McDonald's is setting out to poach Starbucks customers with the
biggest addition to its menu in 30 years. Starting this year, the
company's nearly 14,000 U.S. locations will install coffee bars with
baristas serving cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and the Frappe, similar
 to Starbucks' ice-blended Frappuccino.

Internal documents from 2007 say the program, which also will add
smoothies and bottled beverages, will add $1 billion to McDonald's
 annual sales of $21.6 billion.

Hey Mr. Jim...was the Tim that was on earlier today related to you?

 Bob R

 Bob/Chuck/Kaleb,

Yes, Tim Friesen is my 40 year old nephew.? When I sent the errant message
about the Dakar rally to the list, I copied Tim, and my brother, Tom
(Tim's Dad), and my son, Eric.? Tim must have hit reply to all when he
wanted us to know that the Dakar was canceled.

How his message reached the Okibenz list is certainly curious.? Tim?is a
Ford man, with a chipped diesel F250 crew cab, big tires and a 6 lift.?
 Kaleb?? Any ideas?

The motor is 120V, it has multiple leads but these are for achieving
different speeds. Indeed it does have an external starting capacitor.
Of course I forgot to grab it when I left.

Presumably the shop would have a suitable capacitor lying around, but
that would only verify that the motor is OK -- I guess if it is I
could assume that the capacitor is the problem.

 Allan,

The motor may use an external capacitor mounted near it, which could
be your problem. If the fan motor has 3 wires and runs at 208 to
240 volts, follow each wire until it leads you to a capacitor. Take
the capacitor with you for testing.

As for the videos of the car crashing almost head on into a barrier at 75

[MBZ] OT:Unified Germany - I thought the communists lost

2008-01-07 Thread Mitch Haley
I'm confused. Was East Germany absorbed into West Germany, or
was West Germany absorbed into East Germany? It seems like
the East German government is the surviving entity here:

Mitch,

Try taking your kids out of the public school system without enrolling
them in a Government approved private school system here in the States
and you'll discover how many parents rights you don't have. And by the
way, home schooling is only legal in some states because of a support
network that has been approved by big brother.

If you think home schooling is bad, try refusing to send your kid

you are confused because you suppose that the euros have a history of
similar freedoms to those we once enjoyed here in the usa. countries such
as germany have no tradition of individual liberty. consider for a moment
that the most popular german leader of the last 100 years was hitler and you
can get some kind of understanding.

what is stunning is how we have allowed this continental tyranny to take
hold in our nation.

I think there should be accountability/basic regulations regarding
homeschooling. I don't have anything against homeschooling... I just
think that there should be some guarantee that you will actually teach
them (and that they've learned something). The only way I see for that
guarantee to happen is for the government to enforce it.

It is unfortunate for the states who do not have the a parent

Heat, usually. If the motor has a starting winding and

Once touted as a climate friendly substitute for cars running on gasoline

 solve.
The latest broadside against biofuels is from the Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institute. Scientists there say that biofuels may not be superior
if their production results in environmental destruction, pollution and
 damage to human health.
The Smithsonian cites a Swiss study showing that fuels made from U.S. corn,
Brazilian soy and Malaysian palm oil may even be worse overall than fossil
fuels. The best alternatives, according to the Swiss study, include biofuels
from residual products, such as recycled cooking oil and ethanol from grass
 or wood.
Even so, the scientists think that biofuels may still have a future:
Different biofuels vary enormously in how eco-friendly they are, said
William Laurance, a staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research
Institute. We need to be smart and promote the right biofuels.
The question is, are big promoters of biofuels like Brazil, Malaysia, the
United States and the European Union going to heed that advice?

[MBZ] 123 GASSER INFO NEEDED

2008-01-07 Thread Dan Weeks
Folks:

Anyone have any info on the 123 230 gassers? Were they imported, or
are they by definition grey market? Is the 230 a good mill? Reliable?
Good FI system? Adequate power and economy? (numbers would be nice
here) Parts available (RUSTY?) and easy to work on? Any known
weaknesses of this mill?

I assume all the rest is the same as the diesel 123s, including,
including the trans.

My wife wants a Mercedes, too, now. Smaller than my SD, and gas, as
she only putts around town. This seems to be the best option. Doesn't
need a six or want a sixes fuel mileage, and I don't want to deal
with the legendary 115 blower motor fiasco.

Thanks in Advance. Also, if anyone knows of one FS reasonable, or
where I might find one, would love to hear about it.

It was a very expensive and failed experiment. It's 4 years later and

Re: [MBZ] OT:Unified Germany - I thought the communists lost

2008-01-07 Thread LarryT
Howdy,
I guess Va is one of the few states that allow homeschooling and
accomodates those wishing to do so to make things as easy as possible. My
daughter decided to homeschool our g-son when he was to enter the 1st
grade - luckily the state doesn't get in the way of those wishing to home
school and my daughter is fully qualified to teach him. He's 10 now and
scores in the highest areas of the stesting standards - mid to upper 90's
  - as well as being very well rounded. He plays soccer, golf and baseball
on every Saturday as well as taking a Drama class as well as a music class.

It is unconscionable that Germany would treat parents in such a manner.
It seems as though the Nazi's are still in control. The article mentioned
the Nazi era law mandating public schooling -- I would have thought all
the nazi laws would have been rescinded following the defeat of those
monsters. Evidently not. The logic of making everyone fit into the same
mold escapes me.

It's kind of surprising to see the UN standing on the proper side of
this issue. It doesn't happen often - but the German Gov't needs to be
brought into the 20th century -- then into the 21st Century once they
acclimate to the 20th.

 Mitch,

Try taking your kids out of the public school system without enrolling
them in a Government approved private school system here in the States
and you'll discover how many parents rights you don't have. And by the
way, home schooling is only legal in some states because of a support
network that has been approved by big brother.

I disagree with that, you are forgetting about Martin Luther who stood
up to the Catholic church and won.
It can be argued that his actions inspired others to stand up for their
rights and may well have influenced your founding fathers and their view
of liberty.
Also I think to say that Hitler was the most popular leader in the last
100 years is somewhat misleading, considering the circumstances.

Thanks in Advance. Also, if anyone knows of one FS reasonable, or
where I might find one, would love to hear about it.

There were a very few 230s imported by MBNA in the '70s; they are very
rare. Imagine the performance of an NA 300D with none of the advantages
of a 300D. The M115 cylinder head likes to do the OM603. I'd keep looking.

If the car is a 230E, it would have an M102 (a la the 190E) and is a
fabulous car.

[MBZ] Fuel economy report

2008-01-07 Thread OK Don
The '90 300D 2.5 got 37.4 mpg on the 1007 mile round trip to Houston
with local running around there and a trip to work today. The 300SDL
got 25 MPG on the trip down (it's there for the duration of the
internship). That's approximately 4 gallons per 100 miles for the 603
and 3gallons per 100 miles for the 602. I'm liking the 300D 2.5 better
all the time. Might have to sell the other three and find another 300D
2.5.

Kidnapped Have you seen how bad it has to get before the kids are
removed from a home? That's the LAST resort. Wittness the LACK of
response to the ealrier reports to child wlefare about Kaleb's new

your eyes. We don't pay enough for a foster family to take proper care
of kids, can't find enough homes for the kids that need them. So you
get what you pay for - those who do take them have other motives than
the kids best welfare in mind.

Re: [MBZ] 123 Gasser info needed

2008-01-07 Thread Dan Weeks
Thanks Tom, Hendrik, and Tom, for your replies. Looks like it's best
to avoid unless its a 230E. I'll restrict my search to that criteria.

I agree the 190 would be perfect for my wife, who is rather petite.
However, she was involved in a terrible accident in a civic once that
had her sleeping on a board and in physical therapy for 6 months
after being hit so hard by a drunk that it knocked the earings out of
her pierced ears. She wants something more substantial feeling,
whether or not the 201 is statistically safer than a 123.. She also
likes the classic square vintage mbz look, and thinks the newer ones
are far too generic. And she doesn't want a diesel for her own car,
and frankly, as many short trips as she drives, a diesel doesn't make
a lot of sense for her.

Thanks again, all. I'll let you know what turns up. Meanwhile, if
anyone has anything else to offer--a 115 with a known good blower
motor, for instance, or a finny in great shape for cheap, let me
know! :-)

Unfortunately, I've been involved with the system. We took temporary
custody of a Niece while her Mother got her drug filled life in order.
I learned through the process how much the State really can do. DHR
 was
has a court order in hand to remove her from the house she was
 living in
threatened to take legal action if we did not step in become
 responsible Aunt Uncle.

It was a very expensive and failed experiment. It's 4 years later and
the Niece is 17 years old, now lives with her (much older) drug
 dealing
Boyfriend the Mother is back on Crystal Methe. At least She is not

There were a very few 230s imported by MBNA in the '70s; they are very

I see from Wikipedia that the M102 (the 230E) was available in the

Re: [MBZ] OT:Unified Germany - I thought the communists lost

2008-01-07 Thread Tom Hargrave
I agree with Don.

Child Services (DHR in Alabama) is the most over worked government
organization in any state. The problem is that the workers have to
obtain unrefutable evidence then they have to present the evidence to a
Judge the judge has to issue a court order to have the child or
children removed. All of this is necessary because of our lawsuit happy
society. The Chld Services workers have to protect themselves from being
sued by the parents of the children they are trying to protect.

Based on Kaleb's his Wive's comments on the kid's overall condition,
Kaleb's new family are a likely good example of the system failing.
It's possible that the family had been investigated but Child Services
could not put together enough evidence to convince a judge to issue a
court order. But it's just as likely that they were never investigated
because of the work load most Child Services must carry.

My Niece was removed from her Mother 4 years too late - She was 13 years
old. Kaleb's new family are younger and they have a chance to make a
difference.

Not to put a damper on things, but despite its size the W201 is a much safer
car than a W123. The W123 was the last MB that was not specifically designed
for offset frontal impact (that started with the 126 and 201). The 123 also
doesn't have seatbelt pre-tensioners, airbags, or ABS. And you can forget the
115. Those cars predate the construction of MB's crash engineering facility
(1968), so a lot of the safety engineering was done under pretty primitive
conditions.

Your best bet might be a W124. The size feels like a W123 but the crash
performance is as good as a W126.

Of course, compared to an '85 Civic, any MB would serve you well. But you have
to remember that your survival is mostly determined by the design of the thing
you run into. Here's an illustration of what happens to a safe big old car

is left with the impression that the purpose of CS is to help the
worst parents keep their kids while taking the kids away from the
good parents. It's all a judgment call, and either way you go you
can be wrong.

One factor that skews the results is that good parents who genuinely
believe gov't has no business messing with their families make very
inviting targets, especially if they run up against a civil servant
on a power trip. Witness the fellow who was the subject of a mass
assault by ten thugs with machine guns because a paramedic thought
he was rude and made it a personal mission to teach him a lesson.
This was over a kid that everybody agrees had an accidental fall,
and exhibited no evidence of lasting damage from the fall.

[MBZ] 123 coupe electrical confusion

2008-01-07 Thread Luther - laptop
Subject car: '82 300CD
The fuse for the right front markerlight, right tail light, dash lights,
and headlight warning buzzer (key buzzer works fine) has blown 4 times in
the last 6 months. The most recent time was about 3 weeks ago (or so I
thought...). Last night I opened my door and the buzzer sounded at me.
WHAA? Tonight all lights are working as intended. I'm totally
confused at this. It's also dawned on me that my radio reception might be
diminished when the dash/marker/tail system is not working. It blows a
brand new copper alloy fuse just as easily as the crappy aluminum fuses I
am using until the problem is resolved.

Any ideas?? TIA all.

Depends on fuel and how you drive. I was getting 33-36mpg depending

[MBZ] Best battery for 300D

2008-01-07 Thread Lee Einer

Hi, all -

It is another cold winter here in northeastern New Mexico, and the
battery on the wife's 300CD has again taken a crap. It shows as fully
charged when I hook up the charger, but there are no cold cranking amps
and it won't turn the engine over fast enough to get it going.

So now I must ask - last year, the same thing happened and I went to
Auto Zone and bought what I was told was their best for cold cranking
amps. Their best turned out to be garbage. What do you all recommend for
the best, no holds barred get it started in the winter battery?

Measure the voltage across the posts while someone engages the starter make
sure you are measuring at the posts themselves, not the cable ends. If the
battery voltage stays above 9 volts then your issue is elsewhere.

Re: [MBZ] OT: more furnace woes

2008-01-07 Thread Allan Streib
I was hopeful about Graingers, but their nearest outlet is 50 miles
away. Went to their web site and found the motor but in the process
of checking out I found out that they don't want to do consumer sales
either. So I'd have to fake being a business, which would almost
certainly work but I don't like having to lie just to buy a motor.
What's the big deal about not selling to DIY folks? Do they not want
to piss off the tradespeople?

Then I found Electric Motor Warehouse
(www.electricmotorwarehouse.com) who had no quibble about selling
directly to me and had the exact A.O. Smith blower motor that I
pulled out of the the furnace. Their price was a few bucks more than
Grainger but they include a new capacitor which pretty much accounts
for the difference. I also got a new mounting bracket and rubber
bushings because the old bushings looked tired.

From what I've read (a day too late of course), it sounds like
probably the capacitor was bad. Putting in a whole new motor is
expensive insurance but I've already got the old one out, and I'd
rather not tear into that furnace again anytime soon I swear every
piece of sheet metal has been sharpened to a razor edge. Also the
motor was getting really hot to the touch in just a few minutes, and
had probably been doing that for up to a week (MIL was out of town
and returned to a cold house) so who knows what all has had the life
cooked out of it.
