Thank you, thank you. Now I see a simple path and used it.

First I clicked on that link Dan Knight passed out and did not like

But whoa! I just checked my incoming mail and now I'm confused again.
I went through Laurent's link, replied to confirm, and I see a message

iBook as Desktop

2006-02-14 Thread Al Poulin
I have the neat little 12 iBook G4/1.33 GHz, with Combo drive, which I
use for occasional genealogy research trips outside the house. Our
main Mac, which I share with my wife, is a G4 QuickSilver 733 with
Apple's 17 LCD. I particularly love that monitor.

In setting up another work desk in another room of the house, I could
try using the iBook, or I could buy a new iMac. I will be working (or
playing) hours at a time, sometimes all day with meal breaks.
Principal uses are e-mail, web browsing, word processing, researching
CD-ROMs for .pdf pages, and running the genealogy Reunion software.

Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen
PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard and
mouse? Happy with the small screen? Or do you hook up a larger
monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand?

Any helpful hints welcome! Oh, has anyone tried using a laptop like
this and found it best to move on to a conventional desktop or
tower/monitor setup?

Thank you,

Al Poulin

However, I have been sent very rude, abusive and even threatening

Please just take a breath before you send me abusive notes. I am a

Abuse to the list nanny or list mom, even if off-list, rates the same

not think it would be met with such strong opinions. Its almost like
its a apple vs pc debate. I just posted because I would think that
most of the users could utilize open source stuff without spend $$$ on
software that they may use a few times a week. Even student that don't
have a software program with their school would rather save the 200.00

My two cents again

I would exactly that too. Also, I might go ahead and update that OS to

The best strategy is two printers. For excellent black and white text
use a black and white laser printer. There are nice consumer models
out for $150 - $200 from HP and Brother. For color, you may get by
nicely with a cheaper color ink-jet. The real cost over the years is
for the ink-jet cartridges anyway. HP and Canon Pixma series get
consistently good reviews. The Consumer Reports of May 2005 gives
ratings on 17 ink-jets and 3 BW lasers. Machome magazine of Sep 2005
has reviews of ink-jets. Macworld.com has reviews on line and you can
loads more at PC World and PC Magazine. Google by brand name/model.

files from

It is best to focus on using an ethernet cable connection to establish
your network for file transfer. Use your crossover cable. For a
comprehensive view of the landscape, look at this Apple tech paper:
Mac OS X: About File Sharing

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461

Look up some of the links to other articles. In both the Apple web
support pages and in the Finder Help menus of both OS X and OX 9, look
up topics such as Ethernet, File Sharing, and maybe Users and Groups.
If you need to get involved with Users and Groups, look for a setting
to use Guest without bothering with a password. On the OS 9 machine,
look for using Chooser to use Ethernet and doing something with the
TCP/IP Control Panel. But you can do all this under the guidance of
the Apple web and Help info.

I've done this kind of thing several times. I cannot do it without
checking the Apple web and Help info.

Re: powerbooks, ibooks, g4, g5, what to buy?

2005-04-22 Thread Al Poulin
On Apr 22, 2005, J Schooster [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Hello All... I'm a newbie to this list, but have been
a Mac User since way back :) Your list was recommended
by a fellow user on another tech list, so here I am,
looking for some wise advice!
I currently use an old (grey) G3 desktop. I've had it
for years, and it's done what I needed it to, but I
really need to invest in a new system.
BIG SNIP
Not mentioned yet in all the excellent advice you've already seen: If
you buy a PowerBook, seriously consider AppleCare for warranty
purposes. You are accustomed to your old trusty desktop. Laptops are
inherently more fragile and trouble prone.

Bruce Johnson mentioned that the iMac G5s are damned portable. This
tests your intent to move from your comfortable desktop with a nice
keyboard to a laptop. The ergonomics are certainly different. You may
want to play a bit with the laptops at the Apple store. But as already
mentioned, you can plug a large monitor into a PowerBook, also a large,
USB keyboard.

Another thought: Buying an iMac G5 (or Mac Mini) and a laptop, both,
depending on your work habits and portability needs. You need a full
set of software and hardware power for your heavy work at home. Do you
need all of that on the road? Or will something less do as well on the
road?

Work up the cost of your Powerbook as you would want it, along with the
extras to make it comfortable to use at home. Then compare that with
the cost of an iMac (or Mac Mini) set up to do your heavy work. Will
the difference allow you to buy an iBook, or minimal 12 inch PowerBook
that you can carry around for demo purposes?

To get fancy on the road, you can have your laptop do remote access to
your home machine if necessary, with a package such as Timbuktu. When
my son visits with laptop, his Timbuktu gets him to his home machine,
slick as a pin with broadband at each end. It's as if his home machine
were in my house for what he can do with it.

More points to consider: Both the Mac Mini and the Powerbook have
slower hard drives than the iMac; some professional users consider this
to be significant. You do not say what hard drive(s) you have on your
G3. You should have at least two at home, one for backup purposes and
maybe scratch space. In one respect, having a home machine and a
PowerBook allow each to backup the other.

Note: The Mac Mini is for folks who already have the appropriate
monitor and keyboard. Monitor may require an adaptor. Cost for Mac
Mini, new monitor, and new keyboard puts you into the price range of an
iMac G5, but you have a lesser system.

Good luck in your decisions,
Al Poulin

Subject: another Lombard bites the dust (L2 cache is gone)
I hate replying to my own questions but I've figured out how to tell if
the L2 cache in my Lombard is bad.
Under apple system profiler my Lombard now reports no L2 cache
Then there's the message that pops up during start up:
The built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance.
So I need to figure out what to do next.
If the bad cache just slows the machine down I may just leave it as is,
it's mostly used by my 9 year old for web surfing and e-mail.
I could replace the processor but I'm concerned about the chance I'd
end
up with another flaky L2 cache.

I could look for a processor upgrade but it looks like it might be
cheaper to part out the Lombard and replace it with a Pismo.
It's not like I need a 900 Mhz G3.
There is another more radical option, my Dad is sending me a G4 cube
that he has replaced with a G4 iBook. I've always like the aesthetics
of
the G3 powerbooks but the cube is every bit as good looking and has the
added attraction of being free.

What do you think?

Re: New Power Book and OS 9

2005-02-23 Thread Al Poulin
Wally Hartley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I am currently using a Revision B Grape iMac (333 MHz) running OS
9.2.2 with
a 120 GB Hard Drive. I have not made the jump to OS X.

I want to upgrade to a PowerBook (probably the 17 inch) and it comes
with
Panther (OS 10.3.x) I believe. I still have a great many programs
which I
use all the time that will not work in OS X -- mostly because they
need to
be upgraded, but some do not offer anything beyond OS 9 anyway.

When OS X first came out there was a way to still run Classic
applications
within OS X or still boot the computer into OS 9 for those applications
needing it. I'm not totally up to speed on how this worked but I will
need
this capability until I can upgrade all my applications and even
beyond for
those not offering any upgrade path.

My initial questions are:
What is the last (newest) PowerBook which offered the capability to
still
run OS 9 applications?
Answering your specific question, new PowerBooks still run Classic
applications. If you are happy with your applications under 9.2.2,
those same applications will run in Classic mode with the PowerBook
booted in OS X (now Panther 10.3.x). You will have to install those
applications on the new machine. However, the new machines will not
boot into OS 9. To buy a Mac to boot into OS 9, you would have to find
an older, used model.

Frankly though, I do not know of a good reason from the applications
point of view, to insist of buying a Mac that can boot OS 9. But a
good reason might be buying used to save money. Another good reason
might be that your printer, scanner, and whatever else you have plugged
in to your old iMac may not run with OS X. You can check on that at
the equipment vendors' web sites for your models to see if there are OS
X drivers available for your equipment. Also, bear in mind that OS X
now includes many drivers for old printers that are no longer supported
by their makers. So the Apple list of drivers bears checking too.

Another angle on printers is that many sellers of Macintosh will throw
a cheap inkjet printer into the deal for free.
Which operating system did it ship with?
All the latest dual boot machines probably included OS 9.2, which is
what I received on my QuickSilver G4 made in 2001. It came with OS X
v10.0.4, I think, which was horrid. Other folks can say whether the
last dual boot machines came with 10.1 or 10.2.

Refer to:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209
for Macs that start up only in OS X. You can learn more by going to
the web site of this list's sponsor,
http://www.lowendmac.com/

Look under Computer Profiles on the right side of the home page for
specific models.

Re: iTunes in Norway on iBook from Denmark (Was: Setting up a prev. owned iBook)

Aase:
On Jan 19, 2005, Aase Marit Waage [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I live in Norway, and my obligation is to follow Norwegian laws.
According to the big red law book which I actually own copies of, we
are here allowed to own 1 copy of music etc. for our own use. If you
however choose to make copies to sell or distribute, then you are
breaking the law. That we still have this legislation here, has been
subject to a lot of discussion, but the law still says this, and I
really don`t think it will be changed anytime soon...
Actually I just read a long article about it, and there is no
disagreement when it comes to interpreting this law, it is crystal
clear (I promise you, the record companies do not like this one bit).
Bottom line - as a Norwegian citizen, keeping one copy for myself of
whatever it is in iTunes, is completely legal. I am fully aware of
the fact that the laws says otherwise e.g. in the US, but I really
don`t have any obligation towards US law except for when I am
there... :)
I appreciate very much that you bought you iBook with all its software
media. And I think I understand that you are in compliance with
Norwegian law. However, I also understand that the issue with iTunes
involves an formal agreement that someone had with Apple, in effect, a
license.

I do not know the terms of the license to which the previous owner of
your iBook in Denmark agreed. But I suspect it included statements
prohibiting or controlling further distribution or sale. If so, the
previous owner may have obligated himself to remove the music from the
iBook. By the same token, I suspect the license is mute regarding any
third party who may acquire the music, as in your case.

SNIP
I must say though, I was really disappointed to find out that iTunes
Music Store is not available for us here. I would love to use it, and
download music to enjoy. I figured that I could just access it e.g.
in the US, but I just get a window saying that it is not available in
my country...
I also suspect that Apple prevents you from accessing the Music Store
in Norway because of Norwegian law.

Well, another thing to consider is that any music downloaded off of
iTunes
Music Store won't be able to be accessed unless he keeps the former
user's
account. If the former owner is 'OK' with this then. But I
doubt it.
It's just sad that we even have to remind others of the obvious. I
will
continue my attempts at 'tikkun olam', but experience tells me that
it's an
uphill battle.

Tim
Now comes an interesting question. Are you enjoying the music? Or is
Tim correct in his statement that you cannot access the music on the
hard drive?

Yes indeed, you can change short names. Apple has a technical article

For me this would be the big one. Since you are going for the external

the mini-VGA? I do not know, but have the very vague impression that
the VGA entails some conversion of signal involving digital to analog
which degrades what your eyeball gets. Also, does the interface
dictate what models of monitor are available to you?

Do you need or even want this?

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk + OS 9 and OS X partition anecdote

2005-01-05 Thread Al Poulin
Sorry to see this tale. But it has been told before in these lists.
I had good results in the Disk Utility/Partition panel by checking the
little box at: Install Mac OS 9
Disk Drivers If this option is not selected, this device cannot be
used by a computer running Mac OS 9. This option does not affect
Classic.

I have two internal drives and reformatted both for OS X 10.3. For my
old OS 9.2.2 System Folder, apps, and data, I copied from one drive to
the newly formatted one (one partition) and then for backup purposes
shuffled it all back to the original drive, now formatted with three
partitions. All went well.

David Bjur [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
One thing I learned the hard way: I partitioned the drive and
formatted with the Disk Utility from OS X.3, but then found I was
unable to mount the partitions in OS 9. I was able to boot into OS 9
with a firewire drive (my old internal drive in an external firewire
enclosure, also from OWC) and format the partitions in OS 9 and update
the drivers. This was after I installed OS X on one partition and
restored my OS 9 data to the other, so the install/restore time was
wasted by the reformat.
I then found I couldn't boot from the restored OS 9 partition; I
finally did a fresh install starting with OS 9.0.4 and updating through
9.2.2, then restored my OS 9 data using the OS X Disk Utility and
leaving erase destination unchecked.
Now everything works wonderfully. If you are planning a dual-boot,
multiple-partition disk, I hope my experience helps. If anyone has a
better procedure than my trial-and-error debacle, please share it with
us.

It seems that many of the answers flowing here on this New Year's Day
are missing the point of the question. The original poster's father's
wife is apparently a middle-aged to older person. But we do not know
whether her corrected eyesight is 20/20 or 20/100.

Yes, a 12 inch screen may be a serious hindrance for someone with less
than average eyesight. There are many eye conditions that will
preclude use of a 12 inch screen at 1024 x 768 resolution. In one
example, a person with cataracts may fail reading that 12 inch screen,
but the same person after cataract removal and artificial lens
replacement with rejuvenated vision at 20/20 or better can now enjoy
that 12 incher.

ancient history by now, but why take a chance? Apple never claims to
perfectly test all update releases with all possible hardware and
applications combinations. The untimate test for each update is in our
hands, yours and mine.

Then I download the updates that I want, one by one, and proceed with
installing each, one by one, in my own good time. I make sure the machine
is running ok with one update before I install another one.

Take a good look at the Apple tech documents about the iBook Firmware and
Airport. If you do not use Applescript, why bother? CarbonLib may be
useful in support of specific applications, but you'd never know it except
for reading the documentation about it.

With OS 9.1, I would not bother unless you receive Microsoft Word documents

Theoretically, receiving e-mail can pose a virus threat, but I have not used

Maybe the HD was manufactured after the date of the computer. You might get
a clue by tracking System Profiler info on model and serial number and
checking things from there. Or maybe you can expose a physical label with

Re: Drive Setup 2.0.7 question Top vs. Bottom First vs. Next??

2004-08-27 Thread Al Poulin
Let's avoid the term priority.

D. G. Bowie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Here's my Drive Setup question: When you initialize and divide a
drive into two partitions with Drive Setup, does one of the
partitions take priority as the first or top partition?

The first or top partition is simply the one that is physically closest to
the center or hub of the drive. Graphically, it appears at the top of the
Drive Setup display. This has nothing to do with priority.

  I
recently took my Macintosh Powerbook G3 (Lombard, 333 MHz, with 384
RAM and 40 GB hard drive) in for repair after seeing this message for
the first time and experiencing random crashes and freezes:

The built-in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance.

I defer to experts here. I suspect the diagnostic points to your 512 KB
Level 2 cache which sits on the motherboard to temporarily hold data that
may be quickly needed by the processor.

The fix-it shop ran various diagnostic texts, but didn't find a
 memory or hardware problem.

What tools did they use? TechToolsPro? This has a test for the L1 and L2
caches.

They told me that I had installed OSX
(Panther) on the wrong partition. (By way of explanation, most of
the time I still use 9.2.2, since all my music software is
pre-Panther, but I've had OSX installed on a second partition for
some time now, anticipating a future move up to it.)

So, I paid their standard $50 servicing charge, grateful for the
advice, and brought my Mac home. Now, after backing up all my files
onto another computer, I'm surprised to discover that the
partitioning scheme I had been using appears fine. In other words,
in the Drive Setup custom setup screen, the Panther partition
(7939 MB) sits on top of the 9.2.2 Powerbook partition (29,958 MB).
I wonder if perhaps the partition on the bottom is really the one I
need to re-install Panther on? If not, I wonder if I've received
 dubious or random advice?

Could be if they were thinking you have an 8 GB, first partition limit on
your Lombard. Or they may be thinking that your OS X does not have enough
head room to work. How much free space do you have in that volume? I would
not feel comfortable with less than 2 or 3 GB.

In looking through the Drive Setup
documentation, I find no mention of any partition taking priority as
the first or the top partition; I've always assumed that the
Startup Disk control panel in 9.2.2 dictates priority.

If you have Systems installed on more than one partition, Startup Disk will
select the volume/partition. I don't see this as a priority, just a
selection.

I do intend to give the Panther partition more space than the 8 GB
it's had up until now, but I still don't know whether to install
Panther on the bottom or top partition. I've been told it matters,
 but I'm confused.

The Lombard is not the same as the PowerBook G3 Series which requires that
the OS X be installed on the first partition no larger than 8 GB. When you
first installed OS X, my may have been confused by the
ReadBeforeYouInstall text in the section about hardware compatibility.

Some folks recommend rebuilding your hard drive. That is, use your restore

chances of bad blocks on the drive and file corruption. Pay attention to

Yes they both do that. But the Install CD gives you the OS, and I believe
nothing more. The restore CD set wipes out your hard drive, reinitializes
it, and installs ALL the software that was on the computer out of the
factory. There have been a few exceptions to this. iTunes music may be
missing. I've seen slightly different versions of small bits of software.

said you have an iBook. Is that a brand new, current model or an older,
refurbished or used model? If new, that iBook will not boot in OS 9, and
neither would the CD.

If an older model iBook, what particular model is it? Also describe the CD
you are talking about. Is it an Apple OS CD or is it a copy? If it is an
Apple CD, is it an Install or a Restore CD? I think some restore CDs
will not boot in OS 9, even on an OS 9 bootable machine. They boot in OS X
and the OS 9 System Folder gets installed from there.

Re: 2 512 sticks vs. 1 1-GB stick

2004-07-03 Thread Al Poulin
Claire:

Whatever you do, first compare Apple prices with those at reputable vendors
such as crucial.com. Crucial has an excellent, very helpful web site. You
can find other memory vendors at the lowendmac.com web site which sponsors
this e-list. I know, I know, that will complicate the answers to your
questions.

Claire Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 I'm ordering a 17 powerbook. Should I get 2 sticks of 512 RAM, or 1
stick of 1GB RAM? Is there an advantage to spreading the 1 GB over the
two slots? I'm thinking that if I do the 1GB stick in one slot, then I
can add another one later and not have to mess with the one already
 there.

If you want 1GB at the beginning and do NOT want more later, it is cheaper
to buy 2 sticks of 512. And it is cheaper to buy the second stick from
Crucial or other vendor rather than from Apple. Your manual should give
precise instructions on how to install. Another advantage over one stick
is that, if one of two sticks fails, you still can limp along with the
remaining good stick.

If you know or even suspect that you will want to add RAM over the initial
1GB later on, then you should order the PB with a one-stick 1GB RAM and
leave the second slot empty for later use.

Second question: Can I have 512 in one slot and 1 GB in the other,

YES.

 or
 do they have to match?

NO.

And if you decide to have 1.5GB at the beginning, just order the PB with the
512MB stick and buy the extra 1GB from Crucial or other vendor.

2004-07-03 Thread Al Poulin
Claire:

Reputable companies like Crucial do the matching for you. Do not worry. In
fact most memory vendors give money back or replace sticks, no question,
when problems occur. Even when sticks were ok with OS 9 and later proved
to be inhospitable to OS X, vendors made things good for the Mac owners.
Most sticks have a life-time warranty.

Claire Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

One more question on the RAM issue. What if I get the minimum ram, a
512 stick, then order another 512 stick from Crucial later on? Will
they be compatible? I don't know why I seem to have stuck in my head
the idea that your RAM sticks need to match. Any advice?

OS 9 on all new machines is for running classic only. If you have your

install classic. Just remember all new machines only boot into OS X.

No direct experience here. But reading between the lines, I feel you do not

There are also the new G4 ibooks too. Small Dog Electronics, the sponsor of

I think you can safely update the memory on your Lombard. You just have to
make sure that it's a low profile chip and will work in a Lombard. 512MB low
profile chips for the Lombard might be expensive, though. I'm currently
using 512MB total in my Pismo and I find it fine...

Oh, oh! Some people have had trouble with more than 384MB with OS X. It
seems this depends on brand of RAM. Better check things out very closely.

It seems that Laurent Daudelin has personal experience with a Pismo, not a

power to the screen. The hinge scissors the bundle repeatedly until it
literally starts to cut the wires. During this time you get the flickering
screen problem that Apple tech only ever advised the useless reset the PMU

Which iBooks are we talking about here, in terms of MHz and year/month of

Unless you intend to do heavy Photoshop work, graphics intensive stuff,

I am not saying that anybody should or should not buy AppleCare. And the
testimonials here about saving hundreds and even close to a thousand dollars
on repairs are very impressive.

But there is another way to look at this. AppleCare must be a money making
business for Apple. Would anybody believe that Apple loses money on their
AppleCare coverage at the prices they charge? I doubt that. I think Apple
makes money on AppleCare. There must be many more people who buy AppleCare
and do not use it for repairs than those who do.

So I believe it boils down to whether you want to self-insure your Mac or
not.

Some of the gurus here will have to confirm. But I seem to remember reading
here a few weeks ago that the ribbon cables for the drives on the Lombard
and the WallStreet are different. You need to bring over the cable as well
as the drive to the other machine.

Re: 9.1 problem

2003-12-23 Thread Al Poulin
Dan Scanlan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

A friend running OS X on some stuff, but mostly 9.1 is suddenly
having a problem booting into 9.1 from a dead start. Wierdest
thing... Boots fine into 9.1 with extensions off, but hangs up on
booting with even only the Apple basic set of extensions on -- hangs
up before any icons appear along the bottom of the screen. Also, when
trying to go into Classic from OS X, the finder says the disk doesn't
have 9.1 on it, although it does. I have already reinstalled 9.1. OS
X doesn't recognize it! One more clue: When we try to boot up in 9.1,
the message always comes up that the machine was improperly shut
down, when in fact it was not. Seems like some register isn't getting
 reset, of sumptin.

You did not say whether the system was previously stable for a few months or
so. Also, we do not know what version of OS X your friend has, or whether
your friend has just installed a new version of OS X.

Apple issued OS 9.2 as a free, downloadable update, specifically to support
Classic operations from OS X. OS 9.2.2 is now the standard for any dual
boot computer running OS X. Even OS X 10.3 Panther came with a few software
updates for OS 9.2. Take a look at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186
for 9.2.2. You may have to stage several updates in series to climb from
9.1 to 9.2. to 9.2.1, then 9.2.2.

Hope this helps.

Don't want to ask a stupid question, but do you mean it will not start up
from a boot CD or from the 20 gig drive which you have formatted for
Macintosh and loaded with an OS?

Re: Wait for 10.3.1? (was External Firewire HD issue ...)

I've also been holding off buying a Family Pack of Panther until the
CD's are burned with the 10.3.1 (and have the .1 update). Is there any
logic to that or should I just go ahead and get it. I have a broadband
connection, so downloading or burning a CD of the update is not an
issue. I'd just like to have the most current copy of the OS ...
according to the rumour sites, yet another release (.2) is about ready
to come out that solves even a few more items.

I have the same question. Any answers out there? A guy at the Tysons
Corner, Va. Apple Store this morning told me that it will take quite some
time for the initial production of 10.3 to run out. He said Jaguar 10.2 CDs
made it only up to 10.2.3 or 10.2.4 while the updates on-line went to
10.2.8.

After struggling with this for 2 days, I tried loading Jaguar and it went
without a hitch and is running fine.

Someone said that Panther needs more space on the hard drive to install.
