Parting with Erlend
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" Hi all, We're still adjusting to Erlend not being with us here in our pasture any longer. Doug and I still routinely think we have to go toss some hay out for him, or check his water, or test the fence. This is going to take a while We're gradually parting with 'Erlend things'. The horse trailer went about a week ago. And now we're selling the horse trailer puller, as we really have little other use for it except for record breaking snow storms (like Dec. 2008). It is a 1997 Ford F250 Crew Cab Turbodiesel 4X4 5-speed in very nice shape. Well maintained. We're 1/2 hour northeast of Seattle and the truck can be made available where Doug works in Renton, WA during the weekdays. Spring is coming. Really. Erlend is moving
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" Hi and Happy New Year to you all, I want to congratulate Debbie Ulrich on her recent purchase of our pride and joy, MVF Erlend. Debbie has put together a herd of finely bred mares and fillies whose bloodlines will make nice crosses with Erlend. We couldn?t be happier about his new home, knowing what good care Debbie takes of her girls. Erlend will be worked and he will have a harem again. It may take him a while to realize that her barn is really for horses, as he has never seen a spotless barn aisle before, but I?m sure he will adjust. Check it out on her website www.corgihillfjords.com. Erlend now will be living with Debbie and her girls in Winona, Minnesota. Most of you know how attached I am to Erlend. Julie?s gift to us has been life-changing. It?s very hard to see him go, even to such a perfect placement. To ease the transition for all of us, I'll be flying out there to greet him as he arrives. Then Debbie and I will fly together to the NFHR meeting in Seattle. Hope to see you there. Fw: Mares Code of Honor!!!
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, This just came in from a horsie neighbor... Enjoy, Peg Peg Knutsen www.fairpoint.net/~kffjord/ - --- mare's secret code of honor The mare's secret code of honor is as old as horses themselves and is ultimately the species best kept secret. No mare shall ever produce a foal before it's time. (It's time being determined by the following factors): 1. No foal shall be born until total chaos has been reached by all involved. Your house must be a wreck, your family hungry and desperate for clean clothes, and your social life nonexistent. 2. Midwives must reach the babbling fool status before you foal out. Bloodshot eyes, tangled hair and the inability to form a sentence mean you're getting close. 3. For every bell, beeper, camera or whistle they attach to you, foaling must be delayed by at least one day for each item. 4. Vet check, add a day, internal add three. If you hear the words, "She's nowhere near ready. You'll be fine while I'm away for the weekend," Wait 12 to 16 hours and pop that baby out! 5. Owner stress must be at an all time high! If you are in the care of someone else, ten to fifteen phone calls a day is a sign you're getting close. When you hear the words "I can't take it anymore!" wait three days and produce a foal. 6. You must keep this waiting game interesting. False alarms are necessary! Little teasers such as looking at your stomach, pushing your food around in the bucket and then walking away from it are always good for a rise. Be creative and find new things to do to keep the adrenaline pumping in those who wait. 7. The honor of all horses is now in your hands. Use this time to avenge all of your stable mates. Think about your friend who had to wear that silly costume in front of those people. Hang onto that baby for another day. OH, they made him do tricks too! Three more days seems fair. Late feedings, the dreaded diet, bad haircuts, those awful wormings can also be avenged at this time. 8. If you have fulfilled all of the above and are still not sure when to have this foal, listen to the weather forecast on the radio that has been so generously provided by those who wait. Severe storm warning is what you're waiting for. In the heart of the storm jump into action! The power could go out and you could have the last laugh. You have a good chance of those who wait missing the whole thing while searching for a flashlight that works! 9. Make the most of your interrupted nights. Beg for food each time Someone comes into the stable to check you. Your stable mates will love you as the extra goodies fall their way too. 10. Remember, this code of honor was designed to remind man of how Truly special horses are. Do your best to reward those who wait with a Beautiful filly to carry on the mare code of honor for the next generation of those who wait! - - - --- The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Re: question about Fjords and their stamina
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Jen Frame asked about Fjord stamina, strength, and social behavior. I think they do have excellent stamina, but not when they are overweight and/or out of shape. That might be the reason. Yes, Fjords often can push their fencing, and other things, aroung. They know how strong they are. It's people who often don't. I, the middle-aged bossy lady, had to almost bully our very experienced barn builder into making things stronger than he usually did. Good thing. Most Fjords are very social. If there are other Fjords around, however, they often will choose to hang out with "their own kind." 2 saddles for sale
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, I have two nice wide tree saddles for sale. The first is a like new Crosby soft-seat AP, approx 16 1/2 size. It is black, and comes with girth, stirrup leathers, and two white fleece pads. This saddle is extremely comfortable and can be used in Dressage, trail, English Pleasure, etc. I am asking $500.00 US for it. The second is a nice Aussie Western saddle, of about the same size [I will have to confirm tomorrow night or Thursday]. It comes with all the trimmings for Western riding. Very comfortable. For this saddle, I am asking $400.00. I am selling these saddles because I have decided to keep only my Wintec Isabelle. They have been well cared for. I would think that the Sort-Ride would be ideal for a young competition rider. Replacement costs on either would be well over twice what I am asking. In the next couple of days, I will have pictures of each on Craig's list for your viewing pleasure. If you email me directly, I can email pictures of the Crosby. I haven't shot the Aussie yet. Please let me know privately if you are interested or just curious. Re: Fjord colors
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Linda L wrote "Is mud dun an acceptable color in Fjords?" Really Linda, considering your long involvement with Fjords, I'm surprised that you you're asking such a naive question. Surely you recall that the Fjords depicted in the cave paintings are all Mud-dun colored. Through selective breeding, the early Norwegians managed to imprint the better-known Brown, Grey, Red, White, and Yellow-dun colors on the Fjord breed. It is seldom talked about, but they never quite managed to eliminate the embarrassing Mud-dun coloration. So the occasional individual crops up. Perhaps they failed to breed out this unfortunate shade because horses with this genome have a peculiar trait - camelian-like they are able to switch from their dominant Mud color to one of the more common ones, thus disguising their Muddness. Individuals vary in their ability to change, so in some the Mud color will show through the disguise color [White, Red, etc] and vice-versa. This is what I was commenting about in Erlend. And, yes, the exact shade of the Mud-dunness will vary with rain and location. I'm delighted to be ableto help - I do hope this clears up your confusion. We have been biting our tongues trying to hold on to this for some time, as we didn't want to jinx anything until all the import testing was complete. So, finally, here is the big announcement! Announcing the arrival of the top Fjord stallion "Mogly" (Ster 1st Klas Prestatie Hengst) from Belgium to Canada! Mogly is jointly owned by Marg Kerr of Kervan Farm Fjords and me, Lori Albrough of Bluebird Lane Fjords. Mogly is a 9 year old stallion, his evaluation scores in 2007 were 8-8-8-9-8 with "Extra Mention" for quality. He received an A in his riding test, A in driving, and 83% on the 30 day performance test! His sire is Mosby by Havstad and his dam Inka is a States Premium Mare in Germany, a grey daughter of Illiano. Mogly stands 14.2 hh and has a cannon bone measurement of 8.5 inches! Check out Mogly's website to see photos and more info, http://mogly.ca Marg and I were both among the founding members of the Felix Group and we have been on the lookout for the right stallion to take our breeding programs to the next level since the wonderful Felix moved on to the stable of Susan Cargill. Both Marg and I have built small high-quality mare bands based both on our Felix daughters as well as other really good / imported mares. We feel really lucky to have found Mogly, who embodies all the qualities we were searching for to bring into our programs, with the emphasis on performance! Check out the photos of Mogly on his site to see why we are so excited! In the pair driving photo that is Mogly on the left from the box seat, with his partner who is a mare. One example of his super temperament. Mogly will be available to a limited number of approved registered Fjord mares by live cover in 2008. Re: Libby ad nauseum
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, There is no reason not to have two shows. However, the Moses Lake show needs to be in June, possibly in conjunction with the PNFPG Spring meeting. This will solve two problems. First - weather [this year's was Not typical, it's usually Much hotter in August]. Any local will tell you this. Second - it would not pose such a problem for exhibitors who can't attend two shows so close together, thus having to choose between them. Also, this change might allow some healing within the organization. A NFHR member can submit their stallions and mares to the registrar if they meet the following requirements: The horse must have offspring that have been evaluated in the NFHR evaluation system. These offspring must be evaluated in Conformation/Movement and in Performance and have received a Medallion of Quality. For a Mare or Dam to qualify, a minimum of two (2) offspring must have received Medallions. For a Stallion or Sire to qualify, a minimum of five (5) offspring must have received Medallions. The complete requirements are listed on page 14 of the NFHR Evaluation Handbook. This award is noted on the Fjord's registration and in the database. I might be wrong, but I think MVF Erlend is the only horse with the HOF annotation. Especially with all the evaluations held this summer, there must be more Fjords that have achieved this award. I think that this is a very important award and I hope more Fjords receive it! Take care! Brag alert
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, We just returned from the NFHR Evaluation at Moses Lake, WA, and I'm on cloud nine! I had entered Erlend in the Intro Draft and Advanced Driving performance tests, hoping he could get a Blue in the Draft test and thus complete the requirements for his NFHR Versatility Award. He had been scheduled to do these at Libby last year, but was unable to go. Even though he had not practiced the Draft test for over a year, Mel Thomas kindly agreed to take him through the test. Being quite experienced in draft work and having earned a 93 a few years ago with her own mare, she was highly qualified. We understood that all the performance tests would be on Thursday, so we planned to get in a little practice on Wednesday. Imagine our chagrin to learn when we arrived that, surprise, the Draft test had been moved up to 3:00 pm that day. Omigosh, what about our practice time? Yikes! I panicked, but Mel, with her usual unflappable attitude, stopped me from spinning in place and calmed me down some as we got His Majesty dressed in his Norwegian draft harness. She did have the chance to ground drive him a bit on a practice course. Totally adequate preparation, right? The covered arena kept everyone relatively cool as the test was set up on reasonably good footing. Terrified that my agitation would distract him, I hid behind the bleachers. From there I could just barely see the arena over the top. From that vantage point, it looked like they had done a pretty good job, but I couldn't swear to it, and bit my nails until the Evaluators, Karen Cabic and Karen Maas, were ready to read the results. "Please, say he earned at least 80 points", I whispered over and over to myself. Karen C. prefaced her remarks by saying that this was one of the best draft tests they had ever seen. My heart was pounding and I was biting my knuckles as she read their remarks and then told us that his score [and Mel's, of course] was 97 points! There was an audible gasp from the spectators and plenty of tears to go around. I was in total shock. Folks began joking about what on earth he had done to lose those three points. Apparently, even though he "stood like a rock", he pawed once I still can hardly believe it. I came back to earth somewhat after the Advanced Driving test, in which he reversed the numerals and earned a 79. He forgot how to stand like a rock, and instead stood like he had ants in his pants, which is to say that he fidgeted the whole time he was unhitched and rehitched. He did fine, though, in the driving and utility parts of the test. Many kudos go to Solveig Watanabe who never lost her cool and did a masterful job of driving. So here I am at home giving thanks that I have such talented and wonderful friends. A such a marvelous stallion. Thank you, Julie Will, I hope you were present in spirit and saw the whole thing. Peggy Enge's daughter, Mackenzie, performed as part of this group. Way to go girl! Erlend, of course, got the usual response to Fjordhorses - every time he was out of his stall he got mobbed. Unfortunately, they allways say, "He's so Cute!" Like any stallion, Erlend finds this annoying, and much prefers "Awesome!" My talented friend and neighbor, Ellie Keen, showed off his gaits to Greig, after the announcer finished the script about the breed and about this particular Fjord. We also celebrated His Majesty's 20th birthday that weekend - quietly - we didn't want him to learn how old he is. He still thinks he's 10. Erlend was kicked earlier this season by a mare who didn't properly appreciate the honor of being bred to Mr Spectactular. Although the wound went to the bone, it did not cause any chipping, and was just below the tendons and ligaments that attach to the stifle. The vet several times called him a "very lucky horse." Erlend was still a little stiff at the Expo, so we arranged for his first-ever acupuncture treatment from the attending Vet, Dr Hannah Evergreen. It was very interesting and very helpful. He almost dozed off - a typical response, I learned. I expect to use it more. Finally, it was fun to visit with other local Fjord owners, most of whom we had not met. I especially enjoyed talking with Krist Martinsen and his wife. Well, it's sunny today, and Mr Bigshot is enjoying his conjugal visit by Judy Phelp's Zaria, a lovely young lady. You can really see her sire, Flotren, in her. Rannita, his dam, was also imported from Norway by Julie Will and Darryl Wolford. I can't wait to see this baby! I show in A circuit paint, pinto, Arabian, and Happ,s ADS events and not one has ever asked or required a horse from in the state to have coggins or health certificates. That is why I find it such an oddity for the Fjord show to have this requirement. It seems that everyone responding is from another state. We must not be at as high a risk as other states or I am sure that it would be implemented in all these shows. Yes it is an added expense. And people should not be discouraged from Showing unless they have a ton of money. Till you have walked a mile in anothers shoes only means you have not experienced enough of life yet. OFI Jenny (Anvil's Morgen x Anvil's Juli by Leidjo) was born on Saturday at 8:30 PM. She is quite the sweetie and with that beautiful Morgen head we think she is a keeper. Mom and baby are out now and doing very well. A big thanks to Orville and Anita Unrau for leasing us Juli. We will be breeding her to our stallion, Peppertree's Christian and sending her back home this fall. As some of you already know, we are extremely excited to welcome our new stallion, Tico (Inco x Miriam by Havstad), purchased from Green Valley Farm and our new mare, LHF Jasmine (Marnix x Penfrydd's Oksana by Konggard), purchased from John Slater. Both horses are absolutely beautiful, inside and out, and fine examples of how Fjords should be - sweet, calm, willing, with excellent movement and good heads on their shoulders. They have fit into our herd wonderfully! Thank you to Green Valley Farm, John Slater, and everyone who hosted Dan, Levi, and the horses, on the trip to the mid-west and back. With the purchase of Tico as our performance stallion we have made the decision to put our other mature stallions on the market. We would also consider leasing them out to the right home. Anvil's Morgen (Modellen x Lena by Fjord Viking) is 19 this year. He has over 35 foals on the ground and patterns them with his beautiful head, good leg quality, and willing disposition. He is very well trained and easy to handle. Peppertree's Christian (Ronaldo x BDF Jennifer Ann by Gjest) is the most talented Fjord we have ever seen. His movement is superb, his build up-hill, and his pedigree exceptional. Chris is definitely a power-house and would not be a suitable stallion for everyone - he is best in a herd situation where he can live with other horses. Please see our recently updated web-site, www.oliviafarm.com, for more information on both of these stallions. At the age of 22 I moved to Washington, bought my house and land. Then built my arena and barn. I have been full time horsey for many years now. I offer many programs for children. From summer camps to horse shows, birthday parties, lessons, breeding. Anything horse related I do. I am close to Emerald Downs, so I also do lay-ups and work with some of the race horses. I would have to say that the most rewarding thing that I do is influence the youth in such a positive way. When they come to see what I have built and that I am so young and not married. Its been a very long time since I have posted to the digest and this is a difficult one. After 20 years of breeding, raising, training, buying and selling fjords Rich and I have decided that we are ready to slow down, therefore, we are getting out of the breeding business. We will offer our stallion for sale and our last two foals will be born next year. Don't misunderstand this - we will still have fjords but only enough for Rich to "play" with and one for me to ride. The most difficult part of this is deciding who to sell. Other then our stallion, Dundarling Tatonka, purchased from Karen Maas and Anvil's Birger who will never be sold, all our fjords have been bred and raised here and we are VERY proud of what we have accomplished with our breeding program over the years. This has been an ongoing decision over the past months in deciding who to keep and who to sell (and we still change our minds periodically). We will start with the following for sale: Dundarling Tatonka - 2004 Grey Stallion. Sire: RT Gandalf x MVF Erlend. Dam Rads Luna, imported from Norway. Tonka is a very classy looking fjord. He is green broke to ride and drive. He will be available as a stallion until after Reba is confirmed bred and then will be gelded, although he will still be for sale. He would make a great performance horse. I often think of Gayle Ware when watching him in the pasture. He is turned out with 5 steers and loves to cut one out of the herd and keep them in the corner until he gets done "playing" with them. I always watch amazed and wish I lived closer to Gayle so she could train him. He is very handy. Stops and turns on a dime. Does an awesome rollback. He is very full of himself in the spring while the mares are in season and I would not recommend him for anyone unfamiliar with handling a stallion. He is very correct. $6,000 stallion/$4,000 gelded. TUF Annie - 2000 brown dun mare. Sire: Anvil's Torbjorn. Dam: Hedvig out of a King Gjestar mare. The King Gjestar/Anvil's Torbjorn cross was one of our favorite over the years. We had many King Gjestar mares that produced great horses when crossed with Toby. Annie is a BIG mare (and a little fat due to summer pasture). Do to my going back to college and pursuing a new career, she is one of my fjords that was "missed" in the training schedule. She is green broke to ride and drive. Very smooth trot. Full sister to TUF Juli who earned her silver medallion as a 3-year-old riding western, english, driving, draft and conformation. Has the bloodlines for a great breeding prospect also. $5,000.00. TUF Gabriel (name pending) - 2007 colt. Sire: Dundarling Tatonka. Dam: TUF Reba (Gold Medallion) x Anvil's Torbjorn (Gold Medallion). Gabe was born on May 23 and will not be ready to go until September. What can I say? His mother is the best mare I have ever owned! $2,500.00. I have bred back TUF Kari - Sire: Anvil's Gra Viking. Dam: TUF Reba - and TUF Reba (hopefully) to Tonka for 2008 foals. They will be the last two foals born here and will be for sale. Most likely Kari's foal will be gray. This post is very bittersweet. We have totally enjoyed all that we have done over the years in the fjord business, however, ours is a small farm by standards and we do not hire employees to train horses, clean stalls, make hay, advertise, etc. and we are ready to "retire" of sorts. We have really started to enjoy camping with our horses and like to go west every August so don't misunderstand this post - we are NOT getting out of fjords - just redirecting our interests and time. Please e-mail me privately with any questions/comments. I will be getting pictures of these horses on the website shortly. (Tonka is already there) The website will be up and running through the end of August at which time we are going to let that go also and my e-mail address will change. The registering body of Fjords (Australian Pony Stud Book APSB) is looking for someone who would be able to judge the Fjord classes at the annual show on 26th & 27th January 2008. The show is held in Bendigo, Victoria (about 3hrs north of Melbourne). Accomodation and meals are paid for during the show period but unfortunately we do not have the funds to pay for airfares to Australia. Therefore we are looking for someone who may want to combine judging here with a trip to Australia or maybe someone that was already planning to come out here next summer (it's our Summer in January!!) It would also be ideal if the person was also able to judge some other sections at the show, such as saddle classes or maybe another breed section. This message is from: Lori Albrough <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hey everyone. It's been forever and a day since I posted to the list! I wanted to take the time to check in, and share some news bits and bytes. On the I Can't Believe That Was Me front, I had the best lesson with Prisco yesterday, in which for the first time ever we rode three fours (tempi changes, that is!) Of course Ute sneaks these things up on me, she does not say something like "Come across the diagonal and ride three changes every four strides" but more like "changes on the diagonal, I'll count" and afterwards I was looking over at her and saying, did I just do three fours!? "Yeah, but you can celebrate later". I have to say Prisco was rather deadpan about the whole thing too. "So what. Just another example of my greatness", says he. Well, I for one, am excited. Woo-hoo! So there. Champagne for everybody!! The other news-news item I've been meaning to post is that Dressage Canada has recently released it's Horse Awards List for 2006, and for only the second time in history this list has a Fjordhorse on it, and not just one Fjord horse on the list this time, no there are two! Prisco was awarded the Dressage Canada Silver Medal for his performances in 2006 and Bluebird Lane Kestrel received the Bronze Medal! Another woo-hoo! Oh and I got my rider silver medal too (blush blush). And over in the Where Has The Time Gone department, Stefan and I celebrated our 20th Anniversary this February, with a week-long visit to Sanibel Florida where we got to spend time with fellow lister Robin Churchill. Robin lives in a truly gorgeous area with large nature and wildlife preserves where Stefan and I spent many happy hours hiking and kayaking. Robin has two Fjords and I had lots of fun riding them. Stefan took some nice photos which I must find time to post on the website, but in the meantime ... picture me, riding, in short sleeves, (here comes the important part) in FEBRUARY with Palm Trees and soft breezes. Aaaah. Big smiles. Spring has still not come to Southern Ontario (they are forecasting another six inches of snow for us overnight) so I am getting a lot of mileage out of those Florida memories. Aaaah. Re: Hot wire
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Les, We also use the white tape, primarily for visibility. We can get our fences up to about 7v with our Gallagher M80 charger [about 800 feet of line]. We use three strands on capped T-posts for some of it, and use one strand on the longer electric fence insulators that keep the wire/tape almost 6-in away from the wood. but for horses that chew, we had to add a hot wire raised above the top of the wood fence to prevent chewing. The very best fencing, which we can't afford, is made of about 3-in wide rubber stuff with hot wire embedded in it. The best feature is safety - it will give but not break if a horse hits it. I don't recall the brand name, but you can Google "horse fencing" and you will find it. Someone on the List probably will email the name of that product. It's attractive and comes in several colors. For safety using our electric wire or tape, we make sure the breaking weight is light enough that a horse will break it, rather than have it cut him, if spooked into the fence. I know many like the New Zealand braided wire fencing, which is advertised as not capable of killing a horse. Unfortunately, I know two folks whose horses had to be put down after tangling with it. I would never use it. Fencing is always a work in process, as far as I am concerned. A stray thought - I'm sure my parents never envisioned a life for their middle-aged studious daughter that focused on horse fencing, horse sex, horse manes, horse manure, horse mud, horse tractors, horse barns, horse you-name-it. They had hardly become used to 25+ years of middle-aged womens' soccer Of course, I'm still shaking my head at the activities and accomplishments of my sons - not what mom had in mind. trimming manes
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have always used Fiskar scissors for trimming manes. Getting a Fiskar sharpener in Norway helped, but Dan Watanabe turned me on to the serrated Fiscars. I got mine at Home Depot. Their advantage is that they grip, so I don't have to slide the scissors backwards with each cut as I do with the non-serrated blades. Some prefer to do a wet mane - I like to do it dry, and it's rare that I don't do a next-day touchup. I find the task soothing. Usually. Of course, I'm not doing 8 Fjords anymore, just His Majesty, who often falls asleep while being trimmed. Ho hum. Apparently, my singing lulls him to sleep or else he's trying his best to ignore it - either way, it sure makes trimming easier. I don't roach, even though Erlend's mane is thick, partly because I want to have him looking as presentable as possible for visitors. Hair grows faster in the Spring, so this means I need to trim almost every two weeks. On another topic, thinking of Dan reminds me that he has threatened to write his own Herald article about our "challenging" trip to Winona, from his perspective. Something about what it's like to transport this particular elderly lady across the country and back Thankfully, he hasn't. So far. And, like you, I can't say enough about my admiration and love for Julie Will. She, and her husband, Darryl Wolford, had an enormous impact on the growth of the breed in North America. Darryl first called Julie's attention to Flotren in Norway. Of course she wanted to important this magnificent stallion to the US. It was my good luck that, in order to finance this, she felt she needed to relocate her senior stallion, Erlend, to the West Coast. Julie followed his career out here closely and even made the long trip to Ellensburg while she still had the energy. So many times I have wanted to share the latest news with her and share her excitement. I do tell her about these times - I hope she hears. Julie had clear breeding goals. I believe she attained those and much more. I so much wanted her to be at the show in Winona and see her guy honored in the Get-of-Sire class! As I told many friends there, I had virtually nothing to do with the win. All I did was gather together some of the fine examples of her breeding. Julie produced all of those horses representing Erlend, not I. I've never met a soul with more integrity that Julie. She was as competitive as anyone, yet always supportive and friendly to all. Some of the information I have read says that one treatment of fenbenzadole i.e.: pancure, Safe guard, will not entirely eradicate the worm when it is in the encysted stage. This is when it has burrowed in to the wall of the cecum and colon, and is in the hibernation state before they emerge. During this time, I have read they are somewhat protected in their own bubble of sorts with a very slow metabolism, so the purge type wormers don't harm them until they hatch because of the fluid they live in prior to emerging. While they are in hibernation, they apparently do a good amount of cellular damage, and irritation which can lead to the unexplainable bouts of colic, diarrhea. The alarming part is that a healthy horse can be seriously infected, all the while on a regular rotational de-worming schedule. Now here is my question. Has anyone ever heard of worming for 5 consecutive days with a double dose of Fendobenzadole to eradicate the encysted stronglye? I have come across some articles on the net, and am wondering if anyone has done it? Rosemary in Roy...yesterday we had sun and 70 degrees. Saddle for sale
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, I am selling a Crosby Softride AP saddle. It is a size 16, wide tree, and black. I rode it lightly, and it is in excellent condition. girth and two fleece pads go with it. I am asking $800.00 US for it. The new models cost $1900.00 to $2000.00. I am selling it because I have decided to keep only my Wintec Isabelle Dressage and my Aussie saddles. If you are interested, let me know and I can send pictures. I am also posting it on Craig's list. Soon, I will have some tape of Erlend showing off in our arena on youtube. I eagerly await my Herald. Well said, Ruthie. In this regard, the Norwegians set a good standard. They probably have an inherited gene by now which enables them to absorb and understand the whole picture at not more than a glance. They do look at different characteristics, starting at the feet. I'm sure our excellent Evaluators do the same thing, but I'm not sure the Eval sheet categories allow them to express this to best advantage. Don't get me wrong, I am enthusiastic about our Evaluation system [I should have Frequent User points...], and am glad to see more folks using it all the time. As you know, I have wanted a temperament category included in the Conformation and Movement section for a long time. The Norwegians are able to judge temperament readily, since they have [the stallions] for several weeks before they are judged. I'm still not sure how our system could be adapted to include temperament. Do you have any thoughts on this? I know you don't usually like to express strong opinions, but how about just this once...? :) Peg Knutsen www.horsehumor.net www.fairpoint.net/~kffjord/ The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

My father in-law and a bunch of the ranchers around them inseminate some years this way, and have very good success, on lets say herds of around 300-500 cows at a time. I would think with that much experience maybe a rancher would be a good source of information. I know they can do a herd of 300 cows in 2 days with a good person, of course they use a squeeze shoot, but they must be doing something right to have maybe only 5 or 6 miss out of 300 cows. They don't use ultrasound or anything, just sync all the cows and they pretty much all take. They run a bull with the heard to catch any that missed but usually they all give birth pretty much within a couple weeks of each other, and the few that missed might be a month after that because the bull bred them. Re: Frozen sperm
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Catherine, your post about frozen semen was excellent. Our specialist would not even consider sending frozen straws of Erlend's semen to any mare owner who wasn't attended by a specialist vet. When we got the request from Australia to freeze and send his semen, we learned a Whole Lot about shipping frozen semen. It seems that every country has its own set of regulations and requirements for how the semen must be collected, frozen, and shipped. If these are not followed, they will not accept it. Unfortunately, our vet made an error in following Australia's instructions and the CO2 container sat in the airport for a couple of months, being topped off regularly to keep it cold enough. The mare owner tried every avenue to get it accepted, including asking a Member of Parliament to intervene with customs. No deal. The container had to be returned with all the semen intact, and a fresh one sent. Our vet was willing to send to this mare owner because her AI vet was Dr Angus McKinnon, considered the pioneer in using equine frozen semen. So now Erlend has a son Down Under increasing the limited gene pool there. An addition to your post Catherine - when we talk about how a stallion's semen freezes, we are really talking about how viable it is when it thaws. We did not have to use test mares in our case, because our guy thawed at 50% progressive motility, a good result. Also, thanks for your insistence that I take the Colorado Short Course in AI. It was extremely helpful. Peg Knutsen www.horsehumor.net - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 4:44 PM Subject: Frozen sperm This message is from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ah ha, Debbie... good question... it all depends on the VET and the VET TECH or the SPERM TECH... Good ones will get your mare pregnant with "tested sperm" and bad ones will "blame" the stallion's sperm... To be frozen and to be sold as frozen there are strong tests that are made prior to the sell of the sperm. In the USA, it cost about $10,000 in 1996 to collect and test a stallion. I am sure it is a bit down but it is not an easy inexpensive thing. The sperm is collected, then frozen and then thawed and then placed into 3-6 mares. Then they wait to see if they conceive. If they do and go full term, the sperm is considered good enough to sell. :-) We have such sperm here in our sperm bank. The problem is having vets that know how to handle the frozen sperm and the mares when inseminating. Our first VET used 1/2 of the sperm and never got the mare pregnant. She did not follow the protocol that was given her by the stallion owner and thought that her way would work. Three months of boarding and no results I tried another Vet. I actually took the mare home and from VET #1 told me she was out of heat 2 weeks ago... She came home and was in heat that day, so I loaded her up and took her and the sperm to Vet #2. Vet #2 had a GREAT SPERM TECH. She ultra sounded our mare 11 PM 1 AM & 3 AM when the follicle dropped and then she thawed out the sperm (per directions form the stallion owner) and inseminated. Directly afterwards blood was taken from the mare to check hormonal levels and blood was checked 5 hours later. It was determined that the mare needed a boost and chemically she was given one. We had a great healthy foal the next year... Long story short... we have tried again but with other vets since VET #2 had moved to another area two more tires later we still do not have a second foal... I AM CERTAIN... YOU NEED TO HAVE A QUALITFIED PERSON do the insemination and mare care. You also need a good record of the stallion's sperm. ASK for records of motility, numbers, extenders, protocol for the sperm handling from the stallion owner's view. Other HINT... go to sperm class... LEARM and EDUCATE yourself... OK... I hope this answered some questions or maybe be opened up more on this subject. Here is what I have found so far that pertains to Grabb. According to NFHR records, Grabb's first registered U.S born foal, Signe, was born in July 1981. Grabb died in July 1985. So, he was available for breeding in this country for 5 years. During that 5 year period, he sired 29 registered foals. That works out to be an average of 5.8 foals per year. There are many imported and U.S. born stallions that have sired more progeny. Grabb's real influence to the Fjord breed comes from the numbers of progeny he sired in Norway. Take care! the joys of being interviewed
This message is from: "Douglas Knutsen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, I want to second Catherine's email about being quoted. I have had the experience a few times, once even in a deposition, of being wildly misquoted. Unfortunately, a few times I was not given the chance to review ahead of time what was going to be published and discovered the misquotes only upon reading the article. I'm sure the misquotes were not deliberate, but only resulted from the interviewer's having little knowledge of the subject and/or having a certain point to make. I think Mike's experience was the result of the former. It is disconcerting to read something that's incorrect about a subject near and dear to your heart. I haven't yet read the article, but I'm sure I would have been upset too. After reading the first post about the article, though, I was pretty sure that there was some "pilot error" on the interviewer's part. I have not known Mike to make uninformed or incorrect statements about our fuzzy buddies. Bad jokes sometimes, but not uninformed statements. I don't want to reinforce stereotypes about the Seattle area's rainy weather, but I have had cause recently to be very glad we live on a hill PS - It was great to have Curt Pierce visit for a few hours on his way home.
