Fortunately the mk3 has a steel oil pan and while its lower than my 190D I

When I painted my MB, 911 and MGB, I bought a lot of stuff from these
guys www.autobodytoolmart.com. I highly recommend the 3M stuff. It is
all excellent. It's also a good idea to create a relationship with a
local shop that sells paint lke PPG to the public/hobbyist -- they
know all the tricks and the best products.

For instructions on color sanding / Buffing I suggest a google search
for color sanding and there will be all kinds of videos showing
different techniques.

I'm a big fan of Griots Garage and i believe their website has videos
also but IMO their stuff is pretty pricey and not better than 3M. But I
cannot resist buying their stuff sometimes. ;-)

It is better/safer to use a DA buffer as it is less possible to burn
through the paint. You might consider putting masking tape on edges as
they usually have the thinnest paint and will burn thru easily.

I also have a 6 buffer and if using foam pads I learned how to buff and
not burn thru - but you are much more likely to burn thru with a
standard flat sander/buffer. But large flat areas you will probably be
OK...

Good luck -

The SE had a kacked up hood. Pine sap had eaten the clear away and into the

Chemicals like isopropyl or other mild solvents did not reduce the cratering

worked up from 1500 to 5000 grit and turned the hood into an opaque disaster.

That done, I washed it up and the wet made it look pretty good. So, I got out
the Griot #1 polish and put that on it with the RA. Then worked up to #3
polish, followed by the sealant. It went from heavy damage to very shiny black
paint. The pitting is still noticeable, but that is just white spots from
paint damage. The surface is smooth as an infants posterior. The owner will
eventually have to do a repaint, but for now, the car looks good enough.

i sent a box of about 20lbs to toronto today on standard.  shipping was
only 37 bucks.  55 with insurance.  i have to think this is a mistake, but
i was told it is expected to be delivered on tuesday

that's a lot cheaper and faster on my end than USPS!

a couple of months ago i overnighted a fairly substantial part to canada
via UPS and it was only about 80 dollars and arrived about 16 hours after
it was shipped.

it's impressive although most canadians do not like to be shipped via UPS
as it seems to cost them some additional fees or something

Re: [MBZ] Windshield

2013-09-20 Thread Dan Penoff
This comes up often enough it should be part of an FAQ somewhere

When I was into VW stuff years ago there was a Karmann Ghia guy in Oregon
called House of Ghia that made a lot of reproduction parts. He had a great
article on non-OE rubber parts.

The business has returned since he died a few years ago, but the website does
not have all of his articles.

The best example I have seen is one that Randy Steele of EPS, Ltd. showed me in
person one time.

He had an MB W123 windshield seal and an aftermarket seal. In the lower corners
of the MB seal there were three small lips along the seal groove. The
aftermarket seal has one.

These were almost imperceptible. Had he not shown them to me I would have never
noticed.

This was one example of why aftermarket rubber parts can be substandard but the
differences almost impossible to detect. To add to this, the materials
themselves can be suspect - this is what the House of Ghia guy highlighted.

Really, do you want to save a few bucks to roll the dice? If you are selling
the car I could see it, but if you plan on having it around for any length of
time it's a penny wise/pound foolish situation.

Re: [MBZ] OT but back to diesels

2013-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
For you I'd say a diesel never makes sense, well not never but the current crop
don't make any sense. Maybe in a few years when the Dodge v6s start hitting the
used market (assuming they ever come out).

What Mike calls an advantage in diesels only being in 3/4 ton I call a
disadvantage because the ride will be harsher. Same with more expensive 10ply
tires that don't flex as well so aren't as good offroad.

Pickup trucks are interesting because they all get used differently. My Ranger
spends a lot of time commuting but has hauled 2 cars, dragged snowmobiles all
over, done some serious 4 wheeling (yay limited slip differential!) and hauled
a lot of firewood. Firewood hauling in particular is hard on a truck (if you're
doing it right) because I don't want to drag the wood any farther than I have
to I'll push the truck way back into the woods to load up. Then I've got to
ease out with the trailer hitch dragging on the ground because the truck is
loaded right down. Plus throwing all that wood around beats up the bed...

Realistically you'd be just as well served with a fullsize SUV and trailer as a
pickup but if a pickup makes you happy then thats what you should have...

Sort of an extension of the truck for Jaime thread, but at what point in
terms of use do you folks think a diesel makes sense?

I only run about 12K miles a year on my truck, but of that about 8200
miles will be highway miles this year.
I do regular runs to the lake which is about a 350 mile round trip and
regular runs to North Dakota that would be about 300 miles round trip.
Sometimes I haul or tow but a lot of the time the box is empty and we
are not towing anything.

Most of my travels are in the spring through fall. From November through
March we don't go out to the lake usually.

Around here, the cost of diesel is still lower than gasoline through the
summer.
In winter, it is usually higher than gasoline.

I keep trying to talk myself into a diesel pickup.
So far I have resisted.

[MBZ] OT: Truck for Jamie

2013-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm in New England but close enough to the ocean it doesn't get all that cold
for all that long. We'll hit -20F one morning every other year or so. I've been
driving a diesel car for the past 10 years and the only time I had trouble with
not having enough interior heat was the time the fan died on the way to work.
That was a cold ride...
Mike is in upstate New York, probably colder there than here.

There must be plenty of working type people around you with diesel trucks and
of course all semi-trucks are diesels. If they didn't have cabin heat people
wouldn't use them. You must see the grill blockers around a lot. At one point
Ford made cool (well I thought they were cool) plastic inserts for the grills
on their trucks. This would have been in the '90s when the grill had big holes.
You could put in as many inserts as you needed to keep the engine warm. Pretty
invisible in use unlike a blanket or piece of cardboard.

I suspect one big advantage in more recent years is higher temp thermostats,
the engine is producing heat, as long as you're not wasting it out to the
radiator you'll be able to have it in the cab.

[MBZ] OT but back to diesels

2013-09-20 Thread MG
In your situation I would have gone for a diesel a long time ago.
I live a bit over 20 miles out of town where we work and go
shopping. Went to a diesel for myself over 20 years ago, full
size van. Wife still has gas because a new small truck with
diesel is not available and she needs reliability. If any of the
car companies that sell small diesel trucks (all of them) could
get their shit together and sell one here we would have one for her.

Re: [MBZ] Computer question

2013-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Your mistake here is thinking PCI and PCI Express are the same thing. They
aren't.

PCI Express is also known as PCIe, its a much smaller slot. You'll want a PCIe
card.

Your other mistake is overusing the word modem. The only time its appropriate
in your whole email is DSL Modem. Every other time you used it you meant
network card.

A friends Dell P6754yPC desktop computer won't connect to the internet.  I
fixed the TCP/IP but now Window7 says the rj45 modem is bad  (the wireless
modem works okay).  There's a lot of lightning in this area that often takes
out internal modems.
Since the rj45 modem is part of the motherboard, I'm wondering if I can
simply use an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter - PCI - 1 x RJ-45 -
10/100/1000Base-T - Internal modem or equivalent?  This computer is
connected to a DSL modem.

The long motherboard socket where the Intel modem would plug in has one
notch.  The Intel modem has two notches.
Motherboard description lists these slots, one of which is in use by a
wireless modem.

1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card
3 PCI Express x1 slots
1 PCI Express x1 minicard slot

Modem description says:

Compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 full-height and low-profile PCI Express
slots

Thanks,
Gerry

There's a long list of fees.
Basic entry prep on a $101 (with shipping) order is $29.
Then there's a minimum $6 bond fee, a $15 low value shipment amendment
(unless something is delayed ten days, then it's $50), and a $4.25 COD fee
for collecting the money.

i sent a box of about 20lbs to toronto today on standard. shipping was
only 37 bucks.

[MBZ] UPS is fast and cheap to canada

Gary,
I ship to Canada several times during the year and especially during the
Christmas season. While UPS may seem cheaper, they will PO your customers
because both they and Fedex charge large brokerage fees to simply complete a
form. The USPS does not do this. Therefore, in total USPS is cheaper for your
customer. Normally, I only use USPS for international shipping. The tracking is
good, claims good, and ship time is reasonable. I also only take PayPal for
international shipping as the credit cards get into conversion rates, etc. and
cost more.

What Mike calls an advantage in diesels only being in 3/4 ton I call a
disadvantage because the ride will be harsher. Same with more expensive
10ply tires that don't flex as well so aren't as good offroad.

Pickup trucks are interesting because they all get used differently. My
Ranger spends a lot of time commuting but has hauled 2 cars, dragged
snowmobiles all over, done some serious 4 wheeling (yay limited slip
differential!) and hauled a lot of firewood. Firewood hauling in particular
is hard on a truck (if you're doing it right) because I don't want to drag
the wood any farther than I have to I'll push the truck way back into the
woods to load up. Then I've got to ease out with the trailer hitch dragging
on the ground because the truck is loaded right down. Plus throwing all
that wood around beats up the bed...

Realistically you'd be just as well served with a fullsize SUV and trailer
as a pickup but if a pickup makes you happy then thats what you should
 have...

Your mistake here is thinking PCI and PCI Express are the same thing. They
aren't.
PCI Express is also known as PCIe, its a much smaller slot. You'll want a
PCIe card.
Your other mistake is overusing the word modem. The only time its
appropriate in your whole email is DSL Modem. Every other time you used it
you meant network card.

Compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 full-height and low-profile PCI Express
slots

Thanks,

Well it's not so much that it's not subtle. It's that in all the

right on the the exact set ft/second rather then being OK with

Re: [MBZ] UPS is fast and cheap to canada

2013-09-20 Thread Randy Bennell

One can do the brokerage thing, but is is a pain and takes time etc so,
unless one is into doing it on a regular basis, hardly seems worth it -
which is what the couriers want.
I bought a double roller timing chain set for a small block Ford a few
years back from an online supplier in the USA.
By the time I paid the couier brokerage fees etc, I had paid about 2 o 3
times what I would have paid for it here.

A lesson learned.

Fortunately, I live close enough to the US border to go to ND about monthly.
I have items shipped to people who act as a middle man near the border.
They receive and hold packages for the sum of $5 and send me an email
when things arrive.

I pick them up on my jaunts to ND and bring them accross the border myself.
Usually no duty but i have to pay the sales taxes at the Canadian
Customs office.

The reason people here like the post office to deliver is that the post
office has a flat $5 fee so no huge brokerage costs and often they seem
to ignore the sales taxes and sometimes the whole thing and just drop
off the package with no extra charges.

Well, free trade is loosening things up a bit but there still are
duties payable depending on what one buys etc.
For example, if we go to ND and buy good and show up at the border with
them to import them into Canada, we will pay PST and GST on the value
if we go for a day trip.
If we stay in the USA for 48 hours we get an exemption but not for a day
trip.
If we bring back items that are made in the USA, Canada, or Mexico,
there is no duty chargable.
If we bring back items from the USA that originate in China, there will
be potentially duty imposed.
Often the border folks don't bother to charge the duty but theoretically
they should and if we brought in a significant dollar value of the
goods, no doubt would.

I assume the same thing happens in reverse. If you bring things into the
USA from Canada that are made offshore, the USA customs folk will likely
charge you duty.

The brokerage is essentially the process of filling out the papers,
collecting the duties, if there are any, and submitting the papers and
monies to the government.

2013-09-20 Thread Dan Penoff
And I believe that in many cases the decision to charge one for duties and fees
is arbitrary and up to the Customs officer.

I say this because there were numerous times I traveled outside the US and
brought back items worth well over the $400 limit. I always listed EVERYTHING I
bought overseas on my Customs declaration, a few times having to use more than
one form, and not once was I ever required to pay duties.

On one occasion I returned from a trip to Calgary and Edmonton with a very
expensive animation cel I purchased at a gallery in Calgary that belonged to
the wife of one of my customers. It was well over $400 and was BIG - probably
3' x 4' boxed, and I carried it on, too.

I fully expected to have to pay duties on it, as I declared it for the full
value with a copy of the invoice.

When I cleared Customs in Calgary, the Customs officer took my form, swiped it
with a marker, and waved me through.

Well, free trade is loosening things up a bit but there still are duties

For example, if we go to ND and buy good and show up at the border with them
to import them into Canada, we will pay PST and GST on the value if we go
 for a day trip.
If we stay in the USA for 48 hours we get an exemption but not for a day trip.
If we bring back items that are made in the USA, Canada, or Mexico, there is
 no duty chargable.
If we bring back items from the USA that originate in China, there will be
 potentially duty imposed.
Often the border folks don't bother to charge the duty but theoretically they
should and if we brought in a significant dollar value of the goods, no
 doubt would.

I assume the same thing happens in reverse. If you bring things into the USA
from Canada that are made offshore, the USA customs folk will likely charge

The brokerage is essentially the process of filling out the papers,
collecting the duties, if there are any, and submitting the papers and monies
 to the government.

[MBZ] OT: For coffee lovers

2013-09-20 Thread Craig
I recently ran across this:

Johann Sebastian Bach loved coffee; he considered it one of the great
joys of his busy and active life. When Bach died, his personal
possessions included at least two coffee pots, one of silver and
another of brass, as well as several coffee services. Bach frequented
the coffee houses in Leipzig and, on occasion, wrote a “secular”
cantata for the enjoyment of his friends. The cantata was a brief
oratorio for, usually, four voices. Bach wrote scores of these for
use in the morning services at his church –- perhaps the best known
is his expansion of Luther’s, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” -– but
he also penned a fair number of cantatas that had no overtly
 spiritual purpose.

One of the most delightful of these is the “Coffee Cantata”, a
little drama relating a dispute between a father and his daughter,
who loved coffee. Her father insisted that she stop drinking coffee
and get married. The wily waif went out and brought back for her
father the village idiot, professing her love and intending to marry
him. Astonished, the father rejected her plans (just as she knew he
would) and insisted that he would find her a proper husband. Great!
She agreed to his proposal on one condition: the husband he secured
for her had to allow her to drink coffee. You can guess who got her
 way in the end.

He also wrote a cantata about drinking. I recall, while in the Caltech
Glee Club, of closing one performance with,

Tenor: And now I think we've had enough; 'tis thirsty work this singing!

Baritone: Quite true; 'tis time to be gone!

Chorus: And now to town we go
to spend an hour or so
in drinking.

Getting an estimate from my shop today and my ins co is looking at it also,

After seeing what happened to Wilton, I was just wondering if I should seize

I haven't driven across since they started requiring a passport. The last time
would have been 2007 I guess. We were at camp and decided to go to the casino
in Pert-Andover. On the way over the Canadian guys ask where we're going
Lucky's to which they reply Leave all your money we all laugh and head on
through.
On the way back the guy walks all the way around the Jeep (my parent's but I'm
driving) then says Muddy Jeep. I keep my yap shut since he hasn't asked a
question Real muddy Jeep. Now he's staring at me but I can stare back and act
stupid with the best of them. Finally he says Well? and I say Well what? He
takes our IDs and asks where we're from and is completely flabbergasted that my
wife and I have MA driver's licenses but both my parents have Maine. Then he's
totally shocked that my wife and mother were both born in MA while my dad and I
were born in the same hospital not 10 miles from where we now sit. He just
can't process that none of us actually live in Caribou but we own a camp there.

Finally after maybe 10 minutes of him asking us over and over if we're sure we
know where we live and where we were born his supervisor comes and looks over
his shoulder (zero other vehicles have been anywhere near us during this time,
the Fort Fairfield border crossing isn't real busy) and after another couple
minutes takes our IDs from the first guy, hands them to me and although the
first guy is still talking says You folks have a nice day now. The other guy
shuts up and we drive off...

Back in the teens and '20s International Harvester offered shutters on tractors
setup to burn kerosene. Extra heat was required at the intake manifold to
vaporize the kerosene (which was really stove oil not what we think of as
kerosene). Later models I believe had some kind of thermostat system to open

So what causes the [cruise] surge cycle in the engine?

It is when the PID loop in the CC amplifier gets out of
whack with respect to the mechanical response characteristics
of the car.

Yeah. Usually I've found it to be bad solder joints within
the amplifier, causing it to react inappropriately to external
stimuli. The servo motors can develop a bad spot on their
position feedback potentiometer, or there can be sticky
mechanisms. But it's usually the amp.

There must be plenty of working type people around you with diesel trucks
and of course all semi-trucks are diesels. If they didn't have cabin heat
people wouldn't use them. You must see the grill blockers around a lot. At
one point Ford made cool (well I thought they were cool) plastic inserts
for the grills on their trucks. This would have been in the '90s when the
grill had big holes. You could put in as many inserts as you needed to keep
the engine warm. Pretty invisible in use unlike a blanket or piece of
 cardboard.

I suspect one big advantage in more recent years is higher temp
thermostats, the engine is producing heat, as long as you're not wasting it
out to the radiator you'll be able to have it in the cab.

Well folks, it finally happened!  My 1990 350SDL rod bender with 278k and a
repair history similar to Wilton's (my head gasket was at ~125k but still on
the original trans) was rear-ended by a school bus!

Getting an estimate from my shop today and my ins co is looking at it also, as
is the bus co's ins. Have full collision and comp, yet, so I don't know how the
numbers work out or if its a total.

After seeing what happened to Wilton, I was just wondering if I should seize

Just PO'ed right now.

Well, free trade is loosening things up a bit but there still are
duties payable depending on what one buys etc.
For example, if we go to ND and buy good and show up at the border with
them to import them into Canada, we will pay PST and GST on the value if
we go for a day trip.
If we stay in the USA for 48 hours we get an exemption but not for a day
 trip.
If we bring back items that are made in the USA, Canada, or Mexico, there
 is no duty chargable.
If we bring back items from the USA that originate in China, there will be
 potentially duty imposed.
Often the border folks don't bother to charge the duty but theoretically
they should and if we brought in a significant dollar value of the goods,
 no doubt would.

Every other time you used it
you meant network card.

i was told it is expected to be delivered on tuesday

that's a lot cheaper and faster on my end than USPS!

a couple of months ago i overnighted a fairly substantial part to

after
it was shipped.

it's impressive although most canadians do not like to be shipped via

I have never been there, but my good wife has an uncle and aunt who have
lived in Keene NH.
Cannot recall where they are now as they have moved back and forth
between NH and VT a number of times.
I hear that they are about to move into a condo that is sponsored by
Harvard for old grads somewhere out there so am assuming they are likely
moving to somewhere closer to Boston.

There is a 2-pin connector on the mono valve. One pin is always hot (+12v
whenever the car is powered up). The other pin is grounded by the ACC
system to stop the flow of coolant through the heater core. You can test
 the mono valve by applying 12v to the one pin and grounding the other pin;
that should close the valve. But just measuring the voltage at the
connector could be misleading. One lead will read 12v but the other may read
zero even if it's just floating (not grounded).

I bought a double roller timing chain set for a small block Ford a few
years back from an online supplier in the USA.
By the time I paid the couier brokerage fees etc, I had paid about 2 o 3
times what I would have paid for it here.
 A lesson learned.

Fortunately, I live close enough to the US border to go to ND about
 monthly.
I have items shipped to people who act as a middle man near the border.
They receive and hold packages for the sum of $5 and send me an email when
 things arrive.
I pick them up on my jaunts to ND and bring them accross the border myself.
Usually no duty but i have to pay the sales taxes at the Canadian Customs
 office.

The reason people here like the post office to deliver is that the post
office has a flat $5 fee so no huge brokerage costs and often they seem to
ignore the sales taxes and sometimes the whole thing and just drop off the
 package with no extra charges.
