Re: TiBook power adapter problem (update)
I only seem to be getting replies relating to the hardware, specifically crappy cables, but that does not explain why it only stops charging when the PowerBook is asleep. When it's running or off, it charges quite happily. I have read on the net about this only being an OS X issue and not OS 9, though this PowerBook doesn't have OS 9 installed (might do it just to see though). TiBook power adapter problem ???
Yes, my questions keep coming... My wife's TiBook 400MHz has now developed a strange problem where all of a sudden the charger stops charging, the LED switches off and the PowerBook runs off the battery until it goes to sleep due to lack of battery power. When one unplugs and plugs the charger back in again, it starts to charge. Re: ADSL - 255.255.0.0 - going crazy
From: Laurent Daudelin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cor, a super quick answer, thanks! Do you have a router connected to your ADSL modem? If not, then it probably explains why. Somehow, your provided has registered the MAC address of your QuickSilver and will hand out an IP address only to that machine. You're spot on, direct to ADSL modem. Is there a solution ? --- If you do have a router, then it is probably misconfigured. The reason why I haven't been using my D-Link DI-604 Router is because I have serious problems keeping it open. ADSL - 255.255.0.0 - going crazy
I have a problem with my wife's "new" TiBook 400MHz and I'm going crazy... We have ADSL and everything works fine with my G4 QuickSilver, but her TiBook (X.3.9) will not receive a valid IP address, 169.smoething... I have run permissions repair and all, no difference. The subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 which is something I recognise from previous instances with this problems with other Macs. I literally take the Ethernet cable from the QuickSilver, plug it in the back of the TiBook, nothing, and then putting it back into the QS, everything works straight away. I have restarted, fiddled, restarted, switched off the IPv6 which I read somewhere could help, but nothing works. Any ideas ??? Also, why can one not set the subnet mask manually while keeping DHCP with automatic IP address assignment ??? Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Stalling ADSL connection, router ?!?
I have just connected a straight forward D-link ADSL router and now the Internet connection stalls on and off, or at least I think it's the router... I recently bought a cheap (dropped and dented) PB G4 TiBook with a non-working DVD drive, but it ran fine with OS X installed. I then installed OS 9 onto it through FW disk mode and now it's all gone a bit wrong. It won't regognize any System folder on the harddisk, not even the previously working OS X folder, and when starting up from a FW CD it won't see the harddisk anymore. Holding down Option on bootup shows the harddisk with an OS 9 icon (no OS X), flashes the first disk-? for a few seconds, goes over to OS 9 grey startup screen then shows the OS 9 disk-? and stays there. 1. How can I get it to start up from the OS X folder, or rather switch it to see that folder first. Remember the internal optical doesn't work and starting up from an external CD doesn't show the harddrive... :o( Larry _ Don't just search. Find. Re: Won't boot from DVD
Yes I have tried through Prefernces, Startup Disk. Allows me to select the DVD, I hit reboot, Mac then reboots. After reboot displays the folder with a question mark for a second or two then continues booting off my hard drive. No I have tried several different DVDs (10.3 Upgrade, 10.3 Retail my friend bought, I even tried copying my 10.2 CD to a DVD). Bottom line seems to be CD boots fine but DVD will not read for startup. Won't boot from DVD
I am having a problem booting from my DVD ROM drive. I am trying to just wipe my machine and do a clean install from 10.3 DVD. The disk reads fine in finder, but no matter what method I try (restart and boot from, hold down c, or hold down alt) the DVD will not boot. 1. I know it is not the DVD, tried it in my friend's G5, worked fine. 2. I know my drive will boot from CD, my 10.2 CD's work fine. 3. Have tried more then one DVD to boot and all fail. Thoughts on a trade
First off I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to asnwer, just a few additional points of discussion. 1. Portability - While I appreciate everyone saying I should stick with my Ti Powerbook, my mind is already make up to move to desktop. I have a computer at work already and that is pretty much the only other place I use my laptop. For portability I would have to say what I have sucks. I have broken hinges which means I always need to be up against the wall. Also have a battery which only gives me about 30 minutes of use and a lot less if doing anything CPU heavy. One of the main reasons I want to get a desktop is to leave it at home where I can have an FTP server setup and also want to use it as a Tivo type DVR. Another problem as I see it with the Powerbook is a complete lack of upgradability. I can't put in a better video card, can't put in a new CPU. Already maxed out my ram. I am definitly a tinkerer as far as my hardware goes. I enjoy the flexibility that a tower would give me as far as upgradaibility (if that is even a word). 2. My main question - Still have not gotten an answer as far as the performace difference between a dual G4/450 and a single G4/733. The machine will be used mainly for web surfing, e-mail, watching movies, and also host a VERY low usage FTP server. Does anyone have any thoughts which would be better? If I had an extra $500 I WOULD pick up a mini. Unfortunately we are not all so financially blessed and I need a machine to sit at home to do more server/dvr work. Firewire not working
I have a Titanium Powerbook 667. Never really had an opportunity to use the firewire port on it until now. Just got myself a 15Gb iPod and it is having a very weird issue. If I plug the iPod into my Firewire port it will only charge, it will not sync. I have to plug the iPod into my USB2 card in order to sync. Let me answer this right off the bat...YES, I am using the proper cable. The iPod came with a firewire cable which I use and get the result above. I went out and bought one of those USB2/Firewire combo cable, plugged in just the USB2 cable and boom it syncs. Tried just the firewire part of the new cable and same thing, it will charge but not sync. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Orlando Mac Geek -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Lone Mac in a Windoze world...
I'm the only one with a Mac here at work, and while I have no problems accessing stuff, printing and so forth, I have a couple of concerns that someone may have suggestions of how to solve... When I access the server I spray .DS Store files all over the place, and while most PC users have "Don't show invisibles, these guys do as we're all technical and not office bods. 1. Is there any way of navigating/accessing a PC without spraying .DS Store files in every folder one accesses ??? One solution would be to run Virtual PC and access the server through Windoze as that presumably doesn't do this. 2. Forget features, which version of Virtual PC is the fastest on a PowerBook G4 1GHz and OS X.3 ? I would probably run Win 2000. Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Firewire connections with multiple drives ???
I have several external Firewire drive that I want to connect to my server (G4 @ 733MHz) and I wonder if there is any difference in the performance in how they are connected. I have: - LaCie DVD±RW dual layer - LaCie 250GB d2 Extreme - Maxtor OneTouch 200GB - FW case with various 20-30GB disks Does it matter which drive is connected directly to the Mac ? and which drive is connected through the first as the all drives cannot be connected directly to the Mac? Is a Firewire hub faster/slower/same as connecting the drives in series (piggy-backing) ? I hope my question is clear enough, but will obviously further explain if necessary. Re: OS X desktop icon bug, I cannot believe...
From: Claire Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I'll tell you what came to mind when I read your post. (1) If your preferences are NOT set to snap-to-grid, and (2) you've been gathering a collection of icons all over your desktop, and then (3) you decide to switch your preferences TO snap-to-grid, and then (4) you select SOME or ALL of your desktop items and drag them just a little bit, then: The result is that each icon snaps to the closest "point" on the grid. Some go up a little, some go down a little, some go left a little,etc... They all do appear to "fly" a little, and they all end up in "the grid" rather than random. Could that be what you are describing? No, much simpler. I have the setting to NOT snap to grid, i.e. default. 5-10 icons on the desktop, some on the right some on the left I place them roughly where I want them Select clean up or whatever (I use a Swedish system) Some icons jump to a different place and some icons are seemingly placed on top of another and so on, completely illogical. Oh, BTW I am completely aware of the grid system, on a Windoze pc you can adjust the grid distance by pixels. Then when I go to click on an icon it's not actually there even though it looks as if it is, and selecting them all shows their actual position which may be somewhere completely different. The HD icon doesn't tend to move though... Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Bridging between airport and ethernet
I do not know if it is possible to do this, so thought I would throw it out there and see what kind of response I get. My apartment complex gives us free WiFi which I happily use and connect witrh my Powerbook's AirPort card. What I would like to do is to bridge this connection using the built in ethernet port. Basically what I am trying to do is hook up my Vonage terminal adapter to my Powerbook. The problem is if I setup some form of internet connection sharing, that basically puts a double NAT on the signal and Vonage will not work. Is there a way to allow my mac to simply work as a hub. Re: USB Hub killed two Macs... ???
To the best of my knowledge (and I have studied electronics at Uni for 4 years) a powered hub simply boosts the signal out to the connected devices, and can be used as an unpowered hub with the PSU unplugged. It should not affect the computer end of the hub. Obviously there might be something wrong with the hub, but still odd IMO. I had a small brainwave and I'm going to try pressing the reset button and see if this helps revive the iMacs. Question (I know this is not the iMac list) is the external reset switch (tiny resessed thing by the USB port) the same as the Cuda switch ??? USB Hub killed two Macs... ???
I am sending this question here, even though it relates to a couple of iMacs, as in reality it's USB which is the subject and not iMac. I have just seemingly killed (?) two Bondi iMacs by plugging a powered USB hub in. Prior to using the hub, they both worked fine, now they won't start up at all. I can hear the click of the PSU when I plug in the power cable, but even pressing the button on the front with nothing else plugged in, nothing happens. It's a TopCom USB 2.0 (1.1 compatible) powered hub with 4 ports, so nothing out of the ordinary but I am 100% sure that it was the hub that caused the fault(s). 1. What could have happened to the iMacs ? Can they be fixed ? Any checks to be made ? 2. Is it likely to be a faulty hub, or is there some incompatibility (though there shouldn't be) ? Re: Not a PowerBook after all...?
From: Marcin Wichary <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> People buy Macs for a single reason - it is the tool that works for them. And you know that because you asked every one of them? Personally, there were many reasons why I bought my first Mac, and the one you mentioned wasn't among them. I am one of the unfortunate people than cannot buy a computer, settle with that and use it for say three years, I am plaigued with a need to buy something else, at least once a month, and I regularly look at buying a PC for various reasons; games, my wifes studies etc. but I always come back to a Mac, because: 1. They always work better, smoother, MUCH less admin 2. Pride! Pride to be differemt, pride to have something that looks better, pride to have something that works better. When I moved back to Sweden from England five years ago and took the job to establish a documentation role in a machine tool manufacturer I was faced with the decision whether to go with the PC they provided me with (which I hated) or to go it alone and get a Mac (IT support knew nothing about Mac). I spoke to Steve Wozniak and we discussed the issue. He came with an answer, not THE answer but enough for me tyo make my mind up and something which will stay with me for as long as Apple's products provide a viable solution; "It's a bit like religion, if you believe in something you sometimes have to sacrifice things to go with what you believe in" and for me, first and foremost I use a Mac because I WANT TO. Okidata Okipage 8z OSX driver
Has anyone out there been able to find an OS X driver for the Okidata Okipage 8Z laser printer? I loved this little unit but all I can find are Windows drivers. Okidata was zero help, they said since the printer was discontinued before OS X 10.2 really became popular so they never made a driver and are not planning to. On that note just one point. Does everyone agree that if a company sells a printer that claims to work on both Mac and PC that they should be olbligated to continue develolpment of the driver on both platforms. I was disgusted by Okidata's absolute lack of concern for their customers. I suppose if they had stopped development of the Windows drivers then I would not have much to complain about, but they have nice fresh XP drivers only a few months old. Not a PowerBook after all...?
Hi! I have been doing some serious thinking and have realised that maybe a PowerBook isn't what I really need, but a slightly more powerfull, but semi-moveable computer, and when I read on Apple's site that the iMac G5 is even sold as a moveable machine, I figured that maybe I should consider this instead. Well, I am pretty much decided, half the price, G5 instead of G4, 1440 over 1280 is enough to sell it to me. However, the PowerBook range was recently updated with speeds and specs going up, and prices going down, but as I haven't taken much notice of the iMac, I presume we're still buying rev.1 machines... Any rumours, or typical timing of an update ? Laurence _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! From: Timothy Luoma <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Then again, I wouldn't recommend getting any .0 release of either hardware (i.e. the first batch of G5 Powerbooks) or software (Tiger version 0) unless you are comfortable sitting on the cutting edge. I am inclined to agreen as the current lineup have been seriously upgraded and have some really nice features that were pay-extra before. Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Re: New PowerBooks
From: Laurent Daudelin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> There is no saying as to when Tiger will be released. But, if you're not in a hurry and can wait until the beginning of July, then why not waiting? But then, at that time, rumors of a G5 PowerBook might be more persistent, so maybe you will want to wait in September to see if they are finally released. You see, you can always have a good reason to wait... Yes, been there done that. Bought my TiBook 550 three weeks before they fitted it with Combo and bought my 15" AlBook a couple of weeks before they fitted it with SuperDrive (I thin it was, or was there some other upgrade on the standard machine ?) In any case, the cash burning a hole in my pocket and my wife's student discount does point towards an imminent purchase as soon as I'm allowed out of the house. I am currently housebound due to a 4" nail in my shoulder (intentially fitted to reconnect my shoulder after a motorbike accident...)... Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! From: "Andrew F." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For me it was very difficult choosing between the 12" (superdrive) and 15" (combodrive) this time around. My decision is combo either way as I want an external FW/USB2 dual layer +/- drive which I can use on any of the Macs in the house. --- The lighted keyboard would be nice More than nice for me, very practical. Re: New PowerBooks
From: Laurent Daudelin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Also think carefully about the screen. The usual motto is the more the better. Of course, for a laptop, that has to be compounded with the transportability factor. I have a 17" and has no problem carrying to the office and back home every single day... This is one of the main issues, yes! I have now had a 12" and use a 15" 1GHz AlBook at work and the desktop realestate is quite different. The initial thought was a 12" for everywhere; sofa, outside on the patio and then hook it up to a 17" TFT in my study, but if I went for the 15" I wouldn't have to switch between 1024 and 1280, sods law is that I'd like to do something that required 1280 while not being in the study... Like I said, the illuminated keyboard is a big one for me. Gigabit Ethernet another, as FW800 and S-video out. And I've just realised one of the real killers in the decision, the RAM!! The 12" has 2x256 while the 15" has 1x512, making it much cheaper to add more memory!!! I just have one question regarding the timing of the purchase; As the G5 is some way off, the 1.5GHz is plenty good for me, but what about Tiger, would it not be better buying the AlBook with Tiger installed ?!? I will always have access to Tiger later (no need to harp on about software licensing, we all have different levels of conciense...) ;o) but maybe it'd be better to wait ?!... Re: New PowerBooks
From: "Andrew" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Well, I've had the new 1.5GHz 12" for a week now, and must say that the upgrade was really worthwhile. Excellent news!! Partly for you, obviusly, but also for me as I have just sold my 12" AlBook, yes the one which I debated over for a week, the one with a dent in the corner and twisted frame. I also sold my iMac G4 FP and an interim PB G4 667DVI, so now I'm gonna go out and buy myself a brand new AlBook, just undecided about the size... 12" or 15" The illuminated keyboard has certain practical advantages... Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
Re. BTO Compare a PowerBook to a Dell Laptop!! At Dell you can configure your laptop just about any way you want and it is designed around this concept, while the PowerBook is designed the way all good Macs have always been designed, to be the way the design guys thought best, and so far it's obvious Apple has done the right thing. Look at a Dell and see what the BTO concept has done for their range of laptops, they're shit!! Larry _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
