Re: [LegacyUG] TMG looking for new home Legacy vs RootsMagic 7
Thanks, Cheryl, for not staying out of it :). A lot of us TMG users are trying to figure out how we can do things in our new software. This is very hard sometimes because we are not nearly as familiar with the new software, because it is often hard to think outside of the TMG box, and because we have such long lists of workarounds we are trying to find. So, any feasible ideas are welcome! They may not work for all, but they may work for some. For those who do not knot their undies easily ... I experimented with putting the number or letter in parens, say (11), after any real suffix. The parens would distinguish the code from any true Prefix or Suffix that I have and from the RINs (displayed as [11]) and user IDs (displayed as {11}). Another nice thing about the prefix/suffix solution is that those fields are searchable. So, I could search for all persons coded (11) or for all persons coded at all ((). This is not a replacement for more tags (which can be set via Advanced Tagging), but it might be a feasible workaround for some. Another possibility would be to treat the Legacy Tags as one would a 9-bit binary number. However, to distinguish 10 lines, you would need to use only 4 Tags. Where T is tagged and u is untagged: Tags - 1234 Line 1 - uuuT Line 2 - uuTu Line 3 - uuTT Line 4 - uTuu Line 5 - uTuT Line 6 - uTTu Line 7 - uTTT Line 8 - Tuuu Line 9 - TuuT Line 10 - TuTu This would have the advantage that one would learn to count to 10 in binary very quickly. In the name fields, Legacy has both a prefix and a suffix, both of which will display in the Name List as well as the family-view and pedigree view. Pick one of 'em, and assign your color-lines a number -- me, I'd assign the line with the most people the #1; but you could assign Amber as #1 and Yellow as #25; or your own line as #1, etc. The possibilities probably rival those 256 million colors 90% of the population can't distinguish anyway. And people have said, create 10 projects but that doesn’t allow me to move the person easily to the supposedly correct line/project. Mike, thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I have both of them in my data base and I have her linked to the person she married. The first to the father of the child and he might be unknown. So step one is to add the woman. Step two add the child and link it to the mother. This will create the first 'marriage' to an Unknown man. Step 3, add the husband to the mother, creating the second relationship. Lastly, set the child relationship to this second man as step- Remember. In Legacy Marriages do not necessarily involve a wedding. Re: [LegacyUG] Where to put gathered information?
You could create a new Legacy file or files for these items. I'm migrating into Legacy from TMG. I have a couple of files there for these purposes. This makes the information readily available, but doesn't clutter up my main file. The system will work just as well in Legacy. I store all my media in folder, actually folder tree, in Documents. This makes it easily assessable for several purposes; Legacy being only one of those purposes. Much of the info is nothing I would ever put into the data base as event/fact. Perhaps, a list of all the Wells people in the 1850 census of their county. Or the Barbados history of a Wells family that MIGHT be mine. I am speaking of what might be called ancillary information that will be useful when doing research or just reviewing my data. As I say, I know I can put it into Evernote (or One Note as the case may be), but wouldn't it be elegant if there was a place in Legacy for it so that ALL our information for genealogy could be in one place, instead of spread around in note programs or separate files on our computer? Just a dreamer, I guess. I didn't really like that option anyway, because you cannot arrange it in any meaningful way. I know that some folks have suggested using an imaginary person, named perhaps, Wells, Joseph Research, or some such. My problem with this is, if I want to print out (or review) ALL the information I have about a person, the notes in the imaginary person's file would not be included. The solution may lie with using Evernote, but I do wish our Legacy had a section similar to Evernote that allowed us to include and organize all the information we have gathered about a person. Don't say that the Events/Facts would serve, since much of the information is conjectural or at least not substantial enough to use as a fact. [LegacyUG] navigating to associates
I am a TMG user with a newbie question. I am trying to figure out how to navigate among individuals in a database in Legacy 8. Say I have an individual Census event that is shared with the members of the household (wife, children, unrelated housekeeper). Can I directly navigate from the owner of that Census event to the housekeeper or from the housekeeper back to the male head of household? Or is the quickest way to open up the Census event and the list of individuals it is shared with, commit the name of the housekeeper to memory, close all the windows, and then look for the housekeeper's name in the index? Hi Brett, the ability to simply pop up a window from an individuals event list, with the list of shared individuals so that you can select any on the list to go to. Exactly what I had in mind! Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Individual Error Messages
I, too, am having the same problem. Every 'missing' RIN is higher than the highest number in my file and when the Chronology screen eventually loads there does not seem to any problem with it. Like Dave I have done all the usual File Maintenance, etc., to no avail. On 26/05/2014 19:04, Dave Keeney wrote: Using Deluxe Edition, Version 8.0.0.427. My only option is to click ok. It continues and then gives me 3 more individuals (all different) being not found. After the last one the Chronology report comes up and appears to be complete. All of the individuals that it says are missing seem to be really missing. At least there's no RIN x (or any of the others). I'm at a loss to determine who these individuals are that it's complaining about. The individual that I was getting the report for has 4 children. I originally thought that it might think those are the 4 missing even though they show up on the report (after the error messages). But that doesn't hold true for others, e.g. the message comes up 11 times for MY chronology report and I definitely don't have that many children. I know in the past I've pulled up these individual's chronology report for these individuals with no problems (one of them is for me). I've gone back to my version 7 database and individuals with those RINs do not exist either, so it doesn't feel like I've really lost any individuals. Yes, I've restarted Legacy, Rebooted the computer, done File Maintenance Check/Repair and Compacts multiple times. I've also Reset the Chronology Report Options. Any ideas on where to look next? You can either make a COPY of your family file and move that over, or you can BACKUP your family file and restore it on the laptop. If you have been used Legacy 8 on your desktop pc you will presumably know where to save the files. What have you used to get other files from one machine to the other? - a pen drive, portable hard drive, bluetooth or what? [LegacyUG] Backup
I have installed Legacy 8. I am still struggling with backups from the 1st time I started using Legacy - way back when. I have a MESS on my computer from saved/backup and I need your help. I'm a dunce and can't follow the directions given in the book or in the help icon. Please be patient with me. First: how do I save my files so they can be retrieved if something happens to my hard drive. I also have an external drive I save to? I haven't done it, but could save to a thumb drive. Second: How do I save so when I open Legacy, I can work with the files? [LegacyUG] Problem with searching
I am using Windows 7 64 bit and Legacy 8.0.0.385. In order to change the way I have formatted Source Detail - Text/Comments for marriages I have been trying to create a list of all individuals to whom I have attached a particular marriage certificate source. I have used Search - Detailed Search - Look for: Individual - Where to look: Source-Citation - How to look: Contains - What to look for: here I have entered some text unique to that certificate (usually the bride's maiden name). This search worked (and is still working) perfectly in Legacy 7.5 but the same search in Legacy 8 is not bringing up all the individuals I would expect to find and is adding a handful of random people from my file. Has anyone else experienced this? [LegacyUG] Backup Legacy
I recently had my pc crash and thought for awhile I'd lost Legacy-all 13,000+ names, notes etc...also lost a few years off my life! I backup on Carbonite and an external hard drive. I understood that Carbonite backed up everything automatically but didn't! Evidently you have to 'adjust settings'. 'Did manage to get my Legacy restored from the external hard drive. Legacy support also suggested SkyDrive and Dropbox, neither of which I use. In a recent Family Tree Magazine a site recommended was backupmytree.com Would like feedback from anyone who uses Carbonite, SkyDrive, Dropbox and/or backupmytree.com as to how you like it, ease of use, success in restoring files etc. Thanks, Barbara Pixley Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Font size for sources
Thank you for your reply. My problem actually turned out to be a bug which support has submitted to the programmers. When you're printing an individual report, if you check the box 'include chronology pages' then whatever font size you selected for sources is ignored and the source citations are printed in a font about the size of 8 pt. This bug only exists on the individual report - the family group report and the report generated from the chronology view work fine. Barbara On 9/30/2013 6:49 AM, singhals wrote: I've lost the genesis of this thread, so I may be repeating something you've already tried. If so, forgive and delete. On the family screen, there is a line that ends Window Options Help. Click OPTIONS. Click Customize. Click FONTS tab. Now, in the 3rd of 4 sections of the screen there's a NOTES line above a SOURCES line. Click on the font-name for Sources. This brings up a screen where you can specify font-face and size, whether bold/ital/ul . Change the font size there. It worked for me, at least, on my free version, which is a couple years old. [LegacyUG] A real problem with backup
I despertly need your help. I have an updated Legacy Deluxe. I just went to my backup folder to see what was in it and I can't retrieve it. Obviously, I did something wrong in backing it up. 1) I do not have a file with a fdb extension. 2) When I go out, the pop-up says Baker Schwarting.fab I know that is not correct 3) When I go to search for file - it says f. Baker Schwarting.zip and can't open to read -gobbley-gook HELP - I need to start back at step 1 and back-up correctly. It is obviousl I haven't been backing up correctly from the very beginning. I've listened to the CD training lessons and still can't figure this one out. With a question about Sources it is always helpful if you say whether you are using SourceWriter or Basic Sourcing. I use SourceWriter so I can only tell you how I source records from FamilySearch databases in SW. For starters, I don't just copy the Citation which FS suggests and I use a separate Master Source for each FS database. For the examples you quote, I would use the generic Online Database template and put Germany, Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 in the Master Source Database Title field. In the Source Details Item of Interest field I would enter Nicolaus Imo's 1817 christening and in the Credit field I would enter citing FHL film # 367456 (title of film here.) There are purists who would say I should not include the title of the film because it is not given on the actual record but has to be looked up in the FS catalog but I find it helpful to do this. If there is an item and/or page number given, I would put this between citing and FHL. I then copy and paste the text into the Source Details Text field. For Felicitas' record, the only difference would be in the Item of Interest and Text fields. If I were also to put the URL as you have quoted into the Source Detail Comments field it would give me a direct link to the online record and is something I will consider doing. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Open the Assigned Sources window for the individual. If the title of the source shows under the first source and the Events box is Empty that means it is the same event as above it. To add the citation then you need to highlight it and then click on Edit Detail. Be aware that some source types there will be no citation detail except the date entered and file ID, if that is what you are referring to that it won’t let you enter any detail. You may have to give us more info on that. Re: [LegacyUG] Editing reports in Microsoft Word
Yes; I'm afraid my query is caused by my lack of sophistication in how to manipulate the data once it is in Microsoft Word. The footnotes will renumber, which is great, but when I add a footnote, I have to change the formatting to make them match... and I thought I could do this by creating and applying styles and removing contradictory styles. Sometimes it works, but sometimes not. I'm struggling, but unless someone tells me it can't be done, I think I'll put my efforts into trying to figure this out rather than having to retype everything from scratch. The problem is that when I write the final genealogy, I want the text and data to flow more smoothly than the output from Legacy; I want to be able to edit it. And of course I have much more data in my database than I want to include in the genealogy -- no one needs to see transcriptions of every census. One other possibility is to make copies of those portions of the database I want to write up and remove events I don't want included and do the best I can to create a sentence flow that is adequate. But it seems to me that it would be better by far to be able to edit within the Word document and that it should be possible. Do you have anyone on staff who could offer me advice on how to do that ? I'm at an age when I must acknowledge my mortality and need to get almost 40 years of research into writing and deposited where it will be available to future generations. When I entered all my data into a genealogy program, I hoped I would have the means to do that, but so far I've not been able to achieve acceptable output. I've certainly heard from all the writers that you can't create a genealogy from your software, but it seems to me that you should be able to. One reason I choose Legacy was because it had true footnotes; ones that would appear on the bottom of the page and renumber when a footnote was added or removed. That was the first essential element. [LegacyUG] Editing reports in Microsoft Word
I want to be able to dump my reports into a Microsoft Word document that I can edit by using styles to get consistent formatting of text and footnotes and using the person sequencing technique described by Alvy Ray Smith in Genealogical Writing in the 21st Century . I want to achieve the ability to renumber individuals because it want to continue only male lines; condensing information on female lines in the child report under an individual and that is not a choice available for register or modified register numbering. I am willing to go through the tedious task of bookmarking and sequencing to make this happen. I want to be able to edit the text as much as I want, deleting and inserting footnotes as I edit, remove condense and add data. When I save a report in rtf then open it in Word, I can see the formatting used and think I should be able to replace it with styles, but I am struggling to make this work. I know that this too will be tedious, but I think it would be easier to edit than type anew, especially when it comes to adding footnotes. Has anyone accomplished this? Or determined that it is not possible? I welcome advice. [LegacyUG] Panic!
I hope I still have the right address! I haven't posted in a very long time. Panic time! I just tried to go into my Legacy program, and it is telling me that a problem caused the program to stop working. I tried several times, including a reboot. I use Windows 7 now and have successfully migrated from computer to computer several times since I began using Legacy. I am still using Version 6, and for now that is what I want to continue to do. I am working on an obituary right now for my mother, who is in her last few days. So, no time for anything but the simplest solutions here. Of all times for the program to crash May I just say what I THINK will work, and someone please tell me if this will not work. I have a note to myself, from my last computer upgrade, that says, Rather than using the CD to install the program, go to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ and download and install the latest version of Legacy 6. (Will it be obvious to me where version 6 is?) Then I have another note that says make sure the Legacy folder is on C: and install the program also to C:/Legacy; the program will pick up all my preferences and file data. Is this correct still? If this is correct, then should I uninstall Legacy from this computer first? Re: [LegacyUG] jpeg and pdf pictures
Do I need a special program to put the pictures into TIFF? My scanner shows only JPEG and PDF. I have a copier/scanner/fax. I appreciate all of you who have taken the time to write me. I have Jeff's book (didn't see the workshop on line), but I haven't been able to decifer TIFF. I know that seems to be the best place to save family photos that there appears to be only one of a kind and then make copies in JPEG to share. A hearty thank you to each of you who responded. Do it one PDF at a time. The other way (depending on the size of your photos) is to open the PDF as usual. Depending on your PDF reader there may be a camera icon in the menu that allows you to take a screenshot of the photo. You'd want to be able to do that at full size, of course. It depends what software is available to you but,no, you can't edit a photo inside a PDF. Not in the way you mean, anyway. And no, you shouldn't be editing JPG's. It's a compressed format and every time you edit and re-save you'll lose picture quality. Your photos should be in TIFF to begin with but that's not always possible. IF your family tree has lots of different countries, it is fine I guess. But for me, it drives me crazy to see every date in a printout include USA. You would never see that in a book. I don't use that field, just 3 fields for town, county, state-province-country. My personal opinion for people with USA families, is that if someone you are printing out a report for, doesn't know that MA is Massachusetts USA, or ON is Canada, they wouldn't actually read it in the first place. Pick a format and stick with it - 3 fields even if it is just , , MA in case you want to do a sort by county or state. Check your Master Lists Location every few months to merge any mis-spellings or incorrect counties, etc., especially before you upload a printout. Thanks guys and gals. You are correct, now that you make me think. I will save the actual census under media. I remember that is what Jeff does. Go to the website and download version 6, making sure to install it into c:\Legacy (that's the same folder where I just put the folder from my old C:--is this right?) Yes, you can consult the Redbook or the Handybook to see when a county was formed from what parent county BUT in Animap you can plot specific places (more than one at a time) and see where they are in relation to these boundary changes. For example, a town might be right near the border of another county in 1863 so you know that you need to check the adjacent county. Most people would travel to the point that was easiest to get to do their business. It might not be in the county that they lived. You can link families in different counties because you can see that they actually lived quite close to each other. You can overlay a modern map over the top. It also show a lot of things other than towns, like cemeteries and churches. AND, you can plot by lat/long :) Michele -Original Message- From: Barbara [mailto:bschwart...@twcny.rr.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2012 7:12 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] AniMap While I like the concept of AniMap and I have a copy, I'm having difficulty understanding just how to use it. I didn't know there was such a command. 2. Re: [LegacyUG] Charting question
You can print the pedigree chart in Legacy using the four color option. Go to Report Options, click on the format tab. Put a check in the box that says Put boxes around individuals. Close the screen. Click on Color Text and Boxes. You will get a box that lets you chose the color option that you prefer. I hope this helps. [LegacyUG] Locations Clean-Up questions
Hello everyone, I've had Legacy for years and haven't used it correctly - only adding data. Now, I'm attempting to learn all its ins and outs - Jan and Feb in the north are good for doing this. I'm cleaning up my locations list and need some help because it is a mess. Right now I have three questions as I'm struggling the best method for entering data. 1. When a location is shown on the list, is there a way to trace it back to see the document it relates to? 2. Where does one place the name of the cemetery - in the space for location for the Individual Information or in the individual's event or in the event notes? 3. Where does one place the address of an cemetery or individual - in the space for Individual Information or in the individual's event or in the event notes? If it is better to ask each question separately - tell me and I will do. It works for me. First go to options, customize, click on the view tab. About half way down the left side of the page is a box for Ancestor Color Coding. Put a check in the box and click Save. Next go to the Tools menu and click on Apply Ancestor Colors. Make sure that your name appears in the box. Click on Apply Color Coding. When you've done that go to report, Pedigree, chose the Color Text and Boxes option, On that screen you can choose the 4 Line Colors option. Click Save, then go to Report Options. Then create a new empty legacy file, then open a split screen window, when it asks if you want to open another file in the new window then pick the file that you just unlinked your self in. Make sure you have created a backup of the old file first then find your spouse and then drag him to the new file and you then should have a file with just his lineage in the file. Re: [LegacyUG] Probate
Jenny M Benson wrote: On 13/08/2010 01:51, Ron Ferguson wrote: I have never created an Event for Wills and Probates thereof (a bit of legalese there) but only used them as Sources, linking each to the individuals mentioned in the will. My reasoning being that the granting of probate is, strictly speaking, not connected to the person who wrote the Will, since at this point in time s/he is deceased. That's interesting - and helpful. I have dealt with a few Wills and in a couple of cases had included details of the Probate as an Event for the Testator because the Legacy-provided Sentence seemed to be written from that point of view. However, now that you say it I see that it makes entirely more sense to have a Probate Event only for the Executor(s). (Mind you, by your reasoning one should not attach an Obituary or Memorial Inscription Event to a deceased person, but to the person who wrote same) Not quite, Jenny, because an Obit or memorial is *about* the deceased whereas the granting of probate isn't. The Executors to a Will may, of course, be a Bank or Solicitors. Ron Ferguson _ Since the availability of the Probate Records I have been adding a Probate Event to the deceased as it allows me to show who they chose as executors and how large (or small) their estate was. I feel that this helps build up a picture of my ancestors which is what family history is all about. Re: [LegacyUG] Test e-mails
Stick with us Bruce. These last couple of days have been an exception. I have learnt so much about Legacy just how much the programme has to offer just by reading the messages over the past two years. My thanks to all who have taught me so much without my even having asked any questions. Barbara Hi All, I joined this group 2 days ago, to learn and improve my knowledge of genealogy and Legacy in particular. Query DO YOU ALL, capitals intended, think that I have achieved that goal in the last 48 hours. Re: [LegacyUG] User group interest
I had subscribed, etc. and saw Arnold's name. Since he's passed, it would be difficult to contact him. (I'm not into seances!). I hope to be around for a while and our Society has several members who would like to form an interest group. I've printed off all the info for us to begin one. Thanks so much for providing all these services. We all are enchanted with our Legacy Family Tree CDs. Jim Terry spoke to our Society about using the program. He was awesome!
