Re: [Audyssey] new game
Ah, a tmnt game would rock! I'd love to see an audio version of the original Tmnt arcade beat em up game, I spent quite considderable amounts of cash on that one back in the day, - and even used to be able to do in Beabop at the end of stage 2. Now of course, i have it on Mame but an audio version would rock! In fact, I think that walk along beat em ups would be a good genre to have in audio, games like Final fight, Streets of rage, double dragon etc, - yes I know there was Danger city, but I'd love to see something more done in this respect. By the same tocan, there are lots of other genres that could probably do with representing in audio, - and even given the games we have, more are always welcome if they can do something different or expand the scope of audio gaming. I agree. Hi all, I know this has been a topic of interest of late so I thought I would put this out here under it's own topic in the hopes of generating an informative discussion that will aid in making Monty a better game for all. From what I have read here allot of folks are interested in some randomisation in the game. As I have pointed out the original game had no randomisation, but that doesn't mean though that some randomisation can't be added. For example, allot of gamers are interested in randomising where the monsters and treasures are. For technical reasons I am not prepared at this point to rewrite a large part of the 1.0 engine to add this kind of randomisation. However, I do have an alternative that perhaps some of you might be satisfied with. There are allot of treasures, weapons, etc laying around the temples. One way of randomising the game is simply by randomising how many gems, gold coins, and swords are on that particular level. You might play one game and only find two swords on level 1, and in the next find 4 or 5 swords. That would drastically change your score as well as how many weapons you have to use against your enemies. I've also looked at when placing a monster in a room rather than statically plae it's starting location randomly placing it in the room so that where it starts is different, and sometimes monsters will be closer together in one game, but fara apart in the next. While at the same time keeping the originalaty of the game, by still having the monsters in the rooms they are suppose to be in. What do you all think? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Contra and Gradius
Nope. Those were crazy hard games for classics. They were side-scrolling shoot 'em ups. Even my brother, who's fully sighted, had a lot of trouble with contra. Unlike modernized games, where you can duck and cover and shoot from behind things and such, Contra just sent wave after wave of enemies after you, and you basically had to be faster than them. As for Gradius, I've heard of it, and probably have the NSF soundtrack file lying around somewhere for it, but I never got a chance to playit. - Original Message - From: Kelly Sapergia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2007 9:54 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Contra and Gradius Hi, While we're talking about classic games, does anyone remember a couple series named Contra and Gradius? [Audyssey] Classic Remakes
Wow, this is definitely an interesting turn in audio gaming. I like where we're going with these classic games, and if you ask me, remaking classics for audio gamers should be just that, with sound effects and such in tact. Perhaps that's why I could never get into Monty, its supposed to retain the games originality, but its so modernized that it doesn't feel like a classic anymore. Anyway, that's not the point of this message. I was thinking of a couple more side scrollers. It'd be cool to see an audio version of Double Dragon. Anyone remember that game? Ah yes, back in the day I could actually get all the way to the end of the fourth level. It was so fun, from flinging enemies off of buildings to picking up lead pipes and going crazy, even to getting womped by the various bosses of the game. And my personal favorite level, flying in a helicopter, doors fully open. The idea was to throw your opponents out of the copter or otherwise disable them while not falling out of the vehicle yourself. Those were the days. I could always get to the end of the fourth level, but there was a trap at the end that foiled me every time involving some conveyor belts and spikes. I tried to get that far a few days ago without any luck. Along with TMNT and many of these other classics, this would be an awesome remake, and honestly I think this is one of the ones that could be modernized without taking away from the classic spirit of the game. You know, kind of like Danger City. ___ Gamers mailing list .. You found out the Foot Clan has bombed the city dam, and you have to swim down and stop it from being destroyed. As was mentioned TMNT II had some additional things that were cooler. On many of the levels you got to fight Baxter's mousers which were fun to bash around. Of course, in TMNT II the battle with Shredder was fantastic. He would make a double of himself somehow and you had to fight both of them. If you killed the double Shredder would just make a new double. You had to kill or knock out the real Shredder to actually win the game, and sometimes you didn't know which was real and whichwas the double. Mich wrote: yes I loved Ninja Turtles as well. Hi, no, no. These files are just the installation itself. So you should unpack them into a temporary folder of your choice. Then there will be setup.exe or dxsetup.exe, I don't remember the exact name, but it'll have something to do with setup. :-) Run this file and just keepon clicking next till everything's installed, then you can delete them temp folder. Re: [Audyssey] Randomising Montezuma's Revenge.
Hi, My guess is the easiest way to create maps for an end user is to use xml files with a series of variables. Then, all the end user would need do is phil in the values they want for walls, monsters, etc and drop it in the folder. For example, WallBottom=30 WallTop=21, and so on. That is certainly allot easier than what I am doing which is a loop like for (int i = 21; i 30; i++) temple.Add(wall, 0, i); I could still have the engine do that, but read from the variables in the xml data file. Hi, Yeah, the TMNT games had cool music, and I have midis of all the TMNT games. So I could do either TMNT 1 or 2 as far as effects and music goes. TMNT 1 wasn't that bad. The only part I didn't really like was the ppart where you got in the Turtle van and drove around New York looking for the hideout where they were hiding Splinter. TMNT 2 really got more into the beat-em-up seen and there was little down time. From a programming angle TMNT II would be much easier to program. Bryan Peterson wrote: I could agree to that. Re: [Audyssey] Problum when Starting Monty.
Hi William, Keep in mind there are several DirectX versions on the official DirectX site. If you want the latest runtime go to www.usagames.us/requirements.html and download the June runtime. It is something like 53 MB. Willem wrote: I'm not sure the DX web setup tool includes the June 2007 updates. I don't know why. I also ended up downloading the full runtime, but it was only 30+ mb. Re: [Audyssey] Contra and Gradius
Hi, Yeah, Contra was tough even for the sightees. I could get through a few levels, but I don't believe I ever completed that one. Interesting enough I see I still have it in my closet in my box of NES games. Shadow Dragon wrote: Nope. ___ Gamers mailing list .. [Audyssey] what about sircus charlie!
Nice game liam I played tv games with my sighted friends when I was small and those games had exactly the samed kind of sounds as this game, so this means that the tv games sold in south africa is actually also Nintendo. Its not video games, its games that are played on a standard tv set. You plug the cartridge into the tv and then you configure a channel on the tv to play the games. So then sircus Charlie is then also a Nintendo game? If I give him a bit of background about the game, I hope liam would be able to use his creative juices to create an accessible sircus Charlie. The sircus Charlie game consisted of 5 levels. Level1 is fire rings. You are standing on the back of a lion and you have to navigate the lion to jump through fire rings and over pots of fire. In level2 you are walking on a rope high in the air and you have to jump across monkeys. The monkeys also walks across the rope trying to knock you off the rope. There is a big blue monkey; he is especially tricky to avoid. Level3 is huge balls. Its huge colored balls you have to jump across. You are standing on a ball, then the next ball comes rolling to you and you have to jump onto it. if you don't jump onto it the ball you are standing on rolls from underneath you and you fall to the ground loosing a life. Level4 is donkeys. If I remember correctly you stand on the back of the donkey and then you have to jump onto a trampoleen and then you have to jump back onto the donkey's back again. In level5 you sit on a swing and you have to jump onto a trampoleen that is far underneath you and then jump back onto the swing again. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Classic Remakes
Hi, Well, Monty retains allot of the game play from the classic, but I really had to give the sounds a modern day sound scheme to make it playable. How else would you find the platforms, skulls, etc. They didn't really have effects and it was very visually oriented. By the way, the level in Double Dragon where you were in a helicopter was Double Dragon II or III. It wasn'the original Double Dragon. I think though the helicopter was Double Dragon *II. Anyway, I have all thre of them, and they were among my favorite NES games. Yeah, Double Dragon would probably be all right modernised. Fist sounds, true helicopter sounds, etc wouldn't at all detract from the game. Shadow Dragon wrote: Wow, this is definitely an interesting turn in audio gaming. Re: [Audyssey] new game
Hi Liam, Well, a couple of ideas I'd like is to be able to actually move around to shoot the ducks as you could in Duck Hunt. After all you had to move the gun to actually aim and fire. The other is Duck Hunt needs a pause game feature. If you recieve a phone call, your wife is calling you to the table, etc there is no way to stop and resume the current game. You jus sort of have to exit the game or let it ruin your high score and end itself. Either way isn't fun if you are say level 5, doing good, and have to leave suddenly. Re: [Audyssey] Sapi issues
I don't know if it will help because I'm not having problems, but when debug is turned on and a bug is encountered in a program, Microsoft tells you of the bug, stops the program and lets you either fix it or just sto the program. It will often (maybe always) not work through the bug itself. I found when I turned debug off that I sailed marily past bugs in programs that had nothing to do with me or my operation without even being aware they were there. It's worth a try. [Audyssey] Toomb Raider was new game
Hi, there were actually several games of Toomb Raider. There was the classic side-scroller you mentioned, but later versions of the game really got good. Toomb Raider was one of my 5 favorites when I was sighted, and believe me it is on my wish list to program as I get time to do so. Trenton Matthews wrote: If a Tomb Raider game was made for the blind, I'll definitely go for a beta-testing it! Tomb Raider after all was a side-scroller on the gamboy-color, and I've been trying to find it, with no luck so far. Curse Of The Sword its called. As for Duck Hunt, in about 30 seconds after I send off this email, I'm checking it out! Its strange though, the games not mentioned on the L-works web site yet. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi Trouble, That was my thoughts as well. They need a copy of the Visual C# 2005 debugger which would tell what was the matter, but that is a massive install just to gather info. Hi all, I am throwing this out here for public discussion. Since this effects all of you as well as me I think this needs public discussion. As you know I have written two games that requires the Microsoft .Net Framework and DirectX 9.0C using C#.Net. Well, since choosing this path I've had nothing but headaches and trouble getting those technologies working on end user systems. In most cases the game runs, but now and then there is a system or more that can't simply be fixed, and the games won't run reliably. I think allot of this boils down to using new non-standard Microsoft technologies, and these new technologies are not reliable for mass distribution. At least, not until all of this is packaged as a core part of Windows. They are a part of Vista, but those versions are not completely compatible with the versions I am using so that means the older ones needs installed nullifying the fact they are there in Vista already. My current thought is after Montezuma's Revenge is released I should rewrite the USA Games engine in C++. The reason is I can use core MS Windows technologies such as the standard Win32 API, and even support DirectX 8 or 9 with no problems. Since I won't require the .Net libs for DirectX upgrading to the latest DirectX won't be as necessary as it is now. The major advantage here will be improved performance, greater security, and games should in theory just install and run without having to install a bunch of other things before hand. Obviously, it is too late for Montezuma's Revenge and STFC 1.0 at this point, but if we decide to go with say C++ I could write a new engine, and convert USA Raceway to C++. Therefor, when Raceway is released we won't have to hastle with figuring out which version of the .Net framework is installed, if the DirectX managed components are installed, if they are up to date, and so on. No, There is a debug option for Internet Explorer and another just below it for OTHER. hi tom. I for one think that you should go for it. write the games in c++ or even VB6 or what ever langwige the games of Shades of Doom and the games from L Works are written in. Speaking from a end user's experience and having no knollige of programming or programming games. I have to say that The games like Shades of Doom and the ones from L Works run with no problem on my pc. As you know Monty and STFC Well I had no luck in running those. Hi Tom; You bring up a good point; the .net platform can be a pain every now and then. Just a few questions; 1. How much longer would it take you to program a game in C++ rather then C#? 2. Witch language do you feel the most comfortable in? I know you can program in both (wish I could; C++ and the Win32 API gave me nightmares) but witch one do you like more? 3. Re: [Audyssey] Classic Remakes
Yeah, my bad, Double Dragon2 was the one I meant. The original Double Dragon, and Double Dragon3, from my experiences, weren't nearly as fun for some reason. I just loved how advanced Double Dragon2 was for its age, you could actually grapple your opponents and throw them into other opponents, off builings, into spikes, and all kinds of cool things. Makes me wish I still had my old NES instead of having to rely on emulation. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 1:18 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Classic Remakes Hi, Well, Monty retains allot of the game play from the classic, but I really had to give the sounds a modern day sound scheme to make it playable. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Hi Charles, For the widest possible number of machines an app in C++ using the Win32 API and DirectX 8 or 9 would do it. The reason is the Win32 API is the very core of the Windows os. Dll files like user32.dll, kernal32.dll, etc have been around for ages and have simply been upgraded as each new version of Windows came out. That doesn't change much from version to version, even when it is upgraded for say Vista it is largely backward compatible with Windows 2000 XP and to some degree even the older 9x versions. So if I wrote a game using the Windows Platform SDK for Windows XP I could easily reach Win 2000 and Vista without allot of differences in those libs. Not that I am immediately aware of at any rate. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Hi Sean, I have answered your questions below in a question and answer format. 1. How much longer would it take you to program a game in C++ rather then C#? Well, Once I wrote the core headers and other cpp files I use for my game core there wouldn't be that much of a difference in time between the two languages. For example I have a class in C# called Formula.cs which holds all my common math functions. Once I converted it to C++ like formulas.cpp I'd esentually have the same functionality. Just include Formula.cpp in a game and never have to write all those formulas down again. That saves allot of time. 2. Witch language do you feel the most comfortable in? I know you can program in both (wish I could; C++ and the Win32 API gave me nightmares) but witch one do you like more? Well, I love C#.Net for it's simplicity and .Net acts as a handy little bridge between you and the Win32 API. That is why C#.Net is a high level language, because you don't have to deal directly with the Windows core. However, that has proven to be a problematic way of coding games. I like C++, and have always liked C++, because it is truly the most powerful programming language on the planet. It also is the core language of Mac OS, Linux, Windows, and what you learn applies just about everywhere except the headers and libs might be different when dealing with cross platform apps. I would say for writing games I am most relaxed using C# to write games just because it is what I have used for the passed two years, but I could just as easily do it in C++ once I brushed some of the rust off my C++ and Win32 skills and got to work. As for the Win32 API it is a pain if you don't know much about it, but fortunately games don't need more than a basic core in Win32. You won't be interacting with the Kernel, Shell, User interface much, so mostly it is DirectX and whatever you need to draw the Window to the screen which happens to be Windows.h. 3. How long would switching languages delay USA Raceway? Well, the delays would only set me back a couple of months on that title. Most of it would be spend on coding the new engine and debugging it. Since i know what functions I need, how I want them structured, etc that is pretty easy as all I have to do is read the C# code and translate to C++. Once that was done read my code for the game and translate it using the new engine. So this is more a matter of not figuring out what to do, but more a matter of reading what I wrote and rewriting it in the new language. Kind of like reading abook in French and translating it to English, but not that hard. (Grin) ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Hi Mich, Those games you mentioned are written in Visual Basic 6. The only reason I would decide against VB 6 is the technology is extremely old, and Microsoft has publically announced they are dropping support for it next year. So I wouldn't go that way. However, C++ is a core language of Windows and anything written in it is likely to be well supported and quite stable. Yeah, your system is one that is frustrating me, and that kind of unexplained brakage is what I would like to avoid. Mich wrote: hi tom. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Hi Shaun, Ahem... Not everything is going .Net though Microsoft is really pushing the technology. yes, it is true it is becoming more and more standardised, but by no means will everything go .Net. As far as C++ being hard or old that isn't as bad as you think. C++ is used by every os for development, and I don't see it going away anytime in the next several years. The Win32 API is still the core component for Windows development under Vista, and I have heard no announcements Microsoft will be changing it. As for going back to VB 6 no way. Using a language that Microsoft is dropping next year for a new product would be insanity. Using C++ however is fine since it is supported, and will be supported for years to come. shaun everiss wrote: You can get dotnet 3 in windowsupdate. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Hi Casey, It should work just fine on Vista right out of the box. Vista already supports DirectX 8, 9, and 10 for C++ applications so no matter which version of those I chose Vista would be cool. The difference here is for games using .Net the managed components needs installed, and why games fail under .Net. As for C++ itself the os itself is written in C++, and all the core libraries are for C++. The Win32 API is litterally the Windows core, and the API might be upgraded but is backwards compatible with Windows XP and 2000. Else apps would be breaking like mad between Windows versions. It is important to note apps like MS Word is a Win32 application. Since the Win32 API is backwards compatible you can install Word 2000 to Vista and run it successfully even though MS doesn't recommend it. Casey wrote: I think this sounds good. I would like to be sure that these games written in c++ will work under Vista? Wood the fact that it uses directX 10 play into this at all? Thanks for letting us know. ___ Gamers mailing list .. [Audyssey] beep
after speaking with liam, he's agreed that since i made it, beep is my game, therefore it is now released. it has quite a history does this game, read up about it at x-sight.brandoncole.net. this is the first game x-sight have actually personally made, even though it is very very simple, and very very bland, one of you may actually get bored enough to play it one day, ya never know! lol as this was just about a 30-minute project, and just about as simple as standing up, i'm also releasing it as open source, it makes use of timers which i'm not too familiar with yet, the game itself works, but if there is anything that would work instead of resetting the timers all the time then please do let me know. lol. and also, if you can give me any suggestions, then i can expand it for ya. again, any comments please feel free to email me on here or offlist or msn me or skype me or whatever. regards, damien ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development.
Sounds like a good idea! Although, speaking of games, will the star Wars game be coming to the blind someday? The trailer was quite good, and also, the music was nice! I say, make a sound track of the music for Monty when its released. The sound track on Cd of course. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 1:59 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Possible changes in USA Games Development. What does everyone think? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] new game
Also, would there be a way to record the sound of the ducks' quack separately, then have that I'm guessing, symbol sound in the backround, so that the duck can fly across the area? And I can't wait for the Clay Shooting! I could play that level of duck hunt pretty well, and I can not even see where I was shooting! By the way, thanks to my dad helpping me play that game, he told me the gun was orange. Too bad it doesn't work on a PC.. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 1:26 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] new game Hi Liam, Well, a couple of ideas I'd like is to be able to actually move around to shoot the ducks as you could in Duck Hunt.
