Finding old stuff means you need a good search engine and good search

Mailist provides the means of searching through archives much easier and
simpler since it's all in the user's desktop/laptop and it's all

I'd expect more newer users wanting a forum and less older users, and

contribute to/make Open Source (free) software.

I just wanted to take some time to officially say *Thank You* for all
the good things which you guys/gals have made to my(/our) benefit, of

To All of you, I say a Big Thank You for it.

 freevo -fs -layout Multihead

Nice patch. Thanks. (BTW, will this make it into the next revision/svn?)

It's fine installing kaa into the site-packages as it is a library of

[Freevo-users] Frevo 1.7.x-SVN - Autogen.sh nodocs

2007-06-17 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I tried installing the latest svn release of freevo on my home media

installed for testing purposes..

1. Kaa - For X reasons, I cant get this thing to be installed into the

up have to install it as system wide then freevo will be able to find
it.

os.path.walk('./Docs/installation', docbook_finder, data_files)
os.path.walk('./Docs/plugin_writing', docbook_finder, data_files)

the above 2 lines which then proceeded normally.

Note : For Y reasons, it X won't come back up when I do a freevo -fs on
the test directory. Have not troubleshoot it much yet..

Just thought I'll let you guys know.

[Freevo-users] Freevo Gentoo Portage in SVN

2007-05-31 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I guess this is directed directly at whoever maintains a gentoo overlay
in svn (I just noticed that!!)

Anyway, I just want to find out more about this overlay before I dive
headlong into it (actually already did :-0)

Gentoo bugzilla has a freevol ebuild in
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156497 which I'm using right now,
but due to the bug in kaa which was not in the release package (the
thumbnailing bug which was highlighted in the mail list in May 7th)

I'm pondering if/how I can go about getting it back.

Do I.. use the SVN Overlay (and thus is always on 'bleeding' ) or is
there another path which I can choose??

I want the thumbnails feature back for the videos.

Do I.. use the SVN Overlay (and thus is always on 'bleeding' ) or is
there another path which I can choose??

The overlay was created by me for making 2.0 svn test ebuilds. But
since gentoo has no 1.7.x I could also add an ebuild for that. If you
have a working ebuild for 1.7.1 please send it to me and I will
 include it to the overlay.

The ebuild I have seems to be working, it's in the link above. Except
for the fact that I have

1. Thumbnailing issues (which is the question I'm asking as to how do I
get it back, I know from the mail list, it's said to be fixed in kaa in
svn (But which Kaa? there's imlib2/base/metadata/db) What do I need to
update to get the thumbnailing feature back?

2. A/V Sync. Seems like for X reasons, the Video is slower than the
audio for xine/mplayer but is OK when I play it from the CLI so the
video clip is not an issue.

(posted separate mail on this)

Thanks.

BTW, the Panorama skin looks great! I like it..

If mplayer's audio is out of sync with the video when playing something
from the command line then you should ask on the mplayer users list. The
reason is that freevo is really a wrapper around other tools, when
something doesn't work from the command line then you need to find the
correct set of arguments and the best place is the list of the tools.

Actually, I found out that when I do

-ao oss:/dev/dsp - A/V OK
-ao esd - A/V out of sync
no -ao option, AV OK
-ao alsa - AV OK as well

I'm used to using esd as it can do sound mixing, (never did figure out
how to get alsa_dmix to work as of yet since esd was working fine till
now for X reasons.

BTW, the above are tested on the command line as well.

 Hi,

The vlc plugin is very, very poor at the moment. It only support rstp

in that case, is poorly implemented in freevo.

Any clues on how it can be hacked?

Yes, this is a 'normal' bug, just corrected in freevo 1.7.2 : you have
to rerun freevo setup to automagically add vlc in your freevo.conf file,
or alternatively, you can do this add manually.

I am already on 1.7.2 and I've already ran freevo setup and I already
have
 vlc = /usr/bin/vlc

in freevo.conf and still if barfs.

clues appreciated

Actually, I would like to use vlc because it has capability to select
the audios on the fly which as I (think I've mentioned before) is
crucial for those asian karaoke discs which have audio only on left and
audio+vocal on the right for it to be able to downmix/upmix mono to

Mplayer and xine is not able to do on-the-fly downmixing and have to
revert to complicated channels selecting/swapping.

 Linux propaganda though.

I tried to create 2 separate instances/times of the install and both
times, it ended up bad, either something went missing during the install
or it was't working in the end.

(I had the same luck coincidentally with Pluto too)

So.. Bad experience thus far and results certainly doesn't come out much
like the AVI file from the site.

[Freevo-users] Bluetooth Remote Control (using a SE T630)

2007-02-11 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi,

I struggled with making my own IR receiver to use with LIRC but it's
been 1 year with no progress. (yeah.. Lazy :-) )

Anyway, i stumbled across Bluemote (can't remember the URL right now)
but it connects a Bluetooth enabled phone (I have a Sony Ericssion T630
and according to the site, the author makes it work on his T610)

Got it up and running in 30 min, right now, fine tuning it with some
scripts etc to do volume muting/volume up/dn etc..

The SE's joystick can be used as a mouse(if needed)

Limitation is only towards the # of keypad the phone has.

I've tried it with Freevo and it works great. (under X11, but not yet as
standalone so I can't confirm if it will work standalone)

Additional benefit is it can even transmit simple commands to the host
pc via an exec command.

[Freevo-users] Video-Plugin Submenu

2006-04-04 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi,

This is along the lines of the left/right audio switching. Since there
isn't a way to do on-the-fly changes for both mplayer and xine, I want
to add another 2 options to the freevo submenu.

Watch Movie
-Filename.avi E
- Play
- Play with Alternate Player
-

I would like to extend that to

Watch Movie
-Filename.avi E
- Play
- Play with Alternate Player
- Play with Xine-Left
- Play with Xine-Right
- ...

Basically, the difference between Xine-Left/Right and normal xine would
be the option.

--post upmix_mono:channel=0
--post upmix_mono:channel=1

Which would be placed into the xine.py plugin file.

I have created a copy of the plugin, but I cannot get the submenu to
show this option. It will only have

Play (w/ default player)
Play with alternate Player

Which file should I be hacking?? videoitem.py?

Thanks

Nope There isn't one.

what _can_ be done right now is just to have a config file which enables
the post-processing. I've looked at the config file as well as the
source, doesn't seem to have the option
(xine-lib/src/xine-engine/config-file.c)

language channels on the fly would be of use in Freevo too, I guess. But
maybe there is already anothere triggering mechanism available for that,
if Freevo2 links against the xine library...

It would definitely be useful.

In My file.

Left = English = Channel 0
Right = Chinese = Channel 1
Stereo = Eng+Chinese = Channel -1

which may actually designate the possible channels from a 5.1 setup,
plus some automatism, maybe. So just try it out.

[Freevo-users] Left/Right Audio Switching

2006-04-01 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I know this isn't entirely a Freevo Question but I've not been getting
much result/responses elsewhere.

The thing here is, I have some avi files which are dual-language. eg:
Left = English
Right = Chinese

When I play them using freevo (or xine or mplayer) it will output in
Stereo and I will get left+right = English+Chinese = Garbage.

I found out that I can do audio switching using mplayer using :

1. mplayer -af channels=2:2:0:1:0:0
(map left channel to right and output)
2. mplayer -af pan=2:1:1:0:0

However, what I've not been able to find is a way to map a shortcut key
to either of the 2 actions.

a mplayer -input cmdlist doesn't list either of the 2 options as a
map-able command.

Do any of you guys here know how that can be done or if it's possible??

It's really frustrating that Linux, with all it's multimedia greatness,
can't even do Left/Right Audio Switching like what can be done on a
standalone USD20 DVD/VCD player.

Thanks

Freevo allows to choose the audio track in dual files. Just press E or the
equivalent in your remote control to see the options.

E will only give me a menu such as

Play with ALternate player
Search IMDB
Create Thumbnail
etc

Even so, I think there is something wrong with your files. My dual avi files
have 2 tracks, one for each language, and each track has 2 channels, ie, it's
 stereo.

Mine is more like Karaoke files. I'm not really sure if it's stereo, but
it sure doesn't present itself as that.

In your case, you have only one track with both languages.

Nope. It's One Language per channel/track.
LEft = English
Right = Chinese

or in Karaoke
Left = Music Only
Right = Music + Vocal
Stereo = Music + Vocal

The above setup enables users/singers to sing either the Karaoke by
him/herself and switch to the one with Vocal if they don't know how to
sing that particular verse.

fix your files, so that freevo and
mplayer can see them as dual files, not stereo.

Frankly, I've never seen dual files before.

[Freevo-users] Slow Access to RMVB (Real media) files

2006-02-05 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi,

I have a number of RMVB files (Real Media/Read Video) which I find to
be of great quality and yet small size.

The problem I have is that when freevo access folders which contains
these rmvb files, it' will slow to a crawl. It will show Scanning
directory, be patient and then depending on the # of files I have
there, take between 5 min to 1 hour to process them. (it's even worst
when these files are not local, but on a SMB network share)

I know it is processing these files because from the Wife's windows box,
I can see it accessing the files incrementally.

I'm not sure what freevo is doing. Is it going through Mplayer to _look_
at the file? Or is it going through mminfo?

I tried doing

$ mminfo -d /path/to/some/rmvb file
mmpython media info

Trying video/real

And then it hangs there for a while.

[Freevo-users] Video Volume Control

2006-01-17 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

I found only one reference to this issue in a Feb 23 2005 post titled
Unable to adjust volume.

Basically the problem here is that once mplayer is spawned, volume
control normally done using the M/N key will not work and will have to
resort to using 0/9 which is mplayer's mapping.

That's OK, unfortunately, mplayer's volume is already MAX and still
Freevo volume is still at 40% (that's the default volume)

This doesn't happen when playing audio files because I believe focus is
still on freevo and not on mplayer.

Anyone has any comment on this?

BTW, how do I re-map freevo's shortcut keys? (perhaps map 0/9 to
increase volume instead)

[Freevo-users] Audio.Detach Plugin - Audio still playing when playing Video

2006-01-17 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I just tried out this plugin and it's really a great complement when
doing picture browsing, unfortunately, I find that there's something
wrong as I will not stop when I start playing a video.

The wiki says that it's supposed to you can watch tv and videos while
playing detached audio but you won't hear their audio.

Well, something's wrong, I can hear the audio. Is there anything which I
should be doing or am I doing something wrong?

Freevo-1.5.4

player. The video is stretched to the 4:3 resolution and consequently
looks completely wrong. I think the culprit is the 'expand' option in
  the XINE_ARGS_DEF.

I was having this issue as well last night. I knew what the problem was

in /usr/lib/python-2.4/site-packages/freevo instead of
in /usr/share/freevo

Sorry, I have a 4:3 tv and so I never saw the problem. I guess the
best way to fix this is to use a 16:9 resolution in Freevo,
too. Someone needs to create a nice 16:9 skin to make it all working.

The problem here is that xine will expand it no matter what the res of
the TV is. (I use a laptop monitor and it expands/stretches the video to
fit!!!)

then you've gotta have local clients connect

Not too sure what the above means though. It'll just initiate the Video

[Freevo-users] Freevo And integration of VLC

2005-10-24 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,
Has anyone on this list been able to get VLC intergrated into Freevo? I
am currently running Freevo as a set-top box and set-up a separate
server box running VLC and acting as a VoD server.

Right now, VLC is using RTSP protocol (Live.com media streaming
implementation protocol) and xine does not support it. Even though
Mplayer is said to support it, but according to the Mplayer and
live.com's devel, it's support is broken. (Hence I can't use neither
mplayer nor xine to play the VLC VoD Streams)

Per freevo-archive, Dirk Meyer had this to say

[quote]
So why not vlc? First of all, I couldn't get it running. Second: every
new player (vlc, gstreamer, whatever) takes time to integrate into
Freevo. I don't have that time. So _I_ will only integrate two
programs: mplayer and xine. But this two will be integrated with
freevo having _full_ control over the stream and freevo drawing on top
of the video. So this is more important to me than supporting every
player. But if someone whats to help, I would accept vlc patches.
[/quote]

So, since this is a feature which I would like to have, I'm willing to
put up a bounty for it. If there are interest, please email me offline
to work out the details.

Thanks for the great work thus far on freevo.

Are you using those Mini-itx boxes? and are you using the unichrome

if yes, perhaps you want to try

Which should make the xxmc module buffer 15 frames instead of 8, just

the Xv module. Should even make mpeg2 playback smoother, but it then
consumes more frame-buffer memory.

That is more a client feature. If you use xine you can also do that,
 with mplayer you can't.

Are we talking about live broadcast video or something like VoD? (video
on demand)

I'm currently experimenting on doing VOD(RTSP Streams using live.com)
using VLC and it works great. Although it needs to use VLC to actually
playback the stream. Mplayer is _supposed_ to support playing rtsp
streams, (and a Poster - Andreas Lorensen) mentioned that he can do it
under freevo using mplayer.), but for my case, playing the streams under
mplayer, it will start to jerk after 5-10 seconds and then it complains
about dropped frames. (I've tried -dropframe and -harddropframe and both
doesn't work).

I don't believe xine can play rtsp streams. (I've googled)

  3) OMFGG, if freevo had a TV player interface to a vlc streaming server

Yes, and we already have a patch for mplayer to support chunk file
playing and we will put that in xine, too.

Please explain what this is and where I can find this chunk file. (I
searched through mplayer's manual page and it only gave me refs to audio
density and verbosity)

I think the there are the following requirements,
* A VLC (running as a client) plugin for TV input
* A remote interface so the play/pause/rewind/fast forward buttons
  work on tv

Arg. The client is only used for watching and you send play/pause over
the network. I hope they are using RTSP. Or is it your idea. If so:
don't! Timeshifting should be handled in the client, not the streaming
 server.

VLC server running VOD is the current setup. I've not tried embedding /
asking freevo to open up vlc. I'll give it a shot.

 1) Switched from MPlayer to Xine as the quality was better
 2) Set Xines VO_DEV options to xfb (XFrameBuffer)

and then it all works perfectly... not even any sound delays!

But can you get fullsreen on Framebuffer alone?? When I was playing

[Freevo-users] Running Freevo automatically as NON-Root

2005-03-21 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

currently this machine (EPIA-M10K) is being used as a standalone box
running Freevo on Gentoo.

I've made it such that /etc/init.d/local will start freevo during
bootup, as in the settings below.

Now, I noticed that it's running as root and I don't quite like that. I
need some pointers on how to get Freevo to auto-downgrade itself to a
normal user.

Can it be done? I most certainly think it could, only question is, can
someone teach me how?

# no: don't start Freevo
# yes:start Freevo on startup. You should only use this when the
# computer is for Freevo only or you use Freevo with a DXR3
# daemon: start Freevo in daemon mode. The daemon will wait for you to
# press QUIT or POWER on your remote and will than start
# Freevo. After Freevo shut down, the daemon will wait again.
#
# You don't need a X server running to start Freevo from init. If
# needed, Freevo will start a X server on its own. Make sure your X
# server can handle the resolution defined in /etc/freevo/freevo.conf

freevo=yes

[Freevo-users] Setting Video Player Preference

2005-03-16 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

I have another issue. Finally xxmc is working for Xine and I can get to
play DVDs with ~20% CPU w/ interlace and it's nice and all.

However, when I revert to playing AVI (DivX), I get the stutter and
jerkiness. If I revert to using XV, it works fine.

In /etc/freevo/local_conf.py
XINE_VIDEO_DEV = xxmc

I also tried
XINE_VIDEO_DEV = xxmc xv

XINE_VIDEO_DEV = xxmc,xv

XINE_VIDEO_DEV =

# XINE_VIDEO_DEV =

and I tried hacking the xine.py code to

elif item.mode == 'dvd' and hasattr(item.media, 'devicename'):
  # dvd:///dev/dvd/2
[0] command.append('dvd://%s/%s' % (item.media.devicename,
item.url[6:]))
[1] command.append('-V xxmc')
[2] command.append('-V xxmc' 'dvd://%s/%s' % (item.media.devicename,
item.url[6:]))

[0] = Org
[1] = Putting this before the org invocation
[2] = putting the xxmc part inside the org invocation.

Neither [1] nor [2] worked.

self.command = [ '--prio=%s' % config.MPLAYER_NICE ] + \
   config.XINE_COMMAND.split(' ') + \
[3] [ '--stdctl', '-V', config.XINE_VO_DEV,
 '-A', config.XINE_AO_DEV ] +

I also tried changing [3] to only read [ '--stdctl',
but this didn't work either.

After all this, noticing that I could specify which media player were to
be used to play which type of files, I tried

XINE_VIDEO_SUFFIX = [ 'vob' ]

Didn't work either.

There must be a way to specify which player should be used to play which
type of media. Either that or someway to specify that if the media to be
played is to be DVD, then I should be using XINE and using the xxmc
video driver instead of XV.

PS : reading the xxmc readme, noticed that it says it will try the xxmc
and if it fails, it will fall back to using XV. I guess it's not really
failing (since it's able to locate the driver). It's just that it's
choppy.
in README_xxmc.html.gz, there's the option
video.device.xvmc_more_frames:1

How do I turn this on and will it help??

PS : Please CC me directly as List mail isn't getting to me for some
unknown reason.

# XINE_VIDEO_DEV =

and I tried hacking the xine.py code to

elif item.mode == 'dvd' and hasattr(item.media, 'devicename'):
  # dvd:///dev/dvd/2
[0] command.append('dvd://%s/%s' % (item.media.devicename,
item.url[6:]))
[1] command.append('-V xxmc')
[2] command.append('-V xxmc' 'dvd://%s/%s' % (item.media.devicename,
item.url[6:]))

[0] = Org
[1] = Putting this before the org invocation
[2] = putting the xxmc part inside the org invocation.

Neither [1] nor [2] worked.

self.command = [ '--prio=%s' % config.MPLAYER_NICE ] + \
   config.XINE_COMMAND.split(' ') + \
[3] [ '--stdctl', '-V', config.XINE_VO_DEV,
 '-A', config.XINE_AO_DEV ] +

I also tried changing [3] to only read [ '--stdctl',
but this didn't work either.

After all this, noticing that I could specify which media player were to
be used to play which type of files, I tried

XINE_VIDEO_SUFFIX = [ 'vob' ]

[Freevo-users] Mplayer stutters under Freevo

2005-03-14 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

I'm curious if Freevo places additional overhead on Mplayer.

This is a EPIA M10k running Freevo 1.5.2 on Gentoo. Xine and Mplayer is
compiled with Xvmc and I have libxvmc-0.13 and xorg-x11-6.8.2
w/unichrome R30.

Mplayer and xine is running the lastest version.

xine-ui-0.99.3
xine-lib-1.0
mplayer-1.0_pre6

In addition to that, I have issue playing DVDs under Freevo. Running it
under X, I can play DVDs fine (even with deinterlace enabled) and I get
CPU usage of ~50-60% and no dropped frames. (AFAICT)

Running it under Freevo, I see like 85-90% CPU usage.

Can anyone share experiences with running Freevo on a EPIA M10K?? I
would like to get more info on how best to optimese/get it to work! :-(

[Freevo-users] EPIA M10K + DVD playing on Freevo High CPU Usage

2005-03-10 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi all,

WOnder if you can clue me in on this. I have a Gentoo system on
xorg-x11-6.8.2 + unichrome and drm/dri enabled + xvmc enabled mplayer
and xine.

Playing DIvx files has cpu usage in the range of 70% which is fine since
it _suppsed_ not to use the HW Mpeg decoding.

I recently got myself a DVD-ROM and trying to play DVDs, CPU usage is
still 70-85% which is high. (and this is w/o interlace enabled!!)

Can anyone tell me what's happening and how you guys are solving this??
Im sure a lot of you ppl here has the EPIA.

Also, for some reason, does using Freevo to open up a DVD/movie actually
uses more Juice then under X?? (I tried playing the same DVD under X
(fluxbox) and it was like 40-60% CPU Usage. )

PS : Pls CC me on replies, since list mail for some reason, does not
reach me. (and yes.. I'm subscribed)

The only problem I appear to have with this system is forcing the

Thanks Justin, It worked perfectly. The only thing which is not working
perfectly is unfortunately the Audio Stream played by either Mplayer or
fbxine. There seems to be cracks and hisses in the stream when played
from xine. Is there another alternative for this?? (trying it out from
my laptop using xine cracks and hisses, xmms is fine.)

IIRC is libfusion something from directfb

Under Gentoo, it's a Use flag called fusion

But AFAIK, Freevo has no use for it.

[Freevo-users] Fbdev + fullscreen + video

2005-02-13 Thread Ow Mun Heng
Hi All,

I have some serious issues.

gentoo + EPIA M10K

Xorg-x11 - 6.8.0
X works, Can get fullscreen freevo, plays audio/thumbnails great
Once I run Mplayer to play video, everything crashes. can't see anything
and I think the box crashes.

Xorg-x11-unichrome - (epia-kalf.org)
X works. FUll screen. mplayer does not crash, audio is heard, can see
the player GUI. but no Video

Fbdev
Freevo works. Not fullscreen. (if I lower Res to 6480x480 via vga=788, I
can get virtual fullscreen on tvout.) Playing video will result in
native resolution. Fullscreen is not achieveable. (but depending on the
vga=xxx mode, the video gets bigger :-) )

directfb.
Freevo Works. No Fullscreen. Video plays but color is all off.

Here's the catch.
mplayer will work fullscreen when used from the command line. Just
code
mplayer /home/media/codemonkey.mpg
/code

I've tried hacking the mplayer.py source to not include screenh/screenw
but it seems it does not honour it at all.

I've also tried to erase all options MPLAYER_ARGS_DEF in
/usr/share/freevo-config.py to no success.

Xine will play fullscreen when used as the alternate plaver. (xine
-Vfb /home/media/codemonkey.mpg works fullscreen) but audio will go off
after 10-30 secs into the film. Either that or it will not sync with the
video.

What are my choices?
I'm compiling Xorg-6.8.2 as I write this to see if it helps.

Does anyone has any better experiences to share or anything like that??

Please Help
