[fsug-tvm] Debian Jessie slowing down
Dear friends, I find that Debian Jessie that I use on my laptop, slows down significantly if I don't reboot for a couple of days and just hibernate or suspend (or even just leave it running). Any idea why that happens and what could be a solution? I use Jessie with Mate desktop, as it is closest to the GNOME-2 that I used to run. I have heard people boast that they just leave the system running for days on end. I guess I must be doing something wrong. Thanks for any help. Sasi -- V. [fsug-tvm] Virtualisation
Dear friends, I am thinking of installing VirtualBox on my laptop. I see good reviews about it, and confirmation from some Oracle employees that work is continuing seriously on it. Anyone here with experience in installing it? I need to install other operating systems also over it. Forwarded Message From: nbs n...@sonic.net Reply-to: b...@newbreedsoftware.com To: sasi@gmail.com Subject: Tux Paint 0.9.22 has been released; thank you! Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2014 12:35:23 -0700 Hi, this is Bill Kendrick from the Tux Paint project. I'm emailing everyone who was involved in working on Tux Paint over the past 5 years (since our last release). It's been a long time coming, but the latest version of Tux Paint friends have been released! Version 0.9.22 was released as source-code a few days ago, and versions for RHEL 4, 5, 6, 7 and compatible RPM-based Linux distributions, and Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 (as both EXE installer, and portable, self-contained ZIP) have been made available since then. A press release has been created (and translated to a few other languages) which covers the major enhancements: http://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.22-press-release-en.php3 Downloads are available at: * Windows (XP thru 8) installer EXE http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/windows/ * Windows (XP thru 8) ZIP http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/windows-zip/ * RHEL (4 thru 7) RPMs http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/linux-rpm/ * source tarball http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/source/ A Mac OS X version is still forthcoming, and details on the pkgsrc (e.g., NetBSD) packages will be posted on the website soon. Thank you for your contributions, and please consider doing me the favor of sharing this news (and celebrating your work!) with your friends family! PS - if you're on Facebook, and not already part of them, there is both a 'page' (that you and your friends can 'Like'), and a 'group' for Tux Paint: * https://www.facebook.com/TuxPaint * https://www.facebook.com/groups/6825055151/ -bill! b...@newbreedsoftware.com http://www.tuxpaint.org/ (Your address: sasi@gmail.com ) -- V. Dear friends, In this thread, the entire history of the conversation is being repeatedly sent and received by everyone, and also stored in the server so many times over and over. It would help readers and the archives if we edited out the unnecessary portions of the previous mails and retained only that part that is necessary for readers to understand what is being referred to. And, it would also help if members added their contribution to the end of the mail, so that anyone reading it will get a clear idea of what is happening, rather than having to read backwards the entire conversation. [fsug-tvm] Good news from down under
It seems the New Zealand governments would like to promote innovation and not restriction. See this news: New Zealand has finally passed a new Patents Billhttp://www.parliament.nz/en-nz/pb/legislation/bills/00DBHOH_BILL8651_1/patents-billthat will effectively outlaw software patents after five years of debate, delay, and intense lobbying from multinational software vendors. Aptly named Commerce Minister Craig Foss welcomed the modernisation of the patents law, saying it marked a significant step towards driving innovation in New Zealand. By clarifying the definition of what can be patented, we are giving New Zealand businesses more flexibility to adapt and improve existing inventions, while continuing to protect genuine innovations, Foss said. [fsug-tvm] Configuring Netgear wifi router
Dear friends, I am trying to configure a Netgear wifi router sith my Asianet cable modem. Whatever I have tried, I get an Authentication failure message when I try to connect to the wifi. My configuration has been like this: Security Options: WEP Authentication type: Automatic Encryption strength: 64 bit Passphrase: Mypassword After entering all this, I click Generate and then Apply. But then if I try to connect my phone, it says, Authentication Error. My laptop also does not connect when I give the password. Tried all possible authentication types, namely, Automatic, Open System and Shared Key. None of them seems to work. Am I doing something wrong? Or could this mean that the router is spoilt? The home directory does not get mounted automatically when booting and has to be manually mounted each time. The fstab line reads: /dev/sdb5 /home rw,user,auto1 2. Now I find that it is not detecting my usb printer that I need now. It looks like I better install another distro. I had been using Mint debian for a long time. But the iso images I downloaded of the latest Mint doesn't seem to work properly. Could you give suggestions for a good distro, preferably based on debian? Regards, Sasi -- V. [fsug-tvm] Problem with evolution mail client
Dear friends, I had been using Mint Debian for a long time now and had no problem. Recently it develoed some trouble and I had to reinstall my OS. I chose Debian Wheezy as the base with applications from unstable. This is a configuration that I had tried earlier successfully. Hollywood is at it again. Its latest ploy to take over the Web? Use its influence at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to weave Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into HTML5 Giants like Netflix, Google, Microsoft, and the BBC are all rallying behind this disastrous proposal, which flies in the face of the W3C's mission to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential. The Republican Party, by mistake, seems to have made some sensible comments, though still not in public, about the so-called Intellectual Property rights. So sorry to top post. I am writing from my Android phone and I dont find a way to write at the end or to delete unnecessary text. Good work, Praveen. Not being a developer, I am unable to contribute significantly here. But I hope developers here will contribute to the wiki and build a good database of project ideas for students. Its sort of the same in other colleges also. My girl friend id doing degree physics and is proud of her 3.63/4 GPA from a *pretty awesome college*. I knew more physics when I was in 12th std. The worst thing is that colleges is Kerala (especially NITC) even though have a lot of teachers who barely know anything or teach things, makes the students attend 80% classes. A lot of colleges at least allow students to work on a major project alone during their final semester. We even don't have the liberty to do that here. [fsug-tvm] Booting from USB
I have been using Linux Mint for some time now. Recently, my hard disk started giving trouble and I am planning to get a new laptop. But, considering that I have to use this till I get a new one. My bios has two boot options that say USB cd rom and USB floppy, but no USB flash drive or any such. I guess this is because my laptop and, consequently, its bios is more than five years old. Anyway, I cross posted this because I thought it affected every computer user today - more so the ordinary people. As long as there is an option to disable secure boot, newer computer systems can be used exactly the same way as with BIOS - but with all advantages of UEFI. But Microsoft has already made it clear to OEMs that ARM based systems running windows MUST NOT have an option to disable secure boot. How long before they arm twist OEMs to do the same for x86? If that happens, our only option will be to add our own cryptographic key or the distro's cryptographic key to the UEFI memory (assuming that atleast this option is not taken away). The Secure Boot technology in present form is mostly harmless for advanced users who want to install their own OSs line Gnu/Linux (either with some extra effort, or by disabling secure boot). Novice may find the extra steps associated with secure boot a little intimidating. But a danger exists that the market monopolies may coax the system manufacturers (OEMs) to take away options to disable secure boot or add your own keys. If that happens, it will become impossible to install other OSs without rooting the motherboard. I am leaving this here for further thoughts. Dear Visakh, Thank you for posting it to smc. That is where I should have originally posted it, and, in fact, that is what I thought I had done. Some stupid oversight it was to post it to lug. Anyway, there is no need to apologise. You only corrected a mistake that I made. Thanks again and regards, Sasi -- V. Sasi Kumar Free Software Foundation of India http://swatantryam.blogspot.com -- Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Microsoft coming back?
Friends, Today's newspaper says that the state government is discussing with Microsoft for collaborating in education, e-governance and what-not. This is supposed to bring transparency into governance. But this discussion itself appears very opaque. It is not at all clear what is wrong with the present system that uses Free Software in education. And it is strange that they think that Microsoft can bring transparency into e-governance. The result will be that the government will pay tons of money to the company as licence fees since all schools will have to migrate back to Windoze et al. Moreover, all teachers will have to be retrained, textbooks will have to be rewritten, and worst of all, it would be virtually impossible to bring Free Software back not only into schools but also into higher education. It is to be remembered that many, if not most research labs in India use GNU/Linux for their scientific computation and most advertisements for positions in these labs ask for knowledge of GNU/Linux and some scripting languages. So, will this mean that our students won't find it easy to apply for these positions? Finally, the national education policy itself speaks about encouraging Free Software and sharing. So where is the need to go to Microsoft now? Friends, we need to do something about this. I know that with this government, it won't be easy to push for Free Software, but we certainly cannot remain silent spectators to this looting. It would be good if someone can start a representation to the government and post it to the group or a wiki, so that others can work on it as we used to do and send it to the Chief Minister, Education Minister and others. And, perhaps, we can start a media campaign too. Ideas welcome. Best, Sasi -- V. Sasi Kumar Free Software Foundation of India http://swatantryam.blogspot.com -- Freedom is the only law. [fsug-tvm] Copying text from pdf document - problem
Dear friends, I am writing this now because I am facing a problem for the first time and I am not able to find a solution. I have copied text from pdf files opened in evince and pasted them to get good results so many times. The only times I could not do it was when they had Malayalam text, whether from a document created using LaTeX or otherwise. I have so far have had no problems in copying English text from pdf files.I have done that from documents opened in evince or kpdf. But, now I am facing such a problem when I try to copy from a particular document downloaded from the Internet. I think it was created using TeX for two reasons. First of all the text shown at the top of the window says it is a dvi file. Secondly, it was created by the creator of TeX himself, the inimitable Prof. Donald Knuth himself. I wanted to quote his words in an article I am writing and thought I could avoid errors and also make it easier if I just copied and pasted the text. But I got gibberish when I pasted the text into an editor. I also tried converting the entire document into text using pdftotext, pdftosrc and pdftabw. But every time, I got only gibberish. Does anyone here understand what could be going wrong? Thanks for any help or even any pointers that you may give. Best, Sasi -- V. Background - I started using computers when I was 13, we had PCs with DOS at school and we had to learn gwbasic! I came to know about GNU/Linux via news paper articles but I got to use it only when I started my engineering course. We had Red Hat Linux 9 on our college lab systems with monochrome terminals. I was system administrator of college lab by the time I was finishing my 4 year course and I got to try various distributions - slackware, suse and many more small ones. We had one debian server too in the lab. I was attracted by the Free Software philosophy and we started a GNU/Linux user group a foss event (http://fossmeet.in) in our college. I volunteered for http://foss.in and started organizing many small foss events and regular meeting of Free Software User Group Bangalore. We always focused our advocacy on students and got many contributors. Free Software contributions: I started my Free Software contributions via Debian Installer Malayalam translations. We reactivated Swathanthra Malayalam Computing (http://smc.org.in) and started maintaining translations of GNOME, KDE and other Free Software. As a community we worked on all aspects of language computing including fonts, complex text rendering, input methods and other tools like spell checkers, text to speech systems etc. We were part of Google Summer of Code in 2007 and I was a mentor (students I mentored that year became mentors for the next year!). I'm also helping with operations of Chamba Free/Open/Swathnthra/Libre/Mukt Cinema Project (http://chambaproject.in). Debian contributions: I started maintaining lekonee-gnome, a word press blog client written by my friend and colleague Kushal Das. I was always eager to try newer version of GNOME and KDE and so I started co-maintaining libdbusmenu-qt. I came to ruby packaging when I wanted to package diaspora federated social networking software (http://diasporaproject.org/) in debian. I was involved in many ruby gem transitions to new gem2deb based packaging helper. I have been giving many debian packaging sessions and helped organize many mini debian conferences across India (http://in2010.mini.debconf.org/and http://in2011.mini.debconf.org/). Motivation: My main motivation in Free Software is the spirit of building things we need as a community. Since I had so many things in my wishlist, I knew I have to get more people if I want to see all of them become a reality. So my motivation in contributing to Free Software is to get as many of my wishlist items a reality by working with people who share the same wishlist or at least some items in it. The reason I chose debian over other distributions is its volunteer and democratic/do-o-cratic nature. I wanted to spent my time with a community that would be an equal partner with Free Software community and I wanted my voice to be heard by the community based on my contributions (not to be rejected by people who are in positions of power, acquired by privileged processes not available to me). Focus: In debian I would like to focus on diaspora packaging, getting more contributors by organizing debian events and mentoring new contributors. -- [It is not] possible to distinguish between 'numerical' and 'nonnumerical' algorithms, as if numbers were somehow different from other kinds of precise information. - Donald Knuth -- V. [fsug-tvm] Problem in Android
Friends, I am facing another problem in my Android phone now. Finding that Got-to-do is a good task manager, I downloaded the apk file from a site and installed it. Now, when I try to start the application, it says that it was not obtained from Google Play, and then doesn't run. I have earlier installed other apps from third sources and have had no problem in running them. I don't understand why this alone is not running. Does anyone here have a similar experience? It was only a few months back that I got an Android phone, so I didn't have much interest in it till recently. Let me ask a question all the same. Today, after I completed a phone call that came from abroad, I found that more than 200 rupees had been cut from my balance. Thinking that they had started charging for incoming calls, I called the Customer Service and they told me that I had used the Internet to the extent of 19.5 MB, which caused the charge because I didn't have a GPRS scheme. The thing is that I had not consciously used the Internet for any purpose. I think the usage was caused by background usage by applications such as Latitude or some such. Now, I would like to know how I can prevent this. I also get frequent messages saying the last call cost something like Re. 0.10 or so, though the call time shows 0 minute. [fsug-tvm] users may lose Internet in July
Maybe good news for Free Software enthusiasts: Over half a million users may lose Internet in July, including thousands in India Washington: For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this summer. Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut down. The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're infected and explain how to fix the problem.
