Re: [expert] exporting the local CDROM fails

2002-10-29 Thread hans privat
hi Toshiro,

have tried out now a lot of possibilities like portmap:ALL in
hosts.deny, hosts.allo and vice versa on two hosts of my LAN,
the result is :
entry in rh8-box -> hosts.deny : portmap:ALL -> restart with service nfs
restart - the connected host does NOT have any succes on any exported
filesystem - for shure.

doing the same on mdk - the same - also for shure.

now making that entry in hosts.allow - first in rh8 - all exported
filesystems are available on mdk (for shure restart nfs, and I'm
assuming thart this step I'll always do)

doing the same on mdk :
filesystems on hd's are available on rh8 but NOT CDROM

now I was looking for the entries in /dev/hdc and /dev/hda, /dev/hdb and
here I have :
lr-xr-xr-x
so as you can see, I have the same basics for all relevant drives like
hd and CDROM.

in the README's of hosts.allow and hosts.deny I found the hint, that an
"empty" entry complies with an entry portmap:ALL

and the results was exatly the same :
there is no different on portmap:ALL in hosts.allow or an empty entry.

In hosts.deny the effect is for shure : no portmaps are allowed.

but why do I have a share on hd and NOT on CDROM from my mdk-box ?
but an acces from rh8-box is available with exactly the same fundamentle
basics on both hosts.
So it seems, that any different assumptions or dependencies must be
there. but where and which differents - which possibilities do I have
now - except the steps I have described above ?

any ideas ?
thanks again and bye hans

I had not discoverd this topix since I use digital-tv there it is a lot
easier.
Try these:

- ffmpeg /ffmpeg-server
- mplayer/mencoder
- VLC (Video Lan Client)

And I think there are several other issues. With DVB a PII 300 would be far
enough ( mpeg2 direct from Sattelite, Cable and hardware decoder on-card)

[expert] BUG: drakxconf in Mdk 9.0

2002-10-29 Thread Steffen Barszus
Hi !

I installed Mandrake 9.0 on a computer of our Linux User Group. I have several
issues there, but will post them one by one.

Since there are some newbies there I tried to show them drakxconf. I was
really upset on that tool:

calling drakxconf on commandline I got the following menu:

- Add new users -> working I think
- Boot configuration -> working
- Auto installation -> nothing happens
- Connection sharing -> calls Auto installation
- Display configuration -> calls Connection sharing
.
and so on and so on.

Hope there will be a bugfix-update on that issue. since it is alsmost unusable
in the way it is now.

Thanks in Advance

[expert] adding mirrors for urpmi

2002-10-29 Thread Steffen Barszus
I tried yesterday to add a source for urpmi over the mcc ->
Software-installation panel. I tried several times but it seems the graphical
tool :

- do not accept alternative names of the hdlist-file
- have no comprehensive output for discovering the errors

at least i take the bash and did a urpmi.addmedia ftp://.. with
synthesis.hdlist2.cz and all went fine.

The next was, that I had the opnion 'urpmi -f ftp://...' should work
and make an local hdlist for that source. Maybe I had a typo yesterday, but I
tried today several times without success, so maybe someone can give me a
hint on what I am doing wrong here

Thanks

[expert] mounting of smb-ressources , jints on reading

2002-10-29 Thread Steffen Barszus
Hi There!

A friend of mine has several win2k workstations and one Mdk 9.0 workstation.
Discovering and mounting some directories of the win stations was a task of
seconds. Later that evening we discovered , he was not able of writing to
that dir's.

So I thought this is an easy thing, take a look at the fstab , there will be
somthing like :

//pc1/d/ /mnt/pc1-d/ smbfs -user="xxx",passwd="xxx" 0 0

but after I saw it it was solved another way (something like
.auth.Administrator.dhakhd )

Hope somebody on this list can shed some light on where to read about the
smb-mounting in fstab the Mandrake way, so i am able to discover the error on
his win-network

Thanks in Advance

Just another note on supermount. I am using 8.2 with a self-built kernel
2.4.19-9mdk. Supermount works fine on this system. Perhaps the 2.4.19
kernel in 9.0 is re-broken for supermount. It is generally not the fault of
the distro when supermount goes south, but the kernel developers.

The supermount problem is a recurring problem that shows up periodically with
new kernels. You could get the 2.4.19-9mdk and either build it or install a
binary.

I did about 6 different installations, and I can confirm this bug in

Moreover, drakconf simply doesn't work:

Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from (NULL) pointer to 'GtkObject' at
/usr/sbin/drakconf line 857.
Can't call method "set_active" on an undefined value at
/usr/bin/drakconf line 423.

I don't know, put the poster of the original message could be
dutch-speaking from the email address. In all of my installs, I also use
dutch-belgian locale. Maybe there's possibly an issue?

thanks. I had not seen this on my own install since I did not use it at all.
But after seeing it at the machine there, I tried it here with the same
result, so I dont think its just a fault of my installation. Maybe it depends
on a special modul that is not installed on some systems.

No, I'm german, but maybe the locale thing could be the right direction on
discovering these errors. Maybe some other people do have the same problems?

An strace on drakxservice shows a lot of :

[expert] Help! X11 Memory Leak

2002-10-29 Thread Jeremy Mereness

I'm running MDK 9.0 and the stock nv driver. I have 256 MB RAM so it took
several days before X brought my system to the breaking point.

On my older system with a VESA driver 16-bit color, the X process clocks in at
24 MB (the "size" column in top). On the nv system with 24 bit color, X
begins (!!!) 69 MB! Overnight, it popped up to 77MB, and climbed to 80 over
the half-hour I was working with it. It was up over 200 when it brought my PC
to its knees.

I'm running KDE with a lot of toys (e.g., transparent menus, news ticker) but
they shouldn't send X through the roof, should it? How would I go about
fixing this?

[expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Tim Werner
Hi,

I installed Linux-Mandrake 9.0. Everything went pretty smooth. Selected
Gnome for default desktop. After install, upon reboot got "first-time" (I
think) screen, to do more configuration. This screen was unusable, because
the display was all messed up. I had basically three vertical bands across
the screen: red, green, and blue, I think. On top of that, there was the
first-time screen, but it was all out of sync and mostly unreadable. Also,
I couldn't find the mouse pointer anywhere on the screen, not that there was
really anything to click on. I had to use the cpu reset button to quit the
screen.

Since then, when I boot I go right to desktop, but the screen is still
messed up. The left-hand third of the display is repeated in the middle and
right sides of the screen, and it's kind of wavy and unreadable in places.
On that screen, I was able to find the mouse pointer and get to a menu item
called "action->logoff" (I think that's what it was), but that's all.

I picked all the defaults, except I took 1280x1024, instead of 1600x1200,
for display res.

Has anyone seen this? Where do I go from here? I uninstalled Mandrake, and
will re-install soon, but what do I do different, or if I end up with the
same thing, how do I troubleshoot? The installation guide doesn't seem to
cover my case.

Is there a better place to ask this question?

My system is
motherboard: GVC-VP1541
cpu: AMD-K6P2/350
video: SiS 5598/6326
PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0
monitor: NEC MultiSync FP1370

You probably got gdm/kdm login screen. Sounds like poorly supported
video controller.

You specify the display driver as 5598/6326. Seems to me that 5598 isn't
supported by XFree86-4.2.1, which is the default (right?). However, 9.0
does provide XFree86-3.3.6, which supports them both.

At least Mandrake 8.2 install asked which X version to install when
installing in Expert mode. I haven't checked if this is still the case
with 9.0 installer, but you should try it.

I had many of the same problems and never managed to get the
wlang drivers to work with my Linksys wpc11 card. Binding
the card to orinoco_cs works great with minimal set up and
works with your MA401.

Uninstall wlang
Install the wireless tools package from your distro cd.
Copy the attached hermes.conf file to etc/pcmcia
service pcmcia restart
service network restart
mcc &

Reconfigure your network connections, you should now have
your card detected. You can set the WIRELESS_ options on
one of the configurations panels but they get tossed
whenever you make a subsequent change, so I manually set
them in the ifcfg-ethX file.

To manually set the options edit your
network script:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX (X being your eth
number)

Add the following entries if you need them:

WIRELESS_ESSID="yourAP"
WIRELESS_ENC_KEY="whatever your 128bit key may be"

service network restart

and you should be on your way, hope this helps. Your cards
manfid may be different to the one in my hermes.conf file.
Just run > cardctl ident from the command line to get your
cards specific manfid and edit the hermes.conf file. This
is the only method that >I< have been able to get to work
with my cards and I have tried many a method. If someone
knows exactly how to do this any easier I would love to
know.

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Tim Werner
Mikko,

Thanks for the info. ML9.0 install didn't give me many options -- it seemed
to be making most decisions for me. I was surprised, in fact, that it
installed boot manager with linux as default without even asking. I
couldn't figure out how to change the default OS later, which is why I had
to uninstall.

I'll give it another try, and see if there's some way to pick the X version.
It's a shame they would be dropping support for perfectly good hardware that
isn't that old. :-(

I was running Slackware in '93, on a 486 box, and I liked it a lot, but I
started to get busy with the Windows side and when I got a new system in '98
I didn't want to go through all that pain again, and have been admiring
Linux from afar since then. Mandrake has been getting a lot of good press
about ease of use. I was hoping I wouldn't be spending a lot of time
fiddling with X config files etc., especially since my video card was (I
thought) kind of generic.

It took me two weeks to download 9.0 over my dial-up connection. Don't
think I want to go through that again to get 8.2. :-)

Anyway, I'll give it another shot. Thanks again.

[expert] Help! X and HP Pavilion

2002-10-29 Thread D. R. Evans
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Since I didn't receive any replies one way ot the other about LM 9.0 and
the HP Pavilion 523N, I purchased one yesterday. LM 9.0 sticks when trying
to install X.

The defaults it selects are "1024x768 @ 70Hz" and "vesa". But when the
installation goes to test this configuration the result is:
  (EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
  try to change some parameters

Since the Pavilion came with absolutely zero useful documentation, and
there are an awful lot of parameters one could try (so the "try to change
some parameters" isn't very useful), does anyone have any clue what I do to
get past this step?

My monitor is a 1024x768 flat screen, but choosing that option didn't make
any difference.

If you select the XFree86 3.3.6 instead of 4.2.0 it should work out. In any
case, don't uninstall the whole shebang if you run into a similar glitch in
the future. As long as you can get to a CLI interface then you can at least
try to fix things from there. I HIGHLY recommend that you install pine under
the email clients next time around too. It installs pico as its default
editor which is a MUCH friendlier editor than vi or emacs (text-based). If
you have to fiddle with configs it is much easier to do it in pico than
trying to work out the cryptic commands for vi or emacs. I always install
pine specifically for the sake of pico because it is so easy to use that I
can concentrate on fixing things I might screw up rather than trying to
figure out/learn oddball key combinations for an editor.

Re: [expert] WindowMaker

2002-10-29 Thread Alan Carbutt
Actually, I guess my last post was misleading. I usually do a
re-install and not a by the book upgrade. The only things I didn't
change from 8.2 to 9.0 was /home and /var. Then I had to install from
scratch because I flubbed something in the partition table. In any
case, WindowMaker has been my window manager of choice because it is not
as bloated as other managers. I installed it and I have no trouble with
anything being broken.

Broken on a vanilla Mandrake 9.0. I agree it is not broken on an upgrade.

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Mike Morrell
I find that the VESA driver usually works on XFree4.x
on the unsupported cards. No acceleration though and
not sure if you can go bigger than 1024x768. You can
change your default boot OS by editing the
/etc/lilo.conf file. Change the line with
default=linux to default=windows or whatever the label
is for that partition. See the man page for lilo.conf.
Also, make sure you run lilo from the command prompt
after you edit the file to update the boot sector.
Hope this helps.

Ah! That wasn't the answer, but to find out what chip it uses (since it
sure ain't obvious on the mobo) I went to the HP web site and there saw a
reference to "ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics". So I switched from vesa to
savage, and it now works.

With supermount enabled and a known good floppy formated vfat, as root:

umount /mnt/floppy
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

This works fine here.

If the floppy is not dos you must use use the correct switch with the

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Tim Werner
Mike,

Thanks for the info and advice.

I tried re-installing in expert mode, which allowed me to configure the boot
manager, so that part I'm happy with.

As far as X is concerned, right now it's pretty much a disaster. I tried
all sorts of configurations, and I either get a test screen that doesn't
work, or I get an error message about "no keyboard configured", or other
confusing error, and a suggestion that I should try to change some
parameters.

Any attempt to select XFree3 resulted in suggestion to try some other
parameters. Same thing with attempt to select XFree4 with VESA. Just about
the only config that actually resulted in a test screen was the one with my
actual SiS card (as auto-detected)

[emotional outburst on]
Apparently Xfree is still not ready for prime-time, which is a little
discouraging to me. This really isn't any easier than it was 9 years ago.
>From the mailing list and other linux-centric web sites that I've been
reading, I can tell that a lot of other people are at least able to get the
desktop up and running. I really expected to get past this point before I
started running into trouble. :-(
[emotional outburst off]

Not sure where to turn at this point. I seem to have a combination of bad X
support for my video card, and Mandrake X-configuration bugs. Probably I'll
have to wait until broadband becomes available in my area and try redhat or
else the next rev of mandrake. Maybe after a nap things will seem different
and I'll try something else.

this is the line todd:
/usr/share/rpm-helper/add-user openssh $1 sshd /var/empty /bin/true
the add-user usage says that $1 is the 'num installed', can you explain that
to me and expand on the /bin/true point that james raised?
i figure that something is substituted for the $1 but i don't know what and
thus the line doesn't do anything as it is

I've checked on 4 different machines, of which 2 laptops with fresh 9.0
installs and the 2 desktops were 8.2 upgrades..drak(x)conf works fine on
all of them.

Admittedly I am Dutch but don't have/use Dutch (or any other) locales so
indeed that might be the direction to search:o)

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Mike Morrell
I agree that XFree is still not as bullet proof as it
should be. This is probably mostly due to the lack of
card/chipset data from the video card makers as well
as just the pure difficulty in writing drivers. There
are lots of cards that are working well and I would
suggest to anyone that wants to try Linux that they
check into hardware support and stick with the most
popular mainstream hardware because that gets the most
attention from developers and testers. I know this
does not help you. Sorry. If you still need help and
you can manage a command line, I suggest that you post
your xfree log file here. Maybe we can give you some
hints.

RE: [expert] Display messed up after install

2002-10-29 Thread Tim Werner
Mike,

Thanks for your encouragement. I would indeed like to spend more time on
this if I can get some help with it.

I had to return the video card on my first PC system (it was a Diamond
Viper) for an ATI Mach32, for just the reason that Diamond considered their
specs to be proprietary and thus no one could write a linux driver for it.
At the time, I sent the Diamond people an email letting them know that I had
to return their card because they couldn't be supported by linux. I'm sure
they couldn't have cared less; I never heard back from them.

It always irked me that the Mach32 card wasn't quite as snappy under Win3.1
as the Viper card, but at the time I felt the little sacrifice in Windows
performance was worth it, because I was running Unix at home!

I'd forgotten all that. Now you mention it, I have to admit the situation
hasn't really changed.

At any rate, if you could tell me how to generate it, I'd be happy to post
the xfree log file here. I have been able to log in as root without
starting X, and can do ls and cd commands, but that's all I remember, so
far.

Thanks,
Tim

Supermount is not a part of the Linus released kernel. Mandrake is the
only distro that adds the supermount patch to the kernel.

And I agree that somewhere around -14mdk or -15mdk, supermount received
some changes that resulted in more drives having problems. A good case
in point is the fact that you have -9mdk and it's working well for you.

I did the following:

service sshd stop
rpm -e openssh-server
rpm -ivvh /path/to/openssh-server*

In the resulting output I found:

D: install: running %pre script(s) (if any)
+ /usr/share/rpm-helper/add-user openssh 1 sshd /var/empty /bin/true

That gets run before any files get installed. %pre is a pre-install
script). Then further down, I found:

D: install: running %post script(s) (if any)
+ /usr/share/rpm-helper/add-service openssh 1 sshd

This adds the ssh service to the init scripts locations (symlinks to
control starting/stopping at runlevel changes). %post is a post-install
script.

In this case, it's probably easier for you to just delete the rpm then
reinstall it.

[expert] HP Pavilion and hibernation

Dear Experts

I was able to build my own 2.4.19-16mdk kernel with ACPI and also got
the 2.4.19-17mdk kernel to work, however the ACPI S3 option knocks out
the system and I will have to restart (with lots of fsck happening, of
course).

So my question is if anybody has got hibernation to work on a HP
Pavilion Z1000 series laptop.

I am dying to not have to boot into XP anymore, so please throw me a
bone here ... :>)

Wait another 30 minutes. There's a big difference between blanking and
powering down. If you're using KDE, go into the KDE Control Center and
look in PowerControl->DisplayPowerControl. Feel free to adjust them to

[expert] Snort not successfully raising eth0 to promisc, kernlog says it is.

2002-10-29 Thread Eli Stair
I'm just noticing that when I run Snort the interface I have specified in
the config file to listen on isn't actually entering promiscuous mode.
The log says that it is, however ifconfig shows differently. I can
manually bring it up with ifconfig eth0 promisc, and drop it the same
way.

I don't understand what's going on behind the scenes with this. If there
kernlog is saying it changes state, it obviously thinks it did but why?
And the obvious question is how to fix this so it works according to plan...

I have the same chip in my HP1210 laptop. Mandrake 9.0 autodetected the chip,
but not the display; the generic 1024x768 LCD display works fine. No 3D

the problem with my workstation.

Actually, 3 miles can make all the difference in the world, depending what is between
you and the end of that three miles. You could also have noise on your line. Chances
are the phone company would come out and test it and it would be fine as most only
guarantee 9,600baud. Since your modem connects normally at your friend's house,
sounds like the problem is in the wiring at your house.

Never mind, this turned out to be a hardware problem -- most likely the
connectors were not seated properly.
Sorry for that,

Narfi.

[expert] need help to configure X

2002-10-29 Thread Tim Werner
Hi,

I'm still trying to get my PCI SiS 5598/6326 video card to work on ML9.0.

Yesterday Mike suggested that I configure it as 'vesa', but from the X
Configuration install step, that selection is only available under XFree-4.
I tried it anyway, and got the following errors:
(EE) no core pointer device specified
(EE) Unable to determine the screen layout

I also tried choosing XFree-3 server SVGA, and got the error
 Config error /etc/X11/F86COnfig.test:10

I also booted into console mode and ran xf86config. I think I entered the
right numbers, but couldn't figure out how to get XFree-3 to run. Startx
seems to run XFree-4, and I get the same errors (no core pointer, etc.) as
when I tried to configure at install time.

Can anyone 'splain to me how to configure X to let me use the card
generically? This is frustrating, since I really only need the same kind of
resolution that the install program has. Everything looks hunky-dory until
I configure X. How do I get X to use the same video mode as the
installation program?

I found a framebuffer HOWTO that seems to list my card as VESA 2.0
compliant, but I don't understand how to use the info in the document to
make a xconfig file, or to pick the right arguments for startx.

Thanks,
Tim

[expert] Completely OT - to the sys admins, is there a "spammer's" blacklistfor child pornography?

2002-10-29 Thread Gabriel Phoenix
There is quite a bit of expertise in this group and I would like to call
upon it to help with this particular problem.

Hey I like pOrn like the next guy but we are talking about kids (3-9).
When you have spread eagle shots it is sexual exploitation, period.

This is on the ngs and it was even off topic. Someone complained to
original poster ISP so no doubt they were TOS. So what?

I have sent out the complaints to some of pornography watchdog groups
but I am wonder what does it take to get the job done?

Yea, I know like pulling weeds, yank one and two more appear but I would
like to know how to pull the weeds properly in the first place.

Yea, I know international law and jurisdiction, not to mention
enforcement.

Yea, I know you cannot police the electronic wild west.

What I want to know is how to get the complaints to the right person.
There is the official way, the political way, but usually you go ask a
sysop for the right way. :)

The site in question is www.k-book.ws, which is a portal site. Who the
hell administers the ws domain anyway? A few of the whois lookup sites
came up blank. I came across it three weeks after the original post and
it is still there.

Right now I am interested in the second site, still active
http://www.nifty-star.com/ We are talking kids.

Versign gives a registrar in Andorra? Who knew there was a small country
between France and Spain. That is not much help.

One question I have is how do you track down the service provider of a
site. That is, the actually place the files are being stored? This way I
can try to contact the authorities in question.

I know about the spammer's blacklist, so I was wondering is there an
unofficial blacklist for things like child pornography?

Any help would be appreciated.

Gabriel
