RE: [LegacyUG] FW: unable to add repositories in research guidance

2008-06-10 Thread John D. Taylor III

Yes, I want to be able to attach ancestry.com or any other web address that
I find a book or books that were recommended by the research database that
dosen't have the location listed where I actually found the book.

You can add any repository you want. Go to View - Master List - Addresses -
Repository, or did you want to upload that into your reasearch guildance DB?

Subject: [LegacyUG] FW: unable to add repositories in research guidance

When using research guidance, i.e., preliminary survey,-local histories
there are many books that are recommended to research.  I have found that
more often than not some of these books give a reference to look in either
world cat, or family history Library... which means I have to order the book
through my local library in order to get the information,-that's fine, and I
appreciate the suggestion, which I will do if I can't find the information
on the Web.  Nevertheless, many times, I have found some of the books that
are referenced only to where I can order them, are located online at,
ancestry.com, heritage quest, Google books, and so forth. I realize that
there is no way legacy or anyone else can keep up with all the books that
are added on line and put them in the repositories as they become Available
on the web.  So, I looked for a way that I can enter the repository where I
found the book online so that I go to the online source where I found it the
last time if it comes up again while doing research on another person.

My question is, - is there some way that I can add my own repository to the
repositories already in the research guidance Center?  If not, is this
feature planned for the future?  If not, could you please include it.

Thanks
John

Re: [LegacyUG] new FamilySearch integration?

2008-06-10 Thread JD Liddil
Despite what the Legacy Manual says form M$ themselves;

System requirements for Live Search Maps
Live Search Maps in 2D mode requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 6,
Internet Explorer 7, or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.

->Virtual Earth 3D (Beta) requires the following:

Windows XP with SP2, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
Windows Imaging Component

->The 32-bit or 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6, Internet
Explorer 7, or Firefox 2.0

250 MB or more of hard disk space
A 1.0-gigahertz (GHz) processor (2.8 GHz or faster is recommended)
256 MB of system memory (1 GB is recommended)
A 32-MB video card (256 MB is recommended) that supports Microsoft
DirectX 9, with 3D hardware acceleration enabled
A high-speed or broadband Internet connection

2D maps work fine on my IE6 machine in the browser. I don't have
Legacy on this machine to test it directly. So if Legacy requires IE7
it is a Millenia thing as M$ says you can use IE6 even in the SDK
help.

RE: [LegacyUG] V7 Deluxe - Restore Multimedia Files - problem

2008-06-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Pauline,

Because of the long delays on LUG, I am replying direct and copying to LUG.

I guess the reason for the lack of response it that not many of us use the
multimedia back-up, preferring to back-up the image files etc. as normal.

If you follow the recommended procedure for installing Legacy 7 installing in
C:\Legacy or, if you do not use this default, in the same location as you have
Legacy 6 then you will not have a problem. In other words just as you would
with an update. All your data files should be unaffected and there is no need
to use restore.

To be extra safe you could put your back-up on a flash drive (I always have my
current one there anyhow) just in case - but you shouldn't need it

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Legacy Charting not found

2008-06-10 Thread JLB
Yes, I also have this issue. I believe the Standard version and Deluxe
versions are the same as far as installations go, the only difference
being that your customer number unlocks the deluxe features.
Re-installing did not help me in any case. Still got the same message.
The workaround is to go into the Legacy Charting folder (because it IS
installed regardless of what the message says) and make a shortcut to
the desktop.

I thought Mrs Mills was an authority - on the honky-tonk piano! But this one
must be from Yorkshire EE Bah Gum.

She obviously knew little about UK censuses as she apparently has templates
for both England and Wales - they were identical and part of the same
census. But I didn't see mention of Scotland, Ireland, Channel Islands etc.
How many Australian censuses have survived - I thought they were all
deliberately destroyed as part of privacy rules.

As you say - let's just leave our American friends to their (expensive)
book

With no disrespect to Mrs Mills, she is not regarded as an authority over
here. Nevertheless it will be interesting to see how she interprets our

as you suggested, tagging. I don't believe it's something you can do
from within Legacy Charting. Look up Focus groups in the help system,
and the introduction says:

Focus Groups

A Focus Group is a group built by selecting individuals, families,
ancestors and descendants. The contents of a Focus Group determine
who will be exported to a file or printed on a report. A Focus Group
can contain as few as one individual or the entire contents of the
Family File. An individual and all his/her ancestors can be added to
the group with a single selection.

The Focus Group window can be reached from several locations.

1. From the Export window, click Record Selection, choose the Selected
Records Contained in the Focus Group option, and then click View / Set
Focus Group.

2. From the Select a Report window when either the Individual or
Family tab is selected. Click the Record Selection button, choose the
Focus Group Records option and then click Edit.

3. Choose Focus Group from the View menu.

4. From the Miscellaneous Searches tab of the Search window, choose
the Focus Group option and then click View / Set Focus Group.

Hope this helps.

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

2008-06-10 Thread Dermot McGlone
John,

According to other posts here from those who may know about such
things (Ron Ferguson, for e.g.) the book is pretty-much US-centric.

You can however purchase it (if you wish) from the legacy family tree
store (http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/?Click=1440), click the
"Software and Books" link in the menu on the left of screen, and the
first option on screen is to "Evidence Explained: Citing History
Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace". It costs USD71.95 including
shipping (or postage and packing as we say!) That is approx EUR46 or
GBP36.40).

There may be others on the list who will tell you more about whether
or not it is of much use for non-US sources, as I'm not necessarily
the best sourcer! The source writer on deluxe version of Legacy v7,
however, will help create these sources to this standard if you
require that, or you can ignore the source writer, and override with
your own preferred options, if you like.

Dermot.

[LegacyUG] Printing Sources in a Family Group Report

2008-06-10 Thread Claire Spinelli
I must be doing something wrong. I tried adding a few new sources using the
Source Writer. When I previewed a family group report, the sources showed as
a "subsequent citation" rather than a footnote. For example: I added a
newspaper item I found online. The only thing showing in the sources is the
title of the article - not even the name of the newspaper. I subsequently
tried previewing a descendant narrative report and it showed up correctly
there. Also, the citations I added using an "old" master source with new
source detail also showed up correctly.

Any advice?

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7 set relationships

2008-06-10 Thread Robert57P via Gmail
If I had to guess, I'd think it might be because they expanded relationships to
include non-blood (i.e.: in-laws), so it takes a bit longer (and thus they may
have turned off the auto-calculate to speed things up). If that's the case
though, I'd like to see them add it as an option (dynamically update
relationships Y/N).

On a couple related notes:
* Didn't Legacy used to have a chart showing relationships? I can't find it
now.
* Wouldn't my wife's grandfather be my grandfather-in-law? (me = Bob, wife =
Linda, Wife's Grandpa = William)
* If I put me in the left window of the relationship calculator and him in
the right, the top line says "not related", next box says not related, but in
the Descriptive Link box it says: William is Bob's wife's grandfather.
* If I swap us (him on left, me on right), the top line says "husband of
granddaughter", next box lists him and "husband of granddaughter" and a couple
lines of NOT RELATED. And there is no descriptive link.

  Hi -

Not sure if this is a bug or not. In version 6 of Legacy, when you added an
individual and had set relationships with yourself as the primary person, the
relationship showed up immediately on the new person you added. Now, in
version 7 it seems, you must re-calculate and set relationships all over again
to find out the relationship of a newly added relative. Of course you can
always use the relationship tool and find it out that way, but I miss having
the instant relationship shown whenever I add someone new.

Is this going to be a permanent thing in version 7, or is it a bug? I know
Millennia is busy with fulfilling orders, so I'm not terribly worried about
this, but I just wanted to write about it while I was thinking about it.

Thanks
John

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy Colours

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy

Hi Shirl,

The colours in Legacy apply to the whole program rather than a Family
File. I'm assuming by "family Trees" you mean separate files? If so
and you are getting confused, perhaps it's time to consider putting
them all in one file though here are other suggestions. (If you mean
different lines within the one file, then turn on the Ancestor
colours in Options > Customise and then use Tools > Apply Ancestor Colours.)

You could save several colour schemes and then change to the relevant
colour scheme when you were working on a particular Family File if
that would help. If you've saved a Colour Scheme you can swap schemes
very quickly by right clicking on a background bit and choosing
Change Colour Scheme and picking the relevant name from the list.

That, of course, is a workaround. You might put in a Suggestion from
the Home Tab that colours be Family File specific.

I only have two family files that I generally use - my real family
file and my test file. In my test file I have a copy of the Sample
file supplemented with parts of my family tree that I'm really
familiar with as it's easier to see what is happening with familiar
data. It became important to be able to see immediately that I was in
my test file rather than real file. So I changed the main surnames -
like FOOTE to LEGGE :-) , CLARK to SCOTLAND because they came from there etc.

Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] No email with instructions

2008-06-10 Thread ronald ferguson

Hi Linda,

Now that is getting to be a long time, but I am sure that you will have read
Ken's comments on LUG and and in the Legacy Newsletter explaining the
situation. One thing is for sure LUG is unable to help in these matters and the
only recourse is to contact Sales.

BTW the comment in my email was not really directed at yourself, but many were
complaining about a delay of a very few hours.

I take it that you know the delux code is downloaded in the standard and all
that is needed is your key to unlock the delux bit ie. if you download the
standard you will not have to download again.

I'd give it another day and then check with sales.

Good luck

However, I think the big problem at the moment is that items can take

What I don't like about using the word "Un-named" is that it suggests
the person was not given a name. They most likely were if they lived

Legacy is intelligent enough to handle it when you print reports.

[LegacyUG] Version 7 - Small problem in editing locations for people from master locations

2008-06-10 Thread Scott Failmezger
Editing locations is great in Version 7!!! It is also great to directly edit
the location on the family view if needed. The only problem is that if you need
to edit the marriage location your out of luck. You have to exit out and look
up the name and then edit the marriage.

Now if there's a way to get to the marriage information from a persons family
view I'd love to know how. Otherwise, this needs to get corrected in the future.

Thanks,
Scott Failmezger

RE: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

2008-06-10 Thread music-line
For those interested, the online version of 'Evidence Explained' can be
bought at http://www.footnote.com/evidenceexplained.php for $24.95 (half the
price of the hard back copy).

I have to say I would not normally put a link like this on the Legacy user
group, but as Legacy seems to have designed aspects of Version 7 around the
Elizabeth Shown Mills method (from what I have heard people say), I feel
justified in posting this link.

Best wishes

there is a

US$24 which
is a lot cheaper than having to pay US$50 for the paper copy plus shipping

[LegacyUG] a few problems in Legacy 7

2008-06-10 Thread Ron Taylor

Some problems have been mentioned. Sorry if these are repeated.

1) Relationship calculator still not working very well.
  a) One set of relationships can differ after swapping left and right with
the same two individuals.
  b) Very slow compared with verion 6 probably because so many additional
combinations are being examined
  c) Relationships are no longer automatically calculated as individuals
are added to the database.

2) Options>customize>data format>word for blank records>just leave it blank
is now showing "unknown" instead of blank.

3) Right click on "open source clipboard" triangle no longer allows
selection from 10 most used choices.

Some things have obviously been changed but some of the features of prior
versions may have been left out by mistake. It would be good if the
programmers would comment on features that have been removed or altered with
explanation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Address Note in GEDCOM

2008-06-10 Thread Brian/Support

Jim,

The problem you reported has been tested and is confirmed as a bug. A
report has been recorded in our problem tracking system so this can be
fixed.

The error also causes Legacy to incorrectly import the data. The Burial
Address note gets lost and the Burial Note becomes a note for the Address.

Both of these errors are included in the report.

You are correct, it is getting ridiculous. A quick check shows the following messages from you to

6/5/08 - [LegacyUG] Whats New in Legacy Video
6/6/08 - Re: [LegacyUG] v7

6/7/08 - Re: [LegacyUG] Ver 7 mapping and push pins

Obviously the messages are going through the list and out to the subscribers. This means Millenia's
mail server is doing its job. That leaves something on your end not working correctly. Check your
junk folder and your ISP. It's not Millenia's fault.

[LegacyUG] devising search strings

For the uninitiated Americans and Brits in our midst, Automated

With a nicely devised search string a researcher could get happily

Remember that your own msgs often do NOT come back to you. At least in part
this depends on what e-mail server YOU are using. For instance, I use
Google mail - and a msg I send to the board does NOT come back to me (even
if I copy myself!). But I can check the Legacy archives later and see that
it got posted. (When looking to verify a msg, I find it easier to sort the
archives by date rather than by the default.)

In creating an Ancestor Book Report in V6, the primary individual, in each
generation (i.e. primary, primary's father, primary's grandfather) are
completely listed with birthdate, marriage and death.

But in V7, the primary individual is listed only by name, in every
generation past the first - no birth, marriage or death information.

I can reproduce this with any Ancestor Book Report I do in V7. Have I
missed something or is this a possible bug in an otherwise great program.

Re: [LegacyUG] I just joined the group again

2008-06-10 Thread gtempleman1
If you bought version 6 after the specified date (I think it was June or July
of last year) then the update is free. In essence those people were actually
buying version 7, but allowed to use version 6 in the interim since v. 7 wasn't
quite ready. Millenia *thought* the programming would be completed well before
now. Many companies offer a free or reduced cost upgrade when the existing
product is nearing the end of its life and the next release is imminent. Rarely
is a free upgrade available for all existing users.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Output Bug (was "Sources")

2008-06-10 Thread Belinda
Just wanted to let you know that I think this is a bug... as I have
experienced something similar...

Had created a new source and added in some comments (can't remember whether
it was on the source or the source details section) when I created another
source the comments that I had added for the previous source kept appearing
in the source output (and a couple others that I had made after the first
one)as well even though I hadn't put them there. I know that I have not
combined them accidentally and I don’t think that you have either. I made a
narrative report which included both sources and they were listed correctly
there. When I went back to the source tab the issue seemed to have resolved
itself. So I thought I would keep an eye on it and see if it was a regular
bug or just one that appeared once (my hope) and then went away. The fact
that someone else is experiencing something similar would seem to suggest
some sort of bug. I'm sorry I can't help with a solution only confirmation
that it is happening to others.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Sources

Something weird has happened when I try to cite a source.  As I was
inputting a Master Source for a birth index this morning, I think I
inadvertently touched the Combine Highlighted Source with Another in the
List.  (don’t ask me how that happened) Now this person’s source information
for the birth index appears on the Assigned sources output tab area in
several of other family member’s screens when I point to not only the Master
Source birth index I entered,  but also other Master Sources also.   When I
try to edit source, the actual source edit area is correct, and doesn’t
include the birth index of my initial input.    Anyone know how to fix
this?    IE:...now on Master Source List, pointing to Texas Birth Index, it
says after clicking the output tab, the name, birth date, vol number, cert #
of my initial family member input this morning (who is from Kentucky and was
never in Texas)  It also has the correct information re: Texas source also.
Thank you.

2008-06-10 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
When getting downloads of books, I always get the front page, which gives the
author or group, NO BOOK has no author. It is an online photocopy of the book,
so IMHO I would call it book, the repository is the website. I have not bought
EE yet either.

I am no means an expert and have not read the ESM books on Sourcing, but
I have poked about a bit in the Source Writer and this is my suggestion.

For the type of Source choose "Books", under Authored or Edited select
Book, Authored (reprint), for Author select "Author known" and for
Medium select "Online Book."

The next screen (step 2) gives you the opportunities to enter all the
details of the book plus the name and URL of the website, the date it
was published on the Internet (if known) and although the Format field
is pre-filled with "Digital images" you can change this to
"Transcription."

I would be very interested to have the comments of other LUGgers on this
solution and/or to read other suggestions.

[LegacyUG] Date/Time Stamp of Forum Messages

2008-06-10 Thread John Barranco
Recently I have noticed that the messages I received from the Legacy Forum
arrive at various times and not in the order that they were sent. I just
received a messages (June 8th @ 10:00) that was originally sent by the user on
Sunday, June 7th @ 7:31 p.m. Why are the messages taking so long to be
distribute? I subscribe to various other forums and their messages all arrive
in a timely fashion, usually within minutes after being sent by the originator.
I sent a message last night at 5:30 p.m. and have yet to have seen it appear in
my Legacy Forum folder. Am I the only one having this problem of receiving
messages in a timely manner from Legacy or are there others users experiencing
the same problem(s)?

Just as a curiosity, What if the "Unknowns" were entered like "Boy Smith" or

I have been trawling the web for the book Evidence Explained by Elizabeth Shown

You can get it through Amazon.co.uk. It is actually cheaper (although

Dede, since cemeteries and churches, etc. are used by more than one person,
generally, it doesn't add tremendously to the Master Location list (although
I do have 1401 locations, so maybe it does). So then you can place the pin
for that cemetery and church more specifically. I wouldn't do residences,
but that is a personal preference.

I haven't viewed the training CDs yet, but I have looked at the TOC of
each. I don't see anything that specifically covers:
 IMPORT

 IntelliShare
 GEDCOM

I would think all of these would be related and would deserve their

there was a section on GEDCOMS in the BEGINNERs lesson - though I
don't

[LegacyUG] Charting Puzzle

2008-06-10 Thread James Bruckman
Try this puzzler:

I know how you all love to solve these conundrums.

I want to create a descendant chart with only the direct line individuals.
That is Mother and Father and direct line child; and then that child as
Mother and Father, and so on. I would like to include just birth and death
date for each individual.

I am thinking I need to separate the desired individuals out first within
Legacy, maybe by tagging, and then produce the chart. I do not think there
is a way to do what I want within the Charting tool.

I am using version 7 for both.

Any ideas? I have been working on this for some time without success.

Jim

I too would prefer that type of list, or rather, a 'normal' board where one
can scan the headings and read only what is of interest.

Would it be possible to set up a special email list limited to those of us
whom have specific questions about using Legacy? Not to complain, but many
of us do not have the time to read a large volume of emails from people who
have complaints about the service or just want to chat. I could further
explain my question but then I would only be adding to the problem.

Kirsten,

With no disrespect to Mrs Mills, she is not regarded as an authority over here.
Nevertheless it will be interesting to see how she interprets our

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Little Capitalisation bug

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy

Hi Jenny,

This isn't a bug - it's the way you entered it on the Entry screens -
the Individual screen and the Edit tab in the Name List.

How else would you know how the surname is actually entered?
There is no possibility for confusion on these screens as the Surname
is in a Surname box.

I have changed to entering all my surnames in lowercase with leading

RE: [LegacyUG] Non-US Censuses in v7

2008-06-10 Thread Janis Gilmore
As in any "pocket" of life, genealogy has a culture and a vocabulary. You
may not like the Mills sourcing, and certainly have no requirement to use
it.

Having said that, I think you may be leading others astray when you
trivialize it. It is, at present, the industry standard, in the U.S. at
least. I think that we can only benefit from a study of her work, even if we
ultimately choose not to embrace it.

Additionally, I do believe that Legacy's inclusion of Mills' sourcing in the
new version will only serve to expand their market, and make it more likely
for all of us that Legacy will prosper and continue to provide a good
product.

I am presently at IGHR, where Elizabeth Shown Mills is lecturing, although I
am not in her lecture track. As a humorous note - she looks a bit like a
goddess - slim, well-coiffed, and very well-dressed! No grapes or fig
leaves. :-)

[LegacyUG] Post Fix titles not having their case honoured

2008-06-10 Thread Phil Warn

Dear all,

In my tree I have several Knights and peers of the realm.

One, Sir Rowland Hill KCB FRS is having his post
fix titles reduced to Kcb Frs which is surely an import buglet?

I do not expect the field to be modified in any
way as it can also be in mixed case as in BSc for
a bachelor of science, for example.

So, to recap, the GEDCOM file has the suffix as
KCB FRS, Legacy 7 is showing the field as Kcb Frs incorrectly.

Thank you

RE: [LegacyUG] How do people record addresses in an 'Event'?

2008-06-10 Thread ronald ferguson

David,

As I have said before, if I was you I would forget all about geolocations for
UK addresses they do not work properly. I only use geolocations to find a
location if I am not sure of it.

I put the full address, for the time it was recorded (eg 1851 census would be
at 1851) in the location field; thus, my locations comprise:

House & street, hamlet, village, district, town/city, county, country (the
latter being England, Scotland etc.) more specificlly which ever of these is
known.

Not only does this appear correctly in reports and web pages but gives the best
result with the mapping function - in particular including the street gives a
high success rate with the mapping - whether your option 3 would do the latter
I do not know and your best bet is to try it.

The mapping function has problems finding a location of Town, County. Country.

I have the original of a card that has on the front:
International Certificate of Inoculation and Vaccination as approved by

the traveler's name, address, DOB typed in and the traveler's signature.
Below this is Federal Security Agency U.S. Public Health Service For sale by

D. C. - Price $1.25 per 100 copies. Below this is PHS-731 (IHR) Rev. 12-48
On the back is area for the physician to write in the nature of the vaccine,

date, dose, physician's signature. This has the entries in handwriting.

I did not find what to use in the SourceWriter. I looked at Evidence
Explained and did not see what might fit. I looked at Passports p. 619 and
Chapter 3 Archives & Artifacts.

Another problem is EE has very little for when you have the original
document. I would appreciate ideas on how to source when you have the
original document. I used SourceWriter for a letter and it enters privately
held by the person the letter was written to. That person is deceased and I
have the original. I used the override to change to privately held and my
name.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Mapping

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy

Hi Leo,

Some of your problems are yours and nothing to do with Legacy
Mapping. If you have to sort out hospitals that have moved that's
your data entry problem - they always did have different locations/addresses.

Re correcting locations on the Map.
It has been said often now and will no doubt have to be said a lot
more times - you can't change the position of the Pin when you are
looking at the map for an individual. You need to use the Resolve
button and go to the Master Location List.

If the place has been mis auto coded, then click the Geo code button
and choose the option to not auto-code this location. That removes
the coordinates.
Then find the place on the map and right click where you want the pin
and accept that. Done

I agree that the Auto-code options are dangerous and not very
helpful. If you do autocode, you need to go right through the Master
Location list and verify every one.
It's a VE problem far more than a Legacy problem. VE does not
recognise historical place names and doesn't always find current
places. I'm afraid I'm old enough to be impressed that it finds any
automatically and when it fails, I don't find it irksome to find the
place myself. If I know where it is, it takes moments, if I don't, I
get to learn something new.

Cathy

At 12:02 AM 8/06/2008, you wrote:

I have installed the new Legacy 7.0.0.45 and have tried using the
new mapping feature, this may become a very usefull tool in the
future when some of the kinks get worked out.
I live on the western end of Prince Edward Island, Canada and have a
large portion of the people in my data base that live on P.E.I.
I have tried the mapping feature a few times with some of my
immediate family members, I do like the idea of being able to see
where each event in a families past has occured. I find, however, to
achieve this will require a great deal of work on my part by
entering the proper coordinates. I do have a lot of the correct
coordinates entered, but some will requier some modifications.

I have found several problems with the new mapping feature;
1. When I select a married family member and click the mapping
button it will automatically add a Geo-code to places that had no
coordinates listed. This would be great if it entered the proper
coordinates. I have noticed that some of my local areas in western
P.E.I. are now appearing in Calgary, Alberta; Elmsdale, Nova Scotia;
as well as in Newfoundland, Canada. If I do not correct the
coordinates immediately then I will find places like the Maplewood
manor, Alberton, Lot 4, Prince County, P.E.I, Canada is now located
in Glengarry, Calgary, Alberta, Canada right in the middle of a busy
highway, I now feel sorry for the poor seniors who live in that
building. For the locations that do not have any coordinates listed
the program should show where the new location is on the map and ask
if you want accept it, modify it or reject it before it changes the
coordinates.
2. In order to change where a Pin is located you have to change the
coordinates. Someone on the list suggested that if you right click
on the correct location and then you can change the pin location,
this does not work. I find that now when one of the pins has been
place in the wrong place it is very time consuming trying to move it
back to the correct location by clicking: resolve>edit>enter
Lat/Long>Save>Close>the new map is zoomed out>zoom in>realign the
pin>zoom in. The final result may be still not in the correct
location and then you have to repear this process several more times
to reach the correct location. It would be a nice feature to be able
to click on a pin and drag it to the correct location.
3. I have a lot of people listed in my program who were born in the
Prince County Hospital, Summerside, Lot 17, Prince County, P.E.I,
Canada, this is how I have them entered, the mapping program has now
entered the incorrect coordinates for the hospital and I now have to
set the correct coordinates to match where it is located, my problem
now is that over the history of Summerside there has been at least
three buildings called the Prince County Hospital and each has been
in three different locations. I will now have to enter three
different addresses, one for each hospital using three different
coordinates. Next I fill have to do a search for everyone who has
had an event (birth, death, etc.) that occured in the Prince County
Hospital, check the date it occured and then assign the correct
hospital to the event. With a data base of nearly 60,000 people this
may be very time consuming. I also have the same problem with the
O'Leary Community Hospital, two different buildings, two different
locations, both with the same name.

I now have my work cut out for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template Conversion Tool

2008-06-10 Thread JLB
I don't know if this is what you're looking for: If you have the new
Source Writer system turned on, and you open a Master Source from either
the Master Source List or an Assigned Sources window you can then click
the Add a new source button and it will bring up the Source Writer
window. If you make that window smaller it will be on top of the Master
Source Window so you can see both at the same time and work from one to
the other. After conversion, the old can be merged into the new. I
haven't worked with this alot yet, but the other day I was having a try
at what it would take to manually convert my old sources. Alot of work
it looks like and I gave it up because there were too many new boxes and
decisions to make. So, later.

One at a time. Start a new source so there's a small box on top of
your main screen for that and you can still see the old source. Then
either re-type or copy and paste one section at a time from the old
fields to the new ones. Repeat x-hundred times. See you in about 5
years.

I am sure I am being incredibly dense, but I can't locate the Source

I have the SourceWriter System switched on in Customise.

[LegacyUG] Ver 7 source detail on reports

2008-06-10 Thread Dede Holden
I first asked this question on Saturday and had no response. Maybe my
question was too long. I do know that the Legacy server is swamped
and many things have been held up so I've waited this long to repost.
(It's Tuesday morning.) I'll try to rephrase briefly.

On Reports, I'd like for the Master Source Text/Comments to be shown
the first time a source is cited only. I have that option checked.
I want the Source Detail to print, also.

But I'm getting the Master Source Text/Comments every time the source
is cited and the Source Detail from the first citation only on the
first citation. When the Source Detail changes with subsequent
citations of the source, the Detail does not appear on the report,
even when it is the first time this detail has been cited.

Since there are several places that this option can be turned on or
off, I don't know if :

1) I've missed something
2) I've misunderstood the purpose of the option
3) This is a bug

I have been testing this on Family Group Reports.

The message describing a problem with V7 Deluxe not restoring multimedia
backup was posted by KathyB over 48 hours ago, but I have not yet seen
anyone address the problem.
This is scary. Is this a known bug? Has anyone looked at her message

I have had the capability to download v7 for five days, but I am waiting

JL,

Whilst I prefer to use a blank, using "Unknown" does not cause a problem in
reports, it treats it as in Version 6. It is simply that the Potential Problem

Re: [LegacyUG] Email list for legacy solutions only?

2008-06-10 Thread John Carter
One possible solution to the mailing list versus online forum debate is a
Yahoo forum, which offers most of the options that have been asked for.

You can choose to get the postings in 3 different ways:
- individual emails (just as the current list)
- daily digest (something that has been requested)
- web only (with the option of getting forum admin emails, such as "will
be down for maintenance")
In the online forum, the messages are threaded by topic.

The downsides are the ads that are displayed when reading online (but
that's the price of a free forum) and not having notification of replies
to a message. (I don't know how good/bad the email options are, as I have
never used them.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy

The quickest way to recover from something like this is to restore your backup.
If you don't have one from when you started doing this sourcing, then
this is a reminder to make more frequent backups, especially when
trying new features.

The slower way if you don't have a backup is to show list for the
affected Source(s) and slowly work through the people one by one
reconstructing and re-entering the other source and deleting this mixed up one.

Re: [LegacyUG] V 7 Ancestor Book Report Problem

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy

Hi Judy,

Are you using 7.0.0.45?
I can't reproduce it here but you could be right as there are so many
options and changing an option or two can trigger different problems.
Some weeks ago there was a problem with missing marriages in one of
the reports, I can't recall which, but that was fixed.

Try the report with the default settings.
If you still have the problem, try deleting the ances.usr file and
setting your options again.

I can reproduce this with any Ancestor Book Report I do in V7. Have

Re: [LegacyUG] Email list for legacy solutions only?

2008-06-10 Thread Cathy
If there ever is a forum for Legacy, hopefully it will be set up like
the Rootsweb ones and gatewayed to a mailing list so you never have
to go to it.
However, in my experience of Rootsweb, messages gatewayed from the
Boards are generally from beginners and almost impossible to respond
to except to ask for clarification of their problem or request.

Message Boards are so much more time consuming. Perhaps my
perspective was set when I was on dial up. Message Boards are so slow
to use compared to email. However, I still am usually frustrated by
trying to find stuff on Message Boards to the point I give up.

With a mailing list you can sort very quickly in so many different
ways - certainly necessary at the moment with the mail delays.

Cheers,
Cathy

There are many of us who loathe using an on line support forum. I
prefer to read messages via email rather that waste my time logging on
to a forum to see if there are any message that I have absolutely no
interest in.

What you are asking for is a support forum with threaded subjects, something
that many other companies with products and services have already set up.
For example, there could be specific categories for sources, one for bug
reports, one for installation problems, one for charting, etc. In addition,
such forums tend to eliminate the users receiving copies of each and every
message posted, including those messages to which the user has no interest.
Many forums allow the user to specify something along the lines of notify
me of all responses to this message which means they would receive an
e-mail notification about the message subject to which they have expressed
an interest. On the downside, what the user may miss is a new subject opened
to which they may have a great interest but have no knowledge that it was
ever posted. This requires the user to visit the forum web site to check for
new subject matter being posted. Why Millenia has not gone this route is a
mystery to many of us as it would eliminate the constantly repeating message
of plain text only , etc. Maybe we ll see it sometime in the future.

I would think the easiest is to
- Search for all entries added or modified after yesterday
- Restore your backup to a new file
- then copy/merge or just retype your "today's work" into the restored file

Re: [LegacyUG] More With Sources

I've been trying to get this additional info. to print also and have had no
luck. I have gone through customize, options, reports, etc.. and have
ticked "to include" just about everything in my reports (I like everything
to print!) and still I am missing information on my reports. I have
compared sources created on the old basic source system, to the same source
created on the new source writer, and I find I like the way the basic source
system looks on reports better. I am thinking of sticking to the old tried
and true, unless I am doing something wrong for additional info. not to
print.

I'm having trouble getting Source Writer entered cites to print according
to my preferences on the reports.

For instance, for the family group sheet, under "sources," if I have the
boxes checked to print the repository, recorded date, and file ID, these
things print for the non-Source Writer cites, but anything created with
Source Writer doesn't print this additional information.

This free upgrade to version 7 only applied if you purchased version 6
during a specific time window (I think it was mid-June of last year until
late May of this year??)

If you purchased version 6 during this time and haven't rcvd anything, I
suggest you call Millennia. Note that last we heard, they were still
working on getting all of the notices sent out for the downloaders, but I
believe they've completed sending out all the pre-paid CDs. The download
e-mail notices took longer than planned because they had to send them out
individually. (If you purchased the download version, make sure you check
your SPAM/JUNK e-mail folders before you call them.)

I've read _Evidence Explained_ and don't think it's all that US-centric.
There are census formats for Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany,

of each of these countries (i.e. "Australia, records of") as well as Israel
and Ireland and possibly others although I didn't do an exhaustive search.
Source citations for things like Family Bibles, correspondence, heirlooms,

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: [LegacyUserGroup] (No Subject)

2008-06-10 Thread Robert57P via Gmail

Someone once explained it to me this way:
You want to document the actual "end product" (or "beginning product" -
depends on your viewpoint!) as the source.

Just because you happen to find it on the web or in a database is immaterial
to the "end product" itself. That would be like finding book "A" at the
local town library and again finding the same book at the big-city library.
The Library (ie: the internet, the database) is not the source - the book
is. The Library (or internet site or database) is the repository (ie: where
you found the book or where you found the section of the book). So the
repository is "where you read it", the book (or original book if it is a
"snippet") is the source.

If the publisher's colophon is intact and you know who the original
publisher, author, where the book was published, and all other information
relevant to the source I would enter it just as you would source the
book... then enter the website as the repository.

I also would strongly suggest using Adobe PDF (Full version) to create a
PDF of the website to store (since they have a habit of going down) or
creating a web archive (MHT) file with internet explorer to preserve the
website for your use only not to be distributed. I have accessed some
wonderful sites in the past that are no more. Also... websites that
disappear over time can also be accessed from http://www.archive.org which
is also known as the internet way-back machine.

To me there's nothing so frustrating when I am grading papers as not being
able to find the "root" source... in this case the book is the "root"
source the website is nothing more than a repository like the library.

BUT - based on your e-mail I sorted my list by the sender and looked for

'course it is possible the server is resending them and somehow replacing

be really weird.

Maybe its just 'cause the list is so active and so many msgs are being

RE: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

2008-06-10 Thread Dave

May I ask what this has to do with the use of Legacy and its add-on's?
The volume of messages on this list is already in overload!

Subject: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

Hello Listers

I have been trawling the web for the book Evidence Explained by Elizabeth
Shown Mills and can find it only on USA based websites.

Does that mean that UK bookshops do not think it will sell as it is to USA
centric
Has any UK lister read the book and is it worth getting
