Re: Firewall

2005-12-28 Thread Jan Musil
Michael,

before you buy anything think about where you want to put the firewall
(could be multiple places). I have small network and have firewall on
the DSL modem, WiFi router and then on each machine. Now that may be a
little too paranoid (but that is what keeps me sleeping in the night).

You may want to check if your router (or cable/DSL modem) already has
a firewall built in and enable it (if it is not running yet). Then on
your Mac enable the firewall in System Preferences - Sharing as
somebody suggested in another reply. Then make sure to update your
Windows XP to SP2 level. Then enable built-in Windows firewall in
Control Panel --> Security or purchase external firewall if you want
(I use Symantec, but that is just my personal preference as I rely on
their antivirus software and their product bundles are fairly well
priced - by the way Best Buy has disount on most Symantec bundles this
week so you may spend as little as 30 bucks for entire suite of Norton
SystemWorks).

Re: tracking wireless activity

2005-10-25 Thread Jan Musil
I second that. I actually use the first 2 measures only at the
moment. The

reason being that not broadcasting SSID prevents my powerbooks from
connecting automatically to the given network as soon as Airport is
turned

on.

Is there a known way around this, like setting somewhre the name of
the

network to connect to? I haven't found such an option yet.

In Tiger you can setup preferred networks, but in 10.4.1 it did not
work well and since then I did not have time to experiment with it. I
had the same problems with my PowerBooks - they were unable to find
the network after I woke them up. You may try that and if it does not
work continue to broadcast the SSID (as I still do), but I live in a
house and even the closest neighbor does not see my network.

Re: tracking wireless activity

2005-10-25 Thread Jan Musil

case I would suggest you to enable wireless security at least via
WEP (although this is not very strong security it should keep
people out for few days). You can also consider enabling MAC
address filter (MAC address is unique ID of each network card -
yes people can find

actually, a while ago I read of new software that did a predictive
key hash or something, and the needed number of packets to decrypt
the WEP went down from several hundred thousand to often just a few
thousand or less; 5 min WEP cracks could occur.

I figure, with MAC filtering, at least if they clone your MAC,
their bandwidth will be poor if you are online as well :)

Yeah that's right the WEP can be cracked fairly quickly (I believe
that someone was able o crack it in less than 15 minutes of listening
to traffic) if people assemble enough packets. I would suggest using
WPA, but then the Wallstreet may not connect as I believe that WPA
works only with Airport Extreme (at least I had some issues few years
back connecting with 802.11B to WPA protected network). But maybe
Apple already fixed that.

Best is to combine at least the three items many people listed here:

1. WEP or WPA protection on the network
2. MAC address filtering for WS network
3. Stop broadcasting your SSID to the world

You could consider monitoring IP addresses on your network from time
to time to see if you keep people out.

Re: tracking wireless activity

2005-10-24 Thread Jan Musil

Hi Rick,

the best way to figure out if somebody is using your DSL without your
permission is to check the number of IP addresses that your wireless
router assigned to clients. You can do that on the router - you
should be able to connect to its IP address via browser on http:// or
https:// port. If there are more more addresses assigned than you
have computers then it is clear that someone uses your badwidth. In
any case I would suggest you to enable wireless security at least via
WEP (although this is not very strong security it should keep people
out for few days). You can also consider enabling MAC address filter
(MAC address is unique ID of each network card - yes people can find
ways to change their MAC address, but this is another level of
protection of your network). If you enable the MAC address filter be
sure to add any new equipment that you add later (new computer,
network printer, etc. otherwise they will be unable to connect to
your network). And lastly you can disable broadcast of the network
SSID which should help hide your network (again this is only weak
protection as people that already know your SSID are likel to connect
wihout problems). You may need to change your SSID to something else
before you disable SSID broadcast.

By the way securing your network is very good idea as you could be
held responsible for what people do from your segment of the network
- I hope your neighbors are no spammers or crackers... Not to scare you.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards, Jan

Re: security on wireless router

2005-07-02 Thread Jan Musil
I guess the answer depends on where you live. If you are in a house
that is relatively far from other houses which prevents people from
snooping on your net from comfort of their homes you will be fine
with WEP and if you want MAC address filtering (adding little more
steps for the hacker). If you have only AirPort Express or other WiFi
G machines connected you could use WPA insted of WEP (it is little
more secure). I use WEP + MAC address filtering on my network which
is sufficient in my neighborhood. I figured that there are not many
hackers around me. But if I lived in large city I would probably have
something stronger setup.

Flickering display in Tiger

2005-05-10 Thread Jan Musil
Hello list,
I'm wondering if I'm the only one with problems after Tiger upgrade.
After upgrade to Tiger my PowerBook G4 17'' 1.5GHz with 64MB of VRAM
when connected to 20'' Apple Cinema Display the screen flickers at
random intervals (e.g. goes black for 0.5 to 1 second). I noticed
that this happens only when the PowerBook is closed and I use only
the main screen. When I keep the PowerBook open the problem goes away.

Anybody experiences similar issue? Any known solutions to this issue?
To save you some typing here is what I already tried to no avail:
1. PRAM reset (5 times)
2. Upgrade of ATI drivers
3. Re-install of Tiger
4. Create second user
5. Repair permissions on the volume
Thanks for any help.

I believe you can as any another POP / SMTP access mailbox, but you
need to pay for POP access before you can set it up. E.g. Yahoo
charges additional fee for POP/SMTP access. It used to be 19.99 per

Maybe a stupid idea that may help - I remember from one old program
on Windows that it was reading the titles of the windows to determine
if the app was running. I had Text Editor with file of the same name

you have browser or some other window open that has iLife or any of

Get AirPort or Airport Extreme card and have breakfast in Panera stores. All
their stores have free WiFi and they are in all major cities. Alternatively
you could sign-up for T-Mobile WiFi for 30 USD/month for unlimited access in
all Borders Bookstores, Starbucks Coffee shops and few other places. Check
their site (http://www.t-mobile.com/hotspot/), you can cancel after you

Re: Only 256 Meg of 512 Meg RAM is recognized

2005-03-14 Thread Jan Musil
I have purchased 512 MB chip for 1GHz PowerBook 12'' on the web. The chip
that arrived in 2 days was bad so I sent it back and it took abour 10 days
to get a replacement that works fine. It is not the highest speed, but
reasonable enough to get what you want for reasonable money.

The handlig by the zipzoomfly.com was very good. No hold-ups on their side -
it took them 24 hours to respond to the RMA and then it was only a matter of
shipping the chip back to them and waiting for the new one to arrive.

You may try CompUSA if there is one close by or MicroCenter - they also have
Macs on display and could advise you which memory works best. I myself got
the Kingston Value RAM and I'm happy with it.

Re: Memory for 12" G4 powerbook

Watch out Apple seems to have a typo in their manual for 12'' PowerBooks. I
have 1GHz model and the memory that fits is PC2100 DDR266 200pins. Double
check against Mactracker (freeware). I have been searching for the model
they list in the manual for about 30 minutes before I realized this was a
typo.

Based on what MacTracker lists for your machine you will need the same RAM.
I inserted 512MB chip. The 1GB is still little too pricey for me.

Re: Network Questions

2005-02-23 Thread Jan Musil
The only option for you is to get router that enables you to change MAC
address. Most European operators register one MAC address for a location and
do not allow any other machines to connect/share the connection. If your
friend has Ethernet cable connected to the computer there is some hope.

The way to do change his setup is as follows:

1. When his Mac G3 is up open Terminal and run the ifconfig command. Then
note the MAC address of his connection (it is the long hex number next to
the word 'ether' for his network card - the one that has IP address - e.g.
has IP address next to the word inet).

2. Setup the router / wireless hub - in the setup of the WS hub change the
MAC address for the external interface to the MAC address you recorded in
step 1. Do not plug the network to the hub just yet.

3. Take the network cable from his Mac and plug it into the router, connect
other PCs to the network and everything should go fine.

Not sure if Belkin supports the custom MAC address, but keep in mind that
the crazy Europeans (I'm one of them) have different power source than US
(e.g. 220V/50Hz). Good luck.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-04 Thread Jan Musil
Amber: Maybe you just did not notice how many people on the plane watched
the same movie as you did :-).

Personally I prefer my new 12'' over the 15'' that I had about a year ago.
It is easier to transport and I can use it even when the person in front of
me reclines their seat. Display quality is quite OK and at home I use the
large Apple Cinema Display. My typical use is similar to the one described
by Andrew yesterday. One useful application with this small display is
CodeTek VirtualDesktop Pro that enables you to define virtual desktops and
assign specific applications to them. That enables me to work more
efficiently by grouping applications that are typically used side by side -
iPhoto and Photoshop Elements on one screen, Development Environment and
Terminal on another screen etc.

Just my 2 cents to this discussion.

Before you start Kissmac quit all applications that use connection to Internet then
when you quit Kissmac you will get control of the card back and can continue working.
Works fine on my PowerBook 12'' with Airport Extreme and worked well on my older

This saves you restart :)

Re: wireless LAN questions

2004-08-10 Thread Jan Musil
No problem.
There is no point buying Extreme station unless you:
1. plan to upgrade to 802.11g (extreme) in the future
2. plan to purchase the new Airport Express (I have done that and now
I'm purchasing Extreme base station to integrate the Airport Express to
my network - does not work as well with 802.11b)

I have been using 802.11b for a long time (in a week I'll have an extra
base station and wireless router from Linksys - any takers?) and did
not have any problems or performance issues even while playing games
online, downloading large updates from Apple or doing regular work with
e-mail and web browsing.

Another consideration is that the 802.11b equipment is very cheap now.
So you need to make a choice based on your future needs. Hope this
helps a bit.

Re: wireless LAN questions

2004-08-10 Thread Jan Musil
In short.

Q1: Yes, theoretical speed - depends on the distance from the base station, objects in
the way (walls, etc.), other electronics that can interfere with the signal (home
wireless phones, microwaves, ...). But theoretically yes. You are not going to notice
the difference though.

Q2: No you can not fit Airport Extreme Card to the TiBook 667 only the new books have
slot for this card (Alu books).

Q3: Yes you can use the same non-extreme card in PowerBook and white iBooks

Re: Travelstar drive noises, and FW TDM, HELP

2004-07-27 Thread Jan Musil
I guess this is not true for new drives. Otherwise all my laptops would be
dead by now. Also consider that the same drive is also in iPod - I doubt
that people switch off the iPod before moving it - quite the opposite - many
run with the iPod for several miles. I usually do not switch the machine off
before moving between my cube and meeting room. All laptops survived so far
(Macs, IBMs, Compaqs, HPs) and I'm proud owner of the original 5GB iPod that
survived all the moving a well and it flew over 200 000 miles on various
airlines with me.

I had 40GB Travelstar in my older Powerbook and it made noise when removed
and replaced with 80GB disk. I sold it to a friend and he had no problems
with it at all. Still running. I was also worried about the noise as the
other disk did not make any noises (20GB Hitachi). But both work fine even
now 1 year later.

Hi Mike,

I have done this just about a week ago when I sarted playing around with the
Test drive version of Entourage. Just start the Entourage application and
then select Import from the File menu and follow the prompts. It will offer
you to import mails from Apple Mail to Entourage - works fine. If you need
to move your contacts from Address Book to Entourage you can then select
all contacts in Address Book and drag them to your desktop. Then open
Entourage and paste them to the Address Book in Entourage.

So how are you set up and how do you use it exactly? Do you back up

internal HD?
What is yoru picture?
Question was not directed to me, but maybe this helps you. I'm using
CCC for backup of my PowerBook G4 to external FW 400 HDD. PowerBook has
2 partitions on the internal HDD and I have the same split of the FW
disk. The FW partitions have the same names with BACKUP as a sufix.
Then I copy disk to disk with CCC. And for the boot volume I use the
'Make bootable' option. Otherwise copy of all files over. Once a month
I run it with repair permissions. Happily donated for this great piece
of software.

I don't understand. You mentioned in your previous email that you were

I guess here is the mixup - I use Airport Extreme Card in my machine. I
do not have Airport Extreme base station in my house.

If so, that might be
the difference, as my base station merely acts as a wireless gateway,
it
doesn't distribute IP addresses and it connects to a regular Linksys
cable
modem/dsl router which is connected to the DSL modem...
I see. That is different setup than mine. Sorry for confusion.

Is your AEBS acts as the router or not?
I have cable modem connected to Linksys WS router and a small home

2 rooms away). And my Office X has the latest update patch from MS

How do you get out of terminal when you are done with the command line?

Re: Darwin/Re: Running Yellow Dog Linux on a 400 MHz PowerBook G3 Pismo

2004-03-20 Thread Jan Musil
I'm a newbie to Unix. REAL green. So, I thought it would do me good to
consider running a Unix OS on my spare 600 MHz iMac. I have the
impression that installation of most Unix/Linus OSs is a engrossing
endeavor. But I need to become comfortable editing and moving around
in a Solaris environment.
Well if you already run OS X then you have your UNIX like OS right
under your nose. If you insist on having Linux then you are best off
with the YellowDog Linux distribution. Easy to install, kept reasonably
up to date and very easy to use. I think that OS X is as close to
Solaris as Linux is. There will be differences that you will need to
discover once you are running Solaris.

Is Darwin a possibility? If I were to use command line in terminal,
would I be in an environment comparable to Solaris? For instance,
Darwin doesn't come with vi, does it?
Yes. Start using the terminal and browse around, check the man pages,
... Do some reading on macosxhints.com and other fine sites and you are
going to be ready to work in Solaris. Some differences will be there,
but the basics will be the same. And vi is already on OS X. You may
also install the Apple Development environment and Fink. Then you can
get and compile pretty much any software that you would find on any
other UNIX system. If you do not like text interface of Fink you can
use FinkCommander (OS X native GUI for Fink).

Re: Running Yellow Dog Linux on a 400 MHz PowerBook G3 Pismo

2004-03-20 Thread Jan Musil
One reason I see is that Linux requires much less system resources than
OS X and performs better on some older machines. I use OS X now, but
played around with YDL and it worked faster compared with Jaguar.

Jan

Why would you ever want to install Linux on a Mac when OS X is the
best personal Unix ever?

Try repairing the rights on the boot volume. Looks like your user does
not have proper access rights to his home directory. Open Disk Utility

Journalling file system is default on boot volume in Panther. It is a
filesystem that keeps track of changes on the volume and this way it
recovers quicker from crashes (I did not have any yet so I keep my fingers
crossed).

As for the Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) - this is a free software that you can
use to clone a volume. I do this once every 6 months to keep my data in
optimal shape (I also use it once in a while [2-3 weeks] to copy all volumes
to the external FW drive for backup). I have three volumes on the internal
drive and copy each using CCC over to the FW drive (partitioned to three
volumes that match my partitions on the internal drive). Then I boot from
the FW disk and copy all data volume by volume back to my internal drive.
Then boot from the internal drive and everything is back to normal only data
on the volumes are reorganized. No other software needed. The whole
excersise takes under 3 hours on my half full 80GB internal disk.

You can get the CCC package from versiontracker. If you use it you can
contribute to the author that publishes it as a freeware.

I agree. I had used Norton Utils on Jaguar and it never worked to my

unistalled every single file NU left on my machine.

Now I use journalling and reorganize disks with Carbon Copy Cloner and

Re: DVD region code

2003-12-05 Thread Jan Musil
Hi,

I had done this on two PowerBooks (on with DVD only drive and one with
CD-RW/DVD). Here is how I made it happen.

1. You need computer that boots to OS 9
2. Boot to OS 9
3. Download DVDInfo app and run it to determine what is your DVD make,
model. You can download the DVDInfo from
http://www.macos.utah.edu/Documentation/DVDRegionFree/RegionFree_Utilities.h
tml
4. Go to Firmware page http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php and download patch
for your drive
5. Then follow the instructions that come with the download. There is app
that patches the drive. Make sure that the computer does not run out of
juice during the patching
6. Don't interrupt the patching process and also close all apps before
running the patching
7. Then reboot to OS X and download Region X

Note that OS X will still count the switches, but that is SW based and can
be changed by invoking Region X or rebooting.

Good luck.

Re: Kernel Panic

2003-11-12 Thread Jan Musil

You could boot from CD and run the fsck from the disk utility on all your
disks and then run the fix permissions on your startup disk (never hurts).

If you are in search for good firewall software and need more than the
standard FW settings in MacOS X System Preferences look at BrickHouse. It is
frontend for the ipfw. BrickHouse allows you to define real FW rules for
your machine as oposed to the OS X Preference Panes.

And it is unlikely to crash your machine.

Re: linux on lomabrd

2003-08-17 Thread Jan Musil
Personal note for you who wonder which Linux distribution to use.

When I started playing with Linux on Pbook G4 I tried to install Debian.
Documentation was very scetchy - some web sites describe how they did it,
but I have not found any 'complete' install guide that would help me install
debian with the X-win.

Duringg install I had few minor problems that I could resolve, but all I got
was Debian in text mode (yeah I had 9 consoles, but I wanted also X). As a
matter of fact I never got the X-windows working. I got a far as a gray
screen with login window that did not let me in even as root. Pretty
frustrating experience after being pampered by OS X. Don't even ask me how
much time I spent trying to make it work (well it was over 2 nights).

After that I ordered YDL 3.0 Geek Edition CDs (yeah there is 30USD price tag
on them, but well I can skip 10 lattes in Starbucks). I had totally
different experience with this distribution. The installation was a breeze
and KDE worked immediatelly after install. This distribution is very very
well put together. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try Linux on
their machine and has no or like me outdated (over 6 years) experience with
Linux.

Not really. The YDL release cycle not as frequent - at least the major
releases. You can get updated versions of the packages when they become
available using yum that loads them from the network and installs them. I
ran yum right after install from the original CDs and it took severa minutes
to load and update the system (I do not know how long because I went to
bed).

I doubt that Apple would do this in next few years as Hamlin outlined in his
response.

Well I guess that is what Apple wants everyone to belive. As much as I like
OS X it does not offer the same performance as YDL on the same machine
although I use it as my primary system due to few applications I need there.

Can't really compare. Last time I ran Linux on Wintel was over 7 years
ago and I used text mode only at that time. As for the YDL it is based
on Red Hat and you can decide to use either GNOME or KDE. I just
switched back to KDE. For some reason I like it more.
The GUI is highly customizable and the system is more responsive that
when I run OS X. My machine is G4/667 system with 1GB memory and 80GB

Use HEX key if you have third party WS access point, that was the only way I
can make my PC, two Macs work with the Linksys WS point. You can generate
HEX key easily with WEP Key Maker then use it with all your WS devices. Find
it on versiontracker.com

If you expect to protect your network against attack or intrusion from
outside and have some sensitive data on the network I suggest to use
additional mechanism to protect individual machines as it is fairly easy to
crack the WEP keys. If you want to try it use KisMAC sniffer. Similar
programs exist for other platforms. If you have Macs on the network switch
on the internal firewall service that should help a bit. If you have PCs you
will need third party software to protect your PC (BlackIce, Norton Firewall
and other are available at reasonable prices).

Open System Preferences -> Network. Make sure the Airport is available for
selected profile and then open the Airport section select Airport tab and
select your network. You will get prompted for password, then enter the HEX
number you received on the router and everything should work. That's what I
did on mine. You may also select to remember the password for next time.

It depends. If you want to make it little more complicated to break in then
use WEP - it is easy to configure and does not cause any problems. If you
want to keep your network open just leave it as it is. I protect mine, but
know that it is just to discourage regular users. Determined hacker could
break in, but why would they break into mine when there are other 4 networks
in my building that are not protected...

Personally I recommend to setup WEP if you have anything on your computer
that could compromise you - account numbers, credit card numbers, PINs,
financial statements. On top of WEP I have each machine on my network setup
with additional level of security - enabled firewall on both windows and mac
machines... Call me paranoid.
