In my experience the tire with the wider footprint (here the

different tread compound in the winter tire helps offset the effect,

float on the surface and spin. I would go for as narrow a winter

My understanding is that the CO2 is supposed to mostly bond
with what they are injecting it into. Or at least that's the plan
locally where they are injecting an underlying coal seam as part of a
coal bed methane extraction project. If it all works they will
enhance the methane production (this is the "damp gas" of the old
days which is being captured now rather than vented) and sequester
some CO2 in the process. Here is a slide show on the project:

Isn't CO2 fairly stable?
i.e. how will it bond to anything if it is quite stable already?

I am told he coal surface is more attractive to the CO2 than
the methane that is there now. The displaced methane is sucked out.

One of the more interesting effects of the procedure is that
the CO2 injected coal seam expands significantly, something on the
order of 10% by the time it has reached its holding capacity of
CO2. They have installed several dozen super precise tilt meters in
the local injection area to see if they can detect the size and shape
of the bulge at the surface.

The local sequestration project is about a $13 million deal,
80% funded by tax money.

[MBZ] 126 rubber bushing removal - success!

2011-02-20 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore

Some of you may remember a couple months ago I wrote of my
efforts to remove a front suspension bushing on my 83 300SD. I have
attached the picture I sent then, showing the cage of sash weights
hanging from the bushing. No joy.

As it happened shortly the weather turned cold. I don't drive
the MB in the winter anyway so I left it on the stands for warmer
weather tinkering. A few days ago I checked it and found the bushing
had emerged perhaps an eighth inch. Levering and prying yielded no
more. I added more weights for a total of 90 pounds. The next day
when I checked it had come out! That is what is shown in the second
picture. Rubber is weird stuff. This bushing had been partially
degraded by diesel fuel leaking on it.

The last picture shows my homemade hole puller device I have
found useful for such situations. Squeezing the U - shaped wire
until the bent ends come together allows it to go into the hole in
the bushing. Released they will spring out. To keep the ends spread
inside the bushing it is usually best to tap in something like the
wooden plug shown. Then you have a loop you can pull on.

[MBZ] Fwd: OT Farm Tractor For Sale in WV

Thought I would give you fellows the first chance at my grand
old IH 674D with IH 2255 loader. This machine has given me good
service for 20 years.

The first owner parked it outside on a hill above a steel mill
for 15 years. Hence the lack of original paint. His widow said
he had planned to build a shed for it but was always working
overtme at the mill.

Spear, bucket, weight rack, tire chains, manuals. 4400
hours. The engine is worn - low oil pressure after two
hours. $3500. 304 686 3797.

Needs a sleeve kit, maybe a cam bearing or such if you want to
work it all day in hot weather. I have reduced the price
accordingly, compared to the more typical $6000 - $8000 for a
pretty one of this model. DIY and you will have a good old tractor
cheap. Can deliver if you are within 150 miles.

[MBZ] Cheap preglow relay fix

2010-11-04 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore

Recently when I went to start my 83 SD I had no dash glow
light and the engine wouldn't fire. I traced the problem to the
preglow relay (black plastic box about 3"X3"X"2" on the fender
behind driver's side headlight). There was voltage accross the 80
amp strip fuse but nothing was getting to the glow plugs.

I took off the relay, removed the 4 screws at its edges and
slid the contents out. A solenoid and a circuit board which looked
mostly OK except for two little canisters that had leaked out beige
goo. Brother Rusty prices this relay at $189.

When I googledpregow relay bypass I found some have
replaced it with a fender mounted starter relay of the Ford type
actuated by momentary contact button switch. The attached pictures
show my adaptation of this approach - I left the original relay there
to use the wiring connecters and 80 amp fuse. (Before I put it back
together I rigged it so it would always be on.)

$14.99 for the solenoid, $4.99 for the switch, both from
Autozone. You lose the dash light function. But it is easy to start
counting seconds when you hear that SNACK sound.

[MBZ] 126 rubber bushing removal

2010-11-27 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore

The other day I noticed what at first I thought was a stick
hanging from under the front of my 83 300SD. In fact in turned out
to be a strand of a rubber body mount that had degraded from a long
term soaking of diesel fuel The cause was a slow leak in the
cigar hose return line above it. The slightly uphill and tilted
position where the car was parked put the forward mount of the
driver side brake support strut carrier in a place of
saturation. The rubber bushing appeared to have turned into black jello.

R and R of this bushing is set forth on p. 320 of Vol. 1 of
the 126 service manual. It involves removal of the brake strut and
carrier mount. Then clamping the carrier in a vice and use of a
special tool to press out and in the bushing.

That seemed a bit more than necessary in this
case. Instead, I have run the car up on ramps and am attempting to
pull out the bushing in place as shown in an attached picture. Those
are sash weights in a cradle of fence wire. I have been adding
weights for several days. 50 lbs for the last 24 hours with no
movement. I tried modest application of heat from a propane torch
with no result. (It is a scary place to use an open flame,
especially after a fuel leak.) I guess the next step is to try to
drill out some of the rubber to weaken it.

The fact that the bushing is in there so firmly makes me
think the rubber hidden in the carrier is still viable. So I am
thinking I may just put the bolt back in it and try running it a
while to see if anything loosens up. Anyone BTDT? Any tricks
for rubber bushing removal? Thanks.

I remember doing the counter holding and penetrating oil tricks

galvanic corrosion between the aluminum fitting and the steel hose

be badly pitted. I couldn't get it to not seep oil at the lower
cooler connection. I bought a second hand oil cooler by mail and
found the lower fitting corroded in the same way. Salt spray I
guess. Finally just slathered JB Weld on what was left of the
threads of the original cooler fitting and that stopped the
leak. (And now I have a spare cooler for next time.)

[MBZ] OT 12v dc to 120v ac heating element?

One of you technical guys must know this.

Say you get your diesel tractor suck in the woods a long way
from the 120 volt ac outlet that would normally power its 800 watt
engine preheater. Night is coming. It will be very cold in the
morning when you return with chains, come-a-longs, etc. to extract
the tractor. Let's say you happen to have a charged 12v car battery
that could carried to the scene. If the + and - poles of the battery
were wired into the slots of the 120 v ac plug would the heater work
without damaging anything? Would it warm the engine up in 20 or 30
minutes like it does on 120 v ac?

I tried researching this on the web but all I get is a lot of
talk about the right size inverter needed. Would an inverter be
required just to run a resistance element? Anyone BTDT? Thanks.

You don't need but two pedals - brake and accelerator.

Begin with the engine off. Shift into low (you will find you
can do this without using the clutch). Use the starter motor to get
rolling and start the engine at the same time. Speed up the engine,
then let up on the accelerator until there is no load on the
engine. You will find the gear lever now can be moved to
neutral. Lower the engine speed to be what is right for the vehicle
speed in second gear. Gently slide the gear lever into
second. Proceed through the other gears in the same manner. Of
course in downshifting you will be temporarily speeding the engine in
neutral to match the gear speeds.

Just remember to shift into neutral before you stop. Then, to
get going again turn off the engine, shift into low and use the
starter motor.

I did this for some years with a heavy farm truck. Didn't seem
to hurt it.

watercooled cars--944, 924S, even the 924-- goes that cheap.

The couple of 928s I drove felt heavy and tank like compared to
the 924S I was driving at the time. I have been told that is because
I was not going fast enough - that the 928 was designed for 100+ mph

The 928 shape suggests a shark to its fans, a toad to its

who were fixated on the air cooled rear engine. And Porsche never
promoted the 928 for racing which might have given it more of a

If I wanted performance I would go for a 944 turbo. Otherwise a 968.

Certainly that would provide the right incentive. My
experience has been that people learn the gear/speed matching part of
driving without a clutch pretty quickly since that is what is
normally happening anyway.

The tricky part is getting going again after you have had to
stop. You must remember to shift into neutral before you stop. Then
when you are ready to go, turn off the engine. You will find you can
shift into low without the clutch if the engine is off. Get moving
again by using the starter motor. The starter motor will both move
the vehicle and start the engine at the same time.

[MBZ] Somewhat OT - In praise of old alternator shops

2011-07-12 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
My farm tractor refused to start the other day after a break
from mowing hay. Ratti tat tat was all the starter would do. Which
meant a couple mile hike back to the house to get a vehicle to jump
start it. This gave me time to contemplate Dr. Booth's wisdom on
batteries; a new one every five years will keep you from being
stranded. This one was nine years old, $150 and the heaviest battery
I have lifted in my 71 years.

Two days later it happened again. Fortunately it was at home
this time. Sure enough, no output from the alternator. I had used
up that new battery charge in starts and running the cab AC. So I
jump started it again and didn't shut it down until I had finished
with the hay.

So by now it is Sunday and only new-age parts stores like
AutoZone are open. I have seen them test alternators there. Will
they test mine? No. They were very young and friendly about it but
explained they had no "specs" on it so they couldn't test it.

The next day I went to a traditional alternator/starter rebuild
place where a middle aged man quickly tested it, found it working and
explained how the wiring to the dash light was likely at fault. He
explained how i could jury rig it temporarily. No charge. Like most
of these places everything was dark and there were boxes of used
machine parts. These guys can unzip an alternator so fast you can
barely follow it. These are men to trust.

[MBZ] OT Cheap bearings and jobs

2011-09-05 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
I was surprised recently to discover how inexpensive ball
bearings have become.

I needed two bearings to fix a piece of farm equipment. I have
learned it is is better not to go to the original equipment dealer
for bearings since they charge a premium for a name on a box that
contains a generic bearing. Instead, I usually go to a store (for
some reason called a "bearing house") that specializes in
bearings. You just slap the bearing on the counter and some old guy
matches it to one he has in stock.

Well, unfortunately, you can't do that in Wheeling WV any
more. On a hunch I had called first and I was told the business was
sold and moved to some place in Ohio about two hours from
me. Alternatives were as far away. Wheeling is one hour.

I was guessing the dealer would want $50.00. Just for fun I
checked MSC's web site - the bearing I wanted (SKF 6207 2RS) was
$37.42. (This is a common Metric 35X72X17 sealed ball
bearing.) When I Googled the SKF number up jumped many vendors
wanting to sell cheaper than $37.42. Since these bearings would be
going into an item that already had a couple thousand hours on it and
the bearings were fairly easy to get to, I chose a vendor that
advertised bearings equal to the SKF in load rating - 25,000 N
dynamic and 15,000 static. The winning vendor was vxb.com. $7.77
each. They have ten ways to ship, from $0.00 (pick it up yourself at
their outlet in Los Angeles) to $90 something for next day air. I
chose the "take your time" at $5.00. This turned out to be the USPS
which took 4 days.

The bearings (labeled CXJSD) looked and felt right and tapped
in with about the same force it took to remove the SKF ones. I put
it all back together and used it two hours. OK so far.

I have mixed feelings about all this. I suppose in my own
little way I have contributed to the loss of local jobs. But if the
Asian countries can make quality stuff this cheap I think we would be
better off doing something else. In fact, we are doing something
else locally - a shale gas boom that has brought lots of jobs and
money. But I guess not as much need for a bearing house as there
used to be. And it had a high Victorian ceiling and a worn hardwood floor.

[MBZ] Odd behavior of radio in 83 300SD

2013-08-14 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore

I bet one of you experts knows the answer to this mystery.

When I remove the negative cable from the battery on my 83 SD,
reconnect it, and then turn the ignition key to on, the radio blares
out loud static even though it was off to begin with. I turn off the
radio and everything is normal. Is it supposed to act this way? I
can't find anything about it in the manual.

By way of background, I have noticed that if I don't drive the
car for two weeks the battery charge goes down to below 12.0
volts. I haven't got around to working the trick of pulling one fuse
at a time to see where the charge is leaking. I don't drive the car
much so I thought for the time being I would just disconnect the
battery when parked in the barn. I suspect current is leaking
because when reconnecting the cable in low light I can see a spark
when it touches the battery post. Does the automatic static sound
from the radio indicate the radio is the problem? The radio is
original. The battery is 5 years old.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know the answer as to how many cans you would
need. Perhaps you should call them with information about the
capacities of your car's system. The usual approach involves
reaching certain pressures as measured by a set of gauges.

I ordered from them a year or two ago. I got the R-12 top up
kit described at the bottom of the page at the above
address. My Porsche 968 had gradually lost R-12 over a 20 year
period - the sight glass was showing just occasional foam and the
cooling barely perceptible. I added a can of stopleak and one can
of their ES-12. Bubbles in the sight glass ceased and the cooling
came back. Still working well.

I had read good things about ES products at www.968forums.com
. As I recall there were some oddities about the ES refrigerant. At
least at one time they were not recommending it for a complete refill
nor did they recommend pulling a vacuum on the system. Again, calling
them about your situation probably would be best.

[MBZ] OT - What to do with leftover battery acid?

2013-01-22 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
I seem to remember someone in this group one time recommending
using acid to improve the soil for growing potatoes. Can anyone
provide details on the procedure? Or perhaps it was a joke. In any
case I have between 3 and 4 gallons of battery acid I'd like to be
rid of. I have googled the subject and found many safety warnings -
such as always adding acid to water, not the other way around - but I
am coming up short on uses for it outside of lead acid
batteries. And it appears batteries nowadays come already filled
with acid and sealed.

The story is that last summer I rolled my farm tractor and
hurt my elbow in the process. By the time the elbow had recovered
enough to run a chain saw to free the tractor it had spent about
three weeks on its side, draining half the acid out of each battery
cell. Judging from the size of the battery I figured I would need 3
- 5 quarts to replenish it.. While at my local NAPA getting some
other parts I found quart containers of battery acid were about $5
each and they had only 2. But they would sell me a 5 gallon
container for I think it was $32. So that is what I bought and used
about 1 1/2 gallons. It is in a heavy cardboard box with a plastic
liner that collapses as the acid is drained out by an attached hose.

I have the box sitting up on a dry shelf in the equipment
shed. I have never before needed battery acid and I don't anticipate
needing it again. I don't want it to leak as the result of
accident. Nor do I want stolen by some crazy person like the one
that attacked the school children in Connecticut. Any suggestions as
to what to do with it? Thanks.

hung up off road.

Mine is a budget model with a manual 4 X 4 shift. Just pull
back on the lever on the hump. Obviously, going into low range
requires stopping first. I have the old fashioned 4.3 iron V6 which
seems to me to have plenty of power. I get 15 mpg around the farm,
20 on the highway.

There is fierce price competition on the basic work truck
models, especially if you are a cash buyer who shows up at the end of
the month interested in one they already have on the lot.

The lack of insulation makes for old house charm. :-)

Back then fiber glass didn't exist. In some rural areas, houses were
clapboard siding, studs, and tongue and groove or simply pine boards on the
inside with a tin roof. Exterior clapboards may never have been painted.
Wood stove inside, possibly serving double duty as a stove. The ground
level floor could have been supported with slabbed tree trunks, leveled
with a bottle.

Sounds about like our WV house when my wife and I arrived in
1981. There was no insulation. The walls were leaky clapboards
tacked on top of what a neighbor called "Yankee board". This is a
double layer of rough cut vertical boards.

In this system you start construction by nailing together a
floor grid of 2 X 4s balanced on stone piles. The walls are
made by laying boards on the ground side by side, then laying
another layer of boards on top to cover the cracks and nailing the
two together. A row of people lift up what amounts to a board curtain
and walk it up to become a wall of the house. It is propped in place
while other walls are similarly made, tipped up, and the corners
nailed. The top of the walls are notched for 2 X 4s that form the
roof. More boards on that and then galvanized metal. Holes are cut
for store bought doors and windows. All lumber must be fresh from
the mill since only green hardwood can be nailed without drilling.

When we got the place it was leaning a bit here and there but
basically sound after 60-80 years. So we added another layer in the
form of salvaged 2 X 4s attached horizontally to the outside by 60d
nails driven from the inside. That gave us some room for insulation
and then board and batten on top of that. It has been great.

suited for reloading your own ammunition. I can't understand why
auto-loaders are popular, outside of competitive target shooting
where they make timed and rapid fire events easier.

Here's my introduction to pistol shooting story. When I was a
kid the only firearm in the house was my father's !911 .45 ACP which
he kept in the bedroom dresser drawer. I was about 8 and my brother
11 when he finally gave in to our pestering and agreed to show us how
to shoot it. It was loud, it kicked, and none of us could hit a tin
can much more than 10 feet away. What a bummer. My uncle, who was
also present, let us shoot his S&W K38 target revolver. What a
revelation! Since then I have fired many thousands of rounds in
handguns, but only under duress do I use auto-loaders. I urge all
you handguners to try at least one quality target revolver before
your shooting days are over.

[MBZ] OT - WV taxes and winters

2013-01-30 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
I should have mentioned when I wrote recently about the
$.23/acre real estate tax that it is just surface rights we own. The
mineral rights were separated and sold long ago. The mineral owner
(I think it is CONSOL in our case) is also paying taxes on "our"
parcels and although I don't have the numbers I am sure it is more
than we pay. Rights to the gas alone are now selling for five times
the surface rights on timber land.

Someone mentioned that states with low real estate taxes
typically make it up by higher taxes in other areas. We do have a WV
income tax. My wife (who does the taxes) tells me for most people it
is about 4 - 6 % of their adjusted income. What with the various
deductions for being over 65 etc., we haven't paid anything for the
last several years - this year we will pay big because we sold a
pipeline ROW through part of our farm. WV also has a sales tax - 6%
on everything except food which is 3%. WV taxes road vehicles as
personal property. Here are the five vehicles we have and WV's
valuations of them:

1983 Mercedes 300SD $120
1987 Ford F700 dump $120
1992 Porsche 968$4725
2008 Chev P/U$8085
2009 Mazda CX-7 $9225

They taxed us a total of $497 for those last year. We have
farm equipment worth more on which they don't collect taxes at
all. So I guess the bottom line is that if you are old and low
income this is a cheap place to live even if you have real estate.

About the winters here. In WV it depends a lot on
elevation. Folks at 3000+ above sea level get much more snow and
cold than we do. Our house is at 1400, the hill tops about 1500 and
the valley streams about 900. We get snow, but not for long enough
for people to have skies or snowmobiles. I plowed the lane to the
house with the tractor FEL once so far this year but it really wasn't
needed. Mostly cold rain. It seems a mild winter to me but then
again I grew up in northern Illinois. My wife grew up in Sydney, Aus
so it seems a bit colder than necessary to her.

I have been thinking about this.

Technically it is true about my being an old fart. People in
their 70s fart more than youngsters. I understand it has to do with
the digestive system not working as well as it once did. Something
to look forward to, if you are lucky.

About the piercing and tattoos. My generation was raised to
think that males should not call attention to themselves except
through competence in something or power of some sort. Young
females, in contrast, more often assumed a "look at me"
manner. They didn't have to do, they could just be. However now
young females are expected to be competent and powerful. So I guess
it is fair for everyone to flaunt themselves.

But body jewelry and skin pictures? That seems so unsanitary.
There must be a better way. Something offensive to the older
generation that does not cause us to cringe when seen in a food
service worker or fellow diner. I suggest the next fad be skirts and
high heels for males under 30. Perhaps with fake sidearms to affirm
masculinity. That would allow for showing off, be expensive and
painful, suit the modern urban life style and alarm parents, What
more could one ask?

[MBZ] Air conditioning - venturi vacuum pump

Have any of you a recommendation on this type of vacuum pump

I am planning for the tools I need to work on my own a/cs . I
have an air compressor (with 30 gallon tank) that claims to put out
5.7 cfm @ 90 psi. So perhaps I can get by with something like the
above unit rather than pay several times as much for an electrically
powered pump? The comments on the a/c sites vary a lot. I was
hoping some of you trustworthy fellows had experience with such like.

Also I am looking for thoughts on what I guess are the
hydrocarbon substitutes for R 134, such as Envirosafe and Freeze
12. I tried some Envirosafe in a 20 year old Porsche R12 system last
year and it is working well so far.

My most pressing need is to activate the (up until now R 134)
system in my cab tractor before hay season starts in June. The
compressor locked up last fall. I have a new compressor and dryer,
and a set of a/c gauges.

My 83 300SD was converted to R 134 by a dealer's shop about 12
years ago. It is still working but the compressor is getting rumbly.

If your luck is like mine the used one won't seal due to

I didn't know chain saws could be rented. That sounds like a
good way to learn about what you might want. Do wear ear muffs and
safety chaps. The rental people probably provide them with the saw.

For the last 32 years I have been using a chain saw a couple
times a week. Mostly cutting up trees that have fallen out into my
fields or across farm roads. I burn 3 or 4 cords to heat my house
and sell another 6 or 8 to long term customers. The Stihl saws have
been the best. For the last 10-15 years I have settled on a pair of
Stihl 026s with 16" bars and Oregon chisel chain I buy in 100' reels
from baileysonline.com. I make the loops with a hand tool. At the
end of the day I clamp the saw in a vice and give each tooth a pass
or two with a file. Every fifth or so sharpening I measure each
tooth with a caliper to make sure they are staying the same length
and I measure each raker with a gauge.

You may not go into it as heavy as I have but you probably will
do more than you think. For example your neighbors may become very
friendly. So you might want to think in terms of eventually getting
a quality saw. They are so much more satisfying to use than the
"homeowner" ones.

[MBZ] Mobil 1 15-50 and valve adjustment OM617

2013-06-27 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
I finally got around to checking the valve adjustment on my 83
300SD. It has been starting well (3 or 4 seconds preglow with my
manual push button system) and sounding good but it had been 31,000
miles since the last adjustment when I bought the car. The manual
says 15,000 mile intervals.

The valves were just a wee bit tight. The intakes (supposed to
be at .10 mm) all passed easily a .068 mm feeler gauge but not a
.103, the nearest I have to what the manual specifies. The exhausts
(supposed to be at .35 mm) all passed a .330 but not a .353. The
adjustments to put them all right were tiny.

I attribute the lack of wear to the use of Mobil 1 15-50
synthetic which I have been changing at 3-4000 mile intervals. I am
planning now to go 50,000 miles before next checking the adjustment,
assuming no hard starting or unusual noises.

[MBZ] OT Kindness of strangers

2012-08-25 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
After reading here lately about unhappiness and coping with
life's problems I thought I should add a cheering note about
unsolicited kindness.

I recently drove to the big city (Wheeling, WV) to visit my
alternator/starter guy. His test showed the alternator OK, which
pretty much pointed to the voltage regulator as the problem with my
F700 truck. He said he couldn't test the regulator but suggested
that for $12.30 a new one (made in China so it has to be good!) would
put me back in business. As usual he was right. Now my firewood
customers will be getting their stuff while the ground is still hard
and I won't be tearing up their yards.

But to me the most interesting thing about the day's events was
how helpful people were. I had a hip fracture operation about seven
weeks ago and was walking with a noticeable limp. Little old ladies
suddenly appeared to hold open doors for me. People carried things
to my pickup when I visited a store. I was quite impressed. Makes
me vow to pay more attention to other people needing help.

Some folks here have these "trail cameras" focused on their
rural mailbox, if it is out of sight of the house. I know the WV and
PA authorities train them on illegal dump sites along back
roads. The electric power and telephone companies use them to catch
thieves trying to steal their property for scrap metal. You don't
want to mess with any such camera, whether on public or private
land. Their owners are very serious.

This is particularly true in the case of hunters. The hunters
I know have these on their own property or land leased for hunting
from farmers like me. The land is posted. Typically there are
multiple cameras, well hidden, looking from different angles at the
same place. My hunters would not be amused by pranksters fooling
with their cameras. Such pranksters, if they were lucky, soon would
be in court facing trespassing and vandalism charges.

[MBZ] OT Vets Day and my thanks to the military

2012-11-12 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
As usual, I smile and accept the thanks bestowed upon me and
other veterans this day. I did my bit with the Army in the early
60's and hated it. But it turned out to be a good thing for me.

By 1960 I had dropped out of school and was starting to learn
many of the things I didn't want to do in life. Like working in a
meat packing plant. Since back then they drafted people, rather than
wait I volunteered. Then I learned of a lot more things I didn't
want to do - such as military life.

When I got out I was ready to go back to school and the GI bill
helped. It went up from I think $90 a month to $130 when I married
another struggling student. That paid the rent for us. There were
more twists and turns but I finally got a BA in 1970. Guess who was
the only outfit to offer me a decent job? Uncle Sam. That extra five
points for being a veteran got me into the Federal Civil
Service. And once on board the veteran's preference meant that in
case of a reduction in force all the non vets would be out the door
before me. That gave me the incentive to lean forward and start
hopping from one agency to another in search of promotions.

And the work (personnel administration) was half way
interesting, especially as I moved up in grade. It came to pass that
when I visited military activities the former lowly E-4 was now
accorded Colonel.status according to their GS conversion
chart. What a life. Except both wife and I found ourselves working
more hours than we wanted. We used some of our new money to buy and
sell a couple houses in the Washington DC area. That allowed us to
bail out of the rat race and live what had become our dream - a hobby
farm in the woods. There were a few more lucky twists and our hobby
farm became a big chunk of timber which has rewarded us in many ways.

All thanks to that honorable discharge from those miserable
years in the military.

[MBZ] OT - Battery charger RIP

2013-12-02 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
Alas, I have I had to replace my battery charger. My good old
3 amp model from W. T. Grant now just makes a faint humming sound and
puts out no current. I took off the cover and looked for something
obviously wrong but it just looks dusty. (I will keep it in case
someone like Dan P or Jim C comes by who probably would know how to
fix it.) Funny the things one remembers. I bought it in 1956 from a
store in downtown Joliet, Illinois. The place had hardwood floors
that were noisy to walk on. It was for a Triumph T110 motorcycle
that was my first legal vehicle.

I thought about asking the list for advice on a new purchase
but found they are so cheap it didn't seem reasonable to bother about
it. For $29.60 from Walmart the new one senses the state of the
battery and adjusts from 6 amps down to trickle charge
automatically. You can't hook it up backwards - it won't work and
tells you of your error. And since I am 73 it won't have last as
long as the first one.

remember one time we drove to DM for a meeting in January and it
turned very cold. It was in a motel parking lot and i knew it would
not start at 20 something below. I took the propane torch and heated
the head until it felt slightly warm to my fingers. Hit the starter,
and it fired right up. I used the propane torch trick on it many
times. Think of it as a propane block heater, only it does not heat
the oil well.

I also tried heating the steel lower oil pan with the propane torch.
It was not nearly as effective as heating the head. Heating the head
also warms the IP and fuel filter and some fuel. One time at home, I
tried heating both with 2 torches at the same time. It was no more
effective than one torch on the head.

Ah this brings back memories of my first farm tractor, a well worn
MF 65D. Hard to start below freezing. The book said not to use
starting fluid. There was a device inside the intake manifold to drip
diesel fuel on a glowing wire. You could hear it do a frump-rumble
rumble number at which point you were to engage the starter and draw the
heated air into the cylinders. It didn't help much. I noticed the
intake manifold didn't even get hot. So I decided to try using a
propane torch on it. Like most tractors the engine and transmission
were also the frame so everything was out there in the open. True,
there was the fuel tank above but I planned to heat just the underside
of the manifold.

Probably it would have worked except for the fine layer of oily
crud built up on everything over the years. Although I had wiped off
the area, as soon as I began using the torch the side of the engine
became enveloped in a lovely lazy blue flame. Quick to the fire
extinguisher. Whew. White powder everywhere but the fire was out. I
think after that I used a magnetic electric heater that stayed clinging
to the oil pan the rest of the winter. Once I had a new sleeve kit put
in it started fine.

[MBZ] OT 85 people etc. and election systems

2014-01-29 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
I think it was Curt who favored a NOTA option on the ballot. I
read the state of Nevada offers a None of the Above choice in its
elections, as does the nation of India. It doesn't seem to have
improved things much in those places.

Negative voting, i.e. being able to subtract a vote from an
undesired candidate, certainly has appeal. It could backfire however if
enough people subtracted votes from the better two candidates to allow
the win of an oddball third candidate that few wanted. Voting
strategies would change. Almost certainly there would be more negative
advertising.

My favorite fantasy reform involves the U. S. Senate. Why two
senators from each state, large and small? What is the present logic in
having California and Texas be on a par with West Virginia and South
Dakota? And why is the Senate needed anyway in today's system? They
just add another stop in the legislative process. OK, so they do some
advice and consent and bless treaties. Nothing the House couldn't do,
what with their 400+ members standing around.

Or leave the Senate duties unchanged and imagine what a useful
balancing group it would be if its members were selected by lottery from
all registered voters in the country. (This is about the way the
classic Athenian democracy worked.)No parties, no special interests,
no complaints about some group being under represented. If your name
comes up you get six years as a Senator at about $175,000 a year plus a
few million $ for staff and expenses.

Think of your experience on jury duty. Wouldn't people rise to
such an occasion? No need to go to D.C. if you didn't want to; stay
home and do it by email. The only problem I can see is that current
senators and political parties would not want to go there. Maybe we will
have to wait for Grant's revolution in the streets...

[MBZ] OT - Sharing the road in WV

2014-02-23 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore
One of the thrills in living in a WV shale gas boom area is
meeting big equipment on narrow roads. It used to take about an hour to
get from Cameron to Wheeling WV on US250.Now everyone allows an

getting stuck trying to turn corners. Here was the latest excitement:

And there is another one like it coming in March. This one is
moving on a special all wheel steering platform controlled remotely by a
guy with a joy stick box.

The good news is there is full employment and local merchants are
happy. People with a flat piece of land have set up RV parks for those
Oklahoma boy's fifth wheelers. Landowners who still have mineral rights
are getting $7500 per acre. Farmers w/o minerals are selling drilling
sites and pipeline right of ways. Life is good.

Interesting story and video - thanks.
I looked around at google maps to see if some of these development
sites can be seen. I think this is the McElroy substation:
39.871503,-80.638208

You got that right.

and this is the Oak Grove site:
39.878424,-80.590768
Not exactly. That one is called the Beeler Station site - the Oak Grove
site is further down Fork Ridge and I guess too new to show up on the
Google map.Supposed to be 170 acres and $3 billion.

- seems like lotsa Okie terrain messin' happenin'
in your neighborhood. Let's hope WV residents get more of that cash
than the okies take to OK. These appear to be processing depots -
where are the wells and pipelines?
The wells are hard to see on the map - 3 to 5 acre white spots with
grassy lanes running to them. Further east on US250 (Waynesburg Pike)
between Irish Ridge Road and Wolf Run Road you can see one just to the
north. Eventually there is to be a grid of them spaced about 2 miles apart.

I like the appearance of that area
- very attractive, rural, it seems. Prolly too expensive to move
into.
Prices have gone up. Thirty years ago we bought over grown farm land
(w/o mineral rights) for $200 an acre. Now it is 8 to10 times that,
most of the increase in the last few years. Still cheap by California
standards.

It depends on the wood.

I like my engine-powered splitter. Especially as I take

This is pretty much my situation. Mostly firewood here starts
out as junky stuff that has been leaning out over meadows. Locust,
sassafras, red elm, cherry, maple, ash. When oak, hickory and walnut in
the deep woods fall across roads i try to keep open they get added to
the stack. Lots of tulip poplar too but it isn't worth the effort.

I have a ram splitter that plugs in to the hydraulic system of a
farm tractor. With a 4" cylinder with 24" stroke it cuts through
stringy wood and knots that otherwise would keep a round from
splitting. Setting the engine at about 1300 rpm moves the wedge at a
speed that is workable but safe. .My woodshed is long, open on the
south, and holds 8 -10 cords. Typically that is more than a two year
supply for my house. I burn the oldest wood first and fill in behind
with newly split.

In a normal winter (20F to 60F is my firewood harvesting
temperature) I saw and split 10 -12 cords. After filling the woodshed
the rest goes in a pile that I sell to some families I have been
supplying for years. I find it all a very satisfying activity. And I
have to get the stuff out of the way any how. I seldom cut a live tree.

By way of wisdom to pass on, I feel obliged to warn against the
use of the auger type splitters. These can still be found secondhand.
These look like a big wood screw that goes into the side of the round.
They run off a tractor pto or a small stationary engine. Bark buster
was a popular brand.I used one for several years. They are simple,
cheap and fast but dangerous. If the auger goes into a knot and twists
the round off the support bar the round will spin so fast you can't get
your hand out of the way. I disjointed a finger. Others have been hurt
worse.

A man is eating dinner in a fancy restaurant and at the next table
is a gorgeous blond. He has been checking her out for some time but
hasn't worked up the nerve to speak to her. Suddenly she sneezes and
her glass eye flies out of her head toward where he is sitting. With
his quick reflexes he catches it in mid air.

"Oh God, I am so sorry", she says, putting the eye back in its
socket, "Please come have dinner with me and let me make it up to you."

They have a lovely dinner together and then go to her place for
drinks. After a while she takes him into the bedroom and begins
undressing him. They have wild passionate sex many times during the
night. The next morning when he wakes she has already gotten up and
brings him breakfast in bed.

The guy is amazed. "You are the perfect woman!", he says, "Are
you this nice to every guy you meet?"

"No",she says, "You just happened to catch my eye!"

Not a big deal, but I wonder why the radio in my 83 300SD always
comes on full volume when I reconnect the battery and turn the ignition
switch to start the car. Even though the radio had been off when the
battery was disconnected. It is the original radio/tape player. I have
to be quick with the off button to avoid a huge blast of static. Once
turned off it will turn on and function in the normal way. And if the
battery hasn't been disconnected it always works normally.

When I got the car I disconnected the previous owner's car phone -
a big old Audiovox model. Could that be relevant? Thanks.

[MBZ] OT - First Cars

2015-02-01 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore via Mercedes
My first car was a 1953 Studebaker coupe I bought in 1958 from a
used car lot in Chicago. It had been repainted (yellow) and I suspect
the odometer rolled back but it was lovely. I don't think there has
been a more graceful car made. Whitewall tires. Three on the tree with
overdrive. Flathead straight 6. Not very powerful but smooth and it
handled much better than my folk's Pontiac station wagon.

In that car I experienced an epiphany. I was driving across
Kansas on my way to start a new life in Denver. Suddenly everything was
suffused with the classic glow and I felt a sense of well being unknown
before. The feeling lasted perhaps five minutes. I had ingested only
coffee and scrambled eggs at a truck stop diner not long before. Just
youth, I guess.

The Studebaker got me to Denver but it sure didn't run well. I
read the mile high elevation had an effect on internal combustion
engines. I found a dial on the carburetor that allowed it to be set
leaner and that solved the problem. The next big event was one day on
my way to work the rear end locked up at about 60 mph. A seal had gone
and leaked the lube out. Not long after that was fixed the foot brake
went to the floor and I sailed through a stoplight. (This was before the
day of two chambered brake reservoirs.) A month or so later the
transmission began making bad sounds and shifting hard. By then I was
earning decent money so I traded it in on a new VW Beetle. Fortunately
the dealer didn't test drive the Studebaker.

In my experience the most important thing is to practice on scrap
until the bead you are making is good. The scrap metal setup should
duplicate the type, thickness, and most importantly the angles involved
in your project. Welding vertically requires a different machine
setting and technique than welding flat or upside down. For example, I
usually weld vertically by going down with the stick pointing up and
making small, multiple beads on each side of the object to prevent
warping. A hand held grinder will be your friend. The auto darkening
hoods are a great invention. But practicing on scrap first is the key.

There is another pipline proposed to run from ND to IL. It goes

use of eminent domain to enrich a private company.

While there is a national interest, is it proper use of eminent domain

From what I have seen a pipeline coming through enriches
everybody. Local contractors get work, landowners get easy money and
the land is not harmed. (The topsoil is moved aside and replaced when
they are done.) Once construction starts it all happens fast - the
machinery is so expensive they don't let it sit idle if they can help it.

I agreed with Chesapeake to put 10,000' of a a 16" shale gas
gathering line through my place two years ago. It took the contractor
just a couple weeks in steep, mostly cut over timberland which required
removing stumps. The part that went through my ridge top hay fields
left them smoother then they were, fertilized and seeded to my
specifications. I gave up timber growing in a 50' ROW about 6,000'
long. In return I got a firebreak where I needed it and hay fields
enlarged. And $240,000. I understand bigger lines, like the interstate

What you describe, however, is not the use of eminent domain. Your
saying, "I agreed ... ," indicates it was a voluntary transaction with a
private company that compensated you for your losses and troubles.

Yes, my situation did not involve eminent domain. I should have
made that clear. As I understand it, a gathering pipeline is a local
intrastate sort of thing, in contrast to the interstate transmission
pipelines that typically involve eminent domain.

What I was responding to in Curly's original message was the idea
of tearing up productive land with the private company the only one
getting enriched. The land is restored. Putting a pipeline through
just means the farmer misses a crop and is well compensated for that.
As I see it the issue is that the resulting Right of Way limits use of
the land for something else, like putting buildings on it. That is
what you really are being compensated for. In most cases you can just
put up the building nearby.

Couldn't perhaps use the tractor 3PH and a chain to lift on the

You probably mean the tool I grew up calling a come-a-long, which
I gather is known now as a "cable hoist puller"- a device with a ratchet
lever that draws in a hook on a cable.

I have 4 of these. One, with two 10' chains, is behind the seat
of my pickup. The others are hanging in the barn/out buildings where
last used to lift on and off the sides to my flat bed truck, the wood
splitter to the tractor loader bucket, etc. They are half the price of a
high lift jack and more versatile. The problem with the jack is that it
has only 4' of travel and a good bit of that is used in taking up slack
when you use chains. Come-a-longs have more like 8'/10' travel. i use
cheap ones rated at 2 tons. Since there is almost always a handy tree
to pull or lift from here in WV the come-a-longs work best for me. (I
did knock together an A frame for using a come-a-long to pull a stuck
pump out of a well that didn't happen to have a tree in the right
place.) I have used multiple come-a-longs at once in rescuing over the
hill machines.

Since Kleb is out there in the wide open spaces and so much
involved with vehicles I can see why the high lift jack would be his
first choice. But I bet he will need a come-a-long or two eventually,
if he doesn't already have them. To my way of thinking the big
advantage to either the jack or come-a-long is that things happen
gradually. You can hear/feel it if something is getting stressed to
much. With power equipment things often break before you can stop.

I can relate to those old farming ways. My grandfather's Ozark
farm had one of the corn shellers you describe mounted next to the corn
crib along with a hand operated burr disk apparatus.

One of the places I bought here in WV came with a barn collapsed
on a seed grain cleaner the size of a VW beetle. It blew air via a
hand cranked paddle wheel across a system of moving screens. There were
tongue and groove tight bins for the grain. This was on the second
floor, above a scale that weighed wagons. Further down the road was a
threshing machine in its own collapsed shed with an iron wheeled Fordson
tractor rusting next to it. When the neighbor who wanted the tractor
pulled it out only the top two thirds of the wheels were left and he had
to skid it onto his trailer. I saved the threshing machine for years
for a fellow from the Waynesburg PA historical society only to find he
had died and no one else was interested. It is pretty much melted away now.

On another subject, I have an interest you might want to write
on. I have heard bomber pilots are a superstitious group. Not wanting
their pictures taken and that sort of thing. Did you B52 guys in
Vietnam have superstitions?

Running 2 strokes dry is a problem? I regularly do this with
chainsaws - run them until they go dry, fill with fuel, run until dry
again, etc. Done it a thousand times with no apparent harm.

[MBZ] OT - Kubota tractors tier 4 was 1984 500SEL Surrender

I'm fixing to buy a diesel tractor for the ranch. Probably new. Probably Kubota.
Beware the EPA's tier 4 pollution standard. Although I understand
it is not required in final form in off road diesels under 75 hp for a
few more years, Kubota has been introducing tier 4 in their new tractor
engines. I hear the changes include common rail computer controlled
electronic injectors, a urea tank, a catalytic converter, and a
particulate filter. And a price increase of several thousand dollars.
I would go for an older model.

I suggest something in the 40-50 hp range, 4WD, front end loader,
3ph with a quick detach backhoe. If you plan on haying I urge a cab
tractor.

Around here Kubotas have a reputation for top quality but the
parts are expensive.

I bought one of their RTV900's, now with 1500 hours and going
strong. I use it every day. The dog is in love with it. If you are
walking anywhere in the direction of where it is parked she will run and
jump up on the seat and wait for you.

In the interest of full disclosure, my oldest son's 300E 2.6 still has
R12 in it, and I have a can on the shelf. It could probably stand to be
topped off, but I don't have a manifold gauge set that will do R12.

It is my understanding that one doesn't need a gauge set in this
situation. Aren't there bubbles showing in the sight glass if the
system is low? Adding refrigerant (with the compressor running) until
the bubbles go away restores cooling. Or at least that is the way I
always did it. I think. It's been a long time.

I'd go through and tighten all the connections first.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Shotguns

2014-10-26 Thread David & Kristin Gilmore via Mercedes
I second the advice from brother Grant - the best shotgun is one
that fits. It will feel good, point naturally, and won't beat you up
with recoil.

The recoil thing is very important. It is easy to develop a
flinch from recoil that will ruin enjoyment and performance. Once
started flinching it is hard to stop. IMHO the gas-operated
semiautomactics, like the Remington 1100, are the best choice for the
novice clay target shooter. They are not a big investment and this sort
of gun will allow a person to shoot a lot, which is the way to build
competence. Then maybe move to a special purpose heavy and expensive
over and under if clay shooting turns out to be one's sport of choice.
