Matt and Sue Halter said: My wallstreet w/bluechip 466 G3 will run many programs faster under OSX than my 800 G4 iBook, even though I have 640 mb ram in the iBook and only 256 in the WS. I think it has to do with the difference in L2 cache size as much as anything. Just speculation though. I agree this is the reason as the g4 bluechips aren't faster than the 500Mhz+ PB G4s in tests I've seen. iBooks, except maybe for the latest, seem crippled. I actually thought that the then 2003-04 crop of iBook G4s, maybe they had 256MB, looked bad GUI-wise compared to my WS II 266 with 384 MB and 10.3. thermal transfer material in the Powerbook G4s
550 Gigabit Ethernet Powerbook G4 and a 400 Mercury: I need advice on the best way to reapply thermal transfer material between the CPU and the heat exchanger. I only have this sticky white noname stuff called cooling paste. I have yet to find a source for the green material Apple uses. The local Apple repair centre says this is what they use. What I find hard is how to find the correct amount of cooling paste to put there. I used a small amount that I thought would be enough to cover the plate on top of the CPU. How do I verify I have enough heat dissipation? These models don't have built in temperature monitor. Re: Limewire (OT)
Tim Collier said: Interesting answer. I was thinking as I read it.hmmm, no music industry, then nobody to pay artists, no artists being paid, no music! What a sad, sad world that would be. So you have a hard time getting it or what? My point was that the record companies of *now*, ie as they are structured now, will wither, because there will be new alternatives for distributing online, that will in many cases give an opportunity for new types of business models, that to a large extent will prevent the big 6 or whatever corporations that own all the other record companies in the world (!) from controlling the action. This is good. The big evil mogule record company of the 20th Century is a dodo. Good riddance when they are replaced (which will be a long process of course). The main reason music industry is doing so bad is inflated record prices, that they haven't been following with their times. I'm quite sure what people want to pay for is artists not record companies as they are now. It's very possible to create new business models online. It's actually hard work getting music for free (as if time was free) on the sharing networks and in many cases well worth to spend about $1 or so per track. Which is why there is a big incentive to actually purchase music. But it has to be done right. So far the only well done alternatives I know of is iTunes Music Store and Beatport http://www.beatport.com and swedish Dotshop http://www.dotshop.se, though the latter doesn't sell downloadable tracks yet I think, but they will and they do sell CDs for $14.50 incl. local shipping (normal prices like $20 or more here (with shipping or in the shops )). If you as many record companies think it's possible to turn back now, I think you're very mistaken. If online sharing is prevented, I think a majority not buying CDs will continue to not buy these. Online services will grow if and only if they have good services, treat the customers right and have a fair price, possibly varying with demand. The only way to meet this situation is head on and not by bullying people to buy music. Because that doesn't work. The situation now is similar to the situation when the punk music had pawed the way for independent record companies in the early eighties. It took the major labels well over a decade to get control of the situation again and independent labels have continued to play a significant part in the evolution of music, again also in the late eighties/early nighties, when the dance music revolution changed the musical landscape worldwide (except for many years in the US). It's still a delight to think of the fact that some tracks for a period of time in the made it to number one in the UK without major channel airplay and without massive store presence, solely by being sold off trucks and markets, often with any label at all (which also happened for a brief period during the early punk era). The reason they could do that was because DJs played tracks in big outdoor parties and on (non profit) pirate radio. The majors, the radio stations and the record companies, initially didn't get it as many times before, that the market for music was changing very very fast. They were actually bypassed to a large extent. Of course, they got hold of the situation again, but things was changed for the better a while at least. Ok, I'm sorry for the length and prolonging this offtopic subject, but I feel strongly about this issue. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Seth Austen said: Although 24/96 is available, many pro engineers are still recording projects at 44.1 or 48. You can really mess up the sonic qualities of the audio from poorly done conversions from 96 to 44.1 rendering it worse than just recording at a lower level to begin with. Good point. But I don't do those poor conversions myself. Many 24 / 96 cards also allow for lesser quality recordings, like 16 bits / 44.1 Khz (The CD standard) or the recording software do a good job at input. Also when comparing 16 bits, an iMic won't cut it. It's about quality and what equipment is meant to be. An iMic shouldn't be regarded as something for recording vinyl, if you want to preserve the soul of the music. I would never digitize vinyl with an iMic! It's inferior sound quality. Do you guy hate music or what? Cheeezh! 24 bit / 96Khz is minimum standards these days for recording and is only a few hundred dollars, less second hand. There are alternatives for PCMCIA, USB as well FireWire. Why would anyone hate music so much to settle for something else is beyond me. Even if the end result is Mp3, the result *will* be better with a high quality recording to start with. Also, I'd recommend to use a quality vinyl player. I use a Technics 1200 deck , as I mainly record dance music, mixed for that deck. But for other music I'd use Linn or similar. Remember quality cabling! As for software, I'd use Peak for the demo period for a short project or get SoundStudio. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Actually, if the license for the DVD is yours I think it's legal to obtain CD copies from elsewhere, though this may be different where you live. Can I copy the data portion of the 10.3 DVD to my Wallstreet's HD and install from there using XPostFacto? Has anyone here tried that? If you make 2 partitions, that may work, but you probably have to live with those 2 partitions after installation. Personally, I prefer to keep my User folder on the second partition as reformatting and complete reinstallations, backups are so much easier to do. I won't run the network without WEP, so turning off encryption is a non-starter. Has anyone gotten this combination to work? I'm pretty sure you'll have to choose adapted installation and point out the driver OR open the package with Pacifist and install it by hand. iPod Mini sync to non USB-2 machine
My ex-GF bought an iPod Mini and have great problems syncing it to anything as she have only USB-1 connectors on the PC and iBook 366 that she uses. She also don't have a firewire cable as these babies come with USB-2 cables only. I thought they'd be backwards compatible and only being slower, but no. She was able to use it on the PC, but there are no playlists transfers. On a 2nd iBook 366 with OS 9, the iPod doesn't even mount as a HD for temp storage. What are the best suggestions in this situation? Any ideas? So far, the whole experience seem very unmaclike. So now the Mac users have to pay for that Apple was so slow getting USB-2 and because they decided to standardize on that with these iPods (but not on the earlier Mac models), barring very suitable machines otherwise, unless you get a FW cable. All other connection attempts, except those that have specific rules in my Little Snitch setting, should render a Little Snitch dialog. This doesn't happen. Wouldn't calls for the net get logged somewhere? I'm not sure where actually. They must succed when I'm on steady connection, as there is no LS dialogs so I think whatever calls there are (if that is the reason), they must be within the Little Snitch Rules I have. There is also the possibility that there is no call, but a setting that keep telling my machine to use the modem. The silence online is an indication of that there are calls, but when I'm online I keep the modem turned off in Network, because Safari and other apps for some reason goes there instead of going to the only live connection, so it's possible whatever is calling only wants to use the modem. I'm not sure if this network problem is related though. Iäd liek to solve that one after this modem calling problem though. thermal transfer material in PBG4 ?
Anyone have suggestions what the thermal transfer material (1) used on the CPU on Powerbook G4 logic board is? I have used cooling paste before on the Powerbook G3s, but I suspect this is something else? The repair manual indicates I should use new materials, so implicitly it's bad idea to reuse the old material, if at all possible. Any ideas for obtaining such materials except from Apple? Also, other sources doesn't equal ALL other sources, so your not good experiences can only serve as an experience for the vendors you have used, none other. If there's a faint picture when you point a light source to the display, it could be the invertor cable or the invertor card. Are you positive the cables work? What have the seller said about the known quality? You could also look into the connector with a magnifying glass to see if dirt or misaligned pins cause the contact to break. Older G4 Not booting in OS 9
Any ideas for why an older G4, like a 400 or 500 wouldn't boot into OS 9? OS X (10.3.7) works both from several discs and several CDs. But no known Bootable OS 9 CDs, like repair CDs or OS 9 installation CDs work. Same discs boot other similar machines. All I get is the dreadful grey screen. I have tried to: Zap PRAM, Reset NVRAM, changed startup disc, the c key, Cmd-Alt-Shift- Backspace. It works as long there's an OS X System, but not with OS 9. A friend suggested that a reinstallation of OS X could solve things, but why would the HD affect the CD boot process? I kinda forgot how to diagnose the OS 9 boot process. Re: Older G4 Not booting in OS 9
Laurent Daudelin said: I would risk to say that you probably haven't the right version of OS 9 to boot from on this machine. There has been quite a few different versions of the installation CDs for OS 9 along with a few updates. What you need to make sure you have is the full install retail CD, not one borrowed from another Mac as it might be tailored for that Mac and not for your older PowerBook G4... This is unlikely, but thanks for the suggestion. All the discs I tried boots up other machines of the very same model. I don't think I would get the grey screen if it had been the wrong disc. It would say the disc won't work with this machine. At least that have been the case before. Also, why would an original retail OS 9.2.x or 9.1 disc supposed to install on everything from that time period not work? In the past this have always worked. The other discs: Techtool, Disc Warrior, Norton, all originals, suitable for the early G4 as well as later doesn't work with the G4 at hand. They have booted about everything I tried them with since. So I'm pretty sure the reason lies elsewhere. I think I may have some kind of hardware problem, so I'm looking into that. When the computer is on the indicator says that the battery is fully charged. I have started the computer with the battery only before. The PMU has been replaced; I know it works cause before I replaced it this battery that I have was discharged. The charging unit (or whatever it's called) is also new to the computer. Suggestions please? Unfortunately I have none, but I can share identical experiences with a WS II/PDQ that I used to own. It wouldn't startup unless it had the powercord plugged into the wall. Then it could stay up for 2 and half hours or so. On the other hand it could be moved with no or empty battery in to another outlet or let me change to a fresh battery, even in the same bay, while in sleep. I suppose something in the battery charge is too little to be able to handle an increased request of power during the startup or there could be a hardware setting somewhere that prevents startup without a powercord plugged in. But I wouldn't count on that. Maybe others have better suggestions. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... So following the setup manual I'm stuck, because it seems to assume the card being there should be indicated by the panel and then also the network panel (discovery of network interface). I have no existing Airport card in the machine. Well, it turned out the PCMCIA card had been disconnected from the motherboard when the machine fell off a chair months before this. Re: backlighting turned off suddenly in PB G4 / 550
Update: It now seems clear this is a hardware problem as I only need to reposition the display, type on the keyboard or insert a CD for the backlight to go ff. I guess it's likely to be a cable problem of some sort, but it doesn't seem to be a normal loose cable problem as setting the machine to sleep and reawake it works every time. Also there's no flickering of any kind. It just goes off. This makes it more likely in my mind for the problem to be the invertor board or in the worst case the light bulbs in the display. As I do have the 400 also, I wonder if I can try and replace the invertor board and display from it just to see if any of those parts is the problem. Then buy this part 2nd hand and replace it for good. Are these particular parts from the 400 and 550 compatible to your knowledge? Mikael Byström said: I have a Powerbook G4 / 550 here that ocassionally suddenly turns off the backlight after just a short time of use. Setting the machine to sleep do help, but it's very irritating to have to set the machine to sleep all the time while working. Last time this problem occured a Open Firmware reset-all seemed to fix it for a while at least. But I need to know what brings forward this problem in this model as I'm not the only one using it. Powerbook G4 400 faster than 550?
I thought the 16 MB VRAM in the ATY,RageM6 would offset the smaller amount of L2 cache and inferior CPU architecture in the other generation of the G4 processor that the 550 and onwards have. But the PB 550 feels noticably slower. So, is the next logical change a 867 or faster? I do have an addional 256MB in the 400, but I have more than a hundred MB free so it doesn't seem related. Re: PB G4/400 freezes suddenly. Heat? - Update (not heat or fan)
Here's an update: We temperature measured my freezing PB G4 / 400 running with an alternative HD. We used an external multimeasurement device with a cable attached to the heatdissipator. The temp reached 66°C before the fan went on ( I had to use 2 movies running in VLC and QT player as well as coding a 20minute piece to AAC in iTunes keep the temp rising for about 90 minutes). The temp dropped to 52°C and the fan stopped. So there went my fan-not-running-mustbe-heatproblem theory. OK. So I took my old HD, that have been working error free in a PB G4 550 for the last week, and put it in my -book and booted. The move took about 15 minutes and the machine naturally cooled off. It frooze at the login screen! Further proof that this freeze problem is unrelated to heat, right? I did a hard restart and could login and 5 minutes later it frooze again. At this point I decided I could deduce that excessive heat wasn't casuing the problem and further the fan is actually working. I then put my HD over in the 550 again and here it works without freezing. Again. So I'm going to run my machine with the other HD and if the freezing stops, then there must be something fishy about my drive (30 GB IBM Travelstar). But if so, why does it work in the 550? I'm using my HD in that machine now. Something to do with differences of internal power tolerances? I'm not sure at all, but all of the above is repeatable. There are no logical errors on the disc that I can detect with software, and it seems unlogical that logical errors on the disc would cause problems on one machine and not on another? Or am I wrong? Any further suggestions and even wild speculation are more than welcome at this point. What data can I measure with my disc? It has SMART. Can that help me? Mikael Byström said: Noone have any insights on this type of problem with a Powerbook G4 suddenly start to freeze after using a firewire disc? It's a rootless system and root is not activated from the start. In reality though, some problems can only be solved by using apps running as root. But the best way then is usually using Pseudo or a similar app to grant specific apps root access, preferrably then the GUI tools needed for the job at hand. It's of course a good idea to know what one are doing with them and one shouldn't run apps as root unless this is really needed. I make it a point to not install OS 9 drivers. The few apps I use are the 4D 6.8 compiler and Loop app Infinity, which can run under Classic. Besides those there is nothing I need in OS 9 and I don't want to waste my time there. I even turn down support for OS 9 problems as I can't be bothered and OS X put new demands all the time upon me. But I kinda regret it because the errors was typically both more common and easier to fix than OS X problems. For some reason more people were prepared to pay for fixing them as well. I don't know what you'll pay for this machine, but I'd be wary of iBooks from this era and onwards, that are sold without Applecare left, unless you like tinkering with the hardware, looking for second hand spare parts or am prepared to pay a premium for later repairs and replacements. If the price is low enough, this may not matter of course. I think the 1Ghz iBooks are quite nice machines otherwise and they probably fit your usage profile if you can live with the smallish screen. It appears that these machines support a chip density of 8M with a width of 32 bits. Even though that configuration isn't listed, it could be the next logical step. The pdf also states that the machine is to use SDRAM memory with a rating of 100MHz or greater. This would make sense as a recommendation because the 250 and 292MHz systems run on a 83MHz system bus. Where as the 233, 266 and 300MHz systems run on a 66MHz system bus. If there are any substantiated verifiable facts that they do share code, put then on the tabel please. These apps should be treated as separate entities with their separate set of problems. I kinda like Entourage, but it's a bit slow unless you have stellar new hardware. I really think PowerMail http://www.ctmdev.com beats them all. There are lots of info that you may need, like login and passwords. Make a list of what you can think of, with details of your terms for it, in what app you use the data. I think you should *backup* all the data and keep the old machine intact for a while in case you forget something, but don't worry about where it is for now. Re: Wallstreet
Ben Dyer said: This is a known issue with the Wallstreet under Jaguar. To fix this problem: * Restart into MacOS 9 * Put the Wallstreet to sleep * Wake it up again * Restart into Jaguar As I have stated earlier on-list, I have a differing experience in that step 2 and 3 above was unnecessary. However, to be able to boot into OS X, when in OS 9, you have to choose OS X as the startup disk with the associated control panel. During the first boot, when you do this, the machine may (or may not) freeze. On the second boot, this will not happen. Something to do with garbled NVRAM or PRAM Settings I have speculated. I never investigated, but if anyone want to check this, they could run the command: sudo nvram -p password in the terminal and compare the individual settings when the machine doesn't have this display problem, with when the machine do have the problem. In order to do the latter one could direct a strong light source to the display in order to see. This worked for me., for doing restarts into OS 9. I do think if possible it's ok to press the backlight buttons a few times to kick in the backlights if this is possible, as, for me at least, the problem came back at next restart, indicating the settings were the same even if you pressed those buttons. Most often for me, I couldn't get back the backlight, if I didn't press those buttons somewhere around midway thru the boot process, before Aqua. After that did not work. There may be other variations of course. Every time the power is interrupted (i.e. you take the power cord out, while no working battery is present), you will have to repeat the procedure--even if the Wallstreet was turned off at the time you removed the power cord. For me this problem *only* appeared if the wallstreet was in sleep or running when the power was cutoff. It's possible the difference is because my backup battery had a small load and yours didn't have one at all, but I'm not sure. My experience is somewhat different, however, and I thought it worth mentioning. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
