial reminders (like the letter M) hanging around. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Dave Perry N4QS n...@comcast.net To: DAVID DERAIN k8...@sbcglobal.net; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, August 09, 2009 22:13 Subject: Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR Has this issue been fixed by Paul? Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR
It does not surprise me that there are differing opinions on this matter - I pity Paul trying to address the diversity via his software. ;-) However, sending a batch of paper cards to the Bureau (which results in an M in the Sent column), is no less of a gamble than uploading your log to LoTW (also resulting in an M). Neither has a special meaning; both represent a fishing expedition with hopes of getting a confirmation in return. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Jim Reisert AD1C jjreis...@alum.mit.edu To: DX4WIN Reflector dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, August 10, 2009 08:55 Subject: Re: [Dx4win] 8.01 REPORT GENERATOR I disagree Larry. [Dx4win] Ver 8.01 issues - QSO Disable Fields feature
For the most part, my conversion from v7 to v8 went smoothly. My biggest problem was migrating the v7 Callsign Notes field to the v8 Name and QTH. Solved this by using a keyboard macro program (AutoHotKey) to automagically insert the word in between v7 Callsign Notes (Name and City) before reading the v7 log into v8. There are some left-over issues in v8, and thought I would mention the QSO Disable Fields feature. The new fields (Name, QTH, Frequency, LoTW...) are not listed for disabling. From a priority standpoint, this is not a big deal - but I use Disable Fields regularly and I would like the feature to work properly, eventually. -larry K8UT __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] Some differences in DXCC summary after upgrade
Alain, I have just completed the upgrade from v7.07 to v8.01, and also noticed minor differences between my DXCC summary charts. The good news is that all of the v8.01 numbers are accurate, but I had to examine the v7 and v8 tables to determine what activities were being counted differently. It seems that Paul made changes as he modified DX4Win's architecture to accommodate the different types of QSL activities (paper, LoTW, eQSL). For example: in v7, a QSO that was uploaded to LoTW but not mailed was placed in the DXCC Summary Report in the Worked. After mailing a QSL, that QSO would move to the v7 QSL Mailed column. However, in v8, that same QSO would initially be in the Worked column, and would move to a re-named DXCC QSL Sent column when you upload to LoTW _or_ mail a QSL. In my log, several QSOs that had been uploaded to LoTW in v7 and were still listed as only Worked are now listed as QSL Sent in v8. I spent more-than-a-little time chasing the differences between my DXCC v7 and v8 charts to make sure everything was still accurate (which it is). You also may have noticed that the ValidDX field in v7 is gone, replaced by an expanded table at the bottom of the QSO window with the drop-down letter I for invalid. This is where I record QSOs with Pirates or QSOs in which the DX station informs me that I am Not-In-Log (rather than deleting the QSOs). I had 42 QSOs in v7 marked as Invalid, and all of those QSOs are now marked with I in the DXCC column chart at the bottom. I hope this explanation helps and assist you in finding differences in your DXCC tables. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Alain, F 5 L I W f5...@yahoo.fr To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, August 06, 2009 11:11 Subject: [Dx4win] Some differences in DXCC summary after upgrade Thanks Jim and Kostas for your help but I find the QSO and all is OK now. Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win/LoTW help and advice please - Again!
Andy, Can I go back and delete the last upload and repeat it? Aha... you have just uncovered an intentional design feature of LoTW: uploaded records cannot be deleted. Even if you upload the EXACT SAME QSO records a second time, LoTW adds new records and your QSO count discrepancy between DX4Win and LoTW will increase. I could reset the upload flags and upload the whole log but would that help? No. Your LoTW QSO record count will double and your problem will remain. There is obviously a discrepancy somewhere... My uneducated guess is that when you also added some very old QSOs to LoTW they were already there - part of an earlier upload that you forgot about? You now have 10 duplicate records. Or {as I have done} when I discover an error with an already-uploaded QSO in DX4Win, I correct the error and re-upload the QSO. In that case, the old wrong QSO is still there along with the new corrected QSO. [Aha... another intentional design feature of LoTW: uploaded records cannot be edited.] You have a QSO-count discrepancy that will not go away, and your best approach is to be diligent in tracking future uploads so that you don't increase the gap. Some users upload their entire log EVERY TIME they upload {imagine their discrepancy!} which is why you may get more than one notification of a QSO match. You get notified (a downloaded QSO ADIF record)every time that person re-uploads a QSO that matches with yours. There are lots of good architectural reasons why LoTW prohibits record deletions, so rather than argue with ARRL's design team it's best to just understand how LoTW works and get over it. ;-) The reality is that LoTW is not really a logbook, but more closely resembles eHarmony.com for QSOs. Some QSOs find more than one match {kinda reminds me of some politicians in the News lately!} while others are a 1:1 relationship. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Andy Hewitt andyphew...@btopenworld.com To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, July 09, 2009 03:15 Subject: [Dx4win] DX4Win/LoTW help and advice please - Again! Andy, uh oh - stop what you're doing. Your latest error description is not what {i heard} you describe earlier. You are now talking about receiving a duplicate record error upon IMPORTING the downloaded records into DX4Win -- which should never happen. I suspect that you are importing a LoTW file but not selecting the correct Options for duplicate QSOs. You must ensure that, after choosing the correct downloaded file to import, you then select Imported QSO sets Upload Confirmed flag from the Options list before pressing the OK button. Essentially, an ADIF import from LoTW should never produce a duplicate record error. If you're getting that error, you're doing the import improperly. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Andy Hewitt andyphew...@btopenworld.com To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, July 09, 2009 13:25 Subject: [Dx4win] FW: DX4Win/LoTW help and advice please - Again! Karl, N1MM has a menu-driven macro file selection feature, while DX4Win does not. There is no slick way to accomplish what you are asking in DX4Win, but there is an inelegant method: Edit DX4WIN.INI - the MMTTY macro definitions are embedded in a section called [MMTTYKEYS] in your /save/dx4win.ini file. Using Notepad, you could create unlimited MMTTY macro definition files (like K1KO_DXing.xxx), saving each with a separate meaningful name. Re: [Dx4win] LOTW, DX4WIN and contest logs
Tom, I agree wholeheartedly with Mel. I use DX4Win as my core logging program, and N1MM as my contesting software. After every contest I export/import into DX4Win using the nice ADIF2DXQ.exe utility from AD1C. Disk space is cheap. DX4Win can handle your QSO counts. Bring the contest records into DX4Win and let it be your core logging program and your ONLY point of origin for QSL'ing -- including uploads into LoTW. EDITORIAL: LoTW, despite its name, is NOT a logging program and could best be described as eHarmony.com for QSOs, with ARRL Award credits. LoTW permits duplicate uploaded QSO records and there is no mechanism (nor plan) to offer a delete QSO function. I think each DXer needs a single composite view of their QSO counts, totals, awards, and QSL status. If you maintain two sources of QSO knowledge, and/or start QSLing from two applications (N1MM and DX4Win) you run the risk of eventually duplicating records on LoTW... which means your total LoTW QSO upload count will never reconcile with your local QSO count(s). As an ex-IT database guy, that scenario makes my head hurt. -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Mel Martin ve...@videotron.ca To: dx4WIN dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 14:25 Subject: Re: [Dx4win] LOTW, DX4WIN and contest logs Hi Tom. Re: [Dx4win] RTTY PTT Keying
Flam, Yes, DX4Win will key PTT (and the CW port) from your PC's parallel port. You'll need to build a simple one transistor switch, and which will fit inside the hood of a 25 pin LPT plug. See either the DX4Win or the MMTTY Help files for excellent details. If you have a printer connected to the parallel port, you can still use that same port for your PTT keying. I operate lots of RTTY with DX4Win, and clicking on packet spots sets my rig (an Icom) mode = RTTY only when the expression RTTY is in the spot. Otherwise DX4Win will usually set the mode = CW (depends on other band settings in the DX4Win preferences). Winkeyer needs theese lines for powersupply. The radio is connected to the PC via the backpanels packet input. When working RTTY you put the radio in packet mode. Unfortunately, Dx4Win records this (correctly enough) as a PAC QSO when logging. Is there any way of changing this, so RTTY is recorded ? I have experimented with the .RIG file and and change the mode string for PAC to the same string as RTTY. When i click on a RTYY spot on the dxcluster window - it sets the mode on the radio to PAC. However, this is changed the next time the PC polls the radio for information, and the QSO mode flips back to PAC :=) -- Best DX! Eric, This problem has been around since Microsoft added security measures for file types that pose a virus or trojan risk (including Help files). You need to tell Windows that it's ok to open this file, which you cannot do programmatically from within DX4Win when you press the F1 key. I had the same problem. Here's how I fixed it: -- Close DX4Win. -- Use My Computer to navigate to the /DX4WIN directory. -- Locate the help file DX4WIN.CHM, and double-click on it. -- The Help file should open properly, _OR_ ...you might get a Windows security prompt asking OK to open this file?. Randy, Thank you for this explanation, which makes perfect sense. duh - why didn't I think of that? If the other stations are re-submitting the same QSOs, then it's possible that those 20 unaccounted for QSOs had been confirmed via an earlier download and won't be reconfirmed. [Dx4win] Measuring the LoTW import process
Today I downloaded an LoTW report from the ARRL web site and imported the files into my DX4Win log. When the process was completed, I somehow had 20 unaccounted for LoTW QSOs. Here's the details: Before the download and import, I set a filter to get a count of the existing LoTW confirmed QSOs. I had 8105 confirmed LoTW QSLs. I downloaded an LoTW file from the ARRL with 294 QSOs in it. The DX4Win import program reported that it had confirmed 264 uploaded QSOs. After importing, another filter count reported that I now had 8369 confirmed LoTW QSLs. That makes sense: 8105 existing confirms, plus 264 new confirms, equals a new total of 8369 LoTW confirms. No problem. BUT... the downloaded LoTW file had 294 QSL records. DX4Win only accepted confirmations for 264 of the 294. What was wrong with the other 20 records in the LoTW file? Because LoTW's server ONLY matches on QSOs that I have already uploaded, it would be impossible to receive back from LoTW any records that are not already in my logbook. Right? How do I identify the 20 unaccepted records out of the 294? Has anybody else noticed this problem? -larry K8UT ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win

His 7800 is firmware rev v210, and he's running the CI-V setting at 4800 baud with the transceive setting = off. He has the Contest Mode set for $$ so his Notes field should contain the 7800 frequency - when it works properly. About 30% of his QSOs record the right freq, but the other 70% show the frequency as 471,417. If he opens DX4Win's Radio Set Frequency window, he can see it jumping between accurately reading the VFO and this weird 471,417 number. (He upgraded from DX4Win 7.05 to 7.06 to 7.07... all of which showed similar results). Other features of the CI-V interface, like jumping to a double-clicked packet spot with the correct frequency and mode, are working correctly. In every case the logbook jumped back to QSO number 705 which happens to be VP2MDD (on six meters no less back in June). [Dx4win] DX4WIN v7.05.04 with Icom 7800 interface problem
All, I am helping a new DX4WIN user install, configure, and connect the CI-V interface between his radio and his computer. He purchased the www.cqpal.com CI-V interface on e-Bay and we've selected the Icom 7800 v210 500 radio with an address of 6A and baud rate of 6400. Some DX4Win interface functions are working, but one doesn't work. (?) Here's what works: - Clicking on a Packet Spot changes the 7800 VFO frequency and mode to match the spot's frequency and mode. - The QSO - Contest Mode - Text to QSO Note -- $$ logs the correct VFO frequency to a new QSO record. BUT... DX4Win does not read the correct band (frequency) when logging. Pressing F9 puts 20m (the default QSO band) into the Band field for a new QSO, and after logging a QSO (despite the fact that the QSO Notes $$ read the frequency properly) the band field reads 20m. What am I doing wrong here? (his 7800 is a firmware 210 release) -larry K8UT ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win

[Dx4win] Vanity Callsign Change... How To?
Roy, As you work toward DXCC, WAS, WAX... awards, changing your callsign does not invalidate previous QSOs. For this reason I chose to continue using my existing database when I changed calls. I did a File, Save as... and called it my new callsign... but it has all the old callsigns QSOs in it) as I migrated from my old to new vanity callsign. I added a QSO with my new callsign - on the date I started using that call. I then marked the QSO as Invalid in the Valid DX field and added a Note for the QSO to remind myself of what happened on that date. I also use that trick [a QSO with myself] for times I make significant changes to my equipment (new rig, new amp, new antenna) so that I can track changes in my gear as they relate to my DX results. ...works for me, although there may be better approaches. [Dx4win] MMTTY
Josep, The answer to you question is both Yes and No. No = the only way to get full cascaded functionality (where double-clicking on a callsign in the MMTTY receive add a new QSO in real-time mode and enter the callsign into the record) is by using the MMTTY back-end engine without full program controls. Yes = you can get partial functionality (such as having the DX4WIN keyboard macros) by connecting the full MMTTY program to DX4WIN using a null modem cable or null modem software (DX4WIN is then talking to MMTTY as a TNC). This requires a more powerful computer than the back-end engine. Depending on your requirements, you may prefer using the partial functionality instead of the full functionality. I wrote an application note in 2004 connecting MMTTY to DX4WIN using a null modem technique, another note on using DX4WIN macros into MMTTY. [Dx4win] log splitting
You need one more step in the process, and it's a little tricky so make sure you have your primary log file backed up before proceeding. 1. Open your primary log (eg. K8UT) 2. Do a File, Save as... to a new name (eg. K8UT 2002) 3. Set a filter for all QSOs _before_ 2002, and then QSO - Multiple QSO Operations - Delete QSOs 4. Set a filter for all QSOs _after_ 2002, and then QSO - Multiple QSO Operations - Delete QSOs 5. You now have a file, K8UT 2002 with only 2002 QSOs in it. 6. Do another File, Save as... to the diskette drive, or just copy the file over. repeat as necessary for each calendar year... A suggestion: if your entire log is too big to fit on one diskette (as a backup -- my log has 20,000 QSOs and is 2 MB in size - too large for a diskette) you can ZIP it (mine gets down to 600kb) or use a USB pen drive (256 MB USB drives are about $10). Is there a way to stop incoming packet spots from changing the band and mode in the QSO window. This is a real pain, I don't have rig control so I don't know it may work better with that but reading Dennis's post maybe not. DX4WIN didn't used to do this ver 5.07 but when I upgraded to 7.01 it now does. I don't know exactly when the change happened. The problem is that you can be working away say 40m CW and end up logging the qso as 20m PSK31 or something unless you remain for ever vigilant. I want the log to follow what I am doing not someone on the other side of the world. The only work around I have found so far other than turning the spots off and clearing all spots from the spot window is to type something quickly into the callsign box then hitting home so that when you start typing a real call you can delete the bogus character ahead of the curser. Sometimes the spot beats you, sometimes I forget to do this. Its not a very good solution and although I don't think I have been caught out it is very likely to cause errors in the log. I have been using DX4WIN for over 5 years now and think it is a fine program and continue to support it. [Dx4win] SyncBack_DX4WIN_BACKUPS
George, Gary has found a feature that I overlooked in SyncBack. When you create a schedule for a profile, there is an Advanced Schedule Options screen on which you can declare the start date and repeat interval for backups. So, you could define a backup to run every day at 00:00, and then tell it to repeat every 5 minutes (or whatever number of minutes you want) for 24 hours. Essentially, this creates a backup that runs every 5 minutes forever! Mark, Although DX4WIN will not auto-connect to a telnet connection, you can modify the DX4WIN.TCP file to life nicer. Using Notepad (or any other text editor), open the file and put your favorite cluster site(s) at the top. Then, when the Select Internet address dialog box opens, the cursor will be positioned on your favorite site and you only have to press the Enter key to proceed. The first three lines of my TCP file look like this -- I added underscores in line 3 to make my two favorites even more obvious in the TCP list. [Dx4win] Re: Correction to Solved with v6.04! Multiple PCI parallel ports...
My apologies to all, but my over-zealous spell-check program renamed the manufacturers of two parallel cards that I have successfully tested with the new software arghhh. Here are the correct titles and a little more detail about each: 1. Dell motherboard LPT port as LPT1 at 0378 - Actually, any computer's LPT1 port should work in native mode - so you already have one LPT port under Windows 2K/ XP without any special configuration. 2. A LAVA parallel card - These cards are slightly more expensive than others, but are true PlugPlay and do not require the installation of custom drivers. 3. A NetMos parallel card - This brand is sold by several retailers on the Internet for about $11, and come with custom drivers on a CD that you will insert into your computer upon installation. 4. A ByteRunner serial/parallel card - These cards have been very popular with DX4WIN clients who use them for additional serial ports, and come with custom drivers on a diskette. Unfortunately, the driver software does not display the virtual memory address under My Computer - Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. You will need a small utility program called VSSHOW.COM (downloadable from several sites on the web or from ByteRunner/VSCOM support). This utility, which must be run from a DOS boot disk (NOT from a Windows, Run, CMD DOS prompt), searches for their card and gives you the LPT address in hex. [Dx4win] Solved with v6.04! Multiple PCI parallel ports under Win2K and WinXP
Thanks to the Paul's efforts (as well as programmers for other products), you can now interface to multiple parallel (LPT) ports under Windows XP and Windows 2000. This means that products like: DX4Win's CW driver, the WaveNode WN-1 wattmeter, band decoders (remote antenna switches) from ON4AOI and TopTen, and the ARSWin rotor interface from EA4TX can all simultaneously interface to PCI parallel ports. The 4 parallel ports that worked properly for me under this new configuration were: 1. Dell motherboard LPT port as LPT1 at 0378 2. A LAVA parallel card 3. A Memos parallel card 4. A Byte serial/parallel card (VSCOM drivers - see note below) I am running DX4WIN with 4 of 5 of the devices listed above, and they all happily coexist using 3 LPT ports in my computer. If anyone has problems with this, I'd be happy to respond to any questions. -larry K8UT The following is a short tutorial for DX4WIN users. If you are using a product from one of the vendors listed above you may also need to configure their programs -- all of them have recently modified their configuration software to accommodate PCI LPT ports. === DESCRIPTION The new PlugPlay features of Windows 2000 and Windows XP has simplified the installation of additional parallel ports by eliminating the need for manual configuration. Unfortunately, this simplification has created complications for computers with parallel ports connected to custom (non-printer) devices like transceivers, CW keying, band decoders, rotors, and wattmeters. As a result, devices connected to the traditional parallel port of LPT1 at memory address 0378(hex) will work properly, but any devices connected to parallel ports LPT2 and LPT3 will not work properly. Version 6.04 of DX4WIN supports these new virtual-memory parallel ports (LPT ports). The DX4WIN604\SAVE directory includes PORTMAP.INI that defines the memory location of virtual-memory parallel cards. For each LPT port (LPT1, LPT2, LPT3) in DX4WIN, the user can define the decimal memory location of the card driver. Here is how to perform that task. CONFIGURATION 1. INSTALL THE PARALLEL CARD - Use the installation instructions from the manufacturer. 2. FIND THE MEMORY LOCATION OF THE CARD - Right-click on My Computer, -Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. Double-click on the LPT port, and on the Resources tab, note the starting memory location (EXAMPLES: LPT1 should be 0378, a motherboard LPT2 should be 0278, virtual-memory LPT addresses will be located much higher in memory with address like DC50). [NOTE: **See special instructions below for finding memory locations for ByteRunner or VSCOM cards.] 3. CONVERT THE HEX MEMORY ADDRESS TO A DECIMAL NUMBER - The number from Device Manager is in hexadecimal, and you must convert that number to decimal format for entry into the PORTMAP.INI file. There are many hex-to-decimal converters on the web ( http://www.ronshardwebapps.com/Numbers.asp ) [EXAMPLES: 0378 hex converts to 888 decimal address, DC50 hex converts to 56400 decimal address) 4. EDIT THE PORTMAP.INI FILE - Using Notepad, navigate to the DX4WIN604\SAVE directory (or wherever you installed DX4WIN) and open the file PORTMAP.INI. Add the decimal address for the appropriate card. (EXAMPLES: LPT1=888, LPT2=56400). Save the file. 5. LAUNCH DX4WIN. Under File Preferences, assign the LPT ports (LPT1, LPT2, LPT3) as required. If you get an error that DX4WIN cannot open the LPT port, you have plugged the wrong address into PORTMAP.INI. **Special instructions below for finding memory locations for ByteRunner or VSCOM cards These cards have been very popular with DX4WIN clients who use them for additional serial and parallel ports. Unfortunately, the driver software included with these cards does not display the virtual memory address under Properties -Hardware -Device Manager -Ports. You will need a small utility program called VSSHOW.COM (downloadable from several sites on the web or from ByteRunner/VSCOM support). This utility, which must be run from a DOS boot disk (NOT from within Windows CMD prompt), searches for their card and gives you the address in hex. =

[Dx4win] Multiple parallel ports with DX4WIN and WindowsXP
I have three auxilliary devices (TopTen Devices antenna switch, ARSWin antenna rotor control, WaveNode remote wattmeter) that connect to my computer via a parallel port. Two of them (TopTen and ARSWin) are controlled via settings in DX4WIN. The computer is a recent model Dell running Windows XP sp2. Unfortunately, DX4WIN ( or the control software that came with these 3 devices ) only functions when the controlled device is connected to LPT1 - the built-in motherboard LPT in the Dell. So -- ALL three devices/software work when I define them as being on LPT1; but NONE of them work when configured for either LPT ports #2 or #3. I have purchased two PCI parallel port cards - the Byte Runner (dual serial, single parallel) and the NetMOS single parallel. I have spent countless hours trying to get these additional parallel ports to resemble legacy parallel ports, with selectable memory addresses. Unfortunately, Windows XP wants to help by intervening with its virtual port addressing... which is what seems to be defeating the software in DX4WIN, ARSWin and WaveNode. My diagnosis is that although the Windows Device Manager reports that these extra ports are on LPT2 or LPT3, they are not at the expected direct memory addresses that the vendors' software expects. If anyone has successfully installed multiple parallel cards under Windows XP, and managed to get DX4WIN (or other software) to connect to those ports, I would love to hear from you. -larry K8UT
[Dx4win] MMTTY
Tom, If you read my documents about hardware and software configurations, you will see references to a dual comm port null modem cable arrangement. If you are running Windows NT or XP, you can replace that mess with a simple piece of free software that functions as a virtual null modem cable. Since writing those instructions, I have settled on a routine in which I use MMTTY in stand-alone mode for day-to-day RTTY operations, and enable the RTTY feature in DX4WIN for contests. Keep in mind, of course, that this setup is a bit of a kludge -- the elegant solution will arrive when Paul inserts true MMTTY integration into DX4WIN -- which he has listed as a future enhancement (no delivery date). -larry K8UT - Original Message - From: Tom Branch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: DX4WIN Reflector Dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, November 19, 2004 11:09 AM Subject: [Dx4win] MMTTY My apologies if this have been hashed out before but I've not been following the group for a while. [Dx4win] Input of logdata from paper log into dx4win
Jeff, I took a two step approach (and have only implemented the first step!). The first step was to examine my QSL collection, go back into my paper logs, and enter every QSO for which I had received a QSL card. (which was not very many - I was not an avid QSL'er then). So, at least I had an accurate count for any awards (DXCC, WAZ, WAS, etc ). The second step (have not done this yet, one of those get around to it projects) is to create an Excel spreadsheet and enter the essential columns from the paper log for each QSO: date, band, mode, time, callsign, RSTs, RSTr, and Note (the ops name if I have it). I figure it will be a lot easier to pull data from the paper logs into a spreadsheet if the spreadsheet resembles the log... line by line for 30 years worth of logs.
