Wouldn't the processor have to be running for the HW test CD to run at all? As well as
at least a portion of VRAM be functional for video to be displayed? Is this HW Test CD

Re: UCE from list

2004-02-09 Thread Andrew Johnson
I second that motion, while I dont have a problem with spam really, the
practice of our addresses being posted at large to the internet would
seem to be a veritable smorgasbord for spammers. I too, respectfully
ask that those in charge of the list archives look into scrubbing our
addresses from the archives.

Thanks,

lists. Yet it accounts for 137 of the 168 UCEs I've received in the

I doubt spammers are subscribed to the list. I doubt listusers are
selling email addresses. I have LITTLE doubt that the web archive
maintained at http://mail.maclaunch.com/lists/ is being scanned and
addresses harvested. Our email addresses are being revealed there to
the whole world, with every post we make.

I respectfully suggest to the listmom that whenever a new mailing list
mechanism is finally established for the LEM-related lists, that he
find a way to either restrict access to the list archive to those

Then I'll re-subscribe with a new email address and kill off this

Wallstreet as Media center

2004-02-08 Thread Andrew Johnson
So I have a (by all accounts) ancient Wallstreet 250MHz laptop that I
want to use as a hook-up for getting my iTunes into my home stereo. My
question is can I use an S-Video to Composite adapter (such as the one
that was supplied with my TiBook) to output the video to a television
(the built-in 13.3" screen finally bucked the kicket)

(as an aside, does anyone know a place where I can get a replacement
video cable for the 13.3" LCD that isn't $70-140, most places charge
exorbitantly high prices for these simple ribbon cables)

Thanks,
Andrew

OT: Need Airport Card

2004-02-05 Thread Andrew Johnson
I know I should post this to the swap list, but efforts to join and
post to that list have been constant frustration.

So, I need an original Airport card for use in an iBook 900MHz. I'd
like to spend ~$50 all said and done. If anyone has a spare one they
wouldn't mind parting with, or know a source for purchasing them
cheaply online, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Re: Yo-yo PSU

2003-09-26 Thread Andrew Johnson
Speaking as an electrical engineer, voltages of any magnitude can be
dangerous if mishandled. If the cabling/housing of the yo-yo was
blackened by the fault, it could have just as easily ignited. While 24v
isn't likely to injure you (unlike, say, 270v 3-phase AC) it can make
things happen that can.

If anyone would like to test this theory, just go out to your car and
short your battery (only 12v!) with a large metal object, the resulting
fire should serve as proof enough.

Re: Wallstreet wireless

2003-09-13 Thread Andrew Johnson
I've been pretty satisfied with my Linksys 4-port 10/100
switch/wireless router. The only thing that hasn't worked well has been
WEP.

as for which card is best for a wallstreet... if you're under OS9, the
Orinoco cards (gold or silver) are the best you can find since they
operate seamlessly with the Apple Airport software. Under OSX... well
it's a little more dicey. I use a Netgear 401RA card (maybe it's
NA401RA) it's not a bad card in and of itself. The real problem is in
the fact that one must use the open source wireless driver from
wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net or purchase the driver made by IOXperts
($20)

I have heard rumblings of there being certain 802.11g cards that are
officially supported by the Airport Extreme 3.1 software, but I believe
that it may only be PCI cards for powermacs...

Re: Wallstreet screen darkness

2003-09-02 Thread Andrew Johnson
This is often a sign of a dead or "previously dead" PRAM battery.
Booting into OS9 will correct the problem within the PRAM and allow the
computer to continue to function normally when in OS X.

However if the symptoms return when the computer is disconnected from
AC power and the main battery is removed for only a short time, then
your PRAM battery is dead. Leaving the computer hooked to AC will
recharge the battery in a day's time or so usually, but it is possible
that the battery is wholly dead and will need to be replaced.

The grey screen with tbe big Apple logo looks fine, but after that it
is like the brightness was turned all the way down. Pressing the
brightness button usually brings it back to normal, but it is a
nuisance and it does not work when waking from sleep (we have to
restart the machine).

I remember seeing mention of something like this in some newer models
(Lombards or Pismos, maybe) and the solution seemed to involve booting
into open firmware, which, afaik, is not present in the wallstreet

I wonder if there is some preference file gone awry that I should
trash or some other solution (perhaps involving booting into OS 9)
that the knowledgeable people on this list may care to suggest.

TiBook 667 eats CDs

2003-08-02 Thread Andrew Johnson
Hi everyone! I'm back from my trip to Germany and the ol' TiBook DVI
performed famously except for 2 eensy weensy problems I had while on my
trip:

1) I borrowed a colleague's PC Card Compact Flash adapter just to test
out how it compared to using my Canon Powershot s200's USB cable.
Everything was fine until I unmounted the volume and then ejected the
card (I didnt stop the card though) upon removing the card, Finder
restarted, no sweat though. But the second time I used it, I unmounted
the volume and then stopped the card. Upon stopping the card, 10.2.7
kernel panicked. (much to the amusement of my anti-mac friend who
swiftly took a snapshot for the memories)

2) when burning a CD-RW, the burn failed and the system would then not
eject the disc, I ended up having to restart the computer with the
trackpad button depressed to retrieve the disc. This is not the first
time my system has eaten a piece of writable media without wanting to
give it up.

Has anyone had these problems before or come up with a solution?

Mit freundlichen Gruessen,
Andrew

Re: MacWireless announces Airport buy-back program

2003-06-12 Thread Andrew Johnson
I personally wish a company would create an 'airport-slot compatible'
card, whether it be 802.11g and/or a higher power card (100-200mW) but
no one seems to want to make a card that only owners from the Pismo up
through the TiBooks (plus iBooks) can use... oh well... I guess I'm
satisfied with 802.11b and less than optimal range until I buy my next
PowerBook someday in the future.

-Andrew

$79 to buy the original AirPort card plus $90 to buy the MacWireless
card less the $30 rebate comes out to $139. I don't see how that
"reduces the overall cost of a wireless network connection". Plus then
you give up your PC Card slot.

On my wallstreet, (Powerbook G3 Series) the brightness controls would
behave strangely if some settings had not been saved in PRAM by OS9.
When the PRAM battery was dead, this would result in odd behavior
whenever the computer lost battery power (since there was no PRAM
backup) the solution was installing a new PRAM battery, entering OS9 to
save the displays control panel settings and then restarting into OS X.

Could it be that the AlBook's broken keys are related to people
thinking that they're like the TiBooks (and iBooks) and are trying to
forcibly remove the keyboards?

OT: G3 PowerBook names [was Re: DVD-ROM for CD equiped Lombard?]

I would say the the code names make things easier usually, when someone
says wallstreet, I know what they're talking about. But if someone said
"I've got a PowerBook G3 that has problem X..." They could be talking
about the WallStreet (PowerBook G3 Series, multiple bus speeds, 233,250
and 300 mhz variants I believe) the WallStreet II (PowerBook G3 Series,
66MHz bus speed) or the Lombard, (PowerBook G3) which had the bronze
keyboard and faster features (not to mention USB as well) I think the
code names are the saving grace of Macintosh products. How difficult
would it be if every computer was named "PowerMac" and had no defining
features?

while I realize that the older G3's needed the PC Card to properly
decode DVDs, is the ability to view DVDs on newer systems such as the
iBook (dual usb) a function of the fact that their video chips (Radeon,
etc...) are supported for video acceleration in OS X, or is it that the
G3 processor is faster so that it is all done in software? If I were to
drop a 500MHz G3 in my wallstreet, would it be possible to view DVDs
under OS X?

the -2 RAM is CAS-2, while the -3 is (surprise!) CAS-3, the CAS latency
is the rating of how quickly each column of memory in the chip can be
accessed (CAS=Column access strobe)

As for why you're having problems, I'm looking into my crystal ball and
seeing you sticking the 2 256MB SO-DIMMs in and recoiling in horror as
ASP only shows 256MB total instead of the 512MB you expected. If this
is the case, it is my experience (with a WallStreet 250) that they
don't like PC133 ram, and that PC100 works perfectly for some strange
reason, despite the fact that PC133 is supposed to be fully compatible
with PC100/66... if this isnt the case, well I don't know then.

From what I understand, the wallstreet is an 'old world' machine,
meaning that the boot rom is just that, rom. "New World" machines (like
my TiBook) actually store the contents of the boot rom on disk (correct
me if I am wrong.) Since this is an old world machine, the os 9 loader
begins and loads the software that boots os x. On my Wallstreet, this
sequence of Happy Mac -> Apple Logo only happens after a PRAM reset, if
this is happening to you every time you shut down, your PRAM battery
may have gone south.

The Wallstreet is most definitely supported as an OS X machine, the
Kanga is the only G3 based computer that isn't supported (and therefore
will not install at all w/o assistance) AFAIK. I run 10.2.4 on my
Wallstreet 250 and it runs like a top, installed directly from the 10.2
disc that came with my TiBook, havent had any major problems with it
since (although it isnt quite as stable as the TiBook)

From what I've seen, the TiBook might actually have the easiest hard
drive to remove/install. Since all you have to do is remove the bottom
panel (only a few T8s) and then lift out the drive, it seems rather
simple compared to the iBook or the Wallstreet where you have to
perform major surgery to even get to the drive.

I don't know how similar the Lombard is to the WallStreet internally,
but with the display problems I've had with my 13.3" Wallstreet (a
notorious model for display issues) I've taken it apart a few times...
So basically if you are able and brave enough to crack open the laptop,
this is what might help (note that my experience is with the Wallstreet:

Take off Keyboard
Take off clutch cover (black plastic panel which holds
power/volume/brightness keys
you should see two copper-colored ribbon cables on opposite side of the
logic board that go to the screen.
you might want to check and see if they are securely connected.

If this doesnt fix it, the problem is either in the ribbon cables
themselves (likely where they coil around the clutches) or where the
cable connect to the actual LCD panel in the display.

hope this helps

Yeah It's nothing snappy, but I run 10.2.4 on a 250Mhz Wallstreet (with

Having just read over the Service Manual entry for the TiBook (GE)'s
DVD-ROM, it looks like the optical drive in the TiBook is a very
fragile creature. I would only attempt this surgery if you both a) have
experience inside the TiBook (my experience ends at tearing down a
13.3" Wallstreet) and b) have the illustrated tear-down guide so you
know exactly what to do in what order.

I personally hope I never have to take my baby (a TiBook 667 DVI) apart.

Re: Question on Graphics ChipSets (Was: Considering CPU upgrades...)

2003-01-31 Thread Andrew Johnson
Take this information with a grain of salt, but in my experience, all
of ATi's mobile graphics adapters are always in the Mx series, where x
is a single digit number. I used to have an Old Dell Latitude CPx
laptop (happily traded for my PowerBook now) and it had a RageM1 chip
for its graphics. As you've seen your Pismo has an M3, while my TiBook
667 (DVI) has a Radeon Mobility 7500, aka RageM7 according to my system
profiler. Anyone with a SuperDrive TiBook care to toss in which RageMx
you have in your 'book?

I don't think that's a very safe statement given the 2 month
turn-around between the 1GHz PowerBook 15" and the new AlBooks. The
general feeling I get is that Apple wants this to be a very big year,
and that might mean that all the old rules (6month wait times, etc...)
don't necessarily apply.

If you completely discharge your Li-Ion battery, (just for the sake of
discharging only to then re-charge) you will shorten the life of your
battery in comparison to recharging it when you need it. Only Nickel
based battery chemistries suffer from the memory effect which is
prevented by the discharge-recharge cycle you described.

Re: Related Question (was Re: Reviving Pismo Battery?)

2003-01-23 Thread Andrew Johnson
Taken from http://www.motorola.com/ies/ESG/testlab/article1.htm:

"Depth of discharge (DOD) is defined as the level to which battery
voltage is taken during discharge. For instance, 100 percent DOD means
that the battery voltage has been taken down to the lowest level
recommended by suppliers. Twenty percent DOD means that 20 percent of
the battery capacity has been removed. This level of DOD is often
referred to as a shallow discharge. Discharging to less than the
recommended voltage is known as overdischarge. The shallower the
discharge, the more cycles the battery will provide. This is true for
all battery chemistries.

The relationship between DOD and cycle life is logarithmic. In other
words, the number of cycles yielded by a battery goes up exponentially
the lower the DOD. Research studies have shown that the typical
cellular phone user depletes their battery about 25 to 30 percent
before recharging. Testing has shown that at this low level of DOD a
lithium-ion battery can expect between 5 and 6 times the cycle numbers
of a battery discharged to the one hundred percent DOD level
continuously."

In summary, using your Li-Ion battery for 5 minutes while moving
between outlets isn't going to adversely affect battery life.

Re: TiBook Stand

2003-01-23 Thread Andrew Johnson
My iCurve Review:

Arrived quickly after shipping (was initially out of stock for a week.)
The packaging was attractive, reminded me of when I first got my TiBook.

My TiBook is now being held at an excellent height, and looks
absolutely gorgeous. This stand really belongs in the Apple store (I
was shocked when I learned they didn't carry it)
It is held much higher than either of the Roadtools products (the
coolpad and the smaller, non-stackable one) and has cleared a
considerable amount of room from my desk (also makes me less nervous
about things rubbing up against the case and marring it) There is
plenty of space under the unit to hold a small firewire drive such as
the firefly or firelight.

The book seems securely held by the four rubber pads on the top surface
of the iCurve, however due to extremely slight warpage in my iCurve,
there is one pad that doesn't make 100% contact with the bottom of the
TiBook, even with this subobtimal connection, the computer hasn't
budged a millimeter over the past 3 days.

All in all, a great buy, I couldn't be happier. (Esp. since I got it on
special for $35 plus free shipping!)

I believe there is a site somewhere that illustrates a complete
teardown of a wallstreet, it is considerably more difficult to reach
than the ram or processor card. It is located directly under the wrist
rest of the keyboard (in fact it is attached to the bottom side of the
top half of the case)

This makes it so you have to completely remove the wrist rest to
install a new battery (actually put a used one in mine, but it was $10
vs. $50/60) to do this I believe you have to completely remove the
display as well, although I'm not 100% sure on that one.

Re: Subject: Wallstreet power problem

2003-01-21 Thread Andrew Johnson
Getting to the heatsink on a Wallstreet isnt difficult, but it is more
work than would be on a TiBook.

1) Remove Both bay devices
2) Release the keyboard latches located in the bays (one in each)
3) Flip the keyboard over onto the trackpad to reveal the 'guts' of the
wallstreet
4) remove a philips head screw located in the middle of a metal panel
(there may be a second screw holding this panel in

The wallstreet's HS was originally attached by a thermal pad (think
styrofoam) if this pad has disintegrated and is no longer attached to
the processor, you will probably want to find an alternative method of
attaching the sink.

Also, you said you reset the PRAM, i had strange problems with my
wallstreet when the PRAM battery died. It would only boot on AC power
the first time and then you could shut it off and restart on battery if
you desired, but if you lost battery power at all (ie, if the battery
went to 0% or was removed) you would have to reattach to AC to restart
it.

The reason I mention this is because when first started on AC power,
the fan would activate and go through a more lengthy startup procedure
than normal. The fix for this was buying a new PRAM battery.

In summary I would check:
1) The heatsink
2) The PRAM battery
3) CPU card contact

Sorry for being so lengthy

Making any change (you can then change it back) and then click OK (or
save changes, whatever it says) this should write the changes into the
PRAM, you can then reboot into OS X and everything should be hunky dory.

TiBook Stand

Re: 12" PB vs iBook

2003-01-08 Thread Andrew Johnson
I personally am a little disappointed in the 12" (while I lust
constantly over the 17")

The more I look at it, the more I think apple could have done better on
the 12", I can understand the lack of the pc card slot, but no lit
keyboard? no firewire 800? and the big ones: no L3, no 1GB memory?

This 'book has to have been based off the iBook more than in just terms
of casing, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that there was a very limited
amount of dev time devoted to the 12", more of just a "here, make this
iBook look like a PB"

Aside from my gripes, I still think it's a pretty neat looking 'book,
just doesn't have what I need. (whereas my still beautiful TiBook 667
DVI does)

maybe someday I'll spring for a superdrive...

-Andrew

(And GAWD, that 17" is a beautiful monster)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there still is a resource fork in OS X,
it's simply a matter of file association data is not limited to the
resource fork. that's why you can save a word document without the .doc
extension and it will still retain it's association with word.

Re: Laptop Bags (Was: Re: My Accident)

2002-12-20 Thread Andrew Johnson
There's another problem with Brenthaven in my opinion, all of their
bags a) look the same and b) are not at all stylish.
The only one that bucks the trend is the executive backpack, but even
that is very boringly styled.

I personally use an inCase bag for my TiBook, it fits perfectly and has
protected the book well. I don't abuse it, but it definitely protected
the book from a glass bottle that fell from a foot above it (I was
expecting at least a small dent.) but she came out unscathed!

1 caveat: you can't carry much more than the book, the white powerbrick
(the ufo one won't fit in the side pocket) and some misc. adapters
(vga-dvi, svga-composite)

but then again it is designed to be able to be put in another bag.

Now that's really odd, because I have a walstreet 250 which I run
10.2.2 on also. The only time I see ol' happy mac is when the pram
battery has failed and it has to do what I can only assume is reload
the boot extensions which allow it to boot os x. (Since the Wallstreet
is an 'Old World' architecture machine, it's ROM is not in any kind of
flash memory, therefore something must be done to soft-overwrite the
rom to show the apple logo instead of happy mac.) but like I said, I
only see happy mac once, then on every subsequent boot it's just grey
apple.

10.2 will work with any hardware that 10.1 did, however you do not get
the Quartz Extreme enhancement with cards that have <16mb of vram. On
that note, the iBook's Video card cannot be replaced, leaving you the
only option of upgrading your iBook to a newer revision if you want QE
goodness.

Network storage is what I backup to, it's the cheapest option given
that I already have the infrastructure in place. And if I don't have
access to it and absolutely have to get it copied I can drop it to CD,
if your wife gets the oh-so-beautiful 1GHz w/ superdrive... there's
always DVD-R albeit an expensive option at $5 a disc for apple's media.

Linux on TiBook 800 booting to 667

2002-11-26 Thread Andrew Johnson
I read somewhere that G4-800s running linux failed to boot up in 800
but rather defaulted to 667, does anyone have a link to any information
regarding this? I know there was a site up a few months back that spoke
of success getting Ti800s to boot up in 800. I was wondering if that
could be applied to the Ti667 in a similar manner to give me that extra
boost when I need it.

Wow that actually worked, my Wallstreet is now a fully functional OSX
machine now. Here's what I did if anyone else wants to follow in my
footsteps

1) Installed 9.2.2 on the hard drive (had never installed it since I
wiped the machine) from the copy that came with my TiBook.
2) Rebooted into OS9 and set all the display properties so that they
would be written to PRAM for certain.
3) Rebooted into OSX

I knew something was different when the "blue loading screen" of OSX
(where the bar fills up) had the backlight activated... wooha!

Thanks again!

Wallstreet Sleep Problems

2002-11-17 Thread Andrew Johnson
I know this question has been discussed before, but I couldn't find
anything in the archives, so here goes:

I have a Wallstreet 250Mhz (13.3" screen from hell yadda yadda) with
96mb ram and the original 4gb drive. On a whim I installed 10.2 on it
and immediately was plagued with the "sleep of death" problem (when you
return from sleep the LCD backlight is non-functional) hoping that
10.2.2 would address this problem, I installed that update.. but still
no luck. Has anyone had any luck with getting Jaguar to behave on
Powerbook G3 systems in this regard?

(and before anyone berates me for putting OSX on this laptop, it's only
a hobby machine, my TiBook 667 is my main workhorse)

on a similar note, are their any PPC emulators for mac? (ie is there
anything where I can host multiple virtual macs inside my own physical

TiBook DVI Sound problems

2002-10-21 Thread Andrew Johnson
Sometimes when I detach my powerbook from its external speakers (it's
mostly used as a desktop computer) the sound system will just die.
iTunes will not play music (I can hit play but the counter stays at

sounds, and the real kicker that is when plugged my speakers back in,
my session died, plopping me back out to the login screen. Does anyone

Re: travelstar

New travelstars (and other hard drives) have what they call "fluid
dynamic bearings" which are insanely quiet compared to the older
technology. (me being an electrical rather than mechanical engineer,
please don't ask me to explain why) all I know is that my old Dell
laptop had a 6gb travelstar which sounded like LAX on a busy day and I
have to put my ear against the case of my 667 (DVI) to hear anything
(thats with the 40gb drive offered by apple)

Just another reason I love my PowerBook...
