Re: [LegacyUG] TMG looking for new home Legacy vs RootsMagic 7

2014-12-01 Thread Barbara Levergood
Thanks, Cheryl, for not staying out of it :). A lot of us TMG users are
trying to figure out how we can do things in our new software. This is
very hard sometimes because we are not nearly as familiar with the new
software, because it is often hard to think outside of the TMG box,
and because we have such long lists of workarounds we are trying to
find. So, any feasible ideas are welcome! They may not work for all, but
they may work for some.

For those who do not knot their undies easily ... I experimented with
putting the number or letter in parens, say (11), after any real suffix.
The parens would distinguish the code from any true Prefix or Suffix
that I have and from the RINs (displayed as [11]) and user IDs
(displayed as {11}). Another nice thing about the prefix/suffix solution
is that those fields are searchable. So, I could search for all persons
coded (11) or for all persons coded at all ((). This is not a
replacement for more tags (which can be set via Advanced Tagging), but
it might be a feasible workaround for some.

Another possibility would be to treat the Legacy Tags as one would a
9-bit binary number. However, to distinguish 10 lines, you would need
to use only 4 Tags. Where T is tagged and u is untagged:
Tags - 1234
Line 1 - uuuT
Line 2 - uuTu
Line 3 - uuTT
Line 4 - uTuu
Line 5 - uTuT
Line 6 - uTTu
Line 7 - uTTT
Line 8 - Tuuu
Line 9 - TuuT
Line 10 - TuTu

This would have the advantage that one would learn to count to 10 in
binary very quickly.

After following the thread here, sounds to me as if you
don't really need *colors*, all you really need is a way to
distinguish the 23 John Smith or Benedict Beek one from the
 other.

In the name fields, Legacy has both a prefix and a suffix,
both of which will display in the Name List as well as the
family-view and pedigree view. Pick one of 'em, and assign
your color-lines a number -- me, I'd assign the line with
the most people the #1; but you could assign Amber as #1 and
Yellow as #25; or your own line as #1, etc. The
possibilities probably rival those 256 million colors 90% of
 the population can't distinguish anyway.

If this knots up your undies, no need to say so, you can
just ignore me. Lots of people *DO*.

 Dawn,

I've migrated from TMG to Legacy over the past few months. I
looked at the same programs that you have, but chose Legacy
as my main program. At first the lack of flags (Legacy calls
these tagging) and the lack of accent colors bothered me.
While improved tagging would be great, I no longer miss the
 accent colors.

The free version of Legacy has only 3 tags, but the full
version has nine. Mine were assigned very quickly and I want
 more, more, more.

IMO TMG users considering Legacy should buy the full
program. That's the only way that you'll see all of Legacy's
 functions and options.

Simple. There would be two marriages. The first to the father of the child
and
he might be unknown.

So step one is to add the woman.
Step two add the child and link it to the mother. This will create the first
'marriage' to an Unknown man.
Step 3, add the husband to the mother, creating the second relationship.
Lastly, set the child relationship to this second man as step-

Remember. In Legacy Marriages do not necessarily involve a wedding. They're
just
relationships.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to put gathered information?

2014-11-21 Thread Barbara Shroyer
You could create a new Legacy file or files for these items. I'm migrating
into Legacy from TMG. I have a couple of files there for these purposes. This
makes the information readily available, but doesn't clutter up my main file.
The system will work just as well in Legacy.
I store all my media in folder, actually folder tree, in Documents. This
makes it easily assessable for several purposes; Legacy being only one of those
purposes.

[LegacyUG] navigating to associates

2014-09-21 Thread Barbara Levergood
I am a TMG user with a newbie question. I am trying to figure out how to
navigate among individuals in a database in Legacy 8.

Say I have an individual Census event that is shared with the members of
the household (wife, children, unrelated housekeeper). Can I directly
navigate from the owner of that Census event to the housekeeper or from
the housekeeper back to the male head of household? Or is the quickest
way to open up the Census event and the list of individuals it is shared
with, commit the name of the housekeeper to memory, close all the
windows, and then look for the housekeeper's name in the index?

Thanks for any tips!

I, too, am having the same problem. Every 'missing' RIN is higher than
the highest number in my file and when the Chronology screen eventually

option is to click ok. It continues and then gives me 3 more
individuals (all different) being not found.

After the last one the Chronology report comes up and appears to be
 complete.

All of the individuals that it says are missing seem to be really
missing. At least there's no RIN x (or any of the others). I'm at
a loss to determine who these individuals are that it's complaining about.

The individual that I was getting the report for has 4 children. I
originally thought that it might think those are the 4 missing even
though they show up on the report (after the error messages). But that
doesn't hold true for others, e.g. the message comes up 11 times for
MY chronology report and I definitely don't have that many children.

I know in the past I've pulled up these individual's chronology report
for these individuals with no problems (one of them is for me). I've
gone back to my version 7 database and individuals with those RINs do
not exist either, so it doesn't feel like I've really lost any
 individuals.

Yes, I've restarted Legacy, Rebooted the computer, done File
Maintenance Check/Repair and Compacts multiple times. I've also Reset
 the Chronology Report Options.

Any ideas on where to look next?

You can either make a COPY of your family file and move that over, or
you can BACKUP your family file and restore it on the laptop.

If you have been used Legacy 8 on your desktop pc you will presumably
know where to save the files. What have you used to get other files
from one machine to the other? - a pen drive, portable hard drive,
bluetooth or what?

I'd recommend you make a backup in the usual way, but backup to your
external device. Then plug the device into your laptop and restore the
backup.

[LegacyUG] Backup

2014-02-08 Thread Barbara
I have installed Legacy 8. I am still struggling with backups from the 1st
time I started using Legacy - way back when. I have a MESS on my computer from
saved/backup and I need your help. I'm a dunce and can't follow the directions
given in the book or in the help icon. Please be patient with me.

First: how do I save my files so they can be retrieved if something happens to
my hard drive. I also have an external drive I save to? I haven't done it,
but could save to a thumb drive.

Second: How do I save so when I open Legacy, I can work with the files?

Thanks
Barb

[LegacyUG] Problem with searching

2014-01-24 Thread Barbara Thomas
I am using Windows 7 64 bit and Legacy 8.0.0.385.

In order to change the way I have formatted Source Detail -
Text/Comments for marriages I have been trying to create a list of all
individuals to whom I have attached a particular marriage certificate
source.

I have used Search - Detailed Search - Look for: Individual - Where to
look: Source-Citation - How to look: Contains - What to look for: here I
have entered some text unique to that certificate (usually the bride's
maiden name).

This search worked (and is still working) perfectly in Legacy 7.5 but
the same search in Legacy 8 is not bringing up all the individuals I
would expect to find and is adding a handful of random people from my file.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Barbara

[LegacyUG] Backup Legacy

2013-11-07 Thread Barbara Pixley
I recently had my pc crash and thought for awhile I'd lost Legacy-all 13,000+
names, notes etc...also lost a few years off my life! I backup on Carbonite and
an external hard drive. I understood that Carbonite backed up everything
automatically but didn't! Evidently you have to 'adjust settings'. 'Did manage
to get my Legacy restored from the external hard drive. Legacy support also
suggested SkyDrive and Dropbox, neither of which I use. In a recent Family Tree
Magazine a site recommended was backupmytree.com
Would like feedback from anyone who uses Carbonite, SkyDrive, Dropbox and/or
backupmytree.com as to how you like it, ease of use, success in restoring files
etc.
 Thanks,
Barbara Pixley

Re: [LegacyUG] Font size for sources

2013-09-30 Thread Barbara
Thank you for your reply. My problem actually turned out to be a bug
which support has submitted to the programmers. When you're printing an
individual report, if you check the box 'include chronology pages' then
whatever font size you selected for sources is ignored and the source
citations are printed in a font about the size of 8 pt. This bug only
exists on the individual report - the family group report and the report
generated from the chronology view work fine.

On the family screen, there is a line that ends Window
 Options Help.

Click OPTIONS. Click Customize. Click FONTS tab.

Now, in the 3rd of 4 sections of the screen there's a NOTES
line above a SOURCES line. Click on the font-name for
Sources. This brings up a screen where you can specify
font-face and size, whether bold/ital/ul . Change the font
 size there.

It worked for me, at least, on my free version, which is a
 couple years old.

[LegacyUG] Font size for sources

2013-09-21 Thread Barbara
I am having trouble getting the font size to change for an individual
report. I have Legacy 7.5. I went to: individual report report
options fonts. Then I made the sources times new roman, 12. The
font size for the source citations on the report remain very small.

Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology Timeline question

2013-09-09 Thread Barbara
I hve update 7.5.0.270

Dates:
At the top of the page: Parents
Next line: Life Range 13 Nov 1931 to present
Next line: -11930 Sept 23 Spouse
Next line: 1931 Nov 13Birth
Next line: 1940Residence

All dates appear to be correct. Perhaps in one of the set-up files I
need to delete a checkmark.

1) I do not have a file with a fdb extension.
2) When I go out, the pop-up says Baker Schwarting.fab I know that is not
correct
3) When I go to search for file - it says f. Baker Schwarting.zip and can't
open to read -gobbley-gook

HELP - I need to start back at step 1 and back-up correctly. It is obviousl I
haven't been backing up correctly from the very beginning.

With a question about Sources it is always helpful if you say whether
you are using SourceWriter or Basic Sourcing.

I use SourceWriter so I can only tell you how I source records from
FamilySearch databases in SW. For starters, I don't just copy the
Citation which FS suggests and I use a separate Master Source for each
FS database.

For the examples you quote, I would use the generic Online Database
template and put Germany, Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 in the Master
Source Database Title field. In the Source Details Item of Interest
field I would enter Nicolaus Imo's 1817 christening and in the Credit
field I would enter citing FHL film # 367456 (title of film here.)

There are purists who would say I should not include the title of the
film because it is not given on the actual record but has to be looked
up in the FS catalog but I find it helpful to do this. If there is an
item and/or page number given, I would put this between citing and FHL.

I then copy and paste the text into the Source Details Text field.

For Felicitas' record, the only difference would be in the Item of
Interest and Text fields.

If I were also to put the URL as you have quoted into the Source Detail
Comments field it would give me a direct link to the online record and
is something I will consider doing.

  Barbara,
Yes you can enter as many sources as you need to. Open the Assigned Sources
window for the individual. If the title of the source shows under the first
source and the Events box is Empty that means it is the same event as above it.
To add the citation then you need to highlight it and then click on Edit
Detail. Be aware that some source types there will be no citation detail except
the date entered and file ID, if that is what you are referring to that it
won’t let you enter any detail. You may have to give us more info on that.

Is it possible to add two sources to the same event? I can't seem to do it.
Seems odd that one would have to have two events called birth in order to
have two sources for the same event.

I have deluxe up-to-date version. I click on birth and click the 2nd source.
The title of the source shows under the first source, but does not identify it
as birth and will not let me add detail.

Re: [LegacyUG] Editing reports in Microsoft Word

2013-06-15 Thread Barbara Snow
Yes; I'm afraid my query is caused by my lack of sophistication in how to
manipulate the data once it is in Microsoft Word. The footnotes will renumber,
which is great, but when I add a footnote, I have to change the formatting to
make them match... and I thought I could do this by creating and applying
styles and removing contradictory styles. Sometimes it works, but sometimes
not. I'm struggling, but unless someone tells me it can't be done, I think I'll
put my efforts into trying to figure this out rather than having to retype
everything from scratch.

The problem is that when I write the final genealogy, I want the text and data
to flow more smoothly than the output from Legacy; I want to be able to edit
it. And of course I have much more data in my database than I want to include
in the genealogy -- no one needs to see transcriptions of every census. One
other possibility is to make copies of those portions of the database I want to
write up and remove events I don't want included and do the best I can to
create a sentence flow that is adequate.

But it seems to me that it would be better by far to be able to edit within the
Word document and that it should be possible. Do you have anyone on staff who
could offer me advice on how to do that ? I'm at an age when I must acknowledge
my mortality and need to get almost 40 years of research into writing and
deposited where it will be available to future generations. When I entered all
my data into a genealogy program, I hoped I would have the means to do that,
but so far I've not been able to achieve acceptable output. I've certainly
heard from all the writers that you can't create a genealogy from your
software, but it seems to me that you should be able to. One reason I choose
Legacy was because it had true footnotes; ones that would appear on the bottom
of the page and renumber when a footnote was added or removed. That was the
first essential element.

You can save book reports to RTF (Rich Text Format), which readily opens in

[LegacyUG] Editing reports in Microsoft Word

2013-06-14 Thread Barbara Snow
I want to be able to dump my reports into a Microsoft Word document that I can
edit by using styles to get consistent formatting of text and footnotes and
using the person sequencing technique described by Alvy Ray Smith in
Genealogical Writing in the 21st Century .

I want to achieve the ability to renumber individuals because it want to
continue only male lines; condensing information on female lines in the child
report under an individual and that is not a choice available for register or
modified register numbering. I am willing to go through the tedious task of
bookmarking and sequencing to make this happen.

I want to be able to edit the text as much as I want, deleting and inserting
footnotes as I edit, remove condense and add data. When I save a report in rtf
then open it in Word, I can see the formatting used and think I should be able
to replace it with styles, but I am struggling to make this work. I know that
this too will be tedious, but I think it would be easier to edit than type
anew, especially when it comes to adding footnotes.

Has anyone accomplished this? Or determined that it is not possible? I welcome
advice.

[LegacyUG] Panic!

2013-04-07 Thread Barbara Ford
I hope I still have the right address! I haven't posted in a very long
time. Panic time! I just tried to go into my Legacy program, and it is
telling me that a problem caused the program to stop working. I
tried several times, including a reboot. I use Windows 7 now and have
successfully migrated from computer to computer several times since I
began using Legacy. I am still using Version 6, and for now that is
what I want to continue to do. I am working on an obituary right now
for my mother, who is in her last few days. So, no time for anything
but the simplest solutions here. Of all times for the program to
crash

May I just say what I THINK will work, and someone please tell me if
this will not work. I have a note to myself, from my last computer
upgrade, that says, Rather than using the CD to install the program,
go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ and download and install the
latest version of Legacy 6. (Will it be obvious to me where version
6 is?)

Then I have another note that says make sure the Legacy folder is on
C: and install the program also to C:/Legacy; the program will pick up
all my preferences and file data. Is this correct still? If this is
correct, then should I uninstall Legacy from this computer first?

Thanks for any help,

If you have something like Adobe Photoshop Elements you can open your
PDF's there and it will extract the photos for you. Do it one PDF at a time.

The other way (depending on the size of your photos) is to open the PDF
as usual. Depending on your PDF reader there may be a camera icon in the
menu that allows you to take a screenshot of the photo. You'd want to be
able to do that at full size, of course.

It depends what software is available to you but,no, you can't edit a
photo inside a PDF. Not in the way you mean, anyway.

And no, you shouldn't be editing JPG's. It's a compressed format and
every time you edit and re-save you'll lose picture quality. Your photos
should be in TIFF to begin with but that's not always possible.

Likewise it will DELETE/HIDE USA if you wish. IF your family tree has
lots of different countries, it is fine I guess. But for me, it drives me
crazy to see every date in a printout include USA. You would never see that
in a book. I don't use that field, just 3 fields for town, county,
state-province-country. My personal opinion for people with USA families, is
that if someone you are printing out a report for, doesn't know that MA is
Massachusetts USA, or ON is Canada, they wouldn't actually read it in the
first place.
Pick a format and stick with it - 3 fields even if it is just , , MA in
case you want to do a sort by county or state.
Check your Master Lists Location every few months to merge any
mis-spellings or incorrect counties, etc., especially before you upload a
printout.

Thanks to those of you who helped me with this. I did use the bracket with the
name of the husband. That way I can keep tract of her.

Much appreciated.

  Merry Christmas.

Can you add an unknown wife who is the mother of children? There is a second
wife, but she is their step-mother.
  Thanks

[LegacyUG] Chronology Report

2012-11-10 Thread Barbara Thomas
I am running the latest version of Legacy Deluxe on a Windows 64 bit system.

When in Chronology View, if I click on the Report button a Print Setup
dialogue box appears and clicking on either OK or Cancel has the effect
of making the dialogue box disappear for of a couple of seconds and then
reappear. Using Alt-F4 or clicking the X has no effect either. The
only way out is to use Task Manager and end the task.

I have run File Maintenance, restarted my PC and reinstalled Legacy.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology Report

2012-11-10 Thread Barbara Thomas
Thanks Ron

I kept playing about with various report options and the problem seems
to have resolved itself. I've no idea exactly what it was that
corrected it. As you say the Print Setup box is nothing to do with
Legacy so nothing makes sense.

To correct the omission on my original posting I am using Windows 7 64
bit which has obviously had a bit of a hiccough!

Thanks for your reply.

To be more specific... this is how I copy a citation...

Add the Alt. Name event, as Michele suggests. (You might consider adding an
Alt. Spelling event if that's closer to what these are.)
Click on the person's source (little books) icon.
Highlight the citation line for the AKA and click on the two-pages copy
source to clipboard icon in the lower left to copy it to the clipboard.
(NOTE: If you want what's already on the clipboard, go in and Save it,
because this bit will overwrite that.)
Then highlight the citation line for the Alt. Name event and click on the
blue minus sign add clipboard source to the current event icon.
  Close that window.
  Then delete the AKA/alternate name.

  Hope this helps wasn't over-kill.

You will need to do this one at a time. Before you delete the AKA, make the
alt. name event and then copy the citation, paste it to the event, then go back
and delete the AKA.

A hearty thank you to everyone who gave such wonderful ideas to the question
os AKA and Alt. names. Most helpful!.

Now another related question. I've decided to get rid of the AKA and have
only Alt. names, because they are not AKA, but other spellings of the name.
How can I do that without losing the source that is attached to it?

I surely appreciate all of your ideas.

Go to view, then master lists, then location. Click on options to the
right, and then on expand/contract location parts.

Make sure the all locations in list is marked under Records to Change,
and the Expand Long Location Names and contract Short Location names is

Check the Add, 'United States' under the USA Country Names. Click

Example:

Re: [LegacyUG] AniMap

2012-05-29 Thread Barbara
Thanks Michele and Randy,

I am attempting to find Miles, Centre, Pennsylvania for the period of 1728.
It just doesn't show it.
Also, looking for Bethlehem (Lower Nazareth), Northhampton, Pennsylvania for
1763.
Pine Grove, Berks (Schuhlkill). Pennsylvania 1802.

I'm don't know how to navigate around the site and need help with that.
Perhaps I'm expecting too much.

I thought it was okay to talk about any of the add on programs that Legacy
sells so

I use AniMap all the time. Yes, you can consult the Redbook or the
Handybook to see when a county was formed from what parent county BUT in
Animap you can plot specific places (more than one at a time) and see where
they are in relation to these boundary changes. For example, a town might
be right near the border of another county in 1863 so you know that you need
to check the adjacent county. Most people would travel to the point that
was easiest to get to do their business. It might not be in the county
that they lived. You can link families in different counties because you
can see that they actually lived quite close to each other. You can overlay
a modern map over the top. It also show a lot of things other than towns,
like cemeteries and churches. AND, you can plot by lat/long :)

2) I have a scanner. Should I use that then save to my pictures file and then

Not that I know of. I had looked at the Lineage report when I was working on
my DAR application -- my lineage goes through my mom and her mom before going
all male.

However, I am now waiting excitedly to see if someone answers you in the
affirmative! ;)

I had submitted a suggestion on a flexible lineage report that run between
any two people (rather than just starting at one person and going up their male
ancestor line).
I did not however specifically ask for the siblings of the females. Or I
guess in the context of my suggestion, it would be to show the siblings of both
partners right? Hmm, that would be a bit harder.

Hi folks,

I have the updated 7.5 deluxe version of Legacy. I must be a dunce as I'm
having trouble with backup. I need detail advice. I usually go to file and
then backup family file
Perhaps, I'm entering the incorrect information in the box where I want to save
the file. I backup in two places:

1. My computer C: drive and
2. thumb drive

1. When I go to open in the C drive, I get an error message error in opening.
Would you like to try again? When I say yes, it opens. When I go to help
- it indicates I should run scan disk - how do I do that? nothing iunder the
help on the tool bar indicates how to do that.

2. The same happen in the thumb drive.

You don't, at first, enter anything!

After selecting the Backup Family File option from the menu (or pressing

for
currently?

Jenny, thanks for answering me. My response is in blue, if your computer can
read the color.

1. To open my file I'm referring to the backup file. What is the the
correct Restore family file command? I didn't know there was such a command.

2. Jenny says - When I say backup I am referring to a zip file created by
using
the Backup family file command, which is what I presume you are doing,
as opposed to just saving your family file with different name and/or in
a different place.
Yes, it has a zip ending on it.
Should I be saving to saving your family file with different name and/or in a
different place?

You can print the pedigree chart in Legacy using the four color option. Go
to Report Options, click on the format tab. Put a check in the box that says
Put boxes around individuals. Close the screen. Click on Color Text and
Boxes. You will get a box that lets you chose the color option that you
prefer. I hope this helps.

Locations should always be entered as they were at the time of the event.

You can add notes about changes in notes for the location in the
Master Location List or in the notes for the event Location Notes can
be included in the Location Index in a report.

I's always interesting to read of how much a town has moved around.
In the US we just see county or state boundaries change around a town
not whole countries, thankfully!

[LegacyUG] Locations Clean-Up questions

2012-01-31 Thread Barbara

Hello everyone,

I've had Legacy for years and haven't used it correctly - only adding data.
Now, I'm attempting to learn all its ins and outs - Jan and Feb in the north
are good for doing this. I'm cleaning up my locations list and need some help
because it is a mess. Right now I have three questions as I'm struggling the
best method for entering data.

1. When a location is shown on the list, is there a way to trace it back to
see the document it relates to?

2. Where does one place the name of the cemetery - in the space for location
for the Individual Information or in the individual's event or in the
event notes?

3. Where does one place the address of an cemetery or individual - in the
space for Individual Information or in the individual's event or in the
event notes?

If it is better to ask each question separately - tell me and I will do.

Thanks to all you experts,
Barb

[LegacyUG] Clean up Master location list question

2012-01-31 Thread Barbara
Hello everyone,

I've had Legacy for years and haven't used it correctly - only adding data.
Now, I'm attempting to learn all its ins and outs - Jan and Feb in the north
are good for doing this. I'm cleaning up my locations list and need some help
because it is a mess. Right now I have three questions as I'm struggling the
best methods.

Thanks for your time,
Barb

Re: [LegacyUG] Printing colors on Pedigree Chart

2011-11-04 Thread Barbara Krecklow
It works for me. First go to options, customize, click on the view tab.
About half way down the left side of the page is a box for Ancestor Color
Coding. Put a check in the box and click Save. Next go to the Tools menu and
click on Apply Ancestor Colors. Make sure that your name appears in the box.
Click on Apply Color Coding. When you've done that go to report, Pedigree,
chose the Color Text and Boxes option, On that screen you can choose the 4
Line Colors option. Click Save, then go to Report Options. The option for
putting boxes around individuals will be available.

I hope this works for you,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Printing colors on Pedigree Chart

While watching today's webinar, I tried to replicate the color coding on a
printed pedigree chart. The color coding option works for family group
sheets but not the pedigree chart.

It is my understanding that one need to select reports, chose the color
text and boxes option and then select the Format Tab and select the first
option: Put boxes around individuals. For some reason, the Put boxes
around individuals is all grayed out and not selectable. Can someone tell
me how to make that option selectable?

I'm running Legacy 7.5.014.

Thank you.

[LegacyUG] Need to remove my ancestral line from family file

2011-04-17 Thread Barbara Lewis

ancestral list of my kin to delete, but it still contained all my spouse's
people...

Question and/or description is confusing. If ancestral line then that's you

everyone that came before you, leaving your descendants. Or, did you mean to
remove you and your descendants from the tree? If so, break the link between

I thought I could do it by going up to Search and creating a focus file with

Barbara,
If all you want is just your spouse's line in the file then just unlink your
self from your spouse. Then create a new empty legacy file, then open a
split screen window, when it asks if you want to open another file in the
new window then pick the file that you just unlinked your self in. Make sure
you have created a backup of the old file first then find your spouse and
then drag him to the new file and you then should have a file with just his
lineage in the file. If you need to find out more on this just look in the
Legacy help files on splitting your database.

Hi Barbara,

the 2 people icon and sometimes a layer comes up with marriage
list written at the top, and my program freezes up. I have to end

I want the other wife, I type her name in the index.

I don't know why you're having that problem, but I can tell you about
another method for getting to a second (or third...) spouse.

In Family View there's a border around all the different areas, and this
is an active part of the window...

Click on the border between the husband and wife to cycle through the
siblings of the highlighted person.

Click on the border to the left of the husband to cycle through his wives.

Click on the border to the right of the wife to cycle through her husbands.

There are more clickable areas in the borders - look at the bottom of
the window as you move the cursor around, and the text box will change
to indicate what can be done at that place.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

I don't know of any way to not have a preferred picture amongst the
ones attached to an individual but if you attach the picture of the
headstone to the burial event instead of the individual himself, then
the picture does not show up within the individuals screen in Legacy.

I am new to Legacy and I was wondering how to have pictures in the
database without it being a preferred picture. For example, I have a
picture of a headstone under an individuals name but I do not have a
picture of that person. When I open that individual the headstone pops
up where a picture would normally be. Is it possible to put in a
picture without making it preferred?

Thanks

First, make sure Legacy is set to display General Notes, if that is where
all your notes are located. I have 'Lost mine when I switched to Research

If that is not the problem, backup your data then do the File, Repair, and
then if that does not work, try the procedure Dennis suggested.

I would start my closing Legacy and restarting your computer to see if
that solves the problem.

person who wrote the Will, since at this point in time s/he is
 deceased.

That's interesting - and helpful. I have dealt with a few Wills and
in a couple of cases had included details of the Probate as an Event
for the Testator because the Legacy-provided Sentence seemed to be
written from that point of view. However, now that you say it I see
 that it
makes entirely more sense to have a Probate Event only for the
 Executor(s).

(Mind you, by your reasoning one should not attach an Obituary or
Memorial Inscription Event to a deceased person, but to the person who
 wrote same)

Not quite, Jenny, because an Obit or memorial is *about* the deceased
whereas the granting of probate isn't. The Executors to a Will may, of
course, be a Bank or Solicitors.

Since the availability of the Probate Records I have been adding a Probate
Event to the deceased as it allows me to show who they chose as executors
and how large (or small) their estate was. I feel that this helps build up
a picture of my ancestors which is what family history is all about.

2010-07-16 Thread Barbara Thomas
Stick with us Bruce. These last couple of days have been an exception. I
have learnt so much about Legacy just how much the programme has to offer
just by reading the messages over the past two years. My thanks to all who
have taught me so much without my even having asked any questions.

Hi All,
I joined this group 2 days ago, to learn and improve my knowledge of
genealogy and Legacy in particular. Query DO YOU ALL, capitals intended,
think that I have achieved that goal in the last 48 hours. Nothing I have
seen relates to genealogy, family history etc.
Perhaps the time has come,

[LegacyUG] Charting comparison

Charting Companion is a separate software, what are the differences?  I have

Re: [LegacyUG] User group interest

2010-06-02 Thread Barbara Johnson
I had subscribed, etc. and saw Arnold's name. Since he's passed, it would be
difficult to contact him. (I'm not into seances!). I hope to be around for a
while and our Society has several members who would like to form an interest
group. I've printed off all the info for us to begin one.

Thanks so much for providing all these services. We all are enchanted with
our Legacy Family Tree CDs. Jim Terry spoke to our Society about using the
program. He was awesome!

You have to subscribe yourself, which you obviously did since your post
 went to the list.

I don’t know how you could have seen that Arnold’s name was on the list
unless you were looking at the archives? The list of subscribers is not
 public information.

It’s quite possible that his name has already been unsubscribed from the
 list.

 Thanks for using Legacy.

I noted that Arnold Stewart of Mount Vernon, WA is on your list. Arnold

 Thanks.
