Dear Spiders All, I would like to thank all of you who replied to my requests for ressurance - too many of you to reply to individually, and also too many to name - poor Avital would be having conniptions if I tried to put all your names down in one eMil! However, the op. was done just over a week early, so that pleased me, and I am now gainin g speed on the Zimmer frame, and (bravely) attemptin to walk without the aid of the frame, so long as there are plenty of soft items to fall onto. When I tod the Doctor that, he was horrified, and said I mustn't even think of falling, so that has been put far out of my mind.. I did have one funny moment though - I went to the toilet during the night, walked (staggered) back, then couldn't understand why IU couldn't move my leg forward. After a few panicky moments, I realised that te Zimmer frame was squarely planted on the flip-flop I was wearing ... However, I am getting on well, but still at my Mum's - the two of us tottering about on frames have to be seen to be believed, and the Clash of the Titans is nothing compared to the traffic jams when she comes out of her bedroom, and I come out of mine, and we jam up the hallway - still, I am very glad it has been done, and things are looking up again. I don't know how we ever survived without your Thread books, Brenda. It was very hit or miss (as far as I was concerned!) before your threads books came out. I thank you constantly for them, as it is always handy and I usually need to substitute the suggested thread for a project to something I already have in my stash. I am learning Pag needlelace over the Internet - on the Needlelace Talk site. Great fun. And Arachne, and the Aussie Gumnuts sites are so helpful, too. I think the friendships made make the Internet so worthwhile. The scammers etc are a bother, but with care then the Internet is a wonderful invention! The internet, with all its technical advantages came at an opportune moment for lacemaking. We are relatively few, but mighty. Information is power, and information about lace is readily available in abundance on the internet, and increasing. And now distance teaching is being explored. And there are self-published books being produced, diminishing the out of print phenomenon, as well as saving out of copyright books on the internet for all to see and use. We can get pictures of lace for sale, or out of various collections, in our home, which can be so educational and inspiring. Museums are putting decent photos of their collections online for view, eliminating burdensome trips to the actual place. Lacemakers from around the globe are able to readily find each other and communicate ideas, questions, answers, photos, scans, opinions. All of this is making access to the world of lacemaking a global phenomenon to all who desire. It comes with thousands of hours of volunteer work, a willingness to try new things by people dedicated to the art of lacemaking. Lacemaking is not for everyone, but for those who have an interest, it is all there, and surely more will come as technology advances. Nothing will replace the needle and thread, the pillow and the bobbins, but even they are much more readily available, as well as the information on how to use them. For all who have made this phenomenon possible, I say, Thank You. [lace] thanks and good website
HI I wanted to thank all that responded to my question about learning patterns. Also I was searching the web and accidently found Jo Edkins site - it is amazing and has answered some of my questions. It gives me some initial dierctions that seem to be consistent in lace making. This is what I was looking for. (just like when you are cooking, you cream the butter and sugar and then put in the next required ingredient and then you put in the liquids etc- the process) As I mentioned before my mom crocheted and I would watch and copy her, but never asked questions so never knew that I was to add a stitch here and there, (was just suppose to know to do that) now I should learn how to read crochet patterns. I find when looking on the web it is hard to find info about bobbinlace. The same pages come up over and over. Every page tells about how to wind a bobbin, make a pricking, cloth stitch, but to get a little more involved is lacking - only my opinion as a new lacer. So I got discouraged and quit. Just thought I would send my comment only as a positive comment for those that are trying to make bobbinace more popular. Jo has discussed the pattern such as the shape and hints to where to start-this is where I got frustrated - if no directions I can't keep up with the discussions here or figure out a pattern to do. Just seeing a pricking means nothing to me. I passed up buying some old old prickings because I just didn't see the point when they looked like a bunch of dots. I am trying to express myself and it is hard to do in an email - maybe an example for the gals here, if I gave you a car engine and said now put it together, where would you start? I know mom was so use to crocheting she would forget to tell me some important little details of the process. thanks to all and hope my comments help to promote bobbon lace. I am going to look into joining IOL you know the what I mean, before I just didn't see the value. I am hoping to maybe borrow some vhs or dvds to help me in the learning process. I did find some of the lace books I bought - getting excited to start reading and practicing. I have at least 5 books, but won't list as this is really long - sorry but I am excited now. [lace] Thanks for the birthday greetings!
Thanks, dear spiders, for the birthday greetings. I've been trying to fend off a winter cold, so I'm rather quiet these days. Tomorrow night my husband gets back from the UK (he was supposed to be back tonight but a general strike this morning killed that plan) and it will be my Hebrew birthday (12 Heshvan). One of the great things about being Jewish is having two birthdays.Hey, any excuse for a party! ;-) My officemate, Masha, has the same Hebrew birthday. For the past two years we've been bringing in cakes and treats and inviting our coworkers to drop by for our 8-hour party. She's turning 30 and I get to be her age that day if anyone asks. ha-ha Best wishes, Avital -- Blog: http://apinnick.wordpress.com Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Thanks from LaceNews!
Laurie and all, Regarding the Australian Torchon Lace Machine: I have one of the US made/sold Torchon Lace Company pillows/machines, unfortunately minus the bobbins they were cut off leaving the pattern and lace pinned to the roller. It also includes the original booklet. The bobbins shown on the Australian pillow are not at all like those pictured in my booklet. The bobbins pictured are more like the 'Danish Beginner' bobbins we see today. Is there any documentation as to the 'straight shaft' bobbins shown here? I can see that these straight bobbins would be easier/cheaper to make, but it leaves me wondering. Well I didn't think that my innocent posting would result in such an avalanche of names. Alas, although I did make some bobbins for my youngest daughter from 3mm dowling using a Stanley knive, I wouldn't call myself a bobbin maker. Neither was Alan, his forte was to write on the social history of lacemakers, both in England and Ireland in the late C19th. My contribution has to do a little designing and write a few teaching booklets. May, I thank Jenny for compiling the list and I promise, one day to scan in some of the bobbins I have as examples. I figured Colgan went a similar route and designed her own alphabet. After all, lots of people have been designing letters; alphabets are always popular. The pieces are stunning. The techniques used are a bit different, there is a lot more in and out of pairs. Yes and yes and yes, on all counts. That why I love to drool over Sandi's book, but will never attempt even a single piece. Dear Arachnids Many thanks to all who took the time and trouble to send me suggestions for using a narrow edging. The church doll has taken my fancy for this particular chapter and my ideas are running and other ideas are being ear-marked for other chapters. I have a photo of the Church doll but I need to work out how to produce her from a square hankey. Another idea that has sparked ideas is for a dressed doll. I had already had the beginnings of the idea but was thinking along the lines of dolls house size but the suggestion is moving me towards a larger possibly Victorian child doll with all her underwear dress etc. I now have to find a suitable doll, and more importantly patterns for authentic Victorian clothes for her. Hello! Thanks to all who wrote to explain the lace-digest system. I didn't realize the consequences of my selections when I signed up. I must sort that out. Thanks for posting the link to the Gallician catalogue. WOW--I must take a few more lessons before I tackle those! I don't recall seeing the diagrams in the previous catalogues, so these are a big help/improvement. Lastly, what to do with all those stray lacey bits? I came to lace world from embroidery land. As a crazy quilter, there is no motif too small or poorly made (my work) that it can't have a re-purposed life on a block! But, small motifs also look good on those notecards with the window cut into the stock, sort of a gift with card momento. And I've stitched bits on felt for artist's trading cards as the front cover of a needle book. A small strip of the little pea became the trunk of a tree, with the plaited ends as branches. I embroidered some leaves, added mini buttons for buds did some silk ribbon embroidery for flowers/grass at the base. It's nice to have a supply of mini gifts for friends, roommates etc. or for various exchanges. Lace makes friends wherever it goes, so make sure yours does some traveling! I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who sent their sympathy on the recent deaths of my parents. We are beginning to sort through many years of memories, and trying to terms with the fact that they are not there any more - especially the how do I do... questions which they were always there to answer. Mom left two pieces of tatting in progress, a sideboard runner and a doily, the latter being worked with the commemorative shuttle I gave her for their diamond wedding last year. I think the doily is to a pattern in one of the Coats books, but the sideboard runner she had worked out for herself, so I will need to start counting her stitches to see where to go next! My eldest sister, Kate, has had Mom's copy of Angela's Romanian Point lace book, (I already have a copy) and was making a first attempt at the braid on the evening Dad died - fortunately that has not put her off, as she has now started asking me the how do I? questions :-). Might make a lacemaker of her yet - she couldn't take to bobbin lace as it grows too slowly, but she has embroidered, crocheted and knitted for years. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for the warm welcome and advice re my lace butterflies. For those that asked, I have made torchon and beds. lace and had a try at bucks point. I'm hoping to go to the National Lace Day at the NEC in Birmingham in early December and will see if I can pick up books and patterns there. Jane. Ely, Cambs UK Hi Jane, Welcome to Arachne. I see you can do Beds. Our own Arachne, Jean Leader, has written a little booklet called An Introduction to Bedfordshire Lace for The Lace Guild. It has a butterfly on the front and another inside with excellent instructions. I made the one on the cover and think it might be delicate looking enough for a wedding dress. Maybe you will see at the NEC, have a great time I know how overwhelming it can be as I have managed to get there twice. It might be available at the Lace Guild table if they have some to sell. Over here we can get it from our regular vendors. If you have any more questions I am sure there will be plenty of answers. I get the digested version of the emails so tend to be way behind on answering things. I was settling down to read 3 digests that arrived since last night but noticed that the third one was actually a repeat of the second one, I felt cheated! [lace] Thanks to you all
Hello Lacemakers All, I just want to take a moment to thank all of you who have eMailed me - it has been a traumatic time, especially as my sister Linda's death came so quickly after my Dad's stroke, but thankfully, although both he and Mum are absolutely devastated, Dad is making a good recovery from the stroke. Linda's funeral was on Wednesday, and today is her birthday, so we are all bearing close resemblances to watering-pots still! But - she had a most awful condition called Multiple System Atrophy, which is similar to MS - the neural systems close down, and she was already in a wheelchair, and unable to speak very well, so we are all thankful to God that she is now spared all the awful things which can end the lives of those suffering from MSA. She also saw the birth of her grand-daughter Connie, who is now 27 months, and Lottie, who is just eight weeks old - and her elder daughter's second baby is due at the end of June - although Linda won't see her in the flesh, I am sure she'll be looking after her when she arrives! Anyway - thank you again for all the messages - they have been a great comfort in this sad time. Thank you and God Bless, Carol - in Suffolk UK. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Because of all the kind notes of late, and because my name has come up in the digests I wanted to just say thank you to all who have sent love and prayers, and let you all know I am here and doing well. I had Breast Cancer but it was caught early and I am now recovering from Chemo and Radiation treatments. I hope to be painting again soon. My strength seems to be returning at about the same rate as my hair :-) Anyway thanks kind spiders for all the encouragement and I will hopefully be publishing a new catalog in the near future. [lace] Thanks Nora! (card exchange)
I have received a very sweet Christmas card and note from Nora. It is a scene of a house surrounded by snow! (I'm still hoping for a little of it myself) There is a beautiful star ornament enclosed and also a letter. She did a great job on it, and doesn't even read the language in which the instructions were written. Nora is all the way over on the west coast of Canada and I am here on the east coast of Florida. Yet we have a bunch in common! Thank you so much for your wonderful gift. It has made my Christmas richer already!! Hope you have a special Christmas and that your New Year finds your completed file larger than your wish file :) Somehow, I doubt that is possible for a lacemaker... Thanks again! Thank you to all those who answered my question about the elastic bans for my bobbin winder :) Isn't modern technology wonderful? :) Anyway, all the men in my family are into model making and one of their new magazines featured an exciting new product. I immediately saw it's worth for lacemaking :) Testors, the company that manufactures plastic paints, has come out with a kit for making your own decals using your computer :) Well, wouldn't that be handy for decorating bobbins? :) You could scan and use family photos, famous paintings, paint full size pictures you painted yourself and reduce them down..the possibilities are endless! The product is Testors Custom Decal Maker. It is quite inexpensive, around $9.99US and that includes the computer software you may need in addition to several hundred guy type designs and two sheets of decal paper. Thanks to all who have responded to my questions about buying and selling lace. I would, of course, be interested in any further comments along these lines, as well. One problem I have had with buying lace online is that it is really hard to see and assess what you're getting. I don't know if others have had this problem, since most of you can make what you want, to order! (Someday, I hope, I'll be among your number! ;) That's the main reason I'm here!) Anyway, to continue, I have bought some modern lace that looked right, from the photographs, but it turned out the photos had been enlarged to show the detail, and when I got the lace, it was considerably finer than I had expected or planned for. No return on that was allowed, since it was cut to my specifications. Another time, I bought some antique lace flounces that looked beautiful in the photograph, and the handwork was lovely once I received it, but the color of the fabric had faded to the point that it would not match the gown I was working on, and I didn't want to risk damaging it by trying to bleach it to match. Luckily, I was able to return that, since it was expensive (for my budget)! Still, it cost me $10 just to look. I saw the posts about the difficulties of accurately photographing lace, and I can believe it, based on my limited experience with internet lace buying! I am not interested in trying to match Walmart in costs, but to find beautiful lace for my sewing projects, until I can learn to make my own to supplement my supplies. I realize that making lace is a labor of love, like my sewing is, and there is no way to realize the value of the time invested. Like you all, I enjoy it, so to me, it is worthwhile. I wouldn't want to sell my work for a pittance either. On the other hand, if the cupboard gets bare enough, I might be happy to sell my work for what I deem to be a good price. That's the way it looks to yet another unemployed lawyer in the mirror! ;( Maybe there is no good solution to the lace buying/selling dilemma. At this point, our local suppliers are getting more and more into crafty things, and less and less into quality materials for sewing. Apparently sewing is a dying art, too. They do sell some beautiful laces, mainly bridal, for a fairly hefty price, but most of them are synthetic chemical laces, and not really what I like to work with. Oh well -- I do appreciate the input from you all. You've given me a lot of food for thought. I have learned so much already, since joining this list only a short while ago, and I am grateful for all of your postings, as I continue to learn from you all! Hi, Thanks to all of you for the advice about lacemaking with a not-quite-mended-enough wrist. If anyone was wondering, the consensus is that it will hurt for far longer than I expected and that making lace little and often is good, as is picking the bobbins up one by one to move them rather than working it all in my hands. I have been away from my computer or would have written sooner - many thanks to all of you who wrote to me onlist and off about economical lace pillows and books to begin with. I won't be able to start a project until after Christmas, but I am ordering a one and only pillow nad found one of the recommended books online at a great price - and I'm excited! You've all been most helpful! I first got interested in bobbin lace many years ago - in the 1970s, when I was sill in my teens. In addition to buying some bobbins, I got some linen thread at that time too. I know that some of it is 140/2, which, I believe, is not made anymore. Am I right in thinking that I should save that thread for when I know what I'm doing? And, if so, what is a good thread to begin with? Cotton, I'm guessing, but what size? Hi Sherri, Without knowing the book you have purchased, it is difficult to help. If you share the name of the book and it's author, someone is bound to have a copy and be able to let you know the appropriate threads to purchase in readiness. Even if the threads listed have been discontinued, alternative suggestions which are easy to obtain can be suggested too. [lace] Idrija lace thanks and another ?
Hi everyone, and to all who responded to my question about working Idrija lace - thank you so much. My next question is for those who do use a bolster for making these laces (particularly the patterns in the Cook/Tratnik book as those are the only ones I'm familiar with) - what size bolster? Mine is 20 inches around (circumference) by about 11 inches long - I suspect it should be bigger to give a broader work surface (the topmost part). I could wrap something around this one to make it bigger, or I could make a whole'nother bolster. My midlands bolster, in use, is 37 inches around, and about 14 inches long, maybe too bulky for Idrija (perfect for Bucks point however...). bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (west coast of Canada, where we had some thunder, rain, sunshine, wind, cloud, fog...but no snow (and that's good)) www.woodhavenbobbins.com - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to everyone for their replies to my question about Fantasy Flowers. (Also thanks to Sue B. for her generous remarks about my bobbins). ANYWAY 2 things, first I picked up a new magazine called Hallmark (yes it appears to be related to the card company) that is perhaps a cross between Martha Stewart Living, and Real Simple and on page 34 there is a how-to section on crafting your own windchimes, one of which is made with wood lace bobbins and empty wood thread spools dangling from wood embroidery hoops! Interesting in that one so rarely sees anything bobbin lace- related in general public magazines. Second, has anyone got a book called Clones Lace the Story and patterns of an Irish Crochet, by Maire Treanor? You can see it at www.irishbook.com. I am curious what anyone thinks of it. To all my Arachne friends whether touched by this new terror, or not I didn't contact our Spanish Arachnes, but I have thought of you - and also of those Spanish friends from pre BL days with whom I've lost touch. I'm also thinking now of all you US (and other) arachnes touched by 9-11. The Madrid craziness has, I'm sure, brought all the pain back to the fore front of our thoughts - when I was hoping that time had at least started its healing magic and dulled our pain a little. I hope we can all unite and say Don't let the angry ones defeat us. I firmly believe in tolerance and acceptance for all opinions, races, creeds, colours and so on. We live in a beautiful world and must strive to celebrate our differences. Wouldn't it be a dreadful life if we were all the same? Moving this to lace chat since that is where it belongs. I agree. The tape was invented by 3M. (a local Minnesota company at the time) A clue to why it is called Scotch tape is the tartan plaid in the packaging as well. It is a common term (or was) that if you made things stretch, and pinched every penny, you were Scotch of course the fact that it was an incorrect pronounciation of the word Scots didn't seem to deter anyone LOL. In fact, in Minnesota everyone calls a Scotsman a Scotchman. (I don't because we have Scots relatives and learned very young that was incorrect) They also call Italians, Etalians. Of course an Italian will tell you that they don't come from Etaly!!! If there is a Scotch Company (I always thought the original Scotch tape was made by 3M) it was named after the tape, not the tape after the company. The product is (or originally was) a long strip of cellophane to which a sticky substance was applied. When the company first started making it, the apparatus for applying the glue to the cellophane didn't always work perfectly. Sometimes you had cellophane sticky tape and sometimes you just had cellophane! One disgruntled customer wrote to the company, complaining about ...this Scotch tape of yours - the reference is that in his opinion, the company was trying to save on glue by not actually putting any on the tape. The company, however, took the reference and applied it to the notion that their sticky tape could be used to repair things, which meant you saved money, which was also referred by calling it Scotch Tape. The name stuck (pardon the pun) for other reasons than the ethnic reference: it's short, it's catchy, and eventually in North America, scotch tape became a generic reference to any sticky cellophane tape. Hi All, Thanks for the help with my needlelace pattern. I will reuse it until it falls apart G. I love the clear contact paper! I use brown paper bags for my Battenberg and make lots of ornaments. When they start shredding in some areas I put Magic tape (Scotch tape) on and it gets sticky : ( (Only when I can't find the original.) Now I will use a bit of Contact paper to cover the shreds! I like to write notes on my B'berg patterns so I will be sticking with paper bags. I'm forever testing the hand of bags to find the ones that are my preferred weight and have a surface that won't grab the needle. Re: [lace] Thanks for the answers
Dear Debbie, Some lacemakers take other crafts to do when away from home - but for those of us who just can't survive without our daily dose of lacemaking, there are smaller pillows, some of which fold up into the size and shape of an average-size handbag, which are called travel pillows. Most of these smaller pillows are only suitable for doing straight lengths of lace, rather than collars or squares etc., and the size of the working area, such as a roller, also limit the width of the piece which can be made on them, but its quite possible to work a piece of lace 2 or 3 inches wide on most of them. You might also see that some suppliers sell what are known as travel bobbins - they are smaller than usual, and made especially for use on the smaller travel pillows. My impression is that lace pillows/rolls are heavy and bulky. When you travel, what do you take along that is reasonable portable? Thanks again for enhancing my learning experience.
