If there are problems with the intestines (vomiting, constipation, slow moving
stools, stools of large diameters, all of which might be indicative of the
effect of the virus on the intestines) you can try adding ¼ tablet of
apometocloprimide.

If the haematocrit level is REALLY REALLY low – like below 5-8, you might
consider starting the Winstrol at 2 mg twice a day for a week, to try and
kickstart things quickly, but given that there is going to be a likely increase
in liver enzymes with the use of Winstrol, recognize that this might also
increase the liver enzymes faster.

Hope this helps!

I hope you got some good news today. However, as you know, my experience is
that the Winstrol needs to be used long term before the red cells are back into
the normal range. I continue to recommend use of the Doxycyline to interfere
with viral RNA synthesis. The Winstrol does not attack the virus, though I
believe it makes the cat stronger overall and able to fight back. But at the
outset of the treatment regime, I believe you must have the Doxycycline on
board to try and reduce the viral load, or at least, keep it from rising.

Hi Elizabeth,
I had commented a couple of times on your Facebook posts on the Felv+ Owners
page.
How has your cat been feeling since the transfusion? Has he been able to
sustain any energy, appetite and such after his transfusion?
I am glad you found this board. I was given very good info here after Bogey was
diagnosed. Her IFA was positive and so her bone marrow is affected. Her RBC was
13 when I took her in. She had stopped playing, eating and was sleeping all the
time. After being on the Prednisone her appetite rebounded. They also put her
on an antibiotic that we have since stopped at the vets urging and added
Stanzolol 2mg once a day. She goes back in tomorrow to see if her counts are
better and I think they will be. Her gums are more pink, playing some and
eating good. I am certain though that she is still quite anemic. We just need
to show improvement with this treatment. I find myself saying all day today
"Please be higher".
My point being they can rebound from the anemia. I don't know for how long but
I am going to give my cat the best chance at life that I can as I am sure you
will and everyone else on this board does. Some cats can live a long time with
FELV and some just cannot. I wish us all the best of luck.

Hi everyone,

Looking for support, suggestions, and information. I've never had a cat with
FeLV. We took our 1 year old, Hodor, to the vet because he seemed lethargic and
in his stool there was a piece of floss that was red. At the vet things
escalated and they told us he was severely anemic and would need a transfusion
that day. I took off work and rushed him to a specialist. The vet there told us
she would run an FeLV test before doing anything in case we wanted to avoid the
extra tests and procedures. She told us he was FeLV positive and persistently
talked to me and my fiance about euthanizing him which was out of the question
for us. I took him to the vet thinking it was going to be minor and then she's
talking to me about killing him! We went forward with the blood transfusion.
It's been almost 3 weeks now. They had him on doxycycline in case there was a
bacterial cause, and prednisone. Last week he started interferon... Does anyone
have experience with that and know if it was effective? I also started him on
Pet Tinic. Any other suggestions? Any insight into whether you think he will
be able to pull through? He doesn't have cancer, they ran the tests but don't
know if it's in the bone marrow. I'm scared. We have another one year old,
unrelated, and they are best friends. It breaks my heart to think they might be
separated. She's not FeLV positive.

Additionally I have set up a go fund me to help with the costs we incurred, and
I want to donate half to FeLV research if anyone is interested.

2016-09-16 Thread Amani Oakley
 – more than 10 times the recommended daily dose for cats.
That’s the only study which has found this supposed link between Winstrol and
liver damage. And even in that study, with those remarkably ridiculous doses,
the cats in that study only had elevated liver enzymes (no tumours, etc.) and
the liver enzymes dropped back to normal levels when the Winstrol was
discontinued. This is consistent with my experience as well. I refused to stop
the Winstrol for my cat, when the enzymes went up, because he was going to die
with the low red cell count he had. I kept him on Winstrol for around 10
months, before the red cells were in a normal range. During that ten month
period, I would wean him down a few times, but ALWAYS the red cells would
immediately drop again, so it was more than clear that it was the Winstrol
making the numbers rise. So, in the end, he had Winstrol pretty much for the
duration of 10 months and his liver enzymes went right back to normal again,
once I discontinued the Winstrol – NO lasting damage. This was also my
experience with a second cat with a nasal sarcoma, and where I used the
Winstrol to keep her appetite up and reduce the swelling (she was 16). The
enzymes went quite high at the outset of my use of Winstrol, but went back to
normal when I weaned her off for a bit and then again when I ultimately took
her off the Winstrol.

Get the Winstrol if you can, and use it in combination with the prednisone
(which I am told also helps to protect the liver when the Winstrol is used) and
Doxycycline.

Good for you for not listening to the euthanasia nonsense.  Doxycycline is used in case the anemia is being caused by Hemobartonellosis (Hemobart for short).  But you said there was a piece of floss in his stool.  Floss can do all kinds of nasty stuff to a kitty's intestines.  He could have lost blood because of that.  Testing positive for FeLV is unfortunate, because now vets can focus on this instead of looking at the complete picture.  Some kitties can live for several years after testing positive, so do not give up hope.  How long have the 2 cats been best friends?  If the other cat has tested negative, it may very well be that she has a strong enough immune system.  Separating them now may only cause undue stress, which you don't want to do.  Concentrate on increasing the immune system, keeping them well fed & happy.  We never really know how long we have with them - whether they test positive or not...  I'm sure others will chime in here too.

[Felvtalk] My baby boy Spatz

2009-04-14 Thread griscome
Hello, I'm hoping someone here can give us some information or insight.
Our little tuxedo boy is 8 years old and has been healthy until recently.? He
started hiding out and just not acting his usual sweet self, so we took him to
the doc.? He was given antibiotics for a week and still not well - better, but
not well.? His blood tests showed severe anemia..so blood transfusion, more
antibiotics and prednisone.? We were sent to a specialist, who tested and got a
weak positve for FELV.? Retest showed positive, so now we're struggling with
whether to try interferon (our vet has not had good results) or LTCI (Imulan).?
Does anyone have feedback regarding LTCI?? We're willing to try it, but don't
want to make our boy go through more injections if the outcome is just
survival, we want him to have a good life, you know?
The weird thing is, he has had the FELV vaccines, and tested negative in 2004.?
Our other boy is 12 years old and negative, but we hate keeping them apart.?
I'm so glad I found this forum, I'm just torn up about what to do next and felt
there was nowhere to turn.
Thank you all!

I have to tell you guys about BooBoo's new regime. It involves taking him out
in the patio twice a day for fresh air and nature. He's really enjoying it.
He watches and listens to the birds for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I
think it does him a world of good. Today he walked into the living room after
his outdoor adventure, which is unusual, and was waving his tail in Lennie's
face who was sleeping on the sofa. This woke Len up who just stared at him.
Then Bob was feeding Len some silly cat treats and BooBoo who usually cowers
from him, got up marched right over to Len and hissed at him. Totally out of
character. Lennie who in his day would lay ruin to any animal who entered his
yard just left and went back to bed. On the way to the stairs Boo tore the
hell out of the bottom stair carpet and boinged upstairs. I had brought his
food up but he literally threw himself down in front of it, put his head
between his paws and sulked until Bob came up and encouraged him to eat. It's
getting ridiculous. He wants both of us to feed him and stay with him til he's
done. So far the Lasix seems to be keeping the fluid under control and he's
breathing normally.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

I have to tell you guys about BooBoo's new regime. It involves taking
him out in the patio twice a day for fresh air and nature. He's really
enjoying it. He watches and listens to the birds for about 10 to 15
minutes at a time. I think it does him a world of good. Today he
walked into the living room after his outdoor adventure, which is
unusual, and was waving his tail in Lennie's face who was sleeping on

Re: MeMe and My baby Sammy

2007-06-27 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
This didn't go thru the way it should have--sounds like cats on the
keyboard. What I did after I cut the little ant-size garage doors
in the sides of the shoebox lid was place two ant baits under the lid
and top it off with several folded newspapers to keep the top stable
and hide it from interested little felines. Works like a charm and
ants were gone in two or three days.

Oh--and, I'm back. I had a hairy three weeks dealing with billi bi's
FLUTD, including reconstructive and cosmetic surgery (the new norm!)
for his little peepee, poor guy, and now, Sammy went out of the
remission he was in since after the week he began his chemotherapy.
So he is on rescue protocol started Monday and has snapped out of it
and is back to normal but this is apparently the shitty endgame. The
doc has given him a max of two months. I hate this crap so much!
I've called an animal healer.

The good news is he will celebrate his very first birthday (for three
whole days: June 29th, 30th and July 1st, when they were found by a
lady's retriever who carefully retrieved them from under her back
porch, with his brothers Charlie and Teddy. I just hate this crying
all the time, though.

Those things are all in the basement in backs of cupboards with old
sliding doors that even I have trouble with. I just figured out
how to hide ant traps when you can't hide 'em in the backs of base
cabinets. I took a shoebox lid and cut very small (about 1/2
wide) ant-size years from getting curious and they completely
ignore it--but the ants don't--and now those stupid ants are GONE!
And, brother, it has been ant season big time this year! YAY!

Oh, dear MeMe with the wonderful name! You WILL get rid of the
giardia. Just be careful not to drink out of any glasses or mugs
she has put her paw into. That's how I got giardia! I remember
thinking, oh how cute! And later drinking out of that glass and a
week or two later, bingo! I later told my vet and the head vet
tech and, boy, did they laugh! If you DO get it it'll go away
eventually if you're healthy.

~~Oh, ack! Lilibet just jumped up on my desk to show me--a roach
from the basement! She is so pleased! I thought I heard her
delicate little voice! She's the one who taught the Three Orange
Boys how to kill their prey by bringing them various bugs she
would catch. So she's taken it to them and they're very happy,
too. I don't mind roaches--except that they're IN MY (mother's)
BASEMENT! Ick! I thought I could get 'em with those roach things
you hide around in the backs of cupboards, but NO! Crap! She
actually just brought it to me again and it wasn't looking so good
by then--so proud!--and then took it back to the babies a second
time. Very exciting early AM here!~~

Lilibet also has a runny eye, which, of course, she arrived with.
Sometimes it runs and sometimes she sneezes.

I think MeMe's wellness program is working! If you google purring
or cats purring you'l eventually find info on the healing power of
purring! Pretty neat stuff!

Oh--and you know what else? She knows she's sick but she also
knows she loves you and you love her and that's stronger than any
sickness.

Love from the cats over here! And me, too.

I had to let Olive free fromher body this morning -- she seemed to be in so much
pain from the emergency clinic trip, since last night, she has had
seizures almost every 15 minu or so last nigth even after valium and I couldn't
let her continue that way.. I usually have a very difficult time to help assist
them cross any of my kitties, because I
can't let go of them. and I never know what they
want for sure.. but this time,, it was very difficult to see Olive go
through the seizures so many times as she seemed to be in so mcuh pain..it seems very selfish of me to let her be how she
was.. I had someone come over and assisted her crossa little while ago-- of course, I have so much
gult now and don't know what to do with the
feeling.. though logically, I could convince myself that I did a right
thing.. i just don't feel right and I have a regret already -- I am
feeling numb right now at the same time, I am feeling awful about what i
did..
I was talking to dr.
Addie from University of glagslow who has done research for FIP for the past two
decades, and she was explaining to me how FIP is the disease that we human
create by domesticating our kitties and keeping them indoor -- please don't get
me wrong.. she was not suggesting that keeping cats indoor was a bad thing.. but
there is a price to pay when you have multiple of animals in the house.. as
feces from litter box is the most common way to get the corona virus and as they
shed from feces -- and out in wild, FIP is much less common due to the fact that
they don't use litter boxes obviously... and that's what I meant when I produced
the disease and not separating them in a small group.. There are a few
people on FIP support list who have lost several of their kitties to FIP --- it
can be sproadic and usually is.. but sometimes, it's epidemic.. and when it
happens it's very scary..as you already know..
I am so afraid
thinking what's now, what's next -- as I am trying not to create a problem
before it even happens.. but you just have to understand.. my Oliver was just
fine (or at least I thought which was my very bad) until last night.. it seemed
progressed so quickly and never seen anything like it...
Everyone, prlease pray
that my olive is at peace and feel free andmy Dharma, Naomi and Peter are
greeting at her at the rainbow bridge..

with your recent losses. You know
rationally that you have done everything you could to give your kitties a few
months or perhaps years of a happy and secure and loved life, so please dont
let yourself feel guilty for any decision youve made. Your intentions were and are (as are all

It depends on what is causing the anemia. If it is either an auto-immune
reaction or lymphoma in the bone marrow, steroids should help (though a stronger
steroid like dexamethasone would help more, probably). If it is leukemia
the cancer it might help also. It probably will not help for any other
cause of anemia.

Hideyo,
I am doing your visualization, it did really seem to help Dharma last time.

In fact, thanks to you, I do that visualization with Bea and Satch all the time now, even though they are doing well, as a preventative and it helps to keep me positive.

I'll close my eyes and do this for Dharma all the time.

Hideyo, sending prayers. If she is anemic, wouldn't that be a sign that she

Actually, anemia is one of the common
symptoms of FIP as well, usually mild anemia, but as the condition gets worse
their PCV could drop.. both of my Naomi and Peter were mildly anemic when they
were first diagnosed, but Naomi got more anemic I hate anemia
its too frustrating there arent many I can do
though I know she is not at a point where she needs transfusion yet.. but if
needed, I would try it, and would also try epogen.. I called about Acemanna
again as you suggested when I was having a problem with Tsubomi
unfortunately its still discontinued temporarily..

Presisolone is one of the treatments
suggested for FIP havent used yet as FIP is auto immune
disease, their own immune system attack their body.. I have been giving her
moducare as immune balancer.

Hi Hideyo,

Athena and Artemis are doing great. They are about 1 1/2 years old now
and you'd swear Athena can see just as well as her sister - she gets into
just as much mischief as Artemis does. They are so cute. I haven't mixed
them with the rest of the household, so they get to hang out in my study
and sun themselves in the south facing window while I'm at work. My
digital camera gave up the ghost last year and I'm leaving hints with my

Acemanan availability (was need prayers for my baby Dharma again pleease!!)

2006-10-25 Thread Nina

You know, I was just thinking that perhaps there might be a way to get
special dispensations the way we do for feline interferon.  Or, perhaps
it's sold in a different country that we could order from.  Has anyone
looked in to it's availability somewhere besides the US?  Has anyone
contacted the company that distributes it or produces it to find out?
Don't get me started on how "disturbing" it is to be "protected" by our
government agencies.

It's definitely worth checking into. I've been googling here - the
scientific name of this product is acetylated mannans.
The injectable form of it is manufactured and marketed by Carrington
Laboratories as Acemannan Immunostimulant ™ . Veterinary Products
Laboratories sells the product for veterinary application but I'm
wondering if it is available outside this milieux. I personally would like
to talk directlyto the person who made the decision to withhold it from
the market and hear their justification and why it is taking such an
extraordinary amount of time. Their claim was that they were auditing it
-- but I would also like to know their definition of audit.

Ifind it odd that wound dressingscontaining acemannan in gel
form are still available.

News from Carrington
Laboratories

Makes me wonder if there is a way to process one of these powdered forms to
come up with the injectable formula. It isn't as though we would be
selling it under another trade name.

I'm going to be slammed at work tomorrow but if I do get a chance - I will
call this man.

I personally would
like to talk directlyto the person who made the decision to withhold it
from the market and hear their justification and why it is taking such an
extraordinary amount of time. Their claim was that they were auditing it
-- but I would also like to know their definition of audit.

Ifind it odd that wound dressingscontaining acemannan in gel
  form are still available.

Hideyo,
some people on this list have reversed severe anemia in positives
with a few abdominal injections of acemannan. Have you considered this?

Thank you michelle, I was hoping that you
would respond to me she is on carafate already, but since she is no longer
vomiting or having bloody stools, I dont think she has an internal bleeding..
I dont know.. I did read when a cat is severe anemia, they will vomit blood
and have bloody stools as blood get too concentrated and I feel that thats
what happened

She no longer has high fever again I am
giving her interferon right now

I have given epogen and predisolone also
but again,, I am just not sure I may give her lasix as she has a bit
difficult time breathing after she moves around or get streesed out.

Hideyo, it sounds like she is anemic from
losing blood, which means that no medicine is going to help her unless it stops
the bleeding. If she has a bleeding ulcer, she should be given Carafate, which
is a medicine that seals up ulcers. Prednisone can make ulcers
worse. If she has a bleeding tumor, nothing will help unless the tumor
stops bleeding, which sometimes happens.

I would ask for Carafate and maybe do an
ultrasound. Some vets can do an edoscapy, which is a scope that does not
cut into the body at all, and they need only light anesthesia for it.

The fever can come from having a reaction
to the transfusion. Did they give her a benadryl shot? The hospital that did
Simon's transfusions gave him one prophylactically before each transfusion I
think.

Well - I talked to three vets and they
feel that I am doing everything I can for her right now and they don’t
have any other suggestions and she gets really stressed out and I am not
wanting to put her through --- epogen, interferon, and steroid, lasix –
they have been all suggested by at least one of them – but her being felk
– they are basically attributing her symptoms to the illness and
they are very skeptical – so in a way, I am on my own –it’s sort of up to
me to try what I thnk it will help her – though I know that she is losing
blood or have perhaps now fluid in heart as she has a hard time breathing
after she moves around ---they took exray on her Friday though they did
not see any fluid in her chest , but a little in her tummy (not so much)
and that’s why my vet suggested lasix – I am not again wanting her to go
through the stress of ultrasound as they may not find anything for sure
anyway – (and they did not see any mass through extray) – I feel that she
is losing blood as she seems pale and as I understand there is NOTHING I
can do about it – except I try epogen to see if it works for her.. I will
see if I can get acemannan –as it was on hold by the government a couple
of months ago ---

This may be off the wall...but I posted an article from a vet on his opinion
that Sam E or Denosyl for cats and dogs aside from assisting the liver
preserves the RBC and really helps with Anemia, It can be purchased most
places, My cat is on it, It is only a pill,,,do not crush and needs to be given
on an empty stomach,,,2-3 hours before and after mealsI will find the
article and send it again to you.

Re: My baby Tsubomi is in trouble - please help!

2006-10-07 Thread Lernermichelle

Hideyo, it sounds like she is anemic from losing blood, which means that no
medicine is going to help her unless it stops the bleeding. If she has a
bleeding ulcer, she should be given Carafate, which is a medicine that seals up
ulcers. Prednisone can make ulcers worse. If she has a bleeding
tumor, nothing will help unless the tumor stops bleeding, which sometimes
happens.

I would ask for Carafate and maybe do an ultrasound. Some vets can do
an edoscapy, which is a scope that does not cut into the body at all, and they
need only light anesthesia for it.

The fever can come from having a reaction to the transfusion. Did they give
her a benadryl shot? The hospital that did Simon's transfusions gave him one
prophylactically before each transfusion I think.

Re: my baby crackers

2006-09-05 Thread catatonya
Had you ever had Crackers tested previously? Was he vaccinated? I think it's highly unlikely Crackers got leukemia from Pokemon. Was Pokeman ever tested? I don't think you should blame yourself for bringing Pokemon in, and I doubt that is how Crackers got felv.If Crackers does have felv he sounds very healthy and could live a very long life. You'll get lots of good advice from this list. tonya[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: About last Oct. we found Pokemon at our local park. She had a pink collor on and was so tame and lovable. But she was skinny. I thought I was doing an excellent thing
bringing her home and my son 4 and niece 9 wouldn't have it any other way. She seemed to gain weight when she got here. She was small so i thought she was still a kitten about 4-5 months. Well a few weeks ago Pokemon started "coughing" she got into the basement and had insulation on her nose. So when the coughing was still going on but not as bad I thought she must have sniffed some insulation. Last Monday her breathing semed like a deep hard breathing and she was always so skinny i didn't notice a weight lost. I went down into the basment i live in a triplex...i found rat poisoning in a corner on a shelf. I rushed her to my local animal hospital and they told me that she needed emergency care...so we drove to unniversity of penn animal emergency hospital. They took her right in. I was thinking oh no rat poisoning..we dont even have mice here. Well finally after getting half assed answers and them saying it could be this or that...she told me that Pokemon had an abundancy
of fluided in her lungs and finally was told that she had lyphomia and that they estimated Pokemon to be between 5-7 yrs old based on teeth and kidney size. To do the full tests and amit her to the ICU unit would be between $6000-$8000 estimate and we needed to put $1300 down. And they were so kind to let us have 5 mins to decide. Also the dr. said that this lyphomia could have been from Feline Aids or Feline Luekemia and that Cracks may have been affected. Now my mind was shot. I decided to euthanize her when they said she was so sick that they also believed she had this for awhile and was little hope. Ok on to Crackers. On the way home from putting Pokemon to sleep I immediately called my vet to get Crackers tested for FIV AND The luekemia. That was Tuesday and today is Saturday. Last nite Friday cracker had his appointment the dr said looks like he will be negative for both but we still have about 2 mins. Well he said oh we do have a positive. As my heart dropped he got
his book and said feline luekemia. The dot that registared was a little very lite blue dot. I told him to send out the other ultra violet test. They should be back Sun morning and with the holiday if not sun then Mon. He said Crackers looked very Healthy and strong. I asked him over and over being in shock if there were false positives and he said that the test didn't have any. Here is a little of Crackers history: he is my big baby 18.6 lbs..he has NEVER been sick ever...no colds nothing and he only had diareahha 1 day when he was a yr old. He is very loving and happy..has never been outside except when he would run out and i was right after him. That he grew out of. He has a hearty appetite. I leave out food and fresh water 24-7 for him. He lives a very stress free life and is a LOVER boy he loves to purr and be rubbed. I am willing to do anything in the world for him and i will. I am open to all and all suggestions. And all I can remember is that the 1st month pokemon
came they would fight and he did have a bite mark that bleed..he is all white. So i know he suffered a deep wound puncture for her. What kills me is how dense I was. I based Pokemon like a book by its cover. She was beautiful and so sweet I NEVER realized i should of had her tested and never brought her near my baby. I will never be able to forgive myself for Cracker being a positive Feline Leukemia. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi,

My name is Wendy. I've been on this site for about 10
months now and have learned so much. My FeLV+ passed
away, but it was so late when I found this group,
there wasn't enough time to save him. I think that
Crackers has a much better chance.

I'm sorry to hear about Pokemon. I find, however,
that things happen for a reason, and you did the right
thing by loving Pokemon. You didn't know about the
risks of taking her in, so please don't beat yourself
up. So many of us here have exposed our kitties by
unknowingly taking in an FeLV+ before we were educated
on FeLV. I exposed three others by taking in Cricket,
my FeLV+. They are all negative.

Everyone has posted great info. so far for you. One
thing I didn't see was how old Crackers was. That is
important. If he is older, then it is harder for him
to contract FeLV, as Chris said. Or rather, easier
for him to throw it off if exposed. From our
experiences here, adults almost never contract FeLV.
It's the kittens that contract it permanently. So I
wouldn't worry too much until you test and retest.
The only thing that might be a problem is that Pokemon
and Crackers were fighting and the veterinary
community doesn't know enough about this virus to know
if indirect exposure (sharing water bowls, grooming)
versus direct exposure (introducing the virus directly
to the bloodstream) plays a part in throwing off this
virus. It could. In the meantime, I would change
Cracker's diet, as Phaewryn pointed out. I feed mine
Innova. You can't get the good stuff at a grocery or
discount store, nor can you get it at Petsmart or
Petco (although you can buy Eukanueba there, but it's
not good food either, imo.) Also, vitamin C and
L-lyine (without propyline glycol) are good immune
supplements. The other big thing is to keep Crackers
stress-free. I would also find another vet. One that
does not feel euthanasia is the only option with FeLV+
kitties. One that is educated. You can figure this
out by calling different vets in the area and speaking
with them directly about their philosophy on treating
FeLV+'s. You'll get a good feel for a vet this way.
Your vet was wrong about the test not having any false
positives.

Try not to freak out too much. We all love our
furbabies dearly here, and you have found a good place
to be while dealing with this. It's a great source of
support. If you'd like, I can email you a sick and
regular care kitty manual that I compiled. I can't
attach it to these postings, but I can send it to you
directly if you'd like. It's got a lot of info. in
it. Please keep us posted on your kitty's diagnosis,
etc.

:)
Wendy
Dallas, Tx

P.S. I think $6000-8000 for treatment for Pokemon is
RIDICULOUS Just ludicrous!!! And I don't
necessarily agree with their diagnosis and what they
said should be done. I wouldn't go there again if you
can avoid it.

Its tough to find a vet
who has a realistic attitude about FELV. My first vet, who was wonderful,
was upfront with me when my Tucson tested pos. He told me that he had very little experience
with FELV. I found a second vet who coincidentally is the vet for a local
rescuer who takes in FELV cats and hes been great. Never batted an
eyelash when I talked to him about mixing; never treated Tucson any differently.
She has a tendency to develop low white blood count he gives her
immuno-regulin when that happens. Outside or that, we do nothing special.

I changed all their foodthey were
all indoor cats a couple of them, including Tucson, got to be real
porkos! I give them Wellness wet food and eliminated most of the dry
food. There are different foods out there and I know people will give you
ideas. Since switching, one of my cats has lost weight and Tucson, well shes lost a
bit but its tough with the feline vacumn cleaner!

The thing about food is that some of this
food can be pretty pricey You sort of have to balance
things. Keep in mind that they dont eat quite as much of the
better quality food as some of the cheaper brand I order Wellness
online from The Hungry Puppy in NJ even though theres shipping
charge, it still comes out cheaper than other places. One can goes a long
way even with all 5 of them They tend to eat smaller portions.

However, not everybody can do that so you
shouldnt feel that you have to spend a fortune on food. You can
always mix foods with home made sort of---boiled chicken or boiled any meat cut
up in little pieces. All my cats like one veg or another they love
eggs cheese. Theres a brand called Figaro and once in a
while I throw in a can as its just tuna veggies. Basically, I try
to give them a balanced diet, to stay away from stuff that fills them but doesnt
give them nutrition, and to vary things a bit just so they dont get into
a I dont like that cat food anymore mood!

Thats just my way of doing it-

Where do you buy your cat food? If it's the grocery
store, that's the first problem you have to solve. You need to get a phone
book, and look up a pet supply store in your area. Once you find one, go to the
store, and pick up a bag of cat food, flip it over, and read the ingredients
(don't even bother reading anything that's sold in a grocery store, it's all
crap). If it doesn't have MEAT as the first (and preferably the first two)
ingredients, put it back on the shelf and move on to the next food down. Do this
until you find one that DOES have MEAT as the first ingredient. At the same
time, you can also look for corn in the ingredients, and try to avoid those
too. What you can afford will ultimately tell you how far you can go in buying
the best food you can. I personally recommend California Natural or Innova (or
Healthwise, for budget-minded people). But there are other good brands too.
Others will make brand suggestions, I'm sure. OR, just search our archives,
this has been discussed many times in the past on this list. A few other good
brands: Chicken Soup, Felidae, Natural Balance, Newman's Own, Pinnacle, Premium
Edge Kitten,
Wellness, Wysong Archetype Diet, (Eukanuba is an
acceptable food is nothing better can be found locally, better than what's sold
in grocery stores). Some brands carry several products in their lines. Some are
better than others, for example, Premium Edge CAT food is not good, but their
KITTEN food is. Wysong's feline diet is not good, but their archetype diet is
good. Etc.. Other brands will have good first 2 or three ingredients, but if
you keep reading it just gets crazy as you go down the list of ingredients, for
example, MANY otherwise good premium cat foods (with meat as the first 2
ingredients and no corn) add garlic, blueberries, and all kinds of other crazy
nonsense to their foods. I don't recommend those, simply because they are MORE
likely to cause allergies, and garlic is not safe to feed cats at all, I
recently learned on this list. Not sure why otherwise good cat foods add
something so dangerous to their products, lack of education, I suppose.
Anyways, point is, read carefully. There should be NO onion, garlic, or corn,
and preferably not a lot of fruit and veggies, as cats are carnivores. Also,
herbs add to the chances of allergic reactions too. The more ingredients, the
more you're playing with fire as far as allergies go. That's why I prefer the
California Natural chicken and rice, VERY basic ingredients!

About last Oct. we found Pokemon at our local park. She had a pink
collor on and was so tame and lovable. But she was skinny. I thought I was doing
an excellent thing bringing her home and my son 4 and niece 9 wouldn't have it
any other way. She seemed to gain weight when she got here. She was small so i
thought she was still a kitten about 4-5 months. Well a few weeks ago Pokemon
started "coughing" she got into the basement and had insulation on her nose. So
when the coughing was still going on but not as bad I thought she must have
sniffed some insulation. Last Monday her breathing semed like a deep hard
breathing and she was always so skinny i didn't notice a weight lost. I went
down into the basment i live in a triplex...i found rat poisoning in a corner on
a shelf. I rushed her to my local animal hospital and they told me that she
needed emergency care...so we drove to unniversity of penn animal emergency
hospital. They took her right in. I was thinking oh no rat poisoning..we dont
even have mice here. Well finally after getting half assed answers and them
saying it could be this or that...she told me that Pokemon had an abundancy of
fluided in her lungs and finally was told that she had lyphomia and that they
estimated Pokemon to be between 5-7 yrs old based on teeth and kidney size. To
do the full tests and amit her to the ICU unit would be between $6000-$8000
estimate and we needed to put $1300 down. And they were so kind to let us have 5
mins to decide. Also the dr. said that this lyphomia could have been from Feline
Aids or Feline Luekemia and that Cracks may have been affected. Now my mind was
shot. I decided to euthanize her when they said she was so sick that they also
believed she had this for awhile and was little hope. Ok on to Crackers. On the
way home from putting Pokemon to sleep I immediately called my vet to get
Crackers tested for FIV AND The luekemia. That was Tuesday and today is
Saturday. Last nite Friday cracker had his appointment the dr said looks like he
will be negative for both but we still have about 2 mins. Well he said oh we do
have a positive. As my heart dropped he got his book and said feline luekemia.
The dot that registared was a little very lite blue dot. I told him to send out
the other ultra violet test. They should be back Sun morning and with the
holiday if not sun then Mon. He said Crackers looked very Healthy and strong. I
asked him over and over being in shock if there were false positives and he said
that the test didn't have any. Here is a little of Crackers history: he is my
big baby 18.6 lbs..he has NEVER been sick ever...no colds nothing and he only
had diareahha 1 day when he was a yr old. He is very loving and happy..has never
been outside except when he would run out and i was right after him. That he
grew out of. He has a hearty appetite. I leave out food and fresh water 24-7 for
him. He lives a very stress free life and is a LOVER boy he loves to purr and be
rubbed. I am willing to do anything in the world for him and i will. I am open
to all and all suggestions. And all I can remember is that the 1st month pokemon
came they would fight and he did have a bite mark that bleed..he is all white.
So i know he suffered a deep wound puncture for her. What kills me is how dense
I was. I based Pokemon like a book by its cover. She was beautiful and so sweet
I NEVER realized i should of had her tested and never brought her near my baby.
I will never be able to forgive myself for Cracker being a positive Feline
Leukemia. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

First off, its very hard for a healthy
adult cat to catch FELV. There are two testsone is an
in-house test, Elissa. Then theres an IFA, blood sent out to lab. Be
sure the vet specifically says he did IFA. Now having said all of this,
believe me there are tens of thousands of cats who test pos for FELV and nobody
ever knows it. My own didnt test + until she was 4I had her
since she was a kitten and shes never been outside. False + are not
uncommon and further testing retesting is in order

Re: my baby crackers

2006-09-02 Thread felv

Well, first off, find a vet that isn't so uneducated. The in house ELISA
test has a very high rates of inaccurate results. Next, take another look at the
food you are feeding, read the ingredients, it should have meat as the first
ingredient, preferably the first two ingredients, and there should be NO corn in
it at all. Good nutrition is the best thing you can do. Next, once you find a
better vet, make sure they run a second IFA, because if your first vet did such
a poor job running the ELISA, he could have messed up the sample being sent
offfor the IFA you had done through his office (good bedside manner
dictates that you DON'T say "Oh it looks like he might be ok" TWO minutes before
the test is complete, just to say "Oh, nevermind, he's infected" That's HORRIBLE
bedside manner, it's just terrible)! Then, wait 3 months, and retest again. In
the meantime, read about all the possible treatments on our main website, and
consider trying one, or more, of them, in a hope that he can "throw" the virus.
That does happen, cats can test positive, and then later become negative, if
they mount an effective immune response to the initial infection. You also might
consider a vitamin C supplement, to boost his immune system, and a good
multi-vitamin supplement in general.

Now, about your not testing prior to adding another cat, well, mistakes
happen, All you can do is learn from it, and try to do better next time. Don't
blame yourself for things you didn't know, and can't change now, that's
pointless, and doesn't help anyone. Besides, FELV is not like FIV, it's not as
contagious, it depends really very much on a cat's immune system, unlike FIV,
which is almost always spread by a bite wound. Was Crackers ever tested in the
past, before you adopted Pokemon? He might have had it all along. You didn't
specifically say he tested positive for FELV, you said they did a combo test and
he came up positive (and the doctor only knew that by looking in a book?), so I
assume since this is a FELV group, he has felv, but does he have FIV too? I
worry also, because if the vet had to look up how to read a combo test in a
book, how many of these tests has he actually run? How OLD is the batch of test
kits he is using? Has he been using the same pack of kits for the past 5 years?
Are they expired? How could he possibly know ANYTHING about FELV if he doesn't
even know HOW to run the test without reading the book? Scary, all put
together.

No, it is a stronger, faster-acting steroid than
prednisone/prednisolone.

oh, hideyo, i'm holding you both in my heart.

just love her for every moment you have together--remember, too, that no matter how long we have with our cats, it is NEVER long enough, and the quality of the alloted time is what has to matter.

you have filled her little life with so much, please do not minimize that gift.

Hideyo, I am so sorry that Naomi is doing so badly. I
know how hard you have tried to help her, and I know how hard it is to have to
be away from her now. If it is indeed her time, here are vibes for a
gentle Bridge passage for her, and comfort to you. Some people believe
that souls who don't get their rightful time here come back later for another
chance. Maybe you'll find your sweet girl again.

Hideyo,I am praying for you and for Naomi and sending thoughts of peace and comfort your way. I cannot even imagine having to be at work while my baby is at home making her final journey...it must be torture for you! But know that you have done everything you can possibly do and that because of you she has known love, companionship, and a quality of care that she otherwise would not have had. She is lucky tohave you!Hugs!!MarissaHideyo Yamamoto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi, everyone, I wanted to ask everyone one more time to send Naomi prayers and peaceful energy so that she can spend her final days peacefully without pain.. while I am trying to do what I can to save her life.. there is not much left.. she is losing her blood so quickly and very anemic.. and
