[fsug-tvm] Debian Jessie slowing down

2015-07-28 Thread Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I find that Debian Jessie that I use on my laptop, slows down significantly
if I don't reboot for a couple of days and just hibernate or suspend (or
even just leave it running). Any idea why that happens and what could be a
solution? I use Jessie with Mate desktop, as it is closest to the GNOME-2
that I used to run. I have heard people boast that they just leave the
system running for days on end. I guess I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks for any help.

Another doubt, Praveen. Since I will be installing virt-manager from

guest operating systems? Do I have to make space for them also in my
root partition? Or can I install them in any other partition? If the
former, I may have to reinstall my whole system. I would then prefer to
install the second OS separately, as dual boot.

[fsug-tvm] Virtualisation

2015-06-04 Thread Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I am thinking of installing VirtualBox on my laptop. I see good reviews
about it, and confirmation from some Oracle employees that work is
continuing seriously on it. Anyone here with experience in installing it? I
need to install other operating systems also over it. My laptop's hard disk
has some space that I can use (something like a 100 GB or so) but just 4GB
RAM. Was wondering if that is sufficient. Also may need some guidance
eventually.

Thank you, Praveen, I was not posting to diaspora for some time and then I

automatically. I shall do as you said. Thanks.

It is like an email address, you just need one to connect to people on
every other pod. Now I can see three diaspora accounts in your name. If
you are not planning to use the other ids, you could delete them or mark
your profile as not search-able in settings, to avoid confusion. You can
also update name of your old profile to mention, you have moved to a new
 pod.

You can share this url http://diasp.in/u/sasi which will have your posts
as well and people who already signed up on other pods can find you. The
invite url is useful when people don't have a diaspora id and I think is
single invites, one invite code can be used only by one person. When I
clicked on that link, it said the invite is already used.

Subject: Tux Paint 0.9.22 has been released; thank you!
Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2014 12:35:23 -0700

Hi, this is Bill Kendrick from the Tux Paint project. I'm emailing everyone
who was involved in working on Tux Paint over the past 5 years (since our
last release).

It's been a long time coming, but the latest version of Tux Paint friends
have been released! Version 0.9.22 was released as source-code a few
days ago, and versions for RHEL 4, 5, 6, 7 and compatible RPM-based Linux
distributions, and Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 (as both EXE installer, and
portable, self-contained ZIP) have been made available since then.

A press release has been created (and translated to a few other languages)
which covers the major enhancements:

  http://tuxpaint.org/latest/tuxpaint-0.9.22-press-release-en.php3

Downloads are available at:

 * Windows (XP thru 8) installer EXE
   http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/windows/

 * Windows (XP thru 8) ZIP
   http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/windows-zip/

 * RHEL (4 thru 7) RPMs
   http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/linux-rpm/

 * source tarball
   http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/source/

A Mac OS X version is still forthcoming, and details on the pkgsrc
(e.g., NetBSD) packages will be posted on the website soon.

Thank you for your contributions, and please consider doing me the favor
of sharing this news (and celebrating your work!) with your friends family!

PS - if you're on Facebook, and not already part of them, there is both
a 'page' (that you and your friends can 'Like'), and a 'group' for Tux Paint:

Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: Help requested for route command ( To access other side of VPN Server )

2014-08-07 Thread V. Sasi Kumar

Dear friends,

In this thread, the entire history of the conversation is being
repeatedly sent and received by everyone, and also stored in the server
so many times over and over. It would help readers and the archives if
we edited out the unnecessary portions of the previous mails and
retained only that part that is necessary for readers to understand what
is being referred to. And, it would also help if members added their
contribution to the end of the mail, so that anyone reading it will get
a clear idea of what is happening, rather than having to read backwards
the entire conversation.

Hope we all can co-operate.

Clarification: I am not the list admin.

[fsug-tvm] SIP Provider

I have linphone installed in my laptop and my cell phone. Now, in order to
call other cell phones or landline numbers, I understand that I need to
register with some SIP service provider and pay him some money. After
installation of linphone, I registered with linphone.org and am now able to
make voip calls to my friends who also have registered there. Could someone
guide me to register with an SIP provider in India? Anyone with experience
with any such provider?

Thanks for any help in the matter

[fsug-tvm] Good news from down under

2013-09-23 Thread Sasi Kumar
It seems the New Zealand governments would like to promote innovation and
not restriction. See this news:

New Zealand has finally passed a new Patents
Billhttp://www.parliament.nz/en-nz/pb/legislation/bills/00DBHOH_BILL8651_1/patents-billthat
will effectively outlaw software patents after five years of debate,
delay, and intense lobbying from multinational software vendors.
Aptly named Commerce Minister Craig Foss welcomed the modernisation of the
patents law, saying it marked a significant step towards driving
innovation in New Zealand.

By clarifying the definition of what can be patented, we are giving New
Zealand businesses more flexibility to adapt and improve existing
inventions, while continuing to protect genuine innovations, Foss said.
Read the whole news here:

[fsug-tvm] Configuring Netgear wifi router

2013-08-31 Thread Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I am trying to configure a Netgear wifi router sith my Asianet cable modem.
Whatever I have tried, I get an Authentication failure message when I try
to connect to the wifi. My configuration has been like this:

Security Options:

WEP
Authentication type: Automatic
Encryption strength: 64 bit
Passphrase: Mypassword

After entering all this, I click Generate and then Apply. But then if I
try to connect my phone, it says, Authentication Error. My laptop also
does not connect when I give the password. Tried all possible
authentication types, namely, Automatic, Open System and Shared Key. None
of them seems to work. Am I doing something wrong? Or could this mean that
the router is spoilt?

Requesting help from anyone who has some idea about this problem.

Thanks for any help.

Region has been Asia right from the beginning. But channel settings
don't seem to have an auto option. Only from 01 to 13. It was

use it again now. Had been lying idle at home.

If these did't work try to upgrade the firm ware.

Guess will have to try that.

Are you having trouble connecting to internet ...?

I have no trouble connecting to the Internet if I bypass the router. But when I
connect through the router, even cable connection doesn't seem to work! So am
wondering whether the router itself has become spoilt.

You need to install a package called unetbootin in your system first.
Open the application, choose the distro and the version, point it to the
iso you have downloaded and to your thumb drive and click install. It
will then make your thumb drive bootable and install ubuntu in it. It

Thank you, Jesse. The point is just saying install texlive does not get you
everything. I need to install omega and xelatex. In debian, that would be
apt-get install texlive-omega texlive-xetex. These packages can be searched
for and found in synaptic too. I searched in the pacman gui, but it said,
package not found. I have installed all texlive packages that I could
find that I need. Also, on the command line, how do I say install?

Thanks again,
Sasi

Thank you for the commands. I tried both, and also pacman -Ss
texlive-omega and pacman -Ss texlive-xetex. Both returned blank. I don't
think they are in the repositories, unless there are other repositories
that can be added. Of courese, one advantage of debian (and redhat too)
having been in existence for such a long time is that both have such a
huge set of packages.

I have now installed Manjaro Cinnamon and is using it. But find that I need
to relearn a lot of things. I use Malayalam a lot and I find that setting a
keyboars shortcut for switching keyboard is not very easy. Have failed to
do so till now. And, though pacman may be convenient for many people, I
used to enjoy the convenience of using the command line for installing

apt-get install packagename! I hardly used Synaptic.

Well, each distro will have its advantages and disadvantages and they will

[fsug-tvm] Suggestion requested for a good distro

2013-06-30 Thread Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I have been using debian-based distros for a long time now. Right now I
have debian wheezy with applications from debian testing installed. I have
used this combination very successfully before, but now find problems that
I am unable to cure. The home directory does not get mounted automatically
when booting and has to be manually mounted each time. The fstab line
reads: /dev/sdb5 /home rw,user,auto1 2.

Now I find that it is not detecting my usb printer that I need now. It
looks like I better install another distro. I had been using Mint debian
for a long time. But the iso images I downloaded of the latest Mint doesn't
seem to work properly. Could you give suggestions for a good distro,
preferably based on debian?

[fsug-tvm] Tell W3C: We don't want the Hollyweb

2013-04-15 Thread Sasi Kumar
Hollywood is at it again. Its latest ploy to take over the Web? Use its
influence at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to weave Digital
Restrictions Management (DRM) into HTML5
Giants like Netflix, Google, Microsoft, and the BBC are all rallying behind
this disastrous proposal, which flies in the face of the W3C's mission to
lead the World Wide Web to its full potential.
We're not going to let this slip through under the radar. More than 11,600
people have already signed this petition to stop DRM in HTML5. Join them
and help us build momentum to reach 50,000 signers by May 3rd, 2013, the
International Day Against DRM. We'll drive the message home by delivering
your signatures to the W3C (they're right down the street from us!) to make
your voices heard.

Need more information first? Read this article by our friends at the

This is what Stallman has been warning everyone about. Read his story,

[fsug-tvm] Mozilla Firefox tab groups

2012-11-28 Thread Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I am using Linux Mint recently reinstalled from
linuxmint-13-mate-dvd-nocodecs-32bit.iso. I have been using the same OS
for quite some time on an older machine. Since I do a lot of browsing
for different purposes, I really enjoy the tab grouping facility in
firefox. But, now I seem to be unable to do that in my browser. I don't
see the grouping icon or any menu for that. The firefox I have is
Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint -1.0. I am sure there must be others also
using Mint in this community. Was wondering whether anyone else has
faced the same problem and whether there is some way to get back the tab
grouping feature.

Thanks for any advice.

[fsug-tvm] Rethinking on copyright?

2012-11-19 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
The Republican Party, by mistake, seems to have made some sensible
comments, though still not in public, about the so-called Intellectual
Property rights. For instance, it points out that the three myths are,
in order, that “the purpose of copyright is to compensate the creator of
content,” that “copyright is free market capitalism at work,” and that
“the current copyright legal regime leads to the greatest innovation and
productivity.” Hope this will eventually lead to some changes there,
and, consequently, in the rest of the world.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Wikipedia app for Android

2012-10-31 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Very good. Many such projects have been launched or fully executed by
engineering students. Another one that comes to mind is Prabhu
Ramachandran's Mayavi. I am sure there must be more. Why are our (Kerala's)
students behind in this? Perhaps our developers should spend some more time
identifying projects for students and guiding them. I was once told by
engineering college teachers that both students and teachers lack good Free
Software project ideas. Perhaps we could start a wiki with such project
ideas? What do you all think?

Re: [fsug-tvm] Wikipedia app for Android

2012-10-31 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
So sorry to top post. I am writing from my Android phone and I dont find a way
to write at the end or to delete unnecessary text.

Good work, Praveen. Not being a developer, I am unable to contribute
significantly here. But I hope developers here will contribute to the wiki and
build a good database of project ideas for students. Also, as Praveen rightly
suggests, mentor students from some college(s). Hope that we will soon be
seeing several student projects in Free Software flowering in our colleges.

Thanks and good luck,
Sasi

 Best,
 Sasi

a wiki page would be a good start, I tried to collect some ideas
earlier http://www.fosscommunity.in/wiki/Projects/TaskList We can use
that to collect more.

Also it would be good to have every one in the community regularly
interacting with students of at least one engineering college. I
regularly interact with students of MES Kuttippuram, NSS Palakkad and
COEP Pune. We should start Free Software communities in more campuses
and also make sure existing communities are passed on to the next
batch before the current active batch leaves (misses this step most of
the time).

If there is students from colleges other than the colleges listed
there, reply here and we can find some one to mentor your community.

That is true of virtually all educational institutions in the state and most

IMHO education in kerala is absolutely hopeless and so bookish.

I was fortunate enough to get into undoubtedly the best engineering college
(NITC) in the state. All the system wants out of students is the ability to
mug up something from standard textbooks and vomit it on paper during the
examinations. Only a very few professors care more than that here. Its sort
of the same in other colleges also. My girl friend id doing degree physics
and is proud of her 3.63/4 GPA from a *pretty awesome college*. I knew more
physics when I was in 12th std. They barely learn anything in the whole
course. Fiddle with a few transistors, make an LED blink with 555
and electronics lab done! Write surprisingly stupid, silly
and childish exams, get awesome grades ans finally a degree. I have met CS
undergraduates who have not seen CLRS or SICP. The worst thing is that
colleges is Kerala (especially NITC) even though have a lot of teachers who
barely know anything or teach things, makes the students attend 80%
classes.

A lot of colleges at least allow students to work on a major project alone
during their final semester. We even don't have the liberty to do that
here. Even a lot of private colleges allow that these days.

Personally I don't have a solution to this. I would like to hear from
others.

wondering whether it could not be done as a project by one of the
thousands of B.Tech students in our colleges.

[fsug-tvm] Booting from USB

2012-10-09 Thread Sasi Kumar
I have been using Linux Mint for some time now. Recently, my hard disk
started giving trouble and I am planning to get a new laptop. But,
considering that I have to use this till I get a new one. I tried
installing the OS on a USB stick, and I was able to do that
successfully. But I find that my laptop does not boot from it, though
I tried it on a desktop and it worked. My bios has two boot options
that say USB cd rom and USB floppy, but no USB flash drive or any
such. I guess this is because my laptop and, consequently, its bios is
more than five years old. So, I was wondering whether I would be able
to boot from the thumb drive if I upgrade my bios. Any pointers on
this would be quite welcome.

Thanks and regards,

It is usually at Harddisk section (not USB-HDD). Check from there.

It is all right, Visakh. Your language is among the better ones in this

didn't make any serious mistake there. Somehow I misunderstood it. It
was my fault, and sorry for that. So just forget it.

Anyway, I cross posted this because I thought it affected every
computer user today - more so the ordinary people. As long as there is
an option to disable secure boot, newer computer systems can be used
exactly the same way as with BIOS - but with all advantages of UEFI.
But Microsoft has already made it clear to OEMs that ARM based systems
running windows MUST NOT have an option to disable secure boot. How
long before they arm twist OEMs to do the same for x86? If that
happens, our only option will be to add our own cryptographic key or
the distro's cryptographic key to the UEFI memory (assuming that
atleast this option is not taken away). Anyways, it will be one hell
of a headache to install other OSs from then on.

Yes, very true. I didn't think that way. Thanks for pointing it out.
Guess, I should post it in some of the national fora too. Perhaps,
someone, maybe Santhosh, can write an article on it in Malayalam (I mean
both language and the magazine).

this issue will become prominent very soon - as the latest windows 8
may compulsorily require UEFI + Secure Boot in place of the age old
BIOS. Newer systems may all have only UEFI. The Secure Boot technology
in present form is mostly harmless for advanced users who want to
install their own OSs line Gnu/Linux (either with some extra effort,
or by disabling secure boot). Novice may find the extra steps
associated with secure boot a little intimidating. But a danger exists
that the market monopolies may coax the system manufacturers (OEMs) to
take away options to disable secure boot or add your own keys. If that
happens, it will become impossible to install other OSs without
rooting the motherboard. I am leaving this here for further thoughts.

Dear Visakh,

Thank you for posting it to smc. That is where I should have originally

[fsug-tvm] Microsoft coming back?

2012-07-03 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Friends,

Today's newspaper says that the state government is discussing with
Microsoft for collaborating in education, e-governance and what-not.
This is supposed to bring transparency into governance. But this
discussion itself appears very opaque. It is not at all clear what is
wrong with the present system that uses Free Software in education. And
it is strange that they think that Microsoft can bring transparency into
e-governance. The result will be that the government will pay tons of
money to the company as licence fees since all schools will have to
migrate back to Windoze et al. Moreover, all teachers will have to be
retrained, textbooks will have to be rewritten, and worst of all, it
would be virtually impossible to bring Free Software back not only into
schools but also into higher education. It is to be remembered that
many, if not most research labs in India use GNU/Linux for their
scientific computation and most advertisements for positions in these
labs ask for knowledge of GNU/Linux and some scripting languages. So,
will this mean that our students won't find it easy to apply for these
positions? Finally, the national education policy itself speaks about
encouraging Free Software and sharing. So where is the need to go to
Microsoft now?

Friends, we need to do something about this. I know that with this
government, it won't be easy to push for Free Software, but we certainly
cannot remain silent spectators to this looting.

It would be good if someone can start a representation to the government
and post it to the group or a wiki, so that others can work on it as we
used to do and send it to the Chief Minister, Education Minister and
others. And, perhaps, we can start a media campaign too. Ideas welcome.

Best,
Sasi

The document is encoded with some non-standard font (I think), that's
why we cab't able to copy the text. Google Docs has option to convert
PDF to text when we import a file. Docs might have used OCR since
direct text conversion is not possible.

Okay, that sounds sensible. I should have tried it before I gave up.

[fsug-tvm] Copying text from pdf document - problem

2012-06-16 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

I am writing this now because I am facing a problem for the first time
and I am not able to find a solution. I have copied text from pdf files
opened in evince and pasted them to get good results so many times. The
only times I could not do it was when they had Malayalam text, whether
from a document created using LaTeX or otherwise. I have so far have had
no problems in copying English text from pdf files.I have done that from
documents opened in evince or kpdf.

But, now I am facing such a problem when I try to copy from a particular
document downloaded from the Internet. I think it was created using TeX
for two reasons. First of all the text shown at the top of the window
says it is a dvi file. Secondly, it was created by the creator of TeX
himself, the inimitable Prof. Donald Knuth himself. I wanted to quote
his words in an article I am writing and thought I could avoid errors
and also make it easier if I just copied and pasted the text. But I got
gibberish when I pasted the text into an editor. I also tried converting
the entire document into text using pdftotext, pdftosrc and pdftabw. But
every time, I got only gibberish. Does anyone here understand what could
be going wrong?

Thanks for any help or even any pointers that you may give.

Best,
Sasi

Last name: Arimbrathodiyil
Key fingerprint: 084623DBEEAB39E671665CCA3EB46FBCE0C010D0
Account: praveen

 2. Background
 -

I started using computers when I was 13, we had PCs with DOS at school
and we had to learn gwbasic! I came to know about GNU/Linux via news
paper articles but I got to use it only when I started my engineering
course. We had Red Hat Linux 9 on our college lab systems with
monochrome terminals. I was system administrator of college lab by the
time I was finishing my 4 year course and I got to try various
distributions - slackware, suse and many more small ones. We had one
debian server too in the lab. I was attracted by the Free Software
philosophy and we started a GNU/Linux user group a foss event
(http://fossmeet.in) in our college. I volunteered for http://foss.in
and started organizing many small foss events and regular meeting of
Free Software User Group Bangalore. We always focused our advocacy on
 students and got many contributors.

 Free Software contributions:
I started my Free Software contributions via Debian Installer
Malayalam translations. We reactivated Swathanthra Malayalam Computing
(http://smc.org.in) and started maintaining translations of GNOME, KDE
and other Free Software. As a community we worked on all aspects of
language computing including fonts, complex text rendering, input
methods and other tools like spell checkers, text to speech systems
etc. We were part of Google Summer of Code in 2007 and I was a mentor
(students I mentored that year became mentors for the next year!). I'm
also helping with operations of Chamba Free/Open/Swathnthra/Libre/Mukt
 Cinema Project (http://chambaproject.in).

 Debian contributions:
I started maintaining lekonee-gnome, a word press blog client written
by my friend and colleague Kushal Das. I was always eager to try newer
version of GNOME and KDE and so I started co-maintaining
libdbusmenu-qt. I came to ruby packaging when I wanted to package
 diaspora federated social networking software
(http://diasporaproject.org/) in debian. I was involved in many ruby
gem transitions to new gem2deb based packaging helper. I have been
giving many debian packaging sessions and helped organize many mini
 debian conferences across India (http://in2010.mini.debconf.org/and
 http://in2011.mini.debconf.org/).

 Motivation:
My main motivation in Free Software is the spirit of building things
we need as a community. Since I had so many things in my wishlist, I
knew I have to get more people if I want to see all of them become a
reality. So my motivation in contributing to Free Software is to get
as many of my wishlist items a reality by working with people who
share the same wishlist or at least some items in it. The reason I
chose debian over other distributions is its volunteer and
democratic/do-o-cratic nature. I wanted to spent my time with a
community that would be an equal partner with Free Software community
and I wanted my voice to be heard by the community based on my
contributions (not to be rejected by people who are in positions of
power, acquired by privileged processes not available to me).

 Focus:
In debian I would like to focus on diaspora packaging, getting more
contributors by organizing debian events and mentoring new contributors.

[fsug-tvm] Problem in Android

2012-04-30 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Friends,

I am facing another problem in my Android phone now.

Finding that Got-to-do is a good task manager, I downloaded the apk file
from a site and installed it. Now, when I try to start the application,
it says that it was not obtained from Google Play, and then doesn't run.
I have earlier installed other apps from third sources and have had no
problem in running them. I don't understand why this alone is not
running. Does anyone here have a similar experience? Or any idea what
may be going wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, otherwise I would not have been able to install it! And I have
recently installed a few applications, like the Dolphin browser, Astro
File Manager and Handcent sms after downloading the apk file from third
parties, and they all work very well. My incentive for downloading from
other sources is that I can download them onto my computer and then
transfer them to my phone. That works out cheaper than downloading into

Thank you, anyway.

read the correspondence in an Android forum if there is one. But glad to
know that there are people here who are familiar with the system. It was
only a few months back that I got an Android phone, so I didn't have
much interest in it till recently.

Let me ask a question all the same. Today, after I completed a phone
call that came from abroad, I found that more than 200 rupees had been
cut from my balance. Thinking that they had started charging for
incoming calls, I called the Customer Service and they told me that I
had used the Internet to the extent of 19.5 MB, which caused the charge
because I didn't have a GPRS scheme. The thing is that I had not
consciously used the Internet for any purpose. I think the usage was
caused by background usage by applications such as Latitude or some
such. Now, I would like to know how I can prevent this. I also get
frequent messages saying the last call cost something like Re. 0.10 or
so, though the call time shows 0 minute. I think this also is due to
background downloads and is causing unnecessary wastage of money.

Thanks once again,

My System version says: Moto_version.34.3601.1.MB525.Retail.en.ME2

[fsug-tvm] users may lose Internet in July

2012-04-22 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Maybe good news for Free Software enthusiasts:

Over half a million users may lose Internet in July, including thousands
in India

Washington: For computer users, a few mouse clicks could mean the
difference between staying online and losing Internet connections this
summer.

Unknown to most of them, their problem began when international hackers
ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers
around the world. In a highly unusual response, the FBI set up a safety
net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet
disruptions for those infected users. But that system is to be shut
down.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by its security
partner, http://www.dcwg.org , that will inform them whether they're
infected and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected
users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

2012-04-14 Thread V. Sasi Kumar
Dear friends,

Now that Apple computers also are found to be susceptible to virus
attacks, GNU/Linux machines remain the only ones not affected yet. But
for how long? Considering that Mac OSX is based on BSD, how long will it
take for someone to write viruses for GNU/Linux? I am sure that when it
happens, it will create a big splash. But that itself should be
temptation enough for crackers to try that. Has anyone here understood
how the Apple virus overcame the security measures in-built in the OS?
Are our days of peace and security coming to an end?

All the best,
A somewhat worried GNU/Linux user.
