Re: [MBZ] 1995 E420

Sounds like you got an awesome deal on that E420! A used car of any era with
EVERYTHING working is a rarity, let alone one that is 25 years old! I finally
got some news on my 1982 240D that’s been in the shop since February. They are
wrapping things up, and it COULD be ready by the end of the week! It will be
nice to have Hilde back! My niece moved up here from California, and she’s
excited to drive it!

Re: [MBZ] This is what you have to look forward to in 15-20 years when all the 124s and 210s are gone

2020-04-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I had the hood up on the Sprinter today. It also has plastic covers of various
sizes and shapes, under which I’m sure lies a 3.0l V6 Diesel engine. Everyone
who has driven her says that she is very easy to drive and does very well on
the road. My niece said that the cabin is designed much more ergonomically
correct with simpler controls than the 2017 Honda Oddity van that was destined
for the used car market before COVID-19 hit. The Sprinter is MUCH more van for
the $10K price difference, way more room with similar fuel economy! It’s
averaging 18MPG just like the Honda, and it should get better as it breaks in.
It has no problem getting as high as 22.6MPG on mostly highway drives, probably
capable of mid 20’s on a long hwy trip.

We have a Bonsaii EverShred C149-C 18 sheet crosscut shredder that has been
working very well since August of 2016. It has a fan and a 30 or 40 minute
continuous shred rating. The only problem it has is that it will stay on even
if there is nothing in the slot to be taken in to shred. To stop the machine, I
have to turn it off manually. The sensor that detects the presence of
shreddable matter must be bad or dirty. I’ve gotten it quite hot with loads of
junk mail, but it keeps on shreddin’!

Re: [MBZ] Half off at Wiha

2020-04-16 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
My first set of handle driver Allen wrenches was Wiha, or as the hobby shop
owner called them, W HAA! They had very comfortable handles with a
top knob that went into your palm that would turn as the tool was twisted in
your fingers. I hope you get my explanation. At the time (early 90s), they were
$50 for the set of metric Allen drivers from 1.5mm to 5mm, a total of 8
drivers. They didn’t have replaceable tips, so when they stripped out, they
were done. I’m not sure of their warranty. Now that I’m going to start my RC
car trade-in business, I may invest in some more We Ha Allen drivers.

Re: [MBZ] Volvo PV544 on BAT

2020-03-30 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I sure did enjoy the 1958 Volvo PV444 that we had in the 1990’s. It was a
mostly original driver quality car, but still a head turner. Someone re-powered
it with a B18 engine which was more powerful than the original B16. During the
move from California to Oregon, the moving company damaged it, so we decided to
prepare it for a full restoration which was never to be. We ended up giving it
away a few years later. Hopefully, it’s still around or donated parts to
another driver.

Re: [MBZ] Shelving

2020-03-29 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have a couple of different kinds of shelving for my RC cars and supplies. I
started out with the 24”x36”x72 plastic kind with four poles that fit into the
shelf below and support the shelves above. The type that I prefer are the metal
ones that can be put on feet or on wheels. The shelves fit onto metal posts on
each corner with plastic sleeves that allow for 1” height adjustments. I used
the wheels to roll them around if needed. They are 60”x24”x77”H (72”h with feet
installed. This one works well with my 1/5 scale trucks that are 20” to 26”
wide. The weight capacity for the rolling configuration is 1/4 that for
stationary installation, but well within what I need. 40lb average for each
truck plus a few random things on the top shelf at around 200lbs is well under
the 800lbs total weight capacity on wheels or the 4000lbs weight capacity when
stationary. One person can assemble them, but the top two can be a bit
difficult.

On this St. Paddy’s day, our house is gonna be wearin’ some new green paint to
prepare it for sale. It looks like we’re going to be moving to a new house on
4.82 acres in Clatskanie, OR. I’ll have a shop in which to tinker on the 240D
as well as repairing and rebuilding RC cars for my RC trade-in business.
There’s plenty of area out back to run them! The Doodle puppies will have
plenty of space to run and play, and all of this will cost over $100K less than
the selling price of our current city residence!!

I’ve been staying away from ACC servo equipped cars for that reason. That price
may be high, but There just haven’t been any worthwhile W116 300SD’s out there,

ease of maintaining my 240D, and that $5500 will do wonders for it!

[MBZ] A Heart Transplant for Hildegard

2020-02-13 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’ve decided to take the leap and have a 111K mile engine installed into
Hildegard. My indy shop found it in Cali, and it should be arriving by the
middle of next week. The old engine was leaking from the front and rear seals,
and blowing it out the oil separator. Rather than throwing easily half the
money at this old engine with new gaskets and seals, and half way to a complete
R job, this engine will be refreshed with all new gaskets and seals before it
goes in. They are going to rebuild the front suspension components that are bad
and fix the AC system. It’s going to cost about $6K, but it should run
literally forever or until Coronavirus kills everyone off. I know that Pierre
Hedary would be proud and happy that another W123 240D will be saved!

Re: [MBZ] Hildegard’s DIRTY little secrets (1982 240D

2020-02-07 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Thanks, Curley, for suggesting the Irwin bolt/screw extractor set! I found a
set on Amazon that has 5 different sizes with 3/8” drive. They have reverse
spiral flutes that allow it to bite down on the bolt as it is turned CCW. Is
this the set you suggested? The 2nd largest extractor fits around the bolt and
does turn it in my hand as I tested it on one of the ones that I was able to
remove. I’m actually thinking about making Hildegard into a 240D 3.0 since this
engine is so tired. Of course, I would have to use a 300D radiator and fan
shroud as the 240 setup wouldn’t be adequate.

[MBZ] Hildegard’s DIRTY little secrets (1982 240D

2020-02-06 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello listers. I’ve spent about 5 hours working on this tired 240D. It has oil
leaking from the rear main seal, and the valve cover and oil separator have
been blowing oil all over the engine! I did replace the VC gasket when I did
the valve adjustment. The major situation is that the passenger’s side engine
mount outer bolt can’t be taken out. I thought I had the wrong angle, but I was
able to hit it straight on with the u-joint extension and still no go. I
decided to get a closer “LOOK” at the bolt and discovered that there’s a tip of
an Allen wrench stuck inside the bolt, and it’s too tall to get another bit in
there to spin it out. All of the remaining three bolts came out, but they are
practically stripped. Is there any way to easily extract the bolt with the
broken hex inside?
On another note, I was feeling around the crossmember for a bolt that I had
dropped when I found a piece of rubber hanging off the Driver’s LCA. The
bushing is SHOT!! Can this be replaced without removing it from the car? I’m
not sure if I want to sort out all of the problems with this car.

Re: [MBZ] Nice Kleb Car

2020-02-06 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I don’t smoke, and I wouldn’t want to lick the engine in my 240D since it’s
oily!!! OTOH, if you have a taste for oil, I need my engine cleaned!
I’m going to finish the engine mounts today since I now have a u-joint
extension for easier accessibility of the top bolts.

[MBZ] 1982 240D motor/engine mount replacement

2020-02-03 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello everyone.
I decided to tackle the engine mounts on Hildegard. It took a bit of persuasion
to get the passenger’s side lower bolt loose, but after a little “rattle
wrench” action and some more ratcheting, it broke loose! Then, I was able to
jack up the engine and remove the heat shields with no problem. The cursing
began with the upper bolts. I got both driver’s side bolts out with the mount,
but the engine side bolt was quite fiddly. I was able to get it out little by
little with a wobble extension. I couldn’t find the 3/8“ drive u-joint
extension that my dad used, but I have one on the way in order to make the
passenger’s side MUCH easier.
When I get ready to button it up tomorrow, is there a proper way for the heat
shields to go in? There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they were
positioned other than not having the taller side toward the engine. The rear
mount behind the oil pan that mounts to the cross member was oil soaked, so I
have to order another one.

2020-01-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Attaboy! That is so nice to hear when a good, old Mercedes can be saved. I’ve
got Hildegard up on ramps and ready to do the engine mounts. I’m planning to do
the fan shroud replacement afterward since I won’t have to worry about fan
blade clearance when I jack up the engine without the shroud in place.

front and rear sensors, MB/Tex seats and all but the rear 4 passenger bench
recline, USB-C ports for everyone’s devices, high performance rooftop AC
system, 3.0L V6 Diesel, 5000LB trailer towing package, anything one could want
in a people/dog/paddle board hauler. I’ll have some pictures taken to share

PS. It’s been so long since I’ve done W123 engine mounts, could someone please
refresh me on the bolt sizes and proper sequence? should I start by loosening
the lower bolts before loosening the top bolts? Can the top bolts be taken out
before jacking up the engine?

This Sprinter has every possible safety assistance technology including blind
spot monitoring with audible and visual alert, 360 degree camera, front and
rear parking sensors and rear cross traffic alert. It also has attention
assist that will alert the driver if he or she becomes drowsy. If it could
drive itself, we would be set! It is 29” longer than the Odyssey with a nearly

Hi, Craig. Are you saying that this guy, based on his experience with his
Sprinter, felt that it wasn’t very reliable, and couldn’t trust them for his
fleet? I’ve red about Transit van problems as well like being rust prone, poor
fit and finish, driveshaft carrier bearing issues, and oil dilution with the
EcoBoost V6 engines. They do outsell Sprinters 4 to 1.

Re: [MBZ] Sprinter Reliability

2019-12-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
At minimum, that’s correct. The Ody did the job with 4 adults, two kids in car
seats and two 80LB service dogs, but my big Goldendoodle pup will be much
larger at over 100LBs which wouldn’t leave much room for me in the back. The
Sprinter can be configured with as many seats as necessary or have seats
removed to accommodate 2 crates for the pet puppies. Last summer when we took
the Ody to the lake with the stand-up paddle boards, gear and provisions for
the day, there was no room for me. Luckily, a friend was also able to go, so I
had a seat in her car. A Sprinter could swallow the gear with no problem, and
with the fuel economy of the Diesel engine, it would cost nearly the same to
operate.

[MBZ] Sprinter Reliability

2019-12-03 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello Dieselers. As I mentioned a couple days ago, I’m considering a Sprinter
van to replace the 2017 Honda Odyssey as the family/K9 hauler. Our three Doodle
puppies are growing larger, and we are also having two more Goldendoodles
raised to be our next guide dogs. In just over a year, we will have 5 grown
dogs plus my wife’s Victory Doodle if he’s still around, and Ody is not going
to be quite big enough. I’m considering two Sprinter possibilities, a brand new
2019 V6 Diesel/7gTronic transmission (mid to upper $50K, or a 2016 4 cylinder
Diesel/7gTronic tranny ($36K. Both are 144”WB 12 passenger models. I would
believe that the in-line engine would be more reliable although a little less
powerful (161hp/266LbFt compared to the v6 with 188HP/320LB/Ft. It won’t be
towing much, maybe a trailer with SUP boards on it, sub 1000LB which the 4
banger could handle. Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Cars & trucks

2019-12-01 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Our 2006 Sprinter had a towing capacity of 5000LBS. The boat in tow was our
personal boat, a Tracker Party Deck 21 I/O which was near the 5000LB towing
capacity. The dragon boats were between 600 and 900LBs each, and with 4 on the
club trailer, the Ram 2500 Cummins was definitely up to the task until they
bought a Ram 2500 V10 of their own. It was cheaper than a Cummins, but I would
bet that their fuel costs has far surpassed the savings by now. We are
considering a newer Sprinter for our family/dog hauling van. Now, it will have
stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) on the roof or on a trailer which would be well
under 1000LBS.

biting on the notches on the puck. Without the dragging rear brake, you should
be able to hit 60mpg!

Re: [MBZ] I Am Living Right

2019-10-21 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I also live in an HOA. In the beginning, I wasn’t too happy that the then HOA
president was against the design of our patio/deck cover and structure. It goes
the entire length of the back of the house and out 15 feet, and is covered with
corrugated smoked panels so that light can get through. She thought that it
should be covered with wood and roofed in material matching to that on the
house and kind of threatened with the possibility that another home owner could
file a complaint with the HOA and force us to rebuild it. That was 5 years ago,
and things have been quite uneventful since. She always leaves her motor home
and/or her boat out on the street well over the 72 hour limit, and no one seems
too annoyed. The dogs are enjoying their covered area since they have plenty of
area to play out of the winter rains and summer sun. It isn’t much of an HOA
with 15 homes and $120 dues per year.

Re: [MBZ] Nice E430 for Kleb

2019-10-17 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The automatic pool cleaners are great! We have a Hayward Tigershark robotic
pool cleaner. When it is done, all I have to do is rinse out the filters,
reinstall them and it’s ready for another round. This pool has an electro
hydraulic system to roll the cover in and back out when swimming is done which
cuts way down on leaves and debris entering the water. Most of the year, It
requires a cover pump to drain the rainwater. We were VERY lucky to find a
house with a pool here in western Oregon, even rarer, it’s and in-ground pool.

Thanks, Max. I am willing to put some money into this 240D since it has such
nice paint and runs so well. It would be nice to have working AC in it. With
AC, a new modulator!or adjustment, engine mounts which I have, a new
winsshield, a reconditioned driver’s seat, and restoring the rear seat pleat
strips, it will be great!! For the couple thousand dollars in addition to the
$1500 purchase price, I’ll have a very presentable car that will only
appreciate, not depreciate like my Beetle TDI was doing!

My Uncle Al’s W115 1976 300D was the car that gave me the Dieselitis bug that
will be with me until my dying day. They are getting very hard to find in any

Craigslist. I’ll post a link to the ad if I can find it.

Yes, Mitch. It shifts just how you describe with a non-working modulator or no
vac signal. When it’s floored, shifts are near redline and smooth, but very
firm if not floored. The PB booster works very well as does the shutoff. All
lines to the lock circuit have been capped. I’ll have to do plenty of
troubleshooting the vac lines for the locks if I can find my mighty vac.

[MBZ] 1982 240D shakedown cruise

2019-09-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Today, my nephew and I set off in Hildegard to fill her up with Diesel and take
a drive to pick up some wings for dinner. The fuel sender actually works!
However, the odometer does not, so who knows how many hundreds of thousands of
miles are on her? I’m a little unsure if the moderate blow by will improve
since the engine could just be worn out. The 710 cap does dance a bit, but
doesn’t get blown completely off the engine, and power seems to be respectable.
On the 15 mile drive, we got her on the highway for the first time, and it felt
great! There’s a miss at idle once warmed up.
Shifting doesn’t seem any different although I hooked up the vac line directly
from the bleedoff valve to the modulator. Is the vac port on the modulator
supposed to swivel? It does make it easier to attach the line. It still shifts
extremely late, but not extremely firm unless it’s not at full pedal. It sure
is fun to cruise around in this car despite its shifting issues, and alignment
is good with no pulling at all, even with the mismatched tires. The brakes work
wonderfully! I’m going to have a compression test done to get some solid
numbers on the engine’s health, and get the vacuum lines routed as they should
be to troubleshoot the shifting situation.

2019-09-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hi, Craig and Jaime. The horsehair strips did, in fact, slide out of their
pleats toward the rear of the seat. I found a strip under the seat when I
pulled it out. How do you slide them back into place? Is there a proper way to
remove the hog rings so that I can separate the cover completely from the
springs? If I tug too hard and try to pull it through from underneath the front
of the seat cover, it starts to rip. I don’t want a seat pleat with a ripped
strip in my cheap heap.

[MBZ] MbTex Question 1982 240D

2019-09-27 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
As I read Donald’s post about the pleats on the seat bottom and back not
matching, I figured I would ask about the back seat pleats in my 240D. There
are quite a few that have flattened out. Otherwise the seat pad seems to be in
good shape. Is there a way to refresh the padding within the pleats? Is it part
of the upholstery or the seat pad itself? I was thinking of cutting strips of
foam and having them glued into the pleats.

Re: [MBZ] Secret message for Kevin Diesel vacuum diagrams and Modulator Question

2019-09-21 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Thanks, Curley, for the info. As I was reading through it and other
transmission related stuff online, I got to thinking. This 1982 240D seems to
be behaving as if the transmission isn’t getting any vacuum supply. I haven’t
gotten underneath to confirm, but I believe that the mystery disconnected vac
line could be the one that hooks up to the vac modulator. Which side of the
transmission should I be looking (or feeling) for the modulator to determine
whether or not the line is connected?

[MBZ] 1982 240D Shifting

2019-09-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We took Hildegard out for a test drive today, and she seems to be running
better since the valve adjustment. The shift points seem to occur at specific
speed and engine RPM rather than throttle positions. All vac lines leading
inside the car are disconnected and capped, but all of the lines atop the valve
cover seem to be connected, but most likely not in their proper positions. I
know that there’s a VCV on top of the IP that controls the transmission, but
I’m not sure if it’s even working. I may have to take it into a shop since I
can’t see a pressure gage for vacuum at the different ports. What should I
check first?

Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D Valve Adjustment (Ventileinstellung)

2019-09-17 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I got the valve adjustment done and the cover back on. The engine sounds much
quieter! Most exhaust valves were WAAY loose, nearly 1.5x the amount of
clearance! Intake valves were pretty good, and none were excessively tight. The
air filter housing had the wrong mounts, one of which had broken so it was
tilted to the side and totally away from the intake manifold. It sits properly
now with the new mounts, but they didn’t come with nuts, and the old mounts
were rigged, only one having the proper nut. Does anyone know the thread size
of the air filter mounting studs?
I think I’ve got most of the necessary linkage in place. There is no linkage
going to the device near the PS pump. Also, there is another linkage on the
intake manifold that used to operate a flap that is no longer in place, and
that is also missing linkage (assuming that all of this ties into the throttle
linkage as well). The whole thing is like figuring out a puzzle since I don’t
have the luxury of consulting a manual, lots of trial and error. I still have a
piece that mounts to the valve cover somehow. It has two holes at one end, and
a hole/bushing at the other end that is pointed upward at a right angle.

[MBZ] 1982 240D Valve Adjustment (Ventileinstellung)

2019-09-14 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Today, I started the process of adjusting the valves on my 1982 240D. When I
did the last one, 1981 300CD over 10 years ago, my Dad did most of the r of
the valve cover and linkages/vacuum lines. This one is all on me, and I hope I
can get it back together tomorrow or Monday. I know that the vacuum lines
aren’t right since there is some sort of screw inserted into one of the
“fingers” on top of the valve cover. Also, there’s a line leading down from in
front of the valve cover to somewhere forward of the engine that is
disconnected. The linkage setup atop the valve cover is quite the puzzle as
well. What does the other linkage control (I’m sure there is stuff missing from
it as well).
Kevin in Hillsboro, OR

I hope your cancer treatment goes well. It’s good that the cancer was detected

About the disappearing W123 cars, It’s all the more reason for me to keep this
1982 W123 240D on the road!!! I’ve ridden in it two times with two different
drivers since the original test drive, and it’s a wonderful machine! I get what
people have said about older classic cars having a soul. After riding in the
2017 Honda Odyssey appliance and even the recently sold 2015 Beetle TDI
Convertible (yes I really sold it), the W123 has a feeling and a presence that
can’t be beat! I’m sure that the $110 monthly insurance savings “downgrading”
from the Beetle TDI will contribute greatly to fixing it up and keeping it
going!

Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D Cooling System Troubleshooting

2019-09-11 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Thanks, Jaime and all for the suggestions. We took Hildegard on a 10 mile road
test, and she did well. Once she warmed up, temp stayed at 80-85 with a quick
blip up to 100 at the first light before dropping right back down to normal
where it stayed for the rest of the trip. I definitely have to get the vac
lines sorted so it shifts properly. There are a few oil soaked fittings that
need replacing. My valve cover gasket should be here today, so I’ll be
adjusting the valves next. The VC gasket that is on it right now is rock hard,
probably hasn’t had an adjustment in a while. Once it cools down, I’m going to
check the coolant level.

2019-09-10 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello again.
I decided to “blindly” plunge into the cooling system, removed the radiator cap
and filled it. Afterward, I remembered the procedure of filling through the top
hose, so I removed it, topped off the system, reinstalled it, tightened the
clamp and fired it up. Nothing was leaking, so I let it idle for a couple
minutes. I varied the RPMs as it got hotter. I turned on the heater to get more
circulation through the system. When I shut it down, I noticed a small puddle
of coolant under the passenger’s side of the radiator which I determined had
puked out of the overflow tube. I also noticed that only the top hose and top
part of the rad were warm. Could the t-stat be stuck closed? Could it be that
the radiator cap is faulty as well? I also noticed what appears to be a vac
line running down from the top front of the engine to behind the passenger
side headlight.

[MBZ] Houston, we have some problems...

With this 1982 240D. I was feeling around under the hood and discovered that
there is no AC compressor which isn’t the worst of it. THERE IS NO COOLANT
WHATSOEVER IN THE RADIATOR! I know that most of these are neglected, but
who knows how long it’s been running dry. I really don’t want to throw money at
it. Should I just put water in it and hopefully determine where it is leaking?
I would hate to see the end of this car since it has such a nice body. I could
most likely find another one for the money it would cost for a good engine.

Re: [MBZ] Back In The Saddle...

2019-08-30 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have the wrenches and feeler gauges, and a bunch of nitrile gloves. I never
got rid of them since I knew that I would eventually own another Mercedes
Diesel. All of my spare fuel filters and MB Diesel items that I bought for the
last 1977 pea green 240D are in a plastic toolbox on the bottom shelf of my
garage cabinet. I’ll probably have time to dive into some repairs next week.

I have done one valve adjustment sequence before on a 1981 300CD back in 2006.
Before I adjusted them, they were so far out of adjustment that the car
wouldn’t even start! Afterward, I was able to get it started. I know that this
240D is ready for one!!

I love doing door checks too, so you’re outta luck! :) Anyone up for a valve
adjustment? injector replacement and return lines? Oil changes? Engine mount
replacement? AC fix/recharge? New tires? Also, what is the best approach for
crank (Armstrong) windows, maintenance/oiling to make them move more readily?

[MBZ] Back In The Saddle...

2019-08-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
...Of this 1982 240D. It has the usual issues like non-working A/C, vacuum door
lock issues, bad door check straps, cracking MB-Tex on the driver’s seat, but
it runs OK! I’m sure it’ll run much better once I adjust the valves and check
the adjustment of the throttle linkages which are probably not adjusted
properly. It should keep me busy for a while. It does have some minor blow by,
but hopefully, synthetic oil and some Italian tune-ups will help it. For a
$1500 running, driving and stopping car with nice paint, I can’t complain too
much! I do wish it had the matching hub caps rather than the Bunts. Also, it
has mismatched tires which are ok until I can get a new set of tires.

Lithium polymer. The LiPo suction occurs when $140 is sucked right out of your
wallet for each of the two 6700MAh batteries needed to run my Traxxas X-Max
1/6th scale monster truck. I found some off-brand 6700MAh packs for half the
price of the name brand Traxxas battery packs, so I bought two sets. They even
came with an adapter that fits my plugs.
